Solve : OE not playing nice with Norton?

Answer»

Hey - I have two laptops that are theoretically configured the same, both running XP SP2, through the same router, etc. etc.

On one, Outlook Express hangs trying to hit a POP3. It GETS through IMAP servers OK, but times out on the POP3 only.

The error message (0x800CCC19, I think) indicated that it might be an AntiViral problem... But that didn't help.

So I disable NORTON FIREWALL, and the POP3 was OK.

I have two mailboxes on OE, and the IMAP sails through; then it hangs on the POP3. But with Firewall OFF, it's OK.

Do I need to get into the Firewall and figure out what ports are what, blah blah blah? The other laptop is fine, and it has an IMAP and a POP3 on OE, as well.have you checked the firewall settings on the laptop without the trouble against the laptop with the problems firewall setting.

Cheers fayward67Norton Anti Spam OFTEN interferes with POP3 accounts. Older versions of NAV used to cause timeouts.Quote

Well, I let them both auto-setup originally, and both accounts were already there... Also, I have looked and they appear the same.Never allow a firewall or any other program for that matter to "set itself up" as it were.

Having said that, there is a known problem in OE6 with MIME types and NAV. It causes a mailserver timeout which will GENERATE the error that you describe.
Is IE6 SP1 installed on the machine that fails?
