A tuning fork of frequency 220Hz produces sound waves of wavelength 1.5m in air at NTP. Calculate the increase in wavelength, when temperature of air in `27^(@)C`.

Answer» Here,`v=220Hz. lambda _(0)=1.5m.`
Speed of sound at N.T.P,
`v_(0)=vlambda_(0)=220xx1.5=330m//s`
Now, `T=27^(@)C=(27+273)K=300K`
If v is speed of sound in air at 300K. Then
`v=v_(0)sqrt((T)/(T_(0)))=330xxsqrt((300)/(273))`
`=330xx1.048=345.93m//s`
wavelength of sound waves at 300K.
`lambda=(upsilon)/(v)=(345.93)/(220)=1.57m`
`:.` Increase in wavelength `=lambda-lambda_(0)`
`=1.57-1.5=0.07m`
