what is meant by power of a lens ? you have three lens L1 ,L2, L3 of powers +10D,+5D and -10D respectively . State the nature and focal length of each lens . Explain which of the three lenses will form a virtual and magnified image of an object placed at 15 cm from the lens .Draw the ray diagram in support of your answer

Answer»

★Power of a LENS is the degree of convergence of divergence of light rays achieved by a lens.

**Lens L1 : f1

= +10 cm ; Convex lens

**Lens L2 : f2

= +20 cm ; Convex lens

**Lens L3 : F3

= -10 cm ; Concave lens

★Lens L2 will FORM a virtual and magnified image of an object placed at 15 cm from the

convex lens because concave lens can never form virtual and magnified image of an object and convex lens form such image only when the object is placed between the optical centre and principle focus of the convex lens

Take a spring of medium stiffness, about 20 cm in length. Fix the upper end of the springto a rigid support. On the lower end attach a scale pan of known mass so that the systemhangs vertically. Pull the pan 1-2 cm downwards and release. The pan will oscillate upand down. Measure the time of 20 oscillations with the help of a stop watch and calculatethe time period of oscillation of pan. Now place a middle size pebble on the pan, set it inoscillations and determine the time period of oscillation again. Calculate the mass of thepebble using the data obtained from your observations.

Answer»

Maximum mass that the scale can read, M = 50 kg

Maximum displacement of the spring = Length of the scale, L = 20 cm = 0.2 m

Time period, T = 0.6 s

Maximum force exerted on the spring, F = Mg

where,g = acceleration due to gravity = 9.8 m/s2

F = 50 × 9.8 = 490 N

∴spring constant, k = F/l = 490/0.2 = 2450 N m-1.

Mass m, is SUSPENDED from the balance

WEIGHT of the body = mg = 22.36 × 9.8 = 219.167 N

Hence, the weight of the body is about 219 N.

9.

A block of mass m=2kg with a semicircular track of radius r=1.1m rests on horizontal frictionless surface

Answer»

Answer :-

MOMENTUM is conserved for the system

Pm = PM

( in opposite directions )

mV1 = (m+M) V2

k.E = 1/2 mv^2 ( M' ,= m + M )

so,

√2KmM = √2Km'M'

Km / KM' = M'/m

= KM' = m/ (m+M) ×Km ---------------(I)

Now kinetic energy will be Changed in potential energy

CHANGE in potential energy = MG (r-R) ------(II)

using equation (I) and (ii)

1/2 MV^2 = m/ ( m+m )×(mg (r-R))

V^2 = 2m^2g (r-R) / M ( m+M)

V^2 = 2×10×1.1-.1 / 2×3

=> V = √10/3 Ans.

A man generates a symmetrical pulse in a string by moving his hand up and down. At t=0, the point in his hand moves downwards from mean position. The pulse travels with speed 3 m/s on the string and his hand passes 6 times in each second from the mean position. Then the point of the string at a distance 3 m will reach its upper extreme first time at t=

Answer»

Firstly, we have to draw the pulse wave (see ATTACHED diagram).

If HAND passes 6 times from the mean position in one second, then we know that string CREATES 3 wave lengths (λ) or 3 cycles after 1 second.

That means frequency (F) of the wave is 3 Hz.

Now we can use below equation to calculate the value of wave length.

V = fλ (V = velocity of the wave)

λ = V/f

  = (3m/s)/3 = 1 m

If λ = 1M, the point which have 3m distance is located at no.(6) (in the diagram).

to reach its upper extreme ----> have to travel 3λ/4 distance

time to travel 3λ = 1 second

time to travel λ = 1/3 seconds

time to travel 3λ/4 = (1/3) * (3/4) seconds

                               = 1/4 seconds = 0.25 seconds

Answer :0.25 seconds

Two communicating vessels contain mercury. Thediameter of one vessel is four times larger than the diameter of the other. A column of water of height h0 = 70 cm is poured into the left hand vessel (the narrower one). How much will be mercury level rise in the right hand vessel ? (Specific density of mercury = 13.6)

Answer»

Let us assume that , if the level of narrow tube goes down by h_1 then, WIDER tube goes up by h_2
then, volume DECREASES in CASE of narrow tube = volume increases in case of wider tube

Let RADIUS of narrow tube is r
then, radius of wider tube is 4r

so, \pi r^2h_1=\pi(4r)^2h_2

h_1=16h_2.......(1)

now, pressure at point A = pressure at point B
h\rho g=(h_1+h_2)\rho' g

because specific DENSITY , s = \rho'/\rho
so, h=(h_1+h_2)s

h=16h_2+h_2

h_2=\frac{h}{17s}=\frac{70}{17\times13.6}=0.3

Answer»

The DIRECTION of MAGNETIC field at any location on the Earth's Surface is commonly specified in terms of a 3-dimensional vector.

We use a compass first to DETERMINE the direction of Magnetic North.

The angle of the magnetic north relative to the true north is called the Declination or the Variation.

When we are FACING the Magnetic North, the angle that field makes with the Horizontal is called the Inclination or Magnetic dip.

The Intensity of this field is proportional to the FORCE it exerts on a magnet.

In a closed organ pipe of length 105 cm standing waves are set up

Answer»

Hii dear,

You have posted incomplete question. I have seen similar question somewhere.

# Complete question-
In a closed ORGAN pipe of length 105 centimetres standing waves are setup corresponding to 3rd OVERTONE. What distance from the closed end a PRESSURE NODE is formed?

# ANSWER- 45 cm

# Explaination-

# Given-

L=105cm

# Formula-

For closed organ pipe with length L,

3rd overtone is given by,

λ=4L/7

From closed end pressure node is formed at 3λ/4.

3λ/4 = 3×4L / 7×4

3λ/4 = 3L/7

3λ/4 = 3×105/7

3λ/4 = 45cm.

A particle executing SHM on a line 8 centimetre long its kinetic and potential energy will be equal when its dista distance from the mean position

Answer»

# Answer-

2√2 CM

# Solution-

SHM along a line of 8cm HENCE maximum displacement (amplitude) on each side will be 4 cm.

We have to find the displacement x for which kinetic energy=potential energy

Total energy(E)= potential energy+ kinetic energy.

Hence potential energy = kinetic energy =(1/2)E=(1/2)(1/2)kA^2

where, k is FORCE constant and A is amplitude.

Next, potential energy at displacement x is(1/2)kx^2.

Therefore

(1/2)kx^2=(1/2)(1/2)kA^2

x=A/√2

We have A=4cm

x=4/√2

x=2√2 cm

KE=PE when displacement from mean is 2√2 cm.

What is motion what is motion what is motion what is motion

Answer»

Answer:

In physics, motion is the change in the position of an object over time. Motion is MATHEMATICALLY described in terms of displacement, distance, velocity, acceleration, speed, and time. The motion of a body is OBSERVED by attaching a frame of reference to an OBSERVER and measuring the change in position of the body relative to that frame.

If the position of an object is not changing relatively to a given frame of reference, the object is SAID to be at rest, motionless, immobile, stationary, or to have a constant or time-invariant position with reference to its surroundings. As there is no absolute frame of reference, absolute motion cannot be determined.[1] Thus, everything in the universe can be considered to be in motion.[2]:20–21

Motion applies to various physical SYSTEMS: to objects, bodies, matter particles, matter fields, radiation, radiation fields, radiation particles, curvature and space-time. One can also speak of motion of images, shapes and boundaries. So, the term motion, in general, signifies a continuous change in the positions or configuration of a physical system in space. For example, one can talk about motion of a wave or about motion of a quantum particle, where the configuration consists of probabilities of occupying specific positions.

The main quantity that measures the motion of a body is momentum. An object's momentum increases with the object's mass and with its velocity. The total momentum of all objects in an isolated system (one not affected by external forces) does not change with time, as described by the law of conservation of momentum. An object's motion, and thus its momentum, cannot change unless a force acts on the objects.

Unpolarised light of intensity 32 wm–2 passes through three polarisers such that the transmission axis of the last polariser is crossed with first. If the intensity of the emerging light is 3wm–2, the angle between the axes of the first two polarisers is

Answer»

intensity after first POLARISER = 32/2 = 16 W m-2

let angle between 1st and 2nd polariser is THETA so intensity = 16 {cos(theta)}^2

angle between 2nd and 3rd = 90-theta

so intensity   3 Wm-2 = 16 {cos(theta)}^2 * { cos (90-theta)}^2

3 = 4 { 2COS (theta) * sin(theta) }^2

3/4 = { sin (2*theta)}^2

squrt(3) / 2 = sin (2*theta)

sin 60 = sin (2*theta)

2*theta = 60

theta = 60/2 = 30 degree

angle is of 30 degree between first two polarisers.

Sunita takes a mirror which is depressed at the centre and mounts it on a mirror stand. An erect and enlarged image of her face is formed. She places the mirror on a stand along a meter scale at 15 cm mark. In front of this mirror, she mounts a white screen and moves it back and forth along the meter scale till a sharp, well-defined inverted image of a distant tree is formed on the screen at 35 cm mark.(i) Name the mirror and find its focal length.(ii) Why does Sunita get sharp image of the distant building at 35 cm mark?

Answer»

i) The mirror USED by Sunita is Concave mirror as she GETS her image of face   as erect and enlarged.

Only concave mirrors can PRODUCE virtual  and erect image when object is placed in between POLE and FOCUS.

ii) As a distant object which is regarded as placed At infinity,  image is formed well defined and sharp at 35cm.

hence focal length of the mirror is 35cm.[ Because concave mirror will form image at focus when object is placed at infinity.]

To study the effect of heat on ice by using a graph

Answer»

We know there are usually three types of heat used in everyday life to understand physical phenomena.
Heat , LATENT heat of FUSION and latent heat of vaporisation.

Q = mS∆T , when substance doesn't change its PHASE , then it must be change their temperature. then, this temperature is directly proportional to supplied heat .

so, when we supply heat to ice , ice increase there remember from - T to 0°C .
you can see variation of temperature and heat in graph .

when substance change its phase at constant temperature is used new terms e.g,. latent heat. ice at 0°C change into water at this temperature. heat supplied to ice is known as latent heat of fusion.
here , in case of charging phase , heat is independent on temperature.
so, graph is parallel to x axis as shown in figure.

now, if we supply heat to water, temperature of water increase . then, again heat is directly proportional to temperature.

now, I think you understand how we plot graph of ice between heat and temperature.
