What was the regulation for voting in the olden days? |
Answer» Early voting(also calledpre-poll votingoradvance polling) is a process by which voters in a public election can vote prior to the scheduledelection day. Early voting can take place remotely, such as viapostal voting, or in person, usually in designated early votingpolling stations. The availability and time periods for early voting vary among jurisdictions and types of election. The goals of early voting are usually to increase voter participation and relieve congestion at polling stations on election day. The categories of people who vote early include those who will be out of the polling area during the election period, poll workers, campaignworkers, people with medical procedures scheduled for that time, and adherents to religious commitments, among others. The numbers of voters who vote early has increased in recent years. As unconditional (no excuse) early voting has gained ground, some critics have condemned the process as damaging to the democratic process. |

10. After the British conquest of Bengal, Calcutta grew froma small village to a big city. Find out about the culture.architecture and the life of Europeans and Indians of thecity during the colonial period. |
Answer» The colonial city of Calcutta was a centre of administration, a port and an European residential enclave. The Europeans were living in high amenity in well-serviced areas. On the other hand, the natives were living in unplanned, congested areas. The Europeans enjoyed bungalows and clubs. They enjoyed race, golf courses, soccer and cricket. They had domestic water supply, proper electricity, sewage links etc. On theother hand the natives lacked these facilities. At a later stage, the city of Calcutta started growing with Europeans towns, growing south and south-west of the Parle Street. Calcutta developed as a cultural city of India. Dramas, Group theaters, Indian classical music, religious and social festivals, etc. enriched its cultural heritage. The people participated and contributed in these events enthusiastically. Bankim Chandra, Rabindra Nath Tagore, etc. were some prominent poets of the colonial age.Calcutta was also known for its cuisine. Rice and macher jhole (fish curry), rasagolla, sandesh, misthi roti, etc. were famous.During colonial period Calcutta had many grand examples of architecture. Some examples ofrecyclable resourcesare newspapers, cardboard, office paper and glass. Some less commonly knownrecyclable resourcesare bricks, asphalt, concrete, oil and sand. Resource recoveryis usingwastesas an input material to create valuable products as new outputs. The aim is to reduce the amount of waste generated, therefore reducing the need forlandfillspace and also extracting maximum value from waste. Resource recovery delays the need to useraw materialsin the manufacturing process. Materials found inmunicipal solid wastecan be used to make new products.Plastic, paper, aluminium, glassandmetalare examples of where value can be found in waste. Resource recovery goes further than just themanagement of waste.Life-cycle analysis(LCA) can be used to compare the resource recovery potential of different treatment technologies. Improvements to administration, source separationand collection, reuseandrecyclingare important. For example, organic materials can be treated withanaerobic digestionand turned into energy, compostorfertilizer. Resource recovery can also be an aim in the context ofsanitation. Here, the term refers to approaches to recover the resources that are contained inwastewaterandhuman excreta(urine and feces). The term "toilet resources" has come into use recently.[1]Those resources include: nutrients (nitrogenandphosphorus), organic matter, energy and water. This concept is also referred to asecological sanitation. Separation of waste flows can help make resource recovery simpler. Examples include keeping urine separate from feces (as inurine diversiontoilets) and keepinggreywaterandblackwaterseparate in municipal wastewater systems. |

Answer» (i)Lying towards the west of the Aravali Hills, the Indian Desert is an undulating sandy plain covered with crescent-shaped and longitudinal sand dunes. This region is characterised by very little rainfall, an arid climate and low vegetation cover. Streams appear only during the rainy season. Luni is the only large river in this region. (ii)The part of the Peninsular Plateau lying to the north of the Narmada River, covering a major area of the Malwa Plateau, is known as the Central Highlands. They are bound by the Vindhya Range from the south and by the Aravali Hills from the northwest. The further westward extension merges with the Indian Desert while the eastward extension is marked by the Chotanagpur Plateau. The rivers draining this region flow from southwest to northeast. The Central Highlands are wider in the west but narrower in the east. (iii)India has two groups of islands. The Lakshadweep Islands lie in the Arabian Sea, to the southwest of the mainland. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in the Bay of Bengal, to the southeast of the mainland. Lakshadweep is composed of small coral islands, covering a small area of 32 square kilometres. Kavaratti Island is its administrative headquarters. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are bigger in size and are more numerous and scattered. The entire group of islands is divided into Andaman (in the north) and Nicobar (in the south). Both these island groups are rich in flora and fauna, and are of great strategic importance to the country. |
