Solve : Problem with colors?

Answer»

Well, I have searched this topic but I couldn't find anything so I decided to post it.

The Problem:

I usually run my computer with the High Color(16 bit) color setting and 1024 by 768 screen size but this morning when I turned on my computer it had the 16 color setting and 640 by 480 screen size. I thought that it was just a small thing and all I had to do was change it back to the normal settings, which I did but it doesn't WORK. It doesn't change at all and I've tried to set it back to the settings I want and it tells me that it needs to restart my computer for the settings to take effect but when it reboots its STILL the same. I've tried everything that I thought might be the problem but nothing. I ran spyware scanners and virus scanners to see if that might be the problem but it wasn't. I even tried to do system restore but that doesn't work either. I run on Windows ME.

Any help would be appreciated very much. Thanks in advance.Try reinstalling your video card drivers. They might have somehow got screwy, also check your monitor.

The first time it didn't do anything, but I'm going to try it again now.
Disable system restore...........and scan again for bugs......or from safemode do it.>>......f8 key on boot.......chose from the on screen list........safe mode and scan again.........or type dxdiag in the run box box.....and test graphics...........or just reload the video drivers........from the recovery disk.....options.....to try...

Do you have a plug in video card?BobB:

OK, lets check the status of your video card or controller:

1. Right-click My Computer
2. Select Properties from the menu
3. In System Properties, choose the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button
4. In Device Manager, click on Display Adapters to expand it
5. Right-click on the adapter (if there is more than one, then tell us!) and choose Properties from the menu
6. In the display adapter's properties, choose the General tab and look for Device Status
7. Write down what it says for Device Status and leave a reply here with the exact text

We will let you know where to proceed from there.

It says:

NVIDIA Vanta/Vanta LT

Device Status:
This device is either not PRESENT, not WORKING properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 24).

Try Upgrading the device drivers for this device.

This is also after re-installed the drivers twice.

Sorry for double-posting, but I fixed it. I'm not sure what the problem was but after uninstalling my old driver for the third time and installing a completly different one, it started working.

Thanks for all the help,

Solve : system restore taking up too much space?

Answer»

system restore seems to be taking up a lot of space on my computer. Can I do something about this?

also....

what can i DOWNLOAD to find and remove adware/spyware/trojans/virii?

and....

to how do I reinstall IE?Disabling it comes to mind, if you don't NEED it. What operating system and how much hard drive and free space do you have?

Have you done System Cleanup? DELETED unneccesary files?i am using windows xp, i have 18.62 GB and 5% free space so I cant defrag

i have deleted temporary internet folders and removed programs...nothing seems to free up space. I printed out the report from the disk defragmenter and i think a lot of it is system restore STUFF....

i am not very computer literate....please bear with me!

did you mean disabling system restore? how WOULD i do that?Well I went to Google.com and entered "disable system restore" and look what I got on the first pick: It took about 1 second.

Solve : BAT files.........?

Answer»

Hi,

A simple question. I read the batch file description but my question remained:

I want to create a BAT file that when i click on it then the following should happen:

Run from the command.com program, which is in the directory c:\windows\system32, another DOS program (called program1.exe) that is in the directory c:\folder1\folder2 for example?

How i can do that? What commands do i have to write inside the bat file.......?

Because now i have to go to the c:\windows\system32, go to command.com and type the whole c:\folder1\folder2 and then type program1.exe.
Not very convenient................:-)

Thanks.......George:

A batch file is essentially a batch of DOS commands. Whatever you can type at the command prompt, you can type in a batch file. Windows will execute the commands one at a time in the order they appear in the file. Use Notepad, type each command on a separate LINE, pressing the Enter key after each command. Save the file as:

filename.bat

Make sure you choose to save as All Files and then add the .bat extension to the file name.

Doc A batch file is essentially a batch of DOS commands.

Oh REALLY? So i can just write:
START /M "C:\folder1\folder2\program.exe"

Or anything else.
Program1.exe is a DOS program. Does it MATTER?No, but you may, for example, put this in a batch file:

start /max c:\windows\notepad.exe

And save it to the desktop with a .bat extension. Double-clicking this batch file on the desktop would start Notepad maximized.

For the correct parameters to use with the START command, type this at the command prompt:

START /?

Best regards,
DocBTW: You may EVEN use a batch file to launch a shortcut. Just put a .LNK after the shortcut's name in the batch file command.

Solve : SP2 install problems?

Answer»

I can't seem to get SP2 stuffed into this machine, probably due to a software conflict.
When I do the install (4 times now) windows won't load. I know that it is in there somewhere because it starts up nice in safe mode. I don't get a SPECIFIC error MESSAGE, only NOTIFICATION that windows has FAILED to load.
I have taken the machine in to let a techy try his hand at it, but he had no more luck than I did. He and I have both done the required updating of drivers.
The problem computer is an HP Pavilion, with a scanner, Printer, and a USB hard drive attached.
Anyone heard of this problem? I assume that what I need is tips on how to isolate the problem, assuming that it is a software conflict.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
DaveIf the USB hard drive is not eseential (some kind of backup solution?) I would physically remove it, the scanner and the printer if they are USB devices. Do a system restore to get back to a safe point and start again.

Thanks for replying so soon. I'm embarrassed to say that I forgot to mention that all 4 attempts to install were done with no peripherals attached except monitor, keyboard and mouse.
I think the install was ok, because in safe mode windows seems to be cool. It just fails to load in normal mode, which is why (In all my vast wisdom) I thought that it might be software related. I could just delete all the user installed software and try again, but as you can imagine that is a last resort.
Any other ideas? What about the sytem restore idea - to a point in time when this did not happen? Thanks again!!
I have done a system restore after each install to get back to an operating state. SP2 is not on my computer at this moment. I know I will have to re-install a 5th time in order to troubleshoot this, but I don't know how to troubleshoot. My attempts to do this have been going on since SP2 was introduced. :-/Are you downlaoading SP2 or installing from CD? Microsoft will send it to you for free - no shipping either, or you can download it, burn it to CD and go from there.
I'm using the CD from Microsoft the last 3 attempts, because the first attempt was a downloaded copy, and it failed.well, I wouldn't spend too much time on this personally. I would back up important stuff and then reinstall the operating system after a good format of the hard drive.Strange enough, that's the same advice I got from the techy at CompUsa when he worked on it. Seems to be a problem with HP's proprietary software.
Thank you sincerely for your efforts!

Solve : MSPAINT not able to open/save JPG, GIF (XP SP2)?

Answer»

Hello! My name is Apoorva. I am using WINDOWS XP SP2. Now, I am having a PROBLEM with my MSPAINT. I am not able to open any jpg or gif file in MSPAINT as it gives me an ERROR message :
"This is not a valid bitmap file......"
Also, I am not able to Export as jpg and gif from MSPAINT. In other words, when I click on the DROP down menu next to Save As Type,
neither Jpeg nor Gif is listed and also PNG and TIFF is not listed.
So, now I would like to know,

2. Where has jpg, gif, ong, tiff disappeared in the MSPAINT in Save As Type menu?
Please help...

No. I have not yet tried out that option. But, take for instance, I am taking a screenshot and then going into MSPAINT and pasting it. Then, I click on File - Save and in the Save As Type menu, their is no JPEG, GIF, PNG, TIFF options given. In other words, they have all disappeared.

Also, when I try to open jpg file, it says: "This is not a valid bitmap file, or it has a format which is not currently supported by paint"

Now, neither I am able to open jpg file in MSPAINT nor am I able to save in jpg format from MSPAINT.

So, what to do?

1. Find a jpeg file
2. Right-click on the file (not a shortcut to the file) and choose Properties
3. In the jpeg properties dialog box, select the General tab
4. Next to Opens With, click the Change button; the Open With dialog box appears
5. Choose Paint from the LIST in the Open With dialog box and click OK
6. Click Apply and OK in the jpeg properties dialog box

From now on, mspaint.exe will open any jpeg file that you double click. Do the same for GIF image files.

Solve : COPY COMMAND in DOS?

Answer»

Hi guys during my windows xp setup I recieved an error which stated "Setup cannot access the CD containing Windows XP INSTALLATION files. Then it goes on to say copy windows xp installation files to your harddrive. I forgot what the command in DOS was to do this does anyone know?
If your CD cannot be read, then you have to solve this issue first before any THING else matters.
Can you see the CD drive? Can you do a dir command and see the files?

Zeal:

For any command in DOS or the Windows XP command line, just type the command and /? and press Enter to see all the correct parameters. Example:

C:\>copy /?
Copies one or more files to another location.

COPY [/D] [/V] [/N] [/Y | /-Y] [/Z] [/A | /B ] source [/A | /B]
    [+ source [/A | /B] [+ ...]] [destination [/A | /B]]

source Specifies the file or files to be copied.
/A Indicates an ASCII text file.
/B Indicates a binary file.
/D Allow the destination file to be created decrypted
destination Specifies the directory and/or filename for the new file(s).
/V Verifies that new files are written correctly.
/N Uses short filename, if available, when copying a file with a
              non-8dot3 name.
/Y Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
              existing destination file.
/-Y Causes prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
              existing destination file.
/Z Copies networked files in restartable mode.

The switch /Y may be PRESET in the COPYCMD environment variable.
This may be overridden with /-Y on the command line. Default is
to prompt on overwrites unless COPY command is being executed from
within a batch script.

To append files, specify a single file for destination, but multiple files
for source (using wildcards or file1+file2+file3 format).

======================================

XCOPY will copy more than one file at a time, but it is not available from the Windows XP Recovery Console (go figure). If you have a previous operating system that you are trying to update to Windows XP, XCOPY is the command to use to copy the entire i386 folder from the CD to your hard drive.

Blessings to you,
DocBTW: To see all the COMMANDS available, just type HELP and press Enter.

Solve : Cannot delete .mp3 files?

Answer»

Ability to delete/edit .mp3 files intermitent.

Files that cannot be DELETED often can be deleted after re-boot.

Error message says "FILE is use by other process"

If I kill MS Explorer I can sometimes delete the file with ANOTHER file manager, but not always.

I THINK is may be happening with other types of files. It's mainly .mp3 files I edit and delete.
Google for KillBox, it will fix it for you.Check for the RELATED running processes from the Task Manager.

Now you will be able to delete them.

Solve : Need to get Outlook Express icon on quick launch?

How can I get the Outlook Express icon on the launch bar by the "Start" box on the bottom left of screen?

This particular computer has the "Microsoft Outlook" icon there now and I want it gone, but don't know if I should delete it. Its also in the "Programs" column as well.

To open Outlook Express now, I have to go to "Programs" and open it.

Thanks. You could try MAKING Outlook Express the default mail handler in tools>options. If that doesn't WORK you could right click on the Outlook Express .EXE file & send a shortcut to the desktop then DRAG it down.
"%ProgramFiles%\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"Fordtruckmaniac....Hummm ....let's see .......click on start .....then all programs ......then right click on Outlook Express .........select "send to"......then "Desktop create shortcut"
Now click on the outlook express icon ..........when it opens you should get a message saying something like ......Outlook express is not currently your default mail service ....would you like to make it the default now. ANSWER yes ........ Now go and delete the Outlook icon thats there now ....leave outlook in the list of programs ........you may have to create your Email account in outlook express as well ...( use the same settings as are being used in Outlook.)
I think that should do it .

I tried the suggestions and and got it.

I just left "Outlook" in "Programs".

Solve : Connecting a Windows XP Cmptr to a Wndws NT net?

Answer»

Recently I purchased a computer with Windows XP to replace my 2 office COMPUTERS. The 2 office computers operate with Windows NT 4.0; one is the main computer and the other the work station.

I want to copy the information that is on the 2 computers onto DVD-cds using the new computer. I have tried connecting to the network without sucess so far. I have tried connecting to the hub and tried a DIRECT connection to the main computer.

Are Windows XP and Windows NT compatible; can they talk to each other? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Quote

1. I have tried connecting to the network without sucess so far. I have tried connecting to the hub and tried a direct connection to the main computer.

2. Are Windows XP and Windows NT compatible; can they talk to each other?
...

1. Need more INFO.
2. Yes and yes. WinXP is WinNT 5.1
Thanks for the response.

Here's some info:

New Computer:
Gateway 835 GM Pentium D
Windows XP - Media Center Edition V 5.1

Main Computer on Network:
Compaq Prosignia 200
x86 Family Model 2 Stepping 12
AT/AT Compatible
Windows NT V 4.0

w/Compaq Proliant Storage System F1
(has 3 hard drives, 4.3 gb each)

Link Builder 3 Com 3C16170 TP/12 Hub

The network system dates from 1997 or so.

I have connect the cable form the ethernet port of the new cable to the hub. Use the New Connection Wizard on the new computer which then took me to hte Network SETUP Wizard to establish a new connection to the network using a VPN. This creates a new icon in the Network Connection window. I have click this and get the following error message:

Error 800
Unable to establish the VPN connection. The VPN server may be unreachable or security parameters may not be configured properly for this connection.

I have tried reconfiguring the connection, putting in the old compurters IP address and domain and both. Still no connection.

When the error message comes up it says it will "redail" in so many seconds. Why is it trying to connect by dialing? The existing workstation just connects to the domain of the main computer (no dialing that I know of).

I just want to connect to the old system, copy that data onto DVD disk and then the old system is off to charity.

Any help you can give is appreciated.
Well are the files SHARED? They have to be shared in order for you to access them. Also make sure your firewall allows connection to both computers.

Solve : ME boot disk?

Answer»

Ok, this is to do woth my other post, so I was wondering if anyone could tell me what programs are on a windows ME boot disk..... because of major computer errors ill have to download the files one by one and insert them onto a floppy one by one. So can anyone give me a list of whats needed on a windows ME disk? thanks.Wow - I didn't even know that was possible.

Read your other post and seems your troubles are solved so why don't you download an ME bootdisk from Bootdisk.com. It is a self EXTRACTING .exe file and, when you click on it, it will CREATE a floppy bootdisk for you. If you then want to see what's on an ME bootdisk just open it.

However I did it for you 'cos that's what you asked for and here's the resulting list:

IO.SYS
AUTOEXEC.BAT
MEM.EXE
SCANREG.EXE
README.TXT
FINDRAMD.EXE
FIXIT.BAT
LABEL.EXE
MOVE.EXE
XCOPY32.EXE
XCOPY.EXE
XCOPY32.MOD
DELTREE.EXE
FLASHPT.SYS
EXTRACT.EXE
FDISK.EXE
COMMAND.COM
HIMEM.SYS
CD4.SYS
CD3.SYS
CONFIG.SYS
HIBINV.EXE
EDIT.COM
DISPLAY.SYS
COUNTRY.SYS
MODE.COM
MSDOS.SYS
CHKDSK.EXE
DEBUG.EXE
ATTRIB.EXE
EXT.EXE
FORMAT.COM
HELP.BAT
MSCDEX.EXE
SCANDISK.EXE
SCANDISK.INI
SYS.COM
CD2.SYS
CD1.SYS

Good luck.....

You can download a Windows ME bootdisk image file from here BOOTDISK ARCHIVE and use these DOS command reference pages DOS COMMANDS

Just double-click on the image file and insert a blank formatted floppy in the A: drive when prompted to do so.

This will put all of the needed files onto the floppy.

Are the files in your EBD folder damaged?

Edit: Just read your other post. Still, you could always use another computer.Mac is also right of course Bootdisk Archive is a mirror SITE for Bootdisk.com. The method of creating a floppy bootdisk is identical

Again - good luck

Solve : Registry keys for Services?

Answer»

Hi,

I have some services that have become corrupted or the program has got uninstalled.

Somehow the service name is still there in the Services.
How do i remove them.vibhor_agarwalin...exactly what is it your trying to do ?
Edit your registry?

dl65 Yes,

I has 2-3 programs which i uninstalled.
But somehow their entries are still dangling in the services control APPLET.

I think the only way to remove them is to edit the registry.
But i am unable to find that key.vibhor_agarwalin.....Do you know the name of the programs that you deleted ?
If you do ....open the registry editor and in the search box ....enter the name and click on find next .

dl65 Autoruns>Services
http://www.sysinternals.comYes i have tried that.
It keeps the name in registry in some cryptic form.
So a search isn't effective.

I will get back to you Fed after than link.

ThanksFirst open regedit as suggested. For your first search use the name of the program and search. Delete the key/string that COMES up.
Then hit F3 to continue the same search. Again delete any keys/strings that come up.
You might have to hit F3 and delete any number of times depending on the program and how invasive it is. Continue this until regedit notifies you that it has finished searching thru the registry.
Then you might also have to do this with the author/and or Company name of the SOFTWARE you are removing.

patio. Always back up reg......before playing with it........what are you trying to remove in the reg......playing with fire some people get burnt?I have tried all the options.

It has kept in some cryptic form like nos.
I have searched with name, Company, etc.

No result.Haven't you fixed this YET? Get with it vibhor.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services
Get Autoruns, no more help for you on this. That's the main problem.

It's not there. What's not where? The name of that service in that registry key.Autoruns.... did you?Autoruns simply starts that service at startup.

That service can't be started because its corrupted.

The name only is left in services applet.

Solve : Is is safe to uninstall MS hotfixes??

Solve : Microsoft Works Word?

Answer»

Well, I was on page 4 of my project, and an error message CAME up and well, the rest is history I didn't save it, but i was wondering if their was anyway to get back what I was typing?? =\ thankshttp://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HP051891691033.aspx

You might need to open the recovery file yourself When the AutoRecover feature is turned on, Word typically opens recovery files when you restart Word after a power failure or similar problem. If for some reason Word did not open the recovery file, you can open it. By default, the recovery file is located in the DOCUMENTS and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Word folder. If you changed the location for recovery files, CHECK the new location on the File Locations tab (Tools menu, Options command).

Word might not have created the recovery file yet By default, the recovery file is created 10 minutes after you open the document. If Word or your computer stops responding before the recovery file is created, you cannot automatically recover your changes. To have AutoRecover save your changes more FREQUENTLY, you can change the interval at which the recovery file is saved.

You might have closed the recovery file without saving it When you close a recovery file without saving it, the recovery file is deleted. There is no way to recover unsaved changes after the recovery file has been closed.

You might have deleted the recovery file Recovery files have an .asd extension. If you delete the recovery file, you cannot automatically recover your changes.

The document might be a master document Word can create recovery files for individual subdocuments, but it cannot create a recovery file for a master document.

Were you using the Visual Basic Editor to change a macro? AutoRecover creates a recovery file only for a document that has been modified during the current SESSION. If your only changes are in the Microsoft Visual Basic Editor while you have a document open in Word, Word cannot recognize that the document has been modified. To have Word create a recovery file that includes changes to macros edited in Visual Basic Editor, make a change in the Word document itself (for example, add and delete a paragraph return).

Try using a straightened paper-clip (You'll find one in Word I believe)

Gently push it into the small hole in the front of the CD drive and gently pull on the drawer when it has opened far enough.

It is easier with a Proto #47 1/4 x 1/16th pin punch (Made in the USA) from your local hardware store.

If they have a 3/64" punch take them both.Yep, Mac is right.

However, on a few systems, there is no hole with an eject button on the CD-ROM drive, so you cannot manually open the tray this way.

DocIf there is no hole in the physical CD drive, try clicking on "My COMPUTER", right click on the CD drive in question and choosing "Eject".

If that fails, please repost. I can post a script that will eject the drawer.

Let us know. How old is the drive? Is there a chance it is just deceased?

Hi Sidewinder and all others - thanks for your great advice.
Sidewinder- I have tried your instructions with the eject thing but to no luck. :-/
I look forward to the "script" you can send me.
I am pretty sure the drawer is not "dead" It is about a YEAR old and not used alot.
Like I stated before,, the people at Dell ate able to talk me through the DOS based instruction in set up.
I cannot bear to sit on the phone for 30-60 mins waiting for support.
I look forward to you reply
AlannaAs promised, here is the script. Reading over the the last few posts, I uncertain whether a software solution will work.

Code: [Select]
Set WMP = CreateObject("WMPlayer.ocx")
Set colCDROMS = WMP.CDROMCollection

If colCDROMS.Count > -1 Then
     For i = 0 to colCDROMS.Count - 1
           colCDROMS.Item(i).Eject
     Next
End If

Cut and paste the above code into an editor (notepad will do). Save the script with a .VBS extension. Open a command window and navigate to the directory where you saved the script. Type: scriptname.vbs to run the script.

If the script does not work, bring in the crowbar er, paperclip. :)Thanks again- I have never done anything like this but I am amazed that I was able to figure out as much as I have thus far!! I saved the script to my desk top and right clicked the icon to open the "command window" I can only see the command window for a milla second and then it dissappears. Where does it go?? How do I keep it open??
I really appreciate you helping me. I look forward to hearing from you again..... I owe you big time.
Alanna If the script is on your desktop, there is no need to use a command window, just DOUBLE click the icon. The flash you saw is just the length of time it takes the script to run.

Does this problem occur after doing something else? It may be a previous program never RELEASED the drive. Possibly a reboot would help. If you can, try to use the CD button to open the drive during the reboot.

Just a thought. [[glb][/glb]Hey Sidewinder[glb][/glb]

It worked!! Thanks soooooooooooooo much. Now the stupid software I am trying to use is giving me a hard time. I think it is a US to Canadian thing.
I notice the time in your posting is different then here. Where are you located??
HOpe to hear from you again
Alanna Martha,

I'm glad the drawer finally popped open, although I'm uncertain if the solution was the script or a reboot. In any case I doubt it's a US-Canadian thing. Bill Gates has single-handily managed to frustrate PC users worldwide.

PS. Don't tell anyone else but I'm located in New York.

Solve : Saving Outlook Files as .TXT?

Answer»

Our OFFICE likes to keep a record of emails as text in our job folders on the server for future reference. However when I select save as and save it as text, any reference to any attachment is gone. I don't want to keep the attachment, but just some sort of line that says that there was one, and what it was. Any help is MUCH appreciated.

ThanksI tried saving one of my e-mails. I couldn't save it as a txt FILE but I could save it ANYWHERE on my computer I wanted to. It re-opened exactly LIKE an e-mail. It shouldn't be much of problem to save them in your job folders on your server. I don't know if this helps.Check your last line.

Solve : autoexec.bat and config.sys probs.?

Answer»

Greetings.

I'm hoping that another guru out there can help me with a problem that I've repeatedly encountered. What happened was that I tried to install a CD-RW program so I COULD burn CDs. (InCD from Nero) However, after I RESTARTED my computer, it freezes during the startup.

I ran MSCONFIG to do a selective startup in the safe mode, and recieved a message that the autoexec.bat and config.sys files had environmental VARIABLES, and they would be moved to windows registry. I'm not completely sure I know what this means. What I do think is that the InCD software somehow wrote some incoherent files to these programs, and now my computer won't work.

My system is a Windows Millenium.

Please help if you can! oh YEAH. SINCE I'm not a member, if you have an answer that will help, email me! ([email protected])

Solve : Users are gone!?

Answer»

HI all,
I'm trying to help a friend here...
XP Home seems to load up fine on his HP laptop, but there are no users at
the login screen.
CTRL+ALT+DEL gets the NT style name and password prompt, but the passwords
aren't accepted for the user or administrator (no matter what I set it to in
setup).
I've tried safe mode(s), same ISSUE.
I can't start the system recovery because it asks for the admin password,
and doesn't accept it (separate issue maybe?).
Any suggestions?
What happened prior to this problem? History is both interesting AND helpful!

Sorry, don't have much history. It was apparently fine the night before, and at startup the next morning this happened....no downloads the night before or anything.HP support is recommending REMOVING the hard drive, backing it up and reinstalling windows xp.
I'd at least like to find out why this happened, though as you stated, without a history it's very difficult.
If ANYONE has any suggestions, I'd appreciate whatever you've got.

Thanks. Is this formatted with NTFS or FAT32? Can you boot with a Win98 boot DISK? (www.bootdisk.com if you don't have one)

Is there a FLOPPY drive? A CDRW? I ask in case there is data on there you may be able to get back.should be NTFS - how to check? I'm also at home now, so I can't check...

has both floppy and cd drives.

I don't know if it will boot with a '98 cd....If it will boot with a Win98 boot disk it is FAT32 and you will be able toaccess data to get it off if needed. If NTFS (if drive greater than 32 gig, this is likely) you will probably be SOL and just have to reformat and reinstall the operating system. I wasn;t clear if there was data on there you needed.

Solve : Right Click Menus?

Answer»

I used to have the option to scan files with NORTONS Anti-Virus when I right clicked on them. Recently I had problems with a virus and lots of spyware, and I got rid of it all. Although, now I do not seem to have the option to scan my files with Nortons by right clicking on it and selecting that option. I was wonder if there was a way I could get it back without having to uninstall and reinstall Nortons entirely.

On another note, is there a way to add commands or remove options? Thanks in advance for any help offered.I'm not convinced your system is fine now. Have you tried all of the Raptor Tips for a clean system? If so, then system restore may be a next step, from safe mode.

As for question # 2 - no, if I read your question correctly. Could you elaborate?Oh the system is most definately clean. What I think happened was during the cleaning, I deleted a key I was not supposed to. Nortons works just fine now, as does EVERYTHING else. I also used Hijackthis, and think I might have deleted it via that program, and the backups folder is empty.

What I really need help with is how to add it back. Because the registry is very big, and something I am not entirely comfortable with yet when it comes to adding entries. I really would not know how to set the value.I forgot to elaborate on question 2. Well there is nothing specific at the moment I wish to add, but there seems to be an ABUNDANCE of garbage on the right click menu I could certainly do without. Like adding to zip, and rar. I never use those options. Quote

These could have been added by another program. A file manager program or some other utility come to mind. Anything like that on there? Quote

I would suggest an uninstall and reinstall. Is this a full copy or some kind of timed trial? That would be the only possible snafu. If it is a full copy I would immediately do that.
Yeah when you install WinZip or WinRar, they got added. I don't think there is a way not to have them added during their installations. I know there are programs out there like Context Edit and similar offerings, but I wanted to basically know if there was an easy way to remove the commands via registry. I am just not sure where to look.

I have the full copy of 2005 Systemworks. I would prefer not to have to uninstall the entire thing. What I am trying to learn is how to re-add whatever registry key has been deleted/corrupted. Just in case I ever do this again, it would be a nice thing to know. I see this entry in the registry, I assume it or another is the key related to my problem.

Nope, if you take the programs you get the "consequences". I don't think this is fixable in the way you want. How about the other ISSUE?
Well there are some programs out there that help edit the menus but none that I have found would let me re-add the AntiVirus scanning. So I figured there might be somebody that knows how to add it via the Registry.Did you uninstall Norton, reboot and then install again? Not yet. Looking for another way. Downloading all them updates at the moment just isn't all that appealing to me right now. I might do all that before I go to bed as a last resort. You MUST be on dialup.

Overnight is good. Get back to us though, OK?Alright, thanks for the tries though. I will be checking back in case anyone pops on with a way to do it via registry or some other trick. The Zip menu items can be removed from within the Zip program.

Solve : CSLID? deleted some registry...?

Answer»

OK. so i got a virus & i DELETED half of it (it was pretty weak) through the registry on my computer, which doesn't have registry mechanic like the one downstairs does.
unfortunately, i deleted an extra thing (IDIOT, i know). CSLID or something? anyways...now, my computer starts up, but you know the windows loading screen, the blue one before it loads & SHOWS the user accounts? it doesn't get past that at all.
i even tried to log into my windows account from the computer downstairs through some connection my dad has, but it also shows the same blue sn. this is REALLY bugging me, because i figure i might be able to restore the registry back to the date that i want (it says somewhere on here that i can do it) but it won't even show the user accounts...sometimes it doesn't even load past that, it doesn't even show the red Shut Down button. HELP!

-bridget(ps) this is NOT because of the virus...this is because of my own stupidity & me deleting something from the registry, which i'm guessing was as vital as COMMAND, haha. the thing is is that when i deleted it, i was still using the computer after that, it was just running really slow (i still hadn't gotten the rest of the virus), but then i couldn't open anything or tinker with anything, other than USE mozilla or something. so *censored*? :-/ Hold down the f8 key on boot and chose last good from the on-screen list......using the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate ........>well now youve done it !!!
messing AROUND in the registry .... you were your own best virus !
you now need to reinstall your operating system to get all the files back that you have deleted .Can't be fixed outside of a format and reinstall. Do learn from this mistake.

Solve : Having problems with start up?

Answer»

As I recall, after we changed the hard drive (from the old 40gig to the new 80gig) and finally bought a brand spanking new XP program and installed it on the new hard drive, it seemed to work okay. Then we put the old 'office' program on it and, well, here we are. :-/

(oh, ANOTHER note here, I just remembered: when the old 40gig was still in the machine and it was our main computer, we got majorly spammed. I don't know if that would affect it either way, but there you are.)If I were you I'd start again. (You should be an expert by now)

Download the protection listed at the bottom of this post.

Fresh install of XP without connecting to the net.

Install the downloaded protection.

Connect to the net & update the installed protection.

Update XP.

Play with XP until you are sure it's 100% OK.

Install 'Office' and see what happens then.
(If it SCREWS up you can always un-install it)

Hopester thanks for the article, but all the right boxes are checked to show pictures. Don't know about any software. Why would XP need additional software? Like I said,I did not have this problem with 98. Any other suggestions? Something a LITTLE simpler. Try this:

Open up Internet Explorer.

Click on Tools.
Click on Internet Options.
Click on the Advanced tab.
Click Restore Defaults.

If this doesn't work, then we know for sure that the problem lies elsewhere, and we can troubleshoot from there.I restored the defaults. No different. I should tell you, this only happens on a few sites. JoAnns and Kohls,Sierra Trading Post,to name a few.Only get one or two pictures. On other craft sites, that have alot of small pics, the pictures LOAD ok.

Solve : question on windows security?

Answer»

Hi,

I've got another question here. I am not sure if i can do this with WINDOWS XP Pro.

What i'd like to do is to implement a login network which means USERS need to enter username and password to be ABLE to access to files.

What HAPPENS on my network is i have a fileserver computer( Windows XP Pro) and it's got some shared folders which anyone once on the network be able to access them without asking for anything.

Is there a way that i can set up username and password with windows XP Pro so that when anyone login to the network and like to access the shared folders on the fileserver need a password in order to access it.

Thank you in advance. If the drive the folder is located on is formatted NTFS, you have complete control who can access it. You can also control it on FAT32 drives via Sharing.

Thanks!Forgot to mention that I am using Windows XP professional. Thanks!Their accounts may not be ABLE to see them. Did you install Office for all users? When you install a program it generally asks you whether you want to install for all the users or for the current user.

So ... what did you do.

We have had these computers for two YEARS, and this is the first year I have had this PROBLEM. Even when I am logged on as an administrator I cannot see the programs.

maybe the users disabled them.........type msconfig in the run BOX and check?startup folders.

Thanks in advance for looking into this.I wouldn't worry about slipstreaming anything. Just load SP2 after WinXP and BEFORE you connect to the internet.Does it pause in safe MODE?Thanks for the installation tips, LOOKS like I might be trying that again.

As for pausing in safe mode, not that I KNOW of. I haven't had it running very long in safe mode, so due to the random nature of the pausing I couldn't say for sure. It went a whole day the other day without pausing once, thought I'd CRACKED it, then it started again next day

Solve : Windows XP Major And Maybe Complicated Problem?

Answer»

Recently, a password was put on my Admin account in Windows XP. Every time I attempted to load the Firefox program, yesterday, I got an error MESSAGE. So, I decided to reboot. When I rebooted, I got an error message at the password screen that Windows XP needed to run CHKDSK again, so I rebooted again.

When it came back to the password screen, it seemed to be very large, like zoomed in, and the keyboard and mouse do not work. They work as the computer is loading, and I can get into the BIOS and whatnot, but once Windows pops up, it's all over. So I can't even log into my account in order to fix whatever problems I have. I'm FORCED to ask this question from a different computer.

Any help?Maybe whomever put the password on your computer could advise what they have done? That would sure make it easier to solve.

Was it a drive by password changer?

<--- Agrees with GX1.

Is there any other user account for this computer, or just your user account? If there is more than one user account, is the other account an administrator account?

Is this Windows XP HOME Edition or Professional?

I put the password on the account.

There is only one account, the Admin account.

It's Windows XP Professional.

Why would the mouse and keyboard stop responding, though? So now you put the password on there , and you forgot it or it doesn't work? Did you try the old one? Can you not go through the same steps to reset it?

-----------Puzzled in PaducahCan you start in safe mode?I cannot put the password in at all because the keyboard does not respond. I cannot type. Period. I do know the password, but it doesn't help me at all when I can't put it in.

I attempted to go to Safe Mode, but there's still a password screen, and the keyboard and mouse still won't respond. Is there aproblem in the BIOS that will not let you access USB devices (if that's what you are USING)? or the PS/2 ports? What ELSE has changed. I find it hard to believe that nothing unusal preceeded this.Like I said, there was an error message that popped up, both before my initial reboot, and after my first reboot.

I'll check the BIOS once I get home, but what else should I look for?

I dunno why the stuff would shut down only when Windows starts, though. I can still use the keyboard to get to the BIOS screen and the mouse light is still on. Quote

Is this with a hard-wired mouse and keyboard? If not, how are the mouse and keyboard powered?
Hard-wired? They're plugged into the computer and are powered by it.PS-2 or USB?My mouse is USB and my keyboard is ps-2.Can you start with a boot disk? And maybe a PS/2 mouse as well.

Solve : trouble with search?

Answer»

If I search for a file, find it, select it, right click and choose open target folder another search box opens.
If in windows explorer I double click on a folder in the right hand pane, again a search box opens insteard of the folder contents being displayed.
I tried to back up my emails, I copied the target folder, clicked start, run, pasted the target folder into the box, clicked OK and another search box opened.

How can I stop this happening? I have tried fixing the problem by inserting th windows disc and using the scannow to fix the problem, but no joy.

I am running Windows XP and the probelm exists in both user accountsHold down the f8 key on boot up ......chose last good config from the on screen listGo to
Tools->Folder Options->File Types

Then under Folder make explore the default one.
I think its set to search or something.Tried Tools->Folder Options->File Types but could not find "make explore" the default. Tried the advanced tab but this only seems to open the folder with an application!

You got something wrong.

There should be a "explore" or something similar.
Just make that one the default.

Also tell which one is the default in yours. In windows explorer I clicked on tools - folder options in the folder options window I highlight folder click advance, there is one action listed "Find". I click on new and type in explore, if I click OK it asks which application to perform this action with. Not knowing what to use I clicked cancel, but explore is now displayed in the actions pane. I can click on set default, but I still get the seach box as before.

Where am I going wrong?Echo on>>>....Hold down the f8 key on boot up ......chose last good config from the on screen listTried that didn't work, tried SYSTEM restore but this refuses to work (thinking about getting Norton Go back, but this wont help me resolve this problem).OK Guys, I have found out that the reason that search COMPANION opens when I double click a folder, there is an incorrect value in the registry. I have to go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Shell

From here I click modify on the edit menu and type None in the value data box. Then click OK

Great only TROUBLE is that I can get to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory but there is no shell listed!

Any ideas? How do you know the norton go-back will not fixit.....

And how the the old winxpthe anti crash o/s.....cough!

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmI know as Norton Go Back will be installed after the problem has happened it cannot take the system back to an earlier time. I am just considering it as a future option. I have heard MANY people SAY that window restore is not up to the job and it can make the problem worse. Many of my friends have just swithed it off as it is such a waste of space!!!!!!After much deliberation I reformatted my HD and did a fresh reinstall.
Everthing is working OK, thanks for all of the help Guys.Phew,

The sure-shot but the worst option.

Solve : comp keeps restarting?

Answer»

hey guys need some help, I just installed Kaspersky AV and it REQUIRED RESTART which is normal. When I booted up again, as I got to the desktop it just restarted again. I tried a system restore but no luck. Help?Has this happened just once? If so reboot it again. If not delete the AV, if you think that is the culprit, start in safe mode, and go back with system restore.Kaan:

After the BIOS displays the memory and hardware check, and before the Windows SPLASH screen, press the F8 key. When you see the Windows boot options menu, choose Last Known Good Configuration.

Once you get to the desktop, USE the Add and Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel to uninstall Kaspersky, as GX1 advised.

Solve : No sound???

Answer»

You only need to double click on the .exe file.
I would first USE Everest to confirm the sound card.
http://www.lavalys.com/ Quote

The file is .exe. Not a driver? What should the suffix be? I am very amatuer when it comes to this stuff.

The .exe is an executeable. Meaning that it will do all the work for you once you double click.

Before you double click, like Fed SAID, VERIFY that you have downloaded the correct drivers. The point then is that the sound must be disabled in the BIOS if that is an option. Yes that sounds like a creative card by your description.Everest will tell you which sound device is active. What would be compatible with the Harman/Kardon? I could not understand any of the above suggestions. Maybe I have just been sitting here too long. I've been trying to troubleshoot from the PC and nothing seems to work. It LOOKS like you just found a SIMILAR topic to your problem and jumped in here. You should really post a anew topic to get prompt response, and don't forget to specify your equipment.

Harmon Karden makes speakers, not soundcards.

If you cannot get sound either your sound card is not configured correctly, WIndows settings have the sound muted, or your speakers are not plugged in correctly or turned on.

Solve : Outlook ????

I have my main e-mail account, my roomate uses the same main account only with a different e-mail address. Is there a way for his e-mail to be private and not all get dumped into the same main inbox???I OFFER two variants:
1. Create new Identity from File menu Identities and ADD New Identity. Then you 'll have fully private windows even. You should specify same account propertie for him also except email and password information.

2. If not Create new folde under Inbox and name it differently. Then from Tools menu Message rules and MAILS create new rule that certain emails belonging to your friend would go that folder. Quote

Or you could install Thunderbird and let him use that as HIS e-mail client. Everything stays separate, and no problems if that switch identity feature gets screwed up and you can't access one of your ACCOUNTS. I've seen that happen.

Solve : Is there something to the effect of Scandisk on XP?

Answer»

Just curious if there was something to the effect fo SCANDISK on windows XP Pro?

Thanks.Windows Explorer>Right Click>Properties>Tools
works in w2k so xp is probably the same.Yes there is but it is called CheckDisk.

Couple of ways of RUNNING it.

Right-click any drive icon and open the Properties then click on Tools, Check Errors, Check now... , and put a couple of checkmarks in then click on OK.

It will ask if you want to schedule chkdsk to run on the NEXT start-up so just answer Yes.

The second is from the command line...

Start, Run and type - cmd - in the window and press Enter, then type - chkdsk - as SHOWN in the screenshot...

If you type - chkdsk /? - you will see the ENTIRE range of parameters which can be used with checkdisk.

In Help and Supprt search for - chkdsk - for more information.

Thank you for the reply.

I was curious, as I run it frequently on my other computer with ME. I did not see scandisk on the one with XP.

I assume it does not hurt to run CheckDisk often on the XP system either?

Thanks.Just make sure that there is plenty of free-space (over 15%) I've just had one guy reduce his entire D: drive to .chk files by only having 1 GB of free-space on a 60 GB drive.

I set a minimum free-space of 20 % on storage drives and 30% on the OS drive.
