‘अलंकार’ शब्द में ‘अलम् और ‘कार’ दो शब्द हैं। ‘अलम्’ का अर्थ है, भूषण – जो अलंकृत या भूषित करे, वह अलंकार है । अलंकार काव्य का बाह्य शोभाकारक धर्म है।

जिस प्रकार आभूषण किसी स्त्री के नैसर्गिक सौन्दर्य को बढ़ा देते हैं, उसी प्रकार उपमा, रूपक आदि अलंकार काव्य की रसात्मकता को बढ़ा देतें हैं।
वास्तव में अलंकार वाणी के आभूषण हैं। इनकी सहायता से अभिव्यक्ति में स्पष्टता, भावों में प्रभावशीलता और प्रेषणीयता  तथा भाषा में सौन्दर्य आ जाता है। स्पष्टता और प्रभावोत्पादन के लिए वाणी अलंकार की सहायता लेती है । इसलिए काव्य में इनका महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है । काव्य में रमणीयता और चमत्कार लाने के लिए अलंकारों का प्रयोग आवश्यक तो है, पर अनिवार्य नहीं ।

Alankar ke BHED | अलंकार के भेद:

शब्द और अर्थ को प्रभावित करने के कारण अलंकार मुख्यत: दो प्रकार के होते हैं:

शब्दालंकार और अर्थालंकार

जो अलंकार शब्द और अर्थ दोनों को प्रभावित करते हैं, वे ‘उभयालंकार’ कहलाते हैं ।

इस प्रकार अलंकार के तीन भेद होते हैं-

(1) शब्दालंकार (Shabdalankar)
(2) अर्थालंकार तथा (Ardhalankar)
(3) उभयालंकार (Ubhyalankar)

( 1 ) शब्दालंकार – जो अलंकार जब किसी विशेष शब्द की स्थिति में ही रहे और उस शब्द के स्थान पर कोई पर्यायवाची शब्द रख देने से उसका अस्तित्व न रहे, वह शब्दालंकार है।
ये अलंकार शब्दाश्रित होकर शाब्दिक चमत्कार का ही विशेष संवर्द्धन करते हैं। इसी प्रवृत्ति के आधार पर इन्हें शब्दालंकार कहा जाता है । इनके प्रमुख भेद इस प्रकार हैं-

अनुप्रास अलंकार (Anupras Alankar)
यमक अलंकार (Yamak Alankar)
पुनरुक्ति अलंकार (Punrukti Alankar)
वीप्सा अलंकार (Vipsa Alankar)
वक्रोक्ति अलंकार (Vkrokti Alankar) तथा
श्लेष अलंकार (Shlesh Alankar) इत्यादि ।
(2) अर्थालंकार– जिस शब्द से जो अलंकार सिद्ध होता है यदि उस शब्द के स्थान पर उसका समानार्थी शब्द रख देने से भी वह अलंकार यथापूर्व बना रहे, तो अर्थालंकार कहलाता है ।

अर्थालंकार की संख्या सर्वाधिक है –
उपमा अलंकार (Upma Alankar)
अनन्वय अलंकार (Ananvay Alankar)
उपमेयोपमा अलंकार (Upmeyopma Alankar)
प्रतीप अलंकार (Prtip Alankar)
रूपक अलंकार (RUPAK Alankar)
भ्रान्तिमान अलंकार (Bhrantiman Alankar)
संदेह अलंकार (SANDEH Alankar)
दीपक अलंकार (Deepak Alankar)
उत्प्रेक्षा अलंकार (Utpreksha Alankar)
अपहृति अलंकार (Aphriti Alankar)
अतिशयोक्ति अलंकार (Atishyokti Alankar) इत्यादि

(3) उभयालंकार – इसे शब्दार्थालंकार भी कहा जाता है । जैसा कि ऊपर कहा जा चुका है कि जो अलंकार शब्द और अर्थ दोनों के आश्रित रहकर दोनों को प्रभावित करते हैं, वे उभयालंकार कहलाते हैं । इस जाति के अलंकारों की संख्या सीमित है । संसृष्टि तथा संकर इसी जाति के अलंकार हैं ।

कुछ प्रमुख शब्दालंकार:

अनुप्रास अलंकार (Anupras Alankar)– वर्णों की आवृत्ति को अनुप्रास कहते हैं। आवृत्ति का अर्थ है, दुहराना। इस अलंकार में किसी वर्ण या व्यंजन की एक बार या अनेक वणों या व्यंजनों की अनेक धार आवृत्ति होती है ।

उदाहरण -वर्ण की एक बार आवृत्ति:

हैं जनम लेते जगह में एक ही,
एक ही पौधा उन्हें है पालता ।

इसकी पहली पत्ति में ‘ज’ की एक बार आवृत्ति तथा दूसरी पत्ति में ‘प’ की भी एक ही बार आवृत्ति हुई है ।

एक वर्ण की अनेक बार आवृति :

‘तरनि तनुजा तट-तमाल तरुवर बहु छाए।’
इसमें ‘त’ की अनेक बार आवृत्ति हुई है।

अनुप्रास में वणाँ की आवृत्ति का भी एक नियम है । या तो वे शब्द के प्रारंभ में, या मध्य में या अन्त में आते हैं, तभी अनुप्रास माने जायेंगे अन्यथा नहीं ।

अनुप्रास अलंकार के तीन भेद हैं –

(1) वृत्यनुप्रास
(2) छेकानुप्रास तथा
(3) लाटानुप्रास ।

अनुप्रास अलंकार के कुछ और उदाहरण :

(क) दिनान्त था थे दिननाथ डूबते ।
सधेनु आते गृह ग्वाल-बाल थे ।। (‘दन’ तथा ‘ल’ की आवृत्ति)

(ख) मुदित महीपति मंदिर आए । सेवक सचिव सुमंत बुलाए ।
(‘म’ तथा ‘स’ की आवृत्ति)

सबै सहायक सबल कै, कोउ न निबल सहाय ।
पवन जगावत आग को दीपहिं देत बुझाय ।

कारज धीरे होतु है, काहे होत अधीर ।
समय पाय तरुवर फलैं, केतक सींचौ नीर ।

(ड) बड़ सुख सार पाओल तुआ तीरे ।
छोडइत निकट नयन बह नीरे ।
(च) जे न मित्र दुख होहिं दुखारी, तिन्हहि विलोकत पातक भारी ।
निज दुख गिरि सम रज करि जाना, मित्रक दुख रज मेरु समाना ।

(छ) प्रभुजी तुम दीपक हम बाती,
जाकी जोति बरे दिन राती ।

(ज) माधव कत तोर करब। बड़ाई ।
