Mineral acids such as HNO_(3), HCl and H_(2)SO_(4) are widely used in industry and in the laboratory. In fact, applications of H_(2)SO_(4) in industry are so vast that it is actually called King of Chemicals. But unfortunately, in the recent past, many instances of acid attack by eve teasers and frustrated lovers on the faces of young girls have been reported in newspapers and shown on TV. This is a serious social evil and must be totally eliminated from the society. Read the above passage and answer the following questions : (i) Comment on the statement-should production/manufacture of acids be banned ? Give three valid reasons to justify. (ii) As a student of chemistry, what steps would you suggest to combat this social menace ? (iii) Recently 'Honourable Supreme Court of India' has suggest some measures to check such incidents of acid attack. Comment. |
|
Answer» Solution :(i) `HNO_(3)` is chiefly used in the manufacture of fertilizers, explosives, perfumes, dyes and medicines. Hydrochloric acid is used in the manufacture of metal chlorides, chlorine, `NH_(4)Cl` and glucose by hydrolysis of starch. It is also used in medicines, dyeing, calicoprinting, tanning and sugar industry. Sulphuric acid is chiefly used in the manufacture of fertilizers, explosives, dyes, drugs, paints, pigments, detergents, as an electrolyte in lead storage batteries and as a DRYING and dehyrating agent. In view of wide range of APPLICATIONS, the manufacture of acids cannot be banned. (ii) Acid attacks on YOUNG girls/women is a serious social evil. It has ruined the lives of many young girls/women. Therefore, a sense of awareness should be created in the minds of young boys against acid attacks by showing them skits, plays and dramas and by slogan writing at public places highlighting the damaging effects of acid attacks. (iii) To check acid attacks on young girls/women, Supreme court of India has suggested that acids should to sold only after proper verification of the identity of the buyer. But this is not enough. The convicted acid ATTACKERS should be boycotted, should not be OFFERED jobs in private and Government organisations and a sense of hatred may be created against them by sticking bills with their photographs at public places. |
