Solve : Windows CMD line admin escalation?

Answer»
Hi there,

Firstly I hope this question is in the right SECTION. Sorry if its not. Its in regards to the cmd line in cmd prompt not powershell. When I type Quote
runas /user:<localmachinename>\administrator cmd
I get the password prompt and input my password and it comes up Quote
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - cmd
1326: The user name or password is INCORRECT.

I locked the screen and tried my password just to make sure and it works but the above won't for some reason. I'm doing this at home on my own machine. I don't know why this is. When I go to cmd prompt and right click on it and select run as admin it works fine.

Just to say I am putting the name as my own machine name in the above section <localmachinename>

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance Thinking your issue isnt that its wrong password but that your invoking it with incorrect syntax. Here is the help for runas and between what you have and what is in help you can see some differences. If you conform to proper syntax I think your issue will go away and it will work. The message about incorrect password I believe is because your syntax is incorrect and its the default message for that syntax problem.

This is from example in help. Help is below to show all as quoted from my Windows 7 64-bit system:
runas /noprofile /user:mymachine\administrator cmd

Quote
C:\Users\AX4>runas /?
RUNAS USAGE:

RUNAS [ [/noprofile | /profile] [/env] [/savecred | /netonly] ]
        /user:<UserName> program

RUNAS [ [/noprofile | /profile] [/env] [/savecred] ]
        /smartcard [/user:<UserName>] program

RUNAS /trustlevel:<TrustLevel> program

/noprofile specifies that the user's profile should not be loaded.
This causes the application to load more quickly, but
can cause some applications to malfunction.
/profile specifies that the user's profile should be loaded.
                     This is the default.
/env to use current environment instead of user's.
/netonly use if the credentials specified are for remote
                     access only.
/savecred to use credentials previously saved by the user.
This option is not available on Windows 7 Home or Windows 7
Starter Editions
                     and will be ignored.
/smartcard use if the credentials are to be supplied from a
                     smartcard.
/user <UserName> should be in form [email protected] or DOMAIN\USER
/showtrustlevels displays the trust levels that can be used as arguments
                     to /trustlevel.
/trustlevel <Level> should be one of levels enumerated
                     in /showtrustlevels.
program command line for EXE. See below for examples

Examples:
> runas /noprofile /user:mymachine\administrator cmd
> runas /profile /env /user:mydomain\admin "mmc %windir%\system32\dsa.msc"
> runas /env /user:[email protected] "notepad \"my file.txt\""

NOTE: Enter user's password only when prompted.
NOTE: /profile is not compatible with /netonly.
NOTE: /savecred is not compatible with /smartcard.
Thanks for getting back to me Dave.

When I run Quote
runas /noprofile /user:mymachine\administrator cmd

I still get

Quote
RUNAS ERROR: Unable to run - cmd
1326: The user name or password is incorrect.

I know the password is 100% correct, so I think your idea about the syntax but be the way forward. Just TRYING to get it to work.

I'm just using it in a batch file for running ipconfig/flushdns and netsh commands but need admin priv for the later of the two. I know it sounds a bit lazy but its just so that I can double click it without having to right click and run as admin. It also means without right clicking I can give this the batch file to run as extra privacy/security to someone else not as computer literate. Just so they can just double click it like a normal file.

Anyhoo any other ideas? I'm going to keep trying anyway. If I get it working before I hear from yourself or anyone else I'll post here the correct working syntax.

Cheers

Thanks Dave!! Quote
NOTE: Enter user's password only when prompted.
The administrator account is locked by default.

Aside from that, runas cannot be used to run software with an elevated access token anyway.Hey BC,

Its a win7 machine that was upgraded to win10 pro when I bought it.

When trying to run the malicious software removal tool it says that it has been disabled by the administrator. I right click on it to run as admin and it still won't let me dispite me being admin.

Can you explain why it can be used for elevated access. Why is the syntax there for access to admin through cli if it won't work? I'm just trying to use it to open up a cmd prompt with admin for a batch file I'm creating (as earlier post).

I was going to reset the admin password in computer management and just reset it to mine. Would this be a bad idea?? If that worked BC as you still saying that I can't use it in cmd promt syntax to make it open a cmd window with admin rights?

Thanks

Thanks Quote

Disabled by an administrator means that a group policy is in effect or some other domain restriction. It doesn't mean that it will work if you run as admin. This is a separate issue and could mean the system is infected.

Quote
Can you explain why it can be used for elevated access. Why is the syntax there for access to admin through cli if it won't work?

runas is from Windows 2000, it was not updated to handle token elevation via UAC. The best case scenario if all the passwords are correct and the accounts are set to be able to be logged in would be an error that the requested operation requires elevation.

While the older runas command prompt utility doesn't work for this, PowerShell does have this capability.

running:
Code: [Select]powershell Start-Process cmd.exe -Verb runAs
in a non-elevated command prompt will show the UAC elevation prompt and then run cmd with full permissions.

Slightly worthwhile sidebar: "Run As Administrator" implies that it is running under the "Administrator" account, which can cause some confusion (eg. but my user is an admin account!) but if your user is already an administrator, it actually means "Run with my full security token". For example if I run a program normally, it is being run by the user BC_Programming. if I run it as administrator, it's still running by the user BC_Programming. The difference is that when running normally, the process isn't given full permissions- it cannot write to the program files or Windows directories, for example. And when running as admin it doesn't strip the security token and gets all the same permissions as my full user account, which is a local admin. Thanks Guys!

I see what you mean BC. I can see the difference in profiles. (Don't know where my head was at with this one lol) However, I still can't access the MRT. I've rans scans and I'm not infected.

Is there any other way that I can get this to work? I know my profile password won't work as the real admin password. But I don't know what the administrator profile password is.

As I was saying I bought this from a site that sells ex work machines that have been refurbished.

Have you ever reset the password for the actual administrator profile through comuter management console.

OFF TOPIC - In Win10 if you create a folder on your desktop called Everything.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} It creates an icon on the desktop that has all of the menues for everything in one place. Not sure if works on other win versions but just wanted to quickly mention it in case anyone reading doesn't know about it.

Cheers!
Quote

Looks like your option at this point might be to clean build that system yourself possibly and ditch whatever group policy and other junk came along with the refurb image that they likely built this from before they sold it. Use the key that the system has which should have come with the system, if not known, you can use magical jelly bean to find it. Then install the OS clean and use the key that you see with www.magicaljellybean.com I had to assist a client with a refurb clean build where the key was unknown and magical jellybean showed it to write it down before wiping the drive.

You would need a Windows 10 installation media to install the OS clean to the drive and then use your key, and hopefully its a legit version of Windows 10 and not a cracked version. If its cracked then it wont work and you will need to buy a new key.Hey there,

Thanks guys for all the help on this one, that turned out to be me going off on one and BECOMING more than one. Cheers Dave, BC!

I think you might be right on this one Dave. I stripped off the admin pwrd then booted in and reset, restarted and accessed the actual Administrators account. Even the actual admin account, not my own user profile with admin rights, could not even open the MRT.

I've been looking at the group policy and the entried between my profile and admin profile seem different. I checked online and there was a forum on link https://www.tenforums.com/antivirus-firewalls-system-security/89924-malicious-removal-tool-mrt-blocked-system-administrator.html

It was going on about the same MRT probs and it was group policy. I think it may possibly have to be rebuild to fix the errors. Might be that it would have to be attached to whatever domain controller passed through gpupdates or something.

Is there anyway that it could be that an update to win10 pro over 7 could mess with the group profiles? Like if it was disconnected and changed from domain to workgroup then Win 10 updated over the 7 installation, and possibly a corruption has happened.

We could go on lol. Anyway thanks guys for all the input.

Oh Dave I downloaded that link to the magical jelly bean, thanks!

I can live with it just now though. This all started after trying to write a simple batch file that would open with elevated privileges haha. How to open a can of worms eh. I've got another two laptops sitting here, so if any issues I can use them, if I have to do a rebuild on this one.

Thanks again!!

Solve : Shell Icon Overlay - Batch File Solution??

Answer»

You know the little overlay in the lower left of an icon that shows you if it's a shortcut, or its update progress? Yeah, I really like that.

Dropbox has a little green one that shows you it's updated, OneDrive has one that shows you if the file is updated, or not; more specifically, it also shows you if there are any sync conflicts (which is great when many people share a drive).

Trouble is, Dropbox and OneDrive don't play nicely nicely in Windows 10. Windows can only accept so many overlays at once, and it applies them in the order that they appear in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers

Because Dropbox comes first in alpha order over OneDrive, it fills all of the slots with Dropbox overlays, and then you don't get any OneDrive overlays.

The "fix" is easy - rename all of the overlays, so the first bunch are the ones you want: there are a few Dropbox ones I don't need, so I can edit the names accordingly, putting OneDrive first, and everything is groovy.

EXCEPT.

Except, except, except.

Every time Dropbox releases an update - which is weekly - it REWRITES the g-d registry so I have to go in and delete the new overlays.

So I have two questions/options:

1) Can I somehow get Dropbox to install its RELEASE and NOT touch that part of the registry?

or

b) Can I write a batch file that I just double-click after a Dropbox update and it fixes everything for me?

ThanksBUMPI havent tested this with Windows 10, but you should be able to undo the changes via a merge. More info here: https://superuser.com/questions/1023221/adding-a-registry-key-via-batch-file

Be very careful when messing with registry. You can mess it up pretty badly with bad or missing keys etc.For reference: the maximum number of said overlays is 15. Not for any specific reason, it seems- it was decided in Win95 and they've just not sat down with a cold one to work out a better method. Realistically, overlays aren't very useful though which may be why they've not gone to that effort.

Quote

You could use the permissions settings and make the ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers key unwritable from any account. Of course this would apply to more than just dropbox, too.

Yes, but I get the suspicion your question is really "Can somebody else write a batch file that I just double-click after a Dropbox update and it fixes everything for me?"

You can use REG DELETE in said batch to delete the unwanted entries that appear, and run it after installing dropbox. Also adding on to Dave's method above you can use a reg file. You will have to change it though.

if you export the ShellIconoverlayIdentifiers key, you can change the resulting .REG file in a text editor and add a hyphen to the front of the keys you want to remove, in the square brackets:

Code: [Select][-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers\ OneDrive1]

would delete the OneDrive1 registry value. They usually come paired with = lines which aren't needed for this and can be removed. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 24, 2017, 03:19:11 PM

Oh, you cynic.

Well, yeah, I guess if something has already been written that I can crib, that would be great...

I really find the overlays useful - knowing the sync status of various files, particularly when I'm collaborating on a bunch of different stuff with a bunch of different people, is helpful.

I had read about the "First 15" rule, and what happens is, Dropbox fills the first ten slots - but those first ten slots AREN'T the overlays that Dropbox seems to use! That is to say, I have re-named 15 overlays for 1D and DB, and they ALWAYS work. Then, when Dropbox does its update, it drops ten more at the "top" of the list, and then I delete them, and I see no change in functionality.

I didn't know I could change the permissions for a single registry key. I might actually try that.

And, Dave, I will have to think about your post... Anything TITLED "SuperUser" tends to INTIMIDATE me.

Thanks! Will report back. Quote

Solve : What about Bogus Updates??

Answer»

Have any one of you have experience or knowledge about fake Windows updates?
Here is a ten-year old article that was recently updated:
http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/science-technology/786283/Microsoft-windows-10-scam-tech-support-warning
Quote

Last year Microsoft adopters were targeted by a number of shocking scams including receiving cold calls from a self-appointed Microsoft employee and malware that disguises itself as a security update, making you call a fake Microsoft hotline.
When was that? Does it still happen? Should I turn off automatice updates?
Just asking.... I woud say that using Windows Update is safe enough, or else you can use Belarc Advisor which queries Microsoft servers, but don't respond to emails or popups encountered while web BROWSING.
It's a 10 year old article Geek...

Your News priviledges are gonna be revoked. The " malware that disguises itself as a security update" Was NOT through windows update. It was like those common fake advertisements saying "100 infections Found! Clean now?" and clicking the ad takes you to a scammy fake AV site. Just in this case it was "You need ### updates. INSTALL now?" and similar prompts.Don't worry; Windows Update connects only to Microsoft's servers.

If you must manually download and run any updates, just be SURE they're from Microsoft.com, and not anywhere else. Quote from: patio on July 16, 2017, 06:34:56 PM

Your News priviledges are gonna be revoked.
Patio, Windows 10 was not out there 10 years ago. Thearticle claims there are now recent cases of the old trick taht was reported 10 years ago. Windows 10 is the target in the new fake messages.

Notice the image claims taht the warning is from Microsft. You know what combats this?

User education. You have to be incredibly ignorant (not in an insulting way) and unfamiliar with how computer Operating Systems and web browsers work to fall for such a transparent scam.

Quote
The scam starts by redirecting users to a fake Microsoft website which suggests there's a virus on their PC and prompts them to phone an emergency hotline.

These are not Fake Windows Updates. Like I said, they don't even involve Windows Update. They are arbitrary pop ups and redirects that occur when you visit shady websites. A better question to ask is why users who don't even have the experience and understanding of how the system works to be able to discern a real, legitimate message from Microsoft from a basic Window.Alert() are browsing the sort of websites that impose pop ups and redirects. It's the same problem that CAUSES people to so easily fall victim to malware via torrents; They basically know just enough to get themselves in trouble. It's like knowing how to put a manual transmission car (to callback a previous thread!) into gear but not knowing how to use the brake.

There is a very good reason that Browsers have moved their Alert dialogs from standard OS Dialog boxes to boxes contained within the website, and prefixed them with text indicating that the message is coming from the website- it's an attempt to help more informed users who understand the difference.

And it's hardly limited to tech, either. For every "Microsoft Support" scam that preys on people's ignorance of Windows and computers, there is an IRS Scam that preys on people's ignorance of how the organization works. For example, I know somebody who fell for the IRS scam but was stopped when buying gift cards. It's a somewhat understandable kind of ignorance to not understand the IRS. It's quite another to think they have jurisdiction in Canada. It is this sort of almost wilful ignorance that scams prey on.

Solve : Determine BT Problems?

Answer»

My SP4 Pro Pen sporadically does nothing when clicked. (It's set up to LAUNCH ONENOTE when clicked and take a screenshot when double-clicked).

Other BT devices (external speaker, primarily) seem to connect OK to PC.

If I reboot or re-pair, everything's fine.

But here's the question:

I have no way of knowing what the true problem is. It could be one of two:
1) Pen is not transmitting VIA BT, or
2) PC is not receiving Pen's signal

How do I determine which it is? Is there like a "BT Signal capture" diagnostic? Preferably one I could run on a different device?

Solve : W.L.M.'s SNAP does not obey Global setting?

Answer»

SNAP can be unticked in the context menu of the window title bar AND there is a global option in Settings, Multitasking, SNAP. Having turned it off globally, I find that new emails (W.L.M.) still have Snap ticked ! How to make WLM 'obey' the global setting ? - I run Win10 v1703, 32bit. Quote

SNAP can be unticked in the context menu of the window title bar

I'm unable to find any "Snap" option (ticked or unticked) on the context menu of any Window Title bar in Windows 10 1703. including Windows Live Mail. It also respects the settings I SELECT for the Snap FEATURE. The only references online appear to be other forum threads you have started with this issue. I'd guess this is being added by another third party program, which is thus interfering with default operations. What is SNAP?I deleted your duplicate thread. Please post your questions only once. THANK you.I deleted another duplicate post. Please stop posting this same question.Moderator, I apologize for offending you by MULTIPLE posting - that is NOT my intention, but it MIGHT be explained by the fact that I am not being alerted by email about replies; moreover, I could not find this post in the forum except by searching on MY posts.

As for "I'm unable to find any "Snap" option (ticked or unticked) in the context menu of any Window Title bar in Windows 10 1703" I think '3rd party program' has to be the explanation - the 'culprit' being Actual Window Manager which adds wonderful enhancements, but apparently has the BUG resulting in the complaint of my post. I KNOW it introduces unwanted transparency by some miskeyings; SNAP misbehaviour may be another unintended consequence.

As for Geek - an understanding of SNAP may be gained by looking at it in Settings>System>Multitasking where the options are more or less explained.

Solve : Page Fault in Area during startup?

Something happened with my Dell Inspiron 7559 laptop. At first, it didn't detect a HDD. So I bought a new SSD and a USB boot drive( windows 10). Now I keep getting Page Fault when STARTING up computer when I use legacy boot mode.

When I use the default boot mode, I get no bootable device found. Then, I installed windows 10 on the clean SSD with a different computer, still getting Page Fault and no bootable device found
Searching up online, I found that I should disable cache. But I am unable to do so in my bios. Can't change those system settings.

Is it my motherboard/cache thats broken?
Thanl youHave you added/installed new RAM ? ?The Dell Inspiron 7559 laptop is an expensive MACHINE. Refurbished, it can be from $600 and up. So I can understand the need to fix it and not scrap it.

Failure to install Windows 10 properly may indicate a major hardware failure BEYOUND a memory glitch. Posible chip set failure, or clock failure. ( I don't mean the clock taht gives you the time of day, I mean the subsystem taht puts the CPU and the buss at the correct frequencies.) If the failure is tracable to the motherboard, it is a job for the Dell factory.

Some motherboard issues have been REPORTED on the Dell forums.

I am now getting Memory management when I try to boot from USB to install windows

If you look at the Dell forum links I gave, you will find that model has motherboard issues. There is no simple fix once you go beyond power supply. RAM and GPU.
Some of the Intel CPU s wee bad.

Solve : Windows Hello: 'Couldn't Turn on Camera, Sign in with PIN'?

Answer»

I have had Windows Hello (facial recognition) SET up as my sign in on my SP4 running W10 since I bought it a year AGO. It has performed pretty well (except when I went a few weeks without shaving), until today.

From my Lock screen, I receive the message "Couldn't turn on camera, sign in with PIN". PIN sign in works just fine. I have tested the camera using the "Camera" app, and it works just fine.

This first started happening today, and has been continuous.

The "Surface Camera Windows Hello" driver is the most up-to-date version; Windows has the most up-to-date version, and (according to my PC) has not installed anything for over seven days.

Earlier this morning, my Windows Defender gave me an error with the Intel Management Engine interface. The Windows Troubleshooter could not fix it, so I deleted it from Device Manager and rebooted. The Camera worked then, but I still had a "(10)" error on Intel Management Engine, so I used SYSTEM Restore to go back to last Thursday. The Intel Management Engine interface is fine now. But shortly thereafter (I don't know if it was the very next time or not) is when I started having the Windows Hello problem.

Any THOUGHTS on what to try?

Thanks!

Googling seems to be for naught, a.

Solve : Constant "Not Responding" issues in Win 10?

Answer»

My Mom upgraded to Windows 10 already. Since she did, none of the taskbar BUTTONS OPEN anything. Any attempt to open Edge, Store, Files, etc, just ends up doing nothing. The busy cursor appears over taskbar, but nothing ever opens. Sometimes I can get it to let me right click the taskbar for menu, but choosing anything on the menu does nothing. Cannot maneuver around the computer to even find anything to try any fixes because nothing will open. What icon shortcuts she has on her desktop will work as far as opening, but I get constant errors if I try to do anything within them. For instance, FireFox or Chrome will open, but if you try to navigate to a page it GIVES you an error. Cannot locate windows update to see if there are any patches put out yet. Basically the computer is unusable other than the couple of games that she has icons on her desktop for (no major gaming, just local card games type stuff). TASK Manager opens a window, but never loads and stops responding. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.Sounds like the computer does not have enough memory to run Win 10,or there are too many other programs running in the background,if everything was GOOD with Win 7,just revert back.Specs about he PC please.
Which build of Widows 10 and how did you get it.
How did that PC perform with Windows 7?

Solve : Windows 10 issues?

Answer»

Okay, Hopefully you guys can figure this out cause I can't. I am running a Win 10 laptop. My issue is that no applications will install, I can't use DEVICE Manager or any properties, and trying to refresh the system with the installation media won't work because I run into an autorun.dll error.

Any suggestions?1- Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version APPLIES to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

  • Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will produce logs called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Please copy and paste the logs on https://pastebin.com and post their links back here.
2- Please download RogueKiller and save it to your desktop.
  • Quit all running programs.
  • Right-click on the program and select Run as Administrator to start and when prompted allow it to run.
  • Read and accept the EULA (End User License Agreement)
  • Click Scan to scan the system.
  • When the scan completes select "Report", a log will open. Close the program > Don't Fix anything!
  • Post the contents of the log on https://pastebin.com and post its link.
What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

Have you run full system scans with BOTH your installed av app AND with MalwareBytes? If not, please do so now.Hackoo please see PM's sent...Thanx.

patio.I use Windows Defender for my AV, but I will do a full system scan with both now.

Will update soon. MalwareBytes found two trojans, which was quarantined and removed from the PC, but I am still unable to do anything with properties, device manager or MMC.What about Defender ? ?I suggest you post in our Malware forum. Please read the intro for that forum and post the requested logs.Try my 3 steps
1. Restart
2. run anti virus
3. Reset windows in settings (Reinstall will also work) may not work if you keep files Quote from: Kai9987kai on July 16, 2017, 12:05:44 PM

Solve : Kernel Power System Failures?

Answer»

Ive been trying to diagnose this problem for a while.

System.
i7 6700k
GTX 1080
16 BG Ram
850W PSU

Suddenly will shut off, not a blue screen, just shuts off. I think this is a Blue Screen Viwer log of a crash.

Any suggestions welcome

http://mibpaste.com/2J31JyFirst thing is an very extensive MEMORY test.
The more memory yoiu have, the greater danger of a unpreditable crash. So yu need to test the memoryin small units, like one stick at a time, if yuou can.
Ive done memtest before and it seemed fine. Could i replace the ram completely? Ive got 2 other sticks sitting aroundDownload BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and PASTE it into your next replyIf your memory checks out, and temperatures check out ok, then i'd SWAP out the power supply next. I had a system failing just like this and it was a power supply that was cutting out on me. Voltages looked ok on it too, but the Rosewill Bronze 80 500 watt power supply had some sort of issue. My system is powered through a battery backup also and so I know that it wasnt a dip in my power to computer which can also cause this issue. Problem has been gone almost a year now and I was getting this problem where system would be found off and windows log complains about kernel power system failure for about a year before that and I kept running system thinking it was a fluke, but it started happening more frequently and so I had to then troubleshoot and fix it."it seems fine" sends a RED flag....
How long did you run MemTest and what results were there ? ?
In regards to Blue Screen View, it doesnt appear to be getting any reports/logs when it crashes. Its just empty still.

Ive run the Windows Memory Diagnostic test 3 times and seen the No errors found each time
At some point you can feel free to do as I asked in my previous post. I'm not sure why you were told to check the ram before we know what the nature of the error is.Windows Memory Diagnostic is not what you said you ran...DLoad and run MemTest...let it run at least an hour.
Any errors at all = bad RAM. Quote

Ive done memtest before and it seemed fine.
Will do Patio
Allan in regards to Blue Screen Viewer i would do that, but each time it crashes, no log reports are showing up to copy and pastThis is the only one that shows up in Blue Screen View, it was from another problem the other day when trying to fix the Kerenel problem. It doesnt appear to give me any reports on the Kerenel crashes

The Kernel-Power Event logs are written at startup when Windows detects it wasn't shut down properly. If the problem was a result of a Crash (BSOD), then BlueScreenView would display it, and there would be appropriate event log entries for that as well. Doesn't seem like that is the case, so I wouldn't expect that the issue is related to any software configuration. It's going to very likely be a hardware issue. I'm going to second Dave's advice here and point my finger at either the power supply, or your power situation. For all we know somebody has been using a microwave or Electric kettle or something similar on the same circuit occasionally and causing a temporary brownout which causes the system to lose power. Just ran memtest86 for 4 hours and 40 mins, 4 passes, all 100% good, no errors detected. Any suggestions? Could it be my GPU?Completely uninstall AVG and replace it with any other anti virus app. Reboot. Let's see what happens.

The FOLLOWING STEPS have also been tested to resolve the problem:

Right-click on the game icon from the desktop ( or game icon in game file location on computer) and choose 'Properties'.

Select the 'Compatibility' tab.
Check 'Run this program in compatibility mode for: 'WINDOWS XP (Service Pack 3)'. PLEASE also try this by choosing the 'Windows 7' option if Windows XP does not work.
Importantly, make sure you check the box "run this as an administrator"
Click 'Apply' and then OK.
Start a game. You should now be able to play this game.Title should probably SAY .... Backwards Compatibility for older XP games with Win 10

Solve : File sharing from Win10 Home PC?

Answer»

There are three PCs on my home network. PC1 and PC2 have recently been upgraded from XP to 10 HOME and the PC3 is still RUNNING XP.
On PC1, in addition to my C-drive, I have some logical drives. I want all users of PC1 and PC2 to have read and write access to all of PC1's logical drives but I want users of PC3 to have read-only access to only ONE of PC1's logical drives.

Despite hours of trial and error, as well as Internet searching, I cannot wok out how to do achieve that. I can get full access to all drives for all users of PC2 but then PC3 users get it too. I cannot use Homegroup (at LEAST, not only that), as XP does not use it. It looks to me as if the Home version of 10 does not allow me to specify read/write access to users on other PCs (but please correct me if I'm wrong).

I would really appreciate any halp or ADVICE anyone has to offer.I believe you need to utilize file sharing since Windows XP does not use Homegroup. This brief reference might help: File sharing between Win 10 and XP

For more references via Google , search on file sharing windows 10 to xp or a similar phrase.

Solve : Two problems with windows laptop?

Answer»

Hi there,

I can't find any information that WOULD help, so decided to write here.

1. Once I close my laptop lid my PC hibernates, but let's say if I want to open my lid and start laptop from hibernate mode sometimes (ACTUALLY quite often) it won't turn on (only black screen) and I have to force laptop with power button to shutdown, then I am able to start my laptop. Is this problem related to windows or hardware?

2. Every time after shutdown all desktop icons are mixed TOGETHER and not placed as it was before shutdown.

How to fix above problems?

Windows 10 64x Education

Regards,
ESome laptops & SSD drives do not support hibernate.

You can fix #2 with this: http://fsl.sytes.net/iconrestorer.html

Solve : Crashes and black screen?

Answer»

hey everybody I'm new here I posted my question on a bunch of different places on Reddit but no one seemed to figure out the problem. I'm sorry if this isn't the right thread for this question but I'm pretty sure the problem is with my drivers or something I have installed.

I recently have been getting crashes, hangs, and logouts from my PC. At first I was getting the "Memory has runout, close the following programs" error. So I tried to fix any issues, ran diagnostic test on memory, took out my ram. Nothing helped. So i did a full system scan with several antiviruses and malware detectors. Nothing. I did a full system defrag and also unplugged my power supply, emptied the charge, and still getting random crashes. So can someone take a look at the crash logs with me? I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

tl;dr Stupid crashes and failed processes, I can't figure out the issue can someone help.

Here are my latest crash files:

unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the CONTENT, and paste it into your next replyOk i didn't mean for you to download my crash logs I just did not know how to post them. I will post my results from the blue screen test in a little bit when I get back to my computer. Thank you very much There are no crashes found in the program even though i have had Black screen of death several times...
None of the files you posted are Crash Logs. They are saved EventLog information.

Based on what they contain, it looks like your Hard Drive is failing.

Quote

A request to write to the file "C:\Users\Cooper\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\SettingSync\metastore\meta.jfm" at offset 0 (0x0000000000000000) for 8192 (0x00002000) bytes succeeded, but took an abnormally long time (17 seconds) to be serviced by the OS. This problem is likely due to faulty hardware.

The lack of BSOD logs visible by BlueScreenViewer is due to these hard drive issues as well, as the VOLUME Manager has logged numerous errors where it fails to initialized a Crash Dump, which would seem likely to be due to the same cause. There are also numerous errors regarding what appears to be failure to load the Display Driver, which could be the same reason.

I suspect that is not the reason why the logs are peppered with failures to connect to a KMS server to perform Volume License Key Activation, though. I can guess why that is showing up.I looked online about the activation error and it said it was mainly from unactivated Windows but that doesn't make any sense because I BOUGHT Windows 8.1 last year and got the free upgrade when I could and I checked my system settings too and it says it's activated. I don't know what else it could behere is a text file for those worried about downloading. This is only one test

Solve : How can I choose when Windows 10 downloads updates??

Answer»

I have Hughesnet with limited usage (cheapest plan) and I've gotten into trouble with Windows 10 Updates downloading during peak usage hours when I'd rather be able to have the option of downloading updates manually. How can I change Windows 10 settings to download ONLY when I choose the TIME. Hughesnet allows "free" time between 2:00AM and 7:00AM, however, I do not want to schedule for that time as I do not leave my computer running all night long. I can, however, get up before 7:00AM to manually download updates if they are available. Is there a way of doing this? Thank you.See here
http://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/windows/how-stop-windows-10-downloading-updates-3626701/Sorry to take so long getting back to you. Windows 10 downloaded another huge update and Hughesnet just wouldn't allow me to get to the hyperlink you provided. This morning I was able to get it to connect and, UNFORTUNATELY, I have an ethernet CONNECTION at my present LOCATION which excludes my computer from setting it for 'metered' according to the instructions. I usually try and get all my big updates at my other location, however, the folks who added more MEMORY to my laptop didn't bother letting it update Windows or Kaspersky security. Thank you for your suggestion anyway.

Solve : Wild cursor?

Answer»

When I boot my HP laptop with windows 10, disc shapes appear on the RH side of the screen which flash about vertically, along with vertical lines. While this is happening, the cursor flashes about RENDERING it inoperable. It usually stops after several minutes and peace is restored, can anybody explain the reason for this?Connect this laptop to HDMI to a TV or if its got VGA port to a computer display and see if its doing this to that display as well. It MIGHT just be a display issue which can be corrected with display REPLACEMENT. If this computer is new enough to have a warranty then I would use the warranty to cover the repair ETC. If too old for a warranty then its either live with it the way that it is or pay someone to replace the display or replace the display yourself. However if you see this problem on another display that this laptop is connected to then its a GPU issue or something else going on and not the laptop displays fault for this then.

Solve : I just got a major update. What was it??

I just got a major update on Windows 10. It looks like some of my programs are gone. Does that sound right? I can not FIND Firefox. Did they remove it? or am I so forgetful I can't remember where I put it?
The build number is not the same. So, how do I make a rescue DVD in case I ever need to wipe my drive clean?
Have you checked your update history?I heard about this with 10 a little ways back, maybe its due to this: https://www.howtogeek.com/243581/windows-10-may-delete-your-programs-without-asking/

Quote

Microsoft hasn’t directly commented on this. In fact, Microsoft specifically declined to comment when asked about this by VentureBeat. We also haven’t seen them issue a statement to any other media outlet or a blog post on the subject. That’s why we can only piece this TOGETHER from what people are reporting on social media and forums. However, the Microsoft Services Agreement that applies to Windows does explicitly states that Microsoft may remove access to software or hardware.

I have a brand new Dell Intel Core i3 2.1ghz laptop that came with Windows 10 and i bought it cheap ( $279.99 ) as an upgrade replacement to my ASUS Intel Celeron 1000M 1.8Ghz Dual-Core Windows 7 laptop that I have had for 4 years now, but each time I mess with Windows 10, I find myself running back to the comfort and no nonsense of Windows 7, so the new laptop remains new in storage for now, however I am thinking I should boot it every once in a while and keep it up to date as for someday I might be forced to have to use Windows 10 for something that requires Windows 8 or newer.

I use the run hour information in the hard drives data with crystaldiskinfo to use an an idea of how many run hours I have on laptops and in 4 years the laptop just finally reached 1083 hours of use, but like 543 boots according to hard drive. My desktop systems I pack on the runtime with and have drives heading for 50,000 hours of use. I took advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade on a spare drive and I suppose I should pop that into my desktop and bring that up to date too.

As Salmon said though the update history should SHOW what was last run with a KB and number you then can look up what the change or changes were from this number. In here it should also show a pass or fail for updates. At least on my Windows 7 systems it shows whether a update was successful etc. Thinking 10 should be the same.I assure you, the Windows update did not "remove" Firefox.Windows 10 only removes programs that have known issues which tends to be programs that install drivers (CPU-Z, HWMonitor, that sort of thing) as well as occasionally, AV Software.

Well, technically, they aren't actually removed. They just aren't brought forward, because they are only removed during major version upgrades. Firefox isn't ONE of the programs though. It probably just reset your default browser.

OK. What are they?

It's the alleged anniversary update that happened...

Thanks for the help. Windows Tin is working fine. The California heat is getting to me. The AC does not work and it is 88 here in my computer nook.

I am not crhying... taht is sweat!

edit: it says version 1703(OS Build 14083.413)
.... am am not even going o ask!
The Windows installer will absolutely uninstall certain programs. I'm addicted to Spider Solitaire game from Windows 7. MS removed those games starting in Win 8 which meant I needed to install them to use them in Win 8 and Win 10. MS doesn't want you to use the olde versions of their games, they want you to use the new versions (which I don't like). Anyway, the installer will remove Spider Solitaire every update and I just re-install it. I've never had FireFox removed. Most of the aftermarket installers which provide those Windows 7 games install it to the same location that they were found in Windows 7- "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games" I expect that The upgrade checks for this folder and will remove it because it is presumed that it is a leftover from Windows 7; and since the Windows 7 programs don't run on Windows 10 there would have been no reason to keep them. Basically, it isn't uninstalling the program, it's removing what it thinks are components of the previous version of Windows.

The Winaero Installer was the only installer that seemed to actually install working versions for me. But it doesn't even give you an option of where to put the files- forces them to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games" You can move the folder to another location or rename it (and change shortcuts) and upgrades should leave them alone.Sounds like he needs an air-conditioner more than anything else...Thanks to all lfor hyour help and observations.
I got help from Microsft support fora very important issue. My Windows 10 was not activated. To make a long story short, I had a bobo with my motherboard. And I donm't want to talk aboaut it.

Anyway, MS online support fixed the activation issue whne I explained how I got Windows 10 from the Windows 7 upgrade program. I could not use the image from my old install, because I changed motherboard. So I had done a a new intall of 1607. But I could not find any product key. The never was one. So the Tech on Microsft support was kind enoughj to type in a valid code over remote assitant. Works great now.

I have now made a new full backup of this new motherboard using Macrium Reflect.
https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

But I will have to clean up a few programs that are not exacltyright. But that is not a problem. I use an old version of Keytext that will rum on WIndows 10, but with some kind of specail things that reqjuires a re-install. Anyhow, it works now.

Maybe, someday, I will become an expert on WIndows 10. If that ever happens, I wnt to change my user name from Geek-9pm to Geek10.

==================================================There appears to be a problem with your ATI display adapter or driver. The fact the the problem persists even after an update to Windows 10 would point to the adapter itself.

Look in Device Manager. Is there a yellow or red symbol next to the Display Adapter? If so, try a different driver (from the ATI website). If there is no yellow or red symbol, I suggest you try a different display adapter (video card).there is no sign in device manager i will try a new gpu but why is that my boot up screen is small, its stretched in both side even the windows loading is stretched. is this occurs because of my graphics card Yes, it is likely being caused by the bad card. Please post BACK after you try a new one.

Solve : Windows 10: Incorrect Network Icon Fix?

Answer»

Not actually a question but a solution I found to a problem I was experiencing, so I thought I'd share the solution I found.

I was finding that on my laptop SYSTEM the network notification icon would often show the "Not connected" Ethernet Icon, even when the system was properly connected. This made it difficult for me to tell if I was actually connected or not. Some of the other SUGGESTIONS I found involved completely disabling/uninstalling all network devices, disabling other network devices (eg. the Ethernet port) and so on. I didn't want to take those steps- Why should I disable my ethernet adapter? Windows should be able to HANDLE this itself!

Anyway, After some messing about I was able to fix it by restarting the "Network Location Awareness" SERVICE.

Solve : Windows starts with black screen?

Answer»

How's it GOING! A couple nights ago windows 10 was installing updates I walked away expecting it too shut down properly only to come back to the same screen "preparing updates, pleas don't turn off your computer" I sat their a little longer, before doing a hard reset because obviously nothing was getting done.

Fast forward a couple of days I boot my computer and windows boots into a black screen, I then hard reset again and windows boots up fine and gives me the login screen. Now everytime I do a regular shutdown and then boot back into windows I get a black screen , but when I hard reset it boots up fine.

So I decided to reset windows, as I'm sitting through the windows reset it says "there was a problem resetting your pc" so now I'm confused as to what to do! I have the windows OEM disk can I do a clean reinstall with that? Obviously my windows INSTALL must be corrupted right?

EDIT: The problem seems to be very "flaky" now I booted up the computer and all of a sudden it went to a blackscreen and my monitor shut off. Then I rebooted it again several times in a row and the windows login screen came up several times in a row. I'm so confused! What make/model computer or computer specs if custom BUILD? And have you updated the display driver for video card?
Hello! It isn't a prebuilt I built it myself

MOBO: Msi h81m-p33
CPU: i5-4460
GPU: Nvidia gtx 1060
1 250 GB ssd drive

The video driver is the latest driver

EDIT: is it possible that theirs a problem with my sleep settings in my MOBO? everytime I wake my PC from sleep I have to press the power button I have a very similar problem. But my computer goes to a black screen no matter what I try. I've powered it off several times. This is very concerning. Ok, So I reinstalled windows 10 i'm trying to rule out that their are any OS corruption issues..
Now when I start my computer I've never noticed this before but it's kind of strange, the bios screen flashes
twice and then the windows loading icon is on the bios screen before it boots into windows which I find quite odd.Replace CMOS battery.
Well I don't see how that's going to fix my issue, I just replaced it with a spare I had. And the issue still persists, should I worry about it? It's just weird that something like that would change just after REINSTALLING windows.

Solve : KMSpico Word hangs itself and hangs the computer?

Answer»

Hello: Please help! I use a VAIO notebook, running Windows 10. In the past few days the computer has had a mind of its own. It slows down, gives that spinning wheel of death (the blue circle) when using Word, and also seems to do things that I didn't ask it to do, like close a program, or choose a tab in a program.
My biggest problem now is that when I try to work on a Word document, either Word won't open at all, giving me an error message, or once I get in there, as soon as I try to scroll down on a page, the blue wheel comes up. Then Word hangs, then the computer hangs.

Is this a virus? What should I do?

WAIT, I just did a Windows defender SCAN. It shows: C/Program files/KMSpico/cert/install all.cmd and two other KMspico files. Could this be the problem. Can Windows Defender deal with this or should I do something else?

Thanks in advance. No, it is not a virus. Look here:

Thank you Geek. I let windows defender eliminate from my system and now it's working ok. Should I just assume everything is all right?
You asked for history of this computer. I bought this computer in 2014. Windows 8 was in it then, and I bought the Word program to be installed then also, from the computer store. It was a registered version. All my office things are Windows 2013.
In the past few months I do get a pop-up notice from "MICROSOFT Activation Wizard" saying that the Microsoft Word Professional 2013 is not activated. I have no idea why I am getting this. I didn't ask for an update or for a professional version or whatever. I have just been using the same thing that I purchased and had installed three years ago.
I notice the Windows defender has once again detected KMSpico. I don't know where this is coming from. I am not installing this myself.
My computer also just doesn't seem to be acting like itself.
http://www.removemalwarevirus.com/remove-kmspico-trojan-virus-from-infected-computerDid you know thats an illegal Win verification tool ? ?No I didn't know that, and I don't know where it was coming from. I didn't ask for it anywhere. For now, it seems to be gone after the last time Windows Defender threw it out.
Why am I receiving the red notices about registering my Office? I haven't installed a new Office. Does this mean the old one expired?

Thanks in advance.

Solve : Can't boot Windows+keyboard inactive during pc boot?

Answer»

Basically my pc has been in a boot loop for the past few days and it keeps trying to REPAIR Windows and failing and have tried almost everything to fix it. The only thing I have not tried is changing the start up settings this is because in order to do this my pic needs to restart to load the start up menu. However the start up menu loads at a stage before my computer supplies power to my keyboard. I have tried all my USB ports and none will give my key board power which means I can't use the number keys to select SAFE MODE or something.
But this isn't where the CURRENT problem LIES at the moment. I gave up on the start up menu and tried some more things with the cmd I accidentally stopped it from trying to auto repair everyone it boots and I can no longer get to these settings. It just says recovery your pc couldn't start properly, error code 0x0000001 press esc for recovery, enter to try again and f8 for start up settings. This too is at a stage where my keyboard is in active.

If anyone has any idea how to use my keyboard during this stage or how to undo switching off auto repair, It would be great.
If anyone also has any idea what I should do to fix Windows after I fix this itwould also be useful.Does the PC have PS2 ports ? ?

If so get a PS 2 keyboard and mouse...If there is no PS/2 port then do this:
One USB device only.
Just don't have any other things.
Use only the keyboard on USB.

Solve : What the heck is Steps Recording & what do I do with it??

Answer»

I've been having trouble with OneDrive. I am in contact with support at OneDrive and we've done numerous things, the important one was to stop sending any info to OneDrive from my computer. I either have to delete some stuff, or add (pay for) more storage. I have no need for OneDrive as I backup my computer on an external hard drive (hey, something I can do). Now they've given me a chore to do that requires me to run Steps Recorder. Fine, I figured out how to get it started, but the only thing that shows up on my screen is a little box (can't be enlarged) and it says it's recording, but I don't see a thing. It asked me where to save it and I put to save it to my Desktop Documents. So I stopped it after a few minutes, looked on Desktop Documents, not there. OneDrive also sent me the instructions from Microsoft on how to use Steps Recorder and I read it, however, no explanation as to how to really work the thing. Can any of you tell me what to do?

Most of you know I'm computer stupid...I try...I really do...but I JUST DON'T GET IT! I almost literally need someone sitting beside me to show me, and then I can do it from then on out, or step by step, exactly what I see on the screen NEEDS to be told to me. The big thing is, a lot of times what my computer is supposed to say, isn't what it really says. Oh, there ya go, that's why I can't understand it, miscommunication!

Love all you guys!

Debby
You start Recording, do stuff, then stop recording. It then shows you the steps it RECORDED and you can use Save to save the recorded data as a zip file.Apparently, Microsoft wanted to see the Steps Recording file so that they could know what steps you were taking on your computer in your attempt to disable or remove OneDrive. I suggest making another attempt to remove it yourself. This should help: https://support.office.com/en-US/article/Turn-off-or-uninstall-OneDrive-f32a17ce-3336-40fe-9c38-6efb09f944b0

Thanks soybean, but when I did what it says to do, hit Windows key + R, type gpedit.msc to open Local GROUP Policy Editor, my computer comes up with "gpedit.msc cannot be found". See, didn't I tell you my computer never says what it's supposed to say? I do think somewhere in doing all this, I did uninstall OneDrive but had to re-install because it had some things on it I needed (and can't figure out how to get them off of OneDrive) (I checked the "fetch" to fetch it from OneDrive to my computer, but that does ABSOLUTELY nothing). And it seems everything just confuses me more because my computer never says what it's supposed to.

You should just follow that first set of steps to uninstall OneDrive. There wouldn't be much reason to disable it if it is uninstalled.

That said, The article is poorly written. Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) is only available in the Pro Edition of Windows, not the Home. The article doesn't even mention that. Mind you it seems the author is confused as well; one of the first things described is how to uninstall Onedrive from Windows 10. Later, in the "Hide OneDrive in Windows 10" section, it claims that "OneDrive is built in to Windows 10, so it can't be uninstalled. " What? They just described how to do it!

As for getting files off of OneDrive, You can copy files from OneDrive just like normal, If you have it installed. It should appear in the left pane of the File Explorer, and you can access it that way and copy paste as one would for any normal file to your local documents folder. No, that didn't work BC_Programmer, to copy files. On the OneDrive list they give me Files, where pictures, documents, etc., are on. Then further down they give me Photos. I want that whole Photos file. It is not under the regular file. It is mainly Webshots pictures I had downloaded to my Webshots desktop, however, I am from Staunton, Virginia (I don't live there anymore, all my family is there, though), and I took some pictures, cannot find them on my computer so I have no idea how they got on OneDrive, but I'd like to have them. And I'm with you, I have Windows 10, yes OneDrive was installed, and yes, they do tell you that you cannot uninstall it, then tell you how to do it. Isn't that an oxy-moron?
Just copy/move all your stuff from One Drive to your PC...the pics are there and you can sort thru them at your convienence...I can copy paste any and all files from OneDrive:

I can select all of them and copy/paste them wherever I want.

Okay, let me try that - I went to OneDrive on the WEB to do it. See, I told y'all I was computer stupid!
You are not stupid...it's just something you haven't learned to do yet...Okay you guys, I clicked on OneDrive and copied all the files to my computer (I think). I got my OneDrive storage down under the limit, but when I checked it today, more had been added to it. I unchecked the box under SETTINGS to not start OneDrive automatically when I sign in to Windows. So, how is my "stuff" still getting on OneDrive? I'm trying to learn about this thing but I just don't get it. I have looked everywhere I can think of to turn OneDrive off in case I'm missing something and I don't see anywhere else. Even worse, getting rid of and understanding this OneDrive seems to be an obsession all of a sudden.

Also, back to the original thing I wrote about, this Step Recorder thing, am I not supposed to have a full screen when it starts? I read how to use it on Microsoft's Support and it looks to me it can show it in that little box I get, or full screen. I can't get full screen on mine. Do I just let it record and then see if I can open it? I'm traveling into unknown territory...I had never heard of Step Recorder nor Snip It tools, so all this stuff is just unreal!!!
If you copy stuff from OneDrive the files are still there...if you Move the files to the PC it frees up space...Turn Off Steps Recorder...

Solve : Shopping for a 10-inch 2 in 1?

I am looking for a 10-inch 2 in 1 as an extra to my 15-inch Intel Core i5-5200U laptop. I would like Windows 10 and will use it MAINLY for some financial programs, surfing, watching videos etc. I need to multitask and want speed - however - I would like to get something under $500, preferably under $400. Refurbished is fine, I am just not sure whether I should simply buy one one with an ATOM processor - if so which KIND - or try and find something better for the money I want to SPEND. I seems that Celerons and Pentiums can be had for under $500.

Any suggestions? I like speed, efficiency, and multi-tasking but don't play games or need special graphics etc...What exactly is a 10 inch 2 in one ? ?A small notebook where the screen part can be detached and used as a tablet, I think.

.... File History is the primary backup tool in Windows 8 and 10. It offers not just full backups, but also a way to restore previous versions of FILES. Microsoft also includes the old Windows 7 Backup and Restore in both Windows 8 and 10 and it works the same way it always has, ALLOWING you to perform selective or even full image-based backups. And while it’s not really a true backup solution, the inclusion of OneDrive does let you build a little redundancy into your file storage.

Microsoft’s plans for WSL remain mainly provisional and experimental, but the company is improving and expanding WSL at the pace of a first-class feature. If this is any hint, Microsoft’s goal is nothing short of making it a credible alternative to other Linux distributions.

IMPORTANT note
This is the first release of Bash on Windows and it is branded "beta" deliberately - it's not yet complete! You should expect many things to work and for some things to fail! We greatly appreciate you using Bash on Windows and helping us identify the issues we need to fix in order to deliver a great experience.

Prerequisites
Your PC must be running (at a minimum) a 64-bit version of Windows 10 Anniversary Update. Creators Update is recommended.

To find your PC's CPU architecture and Windows version/build number, open Settings>System>About. Look for the OS Build and System Type fields.

Is this important to you?
"Will you?" - Have been SINCE April 2016 on my laptop (Insider Builds), and since August 2016 on my mainstream machine (it came with Anniversary Update).

Since the Creators Update you have interops (interoperability) so you can do this in bash

Code: [Select]/mnt/c/Windows/System32/cmd.exe /c dir
You can make the /mnt/c/Windows/System32/cmd.exe part into something shorter if you wish (having .bashrc on Windows! W00T!)

and in Windows command prompt you can do this

Code: [Select]bash -c "ls -l"
These are just simple examples, of course. In each shell you can run the other shell's scripts and binaries... What's not to like?

I do find a lot of Linux command line stuff more intuitive and more rewarding to master, and (I feel like I am admitting something dirty here) I have never much liked Powershell. Yes, I know there has always been Cygwin, but I don't like that much either. I have a Linux box running Debian 8 Jessie and using WSL to provide an ssh terminal is very handy, also to my NAS running ARM Linux. I use Nano for my editor. All is good.

In fact you can just use cmd.exe in bash, because the bash $PATH variable includes the Windows %path%
I don't have it enabled on most of my SYSTEMS (maybe a few where I fiddled with it) and probably won't use it. Though it is good to know it is there. Could be useful for things like SSH like Salmon mentioned.

I definitely prefer Bash over powershell by a wide margin but generally prefer to do things the "Windows way" on windows and the "Linux Way" on Linux, and cmd tends to be enough on Windows, at least for me. Though there have been times I wanted a easily available Linux command or program and had to try to build a Windows version from source which was a pain which is made simple via this approach.

I haven't had any VM's installed for a long time; otherwise, perhaps this would RAISE no question in my mind. The fact that you can't install W7 in a dual-boot configuration but can install it as a VM on the same computer seems odd. Would like to hear some comments on this.Likewise...never seen that message...VM or not.Yes I would like some comments on why I couldn't install as a dual boot systemI thought that if you want to install dual Windows OSs you GENERALLY have to install the older version first, could that be a reason why the W7 installer gives up?

So I posted earlier about this icon that is stuck in the bottom right hand corner of my screen, and was directed here after finding that there is a new folder under my Users containing these two files. HRUPPROG.EXIT and HRUPPROG
I've attached a FILE showing the icon taken from my phone as it does not show up in any kind of screenshot or display capture. I've followed all the steps in the top post downloading and running all these programs and nothing has changed. I don't know whether this folder and the icon have anything to do with each other, this is just all I could surmise from my couple of hour trying to FIX this. Solve : Windows 10 keeps freezing during shutdowns, startups and update installations?

Answer»

Hello!

A family member of mine have a PC that ran Windows 10 fine for about 1 year. Last week a reboot was done through Avast and it got stuck at preparing Windows and was stuck for 12 hours before I did a hard reset.
After that hard reset I only got a black screen and I tried every repair option as well as a repair install through Windows 10 1607 installation USB drive with no luck. So I did a clean install of Windows 10 1607 and everything worked fine.
The next day it did a reboot and got stuck at 30% for 15 hours before it got shut down. After that it wasn't started until yesterday and another clean install of Windows 10 1703 which failed with the black screen.
I then installed Windows 10 1607 and tried to upgrade to 1703 and that gave the same result. So I did another clean install of Windows 10 1607 and it worked fine for 10 minutes. Then it got stuck at the shutdown screen.
After this multiple reinstalls and repair installs of Windows 10 1607 have been made and it keeps freezing at screens like preparing windows, installing updates (x %), shutdown, restarting and the login screen but never inside Windows. During these safe mode works but not safe mode with networking.
I've also tried removing and replacing RAM as well as trying a spare RAM stick with no luck. The last time it got stuck at preparing Windows after a clean install of Windows 10 1607 and installing updates. Nothing else has been installed. The SSD used is a Kingston SSDNow uv400 120GB that was bought yesterday.
It has been checked with Kingstons software, Crystal Disk Mark and chkdsk and it's 100% healthy. I tried installing Windows 10 1607 from the same USB on the SSD while connected to a newer PC I know is working and that worked fine so I think it's either driver or hardware related.
I also ran Memtest86 v4.3.7 for over 1 hour with no errors. During the last Windows 10 installation only the minimal hardware was connected such as mobo, CPU, 1 stick RAM, SSD, GPU and PSU. The USB was inserted in a slot on the mobo itself and not the front panel.

It's an old PC with a few cheap upgrades:
Mobo: Packard Bell ixtreme m5140
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1035T
RAM: 3 x 2GB
GPU: Asus GTX 750Ti
PSU: EVGA 600B
SSD: Kingston SSDNow UV400 120GB
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB

The GPU and PSU was bought about 2 months ago and the SSD as well as the HDD was bought yesterday. So the problems started on the old HDD and were still there on the new SSD.

At this point I'm out of ideas. What should I do now?

Thanks in advance!Le's make this simple
The SSD is not the problem.
But to make things easy, do the install without the SSD. change that later..
Check the BIOS and see when it was created.
You said 'old HDD'. Sso the Segregate Barracuda 1TB is a new drive?

Install Windows 10 again and create a small partition. About 24 Gigabyte is enough to install windows. Later you can use more of the drive later. But for now, a small partition is easy and quick and side steps a possible hard drive issue.

And it should take hours to install Windows 10.

Tip: If the computer seems to be stuck, TRY the cap lock o r Num lock keys. If you get them to change, the system is working. But it the keyboard lights stop responding, the thing is stuck.

It's an old PC with a few cheap upgrades:
Mobo: Packard Bell ixtreme m5140
How old? Did it come with Windows 10?
What kind and size of HDD did it once have?

Hello!

Thanks for the quick reply. It was built by Packard Bell in 2010 so it's 7 years old. It came with a 1.5TB WD drive and the Seagate one was bought at the same time as the SSD because the WD one got really slow and after doing the scans on it I found out that it isn't healthy anymore. The PC came with Windows 7 and after swapping parts with one of my old PCs it looks like it's a problem with the drivers.

I'll try what you said but if it doesn't work I'll probably go back to Windows 7 and see if that works. I'd like to keep trying to find the problem but at this point he just WANT a working PC and therefore we've decided to test Windows 7 again if what you said doesn't work. I'll get back here with the results later.

Thanks again!OK, that helps.
I can not find that model number.
This is a Desktop, - Right?
Can you check again and provide the model number of the computer, nut just the m0therboard.
It is possible you have an issue with the chip set. Things do wear out. The chipset MAY have a defect or flaw that was late to shew up.
The resewn for making a small partition is to side step three possible issues.
1. Part of the HDD may have been damage, a small partition MIGHT avoid the damaged area.
2. Install to a large partition takes much longer and raises the temperature of the inside of the PC. Hear might be an issue.
3. It is a good practice to dived a large drive into partitions on a personal computer.

If the install fails even on a small partition, then you may have to buy or borrow a PCI card with a SATA controller. But don't buy anything till that becomes the last resort.
The full name of the desktop is Packard Bell iXtreme A8583 NCD
I tried installing Windows 10 on that SSD in another PC that I know works with Windows 10 and it worked fine there. I then connected it to the PC with issues and planned to reinstall on it again but failed to press F12 in time to change boot option. When it booted up it worked a while to make that installation be usable in that PC instead and it did, however, after doing a restart it once again got stuck at the login screen.
I also tried what you mentioned on the HDD with a small portion and the same thing happened after the first restart. Also, I pressed caps- and numlock and the lights didn't change so it's completely frozen.
I'll try Windows 7 next to see what happens.

Thanks again!That does help.
This link claims to have drivers needed for that machine to run on Windows 1-0.
http://www.driverscape.com/manufacturers/packard+bell/laptops-desktops/ixtreme-x8500-ncd/77015
I've installed Windows 7 now and everything works fine I'll probably just run Windows 7 until I can upgrade the mobo, CPU and RAM to a setup that has drivers for Windows 10.

Thanks for the help!

Solve : Advice on sending a faulty PC abroad for repair / replacement wanted?

Answer»

As I have not found a business or anyone willing to replace the emmc drive in my 2-in--1 Tablet PC I am very probably going to have to send it from the UK to USA for REPLACEMENT / repair, under warranty. I am very much in need of advice regarding this unfamiliar and unwelcome action.

For example, if possible should I format the C drive? And before doing this should I backup all or some of it to an external drive first, or is it likely this will copy the faults in the drive?

Secondly, with regard to the imminent Creators update should I try to install this before sending the machine back, or should I try to send it back before the (compulsory) update arrives?

I may well be able to carry out these procedures because I understand (although the machine is not in my hands at present) it is still USABLE for many activities, despite the faulty drive (emmc, very difficult / costly to replace), which is however causing more than a dozen malfunctions, like being unable to download / update Store apps, or set a PIN code for signing in, or use links in Mail, etc.

I have seen that there are some items on emmc's in this webpage I have not encountered elsewhere which I will read with interest.
Please supply the brand name and MODEL of the PC.
Also, how long have you had it?

Personally i would do a complete image of the HDD as a backup...there are many image apps out there...my recommendations would be Acronis True Image...Paid...or for Free choices either Macrium Reflect...or Easus ToDo.

This way you have all your data ...and it can be restored after you get the PC back...
An image will not create HARDWARE faults...which it seems you have so that's no concern.

However you don't want an image that may be infected so run all your protection scans on it prior to creating the image...

Good Luck...and keep us posted.Thaanks for your replies.
I have decided not to try sending my Cube iWork Ultimate back, partly because i am having DOUBTS about it being a hardware problem. So what do you think it is ? ?

I installed win 10 and I don't like it ,I removed it and now its a pain in the arse to try to boot my win 7 back in, Microsoft has embedded itself in a partition on my hard drive and I WANT to COMPLETELY take it out but it will not let me . Any ideas ? I want to completely wipe out the hard drive and start new with win 7.
This would all depend on how the install was done...more details...first I TRIED to boot from start up press any key nothing .then I went into my computer and booted from there when windows comes to the partition area I can not format the partition with win 10 in it , it says that its write protectedNone of that has anything close to my question above...
Your describing symptoms...i asked how the install was done...Having win 7 ultimate I decided to try win 10.. downloaded win 10 pro decided it was not for me went back to win 7 but everything was missing files, decided to go and redo windows 7, I've seen that win 10 made a cd rom write protected partition .it will not let me take it out .I need to know how to remove this write protected part that win 10 embedded in my hard drive You can delete Delete all partitions when booting from the Win7 disc. Win10 doesn't CREATE any sort of read-only CD-ROM partition.when I try to boot from win 7 disk when pressing any key there is no booting ,when I go to my computer and boot from win 7 I try to erase all but it will not let me. all I want to do is get rid of everything and make a fresh install of win 7 .

win 7 ultimate bought from best buy` The last thing I want to do is buy another hd, why does this have a cd rom reading? Quote

why does this have a cd rom reading?

What does this mean ? / Quote from: redbird on April 27, 2017, 04:49:08 PM
why does this have a cd rom reading?

Your Hard Drive has only one partition, which is the boot partition for WIndows 7 so you cannot delete it with disk management or while booted into Windows.

The "CD ROM" you see is your optical drive that you have the Windows 7 DVD inserted in.

"GSP1RMCULXFRER-EN-DVD" is the Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Installation Disc. It should be bootable. You need to boot to the disc. Is your CMOS/BIOS setup configured with the DVD Drive higher in the boot order than your Hard Disk?Bc programmer your the best ! I don't know how it was change but that did it

Solve : Problem with starting my laptop on windows 10?

Answer»

I have a Sony Vaio laptop. I bought it and it came with window 8. with a hard disk of 640 Gb. I had not even 25% of the hard disk occupied and started to give blue screens with error messages. It sent me a MESSAGE to change to window 8.1. I did not do it. Migrate to window 10 and keep working. Soon I started to give blue screens with error messages. Remove the hard DRIVE from the laptop and I made a DIAGNOSIS with a diagnostic program and it gives me a message of 30% damage.. I currently can not start the laptop. My question is Can you do a defragmentation in D.O.S systems to ISOLATE the damaged sector? For initial the laptopHi,

If you have access to the data on the hard drive, please backup your important data to a DIFFERENT hard drive as soon as possible, before doing any diagnostic or trying to fix further. May I know which utility did you use to diagnose?I was endorsing the data and managed to back up some of the data.
Diagnose it with two programs: the DISKINFO and the CENTINEL.
The question. I can defragment the hard drive in D.O.S to isolate the damaged sector and then boot the laptop and then work

Solve : My laptop shut down when on battery . From Windows 10?

Answer»

Hello all,

I have a strange issue on my laptop (DELL XPS L702x).
I've been working for year on this computer with Windows 7 without any concern at all.
And from the day I upgraded my computer on Windows 10, my computer started to have an issue when I'm on Battery (the power not plugged in ;-)). When I remove the power supply , after a moment (this can be from 5 min to more than 1 hour), the computer suddenly stops. When I say stops it is an hardware shut down (not a windows closing), like if you hold the power button long.

I did a some search on the web but did not find exactly the same thing as I have.
I'm 100% sure this problem is a software issue coming from Windows 10. Why? Firstly I never had any behavior like this on Windows 7. And even more I still have Windows 7 on another partition and it is working well. Secondly my battery is recent and every time well charged when the issue occurs. And finally, from my searches on internet, I could more or less find where this can comes from. I did remove the file "Cmbatt.sys" from system32/driver and from that time no more this problem. But unfortunately I do not have the battery management in windows (battery LEVEL icon, battery low warnings).

Even if this partially solved my concerns I would like to correctly solve it and at least understanding what's really that issue.
Does any one of you have an idea where is this coming from and any vision of stable solution?

Thanks, What does the Windows Event logs show?

My THOUGHTS are that your battery might not be measured correctly and so it might say you have 75% battery left and it might really be 12% etc, and then it drops out because your battery is completely spent.

To test to see if its the battery completely spent. Keep it disconnected from power supply and see if you can get it to run for any lengthy length of time after this shut down situation. My thoughts are that the battery being spent the laptop will either not boot at all off the battery or if it does it will shutdown pretty quickly again. If it stays running for another 10 minutes or longer after this happens then its something else going on.

Being that its a laptop that is aged, you might be looking at a battery replacement as the fix to it dropping like a stone on you, however the wrongful reporting of battery life could be another issue.

If your doing anything important on this, I would keep it plugged into wall power. If you want to just do away with this problem vs going through the process of letting it crash hard again and trying to reboot after this to see if the battery holds the computer up for a length of time to verify the battery charge amount, you could pick up a battery for this laptop not to expensively.

I have 2 older laptops that tell me I have 100% charge and when I use them with power disconnected, they only last about 5 minutes tops and then they shutdown. One of them the battery dives so fast that Windows power management isnt able to react fast enough to safe shutdown and so I have seen it sense that the battery is spent and then 5 seconds later its blacked out shut off because the battery is spent, so there wasnt enough juice for a graceful shutdown. These laptops run Windows 7 and not Windows 10. They are about 7 years old. Looking online I see comments on this model back to 2011 so your battery may need to be replaced.Thank you Dave!

I thnink the Battery is still fine (less than 1 year old). And on W7 it usually last more than 90mins...
Alos when it shut down, I have to wait for 5 sec and then I can restart it and it is working well on the battery for a long. And the value display looks for me normal (based on the FACT I'm used to work with this computer... nothing strange on this point).

I did not check the event log. I'll try to make it happen again and will check it!

I've read on the web this driver is the one providing the information about power status to others applications. (Like the graphic card)... I'm pretty sure the issue is coming from windows power management or other peripherals that adapt their behavior depending on the power is plug or not. So far I have set all the parameters I could find as identical with PLUS or not plug status. How can I know which processus is accessing to this Cmbatt.sys driver? Does anyone knows if there is other hidden power management parameters in( REGISTERS for exemple)?

Thank,

Hi

I had the same problem with my new MSI-computer, windows 10.
I've sent the laptop back to MSI, and they replied they found no battery issues.

They have reset my laptop, and the problem seems te be solved... (for now).

So we can conclude it's not a hardware problem?

Solve : Learning resources?

Answer»

Hi I'm new to the forum.

I've recently started working in a computer sales and repair shop, I've discovered that with basic problem solving abilities it's possible to fix a lot of software issues by FOLLOWING other people's instructions, there's no shortage of forum posts about just about every issue, but I'd like to get a grounding in how Windows works, in itself and in relation to hardware:
Registry, processes, file types, DOS commands etc, so I can make more informed diagnoses and be more confident in what I'm doing and why.
Can anyone point me to some good resources where I can learn about that sort of thing?

Thanks in ADVANCE Quote

but I'd like to get a grounding in how Windows works, in itself and in relation to hardware:

Tons of info out there.... the cheapest source is a BUNCH of Google Searches on the subjects that you listed...

Additionally there are many certifications you can go for. The one that I suggest is A+ Certification, but if you dont want the certification I would definitely suggest at least buying a book or FINDING a A+ Certification material book and read that all the way through. It might be a slightly dry read, but it will have a large amount of useful knowledge for anyone who is going to work in a computer repair shop to know the internal workings of the hardware.

For Windows and how it works. There are Microsoft Training courses out there. You will want to PICK specific versions of Windows to focus on as for they have their differences as well as similarities between them. Years ago my one employer paid for me to get the MS-2272 course to get Windows XP Pro Certified https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/learning/course.aspx?cid=2272

There are courses out there for newer versions of Windows. I took a 5 day on-site training and then tested and got my MS-2272 Cert through a Microsoft certified training facility. Employer paid the bill which was sweet.

Thanks One good book on the internals and details of Windows operation is "Windows Internals". It has an entire chapter about what happens during startup and shutdown, for example.
