I am facing problem while installing new programs in my computer. It happens in recent days only. All other existing programs are running perfectly. WHENEVER I try to intall a new program in my machine, it is not gettting installed. Setup program get closed. I don't know why it happens?? Can you please help me in this regards?? VincentCouple of things come to mind.

How did you uninstall the AV? Did you USE the uninstaller that came with the package? Did you use the Add/Remove Software in the Control Panel? Did you just delete directories?

A previous install/uninstall did not complete normally. Most Microsoft products will INFORM you of this situation and either tell you to boot or ROLL back the previous install.

Installing a new installer could be problematic however, since that's the very problem you're having.

Let us know about the AV. You may have to delete all references in the registry manually. Thanks for your effort on giveing solution to me. I removed the AV from Add/remove programs and it was successfully removed. So problem may not lay there.

Then wot abt the installer installation. Wot could be the problem. Anyway let me try this.

I need help to identify the below file. I found it on my comp and I have no clue as to what it does or where it come from. I did a search for it on the web but didn't get MUCH help.

I have only had my comp for a little over a month. When I look at the properties for it it says that was created on the 10th of June, 06 but was modified on the 4th of Dec. 2000.

before i use Raxco Perfect disk defrag v7 trial
i noticed while its defraging it says also it optimizing the file
now that the trial version is end, i use now the Power Defragmenter Gui with contig (i think the fastest defragmenter AVAILABLE as of now)
is there any other program that optimizing the file also?

thanks for readingWindows built in defragmenter works just FINE, and is included in all versions. There is no real advantage to other products for the AVERAGE user, and you don't need to do it very often.

You have to setup the string and pass it ALONG to the printer. Possibly a write string.

I am running WINDOWS XP and having problems with norton internet security. It often fails to launch properly. When it fails, i try and launch it myself but it says "only supervisor can be granted access" so i have to turn PC off & back on until it launches itself properly. I purchased a laptop LAST YEAR. However, it started running SLOW. There are some files that I'm unable to locate and delete. How can format the C Drive? I could do it if I had Windows XP, Office 2003, and all hardware cds. However, the coimputer did not come with those cds. I have a SET of 12 cds and I think everything is in those cds. I've been using outlook 03 for a few months now and, and this morning is the FIRST time that I encountered this problem.
When I opened outlook, INSTEAD of sending/receiving, it started to do something CALLED "downloading hierarchy," and has been doing that ever since. It stopped receiving NEW emails, although I can still send, forward and do all those things.
Does anyone have an idea how I can get outlook to stop downloading hierarchy and start receiving emails again?

What do you mean by goofy? I do not see anything wrong in that PICTURE apart from the somewhat bizzare colours, but these are most likely your own doing.

You can reconfigure the colour schematics by doing the following:

1. Right click on the Desktop
2. SELECT properties
3. Appearance tab

I had looked there, but I did not quite know what to LOOK for. I assumed it would simply display the bookmarks as Internet Explorer did.

As for Thunderbird, I think simply copying the ENTIRE Profile folder will suffice.

I use AdAware and Spybot. As MENTIONED previously, one is seldom enough! adaware does me fine... but ive never tryed spy bot and adaware together, so i cant say how well that worksAd-Aware is ok , however it doesnt even begin to offer the protection that Spybot offers ....you should be using both ...... they get along just fine .


dl65 ill remember that, i know how much of a headache it can be to clean up spyware and adware manuallyI hate both Ad-Aware and Spybot. Neither offer real-time protection, giving the Spyware plenty of opprotunities to disable the protector. Not just that, but I want to know the second I get something. How can I enter a character in Edit.exe which will cause a page to be ejected from the PRINTER when printing a file using Notepad please :-?



Notepad doesn't recognise ASCII page feed characters QUITE the way DOS-level programs understand them. I'm not sure, but possibly HITTING Ctrl+Enter in Notepad might force a new page. Try that from Notepad. If it works, you can then inspect the file to find out what ASCII characters are used.

But normally, Notepad reformats pages and prints them as it sees fit. If you wish to have more control over layout, you REALLY should use a more sophisticated word processing package, many of which are available free of charge.Thank you - The suggestion for Notepad did not work so I will try Word..

I have a problem connecting to a printer that is installed via USB on a Win2000 machine. The o/s is Win98 and I think it is a driver problem.

When I go into the printer properties on the Win2000 machine, there is a section under 'Sharing' (Freigabe - i use german VERSION) about "additional drivers", that are apparantly needed when trying to ACCESS from another operating system.

I cliked on "Intel - Windows 95 or 98 - [not installed]" and it came up with asking the W2k-CD. I inserted the OEM cd, but I dont have the server edition, only the normal one.

So it is now looking for the printer driver for Win95 / 98 on this OEM CD in the E:\printers\Win9X directory. Which section is this on the normal CD? Or how else can I GET the drivers installed for the installation on my Win98 machine to work?

I have the following directories on my Ger_W2k_SP1 CD: BOOTDISK, DISCOVER, I386 (subdir. SYSTEM32/WIN9XMIG/WIN9XUPG/WINNTUPG), SUPPORT and VALUEADD.

Thanks for any help or guideline.The first thing you need to do is go to the manufacturer's web site for the printer and download all of the drivers, for WHATEVER versions of Windows you intend to support. Hopefully you'll also find some instructions there for supporting the printer over a network share.

Does anyone know how to time out a LOGGED user on Remote Admin. My company is trying to insure that our PROGRAMMER is only on our system when our manager is there (A bit of a trust issue with our programmer and his code of computer ethics.) But he can remote in at just about any time, and once he is in, he can pretty much stay in for as long as he LIKES. We don't want that, and I couldn't see where to set the program to force log out after a certain time, I know other Remote programs like Remote Admin have that feature. And I'm sure that this one does too, I'm just not seeing it.
So a little help would be appreciated
If you can't trust somebody why would you EVEN keep them around? Just a thought.....I would say lock down his permissions, and restrict the hours during which he can LOGON. He doesn't need to be supervised if the permissions are sufficiently restrictive.

I saved a DOCUMENT in the 'Symbol' font and when I reopened the file and tried to change the font BACK to Times new Roman all I can see is boxes. It is the same if I try to change the font to anything other than wingdings or other symbol type fonts. How to I FIX this.Pi ....... Have a read the answer is there .

I need HELP. I just got a new laptop about 10 days ago, a Dell E1505. Intel Dual Core processor T2400, 1 Gig of RAM, 256MB ATI Video card, just to GIVE you an idea. I transfered all of my music from my sister computer on to here using a Jump Drive, EVERYTHING is fine. I put a CD into the laptop, WMP loads fine but when I go to rip, no album information shows up. I search for Album Info and it finds the CD automatically. I hit finish to apply the information to the tracks that I am about to Rip and either nothing happens or it freezes up. This is frustrating to say the least as it works like a charm on my sister's desktop. Any suggestions? I could try reinstalling it but that should be a last resort. Thanks for any help.

Gizmo73Yes, I have. The thing is, the program will show the CD cover and all of the tracks for the CD, it just won't apply the information to the tracks that are ripped. I don't know what is wrong, unless the program is just missing a file or something.

FlameFrom the age of the 3300c I would assume he is running 9x, in which case the process is simple if he has his INSTALLATION cd.
1. start/run and click OK
2. select "extract one file" option and type in stimon.exe
3. insert the cd (hold down SHIFT key while cd loads to prevent AUTO run)
4. click start.
The file should automatically be extracted to c:\windows\system
Remove the cd, close SFC, reboot.

I plan on reformatting my Hard Disk Drive soon and dedicate the computer I am now USING entirely to high performance for applications such as games.

Are there perhaps certain steps I should take before or whilst reformatting the HDD and installing Windows XP that will give me an edge over a normal installation?

Speaking of performance, would an onboard soundcard and/or Network CARD drain more or less system resources than expansion cards?

Would it be adviseable to disable my onboard network card and install a NIC?

The soundcard is allready disabeled.

Also, I have heard of slip-streaming, how exactly is this done and what are the pro's? Can I do this when I have SP 2 on a seperate CD?

My usb mouse running through a usb to ps2 adaptor work faultlessly. The ps2 port was designed for a mouse whereas usb was designed for anything that fits in the hole.

Recently I have installed AVG FREE on the following system:

DeskPro EN Series K500/10NTL

Whilst installing, I decided to create a recovery disk to see what it would be like.

I clicked next until it had told me that it was creating bootdisk number one. I soon realised that I was going to need many diskettes and cancelled the progress. I then proceeded to update AVG Free without problems.

A while after, I had to reset the computer. And somehow, it managed to detect new hardware. At first I thought there was a problem with my external HDD, but this was not the case. I told it to look online for drivers and found none.

Then suddenly, I realised what it said.



It may be Dutch, but should look similair and familair to everyone using Windows XP.

This was not a problem. I did the Wizard once, completed it and it said the hardware MIGHT not function due to no drivers being found and installed.

I reset my PC again and I NOTICED that the wizard once again popped up. This time I told it that it had not warn me again and so it did. I removed the entry from unknown devices.

I then decided it was time for Judy Collins - Amazing Grace, which truly is a wonderful song, thank you very much Dusty and to my short lasting surprise, I had no sound. I configured Windows sound. Nothing wrong. No hardware conflicts. Nothing.

It took me one reset to determine that the speaker was still functioning (Built-in) due to start up beeps.

It took me another reset to reinstall the ESS 1968 Plug 'n Play soundcard.

And yes, this is my PC, I obtained it recently. You may notice the similair HDD specifications. This is because I moved the older HDD from my AMD pc to this Compaq DeskPro. Which originally had a 6GB HDD.

this morning i met my OLD friend and ask my help regarding his computer


the problem:
1-
first i installed a ccleaner and its working
then i installed registry mechanic, it detects 330 registry problem but it freeze there, it cannot stop there also in safe mode same work same problem
he told me that few days past he cannot connect to internet because of problem in network (TCP/IP) and im not so familiar in this thing.
so we tried to fix by, Control Panel ---Network and reinstalling TCP/IP but the problem is he dont have the CD Win98 sE (because its a old pc and its only a gift, second hand)

2-so we try system restore by restarting in MS-DOs (scanreg /restore)
and then we choose the date, so then it reboot itself and its freezzzeee.

Hi! I have many SOFTWARE programs that WORKED great on Windows 95, but they won't work on Windows XP. When I try to install them I get this error message:
"16 Bit WIndows Subsystem
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to TERMINATE the application."
I then have the option of choosing CLOSE or IGNORE. Whichever one I choose, I am not able to proceed to the installation. I have tried the program compatability wizard with every possible setting, and I always get the same error message. Is there any way I can run these programs on Windows XP (Home Edition) ?? :-/

I'm looking for a SIMPLE freeware/opensource video editor to do some basic video editing with. I've searched sourceforge but haven't come up with anything satisfying yet. One editor called "Jahshaka" seemed promising but it bogs down my 800MHz PIII and the controls aren't exactly intuative.

What I'm looking to do is simply remove the audio track from some .mpg movies and delete portions of the videos. It shouldn't be that difficult to find something to do those things. Any suggestions? Thanks.

by Video Edit Magic u can transform avi to mpeg formatFed, I took a look at that “list of lists” under the “video editing” subcategory. Only one seemed to be what I was looking for. It was http://virtualdub.org. I tried it out, but alas, it spazzed out and died. Don’t ask (I’ve never seen a 40 meg .mpg file turn into a 3.4 gig .avi file).

Thanks for the suggestions LegoLas. Video Edit Magic was nice, and did have the features I was looking for, but the fact that it was a crippleware version that added a tag to edited files and only allowed you to save to their proprietary file type prompted me to kick it in the bit bucket.

Back to the hunt. Of course, any further suggestions would be appreciated.

First, I was disgruntled at the software for needing way too much personal information to be filled in before it would even let me install the software. It wanted full mailing address, name, and e-mail address before it would continue. I wonder if they'll actually try to snail mail spam "1313 Mockingbird Lane, Transylvania Pennsylvania"? I'm also a bit suspicious of some of the "Madison Media" files that were installed on the machine. Windows Defender detected some system changes from some files that I think had the name "Madison" in them, but was unable to block them. I'm definitely going to give my system a thorough comb-through.

I winced but decided to try to do my simple video edits and then uninstall Sony Vegas. When I tried to open the first video file, a friendly box popped up informing me that the trial version did not support opening MPEG files, but if I would invest a modest sum of money into purchasing the full version I could edit MPEGs as much as I wanted. *sigh* I just don't feel like converting them to a readable file format and then reopening them in Vegas. Sorry.

Thanks for the effort though. Looks like this editing project will have to sit on the backburner for awhile. I thought there would have been more opensource video editing solutions out there. Anyone want to start a project on sourceforge with me?

I was doing HOMEWORK for Spanish 1 and I came across a problem. I have two Flash animations in my Powerpoint, but the sounds embedded in them play immediately, as in at the beginning of the slide show. This causes more than a little annoyance. I need to know soon: How can I stop the sounds until I reach that slide?

And no, computers do not have anything to do with the homework. If you right-click on the Flash animation are any Flash controls exposed?In preview mode, yes. However, the sounds are playing even THOUGH "play" is unchecked, and it's doing it in Slide Editing mode (my name for what you see when you first open PowerPoint)!

School is in ONE hour, I'm probably too late and will have to just mute it. But I should know for future reference.You may need to use Flash's API (via Visual Basic) to control how the Flash animation activates. Can't help you with that. I'm afraid. Not familiar with the Flash API, and very rarely use Powerpoint.

There might be a simpler answer. If you're happy to email the presentation to me, I'll be glad to take a look and see if I can figure it out. PM me, if so. Not that I have any great insight, but two heads might be better than one.

Unless someone else here can answer the question definitively...It probably cause by is own Flash coding
You might have to program the (.swf) it self that if you have the working document files (.flash)
I know a similar thing that happen before that is cause by this problem
What i did is put an mp3 file in a flash files, the play lenth of flash is shorter than is music play lenth, and i also didnot time control
so what happen is the flash file will play at the same time as the music WOULD start and when the file loops the music will STILL be playing.

i am using firefox 1.5 and USE a proxy typed in the connection settings and not any program,but when i use the proxy i see that a page takes more time to load than in dirrect connection,why is this and is there a way to overcome this problem

thanksThere are a few possible reasons for PROXIES causing a slow-down, but here are the main two:

1. Bottlenecks

Your connection to any point on the internet is only as fast as the slowest segment of the connection. Slowness can be for all sorts of reasons - overloaded routers, routers that "shape" traffic, i.e. only allow certain traffic through at a certain pace. The proxy itself may allocate limited bandwidth to each connection - or the proxy may be overloaded, which would be very likely if it's a public anonymous proxy.

2. Processing

Anonymous proxies (as opposed to CACHING proxies) usually do a bit of processing, stripping out certain BITS of data, inserting custom headers, footers, advertising, etc. Processing takes time, and slows down the experience for the end user.

As to your Gmail problem - it may be blocked by the proxy. Or the communication may be too complicated for the proxy to HANDLE. Either use a different proxy, or no proxy.thanks

Where and in what file format does Outlook store its content. I had thought it was a .pst file.

I saved a disk image before reseting my laptop back to factory state.

Now I cannot find the DATA in the disk image. I have reinstallled outlook and I cannot SEE WHRE it is STORING new data I put in.

PhilBType: dir /s /a *.pst at a cmd prompt. Is there a list of these files under a directory called Personal Folders?

Ok, I admit this is a weird one. I am manually deleting duplicate contact RECORDS from a CSV file in Excel. Ok, I was trying to REPLACE ALL in a specific column where I NEEDED no EXTRA spaces but instead of the one column it replaced everything!!! Without knowing, I saved the file...

So my question here is how do I get the spaces back where they're needed like in the Address Field, Company Name field, etc.? Is there a macro I can do? If so, how? Most of the fields are in title case... which helps show distinction.

HELP!!! It's due back to my client tomorrow!!!! A macro would have been helpful for deleting the duplicate records in the first place. Since it' too late for UNDO, you might be able to write a macro provided there is a way PROGRAMATICALLY distinguish title case. Check out the Excel help screens.

A co-worker (wink. wink. ) has deleted a folder and deleted it from the recycle BIN. Can this be restored? I tried the system restore but it didn't work.

ThreePutt1972The first most important thing to recover any deleted file is not to have any activity on the hard disk like copying/moving/deleting other files etc.

Then, you should set up any of the "data recovery" software and pray that your deleted file is not written upon by other files and is intact and you can recover it.

I was wondering if anybody could help me with a problem.I have an Emachine that has a DVD RW AND a CD ROM, both have WORKED fine for the past year,however last week every TIME I tried to play or RIP a CD on any of the media players on my computor they would TELL me to INSERT the CD which I already had.
