Solve : Malwarebytes no longer free...but it is.? |
Answer» I have used this forum a few times to help me and friends. I recently referred it again to someone and decided to go through clean up steps on my PC. When I got to the Malwarebytes step, I could not FIND it on my PC and downloaded it again. After installing, it announced that my free trial had expired and that I needed to buy the premium version. I have been RUNNING it periodically for years. Are you going to replace it with another free utility? Thanks, JimMalwareBytes most certainly DOES still have a free version https://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/lp4/02_r/?gclid=CLT7z_uh4b8CFU4F7AodMy0AbQThis is the 4th time I have uninstalled it and downloaded. First using the link in the Malware forum, then following Google Search and now your link. I just got the same your trial has expired but this time, hit scan and it started to scan. Clever way to get you to buy the annual subscription. Screen shot below: [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]They give you a free trial period of full-time scanning. After the trial period has run out, you NEED to initiate the scans yourself.I remember now why I deleted it. I get a pop up window every day saying the database is out of date and after 5 or 6 clicks to update now it finally went away. Quote from: jklangen on July 27, 2014, 06:32:22 AM I remember now why I deleted it. I get a pop up window every day saying the database is out of date and after 5 or 6 clicks to update now it finally went away. I just did the same thing. I counted two clicks. Scan Now, and Update Now. "Scan Now" told me it needed to update the database stuff, and I clicked Update Now. When it finished it started the scan. As I recall the "Trial" stuff is either a checkbox in the installer or when you first launch it opting to initiate a free trial of their Premium version. And to correct whats been said there are no annoying popups sayin database is old...only when you invoke it for a scan... I'm seriously considering changing the Topic title because everything stated is inaccurate at best.I agree that it is still free. The free trial expiration banner did throw me for a while until I noticed that I could still scan anyway. I did delete it because I kept getting a pop up window that after repeated clicks to update the database would not go away. This was not when I initiated a scan. That did happen again after reinstalling and after 5 clicks went away and has not as of yet reappeared. I was an IT professional for 25 years so this post is not from you average doesn't pay attention customer! I got concerned because I recommend your anti malware service to folks and when one of your MAIN tools behaved differently then in the past I thought you all should know. Thanks for what you do, it is a great service.Your more than Welcome...and Thanx to you for spreading the word...I Don't think anything about MBAM has changed ,except that it now has a ridiculous User-interface that makes it look completely scammy. They have always offered a premium version. However, what changed I believe is that it now defaults to a Premium trial, rather than the free version as it used to. If anything the change to the UI is possibly of more concern. MBAM is now visually indistinguishable from the myriad of completely scam "Anti-malware" programs that are available. I didn't use it right away after they changed it myself and when I ran it the first time I thought I had contracted some trojan that was attempted to hijack MBAM in some way. That PAIRED with the pre-checked "Premium" option starts to edge MBAM into the 'scammy' territory, I think.content deleted by allan Try this License its the one i use it for my Customers.. Hope this helps What lucky customers - I can't think of a better person to be dealing with my computer than someone who seems happy to install pirated software on it... We do not support or condone this here and this is certainly not a good first impression of you on this forum... Unlike you, most of us actually buy software if we want it rather than stealing it! post edited by allanI've blocked the new poster's account and deleted the license key from his post. I also deleted the same data from the quote in the above post. I was stumped when I first saw the new UI. It's extremely generic, corporate and unnecessarily designed to appease to new users. It looks like shocking software such as regedit and it's ilk. With the added check box for premium services added to the installation process I fear it's just a matter of time before we see toolbars etc added. Solve : Something like Shelves for Windows? |
Answer» So I have two computers and an android tablet. On the android tablet I have an app called shelves and I love it. I am able to search for whatever movie or tv show and add them by clicking on the NAME. Like if I wanted to add all of 7th Heaven(11 season) I just type in 7th and search then click all the seasons I have. The down to this is there is really no good way to back it up or look the information up if I do not have the tablet with me. So I was wondering if there is something like that for Windows. The latest Chrome build includes number of other improvements, most notably a visual cue to find tabs that are autoplaying video or audio, but the biggest feature for PC users is Chrome OS on Windows 8. Google doesn't call it that, of course. Instead, the company coyly describes the new feature as a "new look" for Windows 8 "Metro" mode—a description that completely ignores the similarities between the modern Chrome app and Chrome OS itself.- From PC World of Jan 15, 2014 I have Windows 7 Quote from: LLckfan on July 21, 2014, 09:43:03 PM I have Windows 7Well, what can I say. Solve : Backed up computer. Now what? .WIM files?? |

Answer» Hello all, ...unlike other disk image formats, a WIM file contains a set of files and associated filesystem metadata. However, unlike sector-based formats (such as ISO or VHD), WIM is file-based: The fundamental unit of information in a WIM is a file. What the article does not make clear is that system files from one computer may not work on another computer. Solve : How can I convert PDF to RTF?? |

Answer» Let's say the PDF file is very simple. The version of WordPad in Windows 8/8.1 seems to work fine with RTF files containing images. But, I gather you're using an older version of Windows and WordPad.Yes, I also have Windows 7 and Windows 8, both 32 and 64 bit versions. Becyase of my handicap, windows 8 is of little value to me.. I spent years learning Windows XP, so I have little motivation for dropping it. I am a slow leaner. Thanks for the tips about word pad. I found an old version of Word that works fine. There are many free online file converter are available such as : 1. http://www.zamzar.com/convert/pdf-to-rtf/ 2. http://document.online-convert.com/convert-to-rtf You can download software and convert your files. Solve : You can buy new PC with Windows 7, not 8? |
Answer» Want to buy new PC with Windows 7, not 8 Why are we selling Windows 7 PCs in a Windows 8 world? The answer is simple: choice. We like giving you the option to get the computer that’s exactly right for you. Stop listening to people tell you Windows 8 is what you want. The choice is still yours. BTW: Windows 8 trial is still available. Try before you buy. It's just like when Vista came out and you could still buy computers running XP - This will however stop once MS stop selling licences for Windows 7. This date is currently set at October 31, 2014 for all versions other than Windows 7 Professional for which a date is not yet decided (Source: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/lifecycle). My big issue with this is thinking down the line - People will obviously jump into getting Windows 7 machines after their friends have claimed that Windows 8 is "bad" in some way - Down the line they will have to upgrade to something newer which will be even more difficult than moving onto 8.1 now as it will be even more different - Then we have another exact case of the issues that currently surround people still using XP, but this time it will be Windows 7. I can already imagine the screams of "How dare Microsoft drop support for Windows 7, I gave them $99 for it 10 years ago, they should GIVE me support for it for as long as I want". Quote We like giving you the option to get the computer that’s exactly right for you.As long as you want either Windows 7 or Windows 8 Standard, apparently. IF a company is going to go on about how they offer consumers a choice they really should actually give a real choice. What if I want Fedora Core? Why would MS wanna offer Fedora Core as an option ? ? Makes no sense. If people wanna run a Linux distro they are there for the taking... Quote from: patio on July 11, 2014, 08:29:23 PM Why would MS wanna offer Fedora Core as an option ? ?Right. This thread is about choices for Microsoft OS. There are some major makers that do offer Linux to special customers. But that is another topic. (in 2012 HP invested ted money in Barcelona for Linux) Right now the choice for a Microsoft Intel Desktop is Windows 7 or 8. Quote from: patio on July 11, 2014, 08:29:23 PM Why would MS wanna offer Fedora Core as an option ? ?Microsoft doesn't manufacture PCs. HP is the one offering this, and DELL has offerings that include Linux. Quote Makes no sense.I agree, it would make no sense for Microsoft to offer Fedora Core as an option. Microsoft, however, is not involved here. HP is the one offering the choice between Win8 and Win7. My point is HP saying "it's about giving a choice" is a lie, because it's still a case of "you can choose anything you want as long as it's one of these two specific options made by one software vendor" and I don't think I would call that a choice. BC, I don't get want you are ranting about. HP has long been a contributor to Linux and open source software. HP said they offer a choice. A choice can be from a set of two or more possibilities. Nothing in HP's advertising says you must only use Microsoft on a HP. Many major makers offer Linux, but not always on the same models. Here is a bit of information: Quote HP will now have a seat on the Linux Foundation's board of directors and will be directly involved in advancing Linux-based initiatives, workgroups, events, and other efforts.By Katherine Noyes in PC World -Nov 6, 2012 Myself, I have XP, Windows 7 and 8 on my computers. And I hare a large collection of Linux CDs I can install when I want to. When I am ready to buy a new computer I might chose Dell. Or HP. Or maybe something else. If I do it this year I can have a choice of Windows 7 or 8 if I want. IMHO Microsoft with do a sp-2 of Windows 7 professional next year which will extend support for Windows 7 Professional. But by then I might want to go with Windows 8. If I buy a touch screen desktop. I have a choice. Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 11, 2014, 11:26:06 PM BC, I don't get want you are ranting about.Let me be more clear. HP's quote is: "Why are we selling Windows 7 PCs in a Windows 8 world? The answer is simple: choice. We like giving you the option to get the computer that’s exactly right for you." This is NOT what they are doing. Because they are only offering TWO options. Sure, two options are a choice, but it's not going to facilitate much in getting somebody the "computer that is exactly right for them". What grinds my gears here is the fact that they are saying that the reason they are providing Windows 7 is to make it possible for people to get the computer that is exactly right for you. Call it wordplay pedantry, but Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 are not going to be the only two OS's required for every single possible customer to get the "computer exactly right for them" so it's disingenous. The reason they are offering Windows 7 is because that way people who are scared of Windows 8 will buy from them instead. They aren't providing it because they approve of providing choices, they are doing it because they like people to give them money and that was the way they decided to try to do it. If it was about "choice" they would be offering more than a OS provided from one Vendor. Quote HP has long been a contributor to Linux and open source software. What does this have to do with anything? Microsoft has been long been a contributor to Linux and Open Source software too. Quote HP said they offer a choice. A choice can be from a set of two or more possibilities. Nothing in HP's advertising says you must only use Microsoft on a HP. Many major makers offer Linux, but not always on the same models. They offer a choice between Windows 7 and Windows 8. They claim that this decision to provide the choice was motivated because they want to provide the choice to allow people to get the PC exactly right for them. But that isn't the reason. If it was, they would have provided a Linux distribution as one of the choices. The reason is really "We want to get people who are still afraid of Windows 8 to buy from us instead of the competition, and we don't want to sacrifice the ability to load the system down with USELESS crapware to subsidize it". Quote Here is a bit of information:By Katherine Noyes in PC World -Nov 6, 2012NONE of which is particular relevant. |

Solve : Icon Image Questions? |
Answer» While I know that there are software utilities out there to create your own icon images for applying to programs etc, I am not sure if there are any tools out there that allow for you to capture the icon image used to apply to a different file if that is even legal or not, for personal use and not for using it on something that is shared with others? Most Icon Editors can extract the icons from a dll, exe, or ocx file as well hmm didnt know this... any editors you can suggest with so many options out there? Also regarding.. Quote If you want to change the icon used for the program itself you'll likely need Resource Hacker though. Icon Programs that do allow changing of executables after editing icons will usually lose other information from the program's resource table. Wasnt sure how the icons were bundled to the file. For all programs I have written, its always been whatever the default is. I figured people after they wrote their program compiled the program as an EXE and then used a icon utility to wrap icon image info to meta space of a file etc. This is a very grey area that I dont understand well and I am sure it shows in how I am wording all of this. With other icons changed for programs and batch scripts etc, I generally used the ones available in the Windows\system32 location where there is a dll with a limited list of icon images to use such as a star or green arrow or a tree or CD ROM image or network image etc. Then applied one of those to the EXE or Batch file that I want to have that icon appearance on the desktop. Quote from: DaveLembke on July 10, 2014, 03:01:35 PM hmm didnt know this... any editors you can suggest with so many options out there?I don't do much Icon Editing, Axialis Icon Workshop is what I use but it's not (usually ) free. It definitely allows reading icons from executables. I believe IcoFX, another Icon Editor program, which is free, also is able to read icons from executables and files. Quote Wasnt sure how the icons were bundled to the file. For all programs I have written, its always been whatever the default is. I figured people after they wrote their program compiled the program as an EXE and then used a icon utility to wrap icon image info to meta space of a file etc. This is a very grey area that I dont understand well and I am sure it shows in how I am wording all of this. Typically compiled directly into the program. Most Development software let's you simply choose an icon and it get's compiled in. I've forgotten how it determines which icon to use for the Application icon (that is, what icon the program gets as a shortcut or in Windows EXPLORER). But I think it uses the first Icon resource in the file for that purpose. The resources get compiled separately at a low level. if you have to use the base-level tools you would use RC.EXE, The Resource Compiler, and compile a Resource Script. This compiles into a .RES file that can be included as part of the build. Higher level (or, better) development tools typically just let you create a resource script and provide a UI environment to add, remove, edit, and change various resources (Strings, icons, etc). And then automatically includes the resources in the executable. of course dll files are really the same format as executables, so they have their own resources. Windows includes a few resource-only dlls, one of which is specifically for icons, "moricons.dll". To experiment and confirm what I mentioned above regarding the first icon being used as the application icon, you can rename moricons.dll to moricons.exe (of course, do this with a copy). And... boom! it changes to the MS-DOS icon. The .DLL icon is always the same because it is setup that way in the registry. (it points directly at a icon in shell32.dll) but .exe files are associated such that they use themselves as the source of their icon, and the extraction defaults to GRABBING the first icon. It's even possible to make all executable programs show the second icon in their resources, though this makes everything look really stupid. Resource Hacker is immensely useful, it only works for 32-bit programs and has been abandoned, but still serves a good usage. You can pretty much grab any data you want and even change it inplace. I "customized" Visual Basic 6 by editing vb6.exe using Resource Hacker and was able to edit the References dialog to be larger to use more of my screen space. I also embedded a Styles manifest, which is basically an XML file that get's embedded with a specific name that XP and later know about to check that a program "knows" about new styling stuff. XP and later check that to see if they should let a program use THEMES. If the program doesn't have it is assumed it doesn't know and it doesn't get themed to make sure it doesn't break. Thanks BC for the info with details on how it all comes together etc. When I get home from work tonight I am gonna see what I can do. |

Solve : Can you set up an automatic daily email containing content from a folder?? |
Answer» Howdy to all who graciously help on the forum because Google can't turn anything up. (using OS Maverick) If you have a Windows XP or later computer available to run as a email creation server off to the side, the info below applies as a method to pull this off. The Mac computer can then open the e-mails created from the Windows computer just as you open other e-mails from PEOPLE who send you e-mail from Windows or Linux systems ETC. This would be so much easier if you made a website to visit when in need of looking at this info. As FAR as what I am reading you want to spam yourself with this info on a rotation if I read this correctly. While this can be done, its far more involved than a simple website with a java script that reads in the day or uses a random generator for content to display and applies a picture etc to the web page etc. For this to work via e-mail for FREE you would need to do some programming because I dont know of any other way around this as for I dont believe you will find a software on the market that is an install and leave computer RUNNING to e-mail you to another computer etc. Do you have any programming experience and if so what languages and to what level? Best Option below for Windows computer e-mail creation only: The most simplest method I can come up with would cost you about $69 by use of this software here: http://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/purchase/ Basically you would have to have a computer running 24/7 just for this purpose of sending yourself e-mail. You then create a macro that constructs the content you want to be included in the e-mail running through all the motions of what would normally be necessary to send an e-mail with attachments etc, and send it to yourself. Then end the macro recording and compile this to an EXE. Then save this EXE such as Monday.EXE, and then create other macros that e-mail with attachments for the other days of the week etc, and save them here in this same folder. So you now have 7 EXE's Then you create 7 individual scheduled tasks to windows scheduled tasks to trigger to run the EXE of this macro at say 1am. At 1am the schedule task runs and with you maybe sleeping your computer comes to life with mouse pointer moving on its own and logging in to your e-mail and doing everything that you originally did, and then sending the e-mail. Then when you open your e-mail later that day you have an e-mail to yourself to open. Now you probably would want to not have every day of the week predictable. And to do this you would want to randomlze it. So you could if you know how to program start a random e-mail lottery program that picks out a random e-mail to send and so you can rename the e-mail macros that are 7 days of the week to 1.exe, 2.exe, 3.exe, and so on for as many different ones you want. So say you have a pool of 10 different e-mail makers now and the random number from 1 to 10 is 4, it will run the 4th one at 1am, and then the next day its 6, and then the next day its 1, and then the next day 9, and so on and unpredictable. I really like this macro recorder because its very very handy for making something happen that would otherwise be complex and many programming hours to pull off a far easier task to pull off in little time with some creativity for redundant tasks. Here is the software that is pretty easy to use. You need to have the Pro version for $69 in order to make EXE's, and you would need to have a 2nd computer that runs 24/7 that sends the e-mails out or if run on this computer if its a laptop that you take around with you, your computer would have to be on to send the e-mail to itself at say 1am etc. http://www.jitbit.com/macro-recorder/Happy Fourth of July to you DaveLembke Thank you for your in depth response. Sorry you went down the Windows trail for a bit. My programming skills at the moment are nil and I am only familiar with the names of the programing languages. It's a skill that I intend to develop in the future. That macro recorder program looks really nifty, though my idea is not enough of a problem to invest $$$ into. I suppose I can just set my self periodic calendar reminders to go look at those files. |

Solve : Windows Live Mail pictures not included when sending? |
Answer» I rarely get INWARD email where the pictures do not open in Windows Live Mail, but when sending (or rather, forwarding) emails with pictures in them - I get a message to say "One or more of the pictures in this message could not be found. When you send this message, these pictures will not be included. As you sure you want to send this message"? "One or more of the pictures in this message could not be found. When you send this message, these pictures will not be included. As you sure you want to send this message"? It is ok if I insert and ATTACHMENT - never happens then, only with jokes or cartoon pics in emails. JudySave the pics you want to send in a folder....Then you can forward them or include them in any new email message. It isn't worth it PATIO - they were only jokes I was forwarding on, not photos. But thanks anyway. |

Solve : Problem with programs when not connected to the internet? |
Answer» When i'm not connected to the internet, every program and file that i try to open takes a very long time to finally open and sometimes wont open at all. I have thought about reinstalling Windows but since i dont have a CD and the key propably wont work because Windows was preinstalled when i bought this computer. This statement sounds fishy..... This system is an Acer Predator G3610, and should have a product key label on it that has the genuine Windows 7 product key. Are you the original owner of this computer? If you are the original owner the key on the computer will allow activation without any problems as long as it is not flagged as pirated by microsoft activation servers. If not the original owner, has this product key label been removed by prior owner ? ( to be used for a duplicate installation of the same key on more than 1 computer maybe ) ** The Good news is that if you have owned this system since it was brand NEW from purchase unopended box from a retail outlet, you have nothing to worry about. However if you bought this computer second hand and the prior owner skoffed the key off of it for their own system and sold this system to you, it means that you will run into activation issues which may require you to buy a new copy of Windows 7 64-bit to have an unused ( unpirated key ). If this system was bought new and you know that your key has not been stolen or misused but is damaged to where it cant be read, you can use a program like Magic Jellybean to read your key according to the systems INSTALL. Then create a restore set of this system if you dont already have a restore set created, and then install clean and use the key just as reported by Magic Jellybean and you should be ok.Yes i have owned this PC since it was brand new. There is a sticker on the case with the key on it. I did some research on the net and came to the conclusion that the key will work. I have DECIDED to reinstall windows and see if that fixes my problems. Thanks From your list of installs i suspect a nearly full HDD...which dramatically affects performance...I forgot to add my HDDs to the spec list: 1TB drive for Windows and another 1TB for data and Steam games. But i reinstalled windows now and now everything is smooth! Quote But i reinstalled windows now and now everything is smooth! Good to hear... Thanks for posting back so we know this is now resolved. |

Solve : Word document empty? |
Answer» I had a document in Word 2003 which I saved to desktop - now when I open the said document, it is blank - yet it had information on it when it was saved. Is there any way I can retrieve this document? And, by the way, having the macro mentioned above in Word does not affect my opening and viewing of Word files. So, I do not know what is going on in your case.I don't know what happened either, but I got a message to SAY something like disabling macros, and now I cannot open new documents or pdf docs. Could someone please show me how (in easy steps) - because I can't understand M/Softs "help". I am very FAMILIAR with a lot of things in computers, but macros have me stumped.PDF files should open in a PDF reader. Are you saying you can't open PDF files in a PDF reader (Adobe Reader or whatever PDF reader you have installed)? The pdf files open ok - I was talking about word docs. They are set to open in Word 2003, but open up as an empty document. This is because I thought I was doing the right thing when I was prompted to disable the macros. If I save the docs. I can then "Open with" and choose Kingsoft Writer, where they open OK, but I shouldnt have to do this. I prefer Word 2003 anyway. For macros to exist in Word, they have to be created by someone using Word. I gather you did not knowingly create any macros since you knew nothing about them. Does anyone else who might have created a macro use your computer? Deleting macros might be a solution. See http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/delete-macros-HP005189419.aspxSorry I've just noted this message, I am on laptop at the moment, so which do what you say on my desktop tomorrow. I am the only one who uses the desktop - I did answer a question where I was given the choice of disabling or abling - the message just popped up - so I clicked on "disable" thinking that was what I had to do.I went into tools macro - and it was blank. It says Macros in (and the option selected) was All active templates and documents) Under that is Macro created 11/6/2014 by owner .... I'm thinking that is where the error lies - should the option be normal.dot )global temmplates)I'm thinking Kingsoft may be the culprit here...So what do I do? lol Delete Kingsoft?Check there for your missing docs... Quote I went into tools macro - and it was blank. As I said in an earlier message (above) There are no missing documents as such. It's only if I open docs in Office 2003 that the site is blank, but if I open "with" Kingsoft, the documents are there.Patio, as I said - I CAN access the docs in Kingsoft, but I am really wanting to fix up this macro problem. My preference is for Word 2003.Ok - I'm marking it solved. |

Solve : CPU Temp Monitor App? |
Answer» I would like to monitor CPU temperature on my old HP desktop running Win7. Just read a post that said thermal paste can dry out on old PC's which raised my curiosity. What 3rd party app do you folks recommend? THANKS.Personally I USE HWMonitor to measure temperatures. When checking temps it is also important to check them under high CPU load rather than at idle, for that I use Prime95 or the Intel Burn Test to run the CPU at 100% load on all CORES so that it really heats up. Solve : Windows 7 Pro Right Click Issue? |
Answer» For some time now I've been having a problem when I go into Documents and Right Click on a FILE or Folder in order to either, Copy, Delete, or Cut it. I will Right Click to bring up the Menu that includes those choices and it takes sometimes over a MINUTE for the Menu to show up. I've had computers since 1994 and I've never had this problem before. I have a Lenovo Desktop Idea Center, Windows 7 PRO, and I've installed the Home and Student version of MICROSOFT Office. I can Right Click in other areas and the Menu will pop up immediately. For instance if I wanted to copy a paragraph from a Word Document, it will work just fine, but will not load immediately when I Right Click on a File or Folder. I can't say exactly when this problem started but it is a real pain when I want to Copy FILES or Folders to my external hard drive to back them up. Has anyone out there had this problem and how did you address it? Thank you..... |

Solve : 35% Discount Coupon Code on Acronis True Image 2014 Premium !? |
Answer» Acronis True Image can be bought at a 35% discount. AAcronis discount, Acronis coupon, true image 2014 promo. Don’t miss to get the best backup solution in the software industry. Now you can access all FEATURES with an AMAZING 35% Discount for the 2014 Premium version. The Discount will be available only for a limited time. Hurry Up!But you can get a free trail the Acronis web site. My question is: Why even buy it if you get a free trial? They SAY the 2014 Acronis True Image is certified to be fully compatible with new Windows 8 PC s.My question is: Why even buy it if you get a free trial? Sounds like the winzip method here.... winzip had a free trial that many people used beyond the trial terms. While it would probably work to use the trial to create a restore image, use of applying the restore image beyond say the 14 days would require .... cant state the trick here ... but if no orphan REGISTRY entries are left behind from it to prevent what I cant state here, it could be used for free once or twice a year as a system recovery back to image is needed etc. I havent tried this trick with true image that I cant state here to know if it protects itself against such tricks. |

Solve : Best programs to unzip files.? |
Answer» I did USE some of these, but don't remember what OPTIONS they have. ...Thanks. I will go with 7-Zip. I use PowerArchiver, myself. In the early days of DOS I used the ARC compression utility, then along came PKARC with better performance and better compression. ARC then sued PKARC for name infringement so PKARC became PKZIP (PK = Phil Katz, the dev) and the .zip extension was used instead of the .arc extension. Not long after, ARC withered and died. I used PKZIP for quite a few years but then migrated to Winzip and now use 7-zip. I believe 7-zip will do all that you need and, as pointed out by DaveLembke, it's FREE.I've used 7-zip for as long as I can remember, never had a PROBLEM with it. It's lightweight, free and does everything I've asked of it.I've used 7-zip for a while now and have had absolutely no problems. I can't tell you much about the other programs, but 7-zip has served me well so far. Thanks all. I went with 7-zip. |

Answer» Hello everyone and those who are reading my post I would first like to thank you all for your help. I recently backed upped my computer and music to an external HARD DRIVE (A WD "My Passport Ultra) and afterwards I restored my computer to its factory settings. I moved all the data back onto the restored computer and I get this MESSAGE whenever I attempt to open my file (picture below) I have attempted to change the ownership of the files to "Everyone" but I still get the same message when I attempt to open my music using windows media player. Try right clicking the drive itself and go thru the change ownership steps...+1 for this suggestion. I did the same on a drive that I moved from another computer - what a headache it was until I FIGURED that out.Cool Beans... Glad you're fixed up. |

Solve : Microsoft Office 2003 task pane formating? |
Answer» Hi, I have a problem in office 2003. In the creating new document tab in task pane the hyperlinks have changed color in green instead of blue and I don't know how to reverse it. Clean up your Registry's SharedDLLs key. Orphaned entries can cause install and uninstall programs to misbehave. And can even trigger bogus Registry Corrupted error messages. The program can also removed "ghosts", entries in the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs LIST that remain even after a program has been uninstalled. Note: This tool was CREATED many years ago and has worked for me with older OS. I havent tested it with 64-bit OS yet, and unfortunately Karen passed away a few years ago due to diabetes complications. Her brother is still keeping her site and programs live for people to use, but her projects are frozen from updates and eventually they will no longer be compatible with future OS's. |

Solve : What is the best pc tuneup?? |
Answer» I have installed pc tuneups and today I want to see everyone's opinions about these softwares. Plz reply for suggestions or questions None of them at all. I suggest that you don't use any of them. Quote from: Quantos on April 03, 2013, 11:58:26 PM None of them at all. I suggest that you don't use any of them. Ditto.I am answering your PM here. Do not PM for support, you won't get it. Don't use them because they don't work and they usually make a mess of the computer.Registry utilities cause problems, they don't cure them. The best registry utilities are benign and do absolutely nothing. The worst of them can leave your system useless. If you are having specific issues with your system please tell us about them and we'll try to help. Quote from: Quantos on April 03, 2013, 11:58:26 PM None of them at all. I suggest that you don't use any of them. Good AdviceI voted with other, which is to manually remove unnecessary services etc to remove wasted resources and clock cycles. Did this a while back with a Windows XP computer using BlackViper's info here: http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-xp-x86-32-bit-service-pack-3-service-configurations/ And then created a ghost image of this system after going through this as a clean optimized baseline for my prior gaming rig. After all, a clean installation of Windows is what services etc, Microsoft Believes you need, and there are features you probably dont need that are enabled that can be dumped from automatic service start to optimize a system. Newer systems will probably not see much of a gain from removing unnecessary common Windows services, but the single-core Athlon XP 2800+ 2.08Ghz I was running saw a good gain removing unnecessary services and remving the bloatware that came with the Compaq from factory. I transformed the XP installation from clutter of unneeded services and programs to as clean and optimized as can be without removing important services etc. I also saw a great gain in performance by running this system without Norton Antivirus on it. I installed a removable HD bay and made an 80GB optimized drive and then used the sytem recovery CD's to make a 40GB drive to build as factory with antivirus running etc which didnt need to be optimized, but needed to be secure. Would swap hard drives and boot system up for whatever purpose I needed, 40GB for slow and secure, or 80GB for fast and at risk only if I downloaded anything without testing it first from the 40GB build. *Never got infected and the system ran nice and fast on that 80GB that was clean as could be. A long time ago I used Norton System Works and it caused problems on my systems registry. Since then if I want to optimize my system, I will manually do it, and create a registry backup copy first before making any large changes that are not as simple as flipping a 1 to a 0 etc.I was SEVERELY dissapointed when MS REMOVED hardware profiles feature after XP... It was the most efficient WAY of testing DIFFERENT service setups. But since the Topic isn't really about services i'll add my 2 cents and state i wouldn't recommend any of the products listed above...Period.Thankyou very much for the advices. By the way I did not really use any pc tuneups (i just installed them), but it is good to hear all this advices. But it is a application in China and somehow it cannot work in other countries maybe because of connection. But one of it's function"delete" is still USEABLE so i took it out from the app. It is pretty useful as you can delete a bunch of files(for example, all zip files, and ,any more deleting functions)I've never heard of an app that wouldn't work depending on what country you are in...nor would i trust it.
