Solve : Admin Acct & Pswd Don't Open MS Edge, Etc? |
|
Answer» When I first bought this laptop I was able to use MS Edge, MS Games, etc. I didn't like having to SIGN in EVERY time I sat down since I was the only one that uses it, so I disabled that FEATURE. Now, I've decided I'd like to use them. So, I went in and added my pswd, and I even added my PIN, but it still won't give me access to those features. What am I doing wrong? |

Solve : USING W10 LIKE W7? |
|
Answer» I don't really want to upgrade to W10 (very happy with w7!) but I realise that I will probably have to in due course - MS are pushing w10 very hard, although I have turned off automatic downloads for all recommended updates to avoid MS CLANDESTINELY automatically downloading w10 later this year. |

When any web site goes down, CHECK to see if it have a page on Facebook and they might have an explanation. Otherwise, one can use a proxy server to see if it is visible in another area. Sometimes that happens. |

Solve : Threshold 2? |
|
Answer» After a long saga of errors, freezes and restarts I now have Threshold installed more or less OK. Like some OTHERS (in the UK) I wasted much time trying to find the Cortana Notebook inking feature, only to learn it is not(yet?) available in the UK (and elsewhere). Why was this not explained? Wish I could tell you but I still can't get Threshold 2 I know some who just got the Windows update that puts the Win10 icon in the system tray, that's 4 months. If you don't want to wait, download the ISO file. Open this page in a browser in a non-Microsoft OS, choose your edition and LANGUAGE and it gives you download links for 32 bit and 64 bit Home/Pro valid for 24 hours to get the ISO: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Doing it in a non-Windows OS by passes the media creation tool and gets you the actual ISO link. You can right click the link button and copy the link location and use it in a browser in Windows to do the actual download (about 3 GB) [update] Or (at the moment) you can use a browser in Windows to go to the German Tech Bench site and get the ISOs, just be sure to choose the right edition (Edition auswählen) and language (Produktsprache auswählen) https://www.microsoft.com/de-de/software-download/techbench Sorry CC and Salmon, thought I'd replied but have returned to post an update and REALISED I didn't. I know you can download the ISO, which I have, I have just been holding off to see if it eventually trickles down through Windows Update. Salmon's post above is useful for anyone who wants to be able to download the ISO easily though, I did that initially to do a clean install of Windows 10 rather than use the media creation tool. My gf's laptop picked up the November update today after the normal Patch Tuesday updates, it's been downloading it for a while so it'll PROBABLY install tomorrow. Installed the same round of patches on my machine, rebooted and re-checked for updates, but still no TH2. It looks like that means it's still not available for everyone, which I see Computer_Commando has alluded to above, that MS may still not be making it available to everyone at once possibly to conserve bandwidth. Just updating here as I thought someone may find this useful and/or reassuring, if they haven't got the TH2 update showing yet then it may just take a little more time. Edit: though, I'm not sure what criteria they are using to determine which machines get the update. My gf's laptop was upgraded quite a while after I installed Windows 10 on my machine, and we use the same connection and the same IP so it doesn't seem like it's based on location or available bandwidth. My machine also runs 24/7 whereas hers is on for maybe 4 hours a day. Maybe it's semi random or MS are using some internal logic that isn't obvious to outsiders to determine which systems get the update before others.I was able to get my old desktop updated to Threshold 2, it wasn't showing it in Windows update, but after 5 or 6 reboots, it started showing up. Then it failed to install and I had to reboot another 5 or 6 times for it to succeed, not sure what was up with that. Speaking of that, In another post, I mentioned that Floppy Drives didn't work with Windows 10, and CC stated they did. I was curious so I turned on my old desktop that evening. It has Windows 10 and I hadn't updated it to Threshold 2 at the time. It was also my 'source' For Floppy drives not working, as it has a Combo Card reader FDD drive installed- I was able to boot DOS 6.22 but Windows 10 never let me access the floppy drive- A: at the prompt gives me Invalid Drive specification, for example. This behaviour persisted- but while I had it on I went through the fun described above to install the latest updates. After that, I was able to access the floppy drive. I don't know if it was Threshold 2 or another previous update, but at some point it seems they added-back support for Floppy Drives- I'm quite certain it had at least RTM since I had installed Windows 10 from the release MSDN ISO. I'm a bit tempted to see what Windows 10 thinks of my 5-1/4" floppy. |

Solve : BSOD - WINDOWS 10 - How do I fix it?? |

Solve : Huge .bin file problem? |
|
Answer» I was trying to update the software on my D-Link DIR-615 router and downloaded the update on the D-Link support page. It downloaded a .bin file. By referencing the Support site I was eventually able to figure out how to update my router's software. Unfortunately, at the time I downloaded it I did not know I was not supposed to open the .bin file. So, when I double clicked on the .bin file and nothing happened, I stupidly designated a program change under "Properties" and changed it to have the program "NOTEPAD" open the .bin file. I have subsequently figured out how to use the .bin file to update my software. My problem now is that because I changed the .bin file to open using Notepad, no matter how I try I can't change it back to a .bin file. This includes deleting it and downloading it again from the Support page; every time I download it, it still SHOWS up as a Notepad file and not a .bin file. I hope you understand my problem and can help. Thank you.Changing the program it opens with doesn't change anything about the file itself. |

Solve : Dual Boot Setup Problem? |
|
Answer» I used too be able too run EasyBCD and tell it too add a name a Windows Drive that I wanted too my Dual Boot Menu, when Windows started. For some reason though I added, Windows 10, too the option menu but, when I select it not booting into it. EasyBCD v2.2, older one that worked on W7 doesn't work on 8/8.1 or W10 properly. Myself, I no longer use EasyBCD. Instead, I use the boot manager of Windows 10 and boot three versions of Windows. I see the moderator has moved this to Windows 10. Hes is right. This is a Windows 10 issue. Use the boot manager of Windows 10. If you have a the install DVD of Windows 10,l you should be able to fix the problem and not need to o use EaasyBCD. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 01, 2016, 03:41:15 PM I see the moderator has moved this to Windows 10. No, I dowloaded the upgrade and they came out with version 2.3 which, has Windows 10 optionI could be wrong but i believe EasyBCD has to be in place PRIOR to the 2nd OS being installed...not after the fact. They said "You can't boot a newer Windows version using an older Windows bootmgr. e.g. Vista can't boot 7,8,8.1 or 10, 7 can't boot 8, 8.1 or 10 etc. This is because the older bootmgr sees the newer version of winload doesn't have a signature that it recognizes as genuine. bootmgr can only be backward compatible i.e recognize contemporary or older signatures on winload. If you want to dual boot two versions of Windows, you must either boot the drive with the newest version of Windows and add entries for older systems to its BCD, or you can copy the bootmgr from W10 in place of the one on WHICHEVER older version of Windows you are currently trying to boot from." I removed both entries and tried too boot off the Windows 10 drive. I removed both entries now from Windows 7 and tried too bring up the Windows 10 drive and now getting \boot\BCD 0xc0000098 The windows Boot config file Try Visual BCD https://www.boyans.net/Quote from: Computer_Commando on March 05, 2016, 05:06:57 PM Try Visual BCD I never heard of that. Answer» Hello everyone, |

Solve : Moved default downloads folder but have a few issues and questions? |
|
Answer» Because my laptop has limited memory I changed the default download folder to a microSDXC card.
I can guess what you did. Who told you to do it that way? Some programs will still look in the old place. Did you know you can assign a drive to a directory? https://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/dm_drive_letter.mspx?mfr=true The above is for XP. Here is the same for win 10 or 7. http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/f/change-drive-letter.htm Look for where it says: Change Drive Letter and Paths ... Used correctly, it lets you expand your storage as if the first drive became larger. This is like the mount point feature in Linux. Does that help any? I changed it using the following: Admin Command Prompt takeown /f "C:\Windows\System32" /r Then changed the default folder to D:/ I didn't save the website I got that from - I usually do. Was this not a good way to do it? I will look at the link you posted thanks. I suppose I should undo what I did above.Moving and/or changing location of any Windows System folders will stop things from running properly and possibly render the PC un-bootable... The reason you have a Program Files and Program Files(86) folder is LIKELY because your Win ver. is 64 bit...these should also not be moved or renamed... The above is why you are getting errors when launching any .exe's... I would revert all your changes before it stopps running altogether. Have you considered getting a larger HDD for this PC ? ?See inline responses below in red Quote from: danni on March 01, 2016, 01:14:56 AM Okay thanks for the info. I think I'll put it back how it was. D:/ is a 64GB micro SDXC cardYou don't "move" the download folder. You just select a new location to which you want to download and set the option in the browser preferences to always download to that location.Sorry for misunderstanding - when I said I 'moved' downloads folder I meant I changed it's path to a preferred download folder. To revert back to 'Trusted Installer' what do I type in to command prompt? And to answer a previous question - yes my Win ver is a 64 bit. And to answer another previous question - no I hadn't thought of putting a bigger HDD in my laptop because I didn't think that could be done in a laptop. There is space to have another 4GB put in but that's all so I didn't think it was worth the expense for such a SMALL amount of extra memory. As far as I can tell the micro SDXC card is the best option because it gives me an extra 64GB of memory. I just have to learn how to redirect downloads to the micro SDXC card in drive D:/ I purchased this laptop for study only and wasn't too concerned about memory because I have 1T of cloud storage for all my files. However I didn't realise just how small the memory was because it's nowhere near enough just to download all the software I need for my studies. The 4G is RAM...not storage space...you're confusing the 2... Post the full Model # of the laptop and we can recommend what HDD you can get for it. This will solve the free space issues you are having... Is this the ASUS Book Flip you were speaking to Cameron about BTW ? ?If I am confusing the two why doesn't another storage drive show up? And why does it keep telling me I've run out of memory? And why didn't the salesman explain that to me when I asked him about the memory? Instead he sold me the micro SDXC card and told me to use that. Info about my laptop: Serial Number: FANLCX334933446 Product Type: Eee Book Product Name: Asus Transformer Book Flip TP200SA Purchase Date: 29th February 2016 Will installing another hard drive interfere with my warranty because it's only a week old?Ram is 2GB Memory is 28.8GB What I discovered with that command line i typed in it didn't actually change ownership of 'Trusted Installer' It added me as owner and gave me full access and control. |

Solve : Activation? |

Answer» I just installed Windows 10 in a computer with a new hard drive. I used a Microsoft DVD. During installation I was never asked for a license KEY. After installation, I checked activation and it said "Windows 10 is activated with a digital entitlement" What gives? Thanks What copy of Windows did the machine originally ship with? If it had 8 originally then 10 has probably picked up the 8 key from the UEFI and used that to get the free upgrade to 10.Ditto if the machine has had Windows 10 installed before, no need to reactivate when REINSTALLING the same version. There are no Win 10 DVD's...tell us the real story...Recent information. Best of all, you don’t need any product key to download the ISO media file from Microsoft. Just about anyone can download it as long as they have an Internet connection. Though it is important to note that genuine Windows product key will be required for activation purposes during or after installation. The above PROVIDES an ISO file, but STILL a product key will be needed after installation. Solve : Automatic Shutdown Issue after Win 10? |
|
Answer» I have HP TouchSmart 7320 all in one PC which originally came with Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit. tried going back to Win 7 and system worked fineMay I suggest you continue using Windows 7 for awhile. Also, you may wish to download the full ISO of Windows 10 and INSTALL it as a new installation, not as an update. It may be that Windows 10 and not properly register some of your programs you have on Windows 7. Yes, you can shrink a partition and then install Windows 10 as a dual boot thing with both Windows 7 and Windows 10 each on their own partition.. That I what I do. Windows 10 will make the dual boot thing automatically. How to dual boot Windows 10 and older versions of Windows ** After you get WIndo0ws 10 running right, install your favorite programs. ** Important link, bookmark it for reference. |

Solve : Windows 10 Backup? |
|
Answer» Recently, I took the offer of the FREE Windows 10 download to REPLACE Windows 7 that was installed on my computer. Before, I had Windows 7 installed and in two partitions. This was very useful as I always had the option of system restore for any issues (And believe me, for almost every issue that I have had with my computer, and the countless postings on forums, nearly every issued had to be resolved with a system restore. It's a lot of hassle, but it works: you can always try to find out if there is ANOTHER way). |

Solve : Single Threaded? |
|
Answer» I am new to Windows 10 Pro having just purchased a new HP Pavilion with the Intel i7 6700, 16 GB ram, Nvidea Geoforce GT 370 graphics card, 2 TB hard drive. It's only been a few days but noticed what appears to be a somewhat single threaded nature when doing a couple of intensive things that I have not noticed on Windows 7 (old desktop) and Windows 8.1 (laptop). When copying folders with a large amount of files in from an external drive the mouse pointer would freeze. At times I could move it to multi task but the mouse pointer movement was erratic. Most of the time it would not move. Tried Alt tab and Windows key tab to move to another open window and no luck. I am done transferring files but just wondering why that file transfer consumed Windows 10 with multiple CPUs and a ton of memory. If you’ve been using Windows 8 as your main PC, you have probably noticed the vastly upgraded performance and user interface when copying files. Finally, Microsoft DECIDED to revamp some of the core functions of the OS, which makes using Windows 8 so much better than Windows 7…sometimes.The author has some ideas about third party software solutions. The size of the moved files coupled with it being an external HDD on USB speeds would likely cause the lags...It is a completely different PC, so far more - Everything, in fact - was different between it and those other systems. Quote I want my own external drives to backup on that I can unplug and keep safe.OneDrive and other cloud storage solutions are merely one aspect of a data backup. They are not mutually exclusive to backing up to a secondary drive or an external drive. |

Solve : Where do you find Start up menu on Windows 10?? |
|
Answer» I have a program that LOADS up when I turn my computer on. I don't need it to do that and I cannot for the life of me find where the start-up menu is. I've been all over Microsoft searching for it, but I can't even get an explanation there. In the old version, you just click the Start button, scroll down to Startup and whatever is there you don't want, you delete it. What's up with Windows 10? I know I'm not real computer smart, but this should be simple. You can use the Startup Tab in Task Manager to manage Startup Items. It will show items that are starting from a number of locations, not just the Startup folder. How in the world do you know stuff like that???For the saner among us, Computers are means to an end. For me, they are only the beginning. That, and spending most of my waking hours for over ten years now doing SOMETHING on one. But that doesn't sound as profound. |

Solve : windows 10? |

Answer» hello all, "...starting in 2016 windows will make win 10 an automatic recommended update instead of an optional one. Microsoft has not FORCED people to upgrade to 10 yet.... Yes they have been very annoying in the POP ups to get the free upgrade, but you should not all of a sudden one day boot up your computer and have it upgrade to 10 by itself. Please provide exact link where you got this info with exact page that this info is disclosed. Of course Microsoft will not force anyone to change his operating system. Never heard of clapway.com.Quote from: DaveLembke on February 12, 2016, 06:27:30 AM Microsoft has not forced people to upgrade to 10 yet.... Windows 10 Will automatically upgrade, without a direct prompt, starting this month, but the user will have had to have "reserved a free upgrade" previously or they will have had to have chosen the "Start download, upgrade later" option with the GWX Program. One thing i do know,if you revert back to win7 or some other operating system, you had better have a COA sticker or have it wrote down..Cuz BASICALLY all they are doing is reinstalling the prior operating system NOT ACTIVATED..I know me and my friends have been through it already several timesIf you create an image of your existing system, then reverting to it if you change your mind is a VERY simple matter.Quote from: keetoowah on February 15, 2016, 09:20:29 AM One thing i do know,if you revert back to win7 or some other operating system, you had better have a COA sticker or have it wrote down..Cuz basically all they are doing is reinstalling the prior operating system NOT ACTIVATED..I know me and my friends have been through it already several times This is pure bunk...your existing COA becomes the new Win10 COA...and they leave the activation up to the Users... Solve : WIndows deactivated after Update? |
|
Answer» Last nighht after my windows 10 updated,it has started to show a watermark on the lower right hand side to activate windows. Befaore that it was working fine. I am attaching a screenshot of it. Kindly guide me as to what can be done. This copy of Windows was initially upgraded from windows 7 Why is it the Corporate version ? ?I wondered that... I am from India and the Windows 7 version is the one wihch came with the Dell Machine. Even if I install 7 again it would come to this state after the update. And the Dell machine has a certificate of authenticity sticker on the case for the same edition of Windows 7 that was installed on the machine?Machines with corporate Windows LICENSES are sold to companies to be used by employees; if the machine was (legitimately or otherwise) re-sold to a person outside the company, the machinbe may not be able to reach the internal company activation server, and thus the license may no longer be valid, which would explain the failure of activation. Alternatively, the Windows install may have been from an Enterprise disk and falsely activated by a invalid key which has now been detected and deactivated (this often happens with Windows UPDATES.). You could try rolling back to Windows 7 to see what happens. |

Solve : Recycle Bin and Downloads Folder Data? |
|
Answer» Where is the data physically stored, hard drive or RAM? If I let my recycle BIN get loaded with deleted documents and/or never delete documents and software downloaded and stored in my Downloads file, will that slow down my PC if I have plenty of unused capacity on my harddrive? Thanks. Recycle bin is more like a folder that is used as a collection of what should be junk, but its a last chance location for anyone who accidentally deleted a file. Its stored on the hard drive or SSD. ( *files are saved there when deleted unless hard deleted with shift+delete etc. ) One question...why are you letting it get that loaded ? ?...is this a hoarder syndrome ? ? Been almost one year since I worked on my SIL's old PC. She was not able to open any web pages using IE or Chrome without getting long running scripts or other script errors. I discovered 226 photos in her Win 7 Recycle Bin and she uses her Download file to store email attachments. Her PC has very limited RAM (512mb) so I wanted to be sure her Bin and Downloads file were on her harddrive. I installed a new harddrive for her which has plenty of capacity. But, I would say there is an element of hoarding going on for sure as she keeps thousands of old emails on her iPad and Verizon server. I have her HD set to auto defrag and that was OK. I have her IE11 browser set to delete upon exit and I manually deleted temporary files, etc on Chrome. I had to put Chrome on her PC because IE would not let her logon to Verizon webmail. Verizon knows this is an issue for some users but does not have a solution except to use a different browser. I ran Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner and JRT and got clean results. Also ran memtest86 to confirm RAM is ok. I disabled script debugging and script error messages. PC is working now but it is slow as a sloth. It is 12 or so years old and doing about the best it can. Thanks for your responses. |

Solve : Downloading Windows 10? |

Answer» I've been running 10 since they rolled it out. I have an HP Pavilion with 1Terrabyte of memory. It's about two years old. I was updating drivers through the Device Manager and hit a snag when I TRIED to update the IDT sound app. I went to the generic app but the headphones stopped working. The next morning, everything was frozen. Took it in to the local tech geeks. They said Windows 10 was the cause. My "Processors can't handle it". Like I said, I've been running 10 since it came out. They're wiping my hard drive and re-installing 8.1. Everyone I talk to says the tech is crazy. Can I go back to 10 when I get it home? What say you? I've been running 10 since they rolled it out. The tech has limited knowledge of Win10; he can install it, but probably doesn't know much about it & is unaware than Win8.1 has no COA, it's embedded within the BIOS & since you already upgraded, you already have a Win10 digital signature. You can download Win10 1511 as an iso file, then burn it to DVD or USB & run it from within Win8.1. Win10 should automatically activate. Win10 will provide all necessary drivers. I've performed this update on 10 machines without any need to download drivers. Had trouble with 3 performing the upgrade, but finally got them to do it.The tech is clearly incompetent as is far too often the case nowadays. The processor requirements did not change from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and on a 2 year old machine there is certainly no issue with the CPU. There is nothing stopping you from upgrading it to 10 again, just do it the exact same way as before. I'd also suggest not using the same tech in the future.Thank you all for your advice and wisdom. I'll not use the device manager to update drivers if I need to. I will re-install 10 and I WILL find another tech. Thanks again! JIM |

Solve : "No connections are available"; updating drivers doesn't fix? |
|
Answer» For the past week and a half we haven't been able to get on the internet because the computer says no connections are available, when in actuality there are. Tried updating the drivers -- search "drivers," go to "network ADAPTERS," the video I was watching said "just uninstall a RANDOM one" but the computer only has one, Realtek PCle FE Family Controller. Trying to update it/do a hardware update scan yields no results, as it says everything is already updated and working properly. Also tried resetting the router, and nothing. I don't know what to do now. Turning the computer on and off randomly helped in the beginning, but now it stays constant. Please help, I just want to play Dragon Age Inquisition.... (submitting this topic through 4G on my phone.)Do you use a wired (Ethernet cable) or wireless connection? Because from what you've stated it sounds like you have a wireless connection ("no connections are available" rather than "network cable unplugged") but "Realtek PCIE FE Family" is an on-board motherboard Network adapter, which would be an ethernet (wired) adapter. |

Solve : Tunneling ethernet from my computer into my xbox? |
|
Answer» So I have an odd thing I'm trying to do. I want to stream the internet from my computer from the computer's hardware ethernet PORT to the ethernet port of my Xbox. Almost as if the ethernet port on the back of my computer acts as a tiny, one-port router. I want to do this because I want to stream games from my Xbox to my computer which is all well and good except that my router is terrible for that sort of thing, and also rather FAR away. The idea is if I hook the Computer and Xbox directly together through an Ethernet cable, connection should be very much improved. Additionally I havent played with 10 enough yet to test out if it even allows for ICS Internet Connection Sharing. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-internet-connection-sharing#1TC=windows-7 I expect it is still present, but like many of the things in Windows 10, it probably takes twice as many clicks, Like connecting to a VPN. |

Answer» After it shut down ran repair of 7, dont want Win 10 now. Have SOOOO much on this computer I cant LOSE. BUT internet wont work, and of course cant get online to update them. Cannot update anything. Using wife's computer on our hotspot. Quote from: JeffreyJ on January 05, 2016, 08:33:47 AM After it shut down ran repair of 7, dont want Win 10 now. Have SOOOO much on this computer I cant lose. BUT internet wont work, and of course cant get online to update them. Cannot update anything. Using wife's computer on our hotspot. I had the same problem upgrading from 8.1 to 10. While 3rd party software works great anything relating to Windows won't. Can't update, can't use Windows Mail (which is suppose to be good), can't use Windows Defender, and can't use some of the other features of Win10. The problem is with the Proxy, I can't shut it off. I have two other Win10 computers and a Windows tablet that were upgraded from 8.1 to 10 and no problems, just this one which is my main computer. I have tried using MS support but got NOWHERE with them, about the best they could do was TELL me to go into the lan SETTINGS and turn off the Proxy but doing that does nothing because when I close that and then go back there it is the proxy is checked. It just won't turn off. Now I use FOXFIRE and it works great, but still I can't upgrade or update this computer. Why did you run the repair? |
