I have Libre Office on my Linux machines and it's pretty useful, and I can use it on MS Office files and vice versa.I've been using WPS Office for over a year - maybe over two years by now - on two PC's.   I can save in the Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint file formats.  They seem to have become a bit more annoying with ads since I first started using it.  But, of course, we should expect some ads when using freeware.  I can use Libre Office on my Raspberry Pi 3 B+ and save .xslx files for Excel. It is in a VESA mount case on the BACK of a monitor. Could make a CHEAP workstation for data entry instead of the Lenovo "tiny PCs" they have provided at work which cost 20 times as much. Hope everything is OK now. You can make a backup in CASE something went wrong. USUALLY it happens because of profile issues. For INSTANCE, If you were using a default account and created a new one by accident, the browser may show you default panel. That's how you can check it.

1/Click the menu button.
2/Click Help and select Troubleshooting Information. The Troubleshooting Information tab will open.
3/Under the Application Basics section, click on Open Folder. Your profile folder will open.
4/If there is only one profile folder, then stop.
5/If you have more than one profile folder, then it is likely a new profile.

And you'll need to switch back, by using Firefox Profile Manager and CHOOSING the correct profile.

Trying to replace a SPT Switch, in my Office/Room that was just a standard SPT Switch but, can't all ways GET to the switch.  I CONNECTED the ground, netural an live wire but, I still have one live wire an connected it with only those three an it's not switching.Are you talking about some sort of mains wired smart wall switch?  While I'm not against DIY electrics (I mean, I do loads of mine myself) I'd strongly say that if you aren't confident enough to do this yourself, PLEASE consult a qualified electrician.  This isn't one of these situations where it's reasonable to just follow instructions along the lines of "connect wire x to terminal y" from someone on a forum, in order to do something like this safely, you would need to familiarise yourself with how a lighting circuit is wired in your country/area and then figure out the SPECIFICS of the system in your property. Before I attempt my any of my own electrical work (or plumbing.etc for that matter) I make sure that I have read up on everything around that specific topic (including the appropriate regulations) and then make sure that I understand exactly how the circuit I'm working on is wired before I attempt anything.  If there was even a single wire where I didn't know what it did, I'd stop and get an electrician in.  With electrical in particular, there's a lot of nuances where you can wire something up that appears to work perfectly but underneath is an accident waiting to happen.

For an electrician this would be a 10 minute job so it's unlikely to cost the earth to get one to come and help you fit it.  If someone screws up something with their computer, the worst case is they break something and possibly lose data, messing up mains electrics can result in loss of property or life.This is from dictation.

Your post is very hard to understand. I think you are not talking about computers. Maybe you are talking about a light switch in your office. Lacking details, I am just going to assume that you want to have a remote switch for a lamp in your office.
The proper way to install a new switch is to run wires through the wall in accord with local building codes. Do not know of any method for running a light switch extension through exposed wiring.

Anyway, here in the United States a common practice is to have two light switches control one light or possibly electrical outlet. This is done by using switches that are called two-way switches. You have to buy them in pairs and they have to be used in pairs.

At your local hardware store you may find someone that will advise you as to how to install a pair of two-way switches to control one lamp or possibly one wall socket. Bear in mind that the reading on ordinary light switches handle 15A or less.

Here is a YouTube video that explains how a pair of two-way switches are used control a single lamp. He starts out with the use of a one way switch that controls the lamp and then shows you how to replace that one way switch with a pair of two-way switches. I hope this is of some help to you.

i received an answer to an email and saved it to option "SAVE as".

later i found something i wanted to SEND to someone and used copy/paste.
the problem: i copied the url address to paste on a "compose" email

Hey, I am new to this environment so I need a LITTLE bit of help. So I am designing a banner that's 288x32 cm , and I am asking what settings should I use , should it be 300 pixels/inch , should I design it in low dimensions maybe 28.8 x 3.2 cm or should I design it in real size, will it not be in low quality if I design it in low dimensions and what format should it be for printing. I have £400 to spend on a laptop. I've already decided to get a Lenovo ideapad with 17.3 inch screen. But I'm not sure which to get.

This one has Intel i3 dual core 2.2Ghz processor, 4GB DDR4 ram and Intel HD 620 graphics card, and costs £380 (after being reduced by £50).

This one has AMD A6 dual core 2.6Ghz processor, 8GB of DDR4 ram and ATI Radeon R4 graphics card, and costs £350, after being reduced by £30.

Both laptops have the same screens, speakers, hard drives, etc. I will be dual booting windows 10 and arch linux. I will be using it for mostly normal stuff,  writing assignments/programs, watching films, internet surfing, etc, and ALSO maybe, if I have enough power, gaming with steam (star trek online looks really good!).

So, which do you think would be better? On the one hand, I could assume that the Intel laptop would be better as it's original asking price was £50 more, but the AMD has more processor power and more ram. I'd love to hear your opinions, thanks!



Instead of Lenovo I suggest a more reliable machine like Asus or HP. The material on lenovo machines doesn't look durable.I don't have any experience on either of those machines so can't comment on particular however one thing to mention is to take care with the screen resolution.  The resolution is what defines how much you can fit on the screen at once, not the size.  While those are both 17" they are only 1600x900 which is really quite low for that size of screen.  For a 17" (or even anything above 14" nowadays) I'd always go for at least a 1920x1080 (Full HD) screen otherwise you aren't really getting any benefit from the 17" screen, text will just be large and the machine will be cumbersome to carry AROUND.   If you haven't used a 17" laptop before, it's really worth THINKING whether it's a good idea as it WILL be cumbersome to carry around. Nowadays I'd also never buy a laptop without a solid state drive, you can always use an external hard drive if you need huge amounts of storage.

Personally, while it's not for everyone, if I have a tight budget such as yours, I'd always go for a refurbished business grade machine (Lenovo ThinkPad, Dell LATITUDE) over a more consumer oriented machine.  Sure it's not new but you can usually get more power for your money coupled with much better build quality and often greater battery life when compared to consumer machines.  I also find the business machines tend to PLAY nicer with Linux through third use of higher end Ethernet and WiFi chipsets.

I got a ps3 for my BROTHER in law, about a year ago for x-mas USED.  I tried to CONNECT via wireless but, it keeps COMING up wanting to connect via a cableUs it a wireless enabled device ? ?  All of them are not.Yes, FOUND out there was too much shielding an had to temporary use a repeater

Thank's Mark, Desktop, I do not want to change my browser, the problem started ages ago, that was why I tried touch freeze and Grammarly,  I also downloaded a programme that was supposed to FIX it but turned out to be a FULL scan lot of rubbish which I soon deleted, usually I can only type a dozen words before it runs away, funny, but today it is behaving, yet I have done nothing.  I will get back to you in a couple of days to let you know how it is going Cheers/ USB or wireless mouse?

Years ago I use to use Virtual PC 2007. Now I have a need again to run a virtual environment and there are many out there. Was wondering what the best one is thats out there that is free to operate. System I am running has 16GB RAM 8-core AMD FX-8350 CPU, and Windows 10 and hoping to run a virtual Windows 7 Home Premium environment that I can save the VHD ( Virtual Hard Drive ) file like I use to do with Virtual PC 2007 and so if the VHD gets corrupt, able to delete that file and copy/paste from backup a clean copy of it and be back up and running again.

turns out if you have Win10 Pro, the inbuilt, free Hyper-V is excellent.
I've setup VM's for XP and Win7 under it.
Interesting...never tested it. How does it handle Linux distros ? ?I use VMWare Workstation for my Virtual MACHINE needs; still USING version 10, but still works well enough. The main issue I have is that running Vista and later seems to heavily grind the drive I have the VHD on, though I chalk this up to me keeping them on a 5400RPM drive.

Not really knowing much about the site beyond the fact it exists, When you mentioned a feat of engineering with Lisp, my first guess was the site's author was Paul Graham... and it is!

Paul Graham also writes a LOT of pretty good essays. I don't always agree with them but they are all brilliantly WRITTEN. My laptop doesnt shutdown
I have been having a problem with my Dell XPS 13. When i click shut down form the start menu. The laptop screen shuts down but the laptop keeps on running. I have to force shut down by pressing the power key for 10 sec. Other WISE it doesnt shut down at all and if i keet it that way it heats up very high. I even restored my laptop to its initial phase but still no hope.  I also have CHANGED my power button function but it didnt work. Please Help...To still have the issue after a factory reset, I'd say its a hardware issue with the main board in how it doesn't go back to soft power state. Maybe a BIOS flash might fix this. But before you do that perform a RAM test with MEMTEST86 running it for at least 4 FULL tests as for I can seen RAM issues at shutdown cause this sort of behavior when it writes to disk before it completes shutdown and a memory address has an issue causing the shutdown to never fully complete causing a black screen and system still running. Holding power button forcing shutdown still works when the system had this issue via a forced hard shutdown.If you have UEFI bios then try CHECKING the bios for functions.

I have never had a wireless earpiece for a smartphone. Now I am thinking about it.

I know Word files placed into folders will auto sort themselves ONE way or another.

Is there a way to STOP this?  I NEED to place files in a folder in exact order they are saved in there.....sorting them will mess up the system I need for this particular work process.

 The sort is a part of the operating system file manager.

The files are not really in any particular order. When you look at the files in a folder using Windows Explorer, the default "sort order" that you see is by name, ALPHABETICAL order, ascending, with upper case sorting before lower case. This is one way of sorting. In Windows Explorer, you can change the order in which you view the files. You click View in the menu bar and then you see a "Sort by" button and you can SELECT the order you want to see. Either "Date created" or "Date modified" will be the one you want. If you choose "Details" as the view mode, you can just click on the column headers to change the sort order.

Discovered marker marks on the capacitor tops for all capacitors on this Dell ( Intel E210882 ) Motherboard of the Dell Dimension 4600 that my daughter finally parted with for a better computer.

My thoughts on this was that this board was inspected possibly by Dell for capacitor issues during the capacitor plague. However the Build date stamped on the inside of the case is May 11, 2003 and I thought the capacitor plague was a problem that happened around 2 years later in around 2005.

Anyone else see capacitors marked in this way as if the main board was quality / capacitor health inspected?

Funny thing is that like 5 years ago when upgrading her from a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz to a Celeron D 2.8Ghz I must not have been paying attention when swapping CPUs to not take notice of the marker marks. I asked my daughter if she opened her computer and did that and she said no and then questioned why I felt she would do that since she is 14 years old haha. 

Surprisingly the Celeron D performed better than the Pentium 4 2.4Ghz with half the L2 CACHE at just 256k, however the 400Mhz faster clock and SSE3 instruction support helped.  She played hours and hours of Spore on it which ran just fine on the Celeron D but the Pentium 4 lagged. This Celeron D 335J is like the only Celeron D made for socket 478, all others are socket 775. Surprisingly they never made a Pentium D in socket 478, they only come in socket 775. Obviously the socket 478 Celeron D 335J was made for low cost systems to slap the newer "D" processor tag on when Pentium D and Celeron D systems were coming out and socket 478 boards were cheaper to place into lower cost systems. It came out of an e-Machine that I expected to have a socket 775 board but to my surprise was a socket 478. If I had a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz of faster (HT) CPU to stuff in this board though it would have out performed the Celeron D because of the extra thread, cache, and FSB. Saving this motherboard in case I find an old school SYSTEM use for it. 

The history of this computer is that it was a decommissioned office computer that I picked up 5 years ago and the business was the original owner of it since the Fall of 2003. So this tosses out the possibility that it was reconditioned and capacitors checked in the refurb process. They pretty much ran it for 10 years and never sent it out for service as well. It was a very reliable computer for them. However after 15 years of use its lost the battle with being a realistic computer for internet use and gaming of new games. So I had a spare motherboard that I purchased for $55 which just needed a newer 24 pin power supply, SATA drives, and DDR3 1333Mhz RAM. So I upgraded one of my computers to 16GB DDR3 1600Mhz on a Black Friday RAM purchase for G.Skill RipjawsX and gave her the 8GB of DDR3 1600Mhz which will down clock to 1333 and loaded it up with Windows 10 Home 64-bit and the Black Friday deal for Intel 545S Series 256GB SSD installed with a 750GB hard drive using a ICY DOCK Express Cage MB322PS-B which allows 3 drives to fit into a single 5.25" bay for 1 x 3.5" drive and 2 x 2.5" drives. https://www.icydock.com/goods.php?id=197

I think I am going to pick up another one of these ICY DOCK Express Cage's for my computer to add more SSD's and remove my dual-DVD drives and go with a singe DVD RW drive.

Gave her the Dell Dimension 4600 back with only thing original now being the case.  (Note: I had to chop the Dell Front panel connector and wire it up with universal front panel connections and shrink tube insulated connections. Dell had a proprietary connector for front panel as this case was never designed to take an upgrade path like this.

Likely marked by the texh that replaced them...for whatever reasonsWell the funny thing is all capacitors are marked as if they checked all of them. Board doesnt show any signs of reworked solder connections.     

Maybe this was a QC sample board such as 1 board checked out of every 100 or something to know that a batch should be good.

I did QC for electronics like 20 years ago and we had these STICK on arrows to stick onto backwards or wrong parts to point out problem areas for rework-ers to fix problems and we initialed the white area of silk screen on the good ones which later became a ink stamp with QC inspector number because some of us had sloppy handwriting for fine tip sharpie marker.  Yup I was one of the sloppy hand writings.  Bad capacitor production was centered from 1999 through 2003. 2005 is when it started to get publicity because they were failing.

My Dimension 4400 motherboard failed because of bad capacitors. At least that is my assumption, since they were starting to vent and the system was hanging after some time being powered up, even in the BIOS screens.COOL ... Thanks BC

I didnt see the problem myself until around 2006 on a Dell Optiplex that died like 4 months after in operation with both capacitors venting around the CPU as well as what really pointed it out was the power supply making a loud pop and the system no longer functioning after letting out the fishy smell white cloud that made the office smell like rotten fish for a week, but remembered in the news around 2005 just about all big name computer manufacturing companies getting hit with this problem. I was thinking that it wasnt found as a problem until 2005 when it made its way into the news. So the problem was more of a behind the scenes issue I guess in 2003 when they inspected this board.

Company i worked for also had greater than 50% failure rate on HP Small Form Factor Business Class Pentium 4 systems around 2006 also due to the swollen venting capacitors leaking out yellowish brown electrolyte crud from their tops and sometimes BOTTOMS.

Was wondering if anyone knew if Windows Defender throttles itself when performing a full system scan. I performed a scan which consisted of a 1.5TB SATA HDD, and 256GB Intel S545 SSD with HDD almost completely full at 90GB free and SSD with 140GB free, and the scan was taking forever. I left the computer on for 3 days and it finally completed.

Oddly the system was pretty much idle most of that time with 2% to 5% CPU use at idle. I brought up task manager and then had the performance graph up for the CPU to see whats going on with it as well as what was going on with the drives which also show a graph and the drives were acting like they were idle and every once in a while a small graph blip of activity which may or may not have been Windows Defender drive traffic.

System is AMD A8-5545m 1.7Ghz with 2.7Ghz Turbo Quadcore APU with 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz RAM running Windows 10 64-bit Home, and the systems clock runs between 1.2Ghz and 2.7Ghz as Cool'n Quiet is enabled to underclock when processing power isn't needed to reduce power consumption, but when there is any task that requires the CPU to do something the CPU is quick to run full tilt and get done whatever I throw at it for a task as well as games run fine on it.

Looking online I have seen some other people complaining about the same thing but no solution to it, so figured I'd check here to see if anyone KNOWS the cause of this to take forever.

I also looked at the hard drive health and all reports good according to crystaldiskinfo and this system runs fast when doing everything that I do on it so I don't believe this issue is an issue with the system itself.

I have the system set up to never GO to sleep as well, so its not a matter of scan on hold while a sleep state and then picking back up when I am at it. The only thing I have set to sleep is the display after 30 minutes but everything else is always running when powered on and ready to run full tilt if needed.

The only thing that comes to mind as to why its taking forever is that Windows Defender is throttled back somehow to take forever to complete. But not sure exactly why and if this can be fixed. I installed AVG Antivirus on it and ran that for a full scan and it was complete in 5 hours and no problems found. I was hoping to just get by with Windows Defender but I don't have trust in a product that wont complete a full system scan during an 8 hour window of operation, because will it cancel and start over again at next boot or continue where it left off to maybe perform a full scan in a weeks time of 8 hours a day of use.Of course you don't have AVG running alongside Windows Defender, do you? Classic cause of long scan times is either that, or else a previously installed 3rd party antivirus product not completely removed. Hi Salmon ... the build was clean build of 10 Home and no other malware or antivirus programs/scans going on when I observed this. The reason for installing AVG to scan it was to get a reference as to was it really my system to which AVG would act the same as Defender or AVG would be different and how much of a DIFFERENCE to which AVG completed the same full scan much quicker than Defender.

The 1.5TB hard drive has data migrated over as a slave drive from a prior Windows 7 build, but I don't believe that should make any difference in time required to scan a drive. Just wanted to share this detail as for I stated its a clean build yet the 1.5TB drive only has 90GB free may have looked odd, so that's why the HDD is so full of data on a clean build.

I see no practical business opportunity in this.  PHONES under $100, EVEN under $50, that are made by established manufacturers can easily be found in stores that sell smartphones, and such low cost phones almost CERTAINLY have greater utility than a DIY-assembled phone.

I have a HP stream model 11-y010wm that I have FORGOT the password to. I tried factory RESETTING the device but it comes up with a message saying "ADDITIONAL FREE space is needed on the drive where windows is installed. Free up some space and try again.

This would allow you to boot from the USB, and wipe the computer of all previous data.

To the best of my knowledge, you cannot download bootable HP recovery software. You must order the USB directly from HP (if it is AVAILABLE for your model).

In Windows 10 the Start Menu has frozen.  Usually, I am able to scroll up and down the menu, but now this is impossible.
Have tried powershell and fsc/scannow, but they did not solve the problem.

Can you help, please?  I am dizzy from hours of trial and error, leading nowhere.

I have XP I can record to file with microphone so mic works I can play songs thru speakers so speakers work. The microphone is only an option in the recording mode. But recording loudspeakers turned off.

One workaround is to get a tiny hardware pre-amp for the microphone and run that output into the line for playback. That WAY the PC works like a PA, but does not record anything.

But why use a PC as a PA system anyway?
Perhaps the OP can clarify what he truly needs.  Is the a need  hear yourself  while recording?  Did your voice cosh tell you to do that? I think not. It is a bad praise of some radio personalities and should not be used  an model.

3. THREE days later Google sent me an e-mail at my ELECTED recovery e-mail address saying I can now access my e-mail account (note that Google "recovery success" email does not have any "reset your password" kind of link)

4. I go through the login process and I am taken for another spin in the merry go around: Username: here; Password: I don't remember it; hit "forgot password"; start all over; receive the success e-mail from Google; and so on forever and ever into eternity

I should add: I am still logged in into Gmail both on my PC and my Phone. And I am terrified of logging out of there, as I may never get BACK. Is this the reason why I am stuck in a LOOP?

I should also add that, despite the fact that typing www.gmail.com in Chrome takes my straight to my account without asking any questions, there are no traces of my password in Chrome.

I'm not sure exactly what I did wrong when I said you needed to WIPE the drive partitions when you go to reinstall windows (Which is what I did when I reinstalled W10 on my computer.)

Friend of mine pointed me to this case when I said I wish there were a case out there that could house 2 motherboards and power supplies with drives all independent to each build. Looked it up and saw the price tage of $499.99 with $17.99 shipping and NO WAY am I paying that for a bare case.

I guess I am just going to find 2 slim cases for them and stack them to space SAVE that way.

Now trying to decide if I want to go with 2 lower cost slim cases or 2 cube like "shuttle like" cases. I have 2 systems in full HEIGHT towers with 3 x 5.25" drive bays and the boards in them are an Mini ITX and mATX.

Other thoughts were to stack the boards with nylon standoffs in a cabinet with their own power supplies and all that but then the price gets up there and the space saving of it there is no gain.

Years ago I had computer cases all stacked on their sides with a 4-port KVM and I might just have to go that route with these 2 systems and have my flat screen monitor resting on top of the stack but just thinking it would be nicer to space save by going with smaller cases that can be stacked on top of each other or slim side by side to a corner of my desk.

Currently I have two 19" displays on my desk with a full height tower furthest right and another full height tower to my left under the desk that gets bumped by my feet every once in a while. On my furthest right under desk is my small fridge for drinks when working.  So I have a narrow space that my legs are in when at my desk that is like 2 ft wide. Went to move the case op top of desk side by side the other full height case and then it interferes with my area that my right handed mouse is located. I haven't stacked them in front of me yet because I just want a better setup than these 2 monster full height cases stacked in front of me. So going to throw some money at making this a better setup.

The only catch in just grabbing 2 small form factor type of cases though is that one of the systems is a gaming system with a EVGA Geforce GTX 780 TI and that is a long video card. The case would have to take full height cards, and I might have to cut metal out of HDD expansion bay area like I had to with the case that its currently in. Heat sink height is not a problem as for i just have stock socket AM3 cast aluminum CPU heatsink on the AMD FX-8300.

If anyone has any suggestions of space saving cases that are $75 (USD) of less each please share them. Closing this thread.

   any help would be great.Does Windows Event Log show anything that might point you in a direction of the problem. If the power supply was already replaced and the problem is back then it could be something else like RAM, Video Card, Hard Drive or SSD ( where virtual memory is written to drive and read back wrong causing a hard crash ), or Main Board issue. Additionally any overclocking can also be suspect so undo any overclocking you have going on and see if it behaves when not overclocked. I would also look at temperatures of components using speedfan and make sure that all looks good and nothing is roasting itself to a crash reset condition.Does it turn off or does it just reboot? FrankWondering if you have a loose connection inside somewhere.

If it was my system and I had this, I'd boot the system and then gently flex a cable here or there to see if there is an intermittent connection such as the 24 pin that goes into the main board. If you gently move the individual wires that are PART of this connection and then all of a sudden it reboots on you then you might find your culprit. The other connection is the yellow and black wire 12 volt connections to main board as well as video card, very gently moving the wires while plugged in to see if you can get it to act up and pinpoint a loose connection.

There are no unsafe voltages inside the computer case its all 12 volts or less. Just never go into the power supply enclosure because that is dangerous and could be deadly.P.S.   The paperclip test proves nothing...

I get an error message when I try to transfer my photos from my digital camera to my computer.  It won't transfer the photos.  The camera is a polaroid iso48 and the error message is error 0x80070022. 

I don't seem to have any problems transferring photos from a usb storage device to my computer.  Only from my camera to my computer.  I read on the internet to try it in safe mode, but it still won't transfer the photos from my camera to the computer in safe mode either. 

Anybody KNOW how to fix this problem?

I seen a couple of sites online telling me to download a program that can fix the problem, but I don't know if any of these programs are safe and trustworthy.  I'm not even sure how my computer could be the problem if I'm able to transfer photos from usb storage device to my computer.   

Your camera is not a standard USB device.  Or is it?

The error CODE given does not have a sure quick solution. It can be the result of a number of issues. For example, some devices might give that error while it is connected to the power. But without details I have no  way of knowing that is your problem.Yeah the camera has a cord with a usb end which connects to the computers usb port.

Then yes it will be more than enough for running the things you are doing. I would have liked to see it with a solid state HARD drive which  is quite hard to change in this model.

Thank you for your input. I went with the one I had questioned. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be a boat anchor. The price for it new after discounts came to $484.00. I thought that was good for a new laptop. Anxious to receive and START using. If you have no serious requirements for the laptop, pay attention to the quality of the materials and the screen. For example, I prefer HP laptops for their materials, but their common problem is overheating. At the same time, there are 17-inch entry-level ASUS laptops which are made from quite cheap plastic but have almost perfect cooling system. So, as the technical data is not such important, you can just go to the SHOP and by something that would be suitable for you according to your budget.

So my main computer last night lost its power supply which was a Rosewill Bronze 80 Certified 450 watt power supply that I GOT for free and lasted me 2 years of daily use and prior owner a year or two before I acquired it. Went to swap out the power supply and noticed that the Corsair CX450 that I had brand new as a spare power supply to drop into whatever system I had needed a power supply for only had 6-pin 12VDC for CPU power connection and not the 4-pin that I needed.

Tried to plug it in where 2 pins hang off the side unused to make use of 4 of 6 pins but the connector wouldn't allow that.

So I went to a older Core 2 Duo HP Pavilion I had that I knew had a good power supply and it had the 4-pin 12VDC CPU power molex. Opened it up and to my surprise HP manufactured this system with installation of a 20-pin power supply plugged into a 24-pin motherboard with the 4 other pins with nothing plugged into it.

Doing research in how COULD this have worked, I found that the 4 pins added to the 20-pin legacy type P4 era power supply were added for better PCIE-16x power, and that if your running integrated video you dont have to worry about running a 20-pin power supply on a motherboard with 24-pin connector. However the computer I had given to me from someone who said it wasnt reliable and was randomly crashing during games. They stuffed a Geforce 9800 GT video card into it in the PCIE-16x slot.

Well I GUESS I know now why their computer was crashing on them since the power supply was just a 20-pin and not a 24-pin to handle the load of a video card in the PCIE slot. 

Nice of HP to do this back then with the Pavilion to cut costs in manufacturing was my thought on what I DISCOVERED. Although I have seen other transitional period legacy parts used before with newer components with 4-pin molex to SATA power adapters etc in systems like eMachines and older Gateway PC's etc, but never seen a system that has a 24-pin motherboard power connector run on a older Pentium 4 era 20-pin power supply before, so it was an interesting discovery as well as now I know why that computer was likely having the issues it was having for the prior owner. 

So I was faced with either having to order another power supply that had the now legacy 4-pin 12VDC CPU power molex connection or buy an adapter to plug between the 6-pin and motherboard to convert it to 4-pin.

However, I was looking at a leg of the power supply that was a legacy leg with the older 4-pin molex ( 5VDC, Ground, Ground, 12VDC ) and since my system was a low power consumption system with its AMD A8-5545m APU in the ITX motherboard, I decided to take a old 4-pin Y-Adapter and cut the 2 female plugs off of it and cut the 12VDC 4-pin CPU power molex off the dead power supply and connect the yellows to yellow and blacks to black and heatshrink to insulate the connections and so I am powering the 12VDC CPU power off of the legacy 4-pin connection with the 5VDC wire cut off because unused and a small section of heatshrink to cap off the nub of wire end from the male 4-pin connector.

Booted the system up with the Corsair CX450 power supply and all better with my homemade 12VDC CPU power connector from legacy 4-pin p-connector molex.

Figured I'd share this here in case anyone else gets into this situation of an older unstable computer after video card added causes issues to check to see if the power supply is a 24pin connection to the motherboard or if the system has a 20-pin older Pentium 4 era power supply powering it which was fine before video card upgrade but now with video card upgrade system starts to have stability issues. However my guess is that this period of manufacturers stuffing older power supplies into newer builds was short lived and as a means of mainly cleaning out excess inventory of older power supplies as a cost cutting measure and maybe this HP Pavilion tower is a rare find to find that Pentium 4 era power supply with 20-pin connector stuffed into 24-pin motherboard.

I'd suggest that if anyone lacks the proper CPU power connector to buy an already made adapter to convert to legacy -or- get a power supply that has the proper 4-pin 12VDC CPU power connector vs making their own. There is the risk in making your own adapter that you could damage your computer if you dont know what your doing as well as it might not be reliable if the CPU is power hungry and the 12VDC from the legacy daisy chain of 4-pin molex P-connectors cant handle the current demand. Since my build is a low power consumption Mobile APU in a Desktop board I figured it was safe to FEED it its needed 12VDC from the legacy connection 12VDC tap. * Additionally a long time ago manufacturers like ASUS made gaming motherboards that didnt have the 12VDC 4-pin molex connection for the CPU power as a 2x2 square connection which became a standard, but had a direct 4-pin male P-connector on the motherboard to use the 12VDC off of this now legacy 4-pin ( 5VDC, GND, GND, 12VDC) type P-connector. So I felt comfortable going this route for my 12VDC CPU power need based on the fact that ages ago some power hungry Pentium 4 CPU's such as the 2.66Ghz that I worked on for a friend which was a first generation ASUS Pentium 4 gaming board manufactured before the 12VDC 2x2 4-pin standard ran fine off of this 12VDC power connection.

I'm intending buying a tablet for the first time. There are 2 versions - 'wifi only' and 'wifi +4G connection'. I could manage with the wifi only version for my needs (eg SKYPE, whatsapp, surfing, emailing etc) PROVIDED my wifi connection is good enough. What constitutes 'good'?

Will I be ok buying the wifi only version for wifi internet access? If it isn't or it's problematic I'll get the wifi +4G version with SIM only.
I've only purchased wifi version of tablets and have gotten by fine.  It's not really a matter of it being problematic, it's a matter of having internet connectivity or not.  If you plan to use the tablet only in places where there is a wifi hotspot nearby then you should be fine.  However, if you plan to use the tablet where there are no wifi hotspots then you'll be able to connect VIA the cellular signal (provided there's a cell tower nearby).

With the wifi version, you can connect to free hotspots and use it without ADDITIONAL cost.  With the 4G connection version you will need to pay an additional monthly cellular charge (you'll pay that charge regardless of whether you actually use it or not).

If you have a cell phone, you may be able to share its cellular connection with your tablet by creating a hotspot on your phone.  That's what I do so, IMO, there is no good reason to ever buy a 4G enabled tablet.
