listribution. Ps-3/coVhat is Soil Erosiop? Explain the causes of soil erosion and methods ofonservation of soilIP-

Answer»

Soil erosionis the displacement of the upper layer of soil, one form ofsoil degradation. This natural process is caused by the dynamic activity of erosive agents, that is, water, ice (glaciers), snow, air (wind), plants, animals, and humans. In accordance with these agents, erosion is sometimes divided into water erosion, glacial erosion, snow erosion, wind (aeolean) erosion, zoogenic erosion, and anthropogenic erosion.Soil erosion may be a slow process that continues relatively unnoticed, or it may occur at an alarming rate causing a serious loss of topsoil. The loss of soil from farmland may be reflected in reduced crop production potential, lower surface water quality and damaged drainage networks.

Causes of soil erosion:

Climate

The amount and intensity ofprecipitationis the mainclimatic factorgoverning soil erosion by water. The relationship is particularly strong if heavy rainfall occurs at times when, or in locations where, the soil's surface is not well protected byvegetation. This might be during periods whenagricultural activitiesleave the soil bare, or insemi-aridregions where vegetation is naturally sparse. Wind erosion requires strong winds, particularly during times of drought when vegetation is sparse and soil is dry (and so is more erodible). Other climatic factors such as average temperature and temperature range may also affect erosion, via their effects on vegetation and soil properties. In general, given similar vegetation and ecosystems, areas with more precipitation (especially high-intensity rainfall), more wind, or more storms are expected to have more erosion.

Vegetative cover

Vegetation acts as an interface between the atmosphere and the soil. It increases thepermeabilityof the soil to rainwater, thus decreasing runoff. It shelters the soil from winds, which results in decreased wind erosion, as well as advantageous changes in microclimate. The roots of the plants bind the soil together, and interweave with other roots, forming a more solid mass that is less susceptible to both water and wind erosion. The removal of vegetation increases the rate of surface erosion.

Topography

The topography of the land determines the velocity at whichsurface runoffwill flow, which in turn determines the erosivity of the runoff. Longer, steeper slopes (especially those without adequate vegetative cover) are more susceptible to very high rates of erosion during heavy rains than shorter, less steep slopes. Steeper terrain is also more prone to mudslides, landslides, and other forms of gravitational erosion processes.

19. Explain the behaviour of TV C curve

Answer»

The total variable cost is the cost that varies with the change in the level of output and hence it increases as output increases and decreases as output decreases.

Initially tvc curve increases at diminishing rate-This is because in the initial production levels firm is able to produce an extra unit of output at low cost i.e though variable cost increases but it increases at diminishing rate with subsequent output levels. The reason being that the firm is able to tap the availabe machinery and other inputs efficiently. ( in order to produce output, firm needs to employ labor and initially its easy to employ extra labor thus improving efficiency)

Later TVC increases at increasing rate-Now as firm employs new labor to produce more output due to this the workplace becomes crowded and it becomes difficult to work. Thus efficiency reduces and to produce extra ouput the cost increases but at an increasing rate.

Which Indian American professor has received a grant of $1.6M by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to protect kidneys from obesity?

Answer»

Dr Tahir Hussain, an Indian-American professor of Pharmacology at the University of Houston, has received a grant of 1.6 million dollars from the National Institutes of Health to examine a kidney cell that could prevent damage from inflammation caused by obesity. The targeted cells express a protein called the angiotensin type 2 receptor, which recently has been indicated to have anti-inflammatory and renoprotective actions. If activated, the AT2R will protect against chronic and acute kidney injury. Dr Hussain, an alumnus of the Aligarh Muslim University, will study the impact of inflammation in kidneys with active AT2R as well as those with no AT2R. This is the first time the receptor’s role to protect kidney structure and function against injury in obese subjects will be investigated.

1. How Reserve Bank of India keeps a check on the functioning of banks?

Answer»

(a)The RBI monitors the banks in maintaining a minimum cash balance out of the deposits they receive.

(b)The RBI sees that the banks give loans not just to profit-making business and traders but also to small cultivators, small scale industries, small borrowers etc. This is done by periodical statements submitted by banks to RBI which contain information regarding how much the banks are lending to whom, at what rate of interest, etc.

(c)This supervision is necessary to ensure that equality is preserved in business and industry so that small industries also grow. Also, RBI makes sure that banks do not loan out more money than they are supposed to, as this can lead to crisis situations. An example is the great depression of the 1930s, as it affected the world economy.
