20.

Difference in electronic spin in ortho and para hydrogen

Answer»

Ordinary dihydrogen is an equilibrium mixture of ortho and para hydrogen.

The amount of ortho and para hydrogen varies with temperature as:

At 0°K, hydrogen contains mainly para hydrogen which is more stable.

At the temperature of liquefaction of air, the ratio of ortho and para hydrogen is 1 : 1.

At the ROOM temperature, the ratio of ortho to para hydrogen is 3 : 1.

Even at very high TEMPERATURES, the ratio of ortho to para hydrogen can never be more than 3 : 1.

Thus, it has been possible to get pure para hydrogen by cooling ordinary hydrogen gas to a very low temperature (close to 20 K) but it is never possible to get a sample of hydrogen containing more than 75% of ortho hydrogen

Hydrogen atoms consist of a proton and an electron.  The proton has a charge of +1 and a spin.  The spin can either be CLOCKWISE or counter-clockwise.  So when you have a hydrogen molecule you have two possibilities:  the two spins can both be aligned (both clockwise or both counter-clockwise) or they can be opposed

Ortho hydrogen:—

The hydrogen molecule in which both the PROTONS in the nuclei of both hydrogen atoms spin in the same direction is called as ortho hydrogen. In this form the resultant nuclear spin is one.

Para hydrogen:—-

Hydrogen molecule in which both the protons in the nuclei of both hydrogen atoms spin in opposite direction is called para hydrogen. In this form resultant nuclear spin is zero.

25.

Distinguish between reversible and irreversible changes with examples

Answer»

Reversible changes.
It can be replaced to its initial position.
We can able to reverse the PROCESS as it is. It's a SLOW process since it has to REGAIN its initial thing. EG: water into ice, folding of paper.
Irreversible changes.
It can't be reply to its initial position.
We can't able to reverse the process as it is.
Eg:batter into idly, wood into ASH.

It is so because when we CONSIDER reactivity series COPPER COMES below the HYDROGEN.so it is unable to DISPLACE hydrogen from water.
Hence,Cu+H2O=no reaction

28.

Difference between intermolecular and intramolecular reaction

Answer»

Some reactions, two pathways present themselves: ONE VIA anintramolecular reaction (reacting GROUPS both within the same molecule), one via an intermolecular reaction (reacting groups in DIFFERENT molecules). Generally intramolecular reactions are entropically favoured.

A few varieties of COAL are almost pure carbon. Natural GAS, coal and oil have carbon in them. Natural gas and oil are all hydrocarbons that are compounds MADE from hydrogen and carbon.

31.

3. Relative to metals, how does the specific heat of water compare: higher, or lower?

Answer»

Solid > Liquid > Gas.
Temperature is a measure of the kinetic energy (K.E.)of the molecules PRESENT in a substance. Among the three STATES, the solid FORM has the lowest value of K.E. and the gas the highest, as in the solid state molecules are closely packed within a limited space for a particular substance. So more heat is required for the solid than the liquid, and the liquid needs more than the gas, to increase the temperature of a SPECIFIC mass by one degree.

How common ion effect affects solubility of a highly soluble substance?

Answer»

The lead(II) chloride becomes even less soluble, and the concentration of lead(II) ions in the solution decreases. This type of RESPONSE occurs with any SPARINGLY soluble SUBSTANCE: it is lesssoluble in a solution which contains any ion which it has in common. This is the common ion effect

Can anyone explain hybridization in an easy way???

Answer»

The process of "intermixing of atomic ORBITALS of nearly same energies to form a new set of orbitals having equivalent energies" is called hybridization. And orbitals which are formed in hybridization process are called hybrid orbitals.

Conditions for the hybridization:

· Orbitals of same element should take part in the hybridization.

· There should be minimum difference between the orbitals undergoing hybridization.

Characteristics of Hybridization:

· During hybridization the number of hybrid orbitals formed is equal to the number of atomic orbitals involved in hybridization.

· Hybrid orbitals form more stable and stronger bonds than pure atomic orbitals.

· Hybridization does not take place in isolated atoms and possible in those atoms which are prior to participate in chemical bonding.

Types of Hybridization:

· DIFFERENT types of orbitals intermix with each other to form different types of hybrid orbitals.

· Hybrid orbitals are formed by mixing of s, P and d atomic orbitals.

or

Hybridization is a process of mixing of two or more atomic orbitals of an atom having comparable energy to form orbitals of equal energy known as hybrid orbitals. For example: hybridization of carbon atom in methane is explained as follows (pic1)

One s and three p orbitals of carbon mix/hybridize to give four sp3 hybrid orbitals. The sp3 hybrid orbitals are used by 4 hydrogen atoms for sigma bond formation forming a MOLECULE of methane (CH4).(pic2)
