Machinery does not reform society, repair institutions, build social networks, or produce democratic culture. Explain.

Answer»

Machinery is useful as a tool for bringing about these things. It is the will of the people which is important. Unless people are interested in social reformation, in getting their institutions reformed, or building social networks, or producing a democratic culture, no means of technical communication can help them. Internet, for example, can be only a tool, among money, to bring about social change. It can only be a facilitator.

Answer»

Uses and Drawbacks of Technology Science and technology has made more rapid every process of production, distribution and preservation in the fields of agriculture, industry, medicines, fertilizers, metallurgy and textile industry. Almost every field of mass production has benefited from advanced technology in that field. The advantages of technological advances are so many and so indispensable that it appears to be a misnomer to mention disadvantages of technological advances. Technology has made things so convenient and accessible that life has become unimaginable without it.

Uses of Technology-Technological advances have provided an efficient way to do things. Education system has got a fresh lease of life because of the use of computer technology. The classroom has turned into a hub of global level discoveries and researches about the subject under discussion. The use of Internet has connected the student to the rest of the world. Agriculture and industry which needed dozens and dozens working hands, are now being run by a few people with the technologically advanced machinery and equipment’s. Most of the processes have now been automated and are cost efficient. Medical discoveries have become more rapid and accurate because of machines aided by computers.

Disadvantages of Technology-Despite a large number of uses, technology has caused heavy dependency on computer and other forms of technology. If machines or computers break or crash, a total disability is caused until the fault is corrected. This has made us less self-reliant and more dependent on technology. Though technology makes production, distribution and preservation cost-efficient, this very cost-efficiency makes human work less valuable. Machinery automates processes and replaces men. More and more working hands go out of job when more and more advanced machinery is used. Thus, it can be said that technology is a double-edged weapon which makes mass production possible, but it also throws working men into unemployment.

34.

With the powerful emergence of internet, social media has become a powerful means to mobilize the public. As a result, social media plays a virtual role in deciding the democratic destiny of a country. Write an essay on ‘Social Media and General Election’.(इन्टरनेट के सशक्त प्रादुर्भाव के साथ ही, सामाजिक मीडिया जनता को गतिशील बनाने का शक्तिशाली तरीका बन गया है।

Answer»

Social Media and General Election Three social media giants – Facebook, Twitter and Google have become major players in General Elections of Indian Parliament. Political parties and candidates compete with one another on social media for spreading messages, breaking news and updating information on their respective policies. They are in constant contact with their followers on the social media. During elections there is a substantial increase in social media’s Indian traffic and usage.

There were 100 million users of social media which doubled during 2014 general elections. There is hardly any politician of whatever stature who doesn’t have an account on a micro-blogging site. The Prime Ministerial candidate, Modi, had 3.90 million followers on Twitter. Advertisements of the parties and candidates flash on the social media and thus influence voters all over the country. In fact, today’s Indian general election can hardly be thought of without the social media.

38.

An element ‘X’ belongs to the second group of periodic table. What is the formula of its chloride?

Answer»

Since element X belongs to second group so element X has 2 valence electrons. Hence the formula of its chloride will be XCl2.

39.

Which one has the bigger size? Na (11) or Cl (17); Cl (17) or F (9)

Answer»

(i) Na has bigger size than Cl because effective nuclear charge increases from left to right in a period. Due to this effective nuclear charge, the electronegativity increases and the attraction of nucleus on valence shell electrons also increases. So the size of atom reduces.

(ii) Cl has bigger size than F because number of shells increases down a group. So the size of atom also increases down a group.

40.

Which has bigger size; Cl or Cl-?

Answer»

Cl- has bigger size as compared to Cl because Cl- has more number of electrons than Cl and nucleus can hold less electrons tightly than more electrons. So the attraction on Cl- become less. Hence, the Size of Cl- become bigger than Cl.

41.

In each of the following pairs, choose the atom having the bigger size :(a) Mg (At. No.12) or Cl (At. No. 17)(b) Na (At. No. 11) or K (At. No. 19)

Answer»

(a) Mg since atomic size decreases from left to right in a period.

(b) K since atomic size increases on going down a group .

42.

Size of sodium atom is bigger than that of hydrogen atom. Why ?

Answer» Size increases down the group as new shells are added.
43.

Out of the elements X and Y which has bigger atomic radius ? Give reason to justify your answer.(i) X has atomic number 18 and atomic mass 40.(ii) Y has atomic number 20 and atomic mass 40.

Answer»

Radius of Y is bigger than that of X.

In 'X' the number of shells is three while in Y it is four.

44.

Amongst elements with atomic number 11 and 14, which has a bigger atomic size?

Answer»

Both the elements with atomic number 11 and 14 lie in the same group so when we move from right to left in a period atomic size decreases. So, an element with atomic number 11 will be in bigger in size.
