When I first bought this laptop I was able to use MS Edge, MS Games, etc. I didn't like having to SIGN in EVERY time I sat down since I was the only one that uses it, so I disabled that FEATURE. Now, I've decided I'd like to use them. So, I went in and added my pswd, and I even added my PIN, but it still won't give me access to those features. What am I doing wrong?

I don't really want to upgrade to W10 (very happy with w7!) but I realise that I will probably have to in due course - MS are pushing w10 very hard, although I have turned off automatic downloads for all recommended updates to avoid MS CLANDESTINELY automatically downloading w10 later this year.

My question is this.

I have read that if I upgrade to w10 I have the opportunity to uninstall it within a month and go back to w7.

Does this mean that I am still OPERATING w10 - but USING it exactly like w7 - or, does it mean that I have jettisoned ie uninstalled w10 and am back with w7?

If the latter, then there will be a problem when MS stops supporting w7!

The ideal situation for me would be to KEEP OPERATING w10 (so that it continues to be supported) but be able to USE w10 just like w7. Is this possible?

Can I have some advice please! I'm not a techie so need advice in simple language!To have both I have heard of some creating a system image of 7, splitting the DRIVE into 2 partitions, upgrading to 10, then installing the image of 7 to the newly created partition on the same drive then at boot selecting 7 or 10.

Windows 10 when downgrading goes back to the original 7 install as it CREATES a backup of 7 before the upgrade so you can go back to how it was. After 30 days the OPTION disappears.

Other less complex and easiest method is to either get a cheap computer that has 7 on it and use that for 7 and upgrade current system to 10, or buy a new computer with 10 on it and leave old system at 7.

You may be having trouble with you network. TRY other sites, including sites you do not often visit. You browser may be using only data from your cache. This makes it seem the some sites work and others don't.

After a long saga of errors, freezes and restarts I now have Threshold installed more or less OK. I've start streaming on twitch about 2 months from now, and for that, I just bought a PC to get things done without any tipe of problem (that's what I thought when I bought it). The main problem here is that when I'm streaming "small games" like "Stardew Valley" or "Heartstone", the pc works just fine and I can stream for hours without interruption. But when I try to stream games like "Heroes of the Storm"; "H1Z1" or "GTA V" (All in max quality graphics), the pc crashes in 30 minutes with a BSOD WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR or CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT.

Recently I found out about this WhoCrashed software, so just ahead I'll post some errors that it showed me latelly.

This is TYPICALLY a hardware issue and the bsod's are not indicating which piece of hw is causing the problem.

1) Please look in device MANAGER. Are there any yellow or red symbols?

2) Have you recently added or changed any hardware?


3) Have you recently (before the bsod's started) updated any drivers? If not, try downloading and installing the latest driver for your display adapter (get the driver from the website of your display adapter manufacturer).

The fact that you are using a SSD may be a contributing factor. There have been all sorts of funny issues with SSD's.Allan, first of all, thank you very much for your answers!!

I've checked and everything seems okay, no yellow or red symbol at all

I've built the PC from the zero, so all the hardware pieces were putted together.. The only hardwares that got when I start using the PC were my razer naga mouse, reddragon keyboard and my logitec C920 webcam... So I don't know what hardware could done that

My PC is from Feb/16 so all drivers should be updated, I've sent my PC to the store that I bought and the guys installed a ssd driver and they said that this would resolve the problem (witch didn't), they made some test like FurMark, Speccy and Memtest for hours and they didn't found anything.. I don't know what to do...

They are saying that the problem can be on the I7 and I should replace this one for a new one. But before I do that, I was hopping to be sure about the problem being a driver thing or a physical problem of some hardware

I was trying to update the software on my D-Link DIR-615 router and downloaded the update on the D-Link support page. It downloaded a .bin file. By referencing the Support site I was eventually able to figure out how to update my router's software. Unfortunately, at the time I downloaded it I did not know I was not supposed to open the .bin file. So, when I double clicked on the .bin file and nothing happened, I stupidly designated a program change under "Properties" and changed it to have the program "NOTEPAD" open the .bin file. I have subsequently figured out how to use the .bin file to update my software. My problem now is that because I changed the .bin file to open using Notepad, no matter how I try I can't change it back to a .bin file. This includes deleting it and downloading it again from the Support page; every time I download it, it still SHOWS up as a Notepad file and not a .bin file. I hope you understand my problem and can help. Thank you.Changing the program it opens with doesn't change anything about the file itself.

What you've run into is Microsoft's bone-headed, but well-intentioned decision, starting with Windows 95, to hide File extensions. What happens is basically if Windows knows how to open a file, it won't show the extension at all, OTHERWISE, it will.

The dialog you saw basically sets the association, so from that point forward, Windows knows how to open the file, so it is presented without a file extension. ADDITIONALLY, the icon will change to show a little image of the associated program inside the default page.

The "fix" is effectively to do nothing- nothing about the file is changed, it merely opens with notepad by default. You should be able to right click on the file and select a new program to open it, or deselect the BOX that says to use the existing program or app to open all files of this type.

Im USING a DELL N5110 laptop and a Dell Bluetooth travel mouse with it, though the drivers are fine and it remains connected all the tie, it somehow stop working after around 20-30 mins. As soon as I open the bluetooth devices window, it starts working without even me to do anything else. It becomes a pattern if I have to work for hours on the Laptop. What could be the fix for it?Is it after you walk away from computer in which it might be a sleep STATE for bluetooth or does it happen RIGHT in MIDDLE of working?While working.

I upgraded my wife's laptop that had windows 7 to windows 10, and while she is in windows it keeps refreshing cosing the ICONS on the taskbar to disappear and reappear......
I ran windows update and it installed the BIG update that microsoft released, and it fix the problem, atleast i thought it did, but day or 2 later its doing it again...
she has a dell laptop that had originally windows 7...

timalanSounds like explorer is crashing/restarting (Just a guess). Could be conflict with an application that's not made for Win10 but works fine on Win7. See if we can narrow it down, press the Windows flag key + R and in the open run field type: perfmon /report (press enter).

Any information from the report that shows in red is an error/conflict. First thing I would look at is "Warnings" under Diagnostics Results.

Also type msinfo32 in the search box (press enter) and when the System Information screen comes up, check under "Software Environment" → "Windows Error Report" for any additional information.

What's the exact model of the Dell and or the service tag?

Forgot to add: Could be a corrupt user profile. Quickest way to check is to create a new user account and login to that. Test to see if the problem occurs with the new user.




I ask originally if msinfo32 will still open on a 64bit system, cos my wife's OS is 64 bit but i have a 64 bit and i ran that msinfo32 and it open so i answer my own question..lol

This sounds like a manufacturer sound audio issue for some of us. I found this solution and it worked for me. I found some error in the Events Manager and this one was relevant "IDTNC64.cpl." "The root cause of the problem is that the audio software supplied by IDT and USED by several PC manufacturers (Dell, HP and probably others) is not compatible with Windows 10. IDTNC64.CPL is one COMPONENT of that software and the correct solution is to uninstall the IDT audio altogether. Provided you have just restarted your PC, you should be able to use a Windows Run Box (Win Key + R) before the crashes get too serious. Type 'control panel' into the run box prompt and when the Control Panel appears, use Uninstall to seek out the offending IDT program - on my PC it had an icon of a musical note with the LETTERS IDT next to it - and Uninstall. On rebooting the PC (use Ctrl-Alt-Del to power down if necessary) and restarting, Windows will automatically detect any missing audio drivers and install appropriate ones (not from IDT). You can then check that IDTNC64.CPL is no longer present in C:\windows\system32. If you have not yet migrated from an earlier version of Windows, it is best to Uninstall the IDT software in the old operating system (again, Windows will automatically reinstall compatible drivers) before attempting the upgrade to Windows 10." After days of troubleshooting, I finally have no desktop or file explorer loop crashes!

So I use windows 10 search within EXPLORER extensively and would like to know if there is a way to FORMAT the search results. Every time I search, I'm given a list of results in the content view. I then have to go to view and switch to details, then re-arrange and expand my columns. In normal windows explorer, I can setup the view exactly how i want it, then go to folder options and click "apply to FOLDERS". This functionality is great, but SEEMS to be lacking from the search RESULT point of view. Any suggestions?

I used too be able too run EasyBCD and tell it too add a name a Windows Drive that I wanted too my Dual Boot Menu, when Windows started. For some reason though I added, Windows 10, too the option menu but, when I select it not booting into it.

Oxcoooo428 /Sytem32/winload.exe can not verify digital signature EasyBCD was made before Windows 10 was released. So it is not fully compatible. For information, you NEED to check with them.

Hes is right. This is a Windows 10 issue. Use the boot manager of Windows 10.

Microsoft tech support person DELETED files that didn't appear used or important but they are client files for business. I need them for IRS and CA Dept. of R.E. records and audits. This occurred when I up graded to Windows 10 & computer was running too slow. A Microsoft support person remoted into your computer and deleted files?

This sounds like one of those fake Microsoft support scams in which a person pretends to be Microsoft and intentionally deletes data and asks for credit card info.

Additionally data like that should be placed onto a SERVER with tape backups or some other backup means to avoid total data loss. If you never ran any backups or saved data to an external device you may never see it again!

Your best bet for this system right now to try to get any data back from it is to shut it down and stop using it as for any further use after the deletion of files increases the likelihood that the sectors on the drive would be reused to store new data. You may be looking at a partial to total data loss of your important data because of this fact.

There are tools out there you can use yourself to try to undelete files, but given the importance of these files you might want to hire this out to a local computer shop to go in carefully and try to retrieve files that have been deleted. The best method is to use a LIVE Linux OS which will not write any data to the drive and try to recover files for you to another drive such as a USB stick as for with Windows running, the longer it runs the more likely it will overwrite the sectors were the important data resided since Windows has the sectors flagged as free SPACE to be written to and data there with the important files OVERWRITTEN.

I've just build my new home computer, installed windows 10 and everything works just FINE. Except one thing: I can't install anything via DVD. I tried several different programs now and all of them get stuck at the point where the installation starts. There is just the setup window saying "Status:" and the progress bar stuck at about 10 to 25%. Everything LOOKS normal but nothing MOVES, except the DVD in the drive. It's an ASUS 24F1ST by the way and the driver is up-to-date.
Any clue what the problem is? Is my optical drive BROKEN or is it a compatibility ISSUE? It may be an installer problem.
As a test, try this. Make n empty folder and copy the contents of the DVD into the folder. It it does copy, then the DVD is doing good.
After a lot of tests I found out that the installation actually works. It's just that the progress window is stuck. Does this make it a displaying error? Will keep working on it.

Because my laptop has limited memory I changed the default download folder to a microSDXC card.
However there are a few issues and questions arising from doing this:

• • some things still want to download and/or set up on C:/ drive
  • I am getting DUPLICATE downloads in my new default drive as well as the original - will deleting the 'Program Files' and 'Program Files (86)' on C:/ drive solve this issue and is it safe to delete these?
  • sometimes an exe file won't start because it can't find file location

HOW did you change the download location?

So last time after i change in my UEFI boot priority (weird but on past it working fine ) from :"UEFI USB KINGSTON" to "P1 SSD SAMSUNG EVO 250 GB" i am getting weird BOOTING problem with Windows 10.



When starting Windows 10 boot LOADER starts by "preparing automatic repair" and diagnosing PC. Then after this i get screen with Your pc did not start correctly or Automatic Repair couldnt repair your pc . And when i click restart then Windows 10 boot fine. So i am needing 2 boots to boot properly to windows.

My disk is on MBR partirion. Is this related to my UEFI/Partitions?

Somebody said to me this:"UEFI booting requires a GPT disk. This is why Windows has to FIX itself and only boots in 2nd cycle - as you keep trying to boot UEFI to an MBR disk."

Also i know that UEFI firmware can emulate BIOS functionality (CSM/Legacy) and work with MBR disks just fine. Or i am wrong? And cause is elsewhere? Hardware, software/bios issue?

I just installed Windows 10 in a computer with a new hard drive. I used a Microsoft DVD. During installation I was never asked for a license KEY. After installation, I checked activation and it said "Windows 10 is activated with a digital entitlement" What gives? Thanks What copy of Windows did the machine originally ship with? If it had 8 originally then 10 has probably picked up the 8 key from the UEFI and used that to get the free upgrade to 10.Ditto if the machine has had Windows 10 installed before, no need to reactivate when REINSTALLING the same version.There are no Win 10 DVD's...tell us the real story...Recent information.

I have HP TouchSmart 7320 all in one PC which originally came with Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit.

After upgrade to Win 10 my system automatically shuts without giving any reason. It just says shutting down and it GOES off. Occasionally it RESTARTS by itself as well.

All latest windows updates have been installed and device manager shows that all devices are working fine. I tried GOING back to Win 7 and system worked fine. But after Win 10 update the problem re-occurs. Quote

I tried UPGRADING Windows 7 to Windows 10 last NIGHT. WENT fine until I got to checking for UPDATES. It was checking for updates for 3+ hours. I RESTARTED it and tried again. The same thing happened. Any help would be appreciated.

Recently, I took the offer of the FREE Windows 10 download to REPLACE Windows 7 that was installed on my computer. Before, I had Windows 7 installed and in two partitions. This was very useful as I always had the option of system restore for any issues (And believe me, for almost every issue that I have had with my computer, and the countless postings on forums, nearly every issued had to be resolved with a system restore. It's a lot of hassle, but it works: you can always try to find out if there is ANOTHER way).



Now, I don't know if I have a second partition and if I do, is it Windows 10? I may have nothing or Windows 7 on the hidden partition.



I have an option in settings where I can do a reset. This sounds ok, but if it requires an internet connection, it could be totally useless. My last problem was a corrupted network connection driver, so I would be lost in that situation, and I'm sure you've guessed how I solved that one: system restore!



The backup option in settings advises that I can use my Windows 7 backup disc: ok, but then I'll have Windows 7 back on my computer, and will I have the option of reinstalling Windows 10 for free, or will I have to pay for it?



My recovery disc burner software offers to copy my hidden disc. This would be fine if; 1) There is one. 2. It's Windows 10.I'm not clear on how having two installations of Windows provides additional System Restore options- I suspect you don't mean Windows System Restore feature but some sort of IMAGE copying?

I THINK that the way I asked my question was confusing. To show what I meant as there is some confusion between the terms second partition and second installation (which may be the answer if I can install onto a hidden partition), here is my disc manager data. It may help.

If the PC shipped with Win7 then that is what's on the hidden Recovery Partition...
If getting back to 7 is your goal just follow the manuf. info on running the recovery...
Afterwards you can clean out/wipe any Win 10 install ...if it's there.

I am new to Windows 10 Pro having just purchased a new HP Pavilion with the Intel i7 6700, 16 GB ram, Nvidea Geoforce GT 370 graphics card, 2 TB hard drive. It's only been a few days but noticed what appears to be a somewhat single threaded nature when doing a couple of intensive things that I have not noticed on Windows 7 (old desktop) and Windows 8.1 (laptop). When copying folders with a large amount of files in from an external drive the mouse pointer would freeze. At times I could move it to multi task but the mouse pointer movement was erratic. Most of the time it would not move. Tried Alt tab and Windows key tab to move to another open window and no luck. I am done transferring files but just wondering why that file transfer consumed Windows 10 with multiple CPUs and a ton of memory.

Pretty happy with 10 other than the Onedrive and File Manager. MS has made it a little difficult to not use the Onedrive. I don't trust the cloud having been an IT data center manager and knowing the lack of SLA's in YEARS past. I want my own external drives to backup on that I can unplug and keep safe.

I have a program that LOADS up when I turn my computer on. I don't need it to do that and I cannot for the life of me find where the start-up menu is. I've been all over Microsoft searching for it, but I can't even get an explanation there. In the old version, you just click the Start button, scroll down to Startup and whatever is there you don't want, you delete it. What's up with Windows 10? I know I'm not real computer smart, but this should be simple.You can use the Startup Tab in Task Manager to manage Startup Items. It will show items that are starting from a number of locations, not just the Startup folder.

Microsoft has not forced people to upgrade to 10 yet.... Yes they have been very annoying in the pop ups to get the free upgrade, but you should not all of a sudden one day boot up your computer and have it upgrade to 10 by itself.

Last nighht after my windows 10 updated,it has started to show a watermark on the lower right hand side to activate windows. Befaore that it was working fine. I am attaching a screenshot of it. Kindly guide me as to what can be done. This copy of Windows was initially upgraded from windows 7

Under Windows 7 whenever my PC went into 'sleep' mode it always enabled me to resume internet access after waking up my PC. However, under Windows 10, I always have to restart my PC no matter whether I put it in 'sleep' or 'hibernate' modes.

PeterHmm, seems strange that this apparently does not affect many users. I've never encountered the problem with Windows 10. My guess is that it is a problem that only arises with systems with certain hardware components and certain device drivers.

So I just built my new PC and installed my Video Drivers, but also REALIZED my MOBO came
with a CD titled MSI "Intel Motherboards Drivers and Utilities" Do I need to INSTALL this CD as well

I want to be able to boot in Safe Mode with Networking but when I try I am told that I cannot have Networking in Safe Mode and must log out if I want to connect to the internet. How do I deal with this.

A further point, I need things to be simple. Has booting into Safe Mode with F8 been restored yet? If so, what way to switch it on? More info needed.... why is networking IMPORTANT at the safe mode level where safe mode is generally used to fix a local problem without networking needed? I've copied the relevant Chess Titan files from my old PC's hard drive which CAME as standard with Windows 7 and downloaded them onto my new PC which RUNS Windows 10. Can someone please let me know how I can EXTRACT and open the Chess Titans game from the Windows 7 folders.

The files I've uploaded are: chess.dll (28,322KB); chess (3,116KB) and chess MCE.

Where is the data physically stored, hard drive or RAM? If I let my recycle BIN get loaded with deleted documents and/or never delete documents and software downloaded and stored in my Downloads file, will that slow down my PC if I have plenty of unused capacity on my harddrive? Thanks. Recycle bin is more like a folder that is used as a collection of what should be junk, but its a last chance location for anyone who accidentally deleted a file. Its stored on the hard drive or SSD. ( *files are saved there when deleted unless hard deleted with shift+delete etc. )

RAM is not a location to store anything long term as for on POWER off unless its a server with battery memory its wiped clean on shutdown.

Its best to check in there every once in a while and flush it out to free up hard drive as part of system trash management.The recycle bin is a hidden folder on each drive. You can configure the size of the individual folders and on which drives the recycle bin should be active (vs permanently DELETING files immediately) by right-clicking on the trash bin icon and selecting "properties".One question...why are you letting it get that loaded ? ?...is this a hoarder syndrome ? ?

JimFirst of all, why were you updating drivers - was there some issue? Second, the correct way to update drivers is to visit the website of the VARIOUS hardware manufacturers, download their drivers, and install them. Playing with drivers via device manager is asking for trouble.

As for the ethernet not connecting, I'm confused about that as well -- it registered that there was a connection, but it couldn't connect to the internet. At risk of sounding like an utter moron, I'll admit that that could be because we unplugged a wire from the "ethernet" section of the router and simply plugged it into the computer. So I have an odd thing I'm trying to do. I want to stream the internet from my computer from the computer's hardware ethernet PORT to the ethernet port of my Xbox. Almost as if the ethernet port on the back of my computer acts as a tiny, one-port router. I want to do this because I want to stream games from my Xbox to my computer which is all well and good except that my router is terrible for that sort of thing, and also rather FAR away. The idea is if I hook the Computer and Xbox directly together through an Ethernet cable, connection should be very much improved.

Video streaming is often less than 5 Mbps.

Sooooo I'm looking for another solution.So Router to XBox is wifi and thats why connection is junk? Just run a Cat5 wire to XBox and Router.

You would need a Cross over cable to go direct from PC to XBox as well as you would need to have 2 network adapters in your computer. One to act as a gateway connection and the other to connect to internet.

Its far easier to just run a cable from XBox to Router and do away with wifi than it is to have your computer having to act like a router and PC at the same time. I havent messed with ICS since the days of DIAL-up and Windows XP with 2 computers sharing a single 33.6k dial up connection so that 2 people could do college work at the same time at the cost of a single phone line and ISP plan before DSL and Cable BROADBAND was in my area and the copper lines were so crappy that they wouldnt sync at 56k. I've only been on my computer for 1/2 hour this morning and WENT to click on the Start Menu and when I did, nothing happens. How do I get it to work again? I can right click on it, but that only throws up a menu for Control Panel. Is this a brand new computer or one that recently upgraded to WINDOWS 10?

Its a greater probability that someone walked over to your computer running to check their own e-mail vs a hacker doing this. I'd delete cookies from browser and stored passwords and all and give it a couple days. I assume your system DOESNT automatically LOGON and so someone cant turn your computer on and USE it without you around? If it automatically logs on to Windows, I'd change it to require a password.

I'm CONFUSED, cause when I try to take to RENAME the music and note and take those things off it says "If you change a file name extension, the file might become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?" and I change it and makes me open it with something else and the icon is missing and the music don't work

oh ok, that SOLVES that one, tyThe default for Windows File Explorer is to hide the file extensions so you don't see them. I personally can't stand not seeing the file extensions so I always change that setting to display extensions. If you changed that setting to hide extensions, you would no longer see the extensions in File Explorer. Not sure if that is sufficient for you or not.

You could change the extension from .mp3 to .music (I guess, never actually tried it) and then you would need to associate the .music extension to use your preferred music player. Some programs use the extension to know how to handle a file while others ignore the extension and look at the contents of the file to know how to handle. For instance, you might have files with the extensions .mp3 and .aac. If you changed those both to .music, programs that depend on the extension to determine what type of file it is and how to DECODE it, will not work.thank you for the info, how do I hide file extensions, where do I go ?

RegardsI took a quick look at your attached event log - it's a clean download if anyone is concerned, although the site itself may have adverts etc so if you download it, please be careful that you're downloading what you think you are!
I haven't had chance to look through it more thoroughly but you SEEM to have a lot of errors and warnings which aren't normal. You say you've had this computer for two weeks, was it bought new? I built a computer for my Mother several years ago and keep it update from time to time when I visit my parents. The problem that I'm experiencing is that while Windows 7 works just fine, Windows 8, 8.1, and 10 all freeze during the boot up process. It happens on the black screen with teal Windows logo and the spinning circle is not there. She presses the restart button and after a couple of tries, it eventually boots up and everything works just fine until the computer is turned off and you have to turn it back on again.

My first thought was to update the Asus M3A78-EM motherboard's BIOS to the latest version; however, the latest version, released in 2010, is the one that's currently installed. My next step was to reset the BIOS to the factory defaults. From there, I opened the case and noticed the DVD burner had failed so I unplugged that. I then moved the SATA cable on the hard drive to either port 0 or 1 and pushed on all the wires to MAKE sure they were FULLY CONNECTED. Finally, I used a Windows program to do a S.M.A.R.T. TEST and I also tested the RAM modules with the tool that comes on the Windows disc.

Everything looks fine to me. I don't what to try next. She doesn't want Windows 7 because it's old and she wants to say current with the latest and greatest technology and I don't really want to REPLACE the old motherboard with another old AM2+ motherboard. Maybe there some Windows setting I could change? If you all have any ideas please let me know.

A few DAYS ago over half of the shortcuts on my desktop disappeared. I have no idea what happened to cause this. My user desktop folder still showed all of the shortcuts that were previously on the visual desktop. When I attempted to recreate the missing shortcuts on my visual desktop I received an error message asking to rename the shortcut to "Shortcut" (2).

I deleted the shortcuts in my user desktop folder and created new ones on my visual desktop. When I selected "align icons to grid" they all went to the first line at the top of my visual desktop. When I tried to drag them back down they snapped back to the top. When I selected "auto arrange icons" over half of them disappeared again. In addition, when I tried to install Acronis True Image 16 the program would not complete the installation because it could not create a shortcut on my desktop.

I opened Windows PowerShell (ADMIN) and ran sfc /scannow. The CBS.log file showed two corrupt files. I don't remember which ones. One was a .dll file and the other one was a .pri file. I then did the following:
Created a new folder in D:\ and named it “mount”
Searched for "install.wim" on the Windows 10 DVD and copied it to D:\
Opened Windows Powershell (Admin) - Copied and pasted each of the following lines one at a time and ran:

Dism /mount-wim /wimFile:D:\install.wim /index:1 /MountDir:D:\mount
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:D:\mount\windows /LimitAccess
Dism /unmount-wim /Mountdir:%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\mount /discard
All of the commands ran successfully.
I ran sfc /scannow and the CBS.log indicated there were no corrupt files.

The desktop problem is still the same. I do not want to use System Restore at this point because I only have one old restore point. I previously created a task to create a restore point each time Windows starts but it is not working (thus the reason for wanting to install Acronis). I have spent two days since that point installing programs and tweaking numerous settings in Windows and the programs and do not want to lose all of that work. I am unclear about what I will lose by TRYING to reinstall Windows from the installation DVD or trying to run the executable from within Windows.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem would certainly be appreciated.

Some details. This is Windows 10, -right?
Have you already made backups of Documents, Photos, Music and other things that you either created or received?
Besides the Win 10 install DVD, do you have install MEDIA for all your programs?

Also, have you another user account? Do you see the same issues in another user account?
Check the resolution setting in display properties. It sounds as though the icons are there, but off the visual screen. Change to a higher resolution and see what happens. Also, look in device manager. Are there any yellow or red MARKS next to your display adapter entry?

The little WHITE windows icon in the bottom LEFT corner has stopped working (opening all the Win 10 click-on panels) when I left click on it. What did I accidently screw up?

The icon STILL opens a box menu when I right click on it (Programs, Power, Event, System,...).

How do I return to the original left click function?Never found how I changed my display to WIPE the Win 10 desktop.

Did a system restore, back to mid JANUARY, and the problem was fixed.

A few days ago, I was on Skype with my FRIENDS when my computer suddenly stopped responding. The mouse had not froze, and I could still talk and hear my friends over Skype, but I could not click anything, so I simply thought that something had caused all my programs to crash at once. I tried restarting the computer, and everything worked fine up until Windows started loading. I came as far as the spinning loading circle that shows up early during booting Windows, and suddenly the screen turned black and the MONITOR lost the signal. At that point, I had made the conclusion that something was up with my GPU, so I decided to take it out and try launching only with the motherboard, but this had no different results, except that the monitor no longer lost its signal, it just stayed black or a darker shade of gray. I tried booting in several different safe modes, but NONE showed other results than the situation explained above.

At this point I was mildly annoyed, and thought something might be wrong with the OS, and decided to try to clean the entire computer, as I have nothing of much VALUE on it, as it is mostly used for gaming. It is also worth mentioning that I tried diagnosing the computer without much results through the repair system, and I also had no backup, which I should probably start doing whenever I can get this thing work again. Reinstalling started, and I came to an unknown percentage before the system suddenly told me that it could not reinstall the OS, as an error had occured. This leads me to believe that there is a problem with the hardware, but diagnosing which part is pretty much out of my league, and I would really appreciate some help from you guys! If you have further QUESTIONS regarding the computer in terms of parts, I'll see if I can get them. And feel free to ask if there is anything else you need to know, and I'll be here to inform you. Thanks in advance!Its quite possible that the hard drive or solid state drive is damaged or corrupted. If you know the manufacturer of the drive thats in your system such as if its a seagate you can download their bootable drive utility to diagnose if the drive is damaged or healthy. If the drive is healthy then its likely that the restore partition has corruption. There is a very very slim chance its memory related but im feeling it has something to do with the drive and corruption or damage.

Its also possible for a weak power supply to cause this... however removing the video card should have taken some load off of it to run healthier.

A friend of mine recently UPGRADED tp WIN 10 it worked fine for several months but now it wont boot up.
When he powers up the machine it shows the Packard Bell logo then goes off when you press the function buttons to go inti safe mode it just beeps this happens with any of the function buttons.
Ive tried getting into the BIOS to change the boot ORDER same problem just get a beep, so I'm unable to use a boot disc to reinstall the operating system.
The only wat I cant turn the power off to the computer is by taking the battery out.
Ive no details of the computer as I cant get in to find anything .
Any help would be appreciated jhaddhIve removed the HDD from the LAPTOP this enabled me to access the Bios allowing me to make my optical drive the first boot device touble is as soon as I put the HDD back it reverts to the HDD to the first boot device.
I tried booting to the recovery disc and then PUTTING the HDD back but the recovery disc didn't allow met to repair the drive.
Is there any way I could format the drive and reinstall the oS

Did you remember to press "F10 to save changes and Exit" ? ?Yes I pressed f10 but as soon as I refit the hard disc it over rides it backgoes back to trying to boot to the hard disc.
I tried taking the HDD out booting to the CD it booted to the CD then I had to put the HDD disc bsck while the power was still on but the recovery disc still couldn't access the HDD.
I was wandering if I could format the disc any other way to get rid of whatevers stopping me accessing the HDD

Thee is no strong reason for moving to Windows 10. But it you did have a strong reason -You would not have started this thread. -Right?
By the time 8.1 gets to end of life, windows will have morphed into something different.

First of all, why don't you DOCUMENT some of the "negative comments" regarding W10? I haven't heard any - and I use it on 3 systems. Second, support for W8 will not end until 2023. When I tried to go back to Win8.1 it tells me that the files can not be found.

I was reading about Threshold 2 and someone said to see if you have it to run settings and about and they gave the build number 10586.3, i have Build number 10586.17..
