Solve : How to Block (Deny) USB Drive/ USB Stick Access in Win 7 ??

Answer»

I am Administrator of Win7.
Then i want to "block" another users from using their "USB Sticks" because of Virus problems.

Is there anyway:

  • To enable/disable the access, anytime without having to reboot?

Sorry for my careless eyes.
Ok i'm going for it.
But.. it is really complex EXPLANATION there. Also the references links are NOT FOR WIN7. I mean, GPO settings are different with WIN7.

I would like to know with simple steps, if it possible please.  Quote

Solve : While playing a fullscreen game, the window will minimize on its own?

Answer»

Hello everyone. I have been playing a PC GAME called league of legends for a while now, and have not had any problems until recently. When the game starts and I'm in full screen mode, it will automatically minimize every 5-10 MINUTES and take me back to my desktop. I've tried closing every other application running, ran a virus scan with malwarebytes and superantispyware, restarted my computer, but still, the PROBLEM has not resolved itself. Any idea what this might be and how to fix it? Thanks!

I am running windows 7 64 bit, AMD Phenom II X4 955 Processor 3.2ghz, 4 gigs of ram, Directx 11, ATI Radeon HD5700When was the last time you cleaned your machine? Is this a desktop machine? Try pulling the cover and look inside to see if the fan on the video card is working ok. It maybe over heating.

i just cleaned it after reading your post; the fan seems to be working fine. i'm starting to wonder maybe it's a monitor problem? i guess if no solution arises i will reinstall windows and see if the problem perisists.

Can I change what happens when I click the Power button on my computer?

By default, Windows puts your computer to sleep when you click the Power button. However, you can change the default setting so that clicking the button causes your computer to sleep, hibernate, or shut down. (Any changes you make will also apply to the physical power button on the computer itself.) To change the default setting:

Open Power Options by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Power Options.

On the Select a power plan page, click Change plan settings under the selected plan.

On the Change settings for the plan page, click Change advanced power settings.

On the Advanced settings tab, expand Power buttons and lid, expand Start menu power button, and then do one of the following:

If you are using a mobile PC, click On battery or Plugged in (or both), click the arrow, and then click Sleep, Hibernate, or Shut Down.

If you are using a desktop computer, click Setting, click the arrow, and then click Sleep, Hibernate, or Shut Down.

Click OK, and then click Save changes.

Do you know what was on that partition?  I suspect that partition was the recovery partition put there by the manufacturer.  So, now, you no longer have your recovery partition in case you need to restore your system to it's original configuration. Right, but I get the impression he's not aware of what he may have deleted.  So, a little educating here. If he upgraded his OS, to a newer version, the information on that old partition is useless anyway.
Or if he's doing whole partition backups on a regular basis, again that restore part is totally redundant.

There are several programs that do a great job of removing, resizing and creating new partitions.
The one suggested by Transfusion is as good as they get.
With any Partition Manager program, it's a good idea to let it make the Emergency Restore CD.
Then always run the program from that Bootable CD and not from within windows.
In fact, once the program is on a CD, the program can be UN-Installed from the HD.

Cheers Mates!

Well no, that's not really TRUE. The image on the recovery partition could still be used to restore the system to its original state.

i searched google about the error. it is related to HDD
my HDD is 500GB sata II sumsung.
i explain how i get the error
1. i boot windows 7 dvd and start installing windows 7 properly.
2. it does copy installation filels without any problem then it does first rebooting easy
3. nothing happend in second step ( installation windows).it reboots properly.
4. it starts loading windows for doing NEXT operation. after a few seconds, i get the error.
Clik Here...if i remember correctly someone in the CHAT had an eerily similar problem with an Amilo computer and a SATA HARD drive...

You might want to try hooking up the sata drive up to another computer and run Testdisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/testdisk) to check for bad sectors. If any physical damage has been caused prior to the failed installation please post here.

i will try this too.
i have installed windows xp pro sp3 on it without problem and it works well.

Solve : computer recomendations?

Answer»

ok so im gettig a new laptop for my birthday and i want to know what kind should i get. i play minecraft alot and my computer isnt fit for the job. so i was wondering wat kind of mhz/ghz i should be looking for also how much RAM i need ALONG with cpu please helpWell, have you done a Google to find more about Minecraft ?
Maybe you also look here:
ttp://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki
Somewhere I saw the game was coded in Java.Maybe that doesn't mean much to you, but it may mean that real high def graphics are not needed.take a look: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=32

how much you envision the laptop to cost you?

Minecraft isn't a particularly demanding game. Here are the minimum and recommended system requirements for it. As long as whatever you get meets or exceeds these requirements, you should be fine. If you're a gamer, just stay away from Intel video chipsets. They'll run some games, but not most very well. I'd recommend getting a laptop with an ATI or Nvidia video chipset if you're going to game on it.

Minimum:
OS: Windows XP/Vista/7
OpenGL: 1.4
Processor: 2.0 MHz (Single Core)
RAM: 1 GB(XP), 1.5 GB(7), 2.0 GB(Vista)
Hard Drive: 80 MB Free
Video: 128MB RAM

Recommended:
OS: Windows XP/Vista/7
OpenGL: 2.0
Processor: 2.5 MHz (Single Core)
RAM: 2 GB(XP), 3 GB(Vista/7)
Hard Drive: 256 MB Free
Video: 128MB RAMMy desktop:

Q8200 4 cores 2.33Ghz
8GB DDR2 RAM
NVidia 9800GT

Runs Minecraft at about 700fps according to fraps- only 40 according to the minecraft's F3 DEBUG screen.

My laptop:

Satellite L300
T3200 2 cores 2.00ghz
4GB RAM
Linux Mint 10 and Windows 7 dual boot
Intel Media Accelerator (forget the specific model)

is playable, but has huge drops in framerate during chunk updates (that is, while night is falling or dawn), as well as when GENERATING new chunks. THe way it plays on my laptop, I wouldn't recommend getting a machine with specs less than that; however, my laptop is also like 3 years old and probably less powerful than most laptops you can get today.

Generally speaking minecraft's speed is more CPU-bound than GPU-bound (graphics) because the graphics aren't fancy or use shaders and all that. Another important concern could be Hard drive speed, but as long as you don't get a 5400RPM drive it should be fast enough, and I/O only becomes a problem if you EXPLORE a lot of the world and generate a large number of chunks.
the asus G73/X77 series looks nice:http://usa.asus.com/Notebooks/Gaming_Powerhouse/G73Jw/#specifications

I have yet to find an offical asus.com website for the X77.

The Intel mobile core 2 duo line, especially anything below a T6570, is generally obsolete when compared to the i3 line now...

Solve : usb not recognised?

Answer»

Hi
Suddenly for no reason the photo card reader that I attach to my computer via a USB does not work and it said the usb port is not recognised.
I have done everything including (advice from windows) uninstalling &reuploading the usp programme;  trying a windows patch, buying a new card reader (which ALSO does not work) - and trying other usb ports on the machine (doesn't work) .

However the usb ports do  work with other pieces of equipment (ie mouse, keyboard ETC). Just not the card readers.
And when I try the card readers on another computer they are fine!

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Tara

How about USB flash drives or External hard drives? Is Windows able to detect them?Same problem with me, specially to generic brands of card readers, flash drives, etc. But if I inserted well known brands like SanDisk, Imation, Kingston, Transcend, Western Digital, Seagate, Buffalo, etc no problem

But beware of Kingston and SanDisk, there are LOTS of fake in black market. Other imitation electronic devices are made from Taiwan: "CD-R King"Well, I encountered a similar problem in the past. I would suggest checking the BIOS (press Del. or F2 during Startup). You should make sure that all USB ports are enabled as well as that USB 2.0 Mode and USB Legacy Support are enabled.

In my case, the front USB ports were not enabled for some reason, which caused all USB devices not to work when connecting them to these two ports.

Solve : msg command : I can't send LAN message to my colleague?

You can try :

http://www.messengertown.com/2010/11/30/sofros-lan-messenger-download.htmlSetting up a Jabber server is a great option for the corporate environment.  The Windows MESSAGING option is no longer viable in most contexts, because the service is disabled by default on Microsoft's latest operating systems (good thing too).  I remember the netsend command in XP... we had a fantastic time fooling around with it.

Solve : trouble starting vista?

How do I find out why my slideshow isn’t working any more?
Are you able to fix your start-ups issue? Were you able to backup previously installed files on that PC? If not, then you will really have a problem viewing those pictures. For Vista and Win 7 use Windows Sidebar and gadgets .My files are always intact when I use the recovery DVD. One day I was gonna view my pictures with my slideshow and the slideshow wouldn’t work.

More details...
What is this slideshow app...built in Windows feature...or 3rd party PROGRAM ? ?The slide show is the slide show that came with windows. It just says “An error is preventing this slide show from playing”
Are you able to fix your start-ups issue? Nope Please post your computer model/specs. and all your installed protection software(ANTIVIRUS, spyware, firewall and real-time scanners).

On what part shown on the screen do this happen? TRY running check disk on your system drive.
1. Open Windows explorer and right-click your C: drive
2. Choose Properties and select Tools.
3. On Error checking, click Check Now...
4. Use one option or place checkmark on either options.
Do step 4 twice by placing one checkmark on a.)  fix system errors  b.)  scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
5. Hit Start and wait for the operation to finish.
See this thread http://blog.jtbworld.com/2008/02/error-is-preventing-this-slide-show.html on how some users were able to solve their slideshow issues.I ran check disk that went well. What was I looking for? I also ran defrag a few nites ago. Slide show still doesn’t work.

Have you tried copying the destination pictures from where your viewing the photos to another folder/directory and then setting again picture slideshow?
The given link also mentioned setting power options to balanced or high performance. I did see the info on the power options and tried that, had no affects for me.

Solve : Suggested printers list?

Answer»

Win7 Enterprise

When I add a network PRINTER, it GIVES me a list of suggested printers (about 20). I have more printers than these, and they are all on the same server. There is no apparent rhyme or reason to the list: they are not the most commonly installed or used printers, they are not the first 20 alphabetically, etc.

Is there a way to MANAGE which of the network printers pop up in this list? I would like to manually assign the more commonly installed printers to appear on this list. Right now many of the printers on the list are seldom used, while some printers that nearly everyone will need to install do not appear.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-darrylLook on the server that you are sharing the printer from for a check box that says List in the DIRECTORY. It should be on the share tab in the properites page for the printer.

Hi all!  I have Windows7 Home Premium.  My Windows Media Player has crashed.
I've gone to Windows to get it.  They say Windows Player 12 can't be used for
Windows 7 users and we must download their 'Windows Media Pack'.

That's OK with me, but it downloads - then comes up and says "Windows Standalone
Installer is not applicable to your computer".  I click OK and that's it.

I've tried 3 times.

I can't download Windows Media Player 11 because its for XP only?  Or can I?if you have system restore active, you can try restoring your system to the point before the crash HAPPENED (if you can) and SEE if it fixes the problem?

"Windows Standalone Installer is not applicable to your computer" means the installer won't work with your computer and you can't install it.I do not know if it will alter your current issue. However there was a recent Win 7 update of SP 1. Have you installed that on your computer? If not do the download and see if it alters your outcome. truenorthI'd try an older version. I've never used Windows Media Player 11 on Windows 7 before but it doesn't hurt to try. Make sure the previous version of Windows Media Player is uninstalled off the computer. Check in Control Panel > PROGRAMS > Programs and Features.

And I've had problems in the past with Windows Media Player. Even now, on my other computer, it won't let me play avi videos so I USUALLY watch them on Media Player Classic or VLC Media Player. (I just use it for listening to music.) So if you still have problems, look into trying out other media players to save you the headache.Actually i THINK Truenorth may be onto something here...Take a look at one of these sites, they seem to say windows media player 11 can be installed on windows 7, if that's what you want to try.

sure, though ... truenorth may be getting somewhere faster ....

Solve : Vista & Windows 7 conflict. - Is there any ???

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 - 20 N system. It came with Vista and I then installed Windows 7. I have not been able to download SP 1 . I get a variety of error messages. I am sick of it and yesterday I reinstalled W 7, thinking that I would get rid of the dreaded Vista ............ It seems not. Can anyone WALK me through the procedure of properly formating the HD? Is it really necessary??Did you upgrade from vista to 7?
To (quick) format the HDD, use the 7 boot disk, delete all partitions, and then create new partitions as you wish.EXACTLY how did you install Windows 7?Most likely your problem was not the operating system.

You should not have any problem  installing  Windows 7. However, many people have Toshiba laptops with Vista and do not have problems.  More likely scenario is that something happened ed to your laptop that is not typical and is not due to weakness of them Operating System.

If the Toshiba began to fail inside the warranty period, you shoddily have reported it to the manufacture. Even now, getting help from them is your first option to investigate.

If another PC is available, of if a friend will help, you can get a memory diagnostic software to test the memory. And there are other tools ti test the hard drive. Motherboard failures will also show up in either memory or hard drive tests.
The point being made is is this: There r is no evidence that euros on Toshiba
laptops are caused by the Vista OS. You assumption was, apparently,  wrong.

As to formatting the hard drive, that is a carry over from about TEN  years ago.Back then it was used to 'repair' failing  drives. Noways It is done to mainly to remove unwanted files from the files system. The quick format option does this.
Thank you all

Geek ??

I think that your summation is probably correct - The Vista OS is not the cause of the problem.

However I have reinstalled W7 and have to go through all the pain of installing programs.

Do you advise me to carry on, or do a full format first or take your advise and carry on?

I live a long way from a Toshiba agent so will follow up on the hardware checks on the internet

I await your response. Thanks
The full format should not be needed. But, if your system can go through a full format without a crash, that wound be encouraging. That would lead you to think it was a 'glitch' that went away. Maybe a hole in the ozone layer, or something like that.
Suggestion. Do not try to format the whole thing. format less than half the drive, or a minimum if 12 GB for Windows 7. It will go faster, less likely to fail. Later use the remaining area for a data partition(s) as you like. You know that My Documents can go on another partition.
If it turns out that the hard drive is failing, using smaller partitions is none workaround I have used. Sometimes you may have to skip the first 500 MB of a drive if the bad sectors are in that area. But based on my own observations, laptop drives, when the go bad, go really bad.
Now it it is the hard drive, that is GOOD news. A replacement drive for a Toshiba is a fraction of the price of the machine when it was new. A new hard drive does wonders for a laptop. Make sure you get one that is a very close replacement. I believe you can use the same caddy(tray) for a new hard drive.
Thanks Mr (Prodigy) Geek

It was really good to be to actually get a response to one of my questions.

I will stop meddling and move on.

I have other issues that I need to learn about, so will be back to the site again.

Bye the way, I have tried various free security systems..... Found Avg not to0 intrusive but felt that the changing form one to another left remants behind which caused conflict. This time, I downloaded MSE. It seems a little slow. What do you advise??

Regards

JohnI am using MSE now. I ,had my doubts, so I just did two scans using bookable AV software. Both scans turned up noting. So MSE appears to be on the job. some tings SEEM slow, but that is to be expected for a vigilant AV program. It does not affect my ability to watch full screen movies, and my graphics a not so great. This is my Dell laptop I use in t the house. After summer is over, I will move back out to the barn where I have two desktops.
I have had good results with AWG, Avast, Alvira and even PCTools. This is the first time I have used MSE and am surprised that it does the job  well. I mean, how could anything good come from a city named Redmond.   The only question here is if your laptop is upgradeable to win 7 and the drivers are available once OS is installed. Solve : cant connect to my ftp server(IIS7) via the internet but it works on local netwo?

Answer»

I have a issue i can connect to the IIS ftp service on my Local Network 192.168.x.xx but if i TRY to connect to it externally 80.xxx.xxx.xxx (through internet) i get the 425 error i'm using a 2xxx portinstead of the port 21 normally used for ftp(security reasons) added the exception to Zone Alarm(might have done it incorrectly) AND to my router (portforward) but all have no effect. turning ZA of prevents me from even connected to the ftp locally but if its turned on locally atleast works tried passive and active client SETTINGS using fireftp and android app called"fileExpert"both WORK locally but not over the internet...http://support.microsoft.com/kb/129395That did not really help at allFTP error 425 is a socket error. This means that the client can't OPEN a data connection. You have a FIREWALL problem which is not letting the client open the 2nd port needed for FTP to transfer the data. This gives your client a 425 error.

Try to make sure your firewall is setup for port 21 and the client is using pasv mode.

Microsoft doesn't like non-standard ports. If you want a FTP server to work with another port number you need to look at another FTP server software.

Solve : Built in microphone on dell vostro A860?

Answer»

Hello guys

I am confinced this model has a built-in MICROPHONE, this is for a FRIEND of mine so i don't have the actual laptop here yet.

But, she cannot even find it, LET alone use it.
So if it does have one, would it be in "device manager" and i would have to ENABLE the device, so she could use this.

At the moment, she is using a head-set, but she would also like to use the built in microphone.
The default microphone is the headset at the moment, which is the only one showing up when you right click the speaker icon, and click on recording.

Windows vista home basic...right click on the speaker in the bottom right corner, select Recording Devices, If it is not listed there, right click in a blank spot and select Show Disabled Devices, Right click on it if it shows up and click EnableThanks cruisin702

I'll try that later on, i take it this laptop has a built in microphone, i done a search about it, and it should have one, this friend of mine has been using the laptop for a year now thinking it doesen't have one.

Selecting "show disabled devices"  if nothing shows up, does this mean it does not have a built in microphone.I believe it should have one, I cant say for sure if it does or doesn't.The Dell website mentions absolutely nothing about a built in MIKE on this model....it does mention a mic jack and speaker out jack... Solve : Display Driver Errors?

Answer»

I'm using a brand new Dell Inspiron 1545 windows 7 LAP top. Frequently, while I'm using it the screen flashes on and off and my windows open and close, then I get a POP up in the bottom RIGHT corner that says "display driver has stopped responding but has recovered." Sometimes the issue resolves itself, and i can continue using it after a few seconds (5-10) of flashing. Other times, My computer freezes and I have to reboot. A lot of times the issue happens right when i log in. The issue also happens while im using my computer. ANy help would be appreciated. Thank youIt MAYBE a problem with video chip itself.
Since it's a laptop, it could be a serious issue, since it can't be cheaply replaced.

Solve : Possible to Get Compatible Display for Win 7 on Older PC??

Answer»

I have successfully installed Win 7 Hm Premium on a 3 yr old Gateway 564GE, with on board graphics only.  Of course, this is a relatively new Intel Chipset.  I installed the same O/S on a 5 yr old Dell 2400, with absolutely no difficulties of any kind - until i began running certain programs.  The only screen resolution I can employ is 640 x 480, 16 bit color.  The resolution of course is not great, but generally adequate for routine, noncritical graphical purposes.  The problem is that, in the case of certain applications, the screen display characters and graphics are so large that required access to necessary buttons and controls is impossible.  I have 3 available PCI slots, and I can easily find a video card sufficient to give me the required resolution (I believe I could get by with 1024 x768).  However, all the cards I have located require a power supply rated at least 250 to 350 watts, and of course, the Dell has a romping, stomping 200 watts.  I'm reluctant to replace the PSU in such an aging machine, out of concern for unforeseen problems/conflicts with the motherboard after such a replacement.  Is there any external fix for this - such as an externally powered graphics card?  It's not absolutely necessary that I upgrade this old machine to Win 7, but it runs so well on the machine (except for the graphics), that I'd like to do it if economically feasible.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.I'm afraid on a Dell 2400, what you see is what you get...
Post the full specs...but i doubt it'll get much better...especially if it's a Celeron...Thanks for contributing to the cause, PATIO.  I wouldn't spend a second trying to upgrade any Celeron powered PC.  This is a 2.66 mhz P4, with 1.5 gb RAM, and new, midsize (320 gb) Hd Drv.  For an old unit, it's okay.  I really don't mind getting an inexpensive ($40 to $60) video card.  But as stated above, I'm hesitant to undertake replacement of the PSU.  Since the PSU is so underpowered, I haven't come up with an alternate route.Unfortunately adding a vid card will require a new PSU...perhaps you'll find some happy medium there...Will a standard ATX power supply fit in that Dell?  If so, here's a low cost PSU that might interest you:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171046

And, a video card suggestion:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16814187042Soybean:

Thanks so much for both suggestions.  I'll check them out.Especially for Soybean & Patio (but also for any others who may be interested):

After thinking about this, and exploring all options, I remembered that I had an old, unused Compaq XP machine which USES an NVIDIA GX 5200 PCI card.  This is not the more recent GX FX 5200 card.  It is probably 5 or 6 years old.  I took the card out of the Compaq, installed it in the Dell 2400, and it gives me all the resolution I need - up to 1440 x 900.  So far, it appears that the power supply is not being overtaxed, but time will tell.  I have tried (unsuccessfully) to find documentation on this card in order to verify PSU requirements - so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed.

Again, thanks for all the helpful suggestions.A good low-cost solution...well done !

Solve : Lost internet connection?

Answer»

Tried to install Nod32 ANTIVIRUS; had to remove preloaded Norton antivirus trial; when Norton was uninstalled, we lost internet connection.  DSL coming in does work on a separate laptop we tried.  Seems to be a problem within the computer.  Tried system restore - didn't work.  Tried to have computer diagnose the problem - could not resolve problem.  Under network and sharing center, there is a red "X" before the globe.  Any ideas?  Did you use the Norton Removal Tool ? ?I followed the uninstall instructions on the NOD32 download.  Then I WENT to the Norton site under "Programs" and clicked "uninstall".Run the removal tool and re-boot.Since I uninstalled Norton, I can't run anything for Norton.  Since I don't have the internet connection, I can't get the Norton removal tool.  Seems to be a MUCH bigger problem - somehow the computer is not reading the connection to the internet.  I have made some calls to have an "expert"who is gonna take the computer and to try to fix it.  Thanks for trying to help me out of this mess.Make sure you have uninstalled all the security software and try to connect to a different Inet connection if possible. if it works, it just the SETTINGS for your DSL provider you have missed. could be set to a specific IP.  DO NOT connect to the internet after removing all security software - that is terrible advice.you can try unistalling the NIC (network interface card) and rebooting you system. the driver will reinstall after the reboot

Does this mean your account password, or your product key to activate Vista?

ANYWAY, I had a similar problem a while ago, and it was because I was USING two anti-virus software products at the same time. If that is the case for you as well, uninstall one. If that is not the case, you should look into testing your computer's memory. I PERSONALLY use Memtest 86+ (which is free). Google it to find out how to run it.It is to "open"my account....(The code you fill in with your "pic."above it.).

Solve : "Windows Explorer has stopped working" loop?

Answer»

Last night in the midst of trying to open a document to send to a friend, I get a pop up saying the above. I click it off, and it goes away....for a few seconds, then pops back up, over and over. I'm currently on the guest account, stuck with trying to figure out how to fix this. I've tried a system restore, which unfortunately did not work, my task manager is not working for me, and I've restarted my laptop countless times. I'm just wondering what I would need to do to get this message to keep from looping all the time? Have you tried booting into safe mode? Usually this is done by pressing F8 REPEATEDLY during boot-up until you are given a choice of what you want to boot into. CHOOSES Safe-Mode and see if the crash persists. So the PROBLEM does not occur in the guest account? What happened just before the problem arose (NEW sw, error, virus, etc)?I've tried to boot it in safe mode, but every time I do, it pops up and goes away like the message i'm having problems with. I haven't had any recent problems, i've done multiple virus scans, so I'm not sure what could have caused it.So you can boot to a guest account but not to safe mode? Now that's odd. Have you RUN a scan with MalwareBytes and / or Super AntiSpyware in addition to your av?

Solve : Can't put icon in the taskbar?

Answer»

hello everyone,
I was arranging my icons on my taskbar and deleted them. I thought no big problem, I'll just drag them back from my desktop. I have the taskbar unlocked, and when I click on the handle to drag it to the right to make room for the icons it doesn't move. In the taskbar start menu, the quick launch doesn't stay checked. When I right click on the taskbar>tools> quick launch, I can't check the quick launch. I'm not having any issues. I did a system restore to no avail. That seldom works for anyone, but it seems we always do it. Obviously, I must have done something wrong, because when I deleted them, I deleted them all at once. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

USE the search box and search for "Quick Launch" (Use the quotation marks). It should be
 C:\users\(your username)\appdata\roaming\microsoft\internet explorer\quick launch
This is the folder your shortcuts NEED to be in, drag them there, maybe that will help.

Edit: No need to drag them there, I just REALIZED if you right click on a shorcut on your desktop there is an option to "Add to Quick Launch" . Just check to make sure you have the folder.thanks Cruisin 702,

Solve : Partial uninstall failure?

Answer»

My machine is an HP Presario C700 running 32 bit Vista. I upgraded to 2G ram last year.

The problem started around Thanks giving when I un-installed a recently installed weather channel application. On the advice of another I downloaded Revo un-installer and tried again.(I like the Revo tool better than window's deal).
The problem persists. Every fifteen minutes or so error message 126 pops up with;

" Unable to load library wfxw.dll. Attempted to load C:\Program Files\The Weather Channel FW\Screensaver\wxfw.dll. Error code: 126".

There is no icon in either un-install app so I tried Malwarebytes anti malware tool and FOUND some problems, unfortunately not "the" problem.

I Peeked around in DOS a little but can barely find my way around.

Any thoughts are appreciated.  It is just a little bug that I would prefer to live without.

Sincere regards

Install the weather channel thing again.
Next UNINSTALL it using the windows method.
Might work.you could also try the windows uninstaller. It sometimes PICKS up on things left behind with uninstalls.

how do i ARRANGE FILES by type in the same folder? could do it in XP, but i cant seem to FIGURE out how in 7

thanks    Don't understand - just sort on "type". Of course you need to make sure "hide extensions for known file types" isn't checked.well then i must be really missing SOMETHING. i see no 'sort' option    Just click on "type" at the top of that column. It's exactly the same as every other version of Windows. Or right-click and choose "sort by..."well that answer led me to look again. you can only do that if the folder is set to 'details'. i had it on medium icons, and that option is not available.

thanks for the lead. can sort now.

Sorry - I ALWAYS use "details" and never thought you'd be doing otherwise In other views, you can right click a blank area of the folder and select sort by->Item type.

Solve : Html locked?.?

Answer»

I have noticed since installing windows 7 all my html pages for my websites seem locked, I cannot change them at all in ORDER to update my pages.
I used to just right click view source update then save to UPLOAD etc.
I also noticed now there are line numbers down the left side and there are many different coloured fonts does anyone know what would cause this?.
Not sure if it is windows 7 related/ bug related or because I have transferred these files from my other computer.

Help really appreciated.
MarkI think its a IE8 THING. To change the source view..
Open IE
Click on Tools
Click on Developer Tools
Click on File
Click on Customize IE View Source
Change from default to notepad Thanks a lot, fixed the problem in 10 minutes after a month or so of frustration.

Very much appreciated, how it got changed from notepad I don`t know. I love easy fixes. The view you was seeing is the default viewer for IE 8. Quote from: markuspd on December 31, 2009, 04:13:50 AM

It's an IE 8 feature.  And, most experienced web developers view it as a good thing.  You see, the line numbers and different coloured fonts are there to help you read your HTML coding.  HTML tags will be one color; attributes, another color; and attribute values, another color.  It really makes reading HTML coding easier.

Solve : 32 or 64 bit win 7 for gamers?

Answer»

I am thinking of upgrading my RAM to 4gb from the 2gb that I am using now, and want to upgrade to 64-bit OS to optimize system performance.  I am having second thoughts because most of my games and apps will not run as speculated. How would I know and make sure if my games and apps will run in 64-bit environment?  any patch or software that I could run to make sure that all my software that are currently running in 32-bit will run in 64-bit.What software/games are you running now?Games: Crysis, Mass Effect, Assasin's Creed 1, GTR, Tiberium Wars, Arkham Asylum, Call of Duty 2, World of Goo, Guitar Hero, Hawx, Larry's Apartment, 7 Sins, and Far Cry. These are the games that would really matter. Paid a FORTUNE for these games and could not bare to think that I couldn't play them anymore with Win 7 64-bit. They say that running at 64-bit is faster than 32. Is that true? That's what I am really opting and upgrading my Ram, as well.
Applications: Adobe CS3, Nero 9, MS Office 7 and Maya. These are the apps that I just wanna make sure it would run in 64.
I really appreciate the assistance.
Oh, add Adobe After Effects. tnxOnly one I could concieve to be a problem would be Office 7, but I assume you don't actually mean Office 7 (that is, before office 95) but actually Office 2007.

None of those should have issues running on 64-bit; the only thing that stops working period on 64-bit is the 16-bit emulation for older windows 3.1 and early win95 programs; 32-bit is now done using the same Windows On Windows (WOW64) architecture that was being used for 16-bit programs, it doesn't boost the performance of 32-bit applications, but you still get the benefit of 64-bit for other apps and the 32-bit programs don't run slower then they do a 32-bit OS.

You might need to reinstall a few of those games; for EXAMPLE, Crysis has a 64-bit executable that vastly improves speed; I'm sure some of those other games do as well. They might install it even on a 32-bit system; you might want to check their install folders.Office 2007 works fine on x64.  It's a 32-bit app, so it will be running in WOW64, but for the end-user, it works.

Office 2010 will actually have a native 64-bit version as well as a 32-bit version.  Both betas work in x64 (the 32-bit in WOW64, of course).

To the TC: The main benefit for 64-bit is being able to use 4 GB of RAM or more without running into the native 32-bit 4 GB ceiling. Quote from: killerb255 on December 29, 2009, 08:28:49 AM

the 4GB ceiling is artificial, and is literally a part of windows license details.

Broni was talking about it, and had a link to an article of some sort describing the feature and how it is implemented. One last thing. How about driver??? Do I need to look for 64-bit drivers??? Are all components have 64 ver now?

the drivers can be found at the same location as you found the 32-bit versions. Nvidia drivers for example seem to have both in one package. And most of the stuff you have will likely have 64-bit drivers upgraded right when you install.

what do mean artificial???

I mean people seem to have this strange notion that 32-bit PCs can only address 4GB of RAM. they can address 2^32 bytes, or 4GB of RAM. what these people forget is that that means that 16-bit PCs should only have been able to address 64KB of RAM, and yet the 286, a 16-bit processor, was able to address up to 16 MB; and this means that the original IBM PC could have never had 640K of RAM, since 2^8 is 256 bytes. The limitation is artificial, because it's enforced by windows itself; it simply refuses to recognize more then 4GB of RAM, even though the hardware can recognize it just fine.

http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2009/08/19/make-windows-7-and-vista-32-bit-x86-support-more-than-4gb-memory/

I'm aware that x86 can support 2^36 bytes (about 64 GB) of RAM with uncrippled PAE.  I'm also aware of the licensing issues of doing so.

It's crippled in XP/Vista/7 x86.  It's uncrippled in 2000/Server 2003/Server 2008 x86.

Even then, it's not totally artificial once old motherboards come into play, as many of them don't support remapping hardware above the 4 GB addressable space.

Some older Socket 939 AMD builds run into this problem, regardless of whether a 64-bit OS is used or if PAE is enabled and uncrippled in 32-bit...

Either way, this does not resolve is the 2 GB limit on an application thread (or 3 GB if /3GB is used and the app is aware of it).

Also, doesn't the use of uncrippled PAE open up the machine to potential driver problems when the driver TRIES to address the memory space >4 GB?k got it. thanks. its Microsoft's fault. nothing wrong with hardware. more of the Windows or OS limitation. Hope I got that right. It is Microsoft's fault for the most part.

I actually posted a reply in that link BC_Programmer posted explaining part of it.

Part of the problem is licensing, like BC said.

The other part is most likely drivers.  If they're not written to take advantage of PAE, then they'll cause consumers all kinds of grief with their 12 GB RAM 32-bit (well...36-bit) BEASTS...

I guess Microsoft decided to say "forget it" when it comes to dealing with that issue in the consumer sector.  Since 64-bit is here, there's no reason to repeat the 640k workarounds again...

...and since Windows Server 2008 R2 and Small Business Server 2008 are 64-bit only, I'm pretty sure Microsoft is serious about the 64-bit route...I figure they just don't want to have to worry about bugs cropping up if they support more then 4GB of RAM with their 32-bit consumer OS's, especially with applications that don't expect that much RAM. people seem to think it's a conspiracy to get people to move to 64-bit, as if 64-bit is a bad thing. Besides, if you have more then 4GB of RAM, chances are you also have a 64-bit processor anyway, and why waste effectively half of it running a 32-bit OS?

Really it's no different then the 16-bit to 32-bit switch, in fact it's less painful for the most part.

the 2GB limit is per process , not thread. Also, I don't think /3GB is used after NT4/Windows 2000; I think they changed it to /MAXMEM or something. personally I'd never tinker with the allocated address space per process anyway, especially since applications need to be flagged using a compiler option to use the extra 1GB anyway. Right train of thought, wrong terminology on my part.

/3GB is still used in XP and Server 2003.  I have a client that uses AutoCAD and have had "out of memory" issues on their 32-bit XP machines when /3GB is not in boot.ini.

The NT6 OSes are a different animal altogether with BCD, in which uses the /MAXMEM switch...

Solve : Screen turns black after login?

Answer»

So today I was having trouble connecting to a wireless internet network and decided to restart my computer. In the process, it was taking a long time so I turned it off USING the POWER button. When I turned it back on, everything went on as usual (except for the screen at the start telling me the computer had not been shut off properly; I chose to start windows as normal). After I came to the log in screen and entered my password to login, the screen turned black but I could still move around the mouse. I left it alone for a while but nothing had happened. How can I fix this?

I'm on Windows Vista Home Premium.

Thank you!Let's get the obvious out of the way first - I assume you've tried rebooting again, yes? If so, boot to the Vists disk and try the repair options. In the future, you might consider using a disk imaging utility on a REGULAR basis. MAKES it a lot easier to recover from major problems.Sorry I'm kinda lacking in the technology department. If by rebooting you mean turning the computer back off and on again then yeah I've tried that. What do you mean by booting to the Vists disk though?MAKE sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, insert the Vista cd, and reboot.Would restoring the system work instead? You can try it...but you need to be in Windows 1st.
If you mean restoring Windows from the CD ALL your data and apps will be gone and the machine will be back to Day 1 status...

Solve : Hidden Partition in Hard Drive?

Answer»

I have Vaio VGN-FE670G, a used laptop BOUGHT from my buddy a few months ago.
Although it should using Windows XP for the OS, recently i trying to use Windows 7.

And here is the problem...
My Hard Drive have a hidden partition contain all driver for this computer, but it can only explored using Partition Magic under Windows XP which uncompatible with my Windows 7. So i cant use those drivers.
(in Windows 7 several drivers are not up to date)

Any suggestion please..

Thanks before

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]here is the driver page for the computer. doesn't look like any 7 drivers u might look at the drivers and go to each makers site and see if they have the drivers. also did you use the windows 7 upgrade adivsor before upgrading to determine if your hardware was compatible?i have try to download those driver in http://esupport.sony.com with "Sony Download TAXI" preserve by this site.

At first ATTEMPT, i could download some drivers but as the internet connection interrupted, it stalled while there are some other drivers not downloaded yet.

At second attempt, i couldnt use the "Taxi" anymore.

I'm sure these drivers are in the hidden partition, i can see it but i can't explore/ use it in windows 7.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]the SYSTEM partition is ONLY used during a system recovery and has no immediately user-installable drivers that can be installed in a existing Operating system install.

The only way to install the drivers is to boot to that partition, and it wipes your entire operating system et al.

Since it came with XP, that means the system partition WOULD install XP. XP Drivers will not work with Windows 7, and the Windows 7 drivers most certainly are NOT on that partition.

Solve : 32 bit & 64 bit?

Answer»

I have upgraded from a 32 bit/Windows Vista XP to a 64 bit Windows 7 laptop.  I have an important program for my business that does not run on 64 bit.  I have contacted the company and the upgrade from the company may or may not happen.  Currently, my program (Design-a-Knit 7) does not work on my new computer. Is there an easy way to install a 32 bit card or something on my new computer so I can use my old program?  Or, do I have to find an old 32 bit/windows Vista computer to keep operating.  Frustrated but not giving up!  You can dual boot, but I went from 64 to 32 for just that reason - some old, custom apps that would not run under a 64 bit OS.You can try the following:
In the Program folder find the .exe for tha app...
Right click it and select create shortcut.
Drag the shortcut to the Desktop.
Re-boot.
Right click the shortcut and select Properties then check "run in compatibility mode"...Alternatively, you can also install Windows XP Mode in Windows 7, as long as you're using Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

...and no, that's not a typo above: the Virtual PC page leads to the download for XP Mode, as XP Mode runs in Virtual PC. As long as their CPU supports it...not all of them do.
VMWare workstation may not be free, but it's "Unity" mode is a lot better then XP mode. you can have Windows 2000, windows 98, and windows NT4 as well as Windows XP applications on the same desktop. Personally though I find it far more sensible to have the windows from each VM within, you know, their own VM window, to prevent confusion. Additionally, as far as I'm concerned; I think XP mode is really just a gimmick. "ooh! Look, This program runs perfectly fine under windows Vista and 7, but, *censored*, it looks like it's running under XP when we use "XP mode"! Look! RED X BUTTONS! OMG! LIKE SRSLY OMFG IT'S LIKE ALL RETRO D00D!

Meanwhile, everybody else is either A:) running the program normally with no changes under Windows 7, using the NORMAL compatibility mode (you know, the one that doesn't start a full-blown VM?) Or using software that is written by programmers who don't CONSTANTLY do the exact opposite of the MSDN documentation. "Oh, well, golly gee, it accepts a 32-bit integer, but only uses the lower 16-bits, I know! I'll SHOVE random crap into the upper 16-bits!

"Why the *censored* doesn't my app work with NT anymore?"

One purported benefit of XP mode is that INTERNET Explorer can be "sandboxed" in it. That's wonderful. But it still doesn't FIX internet explorer. here is the Internet Explorer timeline:

IE1: Not free. ok, a little less powerful then the competition, but hey, that's life.

IE2: OK, NOW we have a TOOLBAR! Sure, the toolbar doesn't have icons, but I mean, who needs icons? We'll never need icons.

IE3: alright, we added icons to the toolbar. Oh, and we added this really super awesome feature, you can embed and use ActiveX Controls in your web pages, and if you use the CODEBASE tag you can get IE to automatically download and install your activeX Component, it's super awesome! Yeah Binary executable code downloaded without a prompt straight to the client computer and executed! hooray!

IE4: Ok, we seriously could have never predicted that people would *GASP* write and force them to download using Internet Explorer! How could people do this to us! But it's ok, we added authenticode, and there is no way they can sign their code without feeling guilty.

IE5: What? They are still signing their activeX Controls? What is wrong with them? Don't they realize that they aren't ALLOWED TO DO THAT! It's against the EULA of the signing tool! Ok, now we are putting up a warning to the user, who will probably click OK anyway. Oh, and we are putting this cute little picture that looks like a certificate! bob scanned in his high-school diploma for that one. Anyway, no need to worry about security! We have CSS behaviours! yippee! Screw w3c, we'll make up our own standards as we go along, I mean, hey, netscape got to invent the blink tag, it's only fair that we make the relatively harmless HTML markup language into a dangerous powerful programming environment! INSTALL VISUAL INTERDEV TODAY!

IE6: YAY! the new version! GET IT NOW! it has new features, like... err, well, it looks a little different. Oh, and when there's an error on your web page, it will prompt you for every single one, even though the user is unlikely to know *censored* a javascript error is or what to do about it. However it will ensure that the user has nightmares about variables being null or undefined. Oh yeah, we TOTALLY redid the whole security thing, we replace that whole certificate prompt with a little information bar, and it makes a cute beep-boop sound, too! hooray! coolness!

IE7: Why are ppl using firefox! It must be the tabs, so we added tabs to IE7! everybody use IE7 becuz it is cool! We didn't really change a whole lot else, pah, bugs can wait! UI features first!

IE8: OK, we truly wrote everything over, the rendering engine is I SWEAR! 100% W3c compatible. Oh, except pages now need to have a totally non w3c header that says they can be rendered by IE8. yeah, life sucks that way. otherwise we'll use our UBER COOL HTML renderer. It's cool because it supports CSS BEHAVIOURS, and you can embed super cool little activeX controls, and when you load them, they make this neat-o "beep-boop" sound! it's cool!"

From this, I have concluded Microsoft's real design goal: make as many beep-boop type ornamental sounds as possible. That is why they made UAC! yet another reason toe beep-boop! it's a conspiracy I tells ya!

Solve : A multitude of mind boggling issues?

Answer»

I must first thank anyone who takes the time to read and answer my list of problems occuring on my computer.
My computer is a Gateway, model #GT5428, with Windows VISTA. My monitor is an FPD1775WTFT LCD flat screen. My computer itself has Intel Pentium D Processor 935, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950, Optical Drive, Hard Drive of 250GB, AND Memory(1024 MB DDR2). I hope this is ENOUGH information on my computer to HELP anyone who can help.
Now, onto the list of problems.
My first problem is that I had recently taken my computer to a guy to repair it, needless to say he did not do a good job, and before I took it to him I uninstalled most of my programs that were just games and the likes. I had uninstalled all of my Sims2 games, so when I got my computer back I tried to reinstall them, but when I did my computer would not recognize my disk, so I thought it was the disk so I bought a completely new disk and tried it. The new disk was not recognized either. I then put in an expansion pack disk, and my computer accepted it. I also recently just got the Sims3 game and my computer will not accept that disk either. I have no idea what is causing this.
Another problem is that I have a Sansa Mp3 player that I had used on my computer before I sent it for repairs. When I got the computer back it would charge my mp3 player but would not recognize it enough for me to delete or add songs to it. I found the disk for my mp3 player and tried to reinstall the disk, and my computer will not install the disk.
Also, I have a Kodak camera, model #M1033, that I commonly take photos and video with. My computer will accept and load the photos, but it will not play the videos.
My last problem that I can remember is that I have some songs I got from friends and such that were on my computer that I moved to an external hard drive when my computer went to get repaired, well now my computer will not play the music when taken off the external hard drive.

Thank you to anyone who can help me. I believe the 1st 2 issues point to a CD/DVD drive/burner on it's way out...
Easiest way to test this is to borrow a known good ONE and swap it in there overnight.
Try all the offending CD/DVD's on it...if they work then it's the drive.
Fortunately they are inexpensive right now and it's something you can replace yourself without heading back to the shop...

With the Kodak issue try transferring the movies to your hard drive and playing them that way...did this ever work BTW ? ?

Not sure about the last one...when you say taken off the external how exactly was this done ? ?I'll have to look into finding someone who will let me borrow their CD/DVD driver/burner. If it works with the disks that aren't currently working, then I will have to look for an inexpensive one.

I believe it has worked before, though I can not be 100% sure without going through all of my past videos to see which camera I used them on. They generally work if I use my other camera that I unfortunately have MISPLACED somewhere in my home. How exactly would I transfer it to my harddrive? Through the use of a USB cord? To get my photos and video into the computer I simply place my memory card into my computer and do it that way.

To get my music off the external I connect it through the USB, then I go to my music folder in the external harddrive and click to play the music. That doesn't work. I'm not sure how else to get the music transferred. To copy the movies to your PC insert the card ...same as you do for pics...
Make a Movie folder...you can name it what you like....
Then right clik a movie file and select Copy to...and point it to the new folder.
NOTE: These will take longer to transfer than your pics so be patient.

As far as the external move the music files in the same manner...or they can be played while still being on the external simply by double-cliking on a music file.

Solve : cannot reload xp after failing to load windows 7?

A friend of mine wanted to load windows 7 on our acer (aspire 5000) and told my it would not load because there was not enough memory he SAID something about moving memory around to try and get it in.He then INSTALLED his newer version of xp ,when i got back i could not connect to the internet.i tried to turn on the ethernet port light  on this laptop, but nothing seem to work ,so not having his disk i tried to install my older copy of xp it turned off right after it asked for the administrator pass word. it gets better LOL!!! i then tried windows 98 the original disk the unit came with,it stopped at a fatal exception 0E has occurred 0028:ff02847b.When i turn on the laptop I HIT f12 and follow the instructions .HELP!!!Absolutely, positively no idea what you're talking about....
You tried to turn on the ethernet port light?
Moving memory around?
Installed his newer version of XP? Over what?
You tried to install an OLDER copy of XP?
You then tried Windows 98?

I honestly have no idea what you've done (or why) or what is currently on your system.I reloaded windows 98 then used the 4 recovery disks some how I have the newer version of xp that my friend put in,also, now i have the enthernet port light back on ,and everything is working again.??Happy ending We need clear information.
You have a version of XP that was working good on this Laptop?
Next you went to install Windows 7 over it and it failed?

Did you use the recommended method of doing a fresh install of putting Windows XP onto a laptop that had Vista or Win7.

Microsoft and this forum have warned users that an install of Windos XP on a Hard Drive that had Vista or Win 7 will fail. Unless you follow the specific instructions.

Here are the general instructions that should work in most cases. (Some details will not apply.)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348

If you did that and it failed, please note the error, if any, and come back here.

since I got my new computer
Return it.Both those files are ESSENTIAL Windows files and shouldn't be causing problems.  Like Broni said, take it back.

Alan <><  Yes, it's almost certainly a problem with RAM, something not worth investigating with a new PC. So the error codes indicate that the RAM is at fault? I'm just curious as to what is causing is causing the problem, since I have done a memory diagnostics test, and it claimed to find no problems.Windows test ? ?
Or MemTest ?I used the windows repair mode memory test and MemTest86+ 4.0. Both returned no errors. Then it's not the Memory...
How old is this install and what protection apps do you run ?I use avast! and AVG. They both run at the same time, so could this be the problem?

This install is about 2 weeks old, but the problem has persisted since about the second day I turned it on, which was after I installed virus protection...Yep.
Rule of Thumb is you should only have 1 A/V app at any time and NEVER run them both at once... So, the programs were interfering with the memory somehow? I can see how file-scanning when something is opened could cause conflict, but I never really thought about it.

I know this might not be the best place to ask, but which one should I get rid of? The only reason I installed AVG was because I found out that avast! did not have a firewall. Do you think AVG is strong enough to be my only virus protection?Personal preference is all it comes down to...
Forget one of them and keep the other.

There are FREE firewalls out there to try if you feel you really need one...You should also check whether you have WinDefender running in the background.
Note; It does not show up in "Add/remove programs'.
Try disabling it; apparently it does not play well with other AV software.
I have also found that switching from AVG to AntiVir resulted in a lot less application errors on my system; I'm running Win7 Ultimate, by the way; so take this for what it's worth.

Solve : Need Win XP Pro Help!?

Answer»

OK frist of all thanks for looking...just need a little help ..
couple of days ago i completely deleted my win xp and did a clean install of windows 7 then after few days of using decided to go back to XP...[win 7 doesnt know the words equalizer or subwoofer?thats why..]
anyway i tried installing windows xp but the install failed it said something like ..error acces denied blah blah blah thats not really the problem though, after win xp install failed i installed windows 7 again it didnt really take long time and in the HDD selection i chose my main HDD and instead of something that said "System" i Chose Allocated or UNALLOCATED space cant remember something like that..right now im using windows 7 again but.. instead of 1 HDD i have 2 now? i only have 1.. but in my computer it says 2.. i believe that on each HDD theres windows 7 installed ..and when i boot i get to choose between 3 OS one is Older Windows..and then there are 2 windows 7 options..i need to uninstall one windows 7 and get my 2 hdd back into one..and i dont really know what to do
oh i forgot to add that i just tried to play MW2 and every time a mission loads it says i need at least 5MB on my game drive ? and there should be at least 60GB free space on each HDD i think that has something to do with the 1 hdd make 2 hdd filesBased on your post(s) it's impossible to know what you did for sure, but apparently you have multiple instances of Windows installed. If I were you I'd boot to the Windows 7 DVD and do a reinstall, deleting all partitions and recreating just the system partition first.yeah. you partitioned your HDD and instead of reinstalling Win 7 you installed another one, not to mention, the unfinished Win XP installation created an option on the OS menu prior boot. do an OSRI either XP or Win 7, but got to delete all partitions. this would delete all files in the HDD and get a clean OSRI. regarding the equalizer and/or subwoofer settings, you could install a driver with an application to have setting options. i think you could download that through OEM website of your soundcard. if you have Win 7, no reason to back to XP. if you have more than 3.2gb of RAM, you must use a 64-bit Win 7 to optimize system performance. the only problem there is that not all software and/or drivers are compatible with 64-bit yet. it is very TEDIOUS to look for drivers if the drivers you have currently wouldnt run in 64-bit environment and limits the software that could be use if theyre wont run in 64-bit.What are you talking about?just explaining entirely the whole issue for clarifications. why?correct me if I am wrong Allan, just don't make derogatory comments. just wanna help. this is what the forum is all about, right. quote: "If you have some solutions, register and help others.  Unlike many "Help Boards", we welcome input from well informed and well experienced members, not just moderators." a bullet in the forum 'read me.' Sounds right to me

What's an OSRI? best I can guess is "Operating System Repair Install" but the context suggests a clean install, in order to delete partitions. This is probably what confused Allan

Correct; it would APPEAR that team-rng simply was using the generic SOUND drivers for their card, my Vista Desktop and Windows 7 laptop both posess equalizers (treble/bass) as well as setup for 5.1 surround.

if you have more than 3.2gb of RAM, you must use a 64-bit Win 7 to optimize system performance.
the limit sits around 3.5-4.0GB of RAM, it's an artificial limitation, but a limitation none-theless; the main reason for running a 64-bit system isn't necessarily RAM (although, obviously, if you have more then around 4GB you will have more RAM in x64) the main reason is if you have a 64-bit processor. And of course you could use Windows XP x64 (or 64-bit edition if you have an Itanium) or Vista x64 as well, but that's just being pedantic, since win7 is the only other OS the OP has suggested they have.

the only problem there is that not all software and/or drivers are compatible with 64-bit yet.
While this is certainly true, for the most part, only custom-written applications built for DOS SYSTEMS will not run on a x64 PC; the only things one would need to worry about are things like old sound cards or network cards, and if somebody is willing to scrap x64 just so they can use their 8 dollar network card, well, that's kind of silly

Anyway, I think the main confusion vector was the term OSRI...
Spell it bacwards and it starts to make sense.....OSRI - Operating System ReInstallation
no jargons. sor.=i.
BC_Programmer got it right.
clean installation.Sorry I got here late!
Hey, didn't we just do all this?
Is this a new OP?
Did he not do a search?

Solve : How can I create a custom WindowsColor Scheme- Win Vista?

Answer»

I've been trying without any success for weeks trying to change My windows color scheme to a very specific and unique color unattainable in "windows color and appearance" in the "personalization" WINDOW.
I somehow did I once a long time ago but did not save the tutorial because I wasn't expecting to ever do that again (I took about 50 hours of tedious setting changes to do that- about 100 STEPS that must be done in a very specific order, one error and it must be again from the beginning) My roommate did the high contrast prank on me and rest the windows colors to default again. I have been UNABLE to find that tutorial, I'm hoping someone here can tell me how to do this again.

For some reason I cannot create my own color scheme in Vista, like how I could in Windows XP. the only thing I can change from the appearance settings (personalization->windows color and appearance->aero->advanced appearance) is fonts used by windows no matter what color of the windows I select in that windows it isn't applied in vista. Its very frustrating and the settings I attempted cannot be saved from the window. Is there away to EITHER save my settings that I create (there isn't a save button) or some kind of workaround?

-thanksControl Panel->Appearance:

click "show color mixer"...

Use the controls to change window color.

if the Color mixer is not available, update to SP1 or SP2.
