रुग्णावस्था में प्रायः व्यक्ति को एक लम्बी अवधि बिस्तर पर लेटकर व्यतीत करनी पड़ती है; अतः रोगी के लिए बिस्तर का अत्यधिक महत्त्व होता है। एक अच्छे एवं उपयुक्त बिस्तर की मुख्य विशेषताएँ निम्नलिखित होनी चाहिए|

(1) रोग के अनुकूल बिस्तर:
रोग के अनुकूल बिस्तर से रोगी को अधिक सुविधाएँ एवं आराम मिलता है। उदाहरण के लिए-गठिया एवं हृदय रोग से पीड़ित व्यक्तियों के लिए कम्बलों का बिस्तर अधिक उपयुक्त रहता है।

(2) स्वच्छ बिस्तर:
साफ-सुथरा एवं स्वच्छ बिस्तर हर प्रकार के रोगी के लिए लाभदायक रहता। है। बिस्तर की अधिकांश वस्तुएँ; जैसे-दरी, चादर व तकिए के गिलाफ आदि सूती कपड़े के होने चाहिए ताकि उन्हें अच्छी प्रकार गर्म पानी से धोकर साफ किया जा सके। रोगी के बिस्तर को प्रतिदिन तीव्र धूप में सुखाना चाहिए। ऐसा करने से खटमल आदि के होने का भय नहीं रहता है तथा अनेक प्रकार के अन्य कीटाणु भी नष्ट हो जाते हैं। इस प्रकार स्वच्छ एवं कीटाणुरहित बिस्तर शीघ्र स्वास्थ्य प्राप्त करने में रोगी की सहायता करता है।

(3) आरामदायक बिस्तर:
सलवटरहित कोमल बिस्तर रोगी को पर्याप्त आराम देता है; अतः समय-समय पर रोगी के बिस्तर से सलवटें दूर करते रहना चाहिए।

(4) ऋतु के अनुकूल बिस्तर:
ग्रीष्म ऋतु में रोगी को ओढ़ने के लिए महीन सूती चादर तथा शीत ऋतु में कम्बल अथवा लिहाफ देना सुविधाजनक रहता है।

(5) प्रकाशएवं वायु की उचित व्यवस्था:

विभिन्न प्रकार के बिस्तर लगाना

बिस्तर लगाते समय रोगी के आराम व सुविधाओं का अधिकाधिक ध्यान रखना चाहिए। भिन्न-भिन्न रोगियों के लिए उनकी सुविधा एवं दशा के दृष्टिकोण से निम्न प्रकार के बिस्तर लगाना उपयुक्त रहता है

(1) साधारण बिस्तर:
बिस्तर लगाने से पूर्व निम्नलिखित बातों का ध्यान रखना चाहिए

  1. पलंग की निवाड़, स्प्रिंग आदि ठीक प्रकार कसी हों,
  2. पलंग दीवार से इतनी दूरी पर हो कि परिचारिका को उसके चारों ओर पर्याप्त स्थान मिल सके तथा
  3. रोगी को तीव्र वायु अथवा धूप न लगे।

पलंग पर पहले दरी बिछाई जाती है। ध्यान रहे कि दरी में सलवटें न हों। सिकुड़ने से बचाने के लिए दरी को पलंग के साथ बाँध देना चाहिए। अब गद्दा बिछाया जाता है। गद्दे के ऊपर सफेद चादर बिछाते समय सलवटों को दूर किया जाता है। चादर को गद्दे के चारों ओर दबा देना चाहिए। मौसम के अनुसार लिहाफ, कम्बल या चादर को ओढ़ने के प्रयोग में लाया जाता है। इन्हें भली प्रकार से तह बनाकर पलंग पर रोगी के पैरों की ओर रख दिया जाता है। सिर के नीचे एक मुलायम तकिया रख दिया जाता है और अन्त में रोगी को लिटाकर उसे छाती तक आवश्यक कपड़े से ढक देते हैं। ओढ़ने वाले कपड़े को तीनों ओर से गद्दे के नीचे दबा देना उपयुक्त रहता है ताकि अनजाने में रोगी के इधर-उधर होने से यह सिकुड़ने न पाए।

(2) विशेष बिस्तर:
यदि रोगी ठीक प्रकार से उठ-बैठ नहीं सकता तो उसके लिए विशेष बिस्तर लगाना सुविधाजनक रहता है। इस प्रकार के बिस्तर में सामान्य बिस्तर के अतिरिक्त रबर-शीट तथा ड्रॉ-शीट लगाई जाती है। रबर-शीट के स्थान पर मोमजामा या रैक्सीन भी लगाई जा सकती है। यह रोगी की कमर से घुटने तक की लम्बाई की होती है। पहले रबर-शीट लगाकर फिर उसके ऊपर ड्रॉ-शीट (छोटी चादर) बिछाई जाती है। रबर-शीट व ड्रॉ-शीट की सलवटें निकालकर चौड़ाई में दोनों ओर गद्दे के नीचे दबा देनी होती है ताकि यह फिर से सिकुड़ने न पाए।

(3) ऑपरेशन का बिस्तर:
ऑपरेशन अथवा शल्य-क्रिया वाले रोगी का बिस्तर भी विशेष बिस्तर की ही तरह होता है। इसमें एक तौलिया तथा एक रबर-शीट अथवा मोमजामे का टुकड़ा अलग से रखी जाता है, जिससे कि रोगी के वमन करने से अथवा दूध व चाय आदि के फैलने पर ब्रिस्तर गन्दा न होने के पाए। रोगी के बिस्तर के नीचे चिलमची तथा मल-मूत्र विसर्जन पात्र भी रखे जाते हैं।

(4) अस्थि-भंग का बिस्तर:
हड्डी टूटने पर प्रायः रोगी को एक लम्बी अवधि तक बिस्तर पर लेटना पड़ता है। अतः उसे एक-सा चौरस बिस्तर चाहिए। मेरुदण्ड अथवा कूल्हे की हड्डी टूटने पर रोगी सीधा नहीं लेट पाता तथा पैर की हड्डी टूटने पर रोगी को पैर कुछ ऊँचा उठाकर रखना होता है। ऐसी अवस्था में फ़ैक्चर बोर्ड अथवा बैड-कैडिल की आवश्यकता पड़ती है। ये प्रायः 2.5 सेमी मोटे, 30 सेमी चौड़े तथा एक मीटर लम्बे होते हैं। इनका उपयोग घायल के टूटे अंगों पर वस्त्रों के भार को रोकने के लिए किया जाता है।

(5) जले का बिस्तर:
यह भी एक प्रकार से विशेष बिस्तर ही होता है। जले हुए स्थान पर अक्सर न तो पट्टी ही बाँधी जाती है और न ही इसे कपड़े से ढकना सरल होता है। जले हुए स्थान से प्रायः पानी स्रावित होता रहता है; अतः इसके लिए विशेष व्यवस्था की आवश्यकता होती है। बिस्तर पर रबर-शीट या मोमजामे काटुकड़ा बिछाकर उसे ड्रॉ-शीट से ढक दिया जाता है। जले हुए स्थान के ऊपर बैड-कैडिल का उपयोग कर इसे महीन कपड़े अथवा कम्बल इत्यादि से मौसम के अनुसार ढक दिया जाता है।

(6) कम्बल का बिस्तर:
कुछ विशेष प्रकार के रोगियों के लिए कम्बलों के बिस्तर की आवश्यकता होती है। उदाहरण के लिए-हृदय रोग तथा गठिया आदि से पीड़ित व्यक्ति। ऐसा इसलिए आवश्यक होता है कि रोगी को पूरी तरह से गर्म रखना होता है। इस प्रकार के बिस्तर में गद्दे बिछाने तक की क्रिया एक सामान्य बिस्तर की तरह होती है। इसमें गद्दे के ऊपर एक अथवा दो कम्बल बिछाए जाते हैं। ओढ़ने के लिए रोगी को कम्बल ही दिया जाता है।
