Solve : External sound lost on Inspiron 530 Desktop with Vista?

Answer»

Hi,
My computer went to the shop to get cleaned up due to its crashing a few times (not related to SOUND).
When the computer was reinstalled at home, it worked great but now there is no sound going to the external speakers.
(I  can hear an audible beep from WITHIN the computer itself, but when I try to view a video or
run Pandora, there is nothing from the external speakers.  (Pandora won't load, if that's of any help).

The guy in the shop isn't sure what it could be.  Any suggestions, please?

BowenI would look into trying an updated driver. Thanks,
Do you think something could have gone wrong with the driver, while the computer was being worked on for other issues?
Is this a Vista issue?Depends on what they "worked on".  No, it's not a Vista "issue". Quote

Was there a separate installation of Windows other than the shop repair THING? Check on your device manager for any marks or flags under Audio controllers. There is a chance that after installing, the device driver was not installed. Please post on your computer details/model/brand and or any soundcard added.Hi,
I checked the Device Manager. It has Realtek Audio, but I was too nervous to 'search for updated driver'.
It's a Dell Model, Inspiron 530, with Vista.  Would it be helpful or harmful to 'search for updated driver' ?
Thanks,,Your'e in luck as Dell makes it probably easier than anyone...
TRAVEL to the Dell site and enter your service tag # and OS...all your drivers will be listed.Thank you.  I'll pass that info along to the service guy...he didn't seem certain as to what to do to fix it...No problem...

HOWEVER if he wants to stay as a Tech he should learn how to find update and install drivers...

Just sayin...I don't know about the case but if you sent your computer for cleanup, then that's what he did. I think he didn't do anything else. Also, when you reinstall your Windows, in lots of cases, you have to reinstall the drivers. Once installed and the speakers are plugged, the sound should work. That's how idiot Windows is these days. All of this has already been illustrated...

Carry on though. Thanks for the suggestions.  I agree that the tech should have known about the drivers, etc.

What do you mean it keeps restarting? Do you mean it goes back to the beginning of the disc? Does it happen with every video or just one?

Did this just start happening or has it been GOING on for a while?

Are there any other issues with the system?

Solve : Computer Freeze Problems?

Answer»

My COMPUTER has been freezing up SINCE early summer. It started as once or twice every six hours or so, but recently has been freezing every time I TRY to USE it.

The trouble seems to have started when I changed my wireless settings on my router to a secured network on channel 1 instead of the 9 that I was using. I don't see how these network changes could effect my computer so drastically.

I was also changing some registry options but have since changed them back to no positive effect.

At start up I am receiving an error notice that might be connected (I don't think it is but it fits the timeline.) "Spooler SubSystem App has stopped working and was closed."

The freezing seems to get worse with internet video.

All the fans work before and during the freeze.

I am running:
Operating System
MS Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit SP2
CPU
   Intel Pentium 4 641
   Cedar Mill 65nm Technology
RAM
   2.0GB Dual-Channel DDR2 266MHz (4-4-4-12)
Motherboard
   ECS Livermore (CPU 1)
Graphics
   eView 17f2 1024x768
   HP S2031 1600x900
   NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450
Hard Drives
   156GB Hitachi Hitachi HDS721616PLA380 ATA DEVICE (SATA)   49 °C
   19.6GB Seagate ST320410A ATA Device (PATA)   47 °C
Optical Drives
   TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H652M ATA Device
Audio
Realtek High Definition AudioAs a simple check:
Reboot in SAFE  mode and log in as the administrator.
Do NOT get on the internet.
Try doing some things that do NOT require the internet.

This can help isolate the problem. You may have a network device driver that bis not really right. But if the problem shows up even when you are in  SAFE mode and off the internet, you have another kind pf problem.

I do believe that it has something to do with the network because of the strong correlation between heavier use and freezing.

The computer runs the internet through an external wireless adapter. Would it be possible that it failing would cause this? I thought of this, but I don't see how it would.

Maybe I changed the router settings to something that is incompatible with the older adapter.

Solve : What to do if even recovery disk doesn't help?

Answer»

Hi I'm trying to help out a friend with a problem with her Sony Vaio laptop that came with pre-INSTALLED Windows 7 Home Basic. She updated Windows like she usually does and when she restarted it freezes during logon before the desktop appears. The MOUSE cursor is there and the wallpaper but nothing else. I tried to boot in safe mode but its the same problem. We cant do a system restore. We tried using the Recovery/rescue disk but it also doesn't work. It just shows the screen telling us that the recovery process is about to start and it just gets stuck there for a very long time. The only thing I can think of next is to do a reformat and re-install of Windows 7. Since we don't have an installation disk (since the laptop came with Windows 7 preinstalled already), is my choice only to buy a new copy of Window 7? The laptop was a gift and was bought overseas so she cant go to the original seller. Second question is if we do a new install of Windows 7, will it remove the Sony Vaio software (I'm talking about Sony Vaio functionality like the Webgate which allows internet access without booting Windows, etc)? Thanks for any help guys.Laptops nowadays ship without a Windows CD...it's been this way for awhile now.
There are basically 2 options depending on the manufacturer:
1) They will have instructions on creating your own Recovery DVD....or
2) They will have instructions on accessing the hidden Recovery partition to facilitate a re-install of Windows7.

Unfortunately doing this either way will wipe her data and take the machine back to Day One status....as if it were brand new....
And yes the Sony software and all pre-installed apps plus system drivers etc. will all be included.

Contact Sony before proceeding...
If you have important data on there since you cannot get into Windows the hard drive would need to be removed and put in an external enclosure and hooked up to a working machine to retrieve any needed data....

The only other option...but one well worth considering would be to borrow a Win7 DVD from someone and run a Repair install which is the last option when booting to the DVD...
NOTE: For this to work properly the versions have to match what she has and whats on the DVD...

Hope there is a workable option here for you...There used to be another way where you could DLoad an .iso to create a Repair DVD...
This tool will not re-install Win7...only repair the existing installation...
Unfortunately the lawyers got involved and the file had to be taken down from the site...

Thanks for the advice. I dont think my friend has any important data that she might want to save there. I can probably borrow a copy of Windows 7 Home Basic 64-bit from somewhere. Does it matter that its not the same copy of Windows 7 that was used in the laptop? Can I use the Home Premium? We tried to do a repair install but when it goes to the Windows is starting screen it just stays there and just freezes just like before. Do I need to bring it already to a Sony service center? The Product key for your Win 7 Basic differs from Home Premiums Edition. Are you sure the CD is free from scratches or dust? Since this is a laptop, try direct connecting AC power adapter when performing the repair option. We don't know about the power being drawn for the battery-only usage compared to the direct power so its worth a try.  Quote

If that is true, it is not a crime to borrow a restore image made from another Sony Vaio that has the exact same Windows 7 OS. The Sony has a COA that gives the owner the right to use that OEM version of Windows 7. The COA does NOT extend to other versions.

My recommendation is to look around locally for somebody who has done a backup of the original OEM install on that Sony model. Worth a try.Ask at  the local college .Many youngsters have Sony laptops.

Solve : Windows wont boot?

Answer»

Hey,
I really need HELP cause my new asus laptop (G50V) has all my important files on it... and cause I bought it like 4 months ago I DIDNT do a backup yet!
When I wanted to start it yesterday it wouldnt go on, the only thing that appeared was that there is some problem with the system file.... I tried using the vista diagnostics and nothing came up. I booted succesfully once using the safe mode, but then i could only use the task-manager cause whenever I wanted to open explorer, it said it cant because of a system error....
Now if I try to boot windows in safe mode, the windows logo comes up and loads for 2 hours!! then the SCREEN turns blue with some code and reboots..
I dont know what to do!
pls help me
Thnks,
David Quote from: davidcihelna on July 06, 2009, 03:06:50 PM

That's a BSOD so what are the codes on the screen? Lots of 0000 etc. Please copy them all and post on here. The blue screen is gone so quickly I cant even read a part of it...
but i got another error message that said this:

Exception Processing Message 0x0000102 Parameters 0x75DE92AO 0x75DE92AO 0x75DE92AO 0x75DE92AO

and another time it said that the system32 file is corrupted.....If you have Vista DVD...

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

If you don't have Vista DVD...

1. Create Vista Recovery Disc.

Option 1:
http://www.c4consulting.com.au/soluctions/vista/VISTA%20SOLUCTIONS.htm

Option 2:
Download Vista Recovery Disc iso image: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/
Burn it to CD, or DVD: http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+to+a+CD+or+DVD

2. Boot from created disk.
At first screen click on Repair your computer:

This will bring you to a new screen where the repair process will look for all Windows Vista installations on your computer. When done you will be presented with the System Recovery Options dialog box:

After this, it will present you with a list of options including startup repair, system restore and command prompt:

Try System Restore, first.
If that doesn't work, try Startup Repair. Thanks great help!!!
But will my files be deleted when I repair vista using the downloaded ISO???No. It only deals with system files. So I did that: Restore doesnt work at all....If I repair, then the diagnosis comes up saying:

Error code = 0x0

Root Cause found:
Registry is corrupt.

What now? Quote
Restore doesnt work at all
Please, be more specific.Well you said I should try System Restore from the Vista Repair Disc, and it can't do that cause there are no restore points present...
So I tried System Repair, and when it was done it said it cant fix the problem: so I pressed on the button that shows the details and thats the message that came up..I believe, without Vista DVD (could be BORROWED one), we can't do much here, short of reinstall.I can borrow one...
What do i do if I have it?You can try repair install: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html Quote from: Broni on July 06, 2009, 07:53:48 PM

Solve : Windows 7 Freezes at Windows Error Recovery Screen?

Answer»

Hi All,

New to the forums but not to computers. I recently got a new case for my computer(no more 80mm fans for me here =D ) And after everything was put back in, cabled arranged nicely, etc. I go to TURN my computer on, everything loads up, bios goes past, and then the windows error recovery screen comes up so im like well i did get a new case and needed to make sure i had everything in the right spot before i sealed it up and i turned it on then off and thats why the screen came up. Now my only problem is, when i went to USE my keyboard to move down to start windows normally, the ticker for the 30 seconds to choose an option, well it froze. I couldnt do anything at all and it stayed frozen for about 5 minutes. So i restart it, dont press anything, the ticker counts down and its the repair option, so it goes to windows in loading files. Windows loads the files but then the screen gets stuck at 100%. Im at a lose of what to do now. Any help is MUCH Appreciated, Thanks for your time,

Russell

Nope, thing recently installed or added, Everything was the same for about a month before the new caseOk, I understand you have replaced the casing only. Did it actually boot to Windows Recovery screen before or straight to Windows 7 system? You are not actually booting by your Win 7 disc are you? Quote from: jason2074 on July 22, 2011, 12:57:07 AM

What happened was I did a test run to make sure everything was in the correct spot and not messed up so i turned the power on for a second or two then turned it off once i saw everything light up. When i plugged Everything in, usb's etc. into the back i turned it on and the screen i got was the recovery screen. What happens is when i have a keyboard plugged in and i press the arrow key to go down to start windows normally, everything freezes. I have the disk in the dvd DRIVE and i have tried booting from the disk also but when i do and the hard drive is plugged in, everything freezes again. When i dont have any hard drives and boot from the disk, I get stuck at the Starting Windows screen with nothing but a black background.Have you tried reconnecting and using just the minimum hardware installed? One or two RAMS first, HD keyboard or mouse already plugged in? Try removing CMOS battery for about 10 minutes. Unless there is something wrong with the HD, you MIGHT need to run a diagnostic test. How will i run a diagnostic test if i cant even get into safe mode? I tried getting into safe mode but when i tapped f8, my computer screen froze at the bios loading screen Quote

Try this first.

You need to connect the HD as a secondary drive on another system then right-click the drive and use the windows error checking tool under Properties/Tools. Uncheck first both check disk options and wait for the report and details found after the scan.

Solve : Web Browsers not working?

Answer»

So I got a new laptop about 4 months ago, its a acer 5741z and has windows 7 on it. However recently the internet stopped working for some reason. It says its still connected to the wireless network but Chrome says the DNS lookup failed. I tried with internet explorer too but its not working there either. The strange thing is that Skype still works though, so I know the internet must be connected somehow. I looked around and tried changing the DNS server to one of the free Google ones as suggested by one guy but it didn't work. Any ideas? Please download MiniToolBox and run it.

Your settings look fine, but "ping" command doesn't show any working connection.

Can you get ethernet cable, physically connect your computer to the router and see if the connection is there? No, that didn't work either. It said ' "Local area connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration'.Try to bypass the router and connect your computer straight to the modem.

Do you have any errors in Device Manager?

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is FINISHED, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.
IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.
Alright, thanks a lot. I'll give all this a try

Solve : problem installing programs?

Answer»

I have a couple of programs, which are my favorite and which I've had and used for years. Recently I got my first new computer and it had Windows 7 on it. I've never used that before and it's taken a lot of getting used to. My previous computers had windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows ME and Windows 98. I was unaware that this Windows was DIFFERENT in a particular way from the other versions. I had difficulty installing those programs, which said they were "32 bit" programs and that Windows 7 was "64 bit". I'm only familiar with those terms in relation to Nintendo and it's games. The computer recommended me allowing it to make some adjustments in re-installing the programs. I thought that the programs were then installed but they wouldn't open when I tried to USE them. Though they are small programs and I've used them on every one of my previous (and much less powerful) computers, this new computer gives me pop-up messages that said I "don't have enough RAM" to run the programs. How shall I resolve this? I'd really like to use those programs on my new computer...

Thank you! What programs are you trying to install? Quote

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Optimize-Windows-7-for-better-performance
Posting your Computer model/brand/specification would also help to know what components are installed on that PC.The computer is Dell Inspiron N4110 laptop

processor: INTEL Pentium CPU B940 2.00ghz
RAM: 4gb
system: 64 bit
Windows 7 service pack 1
hard drive = 283 GB

programs I wanted to install:
Microsoft "PICTURE It!" 2.0
Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition 4.0

My previous laptop was a Compaq running Windows XP (service pack 3) with a 30gb hard drive (4gb free space) and less than a half gb of RAM. I used both these programs (many times simultaneously) on that computer. The new computer should have more than enough RAM to operate these simple programs, thus I don't understand the pop-up message.

Uninstall anything that has to do with those 2 programs first. Do a clean up in other words. Once its done, reboot your windows and from that POINT try this:

1. right click on the setup exe file of ms picture it and go in the compatibility tab and select windows 98 or xp.
2. then install MS picture it. (when its in compatibility mode ONLY)
3. Before starting the program up, right click on the execute file and do the same thing: go in compatibility tab and select win98
4. should work fine.

Theres another way but this is not the recommended but still a solution.
1. install virtual PC 2007
2. install windows xp on it or even windows 98
3. when its installed and running, load up windows 98 on virtual pc and install your programs.
4. when you need those programs, fire up virtual pc and use it.Picture it was abandoned years ago by MS...not sure about the Adobe app...

This is a workable solution...

See Here for More Details...Try http://www.getpaint.net/Thanks I think I've got them working all right

Solve : Yellow color in mail.?

Answer»

Hi -
I have Vista Home Basic  32 bit.  I think my mail is Yahoo mail.  I recently changed from Internet Explorer 7 to Internet Explorer 8.
Since that time when I go to mail and click on anything (inbox, etc.) a yellow strip appears behind what I click on.  This makes the
item I am clicking on very hard to read.  Can I get rid of the yellow strip or at least CHANGE it to another color.   Thank for help.
BobUsually a yellow strip associated with an open e-mail message contains some form of warning or advisory. It is not normally covering a part of the message but contains it's own message offering you information and usually an option to DO something. Is that the type of situation you are talking about?truenorthtruenorth -
Thanks for the reply.  I can't see any type of action with the yellow stripe.   For instance when I am getting ready to read my mail I click on "inbox" and the inbox turns yellow.  When the mail comes up I click on the subject of the mail to bring it up so that I can read it.  When I do that the subject line turns yellow.  It is like it is being highlighted.  However it is hard to read through the yellow.
BobOk that is certainly different to what i was relating to. I am not familiar with that phenomenon. Others may be. Let US wait and see. truenorthHave you tried clicking Options/Colors on the far right side of your Yahoo account page? Try hitting refresh or compatibility view near the URL search BOX while on Ymail. Have you tried also checking Ymail on other browsers?Have you tried changing the yahoo mail's theme to a different one, something that's more readable.

The yahoo mail I have is the latest version upgraded, and I have set to a green theme which is pretty easy to read with.

This is ASSUMING that's where the yellow you mention is coming from.Hi -
Thanks for the several replies.  I will check the suggestions today as I have time and will get back with results.   BobHi -
Thanks to the suggestions.  I checked on options and then THEMES.  I selected "steel" because I could read it good.  You guys
sure are a help to me.  I'm learning.        Mark this problem solved.       Bob

Don't give up yet.
Is you system usable at all?  If, you don't have to reformat to resolve the issue. Do you have lots of drive space? Enough for another install?

Use a program to re size your drive and/or make another partition.
Install a new copy of Vista on the new partition.
Then try the .NET job again. Likely you got a bum download.

Here is the reasoning for this:
1. If you had a hardware or HDD problem, there would be other signs.
2. Keeping  the original install makes it easier to find drivers and other stuff.
3. Later you might discover that nit was a simple thing anyway.
4. It really takes a long time to do a format and full install.

BTW. You should have a progressive backup plan already in place before you do any update.
Acronis,  EASUS,  Paragon and a few others work good.
Thanks for the response!Yes my system is still usable, I am just fed-up with not being able to install certain programs/updates. I have plenty of drive space for another install. I'm a definite beginner at all of this and I don't have vista I have windows 7, when I purchased this gateway It already had windows 7 on the computer and not on a disc. Sorry for the trouble but could you possibly explain how I could install a new copy of windows 7 on a new partition and how to "make another partition" or provide a TUTORIAL on how to make one and install windows 7 onto it without the disc because my gateway already had it pre-installed. Thanks for your help!OK
Here is a one stop place :
http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/partition-manager-windows-7.htm
That will direct you to the EASUS tools, which are free for home use.

You can re size the partition, it if is one huge partition and create a new one and copy the original to the new partition.

There is a way to make  windows 7 create a DVD that can be used to repair the original install or re-install critical components. Right this moment I am not in from of my Windows 7 system, so I can't recall the details.

If you have the basic Windows 7, now might be a good time to consider the upgrade option of Windows 7 ultimate.

Here is a video.
Videos of make a windows 7 repaor disk

Using the right tools, you can have two copies of Windows 7 on one hard drive. Hardy for experiments. and troubleshooting. I think its great. Others thing it is a freak, like Siamese twins. But it is a viable option to just wiping out what you have. It is actually easier to repair Windows 7 that it was to repair XP.

I have to get back to bed. CU mannana. Thanks for the response,
At this point I don't have anything else on my computer that is important and I would like to reformat. Is there a way I can just wipe my computer and re-install windows and boot windows 7 without the disc? This is because I was never given a disc to begin with it was already pre installed to my gateway. Three questions, how can I reformat without the actually copy of windows 7,and/or can I make a recovery disc or another copy of windows 7 somehow without having the same problem I do now? Next question is if I just went out and bought windows 7 ultimate and used that to boot would that be another option if my FIRST two questions can't work out? At this point I just want to wipe my hard drive and clean my computer and reinstall windows. Thanks for the help manDon't format pour drive. With Windows 7 that is seldom necessary. On your drive are folders that contain the stuff needed to re-do the installation. Please look over the videos about how to make a recovery disc in  Windows 7. It is a easy job if the system is working.

Do not format the hard drive! Do not buy another Windows 7,  unless you intend to go the upgrade path. The drivers and CABS  are non your hard drive.

Instead, you may want to put you money into a replacement drive and a external adapter.  With EASUS or other FREE clone software, you can "clone" you current drive. Then swap out the drive and fool around with different ways to rectory your system. It you fail, you still have the original. This is a very conservative method, but it works.

I am not suggesting there is anything wrong with your hard drive. Rather, I am urging you to get on the backup wagon. You already paid for windows 7. The install files are on the drive. Don't destroy them.

Please look over the videos. If you have a bad internet connection, say so and someone here can give you a link to a text only page.

And no, the recovery disc will not install on a blank hard drive.Hey Geek-9pm I'm with berricrepresent and we've been trying to solve this problem for a few days now.
I see what you mean by copying the partition and then trying to fix the issue with different options. But we don't know how to fix the issue in the first place? Are you sure you don't know how to fix this error? If we were to make a copy of the drive we would just be stuck with two copys of the same drive with the problem and no solution on how to fix it.

Please respond, thank youThe system can still make a recovery CD.
The files needed are hidden in directories that are for just this purpose.  But the rule is you can not re format the drive. The recovery disc, when you boot it, will work wonders and fix things. That is the easy part.

But I am telling the OP to start a backup plan first. We do not know for sure just what went wrong. Having another copy of the partition as a "clone" is one kind of backup plan that most people can do. It juts sound vulgar to have two copies on one drive. But it is a piratical nay to have a backup went  you have just one huge drive.

So here is what I mean.
1. Use the built-in tools to make a recovery CD or DVD. The recovery stuff will fit on a CD. Avoid the R/W kind, not very reliable. The videso show how it is done.
2. Get a copy of the Free EASES drive partition software. I have used it many times and have found it to be very reliable. Shrink the portion down at least  so there enough free space to make a new portion that can hold all the contents  of system and your folders. Might have to be 40 GB or so, depending how much stuff you have.
3. EASUS has to reboot your PC one or two times. When it is donne, start it again and crate a new portion by MAKING a copy of the active partition. Forgot to mention, it can only cloo0ne to free space equal or greater.
4. Now you can try the recovery disc. It should find and fix any errors in the original partition and reboot windows.

I am being  conservative. He does not indicate he has any backup made. I urge  him to do some kind of backup. But make the CD recovery DIS right away.

If this is to much, he can just go to his local drug store and buy an external backup for about $69,  BIG enough to hold everything he has.

The backup device costs less than a new Windows 7 install DVD.

Again. The Windows 7 recovery disc does NOT, by itself, contain a full recovery data set. It needs the special folders on the original install. So do NOT format the drive.

Reliable references:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-are-the-system-recovery-options-in-Windows-7
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-system-repair-disc

Windows 7 System Recovery Disc is a bootable disc that contains tools to recovery and fix problems that  in the Windows 7 OS. Links above explain it better that I can.

And yes, you can go ahead and try the recovery without the backup. Your choice. I am chicken.
Do you need .NET Framework to run a particular program? Have you tried running system file checker - sfc /scannow? You could also try removing first unsuccesful installation of .Net Framework 4 http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/08/28/8904493.aspx and retry again downloading in your main account or as a administrator. Other possible workaround is downloading the 3.5 version.Jason, thanks for the response but I have already tried that solution.

Geek-9pm So I booted up the system recovery/repair disc and I clicked the first option which is searching for windows problems and It didn't find a single problem... now what? Reformat time? I could easily go out and buy windows 7 unless there is another fix to this problem. No, I don't have any more ideas. Other than what I said earlier. If you have a backup of the drive you could maybe resolve the issue at a later date. Of course you could ask the manufacture of the computer for a install DVD for that machine. It should cost less than a retail Windows 7 package.Let's try cleaning up your .NET framework...

Download, unzip, and run the dotnetfx_cleanup_tool. It will remove the .NET framework from your computer so that we can reinstall it later.

After running this cleanup tool, it should ask you to reboot. Please do so.

Next, download and install dotnetfx35.exe. This will reinstall the .NET framework onto your computer. Note: this is a large file, and could take some time to download depending on the speed of your internet connection.

After another reboot, download and install dotnetfx35setup.exe. This will update the .NET framework to version 3 SP1.

If you need any more updates for the .NET framework, Windows Update should find it for you (assuming updates are set to automatically download and install).

Solve : Can't start up from XP partiton because of Windows 7 (I think)?

Answer»

Hi,

I am sure there is a simple fix for something like this, and I am not sure if this is the right place to put it.
Here it goes:
I created 2 partitions (excluding the recovery/bios partition) on my Compaq 615's 160GB 7200RPM, one for Windows XP (I installed this first) and one for Windows 7.  I could boot up into Windows XP (even throw its drive name was E not C [if that has ANYTHING to do with it]) and I could tell it recognised the other partition as it came up with the screen ASKING you to select a partition. (Originally I had left my previous windows 7 version on the other partition, windows XP recognised this)  I then formatted the old windows 7 partition and installed a new windows 7 professional onto it.  I now get NO indication that there is any other partition, it just boots STRAIGHT to the new windows 7.  I went on to the Start up and Recovery settings under the Advanced tab in the System Properties windows in windows 7 professional and found that it only had one operating system in the highlighted BOX but also made sure that if any others were found, that it gave me 30 seconds for me to chose.  I then restarted and it still booted straight to 7 with no options, I pressed F8 (something told me this could work) but it did not, I tried to use the BIOS to boot to E drive, but it only has one option, boot to notebook hard drive.

Any information/help would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Jackson CWin7 boot loader is different from WinXP.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/32523/how-to-manually-repair-windows-7-boot-loader-problems/

Note: if you want to restore Windows XP back to the menu, you can open up a command prompt in Windows 7 and RUN this command:

    bcdedit /create {ntldr} -d “Windows XP”

Whatever you do may break the link to the Compaq Recovery Partition, accessible from F10 at startup.

Solve : scroll wheel?

Answer»

Very new to computers so even the basics elude me.My problem is that when I wiped down my laptop I must have hit something that disabled my touch pads scroll feature. Can somebody please tell me how to get it back..thanksMake and model of laptop please? truenorth
P.S. Why is your post indicating solved? Is it fixed?yes it is..just restarted..will never get a grip on this..thanks for your time. its a Toshiba l65-5150.
Your postings are somewhat confusing so let us see if we can understand it in order to assist you. In your 1st post you indicated that your scroll function on the touch pad was no longer functioning after what you believe was caused by your cleaning (wiped down) your computer. You concluded that probably you had inadvertently touched a key that altered the functioning of the scroll function (sounds like a plausible conclusion). Then you indicated by selecting problem solved on that very post that it was no longer a problem. I ASKED if the "solved" was in fact true. You said "yes" then said "just restarted". So IF it was solved how did it get solved and more importantly why is it back? What have you been doing so far since the cleaning that is causing these fluctuations in performance?Have you gone into "device manager " and sought to see if your touch-pad is disabled? If not then try this " you can right click My Computer, select properties, then Hardware and select Device Manager. Make sure that under hardware your touch pad is listed. If its not, its probably under unknown DEVICES, in which case you will have to install or reinstall the driver. The driver is found on the Toshiba website under support." Please take the time to answer my questions above. truenorthtruenorth, his problem resolved itself when he restarted his laptop.  No need to pursue this further, is there?  I have the impression the OP does not care to discuss it further.   soybean --Ah Ha ! I had NOT interpreted the ".just restarted" as being that he just restarted the computer. I guess i would have thought that would have been so elemental that that would have been tried as a solution before the O/P POSTED the help request. So when he used the term" just restarted" i assumed that the problem had restarted. HENCE my further post. Thank you for what is likely the REAL situation. I will SLEEP much more soundly tonight not worrying anymore about it. truenorth

Solve : Applications/System Restore Won't Open?

Answer»

Apologies of this has been asked before, I've had a search and couldn't find the answer sadly.

We've a laptop RUNNING Vista which had a virus, I was fairly sure I'd fixed it as the laptop was back up and running although annoyingly whenever you opened Firefox it asked me to choose an application to open the file and gave me the options of Explorer or Firefox? Someone suggested I try a system restore, but it won't open it and gives me the same options of Explorer or Firefox?

Any ideas/hints welcomed!

Thanks in advance  Quote from: Stuck Noob on July 23, 2011, 02:27:40 PM

whenever you opened Firefox it asked me to choose an application to open the file and gave me the options of Explorer or Firefox?

Can you please explain EXACTLY what you do and what happens?I click on the quick launch icon for Firefox, and a box opens up SAYING

'choose the programme you want to open this file'

Followed by

File: Firefox.exe

It then gives me the option of Firefox or Explorer or

If the programme you want is not in the list or on your computer you can look for the appropriate progamme on the web

Does this happen with all programs or just Firefox?

Use the file association FIXER to repair the .exe associations and any other associations that don't workIt happens with all programmes. Same with system restore which is what I want to doSorry - meant to post this link in my previous thread:
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/file-association-fixer-for-windows-7-vista-releasedI'm not sure if that will open once I've downloaded it. I can't open Housecall (as an example), I get the same box open as previously describedIt should work fine but here - use this instead: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505I've just TRIED that, the only difference is it now gives me more of a choice of programmes when I try to start Firefox, and it still won't LET me open applications such as Housecall or System Restore  Okay - we're going to find one of these that works for you . The problem is simple - you just need to fix the file association. I'm trying to give you automatic fixes. Solve : Windows7 folder display..?

Answer»

Greetings from Florida! Thank you for all your wonderful information!! I am RUNNING windows 7 and initially when OPENING 'my documents' or 'my pictures' the folders/files would show a PREVIEW of the contents. Now, only 'my pictures' show preview of the contents.   I'm unsure of how I changed that..and certainly now more unsure after clicking this & that in an effort 'fix it back'.. Also, I have now noticed that when I hold mouse pointer on a document that has been minimized on my DESK top, instead of showing show the document in progress, I am only able to VIEW the program icon.. I am grateful for any and all your help!

Solve : How to free up disc space in c drive??

Answer»

I wanted to know how i can free up space in c drive by deleting unnecessary windows files and folders & other unnecessary files stored in windows installation DIRECTORY. I am asking this because unknowingly i must not delete an important file. Stay AWAY from the Windows directories...not a good way to free up space...
Instead concentrate on movie files...Pics...and MUSIC...all of which can be burned/backed up to CD/DVD's...System Restore, Hibernation, Temporary Internet files and the recycle bin are usually the biggest hd hogs. You can download and run treesize to see where space is being used (http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/). But as patio says - uninstalling files from Windows folders will guaranty problems. To start with the BASICS, have you done disk cleanup?  In win 7 it's under system tools.  In XP it was under accessories.  Don't know where it is in Vista, but probably under one of the two.

Solve : Problem with two firefox windows opening at startup.?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I just recovered my machine through the recovery partition on the hdd. Just after installing firefox 4 beta version, two windows of that OPENS any time i start my machine. I have checked through my startup items but nothing of that sort have been registered as a startup item. I don't know whether if it has GOT something to do with a configuration from the browser it self. Any help to make this not startup again?FireFox should not be in the startup group...UNLESS you have it there...also with new version updates a firefox page loads by default...until you close it out.Unless you have anything important in Firefox, i would suggest uninstalling firefox then reinstalling. This should definetely get rid of the problem though in a sort of roundabout way. You might even be able to save settings like bookmarks and so on when uninstalling. Not sure about this though.patio, i have checked in the startup FOLDER located in the start MENU and also have used Tuneup startup manager also to check but nothing of that sort is there. I think i agree with Roguebantha, i would uninstall and install it back but my worry is my bookmarks. Guys thank u!You can always backup your bookmarks

Find your profile in c:\Documents and Settings\[your user name]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

You should find a folder in there with your bookmarks. Back them up to say your desktop, then uninstall firefox. Then re-install Firefox and when installed check the same folder... there will be a new folder 'bookmarks' with nothing in it.. delete that and copy in the folder you saved before. Make sure there is only one folder called 'bookmarks' with all your bookmarks in. BTW ...Mozback works real good for this...Free...and it works for Thunderbird as well...

Solve : What's Taking Up All the Disk Space??

Answer»

This is specifically about a USB stick in Win 7, but I bet it's a larger issue.

I put my stick in (!) today and tried to copy a folder, but was told there was no room on the stick.

What? There's hardly anything on it!

If I look at the stick in Windows Explorer, I see a small abandoned temp file and and two subdirectories:

The subdirectories don't have much in them:
        |

But apparently Windows THINKS there's a lot on this disk:

Now, before you can SAY "Hidden files":

AND I have the "protected files" SHOWING, so anything weird ought to pop up, yes?

It's not important - I will either just "wipe EMPTY space" in cCleaner or reformat. I just don't understand what's the cause of this.

Thanks!USB devices can be annoying. That was true before Windows 7 came along.
What about other USB sticks?
What it you put it in another PC?
Was the thing formatted in Win 7 ?

I assume USB stick is larger than 128MB?
All I can think of is FAT (FAT16) format has limited Volume size.  Format to FAT32.It's showing as a 120MG stik....
Thats kinda small...and how large was the file you were transferring ? ?It is a 128 stick (it was a gift from a client, most likely formatted in XP). I didn't try the "usual" troubleshooting (other machines, other sticks), as I'm not really concerned about this specific instance. I was just wondering if there was a particular reason why something like this would happen. I mean, in most instances you wouldn't notice something taking up 120MB of "ghost" space, but here I did.

So more curious than anything else.run chkdsk on the drive. There are likely lost chains consuming space that aren't connected to any files. It's 128 MG...no wonder it's out of space. Quote from: patio on June 29, 2011, 05:44:56 PM

It's 128 MG...no wonder it's out of space.
Right, those milligram drives don't hold much. Quote from: patio on June 29, 2011, 05:44:56 PM

2MB of space is used.

The rest is STILL allocated, and unusable for new files. Quote from: patio on June 29, 2011, 05:44:56 PM

? You're missing the point.

I will try chkdsk. What causes THAT?

Thanks! Quote
What causes THAT?
Morphy's Law
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murphy%27s_lawAnd I know the 128 mg drive is too small. The 4KG drive gets heavy after a while.

I think I'm going to get one in the 1 - 2 tbsp range and see if that works. Usually I just need to share a pinch of data.A 2 GB flash drive is good for just a pinch of data..
For under $20 they will engrave your name on it.

In my EXPERIENCE, Flash drives vary in duality. So by more that one.Obviously my puns weren't measuring up....

Hey - ran chkdsk, still telling me there's lots of space being taken up by something(s).

What? Where?

Quote from: rjbinney on July 26, 2011, 12:21:59 PM
Obviously my puns weren't measuring up....

Hey - ran chkdsk, still telling me there's lots of space being taken up by something(s).

delete the files that are now in the FOUND.000 folder on the flash drive. It might be hidden.

What happened here was the space was taken up by Lost chains.

A basic explanation of it is that as files are allocated, the system finds a empty area, marks it as used by the file, and if it still needs more clusters to finish storing the file, it will keep looking, and then basically put a marker at the end of the other one that says "there is more data over Here" and include a pointer to the next cluster.

Lost chains are what you get when there are bits of files that are no longer being referenced- that is, there are chains of clusters storing file data, but no other chains say "there is more data here" and the File table doesn't actually use it. These are still allocated, and there is no way to delete them- chkdsk can find these, and can either delete them (if you press N) or convert them to individual files (if you press Y) typically, the files that result are each a single cluster  (usually 4KB or so) and if you want to reconstruct it it would be like putting together a puzzle with a million extra pieces. I know because I actually had to reconstruct/recover some source code files from a flash drive that had similar symptoms.

Let's try some basic troubleshooting:

1) To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

2) To run checkdisk, right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

3) Download and run aswmbr.exe (http://public.avast.com/~gmerek/aswMBR.htm). When it asks if you want to INSTALL Avast just say no.

2 & 3 assume you can get into safe mode, which you say you can

I have noticed almost everyone tells them to go to the device manager and check the "sound, video and game controllers tab" to check the status.  I don't have that option under device manager.  The only sound option I have found is under the control panel "Hardware and Sound" and that tab only lets me adjust the volume and change the default sounds.  So after that I'm stuck as far as what to do.  So frusturating. Just a thought ..... perhaps no sound drivers are installed or if it has, it's broke somehow?

HP dv6000 notebook is what you have? Then try installing (or reinstalling) the Conexant High-Definition Audio Driver to see if it helps any if you haven't already attempted to do so.I tried downloading the Conexant Audio Driver, before it was able to finish downloading I got the error message "Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver".  Any ideas??? Quote

sound, video and game controllers
Do you mean you don't see this option under device manager? It could probably be that its broken as previously mentioned. Here is a overview of the device manager....

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windowsvista/f/opendmvista.htm

It may help you understand what everyone is asking you to check.

Yes in the Device Manager I have no option that says "sound video and game controllers".  So is my computer pretty much busted?  I've only had it 2 years. An addon sound card would be the least EXPENSIVE solution...How much do those run?  And that would for SURE fix my problem?

Solve : How can I do BCD edit? Easy?

Answer»

How can I do BCD edit? You know, the thing that changes the boot order in a dual-boot Vista or 7 OS that also has another OS on the same drive e. Mine have XP.
I did this once, but I think the free tool is no longer available.
So I looked at the command list. Oh NO!
I don't think I have every found it so hard to do something so simple. It is like going to a store and asking for finger nail clippers and they sell you a Swiss POCKET knife.

I found this LINK:

But first you have to read this:

Heavy reading gives me insomnia, so I beg you, is there an easy WAY? And no. I do n;t want to buy anything. I just want to CHANGE the boot order. PLEASE!http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Visual-BCD.shtml

So ive been recieveing this battery error message when I start my computer, so I went and got the batery for a quick fix. BUT GUESS WHAT? Now windows wont start, my computer restarts every time it goes to load, So thinking itd be smart to format the hard drive and reinstall windows 7, It will not work the hard drive does not SHOW up AT ALL. I switched 2 sata cables thinking it'd be a connection problem. NOPE. And then I tried useing a PATA hard drive and that wont work either. I tried installing windows XP 64 bit and it gives me the BSOD (blue screan of death) every time I try to install. I checked all the wiring and its fine, I also tried putting my old battery in and that didnt work either. Nothing is semming to work. HELP PLEASE! D: Quote

No. If you have nay trouble with the hard drive, buy a new drive.
Ordinary HDDs are  cheaper that ever.
Yes, you can salvage the drive, but do not use it again for a system drive. The symptoms you describe are not trivial or minor. It sounds like big-time failure.Areu sure I have too? And if I do, can I buy an external hard drive and install the os onto it? Ex. 500 gbs and still use it for storage at the same time? No. you cannot install XP, or any version of windows for that matter, on an external USB drive. You can install Linux, though.
If you have an external hard drive at hand that you want to use, unscrew the enclosure, take out the SATA drive and PUT it into your PC (2.5 inch drives are required for most laptops.) Quote from: Transfusion on July 31, 2011, 03:55:27 AM

This never works...well sometimes rarely...
What are your goals for this machine here ? ?Thanks for your replies EVERYONE. The "raid" Settings were on in the bios so it wasnt detecting the SATA hard drive. After turning it off, I was able to use my old hard drive and install windows on it. Darn raid!

Solve : I cant hear sound from youtube. Could it have something to do with cookies??

Answer»

While I still have internet which is good, I still have no sound on youtube. Now I know that its been posted about me installing sound drivers and stuff but could it have something to do with cookies. When the cookies are blocked, doesnt that screw up your computer? I dont know if my cookies are blocked, but maybe thats why I cant get sound on youtube. What would I have to do to SEE what cookies I have and to unblock some of those cookies to get sound back on youtube, dailymotion, hulu etc.?Troubleshoot audio using this link -> http://www.mydigitallife.info/solution-to-fix-youtube-or-other-embedded-flash-video-no-sound-in-external-websites/Thanks for your help. The thing is that half way down the link that you gave me, number 3 about the settings, it says video.google.com. Well when I do it for a youtube video, it says- s.ytimg.com. How do I get rid of that because I cant see any solution on the adobe flash player website. That's youtube images. Have you followed and finished the suggestion given on that link?Yes, I tried but theres still no sound. I dont know what else to do because I've done everything else. The website I gave you above is still there.  I've never heard of the website before and I dont know how to get rid of it.  I thought I deleted it and even restarted my computer but theres still no sound. is there sound when you try to play something on your computer (i.e., an mp3 file  with windows media player?) or is this just a web problem?Theres no sound with anything. Now this is interesting. I opened up Realplayer and I got youtube on there and I have sound too. Its weird. So now if I want youtube videos, I guess I have to open up Realplayer. The thing is on realplayer when I open youtube it works fine. I get the videos fine, the sound is fine, etc. Thats very weird isnt it?what browser were you using to watch youtube videos (when you first started having no sound?) Firefox, internet explorer or something else?

Try a different browser than the one you normally USE to see what happens, APPARENTLY your sound card is working fine on your computer. You may need to reinstall the latest version of Adobe Flash. Your media player might have set as DEFAULT causing to affect certain glitch. Watching Youtube videos on my end is direct access to browsers and not to any real or media players. I have the latest adobe flash player.  Im SORRY to come off like a total idiot but when you say that "my media player might have set as default causing to affect certain glitch" what does that mean? How would I be able to change it,  if I have to change it?1. Youtube should not have anything to do with any media player, it's a website.

2. You sure you don't have youtube muted by accident when in Internet explorer 8?

3. You can try resetting internet explorer 8

4. If that Internet explorer still not working right with youtube, I would try installing Google Chrome and see if youtube works properly this time. Chrome already has flash player bundled with it, so you don't need get the standalone plugin installer.

I see when you used realplayer and there was sound.,,, just some suggestions here ,,, hopefully something works out for you.

Real media player allows you to stream, download videos and act as a media browser. Other users are also having the same issue on playing YT videos either on browser or their installed media player. http://www.longtailvideo.com/support/forums/jw-player/bug-reports/9221/youtube-videos-are-without-sound Quote from: 2x3i5x on July 29, 2011, 12:14:01 AM

Solve : BSOD cannot start windows?

Answer»

I have been running a Dell 530S for almost 4 years with vista, four days ago i installed windows updates through the windows update program installed on my computer. three days ago i RECEIVED the first BSOD with the following error MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, since then i have been unable to start windows even in SAFE mode. I get several different BSOD messages including BAD_POOL_CALLER, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. I have run a boot system test (F12) on the partition the extended test (3 hours)with no errors, MEMORY test came back with a memory compare error, I need to know what to do next.If the BSOD's are random in order and headings...as it appears they are that points to 2 possible culprits...
PSU or RAM.

Borrow a known good PSU of the same or greater WATTAGE and swap it in there overnite...

For the RAM DLoad MemTest and follow the info at their site for creating a bootable CD...
Let it run at least 2 hours...

Sounds like bad RAM to me though...Running MemTest86 version 4.0 now it is showing all test failing over 50000 errors and only running 15 minutes. This doesn't seem rightYou have at least 1 stik of bad RAM.i have 4 memory sticks Dell help says before i remove 2 and 4 i need to take out the battery and a PCI 16 card is this neccessary, or can i just remove the memory cards and test them individually in slot 1after running memtest86 i removed a bad memory stick and all is well now thanks for all the help. Are you sure it's the memory module or not just a bad slot or dust in the slot?
BTW, RAM Slot#1 (Item 3 in the pic) is the one CLOSEST to the CPU.

Solve : HDMI from T.V. to PC Display Failure?

Answer»

So here is my problem,

My Graphics card has 3 slots, two DVI and one HDMI.  I have both DVIs connected to my monitors, but when I try to connect the HDMI to my T.V. all the screens turn black and display won't come back, not even after disconnecting DVIs.  HDMI WORKS with the monitors but not with the T.V., I was thinking it might be an issue with LATE response form the T.V. to the computer? or maybe a drivers issue?.. I did my research but couldn't find anything that solved the probelm.  please help

(Windows 7)
Some motherboards/graphics cards don't allow simultaneous output.
"The Radeon HD 4200 supports HDMI, DISPLAYPORT (if integrated) and DVI. HDCP support is native to the Radeon HD 4200's video controller, so it's fully compatible with high-definition content played over Blu-ray discs. Within the AMD 785G are two independent display controllers, one digital (DVI/DP/HDMI) and one analog for displays. Depending on the manufacturers board-level implementation, the 785G will easily support dual monitors (one analog and one digital)."
So it is a chipset limitation.

Solve : Windows Vista Home Basic Activation Key error?

Answer»

I am using an old Lenovo (IBM) T40p THINKPAD and have installed Windows Vista Home Basic on it. The disc has a Key and I have repeatedly tried to activate the OS using this key but it always gives me this error
0xC004E003.

I googled this and was directed to a site for a REGISTRY cleaner (Little Registry Cleaner) which I installed and used to scan my laptop with. It found some errors and repaired them, but the error still occurs. I also read on some other sites that it really does have to do with the registry.

Questions:
How can I fix this (if at all)?
If I don't fix it, will Windows really stop working (I ASK because it says it COULD stop working, not that it definitely will stop).
Hope someone can help me out, thanks.Try the STEPS shown here

Solve : Internet randomly stops working?

Answer»

Sometimes, while I'm just going on the internet, my internet will just randomly stop working. After fiddling around, I found out that if I disconnect and RECONNECT the internet cord (at least I think that's what it is), the internet will start working again. This happens a lot more often if I watch a video on Youtube (and Youtube only), and I've recently found out playing Fusion Fall creates the same effect. This is a major annoyance for me and I have no clue how to stop it. Does anyone have an idea what's the problem? Also, I don't know what kind of settings my computer has, nor do I know how to find out. Quote from: Reversinator on July 29, 2011, 02:22:59 PM

problem started a few days ago, when i noticed an incredibly long wait time for the welcome screen, and when it FINALLY started, a message in the toolbar popped up with the message could not connect to the system EVENT notification service

tried several fixes already, including an older version of registry, the netsh winsock reset command and also sfc scannow command, but none of them works and the problem persists

any idea how to fix this? thanksThis solution is related to Vista however have a look at it and see if looks like something that might fix your issue.

Try updating them and run all your scans overnite and see if things improve...

If things don't improve i suggest our Virus and Spyware section...scanned with malwarebytes. no threats detectedI don't think this is a virus... I think you have some registry errors ( Thats how the services.msc usually changes. )
Can you run a repair on windows?

Solve : Error message keeps reappearing?

Answer»

Hi,

First of all, I'd like to apologize if this is in the wrong section, I do not know too much about computers but I THINK this is a software issue.  Thank you in advance for your help

Whenever I use my computer, a window opens that says "Error code 0x00000002: The system can not find the file specified."

I tried RESEARCHING and running a variety of programs but the problem doesn't SEEM to go away.

I am running Windows 7 Home premium (service pack 1) (64 bit) on a dell studio1558 with 6gb ram and an I5 processor.

Thanks again for all your help    1) What do you mean "whenever you use your computer"? EXACTLY when does the message appear?

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? Thanks for the response

1) What do you mean "whenever you use your computer"? EXACTLY when does the message appear?

A: It appears as soon as I log into my account and windows starts.  Its a little pop up, and if i close it, it reappears in a few seconds.

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

A: As far as I can tell everything is WORKING fine (besides this error popping up), I've ran a few scans and my computer seems to be clean.  Please boot to safe mode. Does the same thing happen? The error did not occur while in safe mode.  For some reason now, the error seems to appear a couple minutes after I've started windows.  I noticed that in safe mode I was not able to open google chrome, while I was able to open other programs (including other internet browsers).
Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three ITEMS) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
Hi,
Sorry for the late response

The error did not seem to appear with any of the selective boots.  One thing I have noticed recently is that the error appears when I open Google Chrome (it is usually the first thing I open, which is why I thought this error was appearing on boot).

Solve : Windows 7 is slow and freezing?

Answer»

My Windows 7 is freezing and slow
Hey,

I have Windows 7, and it's really freezing and slow. It won't even let me pull up my AV, or my Firefox. I am posting from my iPhone. I did a restore back to earlier today, and it didn't help. If I had a restore point for a few days ago, that probably would of helped. It all started yesterday. I only have one PC. I haven't been on my PC much, and when I did go on this is what I get. I even did a uninstall of Avast because it wouldn't update, and it's a mess. In the backup I have Avast back, but all messed up. The same for my Comodo firewall. From TIME to time I even get System errors.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium, but it's the upgrade version that I bought last year. I have too much data on the PC to wipe it clean. I also don't remember where I put my Windows 7. It required to have Vista on first then upgrade.

Could someone please help me on how to fix this mess?

Have you tried booting to Safe Mode?
I suspect some kind of hardware problem.  Are you prepared to run tests? Quote from: Computer_Commando on August 07, 2011, 05:40:53 PM

Yes, it can boot into Safe Mode. I don't really WANT to replace any hardware. Could I run the tests in Safe Mode?

It was installed with Vista, but I upgraded last year to Windows 7.You can test the hard drive with the drive makers software:  http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

I don't go inside of my PC. I'm sorry about that. How can I test it when I can't make it pass the Firefox page into Google? Could it be a virus/Trojan? Quote from: php111 on August 07, 2011, 06:03:11 PM

Take it to a shop.

What other options do we have? I don't have money to spend on a shop. I just PURCHASED the iPhone, and had it billed to my Verzion account.

I think it's kind of odd that one day my PC is working fine, and the NEXT day it's not.On what part does it go slow and part it freezes? Try removing Comodo firewall and reinstall Avast. Make sure you are keeping a backup installer. If you have other protection software installed such as spyware/malware scanner, please post them.
