Write a Diary entry each day for a month and compile them into a book. You may also name your diary as Anne Frank did. |
|
Answer» 1st February, 2018 Dear Kibu, Being the first day of the month, I went to the temple before going to school. I asked God to be with me, guide and lead me this month. I cannot forget the morning assembly. It was about Mother Theresa. The theme was Help the Needy. Time is fleeting. I must focus in my studies and get good marks. I must aim to be a doctor and help the needy. 2nd February, 2018 Dear Kibu, Today I had the opportunity to go by the metro with my mom. The station was spic and span. There weren’t many commuters. Most of them were decent and disciplined. I could not find anyone littering the area. There was orderliness while buying the tickets. The announcements were meticulous. The doors opened and shut automatically. We realized that the mobile phones weren’t working inside the station. What amazed me was the time taken to travel even long distances! I doubt anyone would commute to far off places by buses when metros take us at short time. 3rd February, 2018 Dear Kibu, My exam, starts tomorrow and I’m slightly scared. Tomorrow is my first exam. French isn’t tough for me. However, I’m so anxious these dayscause I want to get the first mark. Until my Math exam is over, I won’t be able to breathe properly. I have always had a very sound sleep and now I’m sleepless! I am sure I can overcome the stress and do pretty well with systematic studies, meticulous revision and God’s help. |

Which one of the following does not exist? (i). `XeOF_4` (ii). `NeF_2` (iii). `XeF_4` (iv). `XeF_6` |
| Answer» Correct option is (ii), `NeF_2` does not exist as the sum of first and second ionisation enthalpies of `Ne` are much higher than `Xe`. As a result `F_2` cannot oxidise `Ne`. On the other hand `XeF_4`,`XeF_6`,`XeOF_4` do exist. | |

Arrange the following in the order of property indicated for each set: (i). `F_2,Cl_2,Br_2I_2-` increasing bond dissociation enthaply. (ii). `HF,HCl,HBr,HI`- increasing acid strength. (iii). `NH_3,PH_3,AsH_3,SbH_3,BiH_3-` increasing base strength. |
|
Answer» (i). Bond dissociation entalpy: `I_(1)ltF_(2)ltBr_(2)ltCl_(2)` Down the group `(darr)` i.e., `F_2` to `Cl_2`, bond dissociation enthalpy should decrease with the increase in bond distance or length for `F_2` to `I_2`. Howerver, the bond dissociation enthalpy of `F_2` is smaller than that of `Cl_2` and even that of `Br_2`. This is dye to the fact that F atojm is very small and hence the three lone pairs of electrons on each F repel the bond pair holding the F-atoms in `F_2` molecule. (ii). Acid sthrength: `HFltHClltHBrltHI` The relative acid strength of hydraacids depends on their bond dissociation entalpies As the size of atom increases from F to I the bond strength decreases from `H-F` to `H-I` and hence bond dissociation enthalpies decreases from `H-F` to `H-I`. Hence the acid strength increases from `H-F` to `H-I`. (iii). Base strength: `BiH_3ltSbH_3ltAsH_3ltPH_3ltNH_3` Due to presence of lone pair of electrons on the central atom in `NH_3`,`PH_3`,`AsH_3`,`SbH_3` and `BiH_3`, all behave as lewis bases. Down the group, i.e., from `NH_3` to `BiH_3`, the size of the central atom increases hence lone pair occupies a larger bolume. Consequently the electron density on the central atom decreases and Lewis base strength decreases from `NH_3` to `BiH_3`. |

An aircraft is flying at height 3600 m from the ground. If the angle subtended at the ground observation point by aircraft positions 10 s apart is 30º, what is the speed of the aircraft?(Given Answer= 60*Pi m/s) |
|
Answer» Solution: The aircraft takes 10s to go from one point (say A) to the other (say B) and AB subtends an angle of 30o at the point of observation (say O) .So, ABO forms a triangle.Now let OC be perpendicular bisector drawn from O to AB(i.e. actually the height). Then in right trianle, OAC AC = OC tan 15o = 3600 x 0.2679 = 964.44 m so, AB = 2 x 964.44 = 1928.88 m Now, the speed of aircraft , v = AB / t = 1928.88 / 10 = 192.888 m/s. |
