Answer» I and the two girls that I live with have cable internet, but we decided that because there is only one cable hook-up in the apartment, we would just buy a wireless router and access the internet that way. It has worked out okay for them, since they had connected via wireless before and sort of knew how to go about it. I, on the other hand, have yet to get it to work with my computer. My wireless card, which is brand new, came with a driver disc that included a utility program, and so far that's what I've been using to try to get my computer to connect. But I don't know what I'm doing at all, and the program can only do so much. (I have Windows XP, btw, in case that matters)
When I click on the taskbar icon to bring up the window for "Wireless Network Connection Status," under the "Support" Tab it says, "Connection Status: Limited or No Connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network RESOURCES." This PROBLEM OCCURRED because the network did not assign a network address to the computer. Upon clicking on a button labeled "Details" it tells me the following
Physical Address: 00-12-0E-47-35-C0 IP: 169.254.100.120 Subnet: 255.255.0.0
The utility program indicates that the signal strength is around 90% and the link quality is 85%, and the other girls haven't had any problems, so it really is just an issue with my computer. I've tried the "repair" function, but it hasn't helped at all. Any suggestions on how to solve my dilemma?Open the COMMAND prompt (Start > Run > type cmd then click OK) At the command prompt type: IPCONFIG /renew then hit enter See if that changes anything..btw can you post what wireless router and card you're using?Need...more...info...gasp
Are the girls using the built-in Windows wireless software or are they using software like Linksys or Netgear to access the wireless router? Have you asked for their help?
You don't say what kind of router is being used / is there any kind of security (WEP,WPA) set up on it?
Alan <>< Could you please run the following command on the other girls' computer, when they're connected: ipconfig. Do this by going to Start-->Run-->cmd [enter]. Then type ipconfig [enter]
Once we know how they're set up, we can get you set up correctly. I have the same problem. the computer is a hand me down the router is a d-link DIR-300. and i hooked up a netopia usb card to the other computer. i ran ipconfig like you suggested and got the following: ethernet dapter local area connection - media state - disconnected ethernet adapter wireless network connection - connection specific DNS suffix - blank autoconfig IP address - 169.254.127.222 subnet mask - 255.255.0.0 default gateway - blank and in case you were wondering....yes i'm pretty ignorant when it comes to this stuff thanks RodMacedo91, please start a new topic.
