I have 4 GB installed, and found out 32 bit doesn't see it all.... Not sure what your asking... but with 4GB RAM you can have 64bit windowsNever mind...Answered my own Question!!! Found out at the Microsoft website/install advisor.... not going to reinstall everything AGAIN! to get 64 bit.... 32 bit here I come!!From what I hear it's not a bad idea until the industry gets more up to speed on 64 bit compatibility.I recently upgraded to windows 7 64 bit (from win 7 32 bit) because i upgraded from 2 to 4 gigs of ram. I've been RUNNING it for about 2 months now and everything is just fine. Although you cannot UPGRADE from vista 32 bit to 7 64 bit. Or from any 32 bit to any 64 bit. If you change from 32 to 64 bit you must do a clean reinstall. Quote from: jkolak on February 03, 2010, 12:48:08 PM From what I hear it's not a bad idea until the industry gets more up to speed on 64 bit compatibility. What you hear is not reliable.Quote What you hear is not reliable. +1Perhaps my information is a bit old now, but a year or two ago there were reports of several 32 bit apps that were broken on a 64 bit OS.Quote from: jkolak on February 05, 2010, 08:19:00 PM Perhaps my information is a bit old now, but a year or two ago there were reports of several 32 bit apps that were broken on a 64 bit OS. That is the fault of the creators of the 32-bit applications. And they should be properly ostracized.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 05, 2010, 08:55:24 PM That is the fault of the creators of the 32-bit applications. @Hankster58 Considering you have 4 GB of RAM installed in the system i would definitely recommend that you use a 64bit operating system. If you decide to install a 32bit operating system, it will not recognize all 4 Gigs of your RAM. As for worries about certain programs that will not run in 64bit windows, you will have to do some research. Usually device drivers for 32bit OS's will not install or run correctly on a 64bit OS. You must consider this if you decide to switch. Go to the manufacturer's website of all of your hardware and check to make they have a 64bit driver available. If they have those drivers available for your hardware then the next step is to make sure that the programs you use on a daily basis will run also. Although this shouldn't be a problem, you may run into some issues with certain programs. I know that iTunes is available in 32bit or 64bit. Mozilla will run in 64 bit without any problems. "Most programs designed for the 32bit version of Windows will work on the 64-bit version of Windows. Notable exceptions are many antivirus programs." --This is a quote directly from Microsoft's website. I suggest you check out this page for more information about how to decide if a 64bit OS is better for you: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/32-bit-and-64-bit-windows-frequently-asked-questionsOh and one more THING...If the information that I've GIVEN to you has proven to be helpful please be sure to thank me! Thanks!Been running both Vista 64 and Win7 64 ever since the BETA and i have yet to find an app that won't run on a 64bit OS... Other than some of my older Win98 legacy apps but those can even be muscled into working if you know what you're doing... So as far as apps not performing i'd say that's a red herring... Drivers are what the User should concern themselves with...not apps.Quote Drivers are what the User should concern themselves with...not apps +1 |

Solve : Regretful mistake?? |
Answer» I always check for available ROM chips before ANY flash...period.Quote from: jkolak on February 07, 2010, 08:26:51 AM I had thought that keeping the hardware firmware up-to-date was a important as keeping the OS, drivers, and software versions up-to-date. Depends what you mean by "up to date". A Windows software driver update is often a GOOD idea because code may be rewritten to be more efficient or to eliminate bugs but updating the BIOS firmware is something that may never need to be done during the lifetime of the hardware. One may find that a motherboard BIOS may need updating to cater for (say) a cpu model that was not released at the time the BIOS was written, but in general performing updates on a BIOS that is working fine, just for the sake of having the latest version number flash by at boot time, is not considered particularly wise, unless you have a backup chip around. I haven't flashed my DVD-RW drive since 2006. Quote from: Salmon Trout on February 07, 2010, 08:38:08 AM Depends what you mean by "up to date". I can see the sense in this when weighing in the relative risk of bricking the computer. Mostly you WANT to update "just in case" there are bug fixes that you don't know about. But if there are no symptoms, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".Quote from: jkolak on February 07, 2010, 08:43:29 AM Mostly you want to update "just in case" there are bug fixes that you don't know about. Read the BIOS version release notes and see if they apply to you. If not, don't bother. I updated my Shuttle to version FT62S00N because I installed a Prescott, but I don't need any of the later versions because none of the ISSUES addressed apply to my case. I never had any problems with XP SP2 that needed version FT62S00V. Code: [Select]Bios: FT62S011 Fixed sometimes FSB run 166MHz Bios: FT62S00Z Fixed sometimes detect Fsb(front side bus) irregularly at boot up. Bios: FT62S00X Fixed smart fan function failed after resume from S3. Bios: FT62S00V 1. Add Celeron D and Prescott E0-Stepping micro code. 2. Fixed system become unstable when install Prescott CPU with Windows XP SP2. Bios: FT62S00P Fixed connect TV&CRT, signal always out to TV. Bios: FT62S00N Add Prescott CPU support. Bios: FT62S00M Initial release.Quote from: jkolak on February 07, 2010, 08:26:51 AM Thanks for your post. I know it took you some time and effort to dig up the clips you quoted. Oh yes... I forgot to mention the source. "Upgrading and Repairing PCs, 15th ANNIVERSARY Edition". An excellent book. Re: keeping the BIOS up to date; it's really not all that important, actually. usually the best results from an updated BIOS is support of more CPUs. The important thing to remember is that the BIOS is almost never used after the POST; This is why the "Shadow RAM" features are now obsolete; All Windows Operating systems (with a few EXCEPTIONS) replaced the BIOS drivers with 32-bit versions; ergo, the BIOS code was never executed and thus having it in RAM for quick access was not advantageous. Aside from CPU support, the only other reason I can think of probably only applies to older PCs; that is, BIOS updates to support larger hard drive sizes.Note of caution: not all BIOS chips are socketed. If a motherboard with a soldered BIOS chip is bricked by a bad flash, extraction of the board and return to the manufacturer or possibly a repair company is the only option. |

Solve : Windows 7 starter- no admin set but asking for password? |
Answer» Thanks in advance. My son has an INSPIRON mini-10v with Windows 7 starter installed. There are 2 accounts set up. Unfortunately, both are as standard users. I'm trying to make some changes, but I get a user account box saying"Type administrator password and click'Yes' ". We have tried EVERY password we KNOW, to no avail. Since it's fairly new, I was just going to do a re-install. How do you do that with no cd slot, and without the security CLEARANCE to download and install anything? As you have tried every password you can think of, have you tried just pressing the enter button when it asks you for a password and see what happens.http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS304US305&q=forgot+administrator+passwordI have tried hitting enter, but to no avail. I can download programs but I cannot install them without administrator privileges. I assume almost every program will require admin privilege.... Okay, now I don't understand what you're doing. Are you getting into the user account? If so, is it an admin account? And if it is, when do you get that message?I have two users listed when I turn on the netbook. Both are listed as "standard users" when I look at the account info. My original project was to remove McAfee and install AVG. I can download, but I am prompted to"Enter an administrator password and click 'yes", before installing the program. No matter what I have typed as password so far, the 'yes' button does not come to the foreground (remains 'unclickable'). Dell suggests SENDING it in to be repaired or buying an external optical drive to reinstall Windows 7 starter.=]Enable Admin Account in Win7Thanks!! I'll give that a shot and post the results!!! |

Solve : pirated copy of windows 7? |
Answer» My grandson loaded a pirated copy of windows 7 on his computer. I know that to remove it I must reinstall Vista. I have purchased a legal copy of windows 7 so can I just reibstall that or must I do Vista first. He has been grounded from his pc for 2 weeks. If you want to uninstall the old version just boot to the new Windows disc and choose the option to format before installing. No need to install Vista.Agreed. 2 weeks is not long enough.... NO computer until he turns 18 Quote from: patio on February 07, 2010, 07:11:11 AM 2 weeks is not long enough....You couldn't leave well enough alone? Sorry...my parental instincts got the best of me...sheesh He is ALSO grounded for 2 weeks. This may not be the forum but I have a QUESTION. I asked him where he got the pirated copy and he told me a kid at school downloaded it from the internet and made him a copy. Where do they find this tuff on the internet and how do people get away with doing things like that?As soon as anything hits the street (sometimes before), the pirates have it posted on the internet. Microsoft and other copyright holders are very aggressive about removing these sites, but they proliferate on foreign SERVERS and P2P networks. They are very dangerous because besides the "attractive" software, they often include a little present in the form of a virus or trojan. If it was safe, you could have just changed your product key, but because it is not safe, you were advised to do a clean format of your computer. |

Solve : Large Hard Drive and W7? |
Answer» I'm liking W7 more and more all the time. I have 4 gigs of RAM running now. My Internet connection is a lot faster. The whole computer is a lot faster. I can access the XP partition and the old hard drive with XP on it from within 7. So I can transfer all the old files easily. I am having some issues with older software but most of it's going OK, the stuff that isn't it's time to upgrade. I've just changed recently, too, and I'm getting to like it myself. Especially the taskbar switching makes things so convenient. It's been a long DAY, 12 hours, of updating software, downloading files, trying this and deleting that. It's been well worth it. are you actually suggesting that a motherboard that is in such COMMON use with a chipset that is in even MORE common use has some sort of subtle bug that makes it impossible to use drives larger then 137GB? FIRST: the ORIGINAL issues with the size limit was not a "sloppy motherboard design by bogus engineers" but rather a limitation of the current standard at the time (before 48-bit LBA). I suppose they were supposed to preconceive the new version of ATA that supported 48-bit LBA, too, and build a controller for it on their motherboards. The reason the first release of XP didn't support 48-lba is probably the same reason that windows 95 didn't support the "HALT" instruction on laptops: it didn't always work. with SP1a when they enabled it hardware was finally working properly with 48-bit LBA so they could enable it without any ill effects. |

Answer» It turned back on. I was busy yesterday. It HAS to be something in bios. What? It's quite annoying.AH! I could just turn it off, then UNPLUG it! does that hurt computers?Nope. That's always an option. But as you SAY, don't pull the plug until the system is indeed OFF. One other option - USE a power strip (as I do on all systems). I have a power strip/serge protector, but it controls stuff I can't turn off.You could always get ANOTHER power strip. Doesn't have to be an expensive one.Unplugging is much easier. Solve : Does VB 6 still work on Windows 7?? |
Answer» If so, do you need to run it in XP mode or normal? I would like any info you can GIVE especially about 64 bit machines using 32 bit DLL's. Does VB 6 still work on Windows 7? Yes. Ideally you will create a manifest file for the compiled program that allows it to prompt to run as ADMIN. (Unless you don't USE any external COM objects, including ActiveX Controls while your at it, you MAY as well add in the Common controls manifest info so you can get the "new look"- this applies to XP as well. You cannot compile 64-bit ANYTHING with VB6. only 32-bit programs can access a 32-bit dll compiled with Visual Basic, as far as I'm aware. |

Solve : Windows will not start, every possible test has been run.? |
Answer» This has happened once before and was SOLVED by simply re-inserting the battery, but this time I've been at it for 4 or 5 days and still nothing. Windows has not STARTED on my Dell Inspiron 1750 since New Year's Eve, I've tried everything, let the battery run out to fully charge it again, run in safe mode (that won't even start), system restore, diagnostics tests, everything. Can't boot to safe mode, have tried to do so countless amounts of times, still nowhere.Yes, F8 works, I get to the menu, I can run ALL of the tests, without any problem. On pressing F8 I usually select 'Repair your computer' or whatever it says, and I get to the screen which allows me to System Restor or run Start Up repair and everything else. On running Start Up repair it tells me that no problem has been found. When I run System Restore it restarts when finished and the exact same problem re-occurs - black screen, no Windows. I put in the CD and absolutely nothing happened, as expected. The laptop is still MAKING all the sounds it makes when it's being used, the fan works, the dvd drive opens, there's just no picture at all, nothing is happening. I really can't explain this any better, it just isn't doing anything, and I really really really do not want to restore to factory settings like Dell recommends. You need to change the bios so the cd is the first device in your boot order, then boot to the cd.Okay, the CD loaded and I chose the Repair option. Gave me the same screen I'd been using to repair startup etc, this time it didn't tell me that there was no problem, it scanned and alerted me that it was going to restore to an earlier point. It did this then restarted, and I'm back to square one again, hello black screen. lalalaura - unless somebody has a better suggestion it sounds like you need to start all over and perform a rebuild. Following is what I'd suggest if you go this route.
like he said the most simple would be to back up and then to reinstall but the fact that you can get to the advance options means that the comp isn't dead just messed up like ALLAN said change the boot-up order for your computer in the bios settings. if you don't know how to do this you can find out in this forumQuote from: jgt1942 on January 06, 2010, 11:09:38 AM lalalaura - unless somebody has a better suggestion it sounds like you need to start all over and perform a rebuild. Solve : Cannot Accept Control messages At This Time? |
Answer» Hello guys (again) It has something to do with a root file being deleted. ShelExecuteEx is a root file. My sister had to reload her computer when it did that. You might want to weight and see if anybody can tell you else wise. If not well... BOOM. I'd back-up first. Thanks HELPHELP , just this second solved it, its the " Application information service" i had to backtrack what i had been doing today, and i had mistakenly set this service to manual, the service had already started, but i had stopped it, and set it to manual, and basically could not do a thing. But a few days ago, i had printed the default settings to the services in windows 7, and had kept a list of what services i changed, and noticed the mistake. To fix this you go into safe mode, and just start the service again, and set it to manual. http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/Services/Application_Information.htmGlad to help.I know a little about computers, but more about the mother board than the computer its self. Quote from: HELPHELP on February 22, 2010, 12:52:47 PM ShelExecuteEx is a root file. No, it's a FUNCTION in shell32.dll. The "Application Information Service" is a service added to Windows Vista and 7 to help support Elevation of processes. Basically, it stops a non-elevated program from being the parent process of a elevated program (which may introduce security flaws, in that the parent process can access parts of the elevated process that may violate security). Instead, when a program uses ShellExecuteEx/ShellExecute to run a program, the service is called and performs the execution. So, If the program is to be run elevated then the elevated program will be a child process of the service rather then the possibly untrustable program that called ShellExecute/ShellExecuteEx. Yes, sorry. But it is a root process that is needed for your computer to work properly.Quote from: HELPHELP on February 22, 2010, 05:19:55 PM Yes, sorry. But it is a root process that is needed for your computer to work properly. No. It's not a process. it's a function. in shell32.dll. Shell32.dll could, vaguely speaking, be considered as a "root file" but at the same time you cannot boot without the proper version of shell32.dll to BEGIN with. This particular issue had nothing to do with ShellExecuteEx or Shell32.dll; the very same issue would have occured had an application tried to execute an elevated application using CreateProcess() in kernel32.dll- the problem was SIMPLY that the service was not started. the Service is not a critical service, by any means. and in fact, disabling all UAC options and security of that nature would have also "fixed" the problem, since with the entire UAC infrastructure disabled, the service is not used at all.Ok. you beat me. The important thing is carlrowley1 got his CPU working.Quote from: HELPHELP on February 22, 2010, 05:30:53 PM Ok. you beat me. The important thing is carlrowley1 got his CPU working. You minimizes the first tab by placing it on the taskbar. i.e, you click the "-" icon in the top right hand CORNER. A new tab should have been created when you chose another location. You might reset your tab options and/or set to the default SETTING for tabs. Good Luck http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-vista/Tabbed-browsing-in-Internet-Explorer-8-frequently-asked-questionsQuote from: BillRichardson on February 10, 2010, 04:21:13 AM You are using IE8 and tabbed browsing. You don't know this. Many times the original poster FAILS to provide any further information. Many readers with the same problem benefit from the answers we provide.I, for one, don't even know what the problem is. But okay.Quote from: BillRichardson on February 10, 2010, 10:17:10 AM Many readers with the same problem benefit from the answers we provide.I agree with Allan. We don't know what the problem is. And, making wild assumptions, as you did in your previous post where you state the OP's problem is with IE 8, is not productive; there's just no point in proposing solutions to a problem which simply hasn't been given any clarity by the OP. |

Solve : Computer turns off half way through boot? |
Answer» My PC has began turning off during the boot process. It gets so far and shuts down. Then when you reboot it just about turns itself off before even getting started. If you wait for half an hour and turn BACK on it gets going but then shuts down again during boot. I have checked FANS and are working ok. I tried getting into "safe mode" after waiting a while but it tried to go into safe mode but then it shut down again. First guess is a bad power supply. Either that or a cheap/insufficient power supply. Quote from: EEVIAC on February 24, 2010, 12:25:58 AM Are you using a video card or onboard video? What is the make/model of the computer? ...and this, especially if there's a video card (not onboard) involved, as the video card sucks up power from the power supply. This goes double if the video card requires a four-pin molex or 6-8 pin PCI-e connection from the power supply.I'm THINKING either the CPU or Video card (if any) is overheating... She says after that waiting a half hour, it gets farther into the boot process than it does when IMMEDIATELY starting the computer back up.... My impression is that the cpu/gpu has had time to cool a little and that's why it's getting farther, after waiting.. PSU would be my next guess, however it's much easier to try another PSU than it is to add another layer of thermal grease to the cpu/gpu, so it would be better to try another PSU first, of equal or greater wattage.. |

Answer» I have two laptop COMPUTERS with Vista . Both have a default mini scroll bar that often appears beside the cursor. I cannot find how to turn the thing off! Any ideas? You will have to let us KNOW what a 'mini scroll bar' is. Not sure what you mean in any way.. can you take a screen shot so we can see what your SEEING?It appears when you "Drag" across one of the EDGES of the touchpad on some laptops. I think it's a hardware thing, since I cannot find the option to turn it off on mine.If you find this ANNOYING, one option is to disable the touchpad and use a mouse with your laptop. |

Solve : Acer Aspire 1500 Won't go passed startup!? |
Answer» My ACER Aspire 1500 laptop can start to the Acer screen but then beeps twice, continues to a screen where my options are F1 or F2 for SETUP. I don't know anything about F2. So I pick F1 and it takes me to a screen where my options are to launch the repair tools or something, or start windows normally. Both times it will FREEZE when it says Microsoft Corporation and it has that LITTLE loading bar. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. |
