Solve : MS Word and WordPerfect Email?

Answer»

Hi

I am using MS word and I would like to be able to attach the documents that I have typed to go straight to WordPerfect Email. Isn't possible to do that. I don't have Outlook. In my office, i am able to do that as MSWORD is linked to Outlook.

In MS Word 2007 one should be able to fax or send the document. Right now the "email" part is not highlighted.

thanksQuote from: robin2006 on SEPTEMBER 01, 2008, 09:32:15 AM

That doesn't make sense. You have a Word document, so that's what you're sending. If that's what you send, then that's what the recipient will receive. There's no magical conversion from Word to WordPerfect while the file is traveling through the email channel.

And, what exactly do you mean by "WordPerfect Email"? WordPerfect is word processing software, not an email client.

I gather you're talking about two different environments from which you work. One is an office and one is home or somewhere else. Is that correct? In one place, you have Outlook; in the other, you don't. Is that correct? If so, what email client do you use in the latter place? Do you use Outlook Express or Windows Mail or some other email program installed on your computer, or do you use webmail?
hi

sorry for the confusion.. at home I am using the Microsoft Word processing program and I am just wondering if there is any possiblity of linking this program to my default email that is WordPerfect Email. I don't have the Outlook or Express email at home ..only WordPerfect Email that comes with the computer when I bought it. I don't think it is possible..as they are two different environment..i am just curious....

When you look at the 2007 Microsoft word processing program...when you create a document ..you can send it by email or by fax ..just by clicking on it...now the part SEND by EMAIL is not highlighted

At work I have MS word and Outlook email....when i create a document and save it and when i click "send by email"...it will bring me straight to Outlook program and the document is attached....

thanks OK, I believe I now know you're talking about WordPerfect Mail, which I've never heard of.

You do have Outlook Express. It's part of all Windows computers. If you don't see it, you may need to "install" it. Are you using Windows XP or Vista?

Other free options for email are available. This includes Thunderbird, and Windows Live Mail.

Where is the "SEND by EMAIL" feature in Word 2007? I have Word 2007 and I don't see that. To send a Word 2007 file, with the file open, I would click the Office icon in the upper left corner of the Word window, then select Send, the select E-mail. Hi

my computer is running the Vista Home PREMIUM....therefore no Outlook...Yes when the document is open and I want to send it by email...i could do it by clicking the send by email or send by fax...neither works as I don't have a fax provider and the email section is "blocked" ...that is you are not able to click it at all...I am just curious to see if I can link the MS word program to WordPerfect Email...and get that blocked section (i.e. send by email) unblocked....hI

my problem is solved...thanksQuote from: robin2006 on September 01, 2008, 05:38:19 PM

Right, but you have Windows Mail. It's on all Windows Vista systems.

Solve : Outlook 2000 Removing strikethrough font from completed items folder??

Answer»

Outlook 2000 Removing strikethrough font from completed items folder?
It's a piddley little thing I know... but when I'm trying to PAT myself on the back for all that I've accomplished I have to strain to see through the strikethrough line which is placed (by default) over everyword. I'd like to see this list as I see other lists - legible.
I can modify fonts in other folders... anyway that you know of to change it in the preset completed folder? It automatically does that when you delete emails when using IMAP not a POP email but it still keeps the items.

Do you want to compltely delete all the stikethrough emails? If you do, click on the folder you want to delete the messages from and go to the edit menu and click purge deleted emails.

Ask if you need help

Source: googleI haven't used the Tasks feature much and my version of Office is 2003. If I mark a task in, say, the Detailed List folder as completed, it appears in that folder with a strikethrough but also then appears in the Completed Tasks folder without a strikethrough. But, you're SAYING Outlook 2000 shows a strikethrough in the Completed Tasks folder. Right? In that case, we have a difference here between the two VERSIONS.

I've searched Outlook 2003 for a way to change the format of completed items but have not FOUND any solution. Now, I can't say with absolute certainty that such an option is not available somewhere but I can't find it. Sorry I can't be more helpful on this. Thanks for you rhelp but I figured it out.
I was not seeing smething right infront of me - usually the case.

in custom view I needed to open "advanced formatting" and select the "rules for this view" (of the items Iwill be seeing - in this case it's completed and read tasks.)
then I can change away.

Sometimes you have to walk away from a thing, go make mad passionate love to your wife, eat some Pad Tai, and come back to it with fresh eyes before you'll see the simple things.
Thanks, George.

Solve : How do I change cell colors for more than 3 conditions in Excel??

Answer»

Hi,

I am running Windows XP SP2, ALONG with Microsoft Excel 2003.
I am working a project that requires me to create a list. The choices in the list need the background color of the cell to CHANGE, based on a condition. I know about conditional formatting, but that only works for 3 conditions. I have 4 conditions that need to be met, so conditional formatting won't work.

So for instance, I have a drop down menu with the words Full, Half Full, Half Empty, Almost Empty, and Empty. I need Full = green, half full = yellow, half empty = orange, almost empty = red.

Can I do this with an "if" formula in excel, or is there an easier way to this?

All help is appreciated.

ThanksDo you have to have Half Full and Halfe Empty as they are TECHNICALLY the same?I'm using them as an example. So yes I do need them, but I'm just GIVING them as an example, so people could better understand the situation.

Well, this is my preference. Also 100% FREE.

Avira AV-with firewall disabled, but use;
Comodo Firewall for firewall
Win Patrol
ThreatfireAlso free: a) real time protection: 1) Avast! (AV and anti-Spyware), 2) Spyware Terminator, 3) SpyWareBlaster (actually, passive); b) on demand: 1) Spybot, 2) SUPERAntiSpyware, 3) Windows Defender (wants to run real time but I usually use it on demand).

Best of luck.I like to use ViRobot. It's not free, but it does take cares of spyware and viruses.

Solve : help!!! three operating systems!!?

ok im using a windows xp when i got another windows xp cd cause i wanted to reinstall windows but i lost my FIRST one. so i installed the disk and now i have TWO windows xps on my C: drive. and then i accidentally installed it again but now on my E: drive. so how do i remove the ONES on my C: drive and put my xp from the E: drive to C: drive? please help....OH yeah and when i boot i have to choose between three windows xps.i tried to delete the partition in the C: drive using the disk manager but i get a message: windows cannot delete active system partition..BLAHBLAH...HELP PLEASE Quote from: juleshaha on September 01, 2008, 06:12:15 AM

and then i accidentally installed it again

Heh, you accidentally installed Windows?

The reason you have to choose which Windows to use is because your Boot.ini file can see 3 seperate installations of it. Or more to the point, a new OS has been added to the boot.ini file when it's been installed.

Personally, I would think about formatting the hard drive/partitions and doing a clean install. Do you have any crucial files or documents on the system at the moment? if so, back these up if they are not already.

As for the installation on your E: Drive, if this is just a partition used for data/storage, then you can just delete the folders in this partition which is for the OS (Windows, Documents and Settings etc.) and make sure you have your personal files somewhere in this partition not within these directories.

Solve : Powershot camera, screen resolution conflict?

Answer»

Today's my 20th birthday, and as a gift my parents got me my first "real" digital camera a powershot A590 IS. The problem I'm having is that my computer is an old gateway solo 5300 running windows XP 8gb of memory there's a conflict somewhere from when it was updated from windows 98 that doesn't allow me to change the screen resolution from the lowest possible resolution, but the software CD that comes with my new camera requires at least 1024x for the software to even install, if I wanted this camera only for still pictures that wouldn't be an issue, but the fact is one of the greatest features is that it also takes video! This is the first time in my life I've been able to take video and I actually need to send a video to a dog behavorist because I'm dealing with some pretty serious stuff which is why I was over the moon about having this camera but because of the conflict I can't download or even view the video on the camera, except on the camera. What I'm looking for is a software, or suggestion on how I can use my computer and figure out a back door so I don't have to use Canon's software, or so I can use it anyways. I've already been round-about with Gateway and microsoph several months ago about the screen resolution thing and gave up after several WEEKS. I already called tech support and tho my computer fits the tech requirements in every other way but screen resolution they refused to help me other than "go buy a new computer" which isn't an option for me. Thanks.DLoad and update and install your video drivers,,,

That's a laptop computer, right? You have a marginal system there for running Win XP. You only have 128MB of RAM and 8MB of video memory. You'd notice a big improvement in performance if you could add more memory. I'd also access the BIOS and see whether you can increase the amount of memory allocated to your video/display adapter. If you increase it, try going up to the next step, which might be 16MB, and see whether that allows you to set your screen resolution to 1024 x 768.

re: your software question, take a look at something Windows XP already has, called Windows Movie Maker, and see whether it WOULD let you view the videos from your camera. Windows Media Player might be another option.thanks, checking bios stuff scares the living daylights outta me but I managed but it didn't help.

The problem is that my laptop recognises that what's on the camera are video files, but they've got a "." extension. On the disk that came with the computer I can access several different files including what I THINK are driver files but I don't know how helpful they might be, I tried windows media and movie maker and neither were able to do anything with the video but I was wondering if I downloaded the drivers on the disk if that would help? I'm way over my head here, sorry if that doesn't make sense.

Solve : Corrupt Floppy?

I have a corrupt floppy that has extremely important info. on it that I can't get any program i.e. filesee,BAD COPY ETC. to read it, does anyone have a suggestion on how to recover a file, I simply need to get a five digit code off it and then I can trash it.What happens, when you try read the floppy?Try it in as many different floppy drives as you have access to...I am running it on my XP Pro Desktop, I was able to recover some of the file but it is basically unreadable, depending on how I choose to try to read I get, "Disk is not formatted, you need to format before using" or General error "Unable to read" and sometimes nothing at all. I have about 10 drives(Floppy) and I have tried the majority. I have also tried reading it in CMD prompt(Dos).Check, if Recuva: http://www.recuva.com/ can find something.A data recovery service may be your LAST RESORT...Carefull the tech cops don`t get you for still using floppys. Solve : Sending files to Flash Drive?

Answer»

How can I add my flash drive designation to the send to menu? My A floppy is the only one there.Using WIN98SE. I am open to correction here but not sure 98 will ''see'' this in the send-to options.

Anyways - I'd suggest that if you can ID your flash drive in win explorer or my computer, then EITHER rightclick ''copy'' files to copy stuff (or cut to move) from original source, and then rightclick ''paste'' into the flash drive. Drag and drop should work too.

A reminder THO probably not needed ... from keyboard - ctrl+c = copy, ctrl+v = paste and ctrl+x = cut.

Also re drag and drop - if working in same drive default is ''move'' - if drive to drive default is ''copy''. Use of CTRL key can be used as needed to reverse either of these.http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article05-404

Good luck!Tried the annoyances.org article first and it worked as far as adding to the menu.
Haven't had the chance to use it yet. Thanks againYou're welcome I have picked this thread up and followed it with much interest because I, too, am interested in adding an option yo my "send to" folder. . can you really do that with that old version of nero?

if u can do that why cant i do that with nero 8?

i have always burnt 15 songs on a cd...

or is it possible to do that anyway?

wouldnt that be great if you could burn more than 50 songs on a cd...

If the songs were compressed they might fit on it, but I've never heard of that many songs fitting on a normal CD-R.700mb CD

Okay, you got me.... MP3's use of a lossy compression algorithm is designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent the audio recording and still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio for most listeners. That`s why you can fit more than 100 songs on a 700mb cd.
Most I have fitted 127Quote from: itsme21u on September 05, 2008, 01:51:10 PM

Yep, another thing is that MP3 files aren't always s5mb like in my calculations.Especially, if you want better quality than 128 bit.

Solve : Problems with Nero?

Answer»

When using Nero to make a compilation CD the tracks I use from my hard drive play fine, but the tracks I have pulled from CDs (both purchased & copied) play as a quite rapid (every half second or so) series of clicks. The pitch of the clicks varies from track to track.
Haven't burnt a CD for a while prior to this, but never had the problem (which arises from both CD & DVD drives) before.
If anyone can help please couch advice in as simple terms as possible.

thanks in anticipationHow are you playing them?

What Operating System?I'm using Windows XP & playing the CDs on a Sony CD-RW CRX230ED.Can you try the CD on another computer?

If the other computer has trouble with it as well, try burning the songs on another CD and see if it sounds BETTER (maybe the cd is damaged)CDs play fine on my CD player.
This will seem strange, but because I HAD to burn a CD, I GOT the tracks in question onto my hard drive via the Sony CD-RW and Sony's Sonic Stage software (as MP3 files). Nero then burnt a playable standard CD of them. Obviously I'd prefer not to have to go through that palaver every time!

Have just tried again with a CD which plays fine. Nero appears to "add" the tracks to the "my audio CD" window, but when I press "play" on the same window it comes out as clicks like the CD did. What about if you play them with Windows Media Player?Or VLC Player...What version of Nero are you using?I'm using Nero 6 & I'm convinced problem is with that, not the CDs I'm trying to rip fromHave you visited the site for updates to your software?

Go here: Nero 6 Update

You'll have to REGISTER...if you haven't already.I never used Nero for this same reason. Never believed it could be a good program. I have started to use Nero 6 ultra a short while back and must say the have ironed out some of here known problems with Microsoft Windows.

Have you tried burning with Microsoft media player?
PERHAPS a re install of Nero or a newer version will do the TRICK. One question. Where did you get the Nero software? Was it part of the cd-dvd package or not?Quote from: itsme21u on September 06, 2008, 11:49:35 AM

First of all...did you read the previous posts? Other media players were already suggested...including Windows Media player.

Let's see if the updates help, first. I'm convinced it is the software, as well. But his issue is with Nero 6. So, let's try to fix Nero 6...shall we?

Solve : Excel and auto insert cells?

Answer»

Hi All,
I have a spreadsheet that has a group of cells. We call them a quality rating. Once a week on Fridays we fill in the cell information to the left and if the user had an error we put them in the small boxes. This changes the 100% rating on the left side of the PAGE. We then copy the 5 far right cells and over write or shift them one cell to the left to open up a empty cell on the far right. In that cell we copy the new data so we always have a display of 6 weeks on each user's QC rating.

I hope that this makes since. I am going to add a screenshot to help show what I am trying to explan.

My goal is to MAKE it so what I type in the totals for a user on the left a set of cells can auto insert the cells and add the data on the right side of the SHEET I just typed. I was thinking about trying a MACRO but I would like to know if anyone could do this any cleaner.

Thanks

Solve : Using REAPER as a guitar amp?

Hello, I just received my electric guitar not too long ago, and I was hoping to use my computer as an amp due to the shortage of money at the moment. I have everything I need, and have gotten it to work a few times, but was WONDERING on how to get VST plugins to output SOUND when I play. I'm also having trouble playing while on Skype vise versa. I'm no sure what is causing this, I have my microphone headset set as my default communication device and my line-in set as my default device. (anything else will cancel one or both out).

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on a machine with 8 GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM, 2 TB 7200 RPM Seagate Hard Drive, NVIDIA GTX 560 2GB GDDR5 Graphics Card, AMD Phenom II X4 3.7GHz Processor. You cant run Skype and an audio app at the same time that i'm aware of...

Solve : Problems with Java SE Development Installation?

Answer»

Hi
I'm having problems installing Java SE Development Kit [JDK7 SE]. I've downloaded it successfully. When I double CLICK on it to install it, a new window open and ask if I want to run the file. I click OK and NOTHING happens. I have Java Run Environment 7 [JRE 7] installed but want the Java Development Kit 7 for PROGRAMMING. I am also unable to remove the Java Run Environment 7 by Add/Remove Program FEATURE [I thought if I uninstall this that I would be able to install the JDK7 SE]. My operating system is Windows XP Professional and there is enough free disk space for file.

I was able to install JD7 with Netbeans but my class uses JDK 7 SE Development Kit.

Thanks much for any suggestions.

Solve : Unableto import video to camtasia Iget error message cannot load file no decoder?

The video FORMAT I am trying to upload is avi, I even converted it to, FLV and still got same error message. I am running windows XP on my PC.
I even downloaded video codec from Camtasia and did not help. I am using 30 day free trial for SOFTWARE. Windows Media Player, WMP, is the problem.
Thee are many free video converters. One oldie is Format Factory

Solve : subscore & base scores?

Answer»

I trust this is the right forum.....??
In checking AROUND the 'inner workings' of my pc, I found this :
Rate and improve computer performance

Subscore & base score were both 3.2

Explain, please, & is this a good thing? If, not, should something be fixed ? The Windows Performance Index gives a subscore from 1.0 to 7.9 to various aspects of your computer:

PROCESSOR calculations per second
RAM speed
Graphics performance (desktop, Windows Aero)
Gaming graphics
Primary hard disk

The base score is the same as the lowest subscore.

You didn't say what your subscores were.
This machine I am on now, I bought in 2010 - 3 GHZ AMD quad core Phenom II, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8200 onboard video, scores 7.6 for the processor, and 5.9 each for the disk and RAM, 4.9 for gaming graphics, and 3.4 for desktop performance. These last two are low because of the relatively low performance of the onboard video. I have not added a display card. I am not interested in gaming anyhow. Thus my overall score is 3.4. Do I care? NO.

If your computer is performing OK, then you don't need to do anything. Just ignore the performance FIGURES. Most people do.

Solve : Running Windows from a Disk??

Answer»

I seen this done today. So I was wondering how it was achieved as it looks to be a very handy tool if it's even legal. I'm not entirely sure.

Anyway, I seen this done recently and was wondering how to get Windows to RUN (limited features I assume) off of a CD. I believe it was XP, but he was saying it allocated part of the RAM as "HD space" and he got the person's information off of the HD that needed saving just in case the hard-drive was bad (pictures, etc) b/c it wasn't booting or recognizing windows at all on start-up. Something was ULTIMATELY wrong with the master boot record and it got fixed in the end.

But how was this achieved? I would like to know as this could be a handy tool to have.Part of Windows is called PE. This is the environment just before the full system is installed. Microsoft lets a legal used build it for aid in installation.

For further reading. look over articles about Bert's PE CD.
He was one of the first, if not the first, to show how to build a useable windows system without a full install. Of course, you must have a legal XP CD to build it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BartPE

http://barts-pe-builder.en.softonic.com/

Also, a similar CD can be made fro Linux, but it is not the same thing.

More questions?
I have done some research into this; PE disks such as BartPE and OTHERS can be of doubtful LEGALITY. The process involves extracting copyright Microsoft files from an install DISK which would seem to be against the Microsoft EULA. Downloading complete ready made BartPE or similar disks is definitely in breach not only of Microsoft copyright but also relating to the other files they contain. Some people say that if you have a LICENSED copy of Windows in the form of an install disk you can use it as a source of the files needed to build a PE environment to use on the licensed machine(s); others disagree. I believe this forum may need to be careful what is shown about this.It is a grey area so i'm locking this...

P.S. It's painfully slow running it that way anyways.

Solve : Recovering deleted data..... Norton Ghost??

Answer»

So... Somebody I know had a computer with 2 hard drives, an OS drive (dual boot XP and Ubuntu) and a data drive. They went to do a reinstall of the OSes but they accidentally INSTALLED the OS over top all their data!

What software could recover the information from that drive? Could Norton Ghost 15 do it?Not unless they created an image with Ghost and want to restore it.

You can try recuva (http://www.piriform.com/recuva), but if the data has been overwritten most, if not all of it will be unrecoverable. There are companies who do this for a living, but they are very expensive.Quote from: Allan on February 08, 2013, 05:46:18 AM

Okay, they did not have a Norton Ghost backup image.

Well, they reinstalled an OS over it all so I'm not terribly hopeful. So the only real way to get their data back is to take it to a professional then? There is a tool CALLED GetDataBack NTFS which is FREE to try to see if it detects needed files, but have to buy to transfer found files to an alternate location to perform recovery. I haven't tried it on a drive that has been potentially completely overwritten, but if it works its far cheaper than a data recovery center. I bought this GetDataBack NTFS software as a bundle package with Getdataback FAT and GetDataBack RAID for like $80 about 5 years ago. It has been successful for getting most of the data off of crashed hard drives that still spin. Even had a laptop hard drive with the continuous clunk of death able to recover more than 80% of the data off of, however it had to run on this drive continuously clunking for 5 DAYS on a 13GB IDE laptop drive.Quote from: Allan on February 08, 2013, 05:46:18 AM

Does anyone have a clue what software professionals would use to recover the data?Very expensive, very proprietary software.Quote from: Allan on February 14, 2013, 05:31:09 AM

Solve : No Photos?

Answer»

Windows Vista, Home Premium.
PC seems to work EXCEPT all photos in Pictures disappeared except one which is also on my desk top.
I found the photos at Start- click on Computer -click on local drive C and on the menu that appears select All pictures. Could not burn the photos because it could not be "Read"

Also at start up I saw message "Could not load or run C:\ users\app data \local\temp\(09269~I. EXE'
specified in the registry. Make shure the file exist on your computer or remove the reference to it in the Registry.
System restore does not work either.
Any help will be greatly apreciatedTo use a very technical term your post and what problem you are trying to resolve is a "titch" unclear. What are these pictures? Have you ever been able to view them? What program created them? What program are you trying to access them with? What program do you normally use for viewing these pictures? Are the pictures named and can you find them via a search function?Answers to those might help us to help you better.truenorth
The Photos were downloaded from my digital camera into the Pictures folder.
In the past to view the Photos > Start > PicturesTry right-clicking one of the pictures and choose Properties. What file type does it shows?Answer : It's JEPG (jpg)
Jason, by the type of your question I can see that maybe I did not properly described the problem. The
photographs were in the Pictures section of Vista for 2 YEARS and when I turned on the PC in the past the photo's were always there. Now I see them on the Hard drive but i can not burn them (to save them) because the photos can not be "Read) When I tried to burn them on CD or DVD and play them on a good PC the disks are blank
but properties for the disks show Megabytes of data on them. YES the issue is changing somewhat as you continue to post. So the original ones that are in the "pictures" folder on the computer harddrive can been viewed? However when you have endeavored to burn them from the pictures location to a burnable cd the resultant cd will not play them for viewing on your computer. Close? This could be caused by failing to instruct the burning program to "finalize the disc on burn completion. Have you ensured that it was finalized?truenorth Yes its finalized before it is ejected. There is more to this, Please read 2nd paragraph of my original posting. I think that is the problem to solve.
Also the manufacturer (eMachines) website recommends to restore PC to original condition using their
System RECOVERY Found on the main Menu. (all programs) I searched all over and "eMachines " can not be found
even when using the search option. In the event that you have done this process before this recent problem and it was successful thus a change has occurred for which you are understandably seeking a solution. You might want to have a look at this site.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-system/windows-cannot-find-cdocume1ownerlocals1tempdwmexe/1e488c2d-4b94-4247-a1dd-d941e1e4000b
If you do all the suggestions contained therein and the results have not improved i would recommend that you post the problem on our CH virus/malware forum. There are some unique experts over there that can help you if it is some form of infection. If you avail yourself of their assistance be thorough on doing as they advise and also be patient. Good luck, truenorthIf you follow eMachines advice all your pics will be gone forever...
The factory restore wipes all data and takes the PC back to Day One status...The problem was solved in the following manner.
1. Scanned PC using Malwerebytes fast scan (full scan did not find the defective file)
2. The Photos were on Drive "C" "All pictures" and I dragged them back to" Pictures"
3. Clicked on each Picture "Properties" and Cleared/Unchecked "Read Only" and "Hidden"

Many thanx to all who helped me Well actually though there was a suggestion that the issue might be infection related. You must accept the credit yourself for persistence in finally solving your problem. Well done, truenorth

Now, I have the impression you were able to register on their forum but simply have not receive a response to your question. Is this CORRECT? If so, it is not what I understood from your first post where you said, "I've registered more than once, tried to connect with the forum, but no luck." So, can you/have you registered on their forum or not? Forums tend to be busy. Sometimes you need to search on their posted or past topics REGARDING to your problem. What email client, i.e. software/program, are you using? Do you have your email account set up as a POP3 mail account in both computers? Is your objective to have the same email messages on both computers? Do you know whether your email service supports IMAP? I will give it a TRY I will let you know if to works tomorrow or on Sunday. What are you going to give a try? IMAP?

Solve : Open Office & Microsoft Office?

Answer»

On my computer I have Student Home and Office from Microsoft, and a week ago I download Open Office to see what it was all about as I had been recommending it to other people who didn't want to fork over "the big bucks" for Microsoft Office. The problem I am having is that if I open a .docx FILE or an .xl file from My Computer, the file will open in Open Office and not in Microsoft. If I open the FILES directly from Word or EXCEL, no problem. How do I keep Open Office from assuming I want to open a Word or Excel file in Open Office? Thank youWhat you want is called:
change file association in Windows 7
Here is one of many links:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-which-programs-Windows-uses-by-default

The above should be all you need.Thank you, Geek After Dark. You pointed me in the right direction and after a few false starts, I was able to make Word and Excel the default programs. I would thank you by clicking on the "Thank you" link, however, for whatever reason, that particular FEATURE no longer shows up on my computer. Well, I can you a than k just for trying.

U.S. Homeland Security Continues Java Warning

Published January 14, 2013
Dow Jones Newswires

So now what? I can not in stall the new Java 13 nor remove Java 11. o now I guess that means ... I dunno, what does it mean? You mean the Java 7 Update 11 and 13?

The warning is blown out of proportion, IMO- the warnings seem to suggest uninstalling Java altogether, which is like suggesting you remove Word altogether to prevent Macro viruses. A lot of the problem with how to respond to the Exploit is that people seem to trust the recommendations of these other associations, who themselves might not even know the details of the exploit itself.

In this case, the issue lies within the "MethodHandle" feature that was introduced with Java 7, which is similar in capability to the ideas of the DLR runtime for .NET Applications, in that it is designed to provide beter support for dynamic languages that run on the JVM and is designed to give more flexible and faster access to classes and methods in a dynamic way. Basically, the feature allows Java code to create a handle for a method from an arbitrary class. The exploit is that the feature to get handles to methods from an arbitrary class can be used to get handles to methods to the classes that get handles to methods of arbitrary classes, but when you call them that way, no security check is performed before the class method is actually called.

What makes the exploit interesting is that if code uses the MethodHandle feature as it is intended, there will not be a security issue- all method handles go through a security check when first RESOLVED- the interesting part is that you can create MethodHandles that refer to classes and methods within the MethodHandles Package itself. (In this sense the vulnerability lies in the java.lang.invoke.MethodHandles.Lookup class). Essentially, it provides a way to lookup the constructor and methods from the target class when it TRIES to make said handle. if the methods handle for the findConstructor method of the MethodHandles Lookup class is used to resolve a constructor method for an arbitrary class, the security check will not be enforced correctly. This is a problem because the target class could be something that is typically restricted and requires a trusted code context- such as File IO or other system-oriented structures. Essentially it allows an application to- if constructed properly- instantiate their own code on the fly in another, more privileged security context.

Of course, this is only an "exploit" when used in CONTEXTS where it would have limited trust anyway. Using it in a standard desktop Java application is pointless since you are basically 'on the other side of the airtight hatchway', and already have the same abilities as you would be trying to get using the Lookup exploit.

It's worth noting also that the Java process that hosts applets generally runs with the same privileges as the browser, which is usually run through the users account. What this means is that software that uses this exploit is still limited in what it can do, but it provides a sort of "hole in the first fence" and essentially escapes the Java sandbox into the Account sandbox provided by the Operating System. This is of course still a major issue but generally speaking, since a Limited User Account cannot actually install low-level system software or access and/or change system components, on Vista,7,8 and Linux and OSX, which run users as a limited account by default, there is a mitigating factor. On a more or less default Windows XP, however, this exploit is devastating. Even more so than using a 12 year old Operating System. (then again, an XP machine can get owned pretty fast anyway thanks to the lack of mitigating security concerns).

Primarily at this point in a active exploit, the exploiting Java applet will drop it's payload. Typically, this is a executable program (what language it's written in isn't important, really). It can do this because it's busted out of the sandbox at this point. This program could be a keylogger or something of that sort.

With it's busted-out permissions it can now launch said executable. Of course this is still quite a concern, but most Operating Systems have mitigating factors that help to avoid major, system-wide issues as a result. The exploits in the wild currently rely on a sort of phishing tactic to try to elevate the payload. The fact it get's this far is still something of heavy concern- most people that are exposed to this aren't very security conscious and might not think twice about clicking allow to the Graphical Sudo or UAC prompt that might appear.

Most security packages such as MSE now detect attempts to exploit this vulnerability and are FULLY able to prevent it. often the payload contains some older package that is detected as something else.

Part of me thinks the biggest problem with this exploit is the massive confusion that Netscape prompted with Javascript. Even though Java in the browser through applets has been obsolete since the early 2000's, people still think they need Java installed in their browser- this is because, for a person unfamiliar with the technology, Java and Javascript may as well be the same thing- so you have people thinking Javascript has this exploit and disabling it, while leaving Java enabled, and people installing Java because sites say "this website works best with Javascript enabled", that sort of thing.

The "fix" is to properly enforce security barriers with regards to Method Handle introspecting itself. ORACLE's current stopgap has been to change the default security setting to "high" which also prevents this from being exploited, since MethodHandle's can't be used at all when high security settings are enabled.

Solve : Shift key randomly activating.?

Answer»

Hello, i m not sure this is the right section to post, some may argue its a hardware-related problem.
Anyways, since a few days my shift key is acting oddly, usually getting stuck, somwtimes activating and deactivating randomly. The keyboard itself is fine, i tried both usb and ps2 keyboards, the problem persists. Its not a sticky keys-related issue before anyone jumps at it.
This odd behaviour still persists after unplugging the keyboard: it can be seen through the on screen keyboard. I tried reinstalling my OS as a last resort but im still getting this. Does anyone have a clue?
Any test i can run to help identify the source of this?Assuming this is a desktop computer, I have only seen an issue like this once in the 30 years working on computers, but it wasnt just a shift key. In the system I observed which was a 486SX 25Mhz back in 1996, you could start Windows 3.11 and open up word document and then random ascii would show up keyed. Swapping out keyboard didnt fix this, and clean installation of Windows 3.11 didnt fix this. In the end it was a BAD keyboard controller chip which meant having to replace the motherboard.

But in your case you have only the shift key, and its doing this from both USB and PS2 and different keyboards, and you too have performed clean installation.

Thinking you too might have a motherboard that is having issues, just odd that its only the shift key, and is happening both with PS2 as well as USB, and that you are not getting a keyboard error at post diagnostics which the 486SX 25Mhz sometimes would display.

What is the specs of this computer, make/model? Some computers were built with faulty capacitors that can cause systems to ACT strange, and some models are very common to open and find swollen and LEAKING capacitors.

The pc is an assembled one.
Runs on an alive-xfire esata2 mobo (old motherboard lying around, no actual xfire used, i wouldn't REALLY BOTHER changing it if that was the cause)
Posting the rest of the specs in a dxdiag log, which, by the way, made me note something odd : there are a lot of devices apparently connected to my pc. Lots of (non-existant) keyboards and mice. I wonder if that's the source of my problem.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Sorry for the double post, but i figured deleting the keyboard configuration (?) files in the registry and rebooting the system temporarily fix the problem.
The files are specifically : KeyboardClass0, KeyboardClass1, KeyboardClass2 in the Computer:\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\KeyboardClass directory in the registry.
Though this only fixes my problem for a few hours apparently. How can i work around this?

EDIT: Then again this might just be pure luck, and the files i deleted may have nothing to do with it, it was just the closest thing to a keyboard configuration i could find in the registry.Try starting in Safe Mode, and see if the issue persists.Tried safe mode over a 10 hours sample. Nothing apparently, although it doesn't really have a timer : sometimes it bugs out in 5 minutes, sometimes in 2 hours..
Anyways, since it doesn't seem to do anything in safe mode, it should be some kind of external service messing with it, right?
Should i use some diagnostic program to track what's causing it, and in case, what would you suggest using?QUOTE from: Fermosi on February 09, 2013, 12:26:48 AM

It is a software problem; could be a utility application or another device driver. You could try a tool like Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel or Autoruns, and see if there are unnecessary services and programs you don't need, or try disabling them one by one, rebooting, and seeing if the problem is gone. Obviously that could take some time.Let me get this straight: if i use one of those utilities while the bug is "active", do i HAVE to reboot for the changes to take effect, or the disabled process/service stops functioning immediately?Quote from: Fermosi on February 09, 2013, 05:17:59 AM

You would have to reboot for the changes to take effect, yes. You could end processes via Task Manager as well, I suppose. Though be prepared to reboot if you kill one you need.

Solve : Need Pc pro and fraps help/advice?pls??

Answer»

Hi, recently I got a new PC about 3 months ago, in January I started recording gameplay for YouTube using fraps, now I never really had a problem, Now today I turned on my PC, record one game and start editing, while I am editing my PC started to lag, and then it freezes, I turn it off and on over and over because about every 15 minutes my PC freezes. This is the first time it has happened to me. Now I delete every recording after I have edited cus of the memory so I don't have 100's of gigs of videos.

Now I have been reading about how fraps using all your harddrive and ram and stuff, I am no pro at PC so Idk what that means, something about how its better to get ssd or HDD or external/internal hard drive...I really don't understand.

My PC has 4 gigs of ram, and 900 gigs, Gateway windows 7 , I figured that would be enough. Pls HELP me, I have restored me PC to factory settings but its still to slow and freezes every 15 minutes or if I USE it to fast. If you can explain what's happening and what I can do or what I could buy that would be helpful. Pls if you can keep it simple. I literally saved 3 months of money form this PC. I am taking it to a computer store for a check up but since I don't know much about computers I wouldn't know what to ask or what I need.I'd run memtest86 on this computer to make sure that your ram is healthy. Its free for download and creating a bootable disc or thumb drive.

I own a license of Fraps and while its a really GOOD video cature tool, it is extremely hard drive intensive. The reason behind this is because the data acquired from the video stream can not be compressed on the fly, so it is written to hard drive uncompressed. It also does not take much time to create a 20GB video. Later this video can be encoded in a format such as AVI that is say 700MB in size with some loss of quality, but still good quality for youtube etc.

When using Fraps a lot a while back, I was constantly having to defrag my hard drive as for large files constantly created and deleted was causing fragmentation to happen quickly. I'd check for fragmentation although Win 7 is pretty good at self managing that, but the freezing of the computer etc sounds like a memory issue possibly and not ruling out hard drive issue possibly if the swap space is running into troubles. You can always get the tool from seagate called seatools if the drive is seagate etc and run diagnostics to make sure its healthy.

Fraps can overwork hard drives if you use it a lot and for long periods of time. I haven't cooked any drives yet with it, but the constant solid HD indicator and chatter of the drive while Fraps is recording really shows the excessive HD use needed to perform a direct dump from video to hard drive of captured information and audio.

I own a 90GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD but I havent tried Fraps with it yet. I have owned fraps for about 3 years now but havent used it in about a year. If I have some time tomorrow I will direct fraps to save to my SSD and create a video and SEE how it acts, if its a constant lit HD indicator like the 1TB HDD or blinking which would indicate that the SSD could take more abuse MAYBE in that its faster at handling the information and so the information fead to it is actually bottlenecked in comparison tot he speed of the SSD itself which may be able to handle more requests for read/writesI would also check your computer's temperatures to make sure it isn't overheating.

Stick a house fan next to the computer and see if it lasts longer than 15 minutes.

Solve : Install more than one AV??

Answer»

I use MSE & Malware Bytes & Windows Firewall. Couldn't seem to install Windows Defender for some reason. I know you can't install more than one firewall, but how about more than one virus program ?I moved your post to a more appropriate area. And NO - you cannot install more than one anti virus app - but neither MalwareBytes nor Windows Defender is an anti virus app. As for the latter, it is a complete and utter waste of resources - if I were you I would not continue to try to install it. Last, do you have an anti virus app installed and resident?Ok ! What do you recommend for a free anti-virus ?I've never used a free AV and hesitate to recommend something I haven't used. This will HELP: http://www.techradar.com/us/news/software/applications/best-free-antivirus-9-reviewed-and-rated-1057786

In addition, Norton has a free version and some people like Microsoft Security Essentials.I've used the free version of avast! Antivirus for a few years and can recommend it. You can find it at http://www.avast.com/index

Well, I'm not sure what you mean by cumbersome, as it relates to a web browser. Opera recently made some major changes to the browser and released them in version 16. The version preceding that 12.16, so they simply jumped to 16.xx in their numbering scheme instead of the usual progression of increasing the version number one numerical step at a time. I've heard some grumblings about this latest version so I am still using 12.16. If you want to try Opera, you can get it at http://www.opera.com/computer/windows; if you want to try version 12.16, scroll down that page and click on DOWNLOAD Opera 12.

Since you have some dissatisfaction with IE, why not try one or more alternative browsers? Firefox is another good alternative to IE. You can get it at http://www.ez-download.com/mozilla-firefox/ Quote from: Allan on September 28, 2013, 02:46:16 PM

Allan, what are you using for anti malware and antivirus protection? Kaspersky AV (always resident)
MalwareBytes (on demand)
SuperAntispyware Pro (on demand)
SpywareBlaster
WinPatrol Plus

Most important, I use common sense. I don't open links on websites or in EMAILS unless I am 100% certain I know what they are, I don't download anything unless I am certain of the source and contents, I don't visit websites unless I know they are safe, and nobody has access to my systems except me.

I began using computers in 1980 (started with an Atari 400, then an Atari 800, then an att 6300 and so on). I now have 5 computers in my home and am responsible for a number of others and have NEVER had any virus issues.Hi

Thanks for your most recent post.

I am layering up, recently downloaded a trial version of MalwareBytes

"On demand" means its a trial that I can RUN until it expires?

Regards
"On Demand" basically means that it does not scan or check files in the background, you have to manually click to run a scan with it. The other type is "resident" where the program will run scans and check files in the background.

As a general rule you should only ever have one "resident" program running at once but you can install as many "on demand" scanners as you want.Just to clarify the above post, you should never have more than one anti virus app installed at a time. You may have as many on demand ancillary scanners (ie, MalwareBytes, SuperAntispyware, etc) as you like - but only one av.

Solve : Need Software Security Advice?

Answer»

I RECORDED some education lectures and want to put them in some software and then copy on some media like dvds, usb or CDS etc.
how can i secure my product and restrict it to be copied.
How can i ensure that every person must BUY its own copy.
Any solutions/recomendations ?Please do not post the same question more than once. I deleted the duplicate.Unfortunately there is no real way to do this - There are systems that can make it a bit harder for someone to copy the DATA but there is no foolproof way. Basically - If someone can put something into their PC, there is no way to stop them from COPYING it.

I mean, look at movies being pirated all over the place - If there was a good way of stopping videos from being copied then movie piracy wouldn't happen.

Your only real option is to trust that people will not illegally share the content or that at least people will buy a copy even if it is available illegally.camerongray is right. There are individuals and groups that pose any for of copyright enforcement by digital or mechanical means. One in particular is the sire called "Pirate Bay". Anything that can be put on a PC that will let others download.

If the materiel is really good, consider getting a sponsor who will let people see it over the internet, but not download it. The sponsor will insert short commercial messages to pay for the cost. If you get a lot of traffic, the sponsor will give you a cut. maybe.

Solve : Analysis Program for Geographic Coordinates?

Answer»

I am a Geomatics Student and am looking for a program which will take a text file and analyze is to find all the unique ENTITIES and the number of times they occur then GIVE BACK the unique entities, number of times each occurs and delete any repeating entities so I can then take it into excel to create a histogram or just to do further geographic ANALYSIS.

The issue is I'm dealing with coordinates (Eastings,Northings) and excel can't analyze that type of data since it LIKE to break each one down individually.

Anyone who can help at all I would greatly appreciate it!! In dire straights here.An example of the text file and an example of the output you would like would probably help everyone figure out a solution for you.

Solve : Outlook 2007 email notification?

Hello

I have downloaded a .wav file to announce the arrival of new EMAILS, and I have followed this tutorial:

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/3510/outlook-2007-use-custom-sounds-to-alert-you-of-new-messages/

The sound email notification does not work after having closed and then REOPENED the software. I do not have Exchange server; my Outlook works only in the sense that it is LINKED to my Hotmail/Outlook account.

Does that make any DIFFERENCE?

Solve : Several problems with my computers?

Answer»

Problem 1: (Windows 7) This has only been happening recently in the past 2 days. I'm having a problem where my computer would get random lag spikes every 30 seconds or minute. When these lag spikes happen, FPS drops significantly and sound begins to stutter.

Problem 2: On my Logitech K330 Keyboard (wireless), I'd get random moments where the keyboard would stop working for a while (around 10-20 seconds). After the delay, several of the keys I pressed while it was not working would activate.

Problem 3: On my laptop, (Windows 8 ) I have a much more irritating problem where the computer freezes for around 5-15 seconds every 20-30 seconds or so. When I type on Microsoft Word while it is frozen, the words appear after the laptop is back to normal. However, backspace does not work while the laptop is frozen.

Any solutions to these problems would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance! Can you just do one thing at a time?
First, where do you live?
Are you in an area that has strange THINGS going on? Are you in area 51? At the south pole? Under a massive RADAR facility? A Mexican AM radio station running a megawatt?

The kinds of problems you have suggest environmental issues.
Um... I don't think there are any strange things going on per say... Currently live in Seattle, Washington near the University of Washington.Quote

OK. Let's look at this. Lag is common in network activity over the internet. What kind of internet do you have? DSL? Cable? Fiber optic?
Are you playing an on-line game when the lag happens?
How old is your modem and or router?

Do others share your internet connection?
What kind of AV protection do you ave?

This is a lack of responsiveness. It is not lag.

If you right-click on a drive in My Computer and select Properties, there should be a "Check Now" button on the Tools tab. That will allow you to perform a disk check.
