Imagine you are the Secretary of your College. On the occasion of college day you are given the responsibility of introducing the Chief Guest to the audience. Write a speech in about 100 words using the points given in the profile. [5]Chief guest : Mrs. Sudha MurthyNative : Shiggaon (Karnataka)Education : B.E. in Electrical Engineering from BVB College, Hubballi.Profile : First female engineer hired by TELCO – Chairperson of lnfosys Foundation – member of public health care initiatives of the Gates Foundation – A teacher, philanthropist and a writer in Kannada and English – awarded Padmashri in 2006.

Answer»

Respected Principal and other dignitaries on the dais and off the dais, as all of us know, the most important event of an educational institution on its calendar of events is the Annual Day. The quality of the Annual Day depends on the calibre of the Chief Guest. That is why, today, I stand here brimming with pride because we have succeeded at getting consent from none other than an iconic leader – Mrs. Sudha Murthy to adorn the chair of the Chief Guest.

Since ours is a ladies’ college, the presence of Mrs. Sudha Murthy is of special significance. She is a woman achiever to be emulated by all our students as she is the first female engineer hired by TELCO. All of us know that this happened only because of the grit and determination of Mrs. Sudha Murthy. Once she came into the professional field, there has been no looking back for Mrs. Murthy. She is the chairperson of Infosys Foundation and we know that it is Infosys that has brought fame to India at the global level. Her philanthropic interests have found an outlet through her membership in Gates Foundation and its Public Health Care initiatives. She is a noble teacher and what is more she is a fine writer who has inspired thousands to serve society and inculcate the right values. A fitting tribute came her way when she was awarded the Padmashri in 2006.

I am sure our students from rural background will feel greatly encouraged by the fact that Mrs. Sudha Murthy hails from Shiggaon of Karnataka where education of girl children, in her time, was not the norm, but an exception. Despite that, Sudha Murthy did her B.E. in Electrical Engineering from BVB College, Hubballi.

During kite flying season, birds get injured badly. Write a report for your local newspaper about the plight of birds.

Answer»

Jodhpur, 28 Jan. 20–
Through the columns of this esteemed newspaper, I want to draw the attention of all the kite lovers of this city. Kite flying is a source of entertainment for people but kite flyers always forget that their entertainment is very painful for birds. During kite flying season, a large number of birds get injured. Their delicate bodies get hurt. Many times these injured birds are unable to fly. So, it is my humble appeal to all the kite flyers that they should be kind enough towards birds. They should stop flying kites and save the birds.

Child Labour

Child labour in India is a human right issue for the whole world. According to the statistics given by the Indian government, there are 20 million child labourers in the country. The government of India has tried to take some steps to lessen the problem of child labour in recent years by invoking a law that makes the employment of children below 14 illegal, except in family-owned enterprises. However, this law is rarely adhered to due to practical difficulties. In villages, there is no law implementing mechanism and any corrective action for commercial enterprises violating these laws is almost absent.

Dengue – A Nightmare

The country was perpetually victimised by the attack of dengue in the year 2010. Dengue is caused by a mosquito bite, a mosquito which is said to be found in clean and hygienic places. The fatal cases reported of dengue in Suryakhand were the highest in the month of November with an initial increase from the months of June and July. However, the disease started to come under control after the month of November. The number of patients who were cured completely kept on rising and falling simultaneously, showing the severity and lightness of dengue going hand in hand. There had been constant deaths from 10 to 20 people every month from June to December.

A can do a piece of work in 12 days and B in 15 days. They work together for 5 days and then B left. The number of days taken by A to finish twice the remaining work is1. 32. 83. 64. 7

Answer» Correct Answer - Option 3 : 6

Given:

A can do a piece of work in 12 days and B in 15 days.

Calculations:

Time taken by A to complete the work = 12 days

so part of work done in 1 day = 1/12

similarly, part of work done by B in 1 day = 1/15

work done by (A + B) in 1 day = (1/12 + 1/15) = 9/60 = 3/20

so work done by (A + B) in 5 day = 15/20 = 3/4

Remaining work = 1 - 3/4 = 1/4

Time taken by A to complete the remaining work = 12/4 = 3 days

Time taken by A to complete twice the remaining work = 6 days

∴ the correct answer is 6 days.

A and B can complete a piece of work in 18 days and 45 days respectively, they start work together but B left after some time and A finish the remaining work in 4 days, After how many days from the start B did leave the work?1. 12 days2. 10 days3. 9 days4. 14 days5. None of these

Answer» Correct Answer - Option 2 : 10 days

Given:

A alone can complete work = 18 days

B alone can complete work = 45 days

A and B start working together but B left after some time and A finish the remaining work in 4 days

Concept:

Total work = L. C. M. = 90

Start work together but B left after some time and A finish the remaining work in 4 days

Last 4 days work done by A = 4 × 5 = 20 unit

Work for did together = 90 – 20 = 70 unit

Efficiency of A and B = 5 + 2 = 7 unit

Let, After x days from the start B did leave the work

Then, x = 70/7 = 10 days

∴ After 10 days from the start B did leave the work

Pawan can do a piece of work in 32 days while Vishal can do the same work in 72 days they start the work jointly, after 6 days Rahul also joined them and thus all of them complete the remaining work in 10 days, all of them were paid total Rs.10,800, Find share of vishal.1.  Rs.30,002.  Rs.54,003.  Rs.25,004. Rs.24,005. None of these

Answer» Correct Answer - Option 4 : Rs.24,00

Given:

Pawan can complete work in 32 days

Vishal can complete work in 72 days

After 6 days Rahul also joined them and thus all of them complete the remaining work in 10 days

Total amount paid = Rs.10,800

Concept:

Total work = Time × Efficiency

Calculation:

Efficiency

Pawan

32

288/32 = 9

Vishal

72

288/72 = 4

Total work = L. C. M. = 288

Efficiency of Pawan and Vishal = 9 + 4 = 13 unit

In starting 6 day work done = 13 × 6 = 78 unit

Remaining work after 6 days = 288 – 78 = 210 unit

Let, Efficiency of Rahul = x unit

After 6 days Rahul Joined and they complete work in 10 days, Then the efficiency of Rahul = 210/(13 + x) = 10

⇒ 21 = 13 + x

⇒ x = 8 unit

Now Rs.10,800 divide in the ration of their work done

Total days to complete work = 6 + 10 = 16 days

Ram and Pawan do work for all 16 days

Rahul do work for 10 days

Work done by Pawan = 16 × 9 = 144 Unit

Work done by Vishal = 16 × 4 = 64 unit

Work done by Rahul = 10 × 8 = 80 unit

Work done by Pawan : Work done by Vishal : Work done by Rahul = 144 : 64 : 80

⇒ 9 : 4 : 5

⇒ The ratio of the share of their payment is 9 : 4 : 5

Share of Vishal = {4/(9 + 4 + 5)} × 10800

⇒ (4 × 10800)/18 = Rs.2400

Share of Vishal is Rs.2400.

Decision Of Streams

The increase in the number of students in Sirsi village of Rajasthan depicts our growing literacy rate in rural areas. The multiple bar diagram also shows the preference of students for Arts, Science and Commerce stream respectively.
Arts was chosen by the majority of the students in the last three years for being the most simple and the least expensive one. The boys who have to join their family business or the girls who are to be married soon after graduation prefer Arts to other streams. The craze ‘of science seems to have been curbed a bit as it falls second to Arts. But still, it is more popular than Commerce stream as some of the students are still ignorant about the bright opportunities related to Commerce.

Speed of motor boat along with stream(downstream speed) = distance/time

⇒ 24/2

⇒ 12 km/hr

Speed of motor boat against with stream(upstream speed) = distance/time

⇒ 10/1

⇒ 10 km/hr

According to the question,

Speed of motor boat = 1/2(downstream speed + upstream speed)

⇒ (12 + 10)/2

⇒ 11 km/hr

∴ The speed of the motorboat in kilometres per hour, is 11.

Advantages and disadvantages of mode in statistics.

Answer»

Advantages

  • It is easy to understand and simple to calculate.
  • It is not affected by extremely large or small values.
  • It can be located just by inspection in ungrouped data and discrete frequency distribution.
  • It can be useful for qualitative data.
  • It can be computed in an open-end frequency table.
  • It can be located graphically.

Disadvantages

  • It is not well defined.
  • It is not based on all the values.
  • It is stable for large values so it will not be well defined if the data consists of a small number of values.
  • It is not capable of further mathematical treatment.

Sum of mode and median of the data 12,15,11,13,18,11,13,12,13 a. 26 b. 31 c. 36 d. 25

Answer»

Given data, 12, 15, 11, 13, 18, 11, 13, 12, 13

First put the numbers in ascending order, 11, 11, 12, 12, 13, 13, 13, 15, 18

The mode of a data set is the number that occurs most frequently.

Here, 13 occurs three times.

So, Mode = 13.

Median is the middle number in the data set after arranging in ascending order.

Here, middle number in the data set = 13.

So, Median = 13

Sum of mode and median = 13 + 13 = 26.

Hence, the sum of mode and median is 26.

In the context of economic system of Mughal Empire, the term 'Polaj' referred to ______.1. cash payment2. annually cultivated land3. a type of coin introduced by Akbar4. a kind of tax

Answer» Correct Answer - Option 2 : annually cultivated land

The Correct Answer is "annually cultivated land".

  • During the Mughal Period, the land was divided into four categories namely
    • Polaj.
    • Parati.
    • Chachar.
    • Banjar.
  • Polaj was the land that is annually cultivated for each crop in succession and is never allowed to lie fallow.
  • Polaj was the ideal and best type of land throughout the empire.
  • This land was cultivated always and was never allowed to lie fallow.

  • There was no Mughal land revenue system before Akbar.
  • His father Humayun and grandfather Babur did not introduce any changes because they were the first conquerors of their dynasty and remained pre-occupied with subduing rebellions, consolidating empires, and maintaining order.
  • A proper land revenue system was founded by Akbar.
  • However, the system of Akbar was itself based on what Shershah Suri implemented during his short tenure.
  • Thus, the land revenue system of Akbar was neither innovation nor an invention.
  • His indebtedness to the earlier rulers is immense but this has not diminished his fame as far as the land revenue system is concerned.
  • He followed the policy of Shershah with greater precision and correctness and then extended it to various subah or provinces of his empire.
  • But this correction or precision did not come overnight.
  • Initially was tortuous enough to turn peasants into beggars, and forcing them to sell their wives and children.
  • But it was revised several times.

The corrections done by the Akbar inland revenue system can be mainly divided into three heads as follows:

  • Standardization of measurement of land
  • Ascertaining the produce per Bigha of Land
  • Fixation of state’s share in that produce
