Why single-phase motors are not self-starting?

Answer»

When a 1φ supply is given to the single winding of the single phase motor, the field produced by it changes in magnitude and direction sinusoidally (pulsating flux).

Such and alternating field is equivalent to two fields of equal magnitude and speed rotating in opposite direction. Such rotating magnetic fields produces two torque’s on the rotor. So the rotor can not rotate in any direction. Because the net torque developed by the motor is equal to zero. So a single-phase motor is not self-starting.

Define single phase AC motor with its types.

Answer»

Single phase induction motor

Single phase induction motor runs with single phase supply. The efficiency of the single phase induction motor is less than that of the three phase induction motor. Single phase induction motor are extensively used for domestic application like fans, coolers, geysers, mixies, washing machines etc. The rating of single phase induction motor is less than 1 KW or we can say that the single phase moter has fractional horsepower rating.

The single phase induction motor looks like a three phase induction motor. It is constructionally same as three phase induction motor except that the starter has a single phase winding instead of 3 phase winding.

Types of single phase induction motor

(1) Split phase motor

(2) Capacitor start motor

(3) Shaded pole motor

(4) Capacitor start capacitor run motor

(5) Permanent split capacitor motor

98561.

What is the necessity of DC motor starter?

Answer»

Eb = V – Ia ra.

∴ Ia = V – Eb / ra.

At the time of starting from the rest there is no any back emf (Eb) in the armature. So a large current flows through the armature based on V / ra. This very large current blow out the fuses and before to that it will damage the commutator, commutator brushes and winding. To avoid this difficulties a proper resistance has to be introduce in series with the armature till the motor reaches it’s rated speed or till development of Eb in the armature to reduce the starting large current to safe value. This starting resistance is gradually cut out as the motor gains speed and the develops back emf (Eb) which regulates it’s speed and armature current. This can be achieved by the help of starter.

Take a look at the confusion matrix:The Confusion MatrixRealityPredictionYesYesNoTrue Positive (TP)False Positive (FP)NoFalse Negative (FN)True Negative (TN)How do you calculate F1 score?

Answer»

We begin the calculation by first using the formula to calculate Precision Precision is defined as the percentage of true positive cases versus all the cases where the prediction is true. That is, it takes into account the True Positives and False Positives.

Precision = \(\cfrac{ \,}{\, \,}\) x 100%

Precision = \(\cfrac{TP}{TP+FP}\) x 100%

Next, we calculate recall as the fraction of positive cases that are correctly identified.

Recall = \(\cfrac{ \,}{ \,+\, }\)

Recall = \(\cfrac{TP}{TP+FN}\)

Finally, we calculate the F1 score as the measure of balance between precision and recall.

F1 score = 2 × \(\cfrac{ \times }{ +}\)

 What is slip?

Answer»

The difference in speed of stator magnetic speed ‘Ns’ (synchronous speed) and rotor speed ‘Nr’ is called slip or absolute slip and it is denoted by the letter ‘S’.

∴ S = Ns – Nr / Ns.

Slip has no unit. Percentage of slip of induction motor varies from 4 to 5% in small motors and 1.5 to 2.5% in big motors.

In other words slip ‘S’ = fr / f. Where fr is rotor frequency and f is stator frequency.

What is the working principle of double squirrel cage induction motor?

Answer»

In double squirrel cage motor outer cage rotor winding is of high resistance and low reactance. Inner cage winding is of high reactance and low resistance.

At the time of starting rotor frequency is equal to the stator frequency and there by the reactance of the inner cage winding is comparatively high (XL = 2πfL) because it is linking more inner winding than the outer winding. So the impedance of inner cage winding is very high. Hence the current flow through inner cage winding is very less comparing to the outer cage winding. That is a very high ratio of current is passing through the outer cage winding at the time of starting and there by produces very high starting torque.

When the rotor starts running the speed of the motor can be increased and the slip will be decreased and there by the rotor frequency (‘S’ = fr / f). So that in the running condition the reactance of the inner cage decreases to the lowest value and hence the Impedance (XL = 2πfL). So the current in inner cage winding will be comparatively more than the outer cage winding at the time of running. So now inner cage winding produces more torque than outer cage at the time of running and the motor running torque is good enough.

98570.

What is the working principle of 3φ induction motor?

Answer»

When 3φ supply is given to stator, a rotating magnetic field of constant magnitude is produced. This rotating magnetic field produces induced emf in the rotor winding as per faraday’s laws and this induced emf causes to circulate a heavy induced current in the rotor winding due to very small resistance of rotor. At the initial moment the frequency of induced emf is equal to the frequency of the stator supply voltage, when the rotor is stationary as in the case of secondary of a transformer. The rotor induced current according to lenz’s law flows in such a direction that it opposes the cause, which is inducing it. In this case the cause producing the rotor current is the relative speed between the rotating magnetic field if stator and the rotor and is maximum when the rotor is stationary. Hence to reduce this relative speed rotor conductor (rotor) starts to rotate in the same direction in which the stator field is rotating and tries to catch it up. The rotation of this rotor is developed due tog the torque developed in the rotor by interaction between the rotating magnetic field of stator and the field produced by the rotor current.

Explain construction and working principle of immersion heater. Also explain its defects and steps to repair.

Answer»

Immersion heaters are used to quickly and reliably heat liquids that they are immersed in either from the top of an open vessel, or through the side of the vessel into the liquid with a liquid and pressure tight fitting. Immersion heaters are available in many physical configurations, materials and temperature ranges to cover a wide range of applications in industry, science, utilities, domestic and appliances. While most immersion heaters are relatively inexpensive to purchase, they are not particularly energy efficient since they employ a direct electric heating.

Principle of Operation: Immersion heaters are made by encasing a nichrome resistance heating wire in a ceramic jacket which is then surrounded by an Inconel sheath. Inconel is a highly corrosion- and heat resistant form of stainless steel used for the electric heating elements on electric stoves. As electricity flows through the nichrome wire, it gets hot to the point of glowing and spews heat at a high rate through the ceramic and through the Inconel, until its temperature is high. If it were not immersed, it would glow red just like stove heating elements.

Common Problems of Immersion heater and remedies:

If the water is not heating up efficiently or not heating up at all, then it could be a sign of a faulty thermostat or element. This will need to be tested by a proficient plumber or electrician. If the water is heating up to an extreme, the thermostat may be stuck on the ‘on’ position and will need replacing. Another common problem can be the timer switch burning out, which would also require replacement.

The procedure by which amniotic fluid is obtained for testing is 1. Chorionic villus sampling2. Amniocentesis3. Fetal blood sampling4. None of these

Answer» Correct Answer - Option 2 : Amniocentesis

Explanation:

Amniocentesis

  • Amniocentesis is a procedure in which amniotic fluid is removed from the uterus for testing or treatment.
  • Amniotic fluid is the fluid that surrounds and protects a baby during pregnancy. This fluid contains fetal cells and various proteins.
  • Although amniocentesis can provide valuable information about your baby's health, it's important to understand the risks of amniocentesis — and be prepared for the results.

Amniocentesis can be done for various reasons:

  • Genetic testing. Genetic amniocentesis involves taking a sample of amniotic fluid and testing it for certain conditions, such as Down syndrome.
  • Fetal lung testing. Fetal lung maturity testing involves taking a sample of amniotic fluid and testing it to determine whether a baby's lungs are mature enough for birth.
  • Diagnosis of fetal infection. Occasionally, amniocentesis is used to evaluate a baby for infection or other illness. The procedure can also be done to evaluate the severity of anaemia in babies who have Rh sensitization — an uncommon condition in which a mother's immune system produces antibodies against a specific protein on the surface of the baby's blood cells.
  • Treatment. If you accumulate too much amniotic fluid during pregnancy (polyhydramnios), amniocentesis might be done to drain excess amniotic fluid from your uterus.
  • Paternity testing. Amniocentesis can collect DNA from the fetus that can then be compared to DNA from the potential father.

What are the common defects in reflector type room heater? Write different steps to repair reflector type room heater?

Answer»

1. Poor flow of air: One of the most common heater problems is poor flow of air or insufficient heat. If this problem or the filter is not checked or left as it is, then this could lead to damaging of the limit switch.

2. Frequent cycling: Another one of the common heater problems includes frequent cycling. If your heater keeps turning on and then going off repeatedly without really heating your home up then this may indicate a problem. This could be because of a bigger underlying problem and is something that a professional may be able to help you with.

3. Bad thermostat: If you are facing problems with your thermostat and it doesn’t turn or change the heat mode, then it may have gone bad.

4. Grating noise coming from the heater: These days, most of the heater models available are silent and do not make any noise. Thus if you notice a certain sound or a grating noise coming from yours, then this could be an indication of a fault. A loud grinding noise means that some part of the heater has gone loose. This could also mean that the blower wheel is damaged.

5. Constant blowing: One of the common heater problems includes constant blowing. If your heater’s blower runs constantly without shutting off then this could be due to a bad limit switch. You must remember that the blower must never run continuously and should get breaks in between.
