how did Christianity come to India during ancient period write in 40 words |
Answer» According to the faith of the Malayali Syrian Christians(so designated by the Indian government), who prefer to call themselves St Thomas Christians or Nasranis, St Thomas the Apostle came to India in 52AD and converted their forefathers. This is an article of faith and the community will never stop believing it. Infact the very existence of such an ancient community is often claimed as proof. The west disputes this claim because they want control over the church for political reasons. The Pope for example claims authority from the Apostle Peter, in whose name he claims to be the big boss of all christians. The Syrian Christians usually reply that St Thomas gave them authority to be their own boss and tell the Pope to mind his own business. This is a never ending struggle for dominance. Just like there is no solid scientific proof that St Thomas came to India, there is no proof that St Peter went to Rome either. |

owdid the people undeWhy did Gandhiji choose to break the salt lawDiscuss the develonmont |
Answer» The British introduced a law stating that the Government had control over the manufacture and sale of salt. It also imposed a tax on the sale of salt. Mahatma Gandhi and other national leaders felt that it was wrong to impose tax on salt which was an essential commodity for food. The leaders decided to oppose this tax. In 1930, Gandhiji declared that he would lead a march to break the salt law. The Salt March was related to the desire for freedom felt by everyone, the rich and the poor alike. Gandhiji and his followers marched for over 240 miles from Sabarmati to the coastal town of Dandi where they broke the government law by gathering natural salt found on the seashore, and boiled sea water to produce salt. Peasants, tribals and women participated in large numbers. Pamphlets were published on the Salt Satyagraha. |

CHICC4. Why did Britain need indigo? What caused Britain to encourage its cultivation in India? |
Answer» With the the initiation of the Industrial revolution in Britain, the demand for dye also increased. Thus the British forced the plantation of indigo in the Indian soil. Blue Dye was in immense demand in Europe. This compelled the British to push the Indian farmers to produce more indigo instead of the food grains on their lands. This excess cultivation of indigo not only reduced the soil fertility but also made the food grains less available. Moreover, the commercial farming did not help the farmers to earn high profits. The poor farmers were unable to return the loans that were provided to them to begin the indigo farming. To pay back the loans, the peasants borrowed money from the money lenders and got trapped in the debt cycle. Above all the British authorities had given the plantation owners the free hand to oppress the farmers to secure the maximum production. Thus, the exploited peasants rose in revolt. |

5. What do you mean by the Indigo Commission ? |
Answer» Indigo Commissionwas formed following the movement of theraiyatsof Bengal against the Europeanindigo plantersin the late 1850s. From the beginning, indigocultivation in Bengal was associated with coercion and oppression. The planters, when they got the right to own land, used the right to force the raiyats to cultivate indigo, and threatened to enhance rent unless raiyats increased its production. Besides, the planters deprived the raiyats of the due price for the crop. The situation deteriorated all the more in the middle of the 19th century, when the price of indigo fell in the international market, following the fall in the price of gold. The indigo raiyats refused to cultivate indigo, but the planters forced them to continue with the production. This led the raiyats to start organised and violent movement all over Bengal against the indigo planters in 1859. In the face of such a serious movement and public demand for probing the system of indigo cultivation, the government finally appointed the Indigo Commission on 31 March 1860 with WS Seton-Kar as the Chairman |
