Answer very briefly, the following:Why should the blood going away from the stomach and intestines pass through the liver and not directly to heart? |
Answer» The blood from the stomach and the intestine goes to liver before going to the heart. Liver monitors the substances before passing into the body. Excess of glucose is retained by the liver in the form of glycogen and the excess amino acids are broken down by the liver. Harmful chemicals are detoxified and bacteria are destroyed and excess minerals, water and vitamins are stored in the liver. |
| 2. |
What are the Co-dominance in Test Cross and Back Cross? |
Answer» Both parental genes expressed in F1 progeny so the offspring shows resemblance with both the parents. Eg- ABO blood group types in human. Blood group shows 3 different alleles (IA , IB , IO) and 6 different possible genotypes. Cross between IA IO x IB IO , shows the law of dominance, co-dominance & multiple alleles. |
| 3. |
Define Pleiotropy. |
Answer» Single gene may produce more than one effect. The basis of Pleiotropy is the interrelationship between the metabolic pathways that may contribute towards different phenotypes. Eg. Phenylketonuria, eye mutation in Drosophila and starch synthesis & size of starch grain. |

A bullet of mass 0.012 kg and horizontal speed 70 ms-1 strikes a block of wood of mass 0.4 kg and instantly comes to rest with respect to the block. The block is suspended from the ceiling by means of thin wires. Calculate the height to which the block rises. Also, estimate the amount of heat produced in the block. |
Answer» By using law of conservation of momentum, m1 u1 + m2 u2 = (m1 + m2)v, we have v = {m1 u1 + m2 u2}/{m1 + m2} = {0.012 x 70 + 0.4 x 0}/{0.12 + 0.4} = 2.04 ms-1 When bullet and block rise to the height h, using the law of conservation of total energy. 1/2 (m1 + m2)v2 = (m1 + m2) gh i.e., h = v2/2g = (2.04)2/{2 x 9.8} = 0.212 m = 21.2 cm Also, heat produced = Loss in K.E. = 1/2 m1u12 - 1/2(m1 + m2)v2 = 1/2(0.012)(70)2 - 1/2 (0.012 + 0.4) x (2.04)2 = 29.4 - 0.86 = 28.54 J |

A spring is kept compressed by a small trolley of mass 0.5 kg lying on a smooth horizontal surface as shown in the adjacent fig. 2.14 when the trolley is released, it is found to move at a speed v = 2 m s-1. What potential energy did the spring possess when compressed? |
Answer» Mass of trolley = 0.5 kg Velocity = 2 m/s When the compressed spring is released, its potential energy is converted into kinetic energy completely. Potential energy of compressed spring = kinetic energy of moving trolley Kinetic energy of trolley = 1/2 x mass x (velocity)2 = 1/2 ×0.5 ×(2)2 = 1/2 ×0.5 ×2×2=1J Hence, potential energy of compressed spring = 1.0J |

A trolley of mass 200 kg moves with a uniform speed of 36 km/h on a frictionless track. A child of mass 20 kg runs on the trolley from one end to the other (10 m away) with a speed of 4 ms-1 relative to the trolley in a direction opposite to the trolley's motion, and jumps out of the trolley. What is the final speed of the trolley? How much has the trolley moved from the time the child begins to run? |
Answer» Initial total momentum = pi = (m1 + m2)u1 = (20 + 200)(36 x 5/18) = 220 x 10 = 2200 kg ms-1 Final total momentum = pf = m1v1 + m2v2 = 20(v2 - 4) + 200 v2 [(By using v1 = v2 - 4)] pf = (200 v2 - 80) Using the law conservation of total momentum, i.e., pi = pf We have 2200 = (220 v2 - 80) v2 = 2280/220 = 10.38 ms-1 = 25.9 m |

A trolley of mass 300 kg carrying a sandbag of 25 kg is moving uniformly with a speed of 27 kmh-1 on a frictionless track. After a while, sand starts leaking out of a hole on the trolley's floor at the rate of 0.05 kgs-1. What is the speed of the trolley after the entire sandbag is empty? |
Answer» The trolley carrying a sandbag is moving with a uniform speed of 27 kmh-1. It implies that the system of trolley and the sandbag is not acted upon by any external force. If the sand leaks out of a hole on the trolley's floor, it does not lead to application of any external force, on the trolley. Therefore, speed of the trolley will not change as the sand leaks out or even after the sandbag becomes empty. |

What is then special about Newton’s first law if it is derivable from Newton’s second law? |
Answer» 1. Newton’s first law shows an equivalence between the ‘state of rest’ and ‘state of uniform motion along a straight line.’ 2. Newton’s first law of motion defines force as a physical quantity that brings about a change in ‘state of rest’ or ‘state of .uniform motion along a straight line’ of a body. 3. Newton’s first law of motion defines inertia as a fundamental property of every physical object by which the object resists any change in its state of rest or of uniform motion along a straight line. 4. Due to all these reasons, Newton’s first law should be studied. |

Solve for x and y: 4x + 6y = 3xy, 8x + 9y = 5xy |
Answer» The given equations are: 4x + 6y = 3xy …..(i) 8x + 9y = 5xy ……(ii) From equation (i), we have: \(\frac{4x+6y}{xy}=3\) ⇒ 4/y + 6/x = 3 ……(iii) For equation (ii), we have: \(\frac{ax+9y}{xy}=5\) ⇒ 8/y + 9/x = 5 ……(iv) On substituting 1/y = v and 1/x = u, we get: 4v + 6u = 3 ……(v) 8v + 9u = 5 …….(vi) On multiplying (v) by 9 and (vi) by 6, we get: 36v + 54u = 27 ….(vii) 48v + 54u = 30 ….(viii) On subtracting (vii) from (viii), we get: 12v = 3 ⇒ v = 3/12 = 1/4 ⇒ 1/y = 1/4 ⇒ y = 4 On substituting y =4 in (iii), we get: 4/4 + 6/x = 3 ⇒ 1 + 6/x = 3 ⇒ 6/x = (3 – 1) = 2 ⇒ 2x = 6 ⇒ x = 6/2 = 3 Hence, the required solution is x = 3 and y = 4. |
