Hi, I hope somebody can help me out. i have always been able to CHECK my HOTMAIL emails at home, check WORK emails at home and been able to book virgin TICKETS online but  i cant anymore. i either get page cant be found or nothing shows up at all? what could be weong with my computer? i can check yahoo email though, somebody, please help me. Do you have a firewall? If so, what LEVEL is it on? Also, is your computer accepting cookies?

My computer is so old...I mean I have had it for 7 years and cant even add anymore memory to it..IT'S OLD (outdated) I just have all my stuff like icons on the front desktop and favorites and address for email etc...nothing really importantWell.... Some things such as favorite websites, and E-Mail, etc. Has all of that stuff saved on your internet service provider's server. You MAY not need to save it.... Also, if these "icons" are shortcuts, you will need the big files that they redirect you to....

When you add/delete things from your favorites list, Verizon knows of these changes, and saves it to their server. They do this so that you can use your favorites from any computer... So, if you switch computers, you should not have any trouble.... Are you using MSN to surf the web, or Internet EXPLORER?

Also what do you think about DELL computers..Well.... If you did take the computer nto the store, the poeple there connect your hard disk cables into some machine... That machine makes a CD of everything... Also, Dell computers are GREAT! I'm going to buy one myself this summer! Also, if you have enough floppy disks, then yes... I GUESS you could use them, but I'm not really sure about how to save your E-Mails and Favorites onto those, to be honest....

Hi, this is my first post and I hope someone can help.

I would like to transfer my shows that I saved on my DVR to my computer (then edit out the commercials and burn to DVDs).

I have:
*Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 (DVR)
*ATI All-In-Wonder 9600XT Card
*Microsoft Windows XP
*512 RAM
*Loads of hard drive
*Editing software

I have no idea how to GET started.

I tried:
*HOOKING up the s-video (out from DVR; in to tuner card). But, how do I make it "Go"? How do I SELECT the shows and get them transferring?

*Running cable TV "in" to DVR; then "out" to PC (so that I could see the shows that I saved." But, this would mean that I would need to play the show to capture it? I have about 20 shows and I don't want to sit and wait for them to record.

Is there a trick or a fast way?

Well I got the DVD burner and burnt my first DVD. It seems the .vob, .bup, and .ifo files only included the video/audio but no menu. Either way. I tried playing this DVD on another computer. The other computer didn't recognize it (it has a DVD-ROM) and my DVD player said it couldn't play it. That's odd. It works perfectly fine on the computer in which I made the DVD on. Someone tell me what's up.  

I burned the DVD on an XP computer.  

The other computer I have is an old Compaq with 98SE. It has played DVD's before.  

My DVD player is a standard DVD player I guess, it has played many DVD's.

I burned this on to a DVD+R without any problems using Nero 6.

My DVD player supports DVD+R format. Not sure about my computer though.

I have DVD-R disks, my burner came with a DVD+R disk so I used it. Do you recomend a disk I should be using?

When I said the part about how it plays on the computer in which I made it, I mean...

I burned it with my new external DVD burner and played it in the DVD-ROM drive (seperate drive that is internal).

When I put it on my other computer, the drive did the same thing as last time and acted LIKE it didn't KNOW what it was. Maybe the disk wasn't finalized correctly?

But then how would it play on my other DVD-ROM drive?

I made a new TOPIC so my questions weren't all scattered. Well they still kind of are. Any help would be great.It could be that the CD's were not finalized corectly... Also, it could be that you are using bad CDs.... I would use the ones that the manufacturer gave me first, but it depends on who the manufacturer of the CDs woudl be...

???I checked my autoexec.bat and config SYS. and there was nothing in there. How do i get the correct information in.Well now - Win generally does not need autoexec.bat or config.sys but if you wish to create entries in EITHER they are text files and entries can be created with any text editor like notepad (do not use word processors as they ADD special FUNCTION characters which will ruin your files).  I have an autoexec.bat file to remap my keyboard (Win.98) using ANSI which I find very good when churning thru' some files in Dos.

[glb]Flame[/glb]No Flame, it's the other way around: sometimes the data track on the CD will damage the speakers. If you insert a Dreamcast GD-ROM into a regular CD-ROM and you'll get a rather lovely woman saying so...

How it normally works is this. Since you can't normally combine data and audio on the one CD, it has to be seperated somehow, and the usual way of doing this (and this simplest, come to think of it) is to put all the data on the first track, and then the audio after it on subsequent tracks.

So as long as you skip the first track, you should be able to rip the tracks like a regular CD. Bear in mind this only works with certain games - it all DEPENDS on how they were coded.In FACT, I found this nice definition on searchstorage.techtarget.com

Hey guy's im back, i moved into my new house, and got my DSL back on... BUT my ISP sent me a nice hi-tech MODEM w/ wireless. It act's as a router also. so i have a 192.186.* IP and my external is my ISP IP.. when i try to run an FTP i can't USE 192* i have to use 4.* ip so others can connect to me right? They can't connect... i DONT know why, i disabled/removed my other firewall, and went to http://192.168.1.1 to configure my router/modem settings, and even disabled that firewall... on my FTP i have tried to use 192 ip for HOST, and even 4.* ip... and i myself can connect (localhost) to my 192 IP... of course.. But noone is able to connect to my computer at all... no firewalls... ports all open. Second, you need a static IP if you are running a server. Both internal and external (LAN and ISP)
Third, go into the router setup under port forwarding, FORWARD the necessary ports to your internal address.
Fourth, in your firewall, you must grant the server connection priviledges AND server priviledges. maybe the problem is you are using the modem and the router together or is this router a dlink one......just use the router........(((is this a linskys/netgear one)).....with the adsl  netgear i have  router.....it does it all... but noted the is configured to wireless......wlan......

Play MIDI, pause to where you want your midi to BEGIN
FILE--->TRUNCATE SONG--->DELETE FROM START TO CURRENT POSITION. Play track, pause to where you want your midi to end. FILE---->TRUNCATE SONG--->DELETE FROM CURRENT POSITION TO END. Do FILE----> Export Midi 0 File - SAVE to new FILENAME.

Hello all, I have recently been sent a couple of CDs full of music from a friend. They were cheap discs - verbatim - and I'm not sure how they were copied. They play fine but I'm now trying to make another copy of the disc and I'm having trouble. I have tried my USUAL method using Roxio: create cd image on hard drive and then create cd from image. I have also tried converting the songs to WAVE files and then burning the CD from those. It seems to copy fine but when I put it in a cd player the first song plays ok and then the rest are just crackly or silence with either method.

The music is not copyrighted so I know it can't be that. The WAVE files I have created play fine on my PC so why can't I burn them to disc? Will it make a difference whether I burn "track at once" or "disc at once"? Any help would be appreciated!What version of the Windows Media Player do ou have? You can "rip" the songs onto your COMPUTER, and just copy the songs onto a new CD. (Once ripped, they will go to the My Music folder) Keep in touch...

I just tried it on a cheap data disc (because I'm tired of wasting good cds) and it burned ok at a very slow speed and would play fine on my computer but it wouldn't play in a cd player. So I tried burning to a high quality audio disc and it got halfway through the burn and then stopped saying that it couldn't burn to this disc and I should clean it or try a different brand. It's a brand new TDK audio disc. I don't know what to try now. Could it be because the disc my friend sent me is a data rather than audio disc or because the disc was burned from MP3s or should these things not matter? I'm tearing my hair out.Well...... Try ripping the songs from the good CDs onto your computer (using Windows Media player), and they will be saved in the my music folder.... After, use Roxio to burn the files onto a good CD. If that doesn't WORK, then the songs MIGHT just be "bad".

right i have a huge problem

i switch my computer on and it'll go through its main system checks, i.e detecting keyboard/ mouse/ cdr drive etc, then once finished the comp will either goto a blank scrren or "no operating system detected" will appear.

I SPILLED warm cocoa on a BOX of FLOPPY A disks on which was recorded several years of my writings and records.  
Only a few of them are now accepted by the Floppy A drive of my computer.  For the majority I receive messages that the disk is not formatted or that it was formatted for an apple computer.  Is there a way of salvaging, restoring the disk and the info which was recorded onto them?
I did wipe them off and set them out to dry on a clean cloth.The goop is on the inside, not the outside.  If you keep inserting them in your drive, you will ruin the drive.

Try putting disks into warm distilled water, overnight.  Then remove and dry outside of disk.  Then let sit 3-4 days to dry.  They're probably unrecoverable and permanently unusuable.

failed to install properly. when installation disc remains in pc information is recognised, when removed it disapears.  have had similar experiences with other CAMERA drivers. the error message i receive tells me that the NETWORK is not available. would appreciate it if any one could advise.

emosemos......Did you follow the hardware and software INSTRUCTIONS exactly ......or did you just go ahead and install it ? The reason I ask is ....for example if you installed the hardware first ( and you should have installed the software first you could have problems )
The other thing is ......is the cam and its software compatible with your operating system ?
If you have followed the installation instructions to the letter ......I would contact the manufacturer of the camera and ask them for a RESOLUTION to your dilema.

StanMake sure the floppy drive is CONNECTED properly inside your computer. Could be the DISK? Try it with another one.Your drive might be broken... Is there something stuck inside of your Floppy Drive?

I'm having problems with the MARGINS of the papers i'm printing out. On microsoft word (or internet), when i try to print out something, it seemed as though everything is shifted down on the paper so that the top margin BECOMES way bigger than the bottom margin (doesn't match what it shows on my computer screen).

So how do I solve this?

look over on the left hand side ........put your cursor on the top margin and when it changes to a double arrow move it up to where you want it .


dl65  the margins/header/footer are normalhttp://www.comm.niu.edu/telematics/tutorials/word/margins.htmlReally, truly, it's more complicated than that.  I know how to adjust margins, etc. I know about headers, footers, gutters. However, the problem about this printer is that it doesn't just apply to microsoft word documents. It applies to anything I try to print including web PAGES (and yes, I know those margins are correct).  The printer just doesn't match the margin that the computer indicates on the screen.  

My printer can also copy documents.  When I copy, there's no margin problems, so it's not a printer problem.  My computer does HAPPY to connect to a main computer that connects to the printer (maybe that MAKES a difference?).  

Well, I hope someone will understand it's more than just microsoft word margins.  

Thanks for the responses though.Look at print preview first. The part of Word where you write your document is not an interactive print preview. Your computer only takes into account how things such as margins would affect the printout when you look at print preview. In the editing part, it's more of a "guess".

Make sure the paper is loaded correctly into the printer. Try printing out a document to that printer using the other computer and if you can try using your computer to print on another printer. Then we will know what is causing the problem.

I was given an older COMPUTER of three years that was in storage where I work.  They replaced them with updated computers.  I hooked it up at home and supplied it with a monitor, mouse, keyboard and printer.  Yes, you probably guessed it;  I can not start the computer.  I checked inside the tower for disconnects and there isn't any.  All plugs are secure!  I have already upgraded my newer computer with a better hardrive and printer and Windows XP and I have not had a problem.  My only problem was having Windows Millenium prior to XP.  Is there a possibility that there are batteries inside the older computer that have died out from being in storage for a long time?  Why won't my computer power up?  What should I do?Replace the CMOS battery - not doubt it is nbg after that term in storage.  Well  what kind of starage is this? CLIMATE controlled? If it got way too hot in that storage unit, then you can forget about it! Also, if it got wet..... You're not going anywhere.

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thanks for that suggestion in replacing the CMOS battery.  I hope it will solve the problem.  I will let you know either way.  As for storage, the TEMP was a constant 72 DEGREES and no moisture to spoil the components.  I, too, suspect the battery problem.  I get back to you on my progress.  Thanks agian!

I was wondering if ANYONE might be able to tell me what program to use to be able to PUT documents together to view them as a BOOK.  I would like to then burn them to a CD to view later from the cd, but I would like to be able to find pages WITHIN the book.

I have a Dell Laptop which I GOT about a year ago. Recently it underwent a complete system restore and a total wipe out of all the previously saved, downloaded and installed files. It's back in BUSINESS now, but I don't know how to reconnect to the internet. At my house, we have a linksystems wireless router and that's how I connect to the internet on my laptop. I've TIRED going to Dell's website but it's hard to navigate, and their customer service line is ALWAYS busy. Could someone please walk me through getting back online?

[glb]Flame[/glb]it WONT register that the cd is in the tray and it wont reinstall. Its not the cd drive, cause that seems to work fine.Well, that's pretty strange... It sounds like your problem is in the CD drive.... Are you SURE that the drive works properly? Will it install other software? Is your router install CD burned (copied)?

???..i just bought another OPTICAL mouse this one is doing the same THING the first one did.  at any given TIME the pointer will turn into a black box...and along the LEFT side of my desktop a LINE will follow the up and down movement of my mouse "black box"...the only way i found to fix it is to reboot the computer...doesnt happen all the time just most of the time.  inside the "black box" mouse sometimes there are computer language type print.  any suggestions...

i have multiple burned movies that are burned on a purple disk. have many different types of dvd PLAYERS in the house including a ps2. WONDERING if anyone have any knowledge to what type pf dvd player will play these?Well, as long as you burned the DVD correctly, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to play one just becuase it is purple.....

is there any softaware for notification of PHONE call when i am ONLINE? i use intel 536EP modem with windows xp.http://www.rayslab.com/phone_recorder/i downloaded the program call RECORDER as told by merlin, but that is for recording calls, but i want program so that it will notify me that somebody is calling me when i am on internet. thanxCall Corder can optionally display a Caller ID notification on every incoming call.i don't want caller id, but notification that somebody is calling when i am online as i am using dial-up method to CONNECT internet.dratul......Talk to your ISP.......when I was using dialup ....if I was on-line and someone called I would get a on screen alert ...letting me know who was calling and I could chose to answer or call back later .

Hi, as you can guess from the title of my entry, I built a computer, but it isn't QUITE working, and I was wondering if anybody can help...

Ok, so, the computer boots up, and then after doing the RAM check and checking for drives, it suddenly crashes and the screen GOES black, and the power lamp REMAINS on for a while after it crashes, and then the whole thing just SHUTS down...

Here's the list of parts:
-Pentium 4 Northwood 2.40BGHz
-FOXCONN 650 motherboard
-Audio and Video card integrated into motherboard
-1x 512MB DDR RAM from KByte
-Case and power from Powmax
-40GB hard drive from Seagate
-DVD R+-W drive from NU
-Floppy drive

I tried using another hard drive, and that got me into Windows, but then the computer crashed soon after, so this time I tried the thermal paste.... And well, it's up and running (For now, at least... It hasn't crashed for 8 hours, so I'm assuming it's fine), so thanks for the advice!

I use a hp pavilion 531w, is there anyway when I have a incoming PHONE call for the internet to disconnect and the phone ringvickyjo.....do you not have the option of seeing WHOIS calling you when you are online ........check with you phone company .........a box would come up on the SCREEN and you could choose to answer it or call them later.

I don't know anything about handheld pc's. I just want ONE to download books on to read and occasionally CHECK EMAIL. Is there differences between pda's, palm pilot's or pocket pc's. What is a good brand and what's a reasonable price. I SAW alot for sale of ebay but I don't know anything about what KIND is good for what I want to do? Help

When I turn on my computer it posts and passes all the tests
but then as soon as it starts to load Windows Xp Home EDITION SP2 it reboots.

Amd Athlon XP 2200+
Gigabyte 7NF-RZ
Patriot 512 MB dual channel
Nvidia 5200 w/ 256 mbPress F8 on Boot up and select "Last Known GOOD Configuration"

When booting it goes to that screen and ask how to start windows but none work.

I also forgot to add that I have just added the memory, motherboard and processor.Memory!  I had a similar problem.  It turned out that I had mixed PC2100 WITH pc3300.  

First check that the memory sticks are COMPATIBLE.  

Take out each memory stick in turn and SEE what happens.do you get stop errors.....or irq_less_than_equal errors! changing hardware?

I have a dell 4700 and run XP. If I want to install more RAM I know I have to buy it in pairs, but could i buy a 128mb stick and a 256 mb stick and install them, or will this not workIf  the mobo can handle it? yes.and if their are the same or just  one ramstick?look at tfmm....4....fmiSean......First of all ....who told you that you MUST install the ram in pairs ?  If if FACT you are correct and ram must be installed in pairs ........ Pairs refers to exactly the same .........like two peas in a pod.......like a matched set .......like identical twins ....So 128 mg and 256 mg wont cut it .......But before you rush out and start buying ram.......check the specifications for the mobo in your Dell 4700 .....Is that a dimension 4700 ........
I think it uses dual channel DDR ram ...and there should be 4 DIMM slots . I think that pc will take up to 4gb total ram ............ BTW whats installed now ......?

Hello everyone, I'm NEW here and I'm hoping someone will be able to help me with my computer.

Everytime I put in a CD to play the first song plays fine but then when i go to another track it goes to about half the speed it's supposed to be and then all of my media (videos, mp3's, etc.) are slowed down to the same speed as WELL. Any suggestions?

ChristinaCanadianGirl89......Do you have more than 1 cd drive so you could test the cd in the other one ? Is this something which just started ? Have you installed any WINDOWS UPDATES which coincide with your cd problems ?
What happens if you just put the cd in and let it auto play ....does the same thing occur?

dl65  I actually have a DVD writer for a second drive and it did the same thing. Don't worry about it now though. My brother helped me fix the problem. Thanks for replying though, I really appreciate it.

Hi everyone, this is my first post, and a Merry CHRISTMAS to you all .  The problem I have is, that when I click on a web page, it downloads for 1 or 2 seconds and then vanishes, and leaves me with a blank page.   When I download from my FAVORITES  it's OK.  I hope that SOMEONE can please help me.  THANK you .

I just burned a copy of the Christmas pictures from my digital camera, traveled 3000 miles and went to read it at my PARENTS house only to find that I forgot to SET the FORMAT so that the CD can be read by other drives. Is there any way to correct this without the computer that I burned the cd on?  Any help would be appreciated! Which, software did you use to burn it and can you get a hold of that software?On your software, hit the button that says format CD. This will format everything for you. Then simply burn your pictures on to the CD.

maybe your system configuration in cmos maybe wrong. try enabling the default for cmos setup...reboot..

Hi there everybody. This is my first time to JOIN this FORUM. By the way, I need to know something. Are there any consequences if I press the RESET button at my CPU RATHER than using the CTRL+ALT+DEL key? Is that harmful to my COMPUTER?Only use RESET if computer is completely "locked-up".

For some reason everytime I single click with my mouse it is double CLICKING... Knowing what version of Windows you are running would be helpful.

You could have single-click enabled. When you MOVE the mouse over an icon, but DON'T click, is it selected automatically? To disable, view > folder options > click classic style or custom style and deseclt it. On some OS, you can get folder options in the control panel.try other mouse..see if it has the same problem with your mouse..
or maybe your mouse is broken..buy another one...

hi i dont know what to do. i was trying to uninstall some stuff i didnt think i NEEDED so i would have more room on my computer but then when i restarted it the colors were way off and i only have 16 colors and my games wont work. i dont know how to GET my colors back or even what they were before but it doesn't look good and im lost. if ANYONE can help me thatd be great...Re-install the grafics CARD driversthanks but how do i do that?Either load the cd install disk which should contain vid/modem drivers if you have it ........or type hwinfo in the run box to tell you the make of the graphic card.....and download the drivers from the makers website......

I installed thunderbird recently, the mozilla email client, and i WANT to use it to handle my YAHOO account, is this possible, for EXAMPLE instead of having to check yahoo for my mail i just want to be able to open thunderbird and find out if i have mail and be able to check it from there.
