Solve : Cannot connect to internet but all appears ok?

Answer» HI,

Yesterday afternoon i stopped being able to connect to the internet via an ethernet cable to a router and an adsl line.

I didnt do anything at the time and suspect a setting has changed or been corrupted but i just cant find it.

Can anybody spare the time to talk me through this one please?

As i SAY, everything appears to be working just fine but it will not connect. I run two LAPTOPS wirelessly from home as well and they WORK fine. I feel it must be something to do with the settings on the hardwired such as security/firewall.

Help much appreciated as expecting important EMAIL this afternoon.

Cheers,

Helen.have you tried other ports on your router???

Solve : 54 is 54?

Answer»

I connect to my internet through a router that does 54MBPS.

My internet connection is 1.468Mbps.
I was told I could upgrade to 7.0Mbps.

If I did that, would my internet speed, through my router, increase? Or does it not WORK that way?

THANK you
the router has a maximum speed of 54mbps- which is to say, it can
pass-through" up to 54mbps of internet speed.

In SHORT, you will NOTICE a dramatic improvement, and it does work that way

Solve : re: Question on routers?

Answer»

I have a router and I have an ethernet cable connected to it and this is connected to my PC. This PC is in the other room.

Now I want to connect my broadband TV set box (which is in the same room as my PC) to the router, but I do not want to stretch another ethernet cable to this box.

Is there any way I can use the same cable that is already connected to my PC to share?

I think it is something to purchase a hub/switch but I'm not sure if I'm on the correct path here.

Thanks for listening. Are you sure you can connect a "broadband TV set box" to a router? I've never heard of connecting a TV to a router, so I was just wondering whether you KNOW, for a fact, that can be done. Is the "broadband TV set box" a device designed specifically for connection to a computer router, which I PRESUME is connected to a cable modem?

Do you not have TV cable wiring to any other room? What about using a cable splitter and running a standard COAXIAL cable to the TV?

Solve : DSL Connection fine, but computer won't connect?

Answer»

I've got a bit of a problem with my home computer. We've got an older Compaq desktop that we use for our main computer, which has a DSL connection from AT&T which suddenly stopped working. One day it was fine like normal, and the next it refused to make any connection, giving me a "limited or no connectivity" MESSAGE. I went through the *censored* that is AT&T tech support, who told me it was a problem on my computer, not with the connection (further verified by plugging my Vista laptop into the DSL MODEM and having no connection issues whatsoever)

The Compaq is about five years old, and uses Windows XP Home sp3. We got a new NETWORK card for it like the tech support people recommended (Network Everywhere NC100U-WM), but nothing has changed. Any ideas on what I should do?have you tried shutting down the firewall and connecting? I get this problem all the time on my laptop, its the firewall causing problems and I have yet to finger it out.Have near the same problem now problems, I have Att dsl as well & have alot of good luck with all their diagnostic & repair program ulitity's for connection problems or OTHERS! Hit the Windows startup index button, hit network or connect programs featuers & that should be all the Att help solutions you should ever need! Using there live support is alot foreign communcation conflicts to deal with, but sometimes you can find a very good support agent to help with solving your probelms. Thanks for the suggestions. I tried turning off the firewall, but nothing changed. I tried using the system restore to go back to an earlier point when it was still working, but it told me that nothing had changed. I'm still trying to find a solution, but I'm getting incredibly frustrated.download this on your laptop:

http://majorgeeks.com/download4372.html

put it on a flash drive(whatever works), and move to and run
on the compaq machine...see if it works for you...!!!

Good LuckCheck network sharing program, to see if you have another network conflicting with your main network computer, mine is at the bottom right toolbar which shows 2 combined PC Monitors , which means network PC connections. BEST I method I have found is to click diagnostic & repair for inside Windows network sharing conflicts which should show you where the connection problem is located. After appling diagnostic & repair to the problem link ,choose one of the 3 repair options, the one that seems to work best for myself is resetting the network adaptor, which has always fixed my connection & also helps to send repair work invoice link to Windows diagnostic support for helping find a solution on solving network connection in the near future! hope this helps?

Solve : IP Confilct?

Answer»

Everytime i connect to the internet windows gives me a warning that my computer has an ip conflict with another system on the network.

Can someone tell me what this is?This happens when two devices SOMEHOW wind up with the same IP address,

what you need to fix is:
1)enter IPCONFIG /RELEASE and IPCONFIG /RENEW from a command prompt and see what happens.
See if it fixes the problem. ok this gave me some addresses i suppose, the warning is still popping upRestart your this will force all systems to request new IP addresses.Josh,

you need to LOOK at two things:

*On your PC look at the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and check if the setting is Dynamic or Static. My guess is, it is set to Static, and therefor if another PC on the LAN has already a specific IP Address allocated (it may be Static or Dynamic) and you fire-up your PC in question (which has an Static IP Address and happend to be the same), then you will have conflicting Addresses. In any case change the TCP/IP of the PC in question to Dynamic.

*Check the Router for DHCP allocation. Check the IP Allocation Range, is the range big enough, it should be able to accommodate all PC's on the LAN.
Check if the DHCP is Dynamic or Static. It (really) should be Dynamic.
--------------------------------
My recommendation is:
SET YOUR LAN ENVIRONMENT TO DYNAMIC ALLOCATION.

1-set your PC to Dynamic allocation. Shut down this PC and (important) unplug ALL cables and and let it SIT for 20 minutes or so. Plug the cables back in. Restart.

2-Shut down the rest of PC's and unplug ALL cables. Set your Router to Dynamic DHCP allocation. Shut the Router down including the MODEM and unplug all cables. Let it sit for 20 minutes or so. This will CLEAR the ARP Stack and Allocated IP Addresses. (Do not reset to Factory Settings).

3-Plug in the Router and Modem. Start the Router and Modem. Lights will flash on the Modem and Router. Once they stop flashing, plug in your PC, and bring up the Router screen. It may take up to 20 minutes before the (Dynamic) DHCP allocation will show, and the Connection etc. on the Router log.

4-Fire up the remainder of the PC's and set ALL of them to Dynamic TCP/IP. Again the Allocation and Connection will take time to display.

5-Hope this helps you, I have done this many times.

Another good question to ask the user:
Are you behind a router? How do you connect to the Internet? Do you actually have more than one computer connected to the same connection?i think you assigned static ip to your Lan Card.
Keep your Lan Card on Automatic if you are behind a Router (Inter service provider router, who configured their router )..
How to do this..
simpley
Double Click your NIC (LAN CARD) blinking at Corner.
Click Properties.
Double click TCP/IP (ipv4)
Select the First Option for AUTOMATIC IP.
Click OK
wait a while so it gain the ip from ISP router
If it don't worked..
ASSIGN another STATIC IP away in counting from the present iP..
keep trying...till the warning don't POP-UP

Solve : Wireless Internet, again.?

Answer»

OK my wireless is working fine, so i restart my computer and when i log in, my wireless internet wont work. Here is what Ive tryed, and some information about my wireless card.

First i restarted again, nothing happend, i checked all the cables, checked that the card was firmly seated, then i used its software to reinstall the drivers, and nothing happend. when i open the program that is included in the software it TELLS me that I'm connected to the access point, but cannot connect to the internet.

After reading some of the forums i tryed to run Cmd, ipconfig /renew....nothing happend.

When i try the REPAIR function, it will go through but will never finish renewing my ip address.

I'm using a linksys wireless g pci adapter, its MODEL is wmp54g, I'm using the version 4.0 drivers.

The router, and acess point and MODEM are all on and working, (I'm using the desktop connected to the router and modem) and its reading that im connected to the acess point on my computer.

Any other ideas?

New info to a dead looking post.

ive gone to 192.168.1.1 and nothing was out of order, then i tyed sever programs, winsockexfix and a windows xp service pack 2 patch i found on the micrsoft web site, (i am running xp service pack 2) still, no improvment
We see you are using XP. Is this a laptop? How long did you have a working connection? Days? Weeks? What did you change, add or remove? Did you use Windows Wireless Wizard or the Utility from the maker of the Card? Or is it a card? A USB wireless thing? A PCI card? Which make? An external thing? How is the signal strength? How far away is it? Are you using WEP?
Some Wireless PC CARDS in laptops are near imposable in Windows XP, That is why the question about a laptop.

Solve : 2 network sharing internet connections , need to keep 1 deleted or disabled?

Answer»

At network start-up & dsl modem plug in & I can not connect to the internet ,because I have 2 or multible connection sharing & CAUSING my internet exployer to lock-up or fluxuate . The only way I can tempory fix the problem is by having the Windows diagnose & repair center to reset the network adapter LEAVING the correct main or network I need to use Exployer to connect. I WOULD rather bypass resetting the network adaptor procedures, by finding the way of eliminating the one network sharing internet connector causing my start-up internet connections PROBLEMS to my PC's Internet Exployer ?

Solve : Wi-Fi Still there but can't connect........?

Answer»

The wi-fi is there but can't go on
Okay, Everyday My internet doesn't work.......
So I, Turn off and on my router with modem on it and my internet works.......
Now I Don't wanna repeat this process....
I've Thinking that someone is stealing my wi-fi...
I have 2 laptops and 1 computer and wi-fi connector on my wiiIs there a password for your router?

Is it fine if you connect via Ethernet CABLE?If you turn off your modemrouter, how can you access the Internet?I have a similar problem with my laptop. It either doesnt connect to my network or wont get on the net until I shutdown the firewall (ZA free). Havent found a solution other than uninstalling the firewall. So your CONNECTION problem I cant help.

However, do you have WEP/WAP or mac filtering setup on your router? If you are leaving the router completely open, then you are shooting yourself in the foot. Don't know what the wii can handle (plan to own one soon), but check the manuals about the WEP/WAP encryption and MAC filtering. The WEP/WAP will keep other ppl from jacking into your network while the MAC filtering will ONLY allow the computers you specify to access the network. There is no such THING as "WAP" and "WEP" will take as few as four minutes to crack.

By the way, if you're using an Acer, get rid of the Acer-network management software and things may just work agai... Assuming you didn't completely sodomize your Windows installation. Quote from: Raptor on December 17, 2008, 10:37:04 AM

Solve : Wireless connection help?

Answer»

I have a LINKSYS BEFW11S4v1.50.11 router, which is a 2.4ghz 802.11b.

Now I just GOT my new laptop, which has a Dell Wireless-N card.

When I try to connect to my NETWORK, I can see the network just FINE, and after double clicking it, inputting the CORRECT password, it loads for about two or three seconds and then says: "Windows cannot connect to -network-. My old laptop has absolutely no problem connecting to it, and I heard that N-cards could downgrade in order to connect to older routers. Is my card broken or what?

Any help appreciated.Though this might help.
Nevermind, I managed to solve it.

Somewhy this laptop wont accept a WPA TKIP security. I had to downgrade to WEP .

Solve : Wireless network setup?

Answer»

I and the two girls that I live with have cable internet, but we decided that because there is only one cable hook-up in the apartment, we would just buy a wireless router and access the internet that way. It has worked out okay for them, since they had connected via wireless before and sort of knew how to go about it. I, on the other hand, have yet to get it to work with my computer. My wireless card, which is brand new, came with a driver disc that included a utility program, and so far that's what I've been using to try to get my computer to connect. But I don't know what I'm doing at all, and the program can only do so much. (I have Windows XP, btw, in case that matters)

When I click on the taskbar icon to bring up the window for "Wireless Network Connection Status," under the "Support" Tab it says, "Connection Status: Limited or No Connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network RESOURCES." This PROBLEM OCCURRED because the network did not assign a network address to the computer. Upon clicking on a button labeled "Details" it tells me the following

Physical Address: 00-12-0E-47-35-C0
IP: 169.254.100.120
Subnet: 255.255.0.0

The utility program indicates that the signal strength is around 90% and the link quality is 85%, and the other girls haven't had any problems, so it really is just an issue with my computer. I've tried the "repair" function, but it hasn't helped at all. Any suggestions on how to solve my dilemma?Open the COMMAND prompt (Start > Run > type cmd then click OK)
At the command prompt type: IPCONFIG /renew then hit enter
See if that changes anything..btw can you post what wireless router and card you're using?Need...more...info...gasp

Are the girls using the built-in Windows wireless software or are they using software like Linksys or Netgear to access the wireless router? Have you asked for their help?

You don't say what kind of router is being used / is there any kind of security (WEP,WPA) set up on it?

Alan <>< Could you please run the following command on the other girls' computer, when they're connected: ipconfig. Do this by going to Start-->Run-->cmd [enter]. Then type ipconfig [enter]

Once we know how they're set up, we can get you set up correctly. I have the same problem. the computer is a hand me down the router is a d-link DIR-300. and i hooked up a netopia usb card to the other computer. i ran ipconfig like you suggested and got the following:
ethernet dapter local area connection - media state - disconnected
ethernet adapter wireless network connection - connection specific DNS suffix - blank
autoconfig IP address - 169.254.127.222
subnet mask - 255.255.0.0
default gateway - blank
and in case you were wondering....yes i'm pretty ignorant when it comes to this stuff
thanks

Solve : In-router question?

Answer»

I go to router panel.
And here Is DHCP section.

So my question is.
IS IT POSSIBLE for user to connect to the router/ use wifi and being invisible here?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Technically it is yes, however if you have the network set up with WPA2 encryption and use a strong password then it is practically impossible for anyone to get on your network without you giving them the key. The Android APPS you are talking about in your other thread will not let anyone get on your network without your permission. It better be.
But I have found some articles:
http://mods-n-hacks.wonderhowto.com/how-to/crack-wi-fi-passwords-for-beginners-0139793/
http://comorobarwifi.org/hack-wifi-android-and-iphone-apps
...
And some others. So I want to be sure if they dont steal wifi or being invisible? If you are using WPA2 encryption the only practical way to break the password is to keep trying guesses until you get it - If you use something RELATIVELY long and random rather than dictionary words then it would take literally years to be able to crack it which nobody is going to bother doing. See the attached screenshot - With that RANDOMLY generated, 15 character password, the tool at https://www.grc.com/haystack.htm says that it would take "1.49 million centuries" to randomly guess it - So yeah, basically not going to happen! Cracking of WiFi passwords like this simply doesn't happen in the real world.

You also have to bear in mind how far your WiFi network reaches the only people who would be close enough to crack it would be your immediate neighbours or someone sitting outside.

In short, use a decent random password with WPA2 security - You'll have nothing to worry about.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Thank you camerongray - that is a comforting (and mind-boggling) bit of information.I have security as you said.
But you say neightbors STILL can crack password, how to prevent this?I said they can only crack the password by guessing it, use a secure, random password and you will be fine. Thanks for your patience.

Solve : Can't drop files to the server's Desktop folder, windows 10?

Answer» HELLO, a few days ago at my business I everyone lost the ability to drop/copy and paste files to the SERVER's Desktop folder from the other computers in the network.
They can do so to each other, except for the server. In that CASE, we need to drop the files in the Public folder.

Any ideas?

All computers run with windows 10

Thank you!You should use the public folder. That is why it is there.
Which desktop folder do you mean? Each USER has their own desktop folder (C:\users\\Desktop).

Do users RECEIVE an error when they attempt to open or copy files? If you are trying to share a specific user's Desktop folder, since it is in their profile folder I believe the ACL is set to only allow access to that local userID.

Solve : Internet Provide Device?

Answer»

I'm looking for something that would provide internet service, without having to involve an ISP but, that you would still have to PAY on a monthly basis like through straight talk or some other serviceNot sure what you mean. The normal ways of getting Internet are:
1 Over a phone line using a low speed modem.
2. Over a phone line using the ADSL protocol.
3. Over a cable used also for cable TV service.
4. Over a private microwave service.
5. Some form of the Wi-Fi services.
6. Using a Smartphone with 3G or 4G cell service with data.

The later REQUIRES a Smartphone that can display Web pages and a service contract that allows the user to send and receive data of the cell phone system. The price is not set by the number of minutes, instead iit is by the amount data downloaded. It can be very pricey. People often pay about $50 a month in addition to the regular cellular phone service.

Here is a partial list of some major companies in the USA.

Solve : Networking Setup?

Answer»

I just got a Straight Talk ZTE Z289L Z288L mobile hotspot device, so I don't have to WORRY about tethering to my phone. When I able to get on with my dad OLD phone, I had my computers CONNECTED to a WIRELESS router and then ran them to the phone and was able to get on that way. What do I NEED to set in the wireless router to connect to the hotspot device to get those machines online again Ask your ISP. It probably violates their rules. Thread locked.

Solve : Choosing a VPN or PIA?

Answer»

In any case I wouldn't recommend or use any "VPN service", you are routing your traffic through some random person/company's network with no idea how secure it is. This both slows your connection down and arguably makes it less secure.

Just my opinion.Alot of them give you full details of the programs and free trials.Going online in my opinion is a bad choice.SOMEONE please pass the popcorn...
Would like that with butter and a Coke?
From what Ive read many people use VPN`s or PIA`s you get added features like being unable to unlock web sites, security online and others. As far as unlocking websites go, then yes, a VPN can get around country restrictions, although this is legally a grey area. As far as the "improved security", a lot of this is claimed in marketing materials to encourage people to buy the services.

To be clear, a VPN will encrypt the traffic and send it from your PC to the VPN provider where it is decrypted and forwarded on to the internet. The key thing here is that the VPN provider gets the unencrypted version of the traffic so you are putting a lot of trust in them - This is why I would never use a "VPN service" myself (I run my own VPN server on server I control) although others are more than WELCOME to.

Apart from trying to hide your identity from external websites, the only legitimate use I can think of for such a VPN is if you are browsing on an untrusted public network such as free WiFi available in public places.

At any rate, these services are only designed for short term use such as when on a public WiFi network, they are not designed for or required for use all the time on your home connection. When you are connected to the VPN, all of your traffic is sent to the single VPN server rather than being sent out through several extremely high capacity links from your ISP directly to the DESTINATION. As a result, your connection through the VPN will likely be slower and have higher latency than if you are connecting out to the internet directly.

In your situation, all you will get from using a VPN service is a slower connection, less money in your bank account and an illusion of "privacy".

If someone is truly on your network maliciously (which I'm convinced isn't the case) then you have much bigger things to be worrying about than encrypting your outgoing internet traffic."(I run my own VPN server on server I control) "

So you have a sever machine and how are you running YPN on your own server?
I use WItopia which I have FOUND to be reliable and excellent quality.

Solve : Free Wi-Fi scanners - Find who is out there.?

Answer»

It has been awhile since this has been mentioned. The utility SOFTWARE with many Wi-Fi adapters is rather meager. Seldom does it help you KNOW what is going on in your NEIGHBORHOOD. A good Wi-Fi scanner can help you to:
A. LOCATE hot spots near you.
B. Find what channels your neighbors use.
C. Identify wireless Internet Service in your area.

Here are five that look good:
Acrylic WiFi (Windows)
AirGrab WiFi Radar (Mac OS X)
Cain & Abel (Windows) << This site MIGHT be blocked.
Wireless Diagnostics (Mac OS X Lion and later)
WirelessNetView (Windows)

This is based on an article from Network World.
Free Wi-Fi survey Tools
Do you use any of the above?

Solve : Inquiry over "Locked" Downstream Channels!?

Answer»

Hello Members,

Please refer to the enclosed URL reference, & help ascertain the "Locked" status showing up against all Downstream channels?

Does this suggest any kind of anomaly? Can this be an impediment in acquiring the Top Internet speeds?

& Finally, should this be brought to the notice of my ISP to ensure a steady,RELIABLE & consistent performance of my Internet Connection?

Please suggest.....

URL reference - http://bit.ly/2aH0dWsThat seems to be a Wirelesses report. DOCSIS cable modem. At bootup it tries to find channels and when it does it LOCKS to each one. You want channels to lock. If you see unlocked channels, you have a poor connection. You have all 8 downstream channels locked QAM256. That's good. Your connection is good. However maximum speed not guaranteed because many factors including ISP network infrastructure, utilisation, etc can affect this.

Dear Members!

Thanks a lot for the confirmation! I thought it to be a kind of anomaly that I must take up with my ISP! But what about Upload streams? 2 of these are showing up as unlocked?

Nevertheless, is there a parameter which governs how QUICKLY an Internet Connection acquires its Top speed?

To Geek-9pm:::

I have turned off the Wireless interface rather & use the Connection only via a LAN interface!

If you have slower up speed service then you need fewer locked upstream channels.

Solve : Disabling secondary router (repeater)?

Answer»

My ROUTER is main.
Neighbour have secondary router, and he USES it to steal my internet ( same HOUSE )
Is there any possiible way... to fill something in router settings- to MAKE repeater unable to access internet?Change your WiFi password and set it to use WPA2 security. With a secure enough password (make it COMPLETELY random) it will be practically impossible for them to connect.

Solve : Unauthorized access?

Answer»

Scenario:
There is 1 cable and 2 routers.
A cable has 2 lan wires, one comes for me, and another one for thief.
My router is A. Thief router is B.
If I unplug ALL wires from my router, B cannot cant ACCESS internet.
If I plug-in ALL wires for my router. B can access internet.

The prevention.
Even If i have set up strong wifi password, constantly changing it.
Added MAC filtering.
Thief still can access internet. Even I dont see any unknown devices on DHCP list.
Is there any options to fill in the router, to stop unauthorized access?Yes, there is a sway to do that.
First, you should give some more detail.
Is this a home network, a small office network or a large campus network?
What are the model numbers of the two routers?
Why are two routers needed?
Where are the routers located?
Are both routers also Wireless AP?
(AP = Access Point, the normal mode for wireless router.)

Do you have some kind of guide you used to connect two routers together?
Example:
How to Connect Two Routers
With more information we can find the Internet Pirate.
Either myself or somebody else will help you with your Internet Pirate. How has a theif plugged a cable into your router? What makes you so sure that someone is stealing your connection? Home network.# This is dictation. The wireless system used in home networks is sometimes called Wi-Fi and I have to teach this program what Wi-Fi means. From now on when I say it Wi-Fi it means a wireless phone system. Okay, that was not for you, it was for my dictation secretary. She is kind of dumb, actually she is a computer program.

I see you have a home network. That presuppose you connected a second router in order to increase the range of the Wi-Fi signal and make Wi-Fi available in your entire house. Here is the apparent flaw in your plan. If both routers have Wireless access, then both routers have to have password enabled. Also, the physical location of the second router is critical. Here is why.
Let's suppose you have a neighbor that is quite friendly and generally honest and would never steal anything out of your garage. But sometimes you leave the garage door unlocked and your neighbor sneaks in through the garage door locates your router and PRESSES the reset button on the back of the router. He knows that will clear the password on the Wi-Fi access and he now can get into your Wi-Fi without knowing the password because there is no password. This is one of the reasons why a second router should not be in a location where somebody can access it without your knowledge.
Now that's one point and that assumes you have the second router in the garage. But now for the second point that you have to pay attention to.
The password of the second router is controlled only by the second router. The first router will not transfer password information to the second router. In other words, home routers are not MADE to work together as integrated systems. The second router does not inherit the password restrictions imposed by the first router. The first router can only control Wi-Fi access on its own Wi-Fi transponder. The second router has to have a password set for its on-board wireless transponder.
Depending on how the routers are set up, it might not be possible to access the second router through the first router. In that case you have to take the cable that goes to the second router and plug it into your computer. Then you can access the second router using the local IP address for that router. Possibly the address would be: 192.168.0.1 and that is what you would put in the address bar of the browser. You will have to check your documentation to see how your routers are set up for local IP address. Anyway, when you get into the second router you'll have to set the password for the second router. Also, you might want to take a note about what channel each router is using. The routers should use different channels but could share the same password. In fact, both routers could use the same station ID and the same password if they have different channels. Went to routers are together in the same area it is important that they do not use adjacent channels or even the same channel. So you would have to come up with a set of channel numbers that would just reduce interference in your area.
Nevertheless, the most important point is that both routers must have their own Wi-Fi password in place. As for the MAC filter in the first router, it may only work for the Wi-Fi section of the router. And as I stated earlier, each router handles Wi-Fi separately.

To summarize, you need to set the Wi-Fi password for the second router. And you need to make sure the second router is not in a location where somebody could sneak in and reset the router.

I believe those two details will resolve your problem.
You still haven't explained what makes you so sure that someone else is stealing your connection...yes.
And the another small question.
If first router have disabled wifi radio, can the second router support wireless devices?
And. If second router is dependant by 1st router, and it be invisible in DHCP list?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Here is a screenshot from my XFINITY router.
Notice there are lots of things on my network.

All of the devices I can IDENTIFY. In my case, all of the DHCP is under the control of the main router

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway

Make sure the second router lets the first do DCHP.
Wireless security is under the control of the router that gives access. If first router has no wireless the second router can do wireless. Even with first doing DHCP.
Does that help?
(1) Please explain why you think someone is stealing your connection

(2) Your screenshot shows that your router is sitting on the IP range 180.168.x.x - This is a public IP range and should therefore not be used on your router, did you change this? This should be set to an internal range such as 192.168.x.x. As it is configured currently, you risk being unable to access certain servers.

(3) The DHCP doesn't have to list all devices, only those that obtained their IP address automatically.Quote from: camerongray on July 30, 2016, 03:58:26 PM

Squall's new account?I mean. How to detect devices who have static IP. And how to block them?OK, I am GOING to leave here. The OP says he has two routers and he says he can tell the a pirate is on the second router. I tole him to set wireless password on second router and keep the router out of sight or reach of the pirate. He did not respond to my advice. Instead he comes back with another scenario about use of static IP in the DHCP table.

I am leaving.
I'm also going to leave this, apart from someone supposedly acting suspiciously, there is absolutely nothing indicating that the connection is being stolen or that there are two routers, WiFi is disabled as well making stealing the connection impossible without having physical access.

All I'm going to say is - Change the IPs back to being 192.168.x.x - As it is currently (180.168.x.x) is incorrect and will lead to issues accessing certain websites.

Solve : Need Help With Internet on my PC?

Answer»

I always have used a wired connection to my modem with an ethernet cable but lately when I used it it said i was connected to the wifi router but was still getting 0 internet access. I switched over to using a wireless adapter on my PC and i will have internet for a few minutes to an hour and then it will star to PERIODICALLY cut me off from internet. I know it isnt my internet or SERVICE provider because on my SMARTPHONES and tablets I get flawless internet access. Check that the USB port the wifi adapter is plugged into is not set to turn off after a certain period of time.

To troubleshoot your wired connection that used to work: a) move the cable to a DIFFERENT port on the router (ports do go bad) and b) try a new cable (ethernet CABLES go bad too).Wifi router does it in every one. I'd like to resolve this without spending money.gh12345,
Information you gave suggest that your main computer is having trouble. You need to give details about your computer. Make, Model and age. And whaich operating system.
Have you recently added any new programs?
A new game? A new program to optimize the computer?
Have you recently added new eternal devices? Such as a new printer?
Have you changed the about of memory?

Sometimes failures are not apparent by symptoms alone. A bad power supply could cause some parts of the computer to fail. That s rare, but does happen.
Since the smartphone and tablets are able to connect wirelessly, it isn't your router.
You tried every port in the router and none worked. It would be extremely rare for all 4 ports to go bad.

I don't see how you can avoid spending money to troubleshoot this issue
The cheapest solution, buy a new CAT cable. (or borrow one from a friend to test)
https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=102&cp_id=10208&cs_id=1020805&p_id=9548&seq=1&format=2
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Link-Depot-5-Ethernet-Enhanced-CAT6-Networking-Cable-Black/15074921

If the new or borrowed cable gives the same results, then your ethernet/NIC card could be going bad. Then you could either open up the pc and install a new card or buy a USB to ethernet adapter.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833704073
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAUJ41K8611

Of course, you if you have trouble with the USB to wifi adapter, you might have to look at the power to the USB ports.
If the wifi works off and on, then a USB to ethernet adapter could have the same issues.

Hi everyone I am really having a huge problem with my router right now, All over 1 site. My bank site, www.royalbank.com I just cannot sign into my bank at all through any broswer or computer/phone in my house, Everything on the site works fine but when i go to sign into online banking i get this ERROR The requested URL "[no URL]", is invalid.

I have tried EVERYTHING, flushing my dns, renewing my ip, upgrading my firmware on the router, changing my dns to googles,I couldnt even get help from someone who works at dlink which btw my router is a dlink DIR-816L. I just dont know what to do and I know its the router because when i plug my computer directly into my modem it works, Same with my phone if I use MOBILE data. I know nobody changed anything in the router because im the only one who has the password. The site worked before as we have had this router for about a year now and It just started doing this a few days ago. I really need help, here and if anyone knows anything that would be appreciated. I have also unplugged it and the modem for over 5 minutes and nothing. I set the router up myself from a video so its probably not set up the best but it works, I will reset it and redo everything if i have to but i dont really REMEMBER how haha so if anyone can help me i will love you thanks- ken.So multiple devices are getting same error?

Banks have had their systems crash before and give messages like this. Most banks have adequate support for banking. Have you contacted the bank yet to see if they can help?Hello yes i did and they said everything is fine on there endQuote

I just dont know what to do and I know its the router because when i plug my computer directly into my modem it works

Sorry I just realized when I read this earlier and had someone talking to me at same time I didnt see this detail. So it is a router config issue from the looks of it. Do you have DNS set up in the router to point to static DNS addresses vs using the DNS that is PROVIDED by your ISP? If so, set the router up to not have static DNS entries and instead rely on your ISP's DNS IP ADDRESS to deal with DNS instead of your router providing redirection to an alternate DNS IP address server.

You already have the fastest connection possible.
What are you lacking?

EDIT: Are you thinking about Wi-Fi? If you want speed, you get the best speed using gigabit Ethernet, not wireless.
Quote

1000BASE-T (also known as IEEE 802.3ab) is a standard for Gigabit Ethernet over copper wiring. Each 1000BASE-T network segment can be a maximum length of 100 meters (330 feet), and must use CATEGORY 5 cable or better (including Cat 5e and Cat 6).
Gigabit Wi-Fi can not match this range unless you employ special ANTENNAS, which may defeat the purpose of Wi-Fi.

To extend the range of a fiber system, you use more fiber.I want to connect a router with my modam /PC by which I can connect my other wireless devices to the internet Any current home wireless router will provide normal Wi-Fi service. But he speed may only be 54 mega bits per second. Some routers go for over $150, but it is hard to justify the extra cost. Some very good routers are under $100.

I have used Net gear, Linksys and D-link routers. They are work as advertised. ome can do up to 150 Mbps. You might want to look into the gigabit wireless units, but the range is limited. Here is a Netgear for about $80 and claims to be a gigabit router. I have been happy with my Netgear router similar to this one.

I know there is good Cisco router which work very well. This is Cheaper model and give strong signal. It Cisco871w-g-a-k9. And cisco routers never fails.
http://www.routersale.com/cisco-router/buy-sell/used-new-cisco871w-g-a-k9-price-toronto-canadaGiven the connection is fibre to the premises, I IMAGINE it's pretty fast, therefore I would get something with Gigabit ethernet and 802.11ac wireless so you can take full advantage of it. I can't suggest any in particular but stick to reputable, popular brands.

Solve : Please help assess this SNMP-Event log.?

Answer»

Hello There!

Please help me assess the accurate implications over Network performance/Optimized Internet experience on the basis of the attached SNMP-event log.

Are the Warnings signify any major concern? Should these be brought to the notice of my ISP?

What sort of Performance-degradation could one experience upon a routine encounter with these impediments?

Please suggest on the possible implications in a layman language.

Inputs will be sincerely appreciated, & are keenly awaited. :-)

Thank you.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Are the Warnings signify any major concern? Should these be brought to the notice of my ISP?

Before contacting ISP on this if its their cause, I would make sure its their hardware and not an issue with your own.
There appears to be a log of issues here and this is a very general log. You would want to pinpoint the cause more before contacting ISP if its an ISP issue.

I'd ping www.google.com -t from command shell and monitor for lost packets and communication issues. I'd also ping the snmp server at the same time in another window. If you see a network issue in which both have an issue at the same time then the problem is likely your internet connection. If the problem is only with snmp then its and issue with snmp only and not internet connection issue. You would contact the snmp provider tio have then troubleshoot from their end such as a loop back test.

More testing is needed. Are you familiar with testing NETWORKS for problems beyond just this log to diagnose this issue further and isolate the cause?Hello DaveLembke!

Thanks for a comprehensive reply.
I do know on how to use a PING command with the syntax that you have suggested, but don't know how to open 2 command shell windows simultaneously to assess responses from both (Domain name & SNMP) at the same time?

Well Iam keen to diagnose this issue even further, so kindly help suggest on the next course. Thanks.

Just to make one more thing clear over here, that I never use the default DNS of my ISP but alternatives only! (like GoogleDNS, OpenDNS..etc.)

Now could that be the 'Behind the scene' factor to trigger such Warnings?

Nevertheless, Iam all ready to isolate the cause & probe the matter further...

Please suggest.. :-)

Hello DaveLembke!

Iam keenly awaiting a response from your end.

Please "Update" the status.

Thanks.Hello and SORRY for the delay in getting back to you. From the windows RUN command under START, enter CMD and hit enter key then move the command shell window where you want it on your screen. Then repeat the process of running CMD at Start->Run to open up as many command shell windows as you need. You then can run simultaneous testing pinging multiple locations at the same time, so when there is a connection issue if it shows up on only one specific ping and not all at the same time, then its a problem at their end the SNMP server end.Dear DaveLembke,

Please confirm that when you say Ping SNMP server...does it automatically mean Ping the default gateway of my Internet router?

In my case, Router's Interface or the default gateway is accessed via entering 192.168.x.x at the address bar within Web browser!

So pinging SNMP would obviously mean>> ping 192.168.x.x -t ?

Am I correct in its interpretation? Please suggest.Where is the SNMP server located?

That will determine where you ping. If you have your own SNMP server then it will be a local ping to that servers IP address. If its through a host that you pay for, then it will be the IP through that SNMP host.Dear DaveLembke,

Iam not quite able to get your point!? I do not have my own SNMP server!
The Log posted against the Original missive signify the data showing up under "Diagnostics" section within my Router's interface!

I ACCESS my Router using 192.168.x.x URL within the Address-bar of the browser.

So how to get hold of the Real-SNMP address you are talking about?

Does the external Software programs such as Networx..etc. can help determine the intricacies of my Network to probe further in this matter?

Please suggest.. ok so your SNMP service is in your router.. thats local at the same IP as router. ping that persistent and look for lost packets then. if no problems with pings then everything should be good. Which device is linked to the mac address in error listing in the initial pic you linked, that device is having the issues with router.Dear DaveLembke!

Would like to confirm that persistent PING with Router's interface ::192.168.x.x are showing up no data packet losses & neither does the persistent PING with www.google.com is able to show up anything unusual!

As far as MAC Address is concerned, the only interface available within the Router which mentions anything in regard to that is enclosed alongwith.

Please suggest further....& lastly, isn't there a 'Smart-Way' to identify 'LAGS n Latency' within a Network using any of the available Freeware?

Guidance will be sincerely appreciated. Thank you.

EDIT::: The MAC Address showing up against the Original SNMP Log pertains to the connected Router only! Please refer to the 2nd screenshot.

Nothing unusual to router (LOCAL) and to google (WAN) would indicate that all should be well. So... where is the problem then? If there are only very few entries in the logs but 99.9% of the time all is well, then all should be well.

As far as lags and latency, ping itself has all those features. At the end of the ping when terminated it will give you minimum, maximum, and average latency + count of failed pings which should equal 0, and it is the FREE and Smart-Way

All I know is to just X the window, & therefore "Net Outcomes" are not evident with such a stance!

Secondly, Are Speed-Tests the only available criterion to gauge the Potency of an ISP's Network for the end-users?

Are there any Comprehensive tools available for the end-users to showcase the entire N/w Health, Performance, efficiency to their ISPs?

How can the end-Users compel their ISPs to improve on the basis of a sustained Data-Compilation?Pressing Control + C will terminate the ping that is running with -t persistent. And you will get the summary that you didnt see before. Sorry I forgot to disclose this earlier. I thought I typed the CTRL + C as the exit method to the ping, but looking back I forgot to.

I need some help in SETTING up wired file sharing between two computers(one runnin XP and another win 7).I am successful in establishing connection. The doubt is when I remove the password on the shared file will the users across the world tooo can access it (as the ROUTER is also connected to the internet). If yes how to set up protected file sharing?
And the username and password being asked,is it the user login that i use to login to the computer?Short answer:
It is normal for two or more PCs in a local wired connection will use IP NUMBERS that are not used on the Internet. This is part of the basic design of how the internet works. This is called the IPV4 standard.
That means that your local computers will not be r sen om the Internet, even if there are no passwords in use. In fact, it takes special effort to make you local files visible on the Internet.

Im not really familiar with these devices. I need help about it. ATM it is very important for me.

1.Do they can BYPASS router security, if they are simply plugged into socket?
2. Is there routers routers available, who can work normal and not needed LAN wire?1. No
2. Define "work normal".Quote from: plodr on August 20, 2016, 12:05:40 PM

1. No
2. Define "work normal".

2. To be access point (AP). Just to do all router functions.
For exmaple my router is plugged to 'Lan wire" and 'cable wire'. ( cable wire goes to || I dont know what device it is || but it is written on it "POWER ACTIVE LAN POE". So my router must have plugged 3 wires in total to work.)

And I asked, is there some kind of routers, who would not require these wires, and just being enought to be mounted to the socket? Most routers sold today for home use are both Wireless and Ethernet
This link claims to know which are best:
http://www.gadgetreview.com/best-wireless-router-for-home-gaming-mac-overall-2015-2016

Here is an image of a favorite.

Four antenna is not really needed. But looks good.

The level of security depends much on the CHOICES you make.

Presently I am using a router with modem provided by my Internet company. I can either git into it with Ethernet or with wireless. I have selected apasswordtahtI believe is secure.

Also, I have a repeater in the tool shed to let my daughter have Internet in here apartment behind the house. It has the same password. Works good.So the router can be without ports? ( talking about WAN and ethernet Ports, those at the router back. )

Neatgear also makes a router that is similar to this.

Any computer or device that wants to connect via wireless must use a password or comply with some kind of security method.
Password is not required for a Ethernet connection. Therefore, the router must be place in a locati9on that has a locked door or restricted physical entry.

To my knowledge, most modern Wi-Fi routers will allow a repeater with password PROTECTION. On some repeaters the rest button might not reset the password.

Does that answer your questions?

So the router can be without ports?
No.
The router connects to the modem by ethernet cable. There has to be a WAN port.
The LAN ports are to connect devices that you want wired to the router. Even switches and hubs have ports.

At least one device should be wired to the router. Security-wise, you turn OFF remote administration. You don't want someone remotely breaking into the router and changing all the settings, INCLUDING the password.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]A range extender may or may not have other ports. It works off the antenna of a wireless router.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Yeah, useful info.
Some info about my router:
Firmware: 3.9.7 Build 090821 Rel.58159n
Hardware: WR841N v5 00000000
Perhaps my router is old and have alot of flaws.

But I got a new question.
How about "satellite internet" ? (In this case, I figured out, that person always connects extra device (because of noise I hear), perhaps it is adapter.)

Can satellite router( or receiver ) bypass my router, im sure it requires WAN port, etc...?
Because If I Unplug my router and 'black anthena wire' ( which is connected to device named 'Power Active LAN POE') , that person goes mad.For example like this?

https://www.strong.tv/downloads/leaflets/8530_LL_EN.pdfOkay, enough of your paranoia. No more questions about bypassing routers or who is accessing your internet. I'm locking this thread and you need to stop wasting EVERYONE's time with this nonsense on our site.

Solve : Physical or Cloud Database Server?

Answer»

This is more of a theory CRAFTING question/sounding board. I'm a business owner/end-user, but I'm fairly sophisticated in IT. So the facts: I have two locations, about 200 miles apart, both small retail stores (6-10 workstations). The first location has been up and RUNNING for over a year, the 2nd location will be coming online in a few months. Location 1 currently has in-house Win Server 2012, which runs our retail point-of-sale software/foxpro database. This software basically tracks all our inventory, purchases, receiving, sales and does full accounting. So basically we can't live without it. Location 2 is a second location license on this particular software, so both stores will/can use the same database/inventory, and it allows in-store transfers.. etc...

So now to my dilemma? HOW TO CONNECT THEM?!?!

I see two options (unless you can think of another):
Option 1:
Physical: I maintain the physical server at a single location, and use a location-location VPN to connect the 2nd location as a branch, using UPS as back-up power, I try to ensure physical server never goes down, or else both stores are non-operational.
Pros: Easier to setup, all servers and deployment is done in our physical control.
Cons: If location 2 loses power, or has server issues, location 2 is affected as well by any down time.

Option 2:
Cloud: Using AWS or some other VPS service, host a virtual WINDOWS server to host the software/database. Have each location VPN to the VPS, and a second location-location VPN so they can share other resources.
Pros: Isolated cloud system should not have failures, and each store can run independently, as long as the VPS doesn't have issues.
Cons: More complicated to setup. Slower?

----

Having never used any cloud vps systems, I'm a little worried about speed. Because everything/EVERY sale/every po issued, every entry made on any workstation must hit the server, is there any issue with speed? The software is pretty dated (they are slowly working on making an SQL version), so basically every workstation runs the app, from the server directly. Will I have any performance issues?

Any other options? Are these the only 2 ways to do this? Are there other pros/cons, obviously, as mine are not very robust!

Thanks!Moving to a remote VPS is certainly more work but in the long run you would benefit from better resiliency as the provider should take care of maintaining the HARDWARE. You of course will have higher network latency from Location 1 since the server is no longer local however Location 2 will likely benefit since the latency to the remote VPS will almost certainly be lower than if it were connecting to the other branch directly (the VPS will likely have a much faster network connection). As long as both locations have a decent internet connection, I wouldn't worry too much about this causing issues.

I wouldn't worry too much about performance of the VPS - Modern virtual machine performance is extremely close to that of bare metal so if you go with a decent VPS provider and get a decently specced VPS, performance will be fine.

As for the VPNs, you may be able to get away with just having each location connect to the VPS - If it's set up correctly you should be able to configure it to route traffic between each site via the VPS.

The one issue to bear in mind with a VPS is that if the internet connection at either site fails, that site will be unable to connect so getting some sort of backup connection (3g/4g potentially) would be worthwhile.

The other option although it may be overly complicated or not possible with your given database/software would be to have a server in each site and then have the databases automatically replicate in some way - Each site then talks to its local server but they are both kept in sync. This is something to look into although it may be more trouble than it's worth.

Solve : Router loses internet connection?

Answer»

I have a Netgear N600 WNDR3400v3 updated
to the latest firmware in my house..

I recently moved into a new apartment and about a week ago we started noticing
a very annoying problem...

The router will lose internet connection at random times, SOMETIMES the internet light will
go orange other times it will be off completely. I've tried calling my ISP and they haven't been
particularly helpful.. I was wondering if there was maybe some sort of setting that could be
causing this to happen?

You recently moved. - Right?
The N600 WNDR3400v3 does not have a modem.

I would guess the issue is with the modem.

What modem do you have?
Is it from the telephone company?
From the Cable TV company?

The ISP MAY need to revise or verify the connection to modem . Some modems are very sensitive to changes to changes in wire or able loss.
Id have the ISP send a tech out to your HOME to test the cable. Far greater PROBABILITY that there is an issue with the ISP GETTING their service to you vs your own hardware being the cause for this specific type of issue.

Solve : Can anyone tell me why i have these established connections??

Answer»

Hi guys, im no expert, and was hoping if someone could fill me in on these connections via netstat, a little worried its not nothing.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]They do not seem to be unusual.
Why are you worried? Do you have some kind of odd behavior on your system?
Quote

In computing, netstat (network statistics) is a command-line network utility tool that displays network connections for the Transmission Control Protocol (both incoming and outgoing), routing tables, and a number of network interface (network interface controller or software-defined network interface) and network ...
Seldom, if ever, do most users need to use this.
When you connect to the Internet, SEVERAL things start to happen. Thee are different services that Windows programs may need for normal use. For example, programs check for updates, security certificates are verified and so on.If you want to look for unusual activity, I would run wireshark and tell it to monitor your NIC. And dont use your computer and see if its broadcasting or receiving connections to an outside IP address. Then perform an IP address lookup to see what the IP matches. Most of the time its nothing, but sometimes you can find issues this way. I for example had a strange network traffic occuring on a system a while back and tracked it down to Pando Media Booster that came with a free game that was turning my system into a seed for a bit torrent that I didnt want happening. So I shut off the seed of my system to others because my upload speed was getting crippled with my system serving up files for others to download. Netstat will show open ports etc, but other than that its not as helpful as trapping packets and looking up as to what the traffic is up to with wireshark.

Do you have any odd behavior that has you looking for malware or a hacker etc?Hi thanks.

Purpose of me asking is i found software from here installed

http://www.hhdsoftware.com/device-monitoring-studio

Someone may have installed it as a trial. Do other people have "physical access" to your computer to install stuff such as roommate etc? Someone would have had to have physical access to the system to install this or a virus or malware allow REMOTE admin access to install the trial.

Thing is that if your system was hacked, the hacker would have used a keylogger or something that runs as a TSR that is better stealthed from detection. Any hacker using a trial of a tool like this to gain information would be a hacker that isnt very well skilled and likely refers to script kiddie means of hacking.

I feel someone with physical access to your system installed this vs a hacker as a greater probability. So uninstall the software and keep others off of your computer and the problem should be solved.

And personally i suspect someone who is no computer hacker.

if i press right click, source, on the CODE some of the entries are what i consider not legit. ive seen code in a "container"? which i read is a way for something to run without my pc being able to see it?
There are these DOMBreak points, event listeners? not to sure what they are but certain sites have a delay on when i enter the url. facebook will always tell me the first login attempt is incorrect.

Im no expert about certifcates when visiting websites but every sites certifcate when i VIEW it is

"Ensures the identiy of a local computer" followed by a long code underneath

The other day after accidently somehow geting on to the source page for the first time ever it told me i was printing 71 pages and it baffled me, but investigating i think it is something which is capturing the html code and being used in something called an aplication gatway. I also have a printer installed set as my default which i have no access to because its denied, ms xms document writer

As id been suspecying something for a while i downloaded a program called prtg and afew hours after lookinh around and trying to learn it a new connection apeared under virtual machines under the name of my pc

I could be completely wrong but i think that every device on my network is being surveyed remotely.

You are reading Javascript source and pointing at anything remotely related to the problems you are having as a possible culprit. references to "container" DOMBreakpoint's, event listeners, etc are perfectly normal in Javascript.

I have a wireless router, repeater. I can set it up and it dose FIND the local wifi. And i can create a new wifi access POINT. But when I log on the Internet with my computer from the repeater it says that there is no Internet access. Are you able to get a screen shot of the configuration so we can look over your configuration. Additionally what are the make/models of the main router and the access point or router acting as an access point repeater?

*Some devices dont communicate with others to act as repeaters, we can rule this out if we know what make/model of your wireless devices are to VERIFY that they will work together correctly. I had a Linksys router for example that refused to work with a D-Link as a repeater because the Linksys I had needed to be paired with another Linksys in order to sync correctly as a repeater.Internet Configuration

I have one of their USB Wireless Adapters for one of my laptops and the adapter has been troublesome when not right on top of a strong wireless signal to connect to. Instead of using DYNAMIC DNS, set the DNS in the router to a static IP and this way it wont change. Additionally hopefully your routers password is different than that of what it shipped with as for default passwords are the biggest security problem in the world of wifi security. It is set to static DNS (Google free dns, the numbers are easy to remember when typing in every 15 minutes!)
The Admin password has been changed when first used and every day or so for the last month. Admin does not have the AUTHORITY to change the SUPPORT password, so I am stuck with that.
BTW Malware bytes and AVG both run clean, but I don't expect it's a PC problem as it occurs when the PC is switched off.Quote

Customers of Vispa Internet have been informed that the ISP will be changing their Domain Name Servers (DNS) from the current ones (62.24.228.24 – 25) to a new set (83.217.161.161 – 162).
NOTE: In some regions a range of IP assignments might be reserved for a special use. I am familiar with the DNS servers that Vispa prefers it's clients to use, the ones that hijack my settings are managed (if that's the right word) by
Digital Ocean:-
139.59.165.202
188.166.150.116
Bhost inc:-
176.126.247.157
Neither company can be bothered to respond to any COMMUNICATION!
This sounds like SOMETHING malicious to me, especially given the Admin password being changed. If the DNS server is changed to something malicious then it allows an attacker to redirect you to different websites. Digital Ocean and BHost just rent out servers, anyone can rent one to host whatever they want (including malicious DNS servers).

I would completely reset the router (after noting down all your connection settings.etc) and set it up again from SCRATCH setting the Admin password to something secure (and disabling remote management if there's an option) - If the router has been used with the default admin password and it allows people to connect to it over the internet it is possible that an attacker has been able to log into it and change the admin password/DNS server. It may also be worth updating the firmware on the router if a newer version is available to ensure that is patched against any security flaws that may have been discovered in that model.

If you still have issues after doing this, you may want to look at just replacing the router, it's a pretty old Wireless G model, a better replacement won't break the bank!

Solve : Really bad ping spiking - only on new computer?

Answer»

I recently bought a new PC to REPLACE my ageing laptop that I hoped I would be able to play graphically not-terrible video games on and the like, but whereas on my laptop the internet connection was nice and smooth, on my new custom desktop I have a consistently good download speed like before, but while playing I get often and severe, though irregular, ping spikes. Really could use some help as I'm stumped! (not that I'm well trained in internet troubleshooting)

ISP is Keysurf or Keycom (one or the other). I've currently got my PC and my phone connected to the WiFi but the lag spikes remain when I disconnect my phone.

Used a ping tracking program and it seems to be normal (~30ms) until I am USING the internet for something, be it a game or a video, and then the ping starts spiking.

No ETHERNET availability where I live so that's not a possible solution.

Also tried turning off Antivirus and updating drivers.

As you reach bandwidth congestion you will see latency spikes. That do you get for speeds through www.speedtest.net? Do any of the games have updates going on in the background where new game content is downloading and consuming bandwidth? What games are played when the spike happens. ( I had an issue with a free to play game with Pando media booster making my gameplay LATENT I was being a seed for other players to get game content updated through the torrent connection . ) I killed Pando Media Booster to remove myself from being a seed and this fixed that issue. http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=3540462

Is this wifi shared with any others who might be using bandwidth, as well as what is your signal strength, weaker signal strength will increase latency as for you could have dropped packets and it then has to resend packets which ADDS lag. If you can connect hard wired to the internet and see how it behaves that might help to. You then would know if its your wifi as the problem vs ISP connection.Hey, thanks for replying. It is League of Legends that I play, funnily enough, but I installed it after they got rid of Pando Media Booster.

The WiFi is shared with many others, yes, and I would attribute this problem to that except it only happens on one computer and not the other. I cannot connect wired to the internet due to it not being available in my university residences currently (I found this out after I bought an ethernet cable, and tried).

I've linked a video of some league gameplay (not particularly impressive) to give you an idea of what the problem looks like.

Ping spikes are very, very hard to isolate. So you will have to do a lot of stetting and waiting.

Solve : DHCP Request?

Answer»

Hi,
there are 4 steps in DHCP: Discover, Offer, Request and Acknowledge. Why is the THIRD step called "Request"? No ONE is requesting anything at this step, are they? The client simply is saying that it will accept the IP given by the DHCP server. Where is the "request" portion at this step? The request is used because some networks have more than one DHCP server. The request PICKS a server to get the IP lease.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Reading the link you posted, it LOOKS like the "request" is referring to the client requesting a lease from the server. Is that correct?YES that is right.

Solve : Desktop PC won't connect to Wifi...?

Hello,
I've just gotten a new ISP (HONESTLY, it's the same provider but with a different router and ip address with the bill being in a different name) and while all other devices I own are ABLE to get a connection just fine, my desktop pc is unable to for some reason. I own an HP p6813w with Windows 7 Premium and a Roswell RNX-N600UBE usb wifi adapter and after automatically recognizing and connecting to the proper SSID, a yellow icon appears over the internet tab saying "unidentified network no internet access" and when I use Internet Explorer a page saying "Your not connected to a network" appears.

I know this has something to do with my Network and Sharing Center settings, but I'm not sure what. You said...

So do you get a connection using the Ethernet cable?

About the fancy adapter. Does it work on any other computer?
Is it new? Old? My gussies that it never worked. **

** negative reviews from users and the product has been discontinued.I haven't tried an ethernet connection yet but will do as I would either have to carry the PC from the 2nd floor to the living room where the router is located or get a ridiculously long ethernet CORD.

The adapter was purchased brand new a year ago and I did try it on a laptop and worked perfectly. I also tried re-installing the SOFTWARE for it on my desktop but to no avail which is why I'm sure it has to do with the Network & Sharing settings. If you have a smartphone with a WI-fi hot sport, you have a tool you can used to test the adapter.

Really, an extremely long Ethernet cable is a good thing to have in your tool box. Standard Ethernet cable can run 100 meters, 328 feet, and still work good. Handy way to troubleshoot Wi-fi issues.

If you need a good cheap Wi-Fi adapter, most of the cheap things now on line will work well. See Amazon, Best Buy r Newegg. Or even Walmart.

For $8, it is cheaper that buying a long Ethernet cable.

Are you sure the wireless connection with your laptop was using your WiFi adapter? Could the laptop have been connecting via its built-in WiFi adapter?

Solve : making hp laserjet 100 m175a network enabled?

Answer»

i have hp laserjet 100 m175a and want to make it network enabled as per somebodys suggestion i bought a tp link 110u print server but after two days i was informed it is not compatible any suggestions how i can make it wired or wireless network enaledShare it through a computer that is connected to network is a method.

Doesnt have to be that powerful of a computer either. Looking at drivers they have drivers going back to Windows XP for this so any healthy computer Pentium II 233Mhz running Windows XP or faster/newer could work as a print server with shared printer tied to it. For best results I WOULD SUGGEST a Pentium 4 or newer with 1GB RAM for this APPLICATION as for the computer needs to spool the print jobs and so better performance would be with a newer computer that is connected directly to this via USB cable and then shared for all others on network to use.

*Slowest computer I tested as a print server like this was a Pentium III 550Mhz with 256MB RAM running Windows XP SP2 on a 12GB HDD for a food store that needed to have the SIGN printer set away from the workstations and the USB/Ethernet Iogear Print Server wasnt working to well with large print jobs. Small print jobs worked but larger file print jobs the IOGear print server wouldnt work properly to pass the print task to the printer, it would start printing part of a page and then stop or not print at all with the USB/Ethernet print server device, yet PUTTING this Pentium 3 system in place and idle connected to the network all print tasks printed perfect and at a good pace.
