Find the number of ways of arranging the letters of the word MISSING so that the two S' s are together and the two I’s are together. |
Answer» In the given word MISSING contains 7 letters in which there are 2I’s are a like, 2S's are alike and rest are different. Treat the 2S's as one unit and 2I’s as one unit. Then we have 3 + 1 + 1 = 5 entities. These can be arranged in 5! ways. The 2S's can be arranged among themselves in 2!/2! = 1 way and the 2I’s can be arranged among themselves in 2!/2! = 1 way. ∴ The number of required arrangements = 5! × 1 × 1 = 120 |

Solve the equations 6x3 – 11x2 + 6x – 1 = 0, given that the roots of each are in H.P. |
Answer» Given equation is 6x3 – 11x2 + 6x –1 = 0 –––– (1) Put y = 1/x so that 6/y3 – 11/y2 + 6/y –1 = 0 6 – 11y + 6y2 – y3 = 0 y3 – 6y2 + 11y – 6 = 0 ––– (2) Roots of (1) are in H.P. ⇒ Roots of (2) are in A.P. Let a – d , a, a + d be the roots of (2) Sum = a – d + a + a + d = 6 3a = 6 ⇒ a = 2 Product = a(a2 – d2) = 6 2(4 – d2) = 6 4 – d2 = 3 ⇒ d2 = 1, d = 1 a – d = 2 – 1 = 1, a = 2, a + d = 2 + 1 = 3 The roots of (2) are 1, 2, 3 The roots of (1) are 1, 1/2, 1/3 |

Find the number of ways of arranging the letters of the word MONDAY so that no vowel occupies even place. |
Answer» In the word MONDAY there are two vowels, 4 consonants and three even places, three odd places. Since no vowel occupies even place, the two vowels can be filled in the three odd places in 3P2 ways. The 4 consonants can be filled in the remaining 4 places in 4! ways. ∴ The number of required arrangements = 3P2 × 4! = 6 × 24 = 144 |

Find the number of ways of arranging 6 red roses and 3 yellow roses of different sizes into a garland. In how many of them (i) all the yellow roses are together (ii) no two yellow roses are together[Hint : The number of circular permutations like the garlands of flowers, chains of beads etc., of n things = 1/2(n – 1)!] |
Answer» Total number of roses = 6 + 3 = 9 ∴ The number of ways of arranging 6 red roses and 3 yellow roses of different sizes into a garland = 1/2(9 – 1)! = 1/2 × 8! = 1/2 × 40,320 = 20,160 (i) Treat all the 3 yellow roses as one unit. Then we have 6 red roses and one unit of yellow roses. They can be arranged in garland form in (7 – 1)! = 6! ways. Now, the 3 yellow roses can be arranged among themselves in 3! ways. But in the case of garlands, clockwise arrangements look alike. ∴ The number of required arrangements = 1/2 × 6! × 3! = 1/2 × 720 × 6 = 2160 (ii) First arrange the 6 red roses in garland form in 5! ways. Then we can find 6 gaps between them. The 3 yellow roses can be arranged in these 6 gaps in 6P3 ways. But in the case of garlands, clock–wise and anti–clockwise arrangements look alike. ∴ The number of required arrangements = 1/2 × 5! × 6P3 = 1/2 × 120 × 6 × 5 × 4 = 7200 |

Read the passage given below :(1). Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. When areas in and around Leh began to expenence water shortages, life didn't grind to a halt. Why? Because Chewang Norphel, a retired civil engineer in the Jammu and Kashmir government came up with the idea of artificial glaciers.(2). Ladakh, a cold desert at an altitude of 3,000-3,500 meters above sea level, has a low average annual rainfall rate of 50 mm. Glaciers have always been the only source of water. Agriculture is completely dependent on the glacier melt unlike the rest of river/monsoon fed India. But over the years with the increasing effects of climate change, rainfall and snowfall patterns have been changing, resulting in severe shortage and drought situations. Given the severe winter conditions, the window for farming is usually limited to one harvest season.(3). It is located between the natural glacier above and the village below. The one closer to the village and lowest in altitude melts first, providing water during April May, the crucial sowing season. Further layers of ice above melt with increasing temperature thus ensuring continuous apply to the fields. Thus, farmers have been able to manage two crops instead of one. It costs about? 150,000 and above to create one.(4). Fondly called the "glacier man", Mr. Norphel has designed over 15 artificial glaciers in and around Leh since 1987. In recognition of his pioneering effort, he was conferred the Padma Shri by President Pranab Mukherjee, in 2015.(5). There are a few basic steps followed in creating the artificial glacier.(6). River or stream water at higher altitude is diverted to a shaded area of the full fading north, where the winter sun is blocked by a ridge or a mountain range. At the start of winter November, the diverted water is made to flow onto doping hill face through distribution channels Stone embankments are built at regular intervals which impede the flow of water, making shallow pool sand freeze, forming a cascade of ice along the slope Ice formation continues for 3-4 months resulting in a large accumulation of ice which is referred to as an "artificial glacier"1. For how many months does the ice formation continue for ?a. The ice formation continues for 1-2 months.b. The ice formation continues for 3-4 days.c. The ice formation continues for 3-4 months.d. Let A3BC and DE2F be four-digit numbers where each letter represents a different digit greater than 3. If the sum of the numbers is 15902, then what is the difference between the values of A and D?1. 12. 23. 34. 4 |
Answer» Correct Answer - Option 3 : 3 Let A3BC and DE2F be four-digit numbers where each letter represents a different digit greater than 3. The sum of the numbers is 15902. Calculations : Add both the terms A3BC + DE2F = 15902 We will start from basic of adding Firstly we will add C + F C + F = 2, so C + F must be 12 so C and F can be either (5, 7) or (4, 8) as numbers are different and more than 3 Now, B + 2 = 10 So B must be 7 as the sum of C and F will give a carry of 1 for this step. Now, 3 + E = 9 So, E must be 5 as it will get 1 as carry from the sum of B + 2 Now in last step, A + D = 15 So, A and D can be (7, 8) or (9, 6) But it is given all digits are different so, A and D must be (9 or 6) as B already has the value 7. Now the difference between A and D = |9 - 6| ⇒ 3 ∴ The difference between A and D will be 3. |
