how is ganesh chaturthi celebrated |
|
Answer» Ans :- In homes of Maharashtra, the families install small and colorful clay statues of Lord Ganesha to be worshipped during the festival. Flowers and durva or the young grass, karanji and modaks are offered during the morning and evening worshipping sessions. In Maharashtra, the Marathi aarti composed by the 17th century saint Samarth Ramdas "Sukhakarta Dukhaharta" is sung in honor of Lord Ganesha. The families decide when to end the celebration and that obviously varies. If Ganesha is worshipped at home, the festival may end after 1 and a half, 3, 5, 7, or 11 days depending on the wish of the host. In Maharashtra, one would also see Hartalika that is observed with a fast by the women of the fmailies on the day prior to Ganesh Chaturthi. Gauri festival also occurs here with installation of idols of Gauri which is the other name of Devi Durga. In Konkani culture of Goa, this Ganesh Chaturthi is known as Chavath or Parab or Parva. Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati is worshipped by the fasting womenfolk of the family. Ghumots, Pakhavaj or two headed drum, and crash cymbals are played all through the rituals. The very next day is kept for Navyachi Pancham when fresh paddy from new harvest is brought from the fields to continue the worship. During this festival people turn strictly vegetarian. Gowri festival precedes Ganesh Chaturthi in Karnataka while in Andhra Pradesh, Matti Vinayakudu ie. Clay statues of Lord Ganesha and Siddhi Vinayakudu ie. Turmeric statue of Lord Ganesha are worshipped at home with Plaster of Paris idols. Ganesh Chaturthi in public: Local groups of youth, association of people or clubs, or a group of businessmen or tradespeople organize Ganesh festival in a large way. Funds are collected from public or donations are given by rich people. The idols or statues of Lord Ganesha are then brought into mandaps or pandals and a series cultural programs are followed. Free medical check-up, blood donation camp, distribution of food, sweet, and clothing to the poor and needy also form a part of the festival if organized by clubs or groups. Just like the huge show of Dusshera in West Bengal, this Ganesh Chaturthi festival is something more than the religious significance. There is an economic angle to it also. In Mumbai, Pune, Surat, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru, many artists, industrialists, and businessmen find a profitable way of income for this festiva |

Answer» India of the past was a well sought after market for exotic goods such as spices, diamonds and colourful garments. From the beginning of the second millenium the land and sea route to India came to be dominated by Arabs and Turks, the middlemen in global trade in that part of the world. A direct sea route to India was discovered by the Portuguese towards the end of 1490s. To European states this opened up the possibility of bypassing Arabs and Turks to conduct trade with India, which was previously an isolated market. Following the trail of Portuguese, many influential and powerful European kingdoms sent their envoys and merchants to establish commercial treaties with Indian kings. This gave birth to chartered companies such as the British East India company and its counterparts that began building a string of factories in India and the East Indies, made treaties, entered into alliances, fought and subdued locals and competitors alike. Despite the initial headstart, Portuguese, the Dutch and the French eventually lost to the British who gradually became the overlords of the Indian subcontinent. TLDR: The discovery of a direct and unhindered route to a prosperous market and the lure of the glamour of the Orient. |

1. Non-profit organisations play an active role in providing a boost to thetraditional cottage industries. Do you agree? Why? |
|
Answer» Nonprofits play an important and increasing role in providing opportunities for physical activities through park development and recreation programs. Total expenditure and government contributions to the sector have both increased over the past two decades. However, the level of nonprofit activity is correlated with the distribution of public funds and local fiscal capacity, limiting their ability to address regional inequities. Wealthier cities, where needs tend to be lower, have a significantly more active nonprofit parks and recreation sector. In contrast, many of the poorest cities have no or few active nonprofit organizations that promote park development or recreational activities. Nonprofits involved in park or facilities development are more likely to engage in partnership with state and local governments and receive significant funding from the latter. In contrast, recreation program nonprofits have very limited relationships with governments, are primarily financed by memberships, fees, and private contributions, and serve specific populations. As such, they reflect current trends in municipal service privatization. Thus, while promising public-private partnerships have emerged in developing an active built environment, the operation and maintenance of these facilities remains problematic, with signs of increased privatization. To the extent that devolution to the nonprofit sector leads to privatization, the nonprofit sector is unlikely to be able to reduce existing disparities in access to parks and recreational opportunities. Conclusions:The nonprofit sector has become a key player in providing opportunities for active living and advocating for healthier environments. This development has been in part prompted by the devolution of state responsibility, which has increased the burden of local agencies. In some cases, this has resulted in opportunities for new partnerships between local governments and community actors. In other cases, however, this has lead to a privatization of public services. The latter is likely to reproduce or increase deprivation of recreational opportunities in low-income neighborhoods. Policy implications, in particular with regard to the allocation of public funds to nonprofits, are discussed. |
