Well this is a preventative question. I bought a new computer (Dell Inspiron 530) a while back and it is using Vista which I am getting used to. I noticed a small lock button and Lock in the START menu which I obviously have not used. My wife uses this computer also and I am afraid that either she or I will hit that button accidentally since it is on the same list as switch users. Can that lock be removed from the system or can you at least tell me what to do when we hit it, (it will happen). We each have admin ACCOUNTS but neither have passwords. I hate typing it in every time I log in. An administrator account does not show up in the accounts list. Is there one that I should assign a password or does it matter. Your best ADVICE would be appreciated before I am locked out one day. hi all...i have an outlook 2007 installed and CONFIGURED. Before i had joined the company due to a problem, they had some users use outlook web access instead of outlook 2007. Now it says in outlook web access that they have their inbox quota full. so i reconfigured the outlook 2007, did a send and RECEIVE and GOT all of their emails from outlook web access to outlook 2007..now they are able to receiev emails on outlook 2007 but are not able to send for some reason. AND also, they are not able to receive emails to outlook web access.....but they can send it from there..any ideas??..THANKS.

Hi I have a problem. I am writing up my thesis and I use microsoft word 2003 on windows XP. I put my references in using ENDNOTE and WHILST doing this I have accidently pressed the UNFORMAT CITATIONS button. I have since done FORMAT BIOLIOGRAPHY to reformat, but my references are now inserted in the field code format which is BASICALLY a load of jiberish. I have to highlight my TEXT after every citation and right click the mouse to then select toggle field codes to then put them in normal format in my text which is BLOOD style.

Please can SOMEONE help me solve this problem??I have spent all day re writting my refs!!

After I have scanned a couple of postcard sized photos using Arcsoft Photo studio 5.5 I get the following message:

"There is not enough free disk space to complete the scan. Scanner driver will be CLOSED. Code: 31,0,0"

I then run CCleaner, shut all other programs and even reboot, but the problem always reappears. I neve had this trouble with my earlier version.To what folder is your scanner to save those files?

I've been downloading a series that's been on tv because I keep MISSING the episodes through bit torrent. I want to put them onto dvds so they can be played in dvd players, but I'm not sure what type of files the videos are. I use VLC media player to play them because when I click on the file it asks what I want to open the file with.

Is there a program that WOULD make it easy to convert the files to an .avi or .mpeg file? Do I need to know what type of file the videos are to do this?

I have 8 episodes so far and plan on downloading the rest as the come out, so the sooner I can get them on dvds to save space on my computer, the better.

Hopefully this is something someone can help with.

well you just download codecs. K-Lite codec pack or something like that would help. Then, you can convert to avi or mpg.

when my computer boots up, it now makes me make a choice between two different WINDOWS 2000 OS. I recently upgraded my windows 98 to 2000, and it seems to have installed twice, how do i get rid of the one I don't use? THANKS, CTo install Window so it it's the only OS you have to do a clean install which includes formating the HARD drive.
Just remember you have to backup all your documents, favorites, drivers, PICTURES & music files you don't want to loose or they will be gone.

I'm having problem with Java. I keep having to download it and then it WORKS for a while but when I turn of the comp (winXP) and reboot it it wont work again and doesnt appear on the bottom tray. Usual complaint that comes up is No Java Environment when I try use it. Can Java contain errors, viruses? What can a man do?

I went to that site u mentioned. It does not detect Java in the pink rectangle as it should eventhough I re-installed it few hours ago. I also tried the about:plugins method and got the following:

Tester on recommended site apparently did not work for me either....

I have an hp PAVILION notebook with vista that is about a year old. In the past week, I've noticed that I'm almost out of disk space. Its a 105gb hd that only has about 300mb left. I started uninstalling programs with the uninstall feature but would end up with even less space. I've run spyware scans, and virus scans with numerous different programs. I've used disk cleanup and defragment. I've removed all pictures, movies, and songs, but I'm still showing low disc space. I've got a few small programs left on there but they are essential ones. I've run regedit and I do still find items from old programs in there that I delete, but the disk space is still low and doesn't increase even after uninstalling programs. My c: drive is showing that it is working properly. I don't know what else to do besides wipe it all out and start over. Please help!!!

I need some advise/help for a solution. I would like to BACKUP ghost images to a RIS Server. Once on the RIS Server, I would like to use a virtual machine to open the image and preform all updates. When I am DONE working on the image, I would like to upload the image I just work on to the RIS Server. I am USING GHOST32 11.0 is there any particular format I have to save the image in? Please advise RIS has its own imaging format. Ghost is more useful for sysprep installs.

Well, I'm assuming that I'll be around longer than ten years! Anyway...here's to the 'chase!'CD's were NOT given a "Death sentence" from DVD's or HD-DVDs.

They are STILL a standard that is implemented by thousands of devices, from CD-players to stereo's to any number of other electronics.

The only devices that can be CALLED "dead" are things like Jaz Drives, Zip Drives, and SuperDisk Drives, and even then they still have a (perhaps foolishly) loyal FOLLOWING. The only reason they died out was not because of technical inferiority at the time but in some cases simply that they had TERRIBLE marketing departments.

Now, the media itself, on the other hand, has a reduced archival rate... this is easily SOLVED via regular duplication (if you can't set aside a few minutes every 5 or 10 years to make a duplicate it really can't be that important, can it?).

Additionally, CD-ROM drives were introduced over 10 years ago- it took that long for floppy drives to become "optional" components, even though they stored over 700 times as MUCH as a floppy.

Whenever i open Windows Live Mail, i get a message saying 'folder could not be displayed' (see picture below) its nothing to do with low disk space or memory, it has never done this before and i've not installed any new software recently. You can try this: If you're USING Windows Live Mail to get your HotMail...which is what I can see from your images...you can try closing Windows Live Mail and log into your HotMail account. You can then read and delete all your email from there...INCLUDING anything in your Junk folders and Deleted Items folder. Basically, you'll be cleaning up your Hotmail account via the web server. Once this is done, log out of HotMail's web service, then try using your Windows Live Mail account, again, to see if you're still getting the same error.

It could be as simple as a single email from your HotMail account CAUSING this issue.

So I just got this computer (used) and it came with windows 2000, no I do not have the disk. My friend installed windows XP on it, thinking it would overwrite the other operating system. It didn't and now I have both XP and 2000 to choose from when I first start it up. I want to delete 2000 and all the stuff saved on it, how do I do this?

When you start up XP it asks you if you want to partition the disk and gives you a choice of where to partition. Tell it you want to partition the disk at the same location the prior OS is located. it will ask you if you want to do a full NTSC partition or a "quick" version of that, or a FAT partition. Tell it you want to do a full NTSC partition and it will then warn you everything on the disk will be lost, which is what you want.Personally i would start over from the beginning...
Wipe both partitions...set your partition size and do a clean install of XP...If you don't want to do a clean install try this. The folder for Win 2k will be C:\Winnt

Good luckSince this is a new install of XP, Starting over would be the best/easiest option IMO.

If Windows 2000 is no longer on the computer, but the computer thinks it is, a modification to the Boot.ini file would remedy the situation.If you have both OSes installed on the same partition, it gets a bit messy.

Modifying the boot.ini file will allow the PC to boot only to XP without asking.

However, cleaning off the remnants of the Windows 2000 install can be a bit of a hassle. As mentioned above, Windows 2000 installs to the C:\WINNT folder and XP installs to C:\WINDOWS, so that makes life a little easier...I'll never understand people's reluctance to a wipe and clean install...
Even if i do this another Hundred yrars...only reason I'd ever see to not do a clean install is data... but that can be backed up.

Hey guys, any gamers out there will have noticed that more and more games run on Steam.

My problem is that recently my HDD fried and the data was partially recovered.
THINGS that didn't get recovered included my games.

When I go to re-install them (Total Wars: Empires, Dawn of War II and a few others) they get to a certain point and freeze.

I'm certain that steam is the issue here as many non-steam games reinstalled fine.
Also, steam stops my PC from shutting down properly, I have to "End program now" steam and that IM thing, steam messenger, I think, whenever I want to shut down.

Does anyone have some advice on what the problem is exactly and how to fix it, god I HATE steam.

Alright, as it stands, I intend to re install Dawn of War II and Empire: Total Wars.

As for installing over the old directories, I'm not sure, though that would probably make sense if that is the problem since the restore didn't work properly.

I recently deleted steam because it was driving me insane (wasn't letting the system shut down properly), so I'll try installing it again.

It seems that only the Steam games are having problems. Installed several other non-steam games without any trouble.

I'm not sure where I should post this QUESTION.

Hello All! I'm GOING to install a NEW MoBo.... I know I must install my OS (Vista) and then the New MoBo CD with drivers on the clean HDD..... My question is.... Do I use the latest backup I have and install those files on that HDD..... If So, how do I do that properly..... I've used ACRONIS Migrate 07 with success, but never changed out a MoBo.... I did a recovery on my laptop about 2 months ago, then I was STILL having issues with the pc and took it to the computer shop and had it fixed sort of. I go home and I realized about a few weeks later that my Microsoft software was not there anymore. Now I need my MS Word and Perfect and all the rest back. i use a wireless keyboard, hence no light to show caps lock on, for example when i put in passwords, you cannot see that you have type in capitals or lower case, so you only know when the message tells you your caps lock is on, this is frustrating, does any one know if it is possible to have a setting so you know the caps lock is on, for example a setting that will show up on your screen to say caps lock is on. Just for grins I would love to swap the sound file (wav?) that PLAYS as windows XP starts off after booting. You can TEST it by pressing the play BUTTON to make sure you have the right one and also, you are only able to use WAV files, though other formats can be converted easily to the WAV format.

Am I right in that FAT 16 can only support up to a 2. GB Hard Drive?

So if you have a small Hard Drive it will not be able to put 65,526 Cluters because it will not be able to fit them all on the Hard Drive RIGHT???

No, the cluster number remains the same but the cluster size diminishes.

So I see that the Cluster size changes because every Setor is 412 Bytes in size and it may take more or less of them to make every Cluster RIGHT?Huh??

I have just recently reinstalled my MS Office 2002, and I've noticed that when I attempt to open OUTLOOK, I get the gray screen that says Unable to display the folder. I think the reason I'm getting this gray area is because of the Registry CLEANER I'm using. (Paretologic) Funny, Word & Excel is fine, but not Outlook.

Previous information about whether "jusched.exe" is RUNNING I got from him and may not have been correct. I am on the problem PC now and do not see jusched.exe running in task manager with either IE or FF.

I got videos to play in IE. The problem was the add-on "Shockwave Flash Object" was dissabled.
But I still get the same error in FF.

Ok I got videos playing in FF. I'm not sure but I believe the culprit was that he had 'Accept COOKIES from SITES' turned off in 'Tools > Privacy.Is NoScript installed?

I'm not CLEAR here on what is and isn't running.

I know those scripts can be enabled and still by default be turned off with NoScript running.NoScript is not installed.
Jusched.exe is not running.

I was able to view You Tube videos with IE after enabling the add-on in 'Toolbars and Extensions' named "Shockwave Flash Object".

I was able to view You Tube Videos with FF after enabling 'Accept Cookies from sites' in the 'Options' settings under the 'Privacy' tab.

As far as I know these are the only changes I made to get the videos to SHOW. They are playing fine now with both browsers.

In outlook, it will show that it receives messages for the day, but when listed in order from TODAY to OLDEST there is nothing showing in the messages. However, when listed oldest to today, I can see the messages. This just STARTED. Can someone help me clear this up.

Okay that was a huge help thank you, but I have about 80 different DOBs going down a column, is there are way to just drag the formula down the age column while having the numbers of the rows change (i.e. in the formula =(b2-a2)/365.25, change the b2-a2 to b3-a3, without having to type the formula 80 times??

Actually one last thing...is there a way to delete the column with the =NOW() date without ruining the ages. Or maybe a way to copy that column without the formulas. I have to use a certain format to import this into another program and it has to go column 1:DOB, Column 2: Age. Do you know what i mean?

And I could just bring up this Program like a phone dialer and I just type in the phone number I wanted to call and I could here them over my Computers speakers and use my Microphne to talk to them.

When i put this all together and took my drive that has my xp on it(from the old com that i am using to write this)it said that windows was corrupted.I also get this message when i removed that drive.i get the same message when i try to load windows on the new drives and when i put in the disc with the drives on it that came with the mothboard.

Update....disconnected ata drives and tried to load windows and nothing happen.the same results when i try to load the drivers that come with the motherboarsYou can't simply move a Windows HDD from one machine to another and expect it to boot properly...

I suggest reading it thru first and also printing out a copy for REFERENCE...

Done properly all your data and apps will be intact...
Done improperly all your stuff will be gone but you will have a fresh install of XP...

When finished remember to install all your drivers starting with the MBoard chipset drivers FIRST.

so at my NEW JOB i have to learn outlook on exchange-server (2003) and i haven't really been getting what those .pst-files really are...and where they are for that matter .

So i'd LIKE to ask a few questions:

.pst is a CONTAINER file, containing what exactly? everything, mailbox, caledar, contacts? Is there a pst. for each of these?
How many pst are there? I've CREATED a new one today , for test's sake.

Is the pst on my local machine or on the server or on both?

(by the way, i think i do understand what an .ost is, it's only stored locally, correct?)

Some really weird things seem to have been happening lately.
Computer slowing right down to a crawl, on powering off windows update kicking in saying it's downloading an update which took over an hour to do,
and just other niggly things.
I'll do a separate post on the viruses/spyware FORUM later, but l don't think that's causing these problems as l've run everthing imaginable, and all are clear.
Now, when l try and empty the recycle bin via the "empty recycle bin" COMMAND, nothing happens. l'm having to highlight all the files and then selecting delete.
l've tried a restore to a week prior, but it still doesn't work properly.

When I open any PROGRAM the screen only partly opens so that I can see another program that is also open. If I only have one program open, the screen does not fully show the bar at the top with the minimizer and closer. If I pass the mouse over the MISSING part of the screen sometimes it comes into view as LONG as the mouse is hovering at the missing spot. Another example: in outlook express the message shows, but the words that are part of the outlook program does not show, but where the words are located are holes in the page that show any other screen from a DIFFERENT program that is open. What does this actually do, i have acronis installed but have not really bothered about setting limits/conditions.

So if i do set limits on a BACKUP (example) to say maximum 5 backups , then on the 6th backup i would have exceeded the maximum number of backups by one.

So then aotomatic consolidation will be performed.

But this puzzels me a bit after what i have read in the help pages it goes on to say " Automatic Consolidation only can consolidate two backups in one"
So i would have one full backup and 5 incremental ones So what does happen here when automatic consolidation is performed.

I am backing up to a external HARD drive, so here is another STATEMENT from the help pages.

" Description = Automatic consolidation in acronis true image home can be set up for any backup tasks that creates incremental or differential backups regardless of the archives storage place (EXCEPT FOR REMOVABLE MEDIA"
I' have never used this feature in Acronis so i can't advise...

I know it should make a new Master Boot Record for you.

What I don't understand is this?
When it makes your new MBR does it go in the same place as the old one and Overide it??

computer running slow
when it is running slow programs will start to not respond and I will have to go to task MANAGER to end the task and sometimes that takes forever

I am unsure about deleting programs since i have done it before on a different computer and nothing good came of it..

If you know you don't need a program then go to CONTROL panel, programs and features or add remove program (FORGOT what it is on XP) and then find the programs you KNOW you don't need and then right click and uninstall. After that you should run disk defragmenter to make everything that does load load a little faster.I like to first look at the icons at the lower right of the screen which indicate programs that are running. Some of these you can open, then look to see if there is an option in the preferences to de-select whether or not that program starts when Windows starts. Some programs have this option and some are more of a headache.
Next use the configuration utility under the "start-up" tab to deselect programs you don't need to start when Windows starts.
To get to the configuration utility screen:
Click 'Start > Run' then type msconfig and click OK, then select the 'Startup Item' tab.
If you are unsure of what program the entry is, don't deselect it until you find out.
Most of these can be identified by expanding the 'Command' column or simply doing a Google search with the name of the file listed under 'Startup Item'.

And I see several antispyware programs you have set to start when Windows starts. I don't know if all that spyware protection is needed or not but I doubt it.
A rule concerning virus protection is to have only 1 antivirus program installed and only 1 firewall enabled.
You can run multiple spyware programs till the cows come home but they use system resourses and will slow your system down.
I see you have Malwarebytes anti-malware which I use and highly recommend. I don't know about the others.
