I purchased a Norton Anti-Virus CD from an online software company.  I installed it but when I went to activate it I got a message that the PRODUCT key was a problem and a "A8keyabuse" message.  I called support services at Symantec and was told the product key was bad.  They subsequently sent me an e-mail requesting that I send the CD to them to investigate and that the product key had PREVIOUSLY been activated.
I didn't know what an OEM-CD was but have found information that it is only to be used with a new system and it says right on it that it is not for re-sale or retail sales.  If I get a replacement from the software company will I have the same problem?  Can I not USE an OEM-CD on my computer?  Don't know what to do.If you get a replacement, then you will be GETTING a brand NEW CD. It SOUNDS like you got ripped with that online company..... Send it in...

I have a Compaq Presario running Windows98, cable modem, McAfee VIRUS Scan, & all the rest is normal programs on pc's (nothing exotic).

I'll be on the internet, & if I LEAVE it running for more than a few minutes without doing any activity on the net (like if I'm writing a long email, & everything is just sitting), the computer loses it's internet connection, & I have to reboot the pc to get it working again.

This shouldn't be happening because I connect thru cable, which is always on.  I've contacted the cable company a couple TIMES & they've RUN tests to be sure the signal is getting thru to my modem (which it always is).  I contact Microsoft & explained the problem to them, they had no idea what causes the connection loss.

Anyone have a similar problem or know what I can try?it could be a nic card playing up....what irq is it on?? try a speed test to see if there is a net drop-out.....www.adslguide.co.uk......check that the cables are sound...... does the router contain a diagnostic fault log.....scan for trojans ETC......and final check the firewall logs..and see if it reports anything...

Hi, Please HELP!  I am trying to BURN a photo SLIDE show to play on the dvd player.  I TRIED a cd and the dvd will not play it it is looking for mp3 files, I tried to burn it to a dvd and the dvd it still will not play it says check dvd. What happens is i boot my CP up and it loads fine, i can mess around on windows etc but as soon as i start a game, generals ZH, battlefield 1942, OFP etc the computer will run fine for a bit then will complete STOP responding. The computer itself stays running i can SEE the LIGHTS on i can hear the fan and HDD but the monitor shuts off the laser mouse shuts off the sounds stops and the keyboard lights go out.
First of all i THOUGHT it might be the Motherboard becuase i was running a Abit Pro-Max3 Socket 754 and then i changed it for a Abit KV8 Pro.

Im still getting the EXACT same thing and its baffling me. can anyone help?try re-seating your graphics card? any beeping from it?also check your power options they should all be set  to ...never..

Isos? what do i do with an iso and what exactly is an iso? i have a game and when i first GOT it(downloaded) it was winrar so i extracted it and it came up with like about 34 winrar archives that are 14 mgb each and there is 4 other files R30-34 that are 14 mgb each and another R35 that is 5 mgb and a sfv file. In all of the 34 archives there is a .bin file and a .cue file and they vary in size in each but very little. I TRIED to put it on a cd but it didnt work. HELP!!!! PLEASEE!!!If you mean a program with an .iso extention, I believe it's an INSTALLER program... which might be useful. Try to open it. ISO files are images (duplicates) of complete CDROM disks containing exact binary copies of the original CDs. Usually, you have to burn an ISO file on a CD to extract its contents.
What you PROBABLY have to do is D/l  VCDGear and possibly MakeCue........
If there is a bin and cue file in each of the rar files .......try exrtracting the first RAR file ....I usually extract it to the file that I have D/L all the rars to . It will see that there are other files required and join them .

dl65  Be careful that when you transfer the files, that they aren't carrying that virus of yours. That will make your life a LOT harder if you erase one hard disk, and then infect the other. Careful......

[glb]Flame[/glb]Norton antiirus quarentined the virus but the temporary files are unrepairable, according to norton, so I am transferring all my stuff - I have MUSIC and doucument files I wanted to save and transfer, I dont know how to do this.  I bought disc (cd's) to save on, did I get the right thing or should I have bought floppy disk.  Please advise.Before you think of transferring, make sure that those files that you want to keep are not infected...

When opening a new window, a pane will open on the left size of the screen with desktop folders listed.  Very annoying.  Any ideas why this is happening.  Thanks

dl65 Windows XP- Home Edition- Version 2002click the my document folder then click the tools tab then click folder options   then click the restore defaults button........thanks Merlin_2, but this did not solve the problem.  It continues to open.options use system restore feature or re-boot hold down the f8 keep and chose the LAST good config...or do a repair of ie 6 CONTROL panel click add/remove tab then scroll down the list of programs then click ie6...and click remove...a splash screen will apppear chose the repair option...if it still does it after the suggestions...you may to do a REG repair?thanks for the help merlin_2.  the problem continues, so i must have a more serious problem.  malad........Do you not have the ability to close out the left hand pane ?

dl65  yes, i'm very good at closing it out, it just keeps coming back.Scan for Viruses, Spyware and Trojan HorsesHave you use any registry programs.......or edited the reg....if you scan for bugs always disable the system restore...i would disable it for good for what it does? that my opinon...(to disable it hold down the winkey on the keyboard the one with the windows picture one now hold down the plus key and pause break key at the same time).........so its winkey+ key pause/break key at the same time > this will display the splash screen for the device manager.......>click the system restore tab and untick the box....>windows may ask you to re-boot pc do so...now scan for the script distorters....WORMS etc.....Look in folder options. Maybe try resetting all folders to the default.

I just bought a new computer, I need to back -up a program from my old computer ( Personal Ancestral FILE) and  PUT it on to my new computer. My old computer only BACKS up to a floppy and my new computer does not have floppy. How do I do it?

All computers need a floppy drive.laptop........some dont have f/drives...have got a data link cable?//or an ide ADAPTER...or use dcc........

I added a scanner to my  computer that runs windows 98 and the SOFTWARE was to much for the computer. So when the system shut down to restart. it gives me a message that dll file is missing then it locks up. I cannot get past putting in my password. So I cannot log in to remove the scanner and REPAIR the system. How can I do it through dos?After you start your computer press F8 key many times; from the MENU that will appear choose Safe Mode and try from there. It will TAKE a little more to log on, but in 3-5 minutes you should be in Windows - Safe Mode.

After that, Start->Shutdown->Restart.

Other ideas: from dos, go to windows\temp directory and delete everything there (if you don't know what I am talking about forget that part).

I just got a used COMPUTER and so far it has been wonderful, exept for the fact that any music coming out of it sounds like it's by Alvin and the CHIPMUNKS. I think it's the computer's problem because i've tried to hook up other speakers but its all the same, i've also tried bringing the treble down and bringing the bass up but it didnt WORK either. I'm totally clueless....

When I get emails with embedded links to websites, I cannot get them to WORK anymore.  I click on the "Click Here" etc. icons and nothing happens.  Can you give me an idea what has HAPPENED.Some antivirus programs filter them out as "suspicious".  You shouldn't be clicking on EMAIL links, most are spyware.I do hear what you are saying, but some are my trusted sites I do business with and none of them work now.  I have to cut and paste the web address and if it is a "Click Here" icon, it won't work at all and I don't even have the web address.  I know, I can look it up.  I appreciate your thoughts.  I was just wondering what has happened in the last few WEEKS to make the change.  My husband thinks SpyBloc TOOK out this option to go to links.  Well, thanx!!!  Spybloc sounds dodgy.

WELL it's not as if they're GOING to spontaniously combust and DESTROY your drive now is it? It's perfectly fine: in FACT, I've had "Progressive History X" by Fluke sitting in mine for about a WEEK now.

When you download a music track to listen to, does it place the file on your computer.

I downloaded a track yesterday through quick TIME and PLAYED it back but COULD not find the file.

I use Mozilla as my browser and it has not appeared in the download section Nigel...Did you save your download ?

DL65 If you just clicked on a link and the music started then you probably have a temporary internet file on your computer.  If you specifically chose to save the file to your drive then it should be there somewhere, just use Search to find it.What program are you using to download this music? Did it come from a webpage or a program installed on your computer?

I did not save the file It loaded through quick time. I then hit play and it started playing so I guess its a temperory file. can i find this? If so so can i then save it permanatly.  I was told that this was POSSIBLE, just a case of finding the file

The file was down loaded from a web pageLook in your temporary internet folder.  If you clean your history and temp files like I do then it's as good as gone.  You might have better luck going back to the website and just save it from there.

Lets see if anyone can help me with this. I have PICKED up a full-search IE hijacker and dataminer called Wintaskad. Its located in Programfiles\Windowstaskad\Wintaskad.exe and has a Lavasoft TAC of 8. The file is hidden and can not be deleted. It springs BACK to life moments after a deletion of any kind. I have run Adaware, Spywareblaster, Spybot, Hijackthis and CWShredder with no luck. Several REMOVAL programs DETECT it but will not delete it. I know that someone out there can help. Thanks in advance.

recently I have noticed that my hourglass keeps showing up, this happens even if I am just at the desktop and have not opened anything, I have run several online scans as well as my norton, I have done several anti spyware scans as well as adaware which I have on my pc, I have searched and searched for an answer to this but can not seem to find an answer, I have noticed that when it happens my cpu goes up to about 22%, I have looked up the definitions for all the processes I have running and they all appear legit, any answers to this would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me crazy  THANKS in advance, I installed the sp2 service pack a couple weeks ago but I am pretty sure this problems has been happening since before that install.

I did as you said, I ran stinger, I have run it before but thought it would be a good idea to do it again anyway, I also stopped SSDP, twice actually, I just checked it again and oddly it is started once again, the problem with the curser is still there You should install a decent virus and spyware scanner rather than only using Stinger. i have just bought a new computer(amd2600) and INSTALLED win2000pro. When i start the computer i get a message"free dos" and it stops there. if the win 2000 disk is in the cd drive it starts up fine. Also if i press f11 on startup and choose the hard drive it starts up fine. i didnt put freedos on at all. Maybe it was put on at the store. As you can guess i dont have a wealth of computer knowledge.

There are no pictures or Images that show on my computer anymore. ...I used to use Nero, but it simply decided to stop working. (A lot of versions of Nero) and so did Alcahol 120%.  Software crashes when trying to access the burn menu or when scanning for drives.

Nero will crash if XP burning is not turned off.

First of all, please forgive my computer illiteracy. I have an older computer my children use, a Compaq with an AMD-K6 450 MHz processor. Originally it came with 64 Mb of SDram and is expandable to 384 Mb. Normally the bus speed of this RAM is PC100, yet last year I yanked out the 64Mb chip replacing it with a PC133 128Mb chip.  

What my actual question is; will my computer ALLOW me to run and ACCEPT up to the 384 Mb ram maximum on the PC133 bus? Or will there be glitches. With the single 128 Mb chip installed there have been no problems.

I know the Ns were critical back then so before I invest in another 256Mb just wanted to find out if I can use the PC133 bus.  Thank you so very much for and help and responses. HAPPY HOLIDAYS as well.  rglenlam.......Have you tried putting the 64mb pc100  stick in with the 128 mg of pc133 ........and see if 192 mg is seen.....?

If the mobo will support 384 of sd pc 133 go for it .....failing that why not use pc100 or pc 133 ram thats backwards compatible .

And scroll down the page ...next to the scanreg icon............found it......is an icon  called...setup...click this and it will restore you lappy but to when it was first swiched on.....can i asked you the reason for formating...there are viruses in the computer and my dad asked me to format. there are constant internet script errors, all my microsoft office doesn't work(actually most programs doesn't work), I can't go on MSN MESSENGER(big THING to me), constant pop-up of inappropriate websites when my IE doesn't even work. I have to unplug the internet connection to stop the pop-ups but that makes the computer useless.Teronix.....Why wouldnt you simply use  virus removal tools , clean out the viruses , then install and run on a regular basis a good anti - virus program ..........and some decent SPYWARE scanning apps would help as well.

by re-installing the system it will overwrite any virus.(.its no difference to formatting)...it stores an image on the hard drive and start again...click the setup icon...the biggest cause of viruses is MSN Messenger try triillian instead....and if you have to go the whole hog load the boot floppy at at the a:\ prompt type format c: so the command looks like this a:\format c: all files with be lose etc...then type the fdisk command after the prompt..and make your hard partitions....then a:\d:\setup.exe   but all the viruses live in the system  restore of all systems unless they are disabled...and norton and whoever dont scan for them in there...

I have a Panasonic LF-M721 Dual layer DVD burner and I was wondering if I need a SPECIAL DVD disc to be able to burn up to 9.4GB dual layer.
Could I just go out to the store and BUY a normal DVDR and burn on both sides?
If anyone knows please give me the exact NAME of the disc.
Also just out of curiosity could you burn dual layer on a normal CDR so it BECOMES 1400MB?

Is it wrong to store floppy disks on top of eachother?

I seem to have a lot floppies that either stop working, need to be formatted and have their contents REINSTALLED or simply don't function as they first did after storing them on top of eachother.If they are ALSO stored near your monitor or speakers, I'd suspect those of making the magnetic information degrade. Placing 9cm (3.5in) floppies in horizontal rows or vertical stacks is not going to HARM them on its own.They are not placed near any magnetic sources. Perhaps I have placed them next to one when working on a PC. Plez Helpme....There is a number of reasons your games will run on one pc and not another......Do both of the pcs use the same operating system.....for example if the game was designed for win 95 or 98 it probably wont run on a pc with Win xp ......or perhaps the firewall is preventing the game from running if its a online game .....

Windows XP SP 2 does not offer autorun anymore.

You say that some disks are read, but not all, do you run into more problems with this CD drive?No...the cd drive works fine and autorun still works on the games that it reads

The first problem could be caused due to the game not being compatible with certain software on your system..

Have you tested C&C:G on a different system to see if disks are faulty?On my other computer with the same o/s both games work... and im positive my comp is compatible cuz i was able to play the first game b4 but i think it was after a filter was installed i couldnt play so i think Bsafe internet service has to do sumthin with it
Have you EVER installed another version of the game? Sometimes leftover files from previous games are in conflict with the ones you have now. (Saved games from other versions are also bad). Have any of those?
