Solve : A game reset my display settigs! Help?

Answer»

I just installed a game (Enemy Territory,Quake Wars) and it changed my display settings to low. Now I can't reset them because every thing is so big that I can't get to the OK box after resetting them to high in the display settings box. How do I fix this? I was able to get to REMOVE programs and removed the game. That didn't help. instead of clicking ok just press enter.I will hook it back up and try that, but there are other choices. OK, Cancel and Apply. I will GIVE it a shot. Quote from: I Shooter on February 22, 2010, 08:14:17 PM

OK is the default.

If your on a Pre-Vista Version of windows, you can also use Alt+O to "CLICK" the OK button.Thank you much for the information, I will try to REMEMBER that one. Thank you much for your time. That game also took away the cursor and took me to a page to get an up date. I could not use it because of no cursor and the arrow keys didn't work. Is there a work AROUND to get the up date? As I said before thank you much for your time and help.

Solve : Can't See CD/DVD Drives?

Answer»

I just upgraded to W7. It all WENT well but now I noticed I can't see my disk drives when I go into "COMPUTER". It lists all my hard drives/partitions but not disk drives. Is there some where else I should be looking for them?Open device manager. Any errors?
Look in Disk Management - are the drives there? One thing I just noticed, I had Windows Explorer open when I put a CD in and the drive appeared. I GUESS it doesn't show up until in USE. But that makes it hard to burn a CD unless I put the blank CD in first then drag the files to it. I'll have to check that out.Yep that worked. I put a blank CD in the drive to save some W7 updates and the drive appeared and I burned the files with no problems.

Solve : Vist 7/Acrobat reader 9.3?

Answer»

Hi,

On my laptop, i have v7. I have been TRYING to download acrobat reader 9.3, but the download STOPS at 7/12% with the message network connection failed. What do I have to do?

thanks

airEither try to download it from another site or try again another time. It has NOTHING to do with the OS.What is "VIST 7"?

There's no such thing as "acrobat reader 9.3". There is Acrobat 9.3, and Adobe Reader 9.3.

Reference: Adobe Releases 9.3 for Adobe Reader and Acrobat
thanks Allan.

Download Adobe Reader 9.3 (includes Acrobat.com on Adobe AIR). Another option is to download the full installer:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_adobe_reader/
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Adobe-Reader-Download-2572.htmlTry Foxit...smaller...and FREE.That, too.

However, I've had issue with Foxit opening up certain PDFs (particularly PDFs of Visio drawings)...thanks.

I have 'Word Works' as it came with my laptop. You need to change it from a .wps file to a .doc file. This can be done within 'word works'. You need to open the document in word works and then GO to 'save as'.
When the save box opens go to the bottom of the window where it says save as .wps, open up the box scrole down and save as a microsoft word 97 .doc file.
It is a pain as I have ran into this problem many times when trying to SEND documents to people who only have MS Word.

That easy.Uh guys?? Works 9 will both OPEN and SAVE now in .DOC format!! Also excel compatible etc etc.... Works 9 is COMPATIBLE with OFFICE !!!
Cool YEAH??? Now, I don't KNOW what VERSION of Works this fella has..... THAT could be the whole issue!

Solve : Lost H/drive space....?

Answer»
Hi folks
I have just lost about 4Gb of hard-drive space and I don't know why!
Just prior to this I had burned a DVD using Nero 7 Startsmart. The FILE copied where AVI & Nero recode files.
I'd burned them as Data files as nero wouldn't let me copy them 'as they were' 5 onto one 4.7G DVDR.
Being new to Nero (and computing generally) I am still finding out what it Will do. I realised from this that nero apparently recodes AVI files to normal dvd file to copy to a 4.7G disc. I started to copy one of these movies to a disc for a friend but wanted to WATCH another movie that was on my H/drive. The system crashed and I ABORTED the burn process. It was after watching my movie that I noticed I was about 4G down on free space. This is annoying as there is now only about 2G left on my D drive.
I've tried to find the offending data files but without success.

Can ANYONE give me any LEADS to regain my lost 4G of free space? No need to double Post...
Someone will be along shortly

Solve : Missing space on my computer... not just the regular stuff?

Answer»

I officially have 640 gigs of space on my hard drive... i know there is a DISCREPENCY with BINARY and language and stuff so that puts the ACTUAL space at 584 gigs on my C drive. Out of that I am missing about 160 gigs of space. Computer says I have filled 507/584 on my C drive and when I go into my C drive and hover over the USERS file it says it is 343 gb of space so that means somewhere in the other folders I have 163 gigs of space... of the otehr files none are significantly large except for the PROGRAMS files which only have about 10 gigs between them. The system restore has not been set up so I'm not losing space there... Where should I look? It's almost certainly the restore points (in the System Volume Information Folders). You can download TreeSize and see where everything is
http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtmlThanks that was it and the recycling bin has like 30 gigs of stuff i cant see, 74 gigs in the Ststem Volume Info... is there a way to REDUCE the sizes in these files? Solve : HDD with Vista installed??

Answer»

To UPDATE you all, I decided to put it in my ext.USB HDD case to explore it. First it was not recognised then Win asked if I wanted to 'Check disc & repair any bad sectors' so I did. This could not be carried out, after waiting 2 hours, then the result 'Too many bad sectors' I then d/loaded WDs diagnostic tool, with the same result. In for a penny etc, I decided to 'Write '0's to it..... Now nothing at all 'Dead!' So it is now consigned to the bin! You LIVE & learn... especially by your mistakes ie, 'Don't buy used HDDS'. Just an observation here, I have noticed new IDE/Pata, HDDs are much more EXPENSIVE now than they were, up to double the price of SATA drives, anyone know why? Anyway, thanks for all the help, Guys. BEST Wishes AlexmaWhen I tried to buy some after a power supply failure destroyed 3 of mine, the store said they are not the current technology and not stocked anymore. They had to call a few of their other locations to find them for me. And, yes, I did have to pay more for them than the price of a SATA drive.

You can still find bargains on them at places like http://www.surpluscomputers.com

Nero copies to the HDD before burning the DVD.

Since your COMPUTER crashed before the burn operation was complete, Nero did not have a chance to delete the intermediate files or ask you if you wanted to delete them.

If you have viruses you should be posting in the malware section.

Also, you are not supposed to be installing service packs while infected. He doesn't neccessarily have an infection...right now he has Driver issues...

Imran you need to track down the proper drivers for that network device...re-install them...re-boot and see if it detects the Network.

My guess would be that the chipset and all other appropiate Drivers were not installed after upgrading to Win7...

Agreed.

Unfortunately Dell does not appear to provide Vista or Windows 7 Drivers for that model, since it's designed for Windows XP; Additionally, Dell's own information states that the model is not compatible with either Vista or windows 7.

The driver page for the model does not allow the selection of Windows Vista or 7.

This explains the slow-down; a PC that just barely EDGES out the requirements for 7 that also is using default drivers is liable to have the "slowness" that is being experienced.

Solve : Freezing during start up?

Answer»

After logging in to my user profile, Vista FREEZES on the 'loading......' screen, with the blue background. It just freezes and I have to do a manual restart by hoilding down the on/off button on my pc. It will start up in SAFE mode after that and sometimes in normal mode. It's very INCONSISTENT though and usually takes me two or three attempts to get fully loaded in normal mode. Any help appreciated.

There was a post similar to this but it didn't seem to reach a conclusion. Try a clean boot (from within your profile open msconfig and choose "selective startup" - disable everything from loading - and reboot). Does it boot okay or is there still a PROBLEM?Go in safe mode and check if their is any virus program installaled in your comupter or go in safe mode, Then login with admin and do a clean boot that is disable the startup program and restart the COMPUTER.Quote from: Kings on February 22, 2010, 12:45:56 AM

Solve : Do I have a problem with Superantispyware??

Answer»

Hi -
I run Superanti spyware every week or two. The last couple of times I ran it, it seemed strange. Thus - Memory items - scanned 595 - Detected 0
Registry items - scanned 5879 - Detected 0
File items - scanned 170257 - Detected 330
At this point the program has ran for 2 hours and it seems to be stuck in a loop. It is running but no more items are scanned because the number never changes. I let it run for 2 more hours but nothing else changed. The 330 threats found were adware tracking cookies.
My question is: Is this normal OPERATION or is something wrong?
I am running vista Home Basic 32 bit Thanks BobI was having similar problems.

Note the name of the file that is being scanned when it hangs for a clue as to what is causing the problem.

Also check your Process Manager CPU usage and see if another process is contending against SAS. Once I saw something that was rising and falling in COMPARISON to SAS, i.e., CPU usage was always 100%, so whenever SAS dropped some percentage points, the other process rose to pick up the slack so that CPU usage never dropped before 100%.

I was able to use a Quick Scan to get the scan to complete. One item was detected and cleaned with this method.

Then try a Complete Scan. You might try limiting it to Drive C: to start with.

I was also able to get it past the sticking point with a Safe Mode scan.

You can also try scanning with another product like MalwareBytes Anti-Malware first.jkolak -
Thanks for the information. The next time I run my security I will try your suggestions. I'm also glad to know that I had a problem and it was not just my imagination. Thanks BobYou're welcome.

Let us know how it works out.jkolak -
Thanks to you I think everything is OK. I ran a quick scan. It ran for about an hour and found and removed 180 adware tracking cookies and said the scan was complete. Once in a while when I turn the computer on it COMES up very slow. Before the word "welcome" comes up I get a black screen with the pointer showing. It takes 1 minute and 20 seconds for the screen to go to "welcome". I have found that if I run Superantispyware it does away with the black screen and works normanly. I assume that one of the adware tracking cookies is causing the black screen.
I saved a print of all your suggestions and will use them if necessary. Thanks Bob jkolak -
After I ran a quick scan, the black screen after the "welcome" sign came back. So I ran the SAS in safe mode. This time it ran to completion and it apparently eliminated the problem with the black screen. I thank you for your help. Bob Good. I'm glad it worked out!

Solve : Netbook: upgrade or downgrade??

Answer» HI guys,

I RECENTLY purchased an acer aspire 751 netbook, with 2GB RAM, 250GB HD . It came with vista preinstalled. I'm not sure what the processor is, but I think it's a bog-standard netbook processor, nothing special. Anyway, the thing is an absolute nightmare because it is SO VERY SLOW. I suspect vista to be the main problem (and maybe some of the preinstalled virus software etc, but mostly vista...). Some people have told me to upgrade to Win 7, others have said that going to XP is a better idea. I could really do with some advice!

Aside from deciding whether to upgrade or downgrade-- I'm not sure how to APPROACH an OS installation on a machine with no disk drive! So details of how to do that would also be very much appreciated.

Thanks very much,
EllenContrary to what "some people" have told you, the OS makes very little difference. What, in particular, is slow? The computer is slow to respond to whatever I do, but particularly stuff like launching a browser (IE etc.) or opening DOCUMENTS. Sometimes it can't keep up when I'm typing and the text takes somewhere between 5-10 seconds to appear.Okay, two things. First, you should make sure you are malware free. Please do a full scan with BOTH your anti virus utility AND MalwareBytes. Then we can try a CLEAN boot and see what happens.

I truly don't understand what you did. What do you mean you saved "as 3 files in my 'Documents' folder"?? The way imaging works, if you save them to disc, is this:

1) You create a bootable CD from within the imaging program.
2) You create a BACKUP image and save it to cd(s) or dvd(s)
3) If you need to restore the image you boot to the bootable cd you CREATED which then takes you directly to the imaging program at boot. OR you open the imaging program from within the OS (with the first disc of the backup in the drive), click on RESTORE, and point it to the cd image. The program will then tell you it needs to reboot to complete the task
4) Follow the instructions on screen to restore the image from the cd(s) or dvd(s).I think the confusion came from trying to use the Windows Restore function instead of using Macrium Reflect.Allan -
Your answers have always been helpful. I will try it again. I seem to remember (not too good) that at one time when I was running the back up (and I did put it on 3 DVDs) it asked me for a file name and where I wanted it stored. That's how it got in my "Documents". However, I do have the 3 DVDs and I will try to run it again when I have time to play with it. Thanks BobOkay Bob.

When it asks where you "want it stored" the ANSWER, at least in your case, is on the dvd's, not the hd.jkolak -
You are right. I did not know that when I wanted to "restore" from the 3 DVDs that I could not use Windows. Live and learn!!! Bob Allan -
OK I think I have it correct now. Thanks BobYou cannot restore the system partition from within the OS, but you could restore other partitions from within Windows if you created separate images for each partition.Right. It's just a question of using the same software for the restore that you used for the backup.

Solve : Fatal System error when booting?

Answer»

Yesterday, I left my computer idle for an hour or so and when I returned the screen was black but the LEDs in the moniter were still projecting so I restated my computer by holding down the power button. When it booted it said there was a fatal error C000021A ( 0xc0000001 and 0xc01004b0). I ran the diagnosic and it said that the error could not be repaired. System Integrity Check and repair came up with: error 0x490. It also said something about a boot critical file corrupt. When I try to run the sysem restore it wont pop up. I ran all other tests possible. I can't EVEN get to my homescreen.
My questions is; Is there a way that I can fix this problem without loosing all the information on my harddrive. I have a lot of very important fils I do not want to loose. Please help

For starters... that is ridiculous and pointless. Read the message next time.

So I assume you cannot start in 'Safe MODE'. Have you got your OS disk? You may need to boot from that and the chances are you may have to lose some stuff.Duplicate postI managed to keep restarting until I could run it in safe mood. Problem is, it doesn't last very long. The moniter keeps going black at random. I though maybe SOMEONE was hijacking my computer so I unplugged the ethernet but the problem persists. The more I restart it the shorter the time gets before the display fails. I mangaged to put in my moniter disk and reisntalled the drivers. No help. Idk what is up. When was the last time, you cleaned inside the case?Do you have alot of files? It may have overloaded.

if not

Have you updated you're security and anti-virus recently?Do system restore from win re mode arrange for a os disk or you can do a custom installation. Install windows on same drive all your data will be backed up in windows.old folder and you can retrive it after installation from C: drive.

Solve : I've been Con'ed!!!?

Answer»

Well today my brother comes to me and tells me about his problem with his new laptop... i found out he recently had it serviced ( i dont know why because i usually solve most computer problems)

He tell's me he had a hard drive replaced and files relocated... but UPON inspection, (i was curious), i find that the hardrive appears to be the manufactures default one...(UNLIKE the seagate one the reciept claims it to be...

Anyone know if windows keeps a list of files that tell you when drivers are updated etc...

and do hardrives CARRY specific serials that bind themselves to the laptop themselves?

anyone able to shed light on this mystery?i have also noticed.. the files are dated back before the hardrive was "changed"... all signs point to the same hardrive.. which must of fell out.. and all he did was put it back in.. and charged for a new hardrive1) There's no reason he could not have gotten the exact same model drive.
2) The file dates would not change if the drive was cloned
3) Bind themselves to the laptop? I don't understand that.Allan..... #3.. I think he means like a cars VIN or something.. any way to tell from the HD's # if it was OEM or a "replacement".... Like dating a rifle by it's serial number? I'd be willing to guess no.. but some you guys know more so........A good practice is to return defective parts to the owner. Except when the old item has some "recycle" value. The FACT that they kept the drive is very speciousness. Contact your local district ATTORNEY. Do not confront the repair shop, unless the DA tells you to do that.
You should go to the manufacturers web site and see if you can find specific details about that model. With a serial number you may find what the machine had originally.

Why not SIMPLY use Windows search to find the file ? ?

The beautiful thing about command prompt is that if there is just 1 error it won't let you do what you are trying to do...this is called a learning curve...the file name is correct~ can u teach me hw to unhide the files?? i cannot search the files bcoz the files is already hidden~pls help~~ C:\users\users\attrib -a -h D:\Movie & Video is a wrong command
You need atrrib command, plus switches, plus folder/file path
Folder/file name must be in 8.3 format.
In your case:

attrib -a -h D:\Movie&~1You must use quotes around a file name with spaces like this

attrib -h "Cats and dogs.txt"

Solve : Giving credit where it's due..?

A few here have given me some pokes for slamming the great MS over things from time to time.. but just to show ya you're wrong, I don't always rag or diss em.. a few things...
Windows 7. So far, it's been great! Fast, CLEAN, no screwy monkey business. Other than an issue on e-mail "saving" since it doesn't come with an e-mail client..I never have been able to retrieve them.. it's been a SOLID program! So hopefully the ghost of Vista is gone from my machine! I feel I can count on this one again! New features are cool, and once USED to them they were "put there for a reason", IMPROVEMENT! Not "new for news sake".... just as it ought to be! Good for them... If this new system runs as good from now on, I hope they sell a zillion of them.. most pleased I've been since XP!
2nd.. Works.... neat little program... but saving to .wps left it an "orphan".... only usable with other works programs for the most part. Kind of a dumb move.... But now we have.... >>> TADA <<< Works "9"!!! Works 9 now can both open and save in wps or .DOC format!!! As a matter of fact, it's "Office Compatible" across the board!! Documents or Excel spreadsheets... can do em both! plus a "Powerpoint Viewer".... So those who don't NEED full Office, but DO need to go back and forth have a useful AND economical solution at last!! So..TWO moves in the RIGHT direction!!
3rd.. Media Center actually WORKS on this one!! Was watching old TV re-runs of Hawaii 5-0 the other day on it!! COOL!!!! Book em Danno!!

So there you have it... still going thru this thing, but so far.. Right on!!
Good job MS......

Best reason so far for going with Windows 7. The comment was meant to show that Media center actually WORKED on this system.. Solve : Proxy settings conflict..?

Answer» VISTA 32 had been OK with firefox and AVG downloads using Google Chrome. No connectivity issues in general. Have been studying web development and recently got into IIS and other server/web functions. Server has been set to off. Related or not, I am unable to open Firefox or AVG download. Big ol' hairy deal because AVG has always been good to me and recently got steered to McAfee by Comcast ISP.

Specifically, I do not know how to find/modify proxy settings.

Any help big fun!

Thanks Brainiacs

HammerWhy WOULD you think a proxy setting would affect a DLoaded file ? ?Thanks for the reply Patio. The reason I think a proxy setting would cause the problem is that in order for me to complete the INSTALL of AVG or to access Firefox I need to get to the IP address, as you know.

When I attempt to connect, I get an error message like "the proxy server is refusing connections to ..., check your proxy settings to correct the problem". I am paraphrasing for expediency. Error code OxEOO1CO4E
When I go to proxy settings port assignments are needed and this is beyond my understanding.

I went through the A+ manual ten years ago and built a Pentium based PC, the rest has been on LINE and self study with W3schools and OTHERS. Perhaps you could recommend some tools that might be useful in getting through my weaknesses.

You were a big help last time.

Thanks again. http://free.avg.com/download-file-ins-afg-free

try downloading AVG again but don't use downloaded manager.

Solve : Computer crashes all the time. I have tried a lot?

Answer»

Hi

my story
I have had my computer for about 3 years now, it's not a work of art, but it has never given any problems. I assembled it myself, so I know it pretty well. I switched to windows 7's evaluation build about a year ago and it worked fine until recently. About three months ago my computer started restarting and freezing.

It happens in ANY and all applications. It can take 5seconds or an hour. When I play games it normally FREEZES or restarts within 10minutes. It happens when I open IE, while I'm watching a dvd, while I'm playing a game or even when i'm just opening my documents.

By freeze I mean:
The screen blurrs and then doesn't change, whatever music or sound is playing sounds as if it's stuck, the numpad and caps keys don't change the lights on the keyboard, and the cursor doesn't move.

Sometimes after my computer has frozen or restarted it will freeze again in the middle of start-up.

NOTE: My computer never restarts or freezes when it is idle.

I've tried these things in the order below:

1)I updated all the drivers on the motherboard, sound and graphics card.

2)I downloaded speedfan so I can monitor all the temperatures

3)I replaced the old thermal paste on my CPU

4)I did numerous virus scans

5) I tried running the computer on the onboard graphics

6) I've reinstalled windows and tried to run my computer on all the default drivers.

7)I installed latest drivers again.

8)I opened my computer up and cleaned everything thoroughly.

9)I bought a new power supply after the voltages seemed to be the problem

Specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2200. (Dual core 2.2Ghz)

Thanks for the help!1) Go to System PROPERTIES - Advanced - STARTUP & Recovery Settings and uncheck "Automatically Restart". Next time there's an error your system should display a blue screen instead of rebooting. Post the ENTIRE contents of that screen here. If, however, the system still reboots, the problem is almost certain hardware related.

2) Open Task Manager to the Processes Tab. Double-click on the "cpu" title at the top of that column to sort with highest usage at the top. Next time the system freezes, see if the top task was hogging the cpu and if so tell us what it is.

3) What happens in safe mode? What happens with a clean boot?I allready had the setting to auto-restart disabled.

The CPU was acting normally while the computer froze.

SAFE MODE DIDN"T STOP THE PROBLEM! My computer just froze now

You also asked me about what my computer does during a clean boot.... It just boots normally. There are no problems. It only gives problems on startup straight after a crash.

new:::::
Could the problem be cause by malfunctioning RAM? I could try a different RAM module in the computer and see if it still gives the same problem. It doesn't hurt to try a different RAM module if you have one available. Eliminating possibilities never hurts.

If your computer never crashes after a clean boot, then you have something in startup or services that is crashing your computer.

Allan meant for you to watch the process manager and see if a process was at a high CPU percentage when the computer freezes.I hve been working on it this morning. I put a different RAM module in and the computer seems to be working fine.

Just on your previous post. My computer did crash after a clean boot, but only while I was using it. It never crashed while it was idle.

And when I opened task manager to view processes the application that I was busy using would be the one at the top. There was nothing strange to report.

I am going to try and clean my RAM chip quickly and see if that makes a difference. Otherwise I'll just have to order a new one. It might still be under warranty.

Thanks for your help, though!I hope that solves your problem. I recently had to clean both RAM and video card edge connectors to get a computer working right.

Please Help How do you import a file from Windows Task launcher WORD processor program into Yahoo E-Mail....This wasn't exactly worded properly...
What Word app..why from task launcher...why Yahoo ? ?I am a relatively new computer user---I only use Yahoo E-Mail---The only word processor program I use is the one that was installed on my computer when I got it--Microsoft's Task Launcher word processor program---I wanted to import a document I created into my Yahoo E-mail. Note I tried to use the E-Mail in the word processor program but it requested info I COULD not provide. I was able to import the file into Yahoo E-Mail but I could not open it up Any help would be appreciated.Ok, I see what you're talking about. You're USING the Microsoft Works Task Launcher to access the Works Word Processor.

It might be that you are saving the file as the wrong file type. When you're in Yahoo Mail, and you try to import a file, there should be a list of acceptable file TYPES that yahoo will allow for import. Go into Yahoo Mail and see if this list has a file type that you can save the file as in Works Word Processor.

Also, if Works Word Processor won't allow you to save the file as the file type you need, then try downloading OpenOffice.org. I believe I had this problem before and was able to overcome it by using OpenOffice.org.

Here is the link...
www.openoffice.org

Just click on, "I want to download".It does sound like you are using MS Works word processor. By default it saves files as .wps documents. When you go to save a file you can change it to a .DOC file which is the most common word processor format and shouldn't be a problem with Yahoo.

Also, unless the person your sending the file to has Works, they won't be able to open the file.

What is the blue screen error message?

For now, you can run a diagnostic on ram.Page fault in nonpaged areaYeah, I'd go with the memory diagnostic.Ran the test with both sticks in, with ONE stick in the first slot, then the other stick in the first slot, then repeated for the second slot. Each time the computer shut off in the middle of the test. You have 1 or more bad RAM sticks...I replaced both sticks with new Kingston Hyper X and still have the same problem.Did you have just one BSOD?

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.1. If you follow Broni's instructions, you should pick up the relevant information from all of the minidumps on your system. It will be interesting to see if there is a pattern to the dumps...

2. Memory Diagnostic.
a. Which one (and version, if known)?
b. How long did it run before shutting down (seconds, minutes, hours)?
c. Does it shutdown at the same place (test number, pass number, memory location) or is it a "random" shutdown?
d. Has the machine ever been "stable" in that memory configuration (type, size, voltage)?
e. Are you "overclocking" the machine?Windows Memory Diagnostic test
It runs 6 different parts and has not made it all the way through them. (ran many times)
Random shutdowns during different parts of the test.
The laptop has been stable for the two years I have had it. It has been using the same memory in the same configuration this whole time. It just started a couple of weeks ago.
Not overclocked.

Not the only BSOD. There have been many mini dumps. ==================================================

It looks like RAM issue.

A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

It will start up with just one stick, but before to long DUMP!
It crashes no matter which one of the four sticks I try.
Something new that started today, after the dump it doesn't always start back up. After it shuts off and I hit the power the power light and HDD light comes on for a second then everything shuts off again. If I leave it a minute then I can power it back on.

Thanks for all the help.Did you try different RAM slots?

Why would updates be an issue ? ?Quote from: soybean on February 14, 2010, 10:30:20 AM
If a computer fails WGA, then doesn't it no longer GET Windows Updates?

I have never had WGA on any of my PCs and they update just fine. And no, they are not cracked, either.

you need to have WGA for some of the downloads from the MS site, but that's it.

WGA itself was pushed as a "critical" update. it doesn't provide anything. First, you can get updates if you don't have WGA installed. all it needs is to be PROPERLY activated. an improperly activated install is what cannot download anything but critical updates.

Additionally, updates themselves aren't really an "advantage" the best you can hope for from windows update is for it to "smartly" install a driver for one of your devices so that it doesn't work anymore. People are all worried "Oh NO! I better stay up to date or haxxors will get me!" but it's a load of bologna; the "security" updates that MS distributes would only effect a small portion of customers. Specific ports need to be open... "OH NO! if port X is open and you have Y program installed and the clock rolls over then somebody can remotely view the size of the files on your C: drive!" esoteric, useless stuff that almost always requires both very specific conditions, as well as not really revealing a lot to supposed "intruders".BC_Programmer,
That sounds a lot LIKE the rants once heard about seat belts. Who cares, even if MS pays me I won't use their garbage.Quote from: MacPC on February 19, 2010, 12:45:34 AM

Solve : Windows 7 on vmware fusion.?

Answer»

Hi, I don't have a question. I just want to share something funny with you guys about Windows 7. Just for FUN, I got a Windows 7 Pro disk. When I installed it on my PC, it is Windows 7 Pro BUT when I install it on VMWare Fusion on my Mac, it gave me a list of all editions of Windows 7, from starter to ultimate, I can choose whatever edition I want. Strange. :} You have to choose the edition that matched your product key. MS has been using a one DVD installation disc since Vista.several WTFs stick out for me.

first, people don't buy Operating System Discs for fun. Installing a operating system or reinstalling a operating system is a menial chore. I suppose you also install AOL "for fun" and play the games that come in those GENERAL mills cereal boxes (on that note does anybody have the monopoly disc? I would trade a WHOLE ONION to anybody who can get me one I'm sorry.... a half onion. I just took a bite and it's making me cry). And what's next? Are you going to play games for "fun" and go to theme parks for "fun" and... oh *censored* nevermind.

Second, you SAY "I can choose whatever edition I want" but really, have you actually selected and tried to install any edition aside professional? Or did you make the (understandable but mildly foolish) assumption that the listbox allowed you to choose all available options rather then the Professional and "below" editions that the Pro License entitled you to install?

ADDITIONALLY, the use of the moustache smiley with an UPSIDE-DOWN moustache... or possibly a cat grin.... or maybe the real *censored* is that the smiley is ambiguous at all! that's right! I'm on a crusade against ambiguous smileys! I'm also a member of the PPOGTP, or "Preservers of parentheses and other grouping type punctuation" So I can say with some passion that when I see the use of a standard smiley at the end of a parentheses, It brings a tear to my eye. On the other hand, I always have a tear in my eye on account of my odd addiction to raw onions. (therapy is progressing nicely, by the way, I no longer rip up crab grass on my lawn in the hopse that they might be onions)

And lastly, and perhaps the biggest of all, is the sense of humour. I personally find a bag of onions falling on the floor and crushing a box full of small kittens to be more humourous then this. Although I must admit that they both bring a happy tear to my eye.

P.S: regarding the monopoly deal, I have no willpower. I finished the onion. I'm a monster! We're on a roll today (I promise not to misuse any parentheses)!I have an original Monopoly disc i'll trade for an Onion...

But it has to be a Vidalia over 6 ounces...Quote from: jkolak on February 19, 2010, 02:17:43 PM

We're on a roll today (I promise not to misuse any parentheses)!

And don't get me started on ellipsis...

Answer»

hi sir
how to make copy one dvd to another dvd in window 7. To use of nero easy to make a copy of one dvd to another dvd but WINDOE 7 has not support to the nero.
Of course you can install Nero in Windows 7, but there are also any number of utilities you can use for disk copy (Google)Nero works on MINE... NERO9 lite... but don't do the registeration...on mine if you do, it screws up somehow, and won't finish the install. If you do NOT register(it's a free VERSION anyway) it prompts you to occasionally, just click remind me later and MOVE on.....

Solve : dos, win98,win xp based plc programm runnuing on vista?

Answer»

hello everyone
i need help to run the cnc- plc developing programme on vista operating system.pl. note that these cnc prog are on dos, win98 and win xp based. i thing to run these program on Vista some setting is required in setver, config.sys and ansi.sys files.

[emailprotected]

email addy REMOVED to prevent SPAM.Vista still has these 3 files for backwards compatibility.

Is there any reason why you have not been able to just install the program normally like you would under XP?

If it doesn't work, you can right click the program for the Properties box and set the compatibility mode for XP or 98.

If neither of those work, then you would have to try SOMETHING like VIRTUALBOX to run XP or 98 under Vista. No NT OS supports the Autoexec.bat, config.sys. Only 32-bit EDITIONS have the 16-bit "setver" program.

it does however have autoexec.nt and config.nt for DOS-based applications. The SETUP program probably created a autoexec.bat and config.sys file in the root of the system drive; simply copy or cut the contents of these files into your autoexec.nt and config.nt files. (or if there are no .nt files simply rename them)

Solve : Windows "Explorer.exe"?

Answer»

Ive been trying to resolve my problem for a few days now, Ive been in and out of the chat but Ive not come to any conclusion. I'm having a problem after i log on, i am running windows Vista. After typing in my password, the screen stays blank black(cannot see icons, start, wallpaper ect) but sometimes loads "My Computer" or "My Pictures". This is the ADMIN account i am on, and i can access task manager via CTL+ALT+DEL. Ive tried numerous scans, online and boot scans. Ive also tried vista rescue and recovery, and downloaded vista recovery discs, no luck. I have about 10 gigs i need off here so before i do a restore, i need these files. I try to File>Run through the task manager and start "explorer.exe" but it just brings up "My Computer". Any suggestions will be MUCH appreciated im a bit stressed this is a new computer. Ill be checking this FREQUENTLY. Thanks again, ty.Slave Drive Tutorial...
To retrieve your important data...

Then we can move on to fixing your issues...Ok, is there anything i can try with this so far? I dont have an extra hdd for backup, and there is no system restore points on this machine. Do you have Vista DVD?No i was not given anything with the system, all i have is a Vista recovery disc that i downloaded and tried, but no luckIf you could borrow one, we could run Vista repair installation.
If this is not an option, I guess patio's advice is your only option.Ok, well ive tried Vistas integrated repair options, and also free downloaded recovery discs and no luck. I really want to try everything i possibly can before i go out and buy a new hdd for backup. I really dont want to spend more money then i already have on this thing. You don't have to buy anything for retrieving your data...
All you need is to follow the guide i posted on a working Desktop machine with enough free hard drive space and a burner to transfer your data...

I NEVER suggested buying a new drive...this would lead me to believe you only "skimmed" the info...No, Vista repair, using Vista DVD is a totally different process.
You can take a look here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.htmlQuote from: patio on February 20, 2010, 11:02:17 PM

I do not have a second machine, therefore, id have to buy another hdd? The site suggests i put it in another machine with another hdd correct? The very last thing i want to do is put my hands in this brand new machine, but if i have to i will. I'm looking for any suggestions that could possibly fix my machine without going through this process, but by the sounds of it so far, that might be my only option. Then follow Broni's advice above on doing a Vista Repair install...
There's more than 1 way to skin a cat...
However i got from your previous posts that data retrieval was goal #1...
Carry on...Vista repair install will keep data safe, but he needs Vista DVD to do it.Quote from: Resurge on February 20, 2010, 09:47:00 PM

Does it do the same thing in safe mode?

On the times that "My Computer" shows up, can you get to the stuff that you want to save? If so, I would suggest burning it to CDs or DVDs or a flash drive. Then, if your computer has a recovery partition you can take it back to factory settings.

If you cant do this, you could boot to a Linux CD and save your data. That is, if you have another optical drive or have a flash drive.

Of course, you would need another computer to download and burn a Linux CD.
How are you posting your messages? Are you using your cell phone? Do you have access to any other computers? If not, your local library may let your download and burn a Linux CD.

How do I get a 100% free anti virus program and how do I delete the ones that dont work???every few minutes i have something pop up that tells me i have viruses but EVERYTHING wants me to pay for an upgrade.. thats not what i want to do can someone help me figure out how to get rid of all these viruses!!!!!You are infected with what is known as "rogue" programs that only want to seperate you from your hard earned money and are worthless...

Clik Here... and FOLLOW the instructions...ok ive checked that out but i dont have windows xp nor do i have that sp whatever that is lol i must be slow because those directions CONFUSED the heck out of meThey are not as confusing as you think///try taking them 1 STEP at a time...how do i uninstall all the existing anitvirus programseverything i am seeing is about windows xp i have windows vista am i missing something here? The instructions are the same for Vista...there should actually be very little difference at all.ok so how do i remove all the existing anitvirus programsThe instructions on that page are very detailed and complete.
They are an accumulation of many peoples' time and efforts over the past 5 or 6 YEARS and have been tweaked and tested by some of the best in the business.

That being said as i stated earlier take it 1 step at a time...all the info is there.
ok i have come to the step about installing the ccleaner..it is asking me to pay for it. im not installing anything i have to pay for is there something else i can use?Wrong download...CCleaner is FREE.
Again you need to take it 1 step at a time and pay attention to the info given....

Solve : any reason why I should keep W7???

Nope. Get a Mac or switch to Linux.

Fantastic, MS got a bunch of suckers to work for them for free!! Brilliant indeed. Perhaps Toyota should FOLLOW the same idea and ask all its customers to test the brakes and the steering system on the highway.Quote from: MacPC on February 19, 2010, 12:54:42 AM

Just practicing being a jerk, or what? You already said "Vista, lol." What's your point?

These would be the logical fallacies "appeal to ignorance" and "begging the question." The former means to spout off something irrelevant instead of having a relevant retort; the latter means using "circular logic": A because of B -> why B? -> because of A.

tl;dr version: it's trolling.Boy!! Easy on the "heat" guys!! Just got the wife's new PC up and running, and she loves "7"! Compared to her Vista 64 laptop (year old) .. this thing is a hemi powered rod(real 426 hemi, not that "new" stuff)!! Got two running Windows 7, and all I can say is "they got it right"..... your opinion may vary.. but these two machines are on 24/7 and USED! Web browsing, email, video work, photo work, website building and maintenance, word processing etc.. not just facebook and solitaire!! LOL!! I may be hard at times on MS.. but not THIS time.

Further.... MAC is NOT always so "perfect".... I recently got one of those too (yes, at times we have FOUR computers running in here (Home business) and they BLEW it big time trying to "improve on iMovie6... iMovie8 was so BAD.... they offered free downloads of "6" to anyone who didn't like "8"!! I'm learning iMovie9 now (prerequisite to FinaCut Pro) and they took OUT some of the best features"because they wanted to make it easier for users" NOT!! Mac users got pissed they were screwed out of features that made it so GOOD "before".... iMovie9 is prety sophisticated stuff, but even I can see things they took out from "6" they should have left alone... maybe, like MS did in testing for "7".. they should have asked the CUSTOMER what he "wanted" and what WORKED!!! Customers as "suckers"? I think NOT! I'd rather be ASKED my opinion... that be handed somewthing less than functional because somebody ELSE decided what WE needed or liked.... sorry, was a SMART move on MS part this time......Quote

So, Microsoft can't win either way with this guy, who's about as funny as a screen door on a submarine.

Solve : What is object of putting a virus on me??

Answer»

Hi -
This is not a problem but I don't know of any place to get an answer to my question. Why would any one put a virus or malware in my computer? There is nothing in my computer that would be of any benefit to any one ELSE even if they downloaded everything. This may sound like a stupid question but I'm not too smart about computers. Bob Quote

There is nothing in my computer that would be of any benefit to any one else even if they downloaded everything.
But there is with a lot of people. Online banking pin numbers, credit card numbers, eBay/Paypal accounts, email passwords etc.

MONEY usually, depending on the type of malware.Bob, if there was a big pothole in the road right in front of your driveway, would you ask why someone put it there? Viruses and malware are generally not targeted to you specifically. They're a hazard of being on the Internet. Just as everyone who drives down that street encounters that pothole and needs to dodge it if they don't want to hit it, everyone on the internet is vulnerable and needs to take precautions. Viruses etc are written and planted by sick people who don't have a life, and who care LESS about anyone elses. As far as I am concerned, penalty for planting Viruses , malware etc ought to be death. and no, i'm not joking. The world is screwed up enough already.. some worthless piece of scum who'd do damage to millions of people "for a lark" doesn't deserve to BREATHE the same air we do. Right up there with child molesters, rapists etc.... good bye! When it comes to UN-Civil people, i'm not very "user friendly"!Quote from: Hankster58 on February 12, 2010, 01:17:28 PM

At the present time, the sick people are having what they want. Son they will be gone. But not because of a which-hunt. Neither you or I have the wisdom and power to wipe them from the face of the earth.Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 12, 2010, 01:24:34 PM

Did you mean to say "Soon they will be gone."? If so, I hope you're right, but how do you know? What's the basis for that statement? There is no basis for that statement...Exactly what I thought.Hi -
Thanks to the people who replied. There is a lot of things I don't understand. I can't believe I have enough of anything that would make it worth while for some one to try to get it. You explained it very well. I will keep running my security weekly. Thanks

The only thing I can think of would be old age.
Use your imagination.
Here are some things that hutr the bad guys as well as the good guys. But is some cases more for those who are the most aggressive.
War.
Revenge, from someone who was wronged.
Civil violence.
Drug abuse.
Suicide.
Automobile accident in a stolen vehicle.
Terrorist attack.
Capital punishment.
Behavior induced heath problems. (Fits of anger)
Act of God. (Struck by lightning on a clear day.)

I think he was referring to ME being "too aggressive".... I think not. We have way too much "EVIL" in the world.... maybe it's time the decent said enough and did AWAY with it.... what? Boy, I'm sorry I asked my question. Let's drop the whole thing. Bob

Solve : Upper Case and Lower Case?

Answer»

I am running Windows ULT 7 on a Sony All-in-one. I am doing some Web developemnt(Javascript) and I am fit to be tied.
If I have a file, ex: country.html. I OPEN it and then save as Country, then I go to the Folder and the file
is still named country.html. Same if I try renaming it. And, yes I am in the same Folder. ? while NTFS is case sensitive, Windows Explorer is not.

You can rename the file in command prompt if you NEED specific cases. http://www.sharewareconnection.com/change-case-of-file-names-software.htmI think the culprut was Prog Notepad 2. It automatically makes a BACKUP of each file I open in it. Won't let me change the
name while a backup exsists of the old file. I turned off "Make a BU file in Prog Notepad II. All is good. Thanks.

When are you getting this error? working in the IDE, after you try to add the Component to the toolbox, when you add it to a form, when you compile, or when you run it on ANOTHER machine?i GET this problem when i try debugging anything using COM. i can create new projects and use things i have made on other computers without COM. it's not even a point to try publishing stuff with COM in at the moment. i KNOW it wont work.Quote from: dfg09 on April 03, 2010, 01:50:59 AM

Hmm, well, I've made and consumed COM Components with mine, and It doesn't work unless I run Visual Studio as an administrator.

Also, just to be clear; Visual Studio let's you add the Shockwave componen, to the IDE, add it to the form, etc.... but gives that error when you try to run/debug it?

Solve : two operation systems?

Answer»

i had a VIRUS that rendered my computer useless. i re-installed windows, reformatting the hard drive and loosing all the data. i'm OK with that. now the RECOVERY drive has two operating SYSTEMS and its memory is full to 90% capacity. i don't know how this happened. i thought the first ( infected ) operating system would disappear with the reformatting of the hard drive. I NEED TO DELETE THE FIRST O/S. CAN ANYONE HELP?1) You did not format or the drive would have been completely erased.
2) I suggest you start again. Boot to the OS CD or DVD, CHOOSE the format option, format the drive, then install the new OS. If you WANT to be 100% certain you can also delete and then recreate the system partition prior to formatting.
3) Just a terminology correction if I may: Memory is ram. I believe you don't mean the "memory" is full to 90% but rather the hard drive is almost full.thanks for the info and i stand corrected on the terminology
