Solve : Fractions in WORD? |
Answer» Am having trouble typing FRACTIONS in WORD using Windows 8.1 Why not just type the fraction? Typing 1/2 is fewer key strokes than Alt 0189. Fewer keystrokes, but a different END result. For some people, a correctly appearing fraction has the numerator above the denominator, preferably vertically above. Guzeppi: a. Have you checked that Num Lock is on? b. Have you changed your usual Word font recently? (Or some other setting?) c. Does ALT + 0189 give you a blank in all fonts? And on here like this ½ - and in Notepad? d. Have you tried other ALT + numpad combinations e.g. ALT + 130 é? e. Have you got a spare keyboard? Quote from: Salmon Trout on February 08, 2014, 12:04:23 PM Fewer keystrokes, but a different end result. The two methods give me the same result in Word 2007. In WordPad and Notepad, Alt 0189 yields the same looking fraction as the first one in your image, which is what Word displays. Quote from: soybean on February 08, 2014, 12:56:09 PM The two methods give me the same result in Word 2007. In WordPad and Notepad, Alt 0189 yields the same looking fraction as the first one in your image, which is what Word displays. It does if you have the appropriate AutoCorrect option selected In Word 2003: Tools - "AutoCorrect Options" - choose the "AutoFormat As You Type" tab - under "Replace as you type" - check "Fractions (1/2) with fraction character (½)" I think in 2007 it's under Word Options - Proofing. I forgot I had turned every AutoCorrect option off; I FIND them an annoyance. The only fractions that are automatically converted in that way are: 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4. However I have found that if you want 'proper' fractions like these... ...you can do this: Place the insertion point where you want the fraction to appear. Press CTRL+F9 to insert field braces. Between the field braces, type the following EQ \F(a,b) where a and b are the numerator and denominator of the fraction. For example, if you want to create the fraction 1/8, the field would look like this { EQ \F(1,8)} With the insertion point in the field, press SHIFT+F9. Quote from: Salmon Trout on February 08, 2014, 01:53:31 PM Between the field braces, type the following Notes: not case-sensitive; numerator & denominator can be any text you like. Font formatting (e.g. superscript, italic, etc) can be applied. |

Solve : Please help me get java to run? |
Answer» HI everyone, I've been through it all trying to get java to run. The best I can tell is 2 things: 1) IE has Java Plug-In SSV Helper 32 bit plus Java Plug-In2 SSV Helper 32 bit. No other java files there. I only have Java 64 bit installed. 2) I went and looked at program files and both the Program Files Folder has Java and Program Folders (x86) has Java and they are a bit different from each other. There is also a Program Data Folder I checked and the Java folder is there, but is empty. (funny that when I looked in these files, I never say java helper apps) I've done everything possible that I found in your self-help, other recommendations from pages on the web and nothing works. My pc is a Dell All In One, with Windows 7, Windows Home Premium Java Verification says: "Your Java is working" Oracle Java SE 7 Update 15 Windows 7 6.1 Java Architecture: 64 bit And Java version site says "You have the right version". Please post any possible ideas I should try? Pennie77 You may have TRIED this already but...Try going to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Java. Navigate to where it was originally installed and delete the folder to remove files the UNINSTALLER didn't remove. Download/Install the latest version Also, I believe the current version of Java is Java 7 Update 51 and you are SAYING you have Update 15. |

Solve : Windows 8.1 and Outlook Web App? |
Answer» Hi: I recently update my notebook to Windows 8.1 after repeated prompting from Microsoft. Since I wasn't comfortable with 8, I hoped this would be better. One thing that seems to have happened is that my Microsoft "Outlook Web App" mail now seems to run very slowly when connecting to the internet. I don't know if my router (Zyxel) isn't matching with 8.1 or if there is a problem with 8.1 and the MS Outlook Web app. At any rate, because I use this for work and need and sometimes it even times out and I have to REWRITE letters to wait and wait until a letter actually is sent, I'm thinking I should revert to Windows 8. |

Solve : Advanced Excel puzzle / problem? |
Answer» Hello everyone ... I cant get my head around how it should look?I'll admit I may be missing the something but I can't get my head around the requirements and the logic as stated by you. Perhaps you need to re-think how this should work. Hi all Sorry I have not replied in a while I have been working away on it and I think I found a solution (although a very long winded one) Had several issues with it (under statement) Problem 1 - How to only show unique prizes won and not total prizes and then display the names the number of unique prizes not total prizes Answer - Was easier than I thought after thinking about it really. On sheet one of my workbook where I had all the individual tables for finishing positions I added a column shown below in column BK to count cells containing text, which basically counts unique prizes. Then the subtotal of this count was inserted onto the main worksheet showing the total unique prizes per person shown in Column E Using the same formula that was given to me by a user on another forum, I ran his formula from this new column instead of the total count which resulted in names being displayed the number of times relative to unique prizes won and not total (Thank you shg for setting me on the right path!) (formula's shown below) Problem 2 - How to get the prize ID's and number of prizes won to show in columns M2:N500 Answer - This was insane the more I thought about it, I naively thought I could do it all from the variable table on the main worksheet, but of course this would not work as when the figures changed in the variable table, so then would the prize ID's and number of prizes also change. So.... I had to go the very very long way around of creating replicas of the prize ID's and number of prizes won in a descending table as shown below From this set of information, on the main worksheet I had intended to use the simple enough formula to again replicate it to allow me to copy and paste as values on a blank worksheet, then highlighting and deleting the blank rows, but of course the rows were not blank even if they looked so (stupid excel) I was stuck on this for ages, probably because my head hurt - but then I simply added to the formula to show text (the letter t) if a cell contained nothing as shown below: Now with cells all containing something visible, I am able to now copy and paste as values these columns, then push f5, select special, then 'constants' and untick everything other than text! That way I can delete all the rows containing text and shift the rows up so all the Prize ID's and number of each prize are in order. Then I simply copy paste this into the main workbook along side the names of the prize winners and tada!!! Magic Worksheet 1 part 1 Only variable shown is the Buy-in amount and the number of entrants - Prizes are calculated automatically depending on these figures Worksheet 1 part 2 These individual tables are the Prize ID calculations depending on the size of overall prize won Formula in Cell BB5:BB15 is - =IF(BA>=1,$S$2-(AZ5*BC5),$S$2) - a basic formula to look up overall prize remaining and deduct prize ID amount if remaining overall prize is enough, then move on down the smaller amounts. Cells BD16 / BJ16 etc were important to display prize winners the number of times on worksheet 2 Worksheet 2 This is where prize winners and their prizes won are displayed Cells B:2:B500 are variable and manually copy pasted in from competition results Depending on the competition buy in and number of entrants selected on worksheet 1, the prizes for these players is automatically displayed in cells C2:F500 Column E is the unique prizes taken from worksheet one (shown above) Formula in cell F2 is - =SUM(E1, F1) and then dragged down The table in I1:L12 is for review purposes only and just checking everything matches up with prize allocated to player in Column C Formula in J2:K12 is very!! long winded but does the job - Cells in formula obviously adjusted for each different cell - very time consuming as could not drag formula =IF($H$2=1,DATA!BB18,IF($H$2=2,DATA!BH18,IF($H$2=3,DATA!BN18,IF($H$2=4,DATA!BT18,IF($H$2=5,DATA!BZ18,IF($H$2=6,DATA!CF18,IF($H$2=7,DATA!CL18,IF($H$2=8,DATA!CR18,IF($H$2=9,DATA!CX18,IF($H$2=10,DATA!DD18,IF($H$2=11,DATA!DJ18,IF($H$2=12,DATA!DP18,IF($H$2=13,DATA!DV18,IF($H$2=14,DATA!EB18,IF($H$2=15,DATA!EH18,IF($H$2=16,DATA!EN18,IF($H$2=17,DATA!ET18,IF($H$2=18,DATA!EZ18,IF($H$2=19,DATA!FF18,IF($H$2=20,DATA!FL18,IF($H$2=21,DATA!FR18,IF($H$2=22,DATA!FX18,IF($H$2=23,DATA!GD18,IF($H$2=24,DATA!GJ18,IF($H$2=25,DATA!GP18,IF($H$2=26,DATA!GV18,IF($H$2=27,DATA!HB18,IF($H$2=28,DATA!HH18,IF($H$2=29,DATA!HN18,IF($H$2=30,DATA!HT18,IF($H$2=31,DATA!HZ18,IF($H$2=32,DATA!IF18,IF($H$2=33,DATA!IL18,IF($H$2=34,DATA!IR18,IF($H$2=35,DATA!IX18,IF($H$2=36,DATA!JD18,IF($H$2=37,DATA!JJ18,IF($H$2=38,DATA!JP18,IF($H$2=39,DATA!JV18,IF($H$2=40,DATA!KB18,IF($H$2=41,DATA!KH18,IF($H$2=42,DATA!KN18,IF($H$2=43,DATA!KT18,IF($H$2=44,DATA!KZ18,IF($H$2=45,DATA!LF18,IF($H$2=46,DATA!LL18,IF($H$2=47,DATA!LR18,IF($H$2=48,DATA!LX18,IF($H$2=49,DATA!MD18,IF($H$2=50,DATA!MJ18,0)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) In Cells M1:N500 the formula is - =IF(DATA!MN2=0,"t",IF(DATA!MN2="","t",DATA!MN2)) Basically a look up on worksheet 1 where all the individual tables for prize winners is put into one long table and shows everything for all the prizes won (or not won) (The reason there is t in some cells is explained below) As you can see, in Column P, the number of names of each person is displayed the number of unique prizes they have won. Whew - Anyone else EXHAUSTED yet?! The biggest issue I was having was with columns Q and R - how to find a way to display the prizes that each person had won. The way I got around it was with correlating all the individual prize tables into one long column and the results displayed in columns M and N I had planned to simply copy paste these columns and then highlight blank cells and delete, shifting cells up - but of course even though the cells looked blank, they were not (the wonders of excel!) I was driving myself mad, but solution was simple enough - as in the formula above that was used - =IF(DATA!MN2=0,"t",IF(DATA!MN2="","t",DATA!MN2)) - adding "t" to any blank cells meant I could / can now copy paste (as values) and then push f5, select special, select constants, then untick everything other than text which would allow me to delete every cell that contained a "t" - shifting cells up and BOOM! prize ID's and the number of prizes was now in line with Column P and the names of the prize winners. Phew!! It is not exactly pretty, it was not easy but it works Quote =IF($H$2=1,DATA!BB18,IF($H$2=2,DATA!BH18,IF($H$2=3,DATA!BN18,IF($H$2=4,DATA!BT18,IF($H$2=5,DATA!BZ18,IF($H$2=6,DATA!CF18,IF($H$2=7,DATA!CL18,IF($H$2=8,DATA!CR18,IF($H$2=9,DATA!CX18,IF($H$2=10,DATA!DD18,IF($H$2=11,DATA!DJ18,IF($H$2=12,DATA!DP18,IF($H$2=13,DATA!DV18,IF($H$2=14,DATA!EB18,IF($H$2=15,DATA!EH18,IF($H$2=16,DATA!EN18,IF($H$2=17,DATA!ET18,IF($H$2=18,DATA!EZ18,IF($H$2=19,DATA!FF18,IF($H$2=20,DATA!FL18,IF($H$2=21,DATA!FR18,IF($H$2=22,DATA!FX18,IF($H$2=23,DATA!GD18,IF($H$2=24,DATA!GJ18,IF($H$2=25,DATA!GP18,IF($H$2=26,DATA!GV18,IF($H$2=27,DATA!HB18,IF($H$2=28,DATA!HH18,IF($H$2=29,DATA!HN18,IF($H$2=30,DATA!HT18,IF($H$2=31,DATA!HZ18,IF($H$2=32,DATA!IF18,IF($H$2=33,DATA!IL18,IF($H$2=34,DATA!IR18,IF($H$2=35,DATA!IX18,IF($H$2=36,DATA!JD18,IF($H$2=37,DATA!JJ18,IF($H$2=38,DATA!JP18,IF($H$2=39,DATA!JV18,IF($H$2=40,DATA!KB18,IF($H$2=41,DATA!KH18,IF($H$2=42,DATA!KN18,IF($H$2=43,DATA!KT18,IF($H$2=44,DATA!KZ18,IF($H$2=45,DATA!LF18,IF($H$2=46,DATA!LL18,IF($H$2=47,DATA!LR18,IF($H$2=48,DATA!LX18,IF($H$2=49,DATA!MD18,IF($H$2=50,DATA!MJ18,0)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) Quote Whew - Anyone else exhausted yet?! YUP... This is the madness I was going through to get mine to work and the above logic x about 200 or so formula's of lengths like this. One little typo and your digging for a while to find that needle in the haystack that is the problem. Frustrating for me was that it was sometimes working while other times malfunctioning. I decided to pull the plug on it and just go the route of importing data from CSV file to C++ program instead. Glad you got yours to work. Be sure to save multiple copies of it on a backup media etc as for this is something you will likely NEVER want to have to recreate from scratch ever again ... Trust me |

Solve : No devices fully recognized by windows 7 compy? |
Answer» Hi. I am really hoping someone can help me with this as I've had no luck anywhere else. Here's the trouble: anything I plug into my COMPUTER (kindle, external hard drive, etc.) is only partially recognized by my computer but is UNABLE to be accessed in any way. For example, when I attach my kindle, the computer recognizes it insofar as it DINGS and shows the icon to 'safely remove hardware' but when I go to remove the hardware it does not appear there, nor is it shown under 'my computer' where USUALLY I can gain access to any device. I have followed all the standard instructions for when a device is not recognized at all, but in this case it doesn't do anything, as the computer is somehow recognizing something but not all of it (the drivers for the devices are there). I am hoping that it is just a simple software thing, perhaps I deleted something accidentally. But until I fix this I can't transfer books to my new and empty kindle and I can't backup any of my files. |

Solve : Replacing obsolete software.? |
Answer» ***sigh***Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 09, 2014, 11:09:17 AM Well, few of us have penfriend life with very old computers. I was penfriend-zoned by a ball-POINT once.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 09, 2014, 10:28:42 AM And then you have mainframe oriented SYSTEMS like THEOS, which have become the bane of my existence...That does sound bad. We have strictly stuck with IBM hardware and operating systems (OS/390 and now Z/os). Most of the software we run today is still continually developed and updated by the vendors who created them decades ago. I guess we have gotten lucky over the years. I have only seen our mainframe crash once in 18 years I have been with the COMPANY. That was the day they were switching over to a new battery backup system. The installer literally cut the power to the mainframe before connecting it to the new battery backup system. I wonder if he still has a job. Not sure why they decided to try and do that in the middle of the week while everyone was working but whatever. I don't get paid to make those decisions.Nowadays there is really no excuse for using ridiculously out of date stuff, decent spec refurbished PCs cost very little and there are modern alternatives to almost all old software except for maybe some very old and badly designed software used internally within companies. People are just scared of CHANGING - They don't want to use a new piece of software that does the task they need much better than the old one because they may need to take a few hours to learn how to work it. Take XP for example, it's coming up for 13 years old but people just won't LEAVE it and move onto something new (probably because they are scared or something) - I mean, some people behave almost religiously about XP! I recently moved my granny onto Windows 7 from XP and like most others she didn't like the idea of change - Apart from having to point out that the start button no longer said start on it and that "I don't like the new solitaire" - I have not heard a single complaint or issue! Quote Well, few of us have penfriend life with very old computers.I also have loads of vintage PCs from the early to mid 80s up until the early 90s - Doesn't mean I actually use them to get work done! They mostly sit around and are occasionally used for playing about with or running old games. |

Solve : Cant open saved Office documents? |
Answer» All of a sudden, I cannot open ANY Microsoft Office documents that I have saved on my COMPUTER. Even if I create a new document, save it, and close it, I am not ABLE to open it a minute later. A dialog box comes up that says, "Publisher (or Word, etc) cannot find the file you specified. The next dialog box will let you browse to LOCATE the file on your hard drive or floppy disk." I tried repairing and re-installing Office, but that didn't work. I have had these files saved on my desktop for months and haven't had any problems opening them until now. Also, I was reading about error codes with this subject. I'm not sure if it helps, but the dialog box has the error code 1100174. Thanks in advance for any help with this! So, you still have Word files saved on your desktop, right? If you double click on them, do they open in Word? YES, Word opens. Then the dialog box pops up with the error message, but my document doesn't open.Do you also have some Word files in your Documents folder? Can you open them? |

Answer» I got a copy of some software from "a friend" at class. He said he didn't need it, that it was good blah, blah, blah. for an old outdated copy of Lightwave. Earlier versions (Lightwave 10 and earlier from what I can tell) of Lightwave require a USB dongle before they will work. Coincidentally the behaviour when it's not plugged in is precisely what you have described. It will also happen if the Lightwave License.key file doesn't match the dongle ID, though since you haven't mentioned it I'm inclined to suspect you simply don't have the REQUIRED USB Dongle. Quote from: soybean on FEBRUARY 17, 2014, 01:22:30 PM While the consensus on this forum generally frowns on use of any registry cleaners, I believe a registry cleaner might be helpful in your situation. NEVER use any registry cleaners. Period. The best of them do absolutely nothing helpful and the worst of them will leave your system unusable.Thank You Everyone: Soybean; I already use CCleaner. I also use: Malwarebytes YAC (Yet Another Cleaner) Unhackme SpywareBlaster and whatever comes bundled with Win-7 (microsft Firewall) I to am leary about using a registry cleaner, since I'm from the "creative" side of the computer industry, and know nothing about the "techie" side. (other than making my own computer, and maybe HTML4) I was hoping that someone that's good with Newtek Lightwave might be able to give me a hint about what type/named files I should look for, so I could specifically pick out the file/s that need to be taken out. and NO there wasn't ever anything said about using/needing a dongle with it. it did mention in the NFO file that came with the 2nd one, that no dongle is needed for the install with the keygen it came with. So, it's true, some companies do install "secret files" to stop people from ever trying to install their software ever again? huh? Sounds sneaky and sinister to me. but such as life, k-sa-ra-sa-ra... Quote So, it's true, some companies do install "secret files" to stop people from ever trying to install their software ever again? huh?Earlier versions of lightwave use a hardware dongle and a license.key file. When I reopen the worksheet, the Data is displayed and not the Formulas. What am I missing? THANK You and I am looking forward to help. Steven Running Windows 7, Ult 32 Bit. I was unable to duplicate this with Excel 2010. I opened a worksheet, "Show Formulas" like you said, and then saved and closed it. When I opened it back up again, it was STILL showing the formulas. Is there any REASON that the file is or could be unsaveable or read-only? Can you make other changes than showing formulas that are saved? And, I am not able to duplicate it with Excel 2007, which works the same as Excel 2010 in with regard to displaying formulas in the cells. |

Solve : Can I virus scan D: drive?? |
Answer» I added a new drive (D: ) to my desktop for some extra space & wanted to scan it for viruses, but all of the ones I have used only scan the C: drive. The OP's question should probably be "How do I scan a particular drive with XXX antivirus?" After seeing the McAfee Youtube Rant Video, featuring John McAfee himself with adult humor ... you have to WONDER if he would make a XXX Antivirus... sorry if I derailed this... but seeing XXX Antivirus gave me a flashback of that youtube video that I had a laugh at. Surprised the content filter didnt pick up on XXX and censor it. Probably would be best to go with: Quote The OP's question should probably be "How do I scan a particular drive with [ Antivirus Name Here ]?"Quote from: DaveLembke on October 19, 2013, 04:15:19 PM Surprised the content filter didnt pick up on XXX and censor it. I guess that's a joke; a content filter replaces actual profanity with placeholders such as Xs or hyphens or asterisks; those things are not themselves profane. XXXXXXThanks for the replies. I think DaveLembke has a valid point. I have SAS and MalwareBytes (free) on my desktop computer as well as MSE to name a few. HJT etc. etc. Oh and yes I found MSE does have that option (thanks Salmon Trout). I wanted to give the drive a thorough going over. Im (reasonably) sure I had the drive installed when I tried to virus scan it. Adding the drive has come about from other issues on this computer. Ultimately I think it was a flat battery in the motherboard. 2 beeps at startup, cannot find SATA 0, slow to load Windows past the blue screen, so on. So I am going through the system bit by bit and decided to add another drive. However I suspect the C: drive may actually be ready to fail. (That might be a different posting later)? Back to the question yes I tried to look around on the Antivirus scan on SAS & MalwareBytes, but Im (reasonably) sure/unsure I had the drive installed when I tried to virus scan it. I guess I will just have to step back for a minute and start at the beginning to make sure I am doing it all right and fix 1 issue at a time.Quote from: ImnoGuru on October 19, 2013, 09:30:55 PM ..., but Im (reasonably) sure/unsure ....So, which is it, sure or unsure? Quote from: ImnoGuru on October 19, 2013, 09:30:55 PM Im (reasonably) sure I had the drive installed when I tried to virus scan it. Reasonably sure or definitely sure, or completely unsure, if you didn't have it installed, you definitely wouldn't have been able to scan it. Quote from: Salmon Trout on October 20, 2013, 10:58:03 AM Reasonably sure or definitely sure, or completely unsure, if you didn't have it installed, you definitely wouldn't have been able to scan it.Somebody has done some editing. All right.. Now I am CONFIDENT that I did actually have it installed when I did the scan. I know this because I just tried it again. and it failed. So into "my computer" and it is not there too? Even after I rebooted just to make sure? Ok lets try this again. At first I thought it was the ram, then considered a Windows problem. Then this computer came up with the 2 beeps and a sloooow start. So I changed the battery & added the new drive. I added the new drive to the wrong connection SATA 0 INSTEAD of 1 and it was seen as the master. (So the drive works and is recognized. It also has Win XP on it.) I think I found why my computer did not scan this drive. Going through the BIOS, I found the settings for a second (slave) drive was switched to "Off", for a better term. Now I have it as "Auto". So lets see if that makes a difference. Now thats a lot better. I have been able to scan the other drive and removed all threats that were indicated. Since then I have done several other scans after going on the net and removed any threats that presented. My conclusion is; that the original problem was more than just the wrong connection and potentially the battery was failing simultaneously. Having removed the battery (IMHO) the bios reset to accept only the master. Quote from: Allan on October 19, 2013, 03:54:33 AM All AV's allow you to select the drives to scan to the best of my knowledge. Also I found that all the AV's (that I have on my computer) are selectable as to what drive to scan. Now on to the next problem for me then. This computer doesnt have any conflicts, yet is slow to boot into Windows. So I am going to try to upgrade the memory from 2 gig to 3 or 4 gig to see if it performs better. As for scanning problem fixed. Thanks everyone. |

Solve : FRAPS & VirtualDub - Can this convert any faster or am I bottlenecked?? |
Answer» I have been using Fraps to capture video game footage and then use VirtualDub to make a 10GB project into a 200MB video for youtube. As officer of our World of Warcraft Guild, one of my responsibilities is to use my more powerful than most others systems computer to capture the events such as raids, and share mainly with the guild members through youtube as a convenient free video sharing service, so that those who want to look back at the gameplay for laughs, curiosity into others actions at certain parts of the battle etc, or see what they missed out on and view a weekly raid that they were not able to participate in, but can chat with others after the fact about it as a spectator to the run. The two hard drives keeps the bottleneck low (read from one, write to another). I'm sure you could get by with just one hard drive though. * was just thinking I have a 90GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD in this system that I use primarily for gaming, I could uninstall/reinstall one of my lesser played games to the regular 500GB hard drive and have about 40GB free and redirect FRAPS to populate the SSD instead of the spinning HDD. I think the SSD would take the read/write abuse far better than the spinning HDD. Just not sure if I want to write the finished product to the SSD or to the HDD, I am thinking that for speed it probably would make sense to write the finished product to the spinning HDD vs the SSD as for it might process faster not reading and writing to a single drive. But yet the SSD is much faster than the HDD, so it might actually be faster to have it all process on the SSD instead..LOL Regarding that software Xilisoft Video Converter and its ability to tap into the GPU cores to process vs just the CPU is very tempting. My video card is not super powerful, but CPU + GPU processing vs just the CPU taking the burden on the load should make some difference even if I am just using a AMD Radeon 5450HD with 1GB DDR3. Going to have to look up the Radeon 5450HD GPU now to see its stats for cores etc. Prior to this card I was using a GeForce 8400GS with 512MB RAM that claimed to have 16 cuda cores. This Radeon 5450HD performs way better and might assist the Athlon II x4 2.6Ghz that I using with Xilisoft.http://www.xilisoft.com/video-converter/video-converter-comparison.html Impressive software ... good deal going on until 4/20 $20 off + if I share this on FB I get an additional $10 off of the $20 for $30 off. Looks like I can get by just fine with the Standard Edition, however the extra features for editing are tempting as well even though I currently do not edit the videos, they are currently just posted exactly as recorded and converted. I think I am going to use these offers to get Ultimate at 50% off normal price for just $30 vs $60. My Radeon HD 5450 has 80 stream cores, not sure if thats going to make a big difference or not, but maybe will help the CPU out some if needed. The VirtualDub was only running the CPU around 30% so I am thinking that this process is nothing for the quadcore, although maybe if I used the SSD instead the CPU will come to life with more activity not waiting on read/write data latency to process its next conversion instruction. As well as maybe Xilisoft will make better use of the hardware to crunch this out faster, even though I SUSPECT the slowness is due to excessive drive activity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon_HD_5000_Series Carbon Dudeoxide Thanks for your help with this No problem! Glad to help. I bought the standard version. I didn't need the other features advertised in the more expensive versions. |

Solve : Drive Copy 12 Professional - Anyone used this yet?? |
Answer» This statement of "No matter the source or target", it will transfer and work seems amazing if it works as stated. In the past when someone performed a hard drive install to new hardware, I would have to assist them through a repair installation, especially if there was a great difference between processors such as one client who had an old 800Mhz AMD Athlon and the SYSTEM died due to hardware ( motherboard ) failure and he wanted everything to be back just the way it was and he had a Pentium 4 computer available to become what the old computer once was and so I assisted him in getting his computer back up and running with newer FASTER GUTS with same OS and software without having to reinstall and reconfigure all software of which some software the installation discs were no where to be found and the software packages were like $1000 to replace. |

Solve : MSSE scheduled scan erratic? |
Answer» I have Windows XP SP3 32-bit system - with MS Security Essentials scheduled scan set for 4.00 every day, yet often when I start, the MSSE icon warns me that my pc is potentially unprotected because a scan hasn't been run for some time, and I have to manually initiate a scan. The only other security programs I have are Windows Firewall and Malwarebytes (free VERSION), which I BELIEVE is compatible. The pc is switched off at the time of the scan. If the computer is off at the scheduled scan time, the scan does not take place. Change your scan schedule to a time when you know your computer will be running or do it manually.Yeah, I was waiting to hear if that's in fact the case - but thanks Thanks for replies - When I said "switched off" I meant that the pc was turned off, as usual, at the end of a user session, not disconnected from the power supply. There is what I have always taken to be a standby light on the monitor and that is on all the time. ALSO the router connection to the internet seems to be working away whether the pc is on or off. I always thought that was to get updates and amendments at these " out of hours" times. Am I wrong about this? Quote There is what I have always taken to be a standby light on the monitor and that is on all the time. Also the router connection to the internet seems to be working away whether the pc is on or off. I always thought that was to get updates and amendments at these " out of hours" times. Am I wrong about this? The monitor has nothing to do with the state of your computer. When your computer is shut down (powered off) nothing is taking place.Right. Still no idea if you are powering down or going to sleep or hibernation or what. Please explain. At the end of a session I click "start" - "turn off computer" - "turn off" - then get "Windows is closing down", etc.. I thought that connection to the internet was maintained in this "off" state. What I'm really querying here is why the program gives an update time option if it can only be DONE when the pc is on and, presumably, being used. You're turning off the computer. NOTHING is going to run when the computer is off.OK. Thanks again for interest and replies. |

Solve : Weird Problem with Java - Sometimes Working, Sometimes Not? |

Answer» Hello, What happens on this? He stated that works above...Quote from: patio on April 06, 2013, 08:06:31 AM He stated that works above...Yeah, that shows.Disable any AdBlockers.Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 06, 2013, 10:29:51 AM Disable any AdBlockers.Didn't work.Quote from: flatline on April 06, 2013, 11:55:32 AM Didn't work. well here's my original, full post on it. Basically, I couldn't get the mibbit widget to show up either, until I disabled ad block. When I finished writing the post I decided to summarize it. Another thing to give a go; I created a simple HTML page with some embedded javascript, which shows a simple alert. if that works, then Javascript is working. if not, then it's not. Quote from: flatline on April 05, 2013, 10:50:16 PM Then I went to load up a couple of websites that run on Java (after I had installed it) and they won't load. I haven't seen a website run on Java since the 90's. I'm not even sure they exist anymore. Most websites use Javascript, but that's completely unrelated. Quote For an entire website on javascript (like a web irc client (gamesurge)), the page was just an eternal white screen.Yes. That site uses the Mibbit IRC Web Client, which is mostly Javascript. I can't seem to get their widget (the one on the gamesurge site) to work at all; I get a black box in all my browsers. the mibbit widget itself works fine in all my browsers. Seems like a configuration issue. I'd follow the link at the bottom to use their Java-based Chat, but I have Java disabled in all my browsers as any sane individual aware that there is no advantage to having it but a multitude of problems with it ought to. Quote I've tried every version of Java for Windows I could think of.gamesurge uses the mibbit client which is Javascript, not Java. It works fine here. However, I did experiment, and discovered that if I installed AdBlock- which is particularly popular and it's possible you've installed it- that the site simply shows a black screen in the frame; same for the mibbit widget itself when I use it manually. If you have AdBlock, disable it for the site. You might need to disable it for Mibbit as well. Quote The main example is GameSurge webchat (which i use for comp video game in-house pugs and stuff), but other things won't work either. It's pretty random and weird. This is somewhat consistent with if you have AdBlock installed. Sometimes it seems to think core website functionality Scripts and widgets are ads and blocks them. Quote It's weird, because things like Minecraft run fine (although I know that Java and Javascript are two different things). As you say these are completely unrelated. Quote I just hope I can find a solution; I really don't want to go back to Win 8 just for Javanothing you've mentioned uses Java. Quote I can't get any javascript console output, it's almost like it's not running Java but it kind of is...it's hard to explain. This is consistent with my results when I enabled AdBlock. Quote Recently, I've been getting even more variation in things in Java working or not working: for example, the official java test on oracle works, and so does isjavascriptenabled, but java-based chat rooms still don't work...it's really weird.Despite your previous note you don't appear to be aware of the difference between Javascript and Java. Not that this is your fault. The fact that they have such similar names is downright ridiculous and the person that decided to call a Scripting Language that had nothing to do with Java should be shot. He is nothing but a menace to SOCIETY! Anyway, the official java test on oracle works because you have the Java plugin installed. As a side note, I highly suggest removing that piece of garbage from your browsers. The Java plugin is pointless and just a giant security incident waiting to happen. the javascript tests are consistent with my current working theory about adBlock. Anyway, if disabling adBlock didn't work, see if that page shows an alert.Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 06, 2013, 04:17:58 PM WALL OF WORDSAh. :v try http://webchat.gamesurge.net , that's what I'm mostly having problems with. Solve : Question regarding VirtualDub? |
Answer» A few times a week a group of us gamers get together for gaming and I record the events using my licensed copy of FRAPS. After the event is over with I have recorded the multiplayer gameplay in a file that is anywheres from 20GB to 50GB in size. I have been compressing these recorded gameplays to AVI files using VirtualDub which does a great job of making a 20GB uncompressed video recording at 30fps size compressed down to around 800MB without loss of noticable quality. I then post them on youtube for the group to view the gameplay and point out what can be done better next time etc. Never heard of Ffmpeg ... I tried using a tool named Handbrake ffmpeg is the premier command line video transcoding and processing app. There are many "video converter" GUI programs out there, which are just GUI font ends for ffmpeg, and Handbrake is one of these. I would not blame the audio/video sync problems on ffmpeg or Handbrake though. http://www.ffmpeg.org/ Windows builds of ffmpeg http://ffmpeg.zeranoe.com/builds/ Some ffmpeg front ends Avanti http://avanti.arrozcru.com/ ffmpeg GUI http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffmpeg-gui/ A lot of people say nice things about WinFF http://winff.org/html_new/ Some paid-for "video converter" apps are just front ends fpr ffmpeg, in violation of the GPL Also I would take a look at Avisynth http://avisynth.nl/index.php/Main_Page Quote I would not blame the audio/video sync problems on ffmpeg or Handbrake though. When Format Factory, Virtual Dub, and Fraps seem to have no problems with keeping everything in sync between audio and video, but yet Handbrake does have issues when tried on 2 computers one of them a powerful quadcore and the other an ok processing power dual-core, I did away with handbrake and kept with Format Factory. Maybe there is an option in Handbrake to correct for the mismatched timing, but I took it as a poor quality product to lose sync as for I would expect the audio and video streams to have some sort of numeration to match the audio and video sync, and seeing no flaws with Format Factory, I kept with that instead of trying to fix a problem with Handbrake which to me should work at the get go without special configuration to get the timing sync'ed between audio and video. With Handbrake did you have to make any changes to get the timing correct or were you lucky that due to some sort of hardware difference such as a lack of lag or a lack of one stream being faster than the other when recorded you lucked out with perfect timing? *The only difference I may have in my systems from yours is that I have both a SSD and HDD in both systems I attempted to use Handbrake with and maybe the mixture of a SSD in the works caused a mismatch in the data write process etc ( writing to drive too quickly etc )... for a short while I was using my SSD for swap space which had its advantages in performance, but I later pointed the swap space back to the HDD because I read that it can wear out the cells in SSD's prematurely. But anyways not that important to try to fix Handbrake for my systems as for Format Factory is working flawlessly for my occasional need to make one of my owned DVD movies into a WMV for something to watch when stuck on a lengthy plane flight and nothing but the 2 people on either side of you flighting for the shared arm rest and the seat back ahead of you to stare at and no leg room when you are 6ft 2inches tall, with the person ahead of you that wants to put there seat back and you are intentionally pressing with your knees against the seat back so that they fight with it, and it doesnt go back, and they finally give up..... I guess you can tell that I hate flying cheap corporate purchased tickets from that last line. But at least I found a way to try to get some room on the flights by flying southwest so that I might get lucky and get an exit row for some room and a window seat to have 1 arm rest to myself..LOL And if your flying and try to put your seat back and it doesn't go back I might be sitting behind you. Quote Some paid-for "video converter" apps are just front ends fpr ffmpeg, in violation of the GPL Yah similar situation... I fell for a piece of software I found on the web once for $18 called Website Downloader or something like that, and later found out that someone basically took the open source and made a few changes to rename it and remove credit to the original project, so someone got $18 out of me. The software source is HTTrack available FREE on the web, but I didnt find the original free at the time and paid the $18 for a knock off of the same project. I got this when I was looking for a way to make offline copies of price guides that are free info on the web to have on a laptap offline when going to auctions and shows to basically download a copy of a sites latest up to date pricing and then go to the show loaded with info on latest market info and use that as a guide for what is hot and what is not for anything that I may not already know the value of by memory. Still going to check out ffmpeg though, as for that may be a useful utility I mainly use Handbrake as a convenient front end to ffmpeg to rip DVDs that I own (natch!) to mkv files so that I can put them on my NAS box and stream them over the home network to the TV using the DLNA server on the NAS. I have never had a problem with audio/video sync doing this. I have done it on a 3 Ghz Pentium 4 desktop and a core 2 Duo laptop as well as my AMD quad core desktop. I sometimes make Handbrake write the output mkv file to a network share. I used to also use ffmpeg from the command line to turn flv and mp4 videos into something my old DVD player could play from its USB port (xvid mainly) and I never had a problem there either. I would REMEMBER that any video transcoding application, whether it is a GUI or command line, or a hybrid, is just a man in the middle between the input codec that reads the source video and the compression codec that produces the output video stream. To a certain extent it will make choices of codec settings for you. Also I would recall that Handbrake is freeware produced by a one-man outfit as far as I know. I do know that with Handbrake you can actually drill down and see the command line it creates for ffmpeg (Show Queue>Queue>Generate Batch Script). I do recall that I used to get audio/video mismatches on material I had transcoded with Virtualdub, but oddly they would play fine on a PC but not on my DVD player via USB. I fixed it by not using VBR (variable bit rate) mp3 as the audio compression in Vdub. I either used a fixed rate mp3 setting or else PCM which gives bigger final file size. I expect you can fool around with ffmpeg settings in a similar way. But the bottom line is, like you, if I find a solution that works out of the box and just does what I want without any fuss, I stick with that. Quote from: DaveLembke on October 24, 2013, 04:13:19 PM Still going to check out ffmpeg though, as for that may be a useful utility I see that the ffmpeg project seems to have split or done something like that, because you now have a thing called x264 as well but they both seem to share the same documentation. |

Solve : Moving To A New Laptop? |
Answer» About a year and a half ago a purchased "PCmover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant", and used it when going from Win XP to Win 7 in my computer, successfully. Without doing a Repair Install the old HDD probably wouldn't boot in the new laptop...unless they are close to identical... When I built my desktop, I simply moved my laptop's hard drive to the desktop. Works fine. ...Yes, my desktop's primary hard drive is a 2.5" laptop HD. I'm pretty suprised at that result for the fact that since XP the Windows install is tied directly to the PC that it was originally installed on... I've gotten lucky once or twice doing so but i certainly wouldn't state that it is normal behaviour...most PC's won't even boot to Windows when doing this in my experience. You can take a hard drive from one system and put it in another as a second drive, but you certainly can't take a system drive from one system, put it in a different system, and expect it to boot without doing either a repair install or a new install. I have a feeling we're not talking about exactly the same thing here. You might get lucky moving a system disk to another PC, ESPECIALLY if the hardware is a reasonable match (close or identical motherboard or PC model) but on a domestic system even if it booted you would run into activation issues. Of course a business with a volume license DEPLOYING cloned images would do it a certain way to stay license compliant.I haven't run into any of these issues, but I've only done it once. I have nothing else to compare to.Hence my comments above.... Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on April 07, 2013, 09:29:43 AM I haven't run into any of these issues, but I've only done it once. This issue here, to be perfectly clear, is device drivers. All the drivers for a PARTICULAR computer are part of the recovery partition or DVD tied the EXACT hardware COMPONENTS of that computer. Obviously, if you simply transfer a hard drive from one computer to another and that receiving computer is not identical to the source computer, you'll likely to encounter problems. In your case, either the two computers were quite similar or perhaps Windows found drivers for certain components without you being aware of it. If that was the case, those drivers may not be the best drivers for optimum performance or functionality. Solve : Access 2010 file size problem? |
Answer» I have a database using MS Access 2010. I've recently POPULATED it with data giving a file size of 800 MB. I have another equivalent database populated with data from a colleague and it has a file size of 700 MB. Merging the two files results in an error because Access 2010 has a maximum file size of 2 GB. Microsoft SAY you can work around this problem by using a "link" to the second database. I did this and the file size is 1500 MB. In each CASE I have done a "compact & repair". |
