Solve : The Adobe Flash Plugin?

Answer»

Can anyone help a helpless old-age pensioner, please?

Whenever I open a video on BBC News, I get a message after a seconds warning me that the ADOBE Flash plugin has crashed.
This stops the video which I am unable to continue viewing.

If not too MUCH trouble, could anyone kindly send me clear and simple instructions how to remedy this fault?

I am only a computer newbie!

Many thanks.

JoeWould you consider USING a BROWSER such as Firefox? Firefox has a flash plugin that might fix this ISSUE and Firefox is well at keeping up to date.

If your already using Firefox let me know and we can dig further with that.

Solve : Android RCA tablet?

Answer»

Can anyone help me out? My niece has an Android tablet that she locked and would not give up the password because of what she has been doing on it. I gave up TRYING to find out and just reset it BACK to FACTORY default. Have we lost everything? Is there any way to get the pictures back? I know I'm probably out of luck but we really need them.Pictures are gone unless they were shared on facebook etc where you can see them at facebook. I just performed this on my daughters RCA tablet when it started to malfunction and it wiped all data and set it back to factory settings. My daughter also lost pictures that she was upset about, but thats the problem with devices like this and no cloud storage or data BACKUP plan in place. My second Android RCA tablet stills works. The first was sent back.
When I have new PHOTOS, I putt them in Dropbox. and later download them to my hard drive. IMO, everybody should use a cloud service or else save photos on DVD.

Solve : Can you restore administrators/users after removing them from windows login??

Answer»

Can you restore administrators/users after REMOVING them from windows LOGIN?

Recently removed a USER that once was a administrator/user from windows login and realized that files were not saved or imported to another admin/user. Is there a way to go back to get that information? Only if you have a backup.

If you need to hide or restrict a user, that can be done. Without destroying his stuff. In some cases you can recover erased data, but it is not certain.

Also, when you delete a user there is an option to save his files. Bu if you didn't, then the only hope is the backup, if you have one.

Solve : My laptop won't power on (already) did hard reset. HELP!!?

Answer»

I have an hp envy touch smart laptop. It won't turn on. I went through all the hard reset protocols and contacted support. Diagnosis is its more than likely mother board. I did a search on other ALTERNATIVES BEFOR taking it in for an expensive repair. A friend told me that I could try removing the clock battery and plugging it back in and then I also found a video that talked about I believe replacing the bios battery. Not sure if bios battery was the term that was used. Basically the guy unplugged the power source that went directly to the mother board and then he remove like a CIRCULAR piece that I think was just stuck to another board and then when he replaced it he just pressed the circular end back in place. Then he plugged the other end in and then reconnected the power wire back to the mother board. If any of this SOUNDS familiar as a viable solution to try before taking it yo repair or if anyone can fill in any blanks or has other suggestions I would be most appreciative. I've also heard the term bios reflashing but not quite sure what that MEANS. ThanksYou already have an active thread on this topic. I'm locking this one.

Solve : Windows XP Home SP1 clean install odd IE behavior?

Answer»

Had a strange issue happen with a clients system that I rebuilt.

Its a Shuttle computer with a AMD Sempron 3100+ with 1GB DDR 333Mhz RAM and 160 GB IDE HDD.

Installed all drivers from Shuttles website and no problems there, however IE wouldnt go anywhere. Yahoo, Google, etc all came up with errors as site unresolved check your settings.

Pinged sites with no problems. REBOOTED system, and problem remained.

Used SP2 and SP3 discs on the system to bring it to XP Home SP3 and after the SP2 disc was used IE then was able to get to Google and elsewhere, but at SP1 it was useless. All settings were default for IE at SP1.

Anyone know why SP1 clean would have done this? Is it really that old that that version of IE is useless until you upgrade to SP2 which includes a browser upgrade?

I brought his system to SP3 and fully patched although microsoft update site seems not very user friendly for XP with every page TRYING to sell you Windows 8. His system isnt worth investing any money into it, the motherboard is a socket 754 and it there are no multicore CPU 's available for it.

He just uses it for web surfing and e-mail so its fine for all he needs it for. The GPU is so weak in it as well with a VIA 32MB in which when I went to look at the radar map of the weather site you could see that the GPU was weak in how it rendered the radar maps weakly.

I was hoping he had a socket 939 or AM2 board so that I could give him a dual core and stretch the life of the hardware, but the only option he has for any performance boost is to stuff the AGP slot with like a Geforce 4 MX440 with 64MB or 128MB video memory, but the CPU being so weak its kind of pointless to even do that.

I am tempted to recreate the clean install of XP Home SP1 to see if it does the same problem in virtual environment, however I dont have any time to burn in something that is kind of pointless since he is fine with it running on SP3 now. I also installed the latest Firefox to it and free AVG antivirus since MSSE no longer supports XP.Was SP 2 installed as well ? ?...still no joy-joy i would DLoad and install an older IE ver...or install FireFox.Regarding

Was SP 2 installed as well ? ?...still no joy-joy i would DLoad and install an older IE ver...or install FireFox.

The system was ok after SP2 was run on it from the CD that Microsoft shipped to my business years ago. It only had this issue under clean SP1 build, and the XP Home SP1 Disc was free of defects, no scratches etc, so I doubted that IE was corrupt at clean install.

Sorry if this MIGHT not have been clear.

The system that had this issue is also running fine now after SP2 was installed to it after clean build. I then installed SP3 to it and then patched to latest after fighting with Microsofts website that doesnt make it easy to patch to fullest anymore as for they are promoting ditching XP and buying 8. I finally found a link at MS site that ran a script that allowed patching to the latest. I tried SETTING auto updates for like 3pm and then setting the system time to 2:59pm and then wait and watch network activity and when the clock hit 3pm on the PC. It didnt do anything, no network or HDD activity to indicate that the update that was scheduled was going to run, so I went to their site and found a path to get the updates pushed to it from SP3 to last patches.

I no longer have this system and gave it back to client running fine patched to fullest and instead of using IE that behaved from SP2 onwards, I have him on Firefox and he is fine with Firefox.

Solve : Problem with Twitter?

Answer»

I have a PROBLEM that I have not been able to solve. When I try to create a Tweet, if I type in a URL it starts generating bogus "pictures". It'll create about 5, then say I have to remove one before continuing. If I remove one, another is immediately generated. These are not real pictures. They have bogus FILE names. I can't tell if it's a TWITTER problem, or a problem with my computer. I have run several antivirus and malware programs and none of them has found anything. Looking for suggestions.

Solve : Finding colors on pictures??

Answer»

Is there a way to enter a color, (rbg or hex) and be told where on a picture that color, or even the closest color is?

Preferably on Photoshop, but any website or even free downloadable software would be nice. I need to analyze some infrared pictures, which is why I want to do this, so if anyone knew of software for analyzing infrared photos, that would be even better maybe. The color spectrum used in photography does not include infrared. To represent infrared to the human eye, false colors must be used.
If an infrared images is represented by a grey RASTER, there is no color data.
What is the source of the infrared images?

Reference:
Infrared spectroscopy
Quote

As with all spectroscopic techniques, it can be used to identify and study chemicals. For a given sample which may be solid, liquid, or gaseous, the method or technique of infrared spectroscopy uses an instrument called an infrared spectrometer (or spectrophotometer) to produce an infrared spectrum
Also:

Image from:

From a Flir camera. The professor I'm working with isn't here so I'm not really sure what the model is, or even the technical terms, but it will take two pictures, one in infrared, and one that's a normal PHOTOGRAPH.
Here are two of the pictures I'm working with.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]OK, it is a false color image. The area under the swing is very hot, the sky in the background is very cold. The creature rounds are rather WARM. This image gives intensity by using colors to represent strength.

Not all false color photos are of the same infrared spectrum.

Lots to explore! thanks so much! But do you have any ideas on how I can analyze it more efficiently? Because if I keep doing what I'm currently doing on Photoshop this project is going to take me a lifetime. No, not a lifetime. The first link I gave has about ten more links you have to read. Takes about four hours for an average reader with no prior background. The tool use use is not nor Photoshop.
Look:

You can explore the way different band combinations highlight different features by using a browse tool called Worldview, which displays data from many different imagers, including Aqua and Terra MODIS.
WorldviewIs your professor making you do this ? ?...because all Geek has explained is pretty accurate...
BTW the image could look totally different depending on what spectrum they choose to make it in ...therefore the one thing you are CORRECT about is it will take a lifetime.FLIR Tools

Solve : I want help on how to separate audio into low and high pitch on Windows 10 Home?

Answer»

I want to know how to change audio into low and high pitch. THANKS! Also, if you give a solution without downloading stuff that would be AWESOME!It would be more than AWESOME, it would be a miracle. I don't believe there is any native sound processing software in Windows 10 (HOME, or any other version) that can do that. However Free Audio Editor, is, as the name suggests, free and includes extensive filtering features.

http://www.free-audio-editor.com/index.phpYou said no downloading. And as Salmon Trout said, thee is no such feature in Windows 10 and there may never be.

Pitch change tools are in demand by vocalists who have trouble with hitting the right NOTES or very high notes. It is a big business. So if Microsoft had such a thing, they would not bundle in with the OS.

Or maybe you were thinking about SOMETHING ELSE?
Silly request for what you are trying to accomplish...
ESPECIALLY with your statement you don't wanna DLoad anything. Can i ask why ? ?

Solve : Online UPS?

Answer»

I UNDERSTAND it might be way more than I would ever need but can I use a OL1000RTXL2U unit for just a single desktop/single monitor/stereo system/network?
My tower is around 650W. I dont know how much my monitor/stereo/network takes up. I would like to be able to continue my work even after a power goes out.
I dont WANT a UPS just to protect my ELECTRONICS but for it to prolong the amount of time I am given once there is an outage. You certainly can use it to power that but bear in mind that UPSs aren't designed to keep the HARDWARE up in the event of a prolonged outage, it's just there to give you time to save work and shut down equipment CLEANLY. You'd probably only get around 30mins of runtime from it when the UPS is in good health.

Solve : Features you would lose with Windows 10?

Answer»

Gigabyte UK on facebook had this linked. FOUND it interesting and figured i'd share here:

http://www.techradar.com/news/software/operating-systems/features-you-ll-lose-when-upgrading-to-windows-10-1299655Thanks for sharing it. Some good-to-know stuff. The loss of XP mode and Virtual PC are the 2 that I'd miss.

But I have multiple systems and can run older games that are picky on Hardware/OS that matches what it was originally designed to run on anyways so its not really that critical for myself. For other people who might only have a single computer when I have 8 computers, they might be more in a world of hurt when say their Atomic Bomber Man or original Diablo game designed for Windows 95/98 that NEEDS an XP compatibility mode setting to run correctly with Windows 7, now wont run all all on Windows 10.

The Virtual PC I have used in the past mainly for testing questionable freeware. Nothing worse than loading up a piece of freeware that has dirty uninstallers or questionable code that loads the software to C:\windows\system32 instead of C:\Program Files\Software_Vendor_Name\ on your main system and then having to USE a restore point or rebuild it all clean again because of the problems created by it, so I tend to use Virtual PC 2007 still although there are alternatives out there. Prior to USING Virtual PC I use to load up a clean OS on a test box and test the software and then go through scrubbing the drive and installing clean again. Microsoft though did not like my activation of XP multiple times a week and so I eventually ghosted the test box so that I didnt have to reactivate XP each time I blew it AWAY to make clean again. Virtualization with Virtual PC made the test process as simple as loading up virtual machine, test software. Delete the VHD and copy a new clean copy of the VHD to the test folder for the next piece of software to test at some point etc.I didn't see anything to stop me upgrading, but I'm still going to wait a week or two. I have a 1-month old desktop running 7 and a laptop running windows 10 Preview 10240 which is staying

Solve : Free Windows 10 for micro computers?

Answer»

Not REALLY news, but it might be news to you.
For almost a year MS has said there would be some sort of free Windows for cheep devices. Yes, even devices that do not run Intel/AMD code. Like:
Ainol
Arduino
Raspberry Pi
RT devices
X-Box
Here are some Yahoo Videos:
Free Windows 10 For Micro Computers
Yeah, these videos are now old stuff. But it you have yet to see, take a look.
Below are for the Raspberry Pi
Raspberry Pi does Windows 10
Enjoy This is not full Windows 10, it is Windows 10 IoT Core designed for "Internet of THINGS" devices, it can run Windows software but does not have any sort of graphical interface, it is not suitable as a general purpose OS.

Ainol - Has x86 CPU and therefore runs regular Windows 10
Arduino - Microconroller, not a computer, doesn't run any sort of Operating System
Raspberry Pi - Windows 10 IoT Core - Not general purpose OS
RT devices - Windows RT is PRETTY much DEAD, haven't seen a device released in ages
X-Box - Games console, runs it's own OS based on Windows, XBox One has a regular AMD x86 CPU

Solve : Android SD micro supports up to 32gb only??

Answer»

Hello I have a zte grand phone Android and I currently have a 16 gb SD MICRO card INSTALLED and its says in my user manual it SUPPORTS up to 32 gb what HAPPENS if I buy a larger storage card say 64 gb will it still work? Or will it be complety useless! Thanks and advice would help because I'm unable to find any info on this.My thoughts on this subject is that the 64GB would only work with a format to 32GB. I ran into a similar problem with my blu-ray player that has a USB port for watching videos off of an external drive. It only supports drives up to 32GB due to FAT32 partitioning with no other file system support. While its not an android device, I am assuming that it may be a FAT32 situation if they claim it supports only up to the magic number of 32GBIt is an issue of the SD design.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital
Quote

The Secure Digital standard was introduced in August 1999 as an improvement over MultiMediaCards (MMC). The Secure Digital standard is maintained by the SD Association
Quote
SDHC
The Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) format, announced in January 2006 and defined in version 2.0 of the SD specification, supports cards with capacities up to 32 GB.[2] The SDHC trademark is licensed to ensure compatibility.[6

New versions of the design now go up to 2 tetra bytes. But it is not yet widely used. One issue is the much greater battery DRAIN a large card will put on any portable device.

Solve : A question about installing games/software which I can't find the answer to?

Answer»

So, I decided to make an account just to ask this question and here I go

Whenever I try to install GAMES or software, my computer usually asks for the administrator's password. But for some games or software, the screen to input the password doesn't come up. Also there are times when the password input screen comes up but even when I select cancel it still runs the installer or program. The question is: Why does the computer require passwords on some programs but not on some other programs? How does the program bypass all this? I just seemed to notice that the mainstream or more "FAMOUS" programs require passwords more often than the programs/games that are not that mainstream or well known. I'm not too much of an expert so I am hoping for a clear answer without too much complicated things. And sorry if the question was not clear

List of games that install without password required and those requiring password might help deduce the cause.Sorry for the super late reply

Examples of games/programs that I need a password to install:

Skype
Steam
Winrar
TERA
League of Legends

Programs that don't require/ask for password:

World of Warships
Minecraft
Osu!
Teamspeak
Eclipse(But not the JDK)

There is more but that is some that I can name right now.
Are you sure your on the Admin account when running installs ? ?Quote from: ImightHaveQuestions on November 22, 2015, 12:14:21 AM

Sorry for the super late reply

Examples of games/programs that I need a password to install:

Skype

TERA
League of Legends

Programs that don't require/ask for password:

World of Warships
Minecraft
Osu!

There is more but that is some that I can name right now.

The programs that need a password all need administrator permissions, since they save files to locations that are WRITABLE only by administrator accounts (C:\Program Files, C:\Program Files (x86), etc.)

The ones that don't, don't need administrator permissions to install- Eclipse installs by default to a C:\Eclipse folder, and Minecraft saves in the User's Application Data folder because apparently figuring out user permissions and installing it properly was just too hard.

By the by, the Password prompt itself appears when the program you originally launched explicitly wants administrator permission. The basic run down is this:

1. You Run the installer
2. The Installer runs under your user account.
3. The Installer detects it is not administrator. It attempts to elevate. Elevation is effectively saying "Windows, please re-run this program as administrator"
4. A standard user account launching a program under the admin accounts requires consent. If your account is an administrator account and UAC is enabled, one merely consents to the elevation request. On others where the user account doesn't have admin permissions, you will be prompted to enter appropriate credentials to allow it.
5. If you enter proper credentials or consent the program will relaunch. Otherwise, the original elevation (runas request) fails.

When the "installer continues anyway" that is likely the original program you already RAN continuing after the elevation attempt failed. Some programs will have a separate approach- for example, if I remember correctly, Chrome's Windows installer will request administrator permissions, but if it cannot GET them, it will proceed anyway and install to the user's Application Data Folder.

Solve : How to automatically backup Outlook data files??

Answer»

I have spent hours searching the internet for an answer to this and the nearest I have come is something telling me how to export information from OUTLOOK.

I have Outlook on my work computer and am the only user. I don't have a server, everything is just on my computer. To keep the INBOX TIDY and to easily find emails I use folders under Outlook Data FILES. How can back these up automatically without having to manually export the files?

Any help would be very grateful as I feel that they might currently not be backed up.
ChrisResident experts, am I missing something here? If the folders are indeed saved as separate .pst FILE(s), wouldn't the OP just include them as part of the scheduled Windows backup?

I was going to pay someone to do this but the way I see it is I should be able to do this for free. if someone knows how to do this and would be willing to do it for me I would gladly appreciate it because all I am wanting done is to find all the old emails I have had and signed up under since I first started getting on a computer which was 1999 or 2000.

I hope someone can help.
I'd contact the different sites individually contacting their customer support and then give them your info that they request. For the older accounts they may be completely gone as for Yahoo for example wipes the slate clean on abandoned accounts as garbage control of their servers to get rid of unnecessary allocated resources.

Additionally you might find that ownership of certain businesses had come and gone or assumed under new businesses as mergers etc. I ran into an issue years ago with software I bought for $150 that was registered to an Adelphia e-mail address since my ISP was Adelphia. Adelphia turned into Comcast and there was a period of time to transfer over your e-mail to Comcast which i did. What I didnt expect was that 3 years later I would need to prove ownership of a license for software by e-mail CONFIRMATION and PROVING I was owner of credit card to buy the software and I had a PDF of the actual order with order number wasnt good enough. I was lucky and found this software on a old 80 GB external hard drive and the activation key in the PDF of my e-mail from 2006 still worked. Otherwise I would have had to buy a new copy of the software I was told.Your only option is to contact the individual providers. I wouldn't get to hopeful, there will likely be several users with your name so they won't be able to uniquely identify you and even if they can there are probably data protection policies in place preventing them from disclosing the information to you. With some of these email accounts, the email address you created is the username, I believe. Surely, you know the email address you had with some of these email services. So, I suggest trying the Forgot Password procedure that is typically available on the website.

Solve : Might have cloned my SSD to a library folder. Any way to reverse it??

Answer»

Here are some images that might give a better IDEA of what I'm dealing with. I'm not quite sure how to exactly EXPLAIN my problem, but basically, my "Music" library that comes as a pre-installed FOLDER on Windows is now a clone of my SSD. I was relocating everything to my HDD when it HAPPENED, so I must have screwed something up. Is there any way for me to separate the two? It's weird having two FILES with the same stuff in them.

Solve : Scored a Lenovo Thinkpad X201 with Core i5 for free - SD Storage Fix?

Answer» GOT a Lenovo Thinkpad X201 with Core i5 for free today with power supply. It was going to GET thrown away due to damaged sata port that became non functional. I asked if I could have it and was told its trash but mine if i want it. I knew I could add a SD Card and use it if thats all that is wrong with it.

I was able to place a 32GB SD Flash card into the card slot and use my external DVD-Rom to install Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon to it and now its running off of that for the rest of its functional life.

This Core i5 screams. BOOT time and load time of OS and Applications surprisingly faster than expected.

So if anyone has a laptop with a blown SATA port or buried bad hard drive that they dont want to RISK killing laptop to swap out. Add a SD Card 8GB or larger and install Linux to it for a cheap fix. I already had the 32GB SD Card. Now I just need to get another SD Card for camera for like $13

Looks like the Toshiba intel atom netbook isnt going to be used much anymore that I have this now. You made a great find!
Why doesn't that happen to me?
For others to see:
Data sheet for Lenovo Thinkpad X201
Great find, I used to have an x201 and it was great (currently using a T440s). You may want to look into the SD card you are using as you could potentially get a faster one for better performance. You may also be able to get an "industrial" SD card with proper MLC or SLC flash like an SSD which would improve performance and lifespan, I've killed regular SD cards before by running them in a raspberry pi for extended periods of time.

There are also SSDs that would fit into the expresscard slot although I have no idea if the BIOS on the x201 would allow you to boot from one. Thanks for info and suggestions

I didnt even think about express card slot option for SSD. Cool ... Thanks for suggesting that. If the SD Cards start to get eaten up or if i decide I want to have Windows on this laptop that will allow for Windows vs Linux only.

The SD Card I have now is a 32 GB Patriot BRAND. I haven't killed one before so this will be a first if I kill this one. How long did your SD Card last before it was overworked?

Attached a pic with system info.

Solve : Why you want to want before you buy SSD.?

Answer»

This is kind of a negative recommendation. But it has a bright side. If you do not really need more SSD right now, you should wait.
Here is why:
Earlier this year Intel said they would bring a new product to the market the will outperform SDD at a competitive price.
So they say.

This is called cross point technology. Or 3D XPoint. Intel has named it as 'Optane' memory. Sounds like high octane.

For many milks to the stories, just Google:
Intel Optane
and find the PR from Intel. If they can really delivery this next year, It can change the way we think about flash storage from now on.
Here one of many quotes:
http://www.techradar.com/us/news/computing/intel-optane-brings-the-storage-octane-to-ssds-1302135
Quote

Because memory is written at the cell level rather than in block arrays, data can be accessed more quickly and efficiently with Optane's 3D XPoint technology.
On stage, Krzanich showed that an early prototype of an Optane SSD can access data up to seven TIMES faster than Intel's leading NAND-based solid state drive. Krzanich says that this is the world's first live demonstration of 3D XPoint in action.
Shall I hold my breath? For now if you need SSD, I'd buy one. When this comes out, the cost will be up there.

Additionally for anyone who wants fast performance for FREE and only needs a small storage space to access data fast, and has more than enough RAM creating an excess RAM amount they could allocate a portion of system RAM to act as a RAM Drive.

RAM Drives run faster than SSDs direct from RAM to CPU vs having to be passed from Drive through the controller through the BUS to the RAM and then the CPU. ( BUT ) they do require a HDD or SSD to write the image to and load from when shut down and boot up to save from and load from RAM.

Only drawbacks to RAM Drives are that the power goes out and the data is gone from consumer grade computers that lack the battery RAM that high end servers have, the image for the drive has to be loaded to RAM at boot and written back to HDD or SSD on shutdown ( slower boot and shutdowns as RAM Drive data is communicated between RAM and HDD or SSD ), the storage capacity of the RAM Drive is LIMITED to the available extra system memory, so a large RAM Drive is expensive and limited in size my maximum memory supported by the motherboard. * As well as to have a RAM Drive of a capacity greater than 4GB for the shared RAM Drive solution you need to buy a licensed copy vs able to get by with the free home version they offer.

http://memory.dataram.com/products-and-services/software/ramdisk

**** Suggestion if using a RAM Drive is to perform a few passes of MEMTEST86 on the system first to make sure all is HEALTHY ****

I created a RAM Drive on a system that I thought was healthy for a 2GB RAM Drive and built a project onto this space and had my program that I wrote able to very quickly perform read/write intensive execution, but because I had a troubled memory address the RAM Drive crashed and the data all lost in this space, so I had to RECREATE this after replacing the one troubled 4GB RAM sticks in the system with 8GB DDR3 RAM.If you always wait for the next best thing to come out, you'll never buy anything. What does want to want mean anyways ? ?Quote from: patio on November 16, 2015, 08:21:31 AM

This. Buy whatever suits your needs that's on the market at the time you want to buy, there are very few exceptions to this (when something genuinely is just around the corner that would meet your needs better). As Dave says, the cost won't necessarily be comparable, plus for typical usage you wouldn't necessarily even see the difference between a decent early SSD (like an Intel X25-M) and the latest and greatest. Heck, I have one of the fastest consumer SSDs on the market and in general use there's no noticeable difference between this and my old setup with a Crucial M4.

Solve : Can E-mail Header Show Which Device Sent E-mail??

Answer»

Is it POSSIBLE to determine which device sent me an e-mail if the SENDER of the e-mail uses several devices on a Microsoft Exchange account? Is there something in an e-mail header that would indicate each different device?
If you don't know the answer to my question is there a website that you would recommend where I can get an answer?
It all comes down to what information the mail client puts in the header. You can usually see what client sent the email so, for example if you are trying to determine between a PC running Microsoft Outlook or a smartphone running its own mail client, you can usually find these clients in the headers to tell them apart.

Hello,

THANKS for your reply. Where in the header would I find this information? I have tried comparing the headers but I can't seem to find anything that indicates one email is from a smartphone, one is from a work pc and one is from a home pc. They are all sending email from Outlook through a work related Microsoft Exchange account.

Solve : urgent need help?

Hi sir/madam

Hi need urgent help for excel FORMULA. I have data from cell A2 to A11 and I want that top 35% will GET $4000.00. and next 35% will get $2000.00. and rest 30% will get $5000.00 in cell B2 to B11.

Please help me urgent

Kind regards
VinodPlease clarify this better... what cells exactly get what percentages for column A2 through A11

With 35%, 35%, and 30% of 10 cells you have 3 cells for your 30% and 7 cells for 2 x 35% for the 70% remainder in which you have a cell that overlaps the 2 groups for 2 different MONETARY amounts, which makes no sense.Yes, more info is NEEDED. Is the data in A2 through A11 sales by salesman? Are the percentages supposed to be based on total sales of all sales people? If so, what cell contains the grand total of sales? If not, please clarify.

Solve : Unsubscribe from Top Stories - Google News?

Answer»

Hi there,

Somehow my work email address suddenly started getting this "Top Stories - Google News" spam every 5 minutes or so, all day every day. I never subscribed to this service (my work email address that's getting them doesn't EVEN have an account on here) and cannot seem to unsubscribe from them either.

At LEAST I've managed to set a rule in MS Outlook to automatically delete these emails (although I have to manually empty my deleted box), but I WOULD like to know how I can be removed from getting these constant emails I never asked for in the first place.

I already tried to go in my google account to unsubscribe from google alerts, but there is nothing to remove. My job MAILBOX (Microsoft Outlook) is not linked with my google account anyways.

Thank you in advance for your help!

vaudet
Found my solution.

In Outlook, go in the File TAB. Under File, you have a menu.

At the right of this menu, you have a square button named Account Settings.

Click on it. À scroll box menu will appear. Click on Account Settings in that menu (first on top).

A window appears. In this window, you have a “RSS Feeds” tab.

Go in it, select the feed and click on the delete button.

I put some pictures. It should help even if it’s in french.

Solve : Unwanted Desktop Invasion?

I have no idea how this pic of a vid game map became my desktop. But it has no X-out, and I'm not sure how to use the control panel to remove it.

Please advise... thank you.

If you give instructions please assume I need to be told like a THREE year old. I don't think they have computers yet.
Okay, so I found this item, however, most of you know I don't like trying to work on my computer.

So, do you guys think this will work if i input that command? I don't want to mess with the C Drive directly but the command in the start box... no problem.

I am assuming this is a 3rd party theme. I have no idea how it got there. I was trying to LOAD a map to view while playing a game but the computer was having responding issues so I closed the game and I thought all programs to do a cache clear. After I came back from the RESTART or SOMEWHERE in there, that map I was trying to load was coverng my screen wall to wall.

Thanks...

Idid it! I did it! Whew! I clciked Properties or Personalize and in THEMES I saw a drop box to change the current picture and I hit Delete and phiff! It was gone. Tahnk you Jesus... AMEN???

Solve : Lost SMTP in Thunderbird.?

Answer»

Recently, maybe a week ago, I lost SMTP in Thunderbird.
So, I tried some other SMTP servers I know of and have a POP account. Did not work.

I am not sure what broke the service. Possibly a CHANGE in my Ati-Virys program, Avast. Maybe?

As of now, if I WANT to reply to a message I get on Hotmail, I have to log into the Hotmail site and send the reply from there. This is a mild inconvenience. I like to use Thunderbird as my e-mail client.

Presently I do not have an account with Comcast, I am using it as a guest from my neighbor next door. With here permission.

I can not use the Yahoo SMTP.
And I cannot use the geek9pm SMTP because the SSL has expired.

Nor an urgent issue, but it would be nice to understand what went wrong.

BTW, I only tried in Windows XP. Would Windows 7 make any difference?

Thanks.

I use Thunderbird and last time I had a problem like this I found that my system date/time was wrong year. Is everything ok with the system date/time?

One ongoing problem I have had with Thunderbird for over a year now is that I have 3 e-mail accounts that it polls for new e-mail when launched and at times I get a complaint that one of my oldest of e-mail addresses which is a Yahoo address I have had since 2003 complains that it was unable to connect and to supply the correct password. I have used Thunderbird on all 3 accounts for so long without having to enter my passwords for them that at some point its going to be a nightmare trying to get into them if I get locked out for some reason.

The fix for this is to click on the [X] to exit out of supplying a new password and relaunch Thunderbird this way I dont BLOW away the cached copy of the passwords that I forgot after years of not needing them. I have been using Thunderbird now on same COMPUTER for almost 4 years.

Somewhere in a stack of old paperwork I probably have the passwords written down, but ever since the move to new house... I might have thrown away my alias info and passwords for those 3 accounts that are linked to Thunderbird. My one and only fail safe from a total lock out caused locally is by the system image I have that I can restore to to get Thunderbird running with stored passwords. If a hacker tried to hack my e-mail addresses and the email service PROVIDERS locked out my account requiring me to create a new password and prove ownership... I would probably end up parting ways with those e-mail addresses and starting fresh. Thanks. Now I think the issue is really Comcast. I need to get a secondary account with Comcast to be able to your their SMTP service.
For the Yahoo account, do you have SMTP set to port 465? Reference: http://email.about.com/od/accessingyahoomail/f/Yahoo_Mail_SMTP_Settings.htm
soybean,
Hey! That worked! I set the Yahoo account as the SMTP and port 465 and it worked!
Cool that you got it working. Interesting that somehow the port config got changed. I didnt expect that looking at this initially but makes total sense for the issue you had with comm failure.

Solve : Passive CPU Heatsink motherboard - Surprisingly stays cool Atom D510?

Answer»

For years I have avoided passive heatsinks because mainly I always found myself having to add the necessary airflow to keep the GPU or CPU cool from roasting. I bought an ASUS AT5NM10-i used off of AMAZON for $32 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131630 with free shipping for a project build for a server that will run 24/7/365 but didnt need to be anything all that powerful, but greater than just a NAS because I have a database running on it.

Before putting it to use for its intent, I decided to stress test this used board. If there was any problems with it I wanted to know sooner than later. I loaded up Speedfan on it and its idle CPU temp was 32C

I ran y-cruncher on it for a large number and watched in task manager as the 2 physical and 2 virtual HT cores all pegged and then watched the temp rise on the CPU. It raised to 37C pretty quickly and then creeped to 41C in a room that was 65F. But it wouldnt go over 41C. I was impressed by this since the case its in does not have any extra FANS. Its just a low cost $15 case with no extra cooling fans and the Logisys power supply just has a single 80mm FAN to vent out the rear of the case.

Buying this motherboard I thought I was going to be forced to add extra airflow. But the 13 Watt TDP Intel Atom D510 doesnt overwhelm the large block of aluminum heatsink.

So many times in the past when running stress tests, especially with low cost video cards that have a passive heatsink, I found myself having to add a fan to get airflow across the heatsink to draw the heat away otherwise it will cook in place to dangerous temps. I even contacted ASUS a few years ago asking how they could sell a video card with passive heatsink that overheats without added extra airflow. Their response was that the airflow inside the case should be considered when using their passive video cards and that for $9 more you can get one of the next models they have which has a fan such as with this video card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121765

My reasoning behind going with a passive heatsink video card was because the Geforce 7600GT I had prior only lasted about 9 months and then the small GPU fan failed and the GPU cooked. I then got an 8800GT and that fan failed in about 13 months and that GPU cooked killing it as well. Yet these cards were used in a clean environment, there were a few years that Geforce cards were having a bad rash of cooling fan failures and it wasnt just my cards but friends also had the same problem. One of my friends contacted the manufacturer of the video card inquiring about this to see if there was a recall. There was none, but he was told that there was a poor GPU fan design that allowed for a HOT spot to occur under the fan that would dry up the lubricating oil as well as some plastics were warping causing the shafts to seize up on the small cooling fans. So I decided to go passive to be done with GPU cooling fan failures. BUT immediately I noticed games would be fine and then start to get choppy with the Radeon HD 5450. I ran speedfan on the system and the GPU temp was up in the 83C zone. WAY TOO HOT!!! I had to cut the floppy drive connector off of the power supply that is not used and wire the 12V to a 80mm fan and tie wrap the fan upright to the bottom of the minitower blowing direct across the video card with passive heatsink in which then the GPU was topping off at 43C and games no longer choppy. Also 80mm fans last years without problems even if they get filthy so I knew that this was a good fix for an overheating passive video card.

Its nice that this is the first setup I have had where extra airflow has not been required. ASUS actually made this board with the intent of it functioning within safe operating temps with very minimal if any added extra airflow.

Additionally when I saw this advertised as a dual-core atom. I thought it was going to be the same as the other Atom I have with the N280 which sometimes people refer to as a dual-core when its really just a single-core with HT. The D510 is a true Dual-Core with HT that makes it act like a quadcore. While still limited in performance by intended design though this D510 is way better than the N280. Its not a board that I would run games on, but its far more responsive than the N280 with tasks thrown at it when testing. Currently running it for a week and stress testing it to make SURE its 100% solid before I migrate the needs off the older computer to this new green build server. A database can get messed up pretty quickly if there is any hardware instability. So its best to stress test and then after passing that to then implement its use after its proven itself to be solid and flawless since it is a USED motherboard and who knows if it was pulled from a troubled system. My hopes is that someone pulled it when they weren't impressed with its limited performance since it could be a headache build for someone throwing the wrong applications of intent at it.

Solve : Will Windows 10 become free if you ask??

Answer»

That is, IMO, a rumor and not a fact. So I put it here in Other.
For What its worth...
Microsoft planning to automatically offer Windows 10 to existing PCs
Source: The Verge By Tom Warren on October 29, 2015
Quote

Starting early next year, Microsoft says it’s planning to re-categorize Windows 10 as a "recommended update" in its Windows Update system. That means the Windows 10 upgrade process will download and start automatically on thousands of machines. "A user will be presented with a choice to install Windows 10," explains Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s head of Windows and devices, in an INTERVIEW with The Verge. "They’ll come back to their PC and there will be a dialog where they can choose to upgrade to Windows 10 or choose not to upgrade to Windows 10."
What?

The "Windows 10" upgrade is already "recommended".

Certain KB updates will show the "Get Windows 10" Notification. Before Windows 10's release you could "reserve" your copy. Initially, I thought this was straightforward- if you reserve your copy, then it will download and install it for you. Otherwise, it leaves you alone.

Evidently, however, I was mistaken, and Gave Microsoft far to much credit.

The KB updates are listed as recommended and important already. The one that installs the "Get Windows 10" program that shows the un-dismissable nag screen that can only be removed by forcibly uninstalling the appropriate update and them blocking it, is described as "fixing issues with Windows".

On both my my main Windows 8.1 SYSTEMS I declined to reserve an update. I originally left the GWX updates present. "Microsoft could not be stupid, so lacking in brain cells, so populated by obtuse idiots, that they would violate such basic consumer trust and repurpose their Update framework to deploy marketing garbage?", But, as it turns out, they did. Both of these systems forcibly downloaded- without asking me- 6GB of information- the Windows 10 install files. When opening Windows Update- which I had set to "Download updates but let me choose when to apply them" There was no "Update" button. Instead, Windows Update says "Upgrade to Windows 10" and only shows the Windows 10 download. Instead of "Install Updates" it says "get Started". It is not made clear how to remove them. If I want to install Updates for my current system, I had to click "show all available updates", uncheck "Upgrade to Windows 10", which despite being optional was always checked by default, them check off the appropriate updates to apply.

Since there are about a dozen or so updates that Microsoft is offering that insert telemetry garbage and Windows 10 nagware BS, I just stopped applying updates altogether.

Microsoft has been making a lot of noise that they are giving users a choice. From where I'm standing they don't give you a choice- they instead constantly nag users to reassert their choice if it isn't the one Microsoft wants. if you decline to update they will badger you- Windows 10 still get's downloaded and prepared. it still shows up in Windows Update automatically.

I think even more disturbing is how MANY people are praising Windows 10 and Microsoft. Fawning over how there is a mock start menu and that totally fixes Windows 8 while ignoring how the entire OS has been lobotomized to the level of user control of a schoolchild's vtech computer.

In this video, I have explained the career tips for B.Tech in Computer Science in simple Hindi language.

Maybe it will help. Sorry, i forgot to mention that i was doing BTech in India. I am new to this cyber security field and hence have feeble knowledge of various courses related to the certification of OSCP, comptia security+, CEH(Certified Ethical Hacker) or any other course suitable for me. I want to pursue MS in applied cyber security and hence would love a course that would set up the basics and help me to research in future.CompTIA Security+ would be a good, vendor-neutral start as it's probably the best-known entry level security certification. As regards studying for the certification, I've heard good things about this book - "CompTIA Security+ All-in-One Exam Guide, Fourth Edition (Exam SY0-401)" so I'd probably start with that. I learn best from reading hence the suggestion of a book (with accompanying CD for practice tests), if you're looking for something DIFFERENT such as video training just say

I'd probably start by studying towards and hopefully passing the CompTIA Security+, before looking elsewhere for security courses. You may however want to consider at least studying towards the CompTIA Network+ certification too, it's not a requirement but will help give you a foundation on which to build your knowledge of security.

Hope this helps!

Solve : Jobar Car camera?

Answer»

I ordered a Jobar car camera when I started installing it says in the manual insert a 2GB SD card (not included) into the SD card slot. Swell. The opening appears to be about an inch wide this must need the adapter then the card slips into the adapter do they make bigger ones meaning more memory that would still work? Does one BRAND work better than another?SD CARDS nowadays come in 2 main sizes - Regular SD cards which are about 1" wide and MicroSD cards which are MUCH smaller. A full size SD card should fit straight into the slot, if you have a MicroSD card and adapter, put the card into the adapter first and then put the whole thing into the slot.Quote from: John1397 on October 20, 2015, 04:38:12 PM

... do they make bigger ones meaning more memory that would still work?
Yes, larger capacity memory cards are available. But, you need to determine how much memory your Jobar Car camera will support. That info should be available through some channel from the manufacturer. Works but I do not know YET as with any camera what happens when the memory is full it either does not have no place to put new pictures or over writes existing picture.Did you read the Manual ? ?

Solve : Number of Key Funtions????

Answer» Hi, not sure where this should be so move it if need be. Okay I need to know if you can change a computer or keyboard, whichever, to perform more than two functions at once?

So to add to this and MAKE it less muddy, here is the situation. I am using an online site to play video games. I think they call it playing in the browser. Anyway, if any of you know the video game "Illusion of Gaia" then you know about the "Spin Dash" attack. It requires you to hold down one key, while alternating two others which make the character spin. Then you let go of the two while still holding one and then selecting a direction key. As you select the direction key the game character is still spinning.

Now I can get him to spin but he doesn't do what he should afterwards. I was told that it is most likely because keyboards are limited to two key functions. Ergo... my question. Can I change that to three?

I hope that isn't too convoluted a question.

THANKS guys and dolls...
The standard keyboard on the PC is very versatile. Be aware that some kinds of games will 'flush' the keyboard buffer to prevent the user from storing sequences ahead.

Yes, thee are programs to automate keyboard functions and type sequences very rapidly.

However, there is a problem here. You want to get an advantage in a on-line game. That is cheating. We do not HELP people cheat on-line games.

If you has a legit resewn to automate your keyboard, we could help you.

it is not an online game. What they don't mention is that Illusion of Gaia is a game for the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). They are playing it online likely through one of the many websites which have an online SNES EMULATOR that allows anybody to select and play any of the games from the system.

Thing is, their issue probably isn't related to that. It sounds like the issue is Key rollover. It sounds like their keyboard has 2-key rollover (excepting, presumably, keys such as Shift, Alt, and Control). Coincidentally, when SNES emulators were starting to gain popularity about a decade ago, one of the common tells that somebody was playing Chrono Trigger via an emulator was if they complained about a certain segment of the game; the segment required pressing L, R, and A simultaneously. On the SNES controller this is no problem. But most players were mapping their controls to the keyboard, and often without regard for key rollover; so they ended up not being able to pass that part and then complaining online.

Now, all that in mind, The answer is pretty simple- This is a property of the keyboard itself, and is not something that can be changed via software. If you want more rollover you'll need to look into purchasing a new keyboard that supports it.

If the website emulator you are using supports configuration you can try mapping keys to keys such as Shift, Control, and Alt. These tend to work independently.

Solve : Gold Contacts Worth?

Answer»

All memory seems to have gold plated contacts was wondering if this is what they call 24k or is it less and a 3/32" X 3/32" plated contact is worth how much taking into account gold is 1200 dollars an ounce?Good question.
Gold if piratically indisputable. Even when mixed with other metals, it can be separated.
One method is to mixed gold ore with mercury. The mercury will draw out the gold. Then the mix can be heated and the mercury vaporizes leaving pure gold behind. Not recommended, Mercury vapor is dangerous.

Here is a You Tube video:
How to easily recover goldI've seen people use acid on youtube to get the gold out of contacts and older processor and eprom surfaces. I doubt the gold is greater than 18k. Its probably LESSER than 18k. Years ago i was saving processors, eproms, and other chips with gold surfaces in a 5 gallon bucket. I even wasted my time with a utility knife and tweezers to lift the gold contacts off of PCB's for cards with gold contacts and had them in there. I BROUGHT the heavy bucket of scrap gold to the local recycle and they said they dont deal with scrap gold. They said its considered electronic waste and that it would cost me money to get rid of it. I decided to bring it back home with me thinking I was trying to get ripped off, but looking around even the jewelry stores that advertise they wanted scrap gold werent interested in scrap electronic gold. Friend of mine the one day offered me $50 for it and I sold it to him for $50 warning him that *censored* I'll sell it for $50, and there probably is more than $50 in gold here, but no places to turn it in and make money on this. He insisted that he still wanted it so. I got $50 and he got a bucket of scrap electronic components and contacts. Not sure if he ever turned a profit on it. He was a neighbor who saw it when I was giving him my flywheel pullers for his mower to borrow and he saw it in my shed.In the 1980s I worked for a guy who broke up mainframes for gold scrap. He used an industrial stone crusher to turn the PCBs and the components on them to a coarse powder, and then chemical processes involving strong acid and cyanide (!) These days he would get shut down in a minute by the local authority. It made money because the mainframe owners paid him to take them away and each mainframe had a lot of PCBs. To make money out of scrapping computers you need a lot of scrap material and a plant to process it There are some firms who will buy scrap that has been cleaned and sorted. It is sold by the pound depends on the quality and cleanness.

By using the right chemicals, one can separate the gold from PCB base materiel. MERCURIC acid is indicated, but one needs to wear gloves and a mask.

Masonry and concrete are cleansed with Mercuric acid. So it is easily found is building supply stores. Read the directions. There is gold but unless you can do it in significant volumes then it is not worth it, the memory is going to be worth more if you were to sell it as memory than you would get by extracting the gold from it.Salmon said it best...Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 23, 2015, 12:26:33 PM

Solve : I'm in the Market for a Tablet. Suggestions??

Answer»

I love traveling but can't take my desktop with me and not every hotel has free computer usage. So I finally decided to get a tablet before my next trip but I'm not very computer savvy. I've looked at several sites for their reviews; such as CNET, PC Mag, and others. Each is different, so it's confusing to me. I NEED a simplistic breakdown of what's good and worth its cost. (Pretend you're talking to someone from a third-world country.)

I need one to store interactive maps and travel information of my travel destinations; such as downloaded webpages. Even in my locale, I sometimes need downloaded maps and bus schedules for when I need to go to an unfamiliar area. And all hotels and motels have free wi-fi for their guests. (At home I get Xfinity wi-fi.) A friend suggests one with 32G storage. I don't want to have to pay more that $500.

And I need a cover for it with a wrist strap. I'm a klutz. I just know I'll drop it.

I know you like to brag about the tablet you have. Here's your opportunity. If the Hotel does not have a Wi-Fi service, your tablet will be over little value while traveling. Some tablet also have 3 or 4 g data service availability.

From my own experience, you don't want a 10 inch table in your pocket. Yet smaller that 5 inch is hard to use. You might settle for a 6 inch.

Based on the recommendations of others, you could look at:

iPad AIR 2
Amazon Fire
Samsung Galaxy Tab S2

All of these are top products.

Thanks.

A loads of research later has me down to Lenovo Tab 2 and Toshiba Encore 2.

I'm leaning to the Toshiba. As I SAID, you do not want to cray a 10 inch in your pocket. Yes, I have a 10 inch, but I have low vision and I need it. A normal person can do well with an 8 inch display. The Toshiba Encore 2 comes in either 8 or f10 inch models.

But he choice is up to you. Toshiba is a top brand. But nobody is perfect.
A Few Problems with Toshiba Encore.

BTW: While in your hotel room you MAY want to use a portable keyboard. Fleible Bluetooth keyboards and popular for travelers. Now the hard part is finding a stand to prop up the table so you can type with both hands.
The Lenovo is an Android based tablet while the Toshiba runs Windows. Do you prefer one of those OSes over the other?

I personally like having a Windows based tablet because I can run the same programs on it as my desktop or laptop PC. 32GB of disk space is not a lot on a Windows tablet, you will likely only have 7 or 8GB free on it due to how much space the OS and pre-installed software takes so I would recommend you get at least 64GB for a Windows tablet. The Toshiba does have a micro SD card slot that can accept up to 128GB cards so you can expand the disk storage that way.

Solve : Quick beginner question about changing acer aspire v5-531 laptop's screen.?

Would greatly appreciate an answer to this. So I'm looking for a new screen for my acer aspire v5-531-877B6G50Mabb. I'm only FINDING SCREENS that match until v5-531-877 but the rest of the model is not the same. So does it matter what screen I buy as long as its an acer aspire v5-531? Will it work? For instance, could I order this one even if the LAST letters and numbers are not the same?

http://www.lcd4laptop.co.uk/acer-aspire-v5-531-887b4g50makk-laptop-screen.htmlHave you contacted ACER ? ?You contact the vendor.
A quirk search shows one vendor who claims he had:

v5-531-877B6G50Mabb
The price was US $79.89

No, I won't give the link. I do not represent him or recommend s his store. And the item was sold a few MONTHS goon an auction.

What I mean to say is that the stores the sell this stuff know best what changes were made to the REPLACEMENT parts. Normally a manufacturer would have little resewn to alter a major part of a model. But you have to ask.

Solve : My printer bargain?

Answer»

I just had to share this! I am so pleased. Background: 7 years ago I ditched an inkjet (ink costs) and got a very cheap personal monochrome laser printer, a little Canon, 50 UKP (AROUND 77 USD) and was very pleased with it. It worked fine for all of those 7 years, on two successive computers (XP and Windows 7). Running costs were negligible - it is still on the original toner cartridge, although I had to get it out and shake it a few weeks ago. However just after upgrading to a new PC and a month later, Windows 10 it vanished from Devices and Printers. Latest driver, follow instructions to the letter, uninstall, reinstall, no go. I didn't mind too much because I had been hankering after a colour laser and this could be the excuse. I narrowed my choices down to 3 - a similar mono laser, again 50 pounds, a basic HP colour laser, around 99 pounds (144 dollars) or (the Devil tempted me!) a better Canon colour laser, 129 pounds (200 dollars). I could get any of the three from a big office supply company (the name is the same as those things that hold sheets of paper together).

Yesterday I had a day off work and called the local branch. Plenty of cheap mono printers, but neither colour model I asked for in stock! I really wanted to pick up a printer that day. The guy on the phone must have SENSED my disappointment because he asked if I particularly wanted these models or was i just looking for a colour laser. I said that was the case, and he said they had an ex-demo printer, no packaging, but brand new unused with still sealed toners, an HP Laserjet Pro 200, model M251nw, and I could have it for 50 pounds with a 2 year warranty if I came and collected it myself. I did a quick Google while talking, and saw that model on UK sale for up to 240 pounds (371 dollars!). I said "I'll be there in 30 minutes!". It is a beast! Big and black and weighs 41 pounds. My wife was a bit taken aback, but she was won over by the price and the print quality, and she agrees it is built like a battleship. It has wireless so i can Telnet into it... hours of fun... And I have money in the bank for toners in (hopefully) quite a few months time.
Excellent... i love stories like this...even when others get a great find it makes my day.Great to hear that and had a laugh at the business name description that hold paper together.

I have had pretty good luck buying demo models off the shelf, however I thoroughly check them out first to make sure they don't have random destructive customer syndrome where people by accident or intentionally break the demos on the shelves and have no signs of falling off the shelf to the floor. I generally shake them and the store clerk looks at me funny as I listen for any broken pieces that are floating inside or a penny floating around inside as I had happen with a demo inkjet Epson year ago. That some little kid must have dropped into it expecting something in return, malicious customer being funny, or a cashier that went to pop open a roll of pennies and one of them went flying and landed in the top paper tray as it was one of the old top loaders where paper rested upright.

When it comes to open box items though... I haven't had such good luck. My worst purchase was a Pentium 4 2Ghz HP Pavilion full size tower in 2002 for college that the same business that holds paper together had when I was looking for a college system upgrade to handle the Visual Studio . Net edition that my Celeron 700Mhz wasn't enough to run it as well as video games I had at the time were struggling with it and the GeForce 2 32MB PCI Video Card. I got that system that was normally $999 for $719 as open box discount, and didn't thoroughly check out all specs. Upon first boot up it was registered to another customer and it was loaded with a porn virus that caused it to stack dirty website windows the minute it was connected to the internet. Thankfully it did come with its system recovery CD's and so I just blew away the problems on the HDD, however it was an AS-IS purchase for an open box PC and so while HP had a warranty on the computer that was still good, I couldn't return the system to the business that holds 2 sheets of paper together because it was an AS-IS purchase. The biggest problem was that the games I wanted to run on this $999 computer needed a video card and not integrated video and while I did save $280 off retail buying open box for a model they still sold new for $999, it didn't have an AGP slot and so I was stuck with only PCI which was not so good for video games of the time. I tried to make it work by REPLACING the GeForce 2 32MB card with a GeForce 4 MX440 64MB, but still the PCI BUS was a serious bottleneck and so performance was poor. Later getting a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz for free with a GeForce 4 MX440 64MB AGP carded system I realized just how much of a performance difference there was with the PCI bottleneck that AGP did not have. I ended up using this system for a short while while in college but when the Advanced C++ Programming with Visual Studio .Net 2002 was over with, I ended up having to replace it to get a system that could game. So I bought a Compaq Presario S6030NX with AthlonXP 2800+ 2.08Ghz with 80GB HDD and 256MB RAM ( after first CHECKING at Radio Shack to buy just the tower and asking the store associate if it was ok if I opened the side panel to look in and he gave me a screw driver and allowed me to take a look since the box didn't state if it had an AGP slot or not. They had this model on sale for $549.00 for the tower in which you could itemize your purchase and buy monitor optional for like $249 more. I saw the AGP slot and said SWEEEET! I'll take it ). However Radio Shack didn't sell any parts for upgrades and so I ended up having to go to the place that holds 2 sheets of paper together to buy a 256MB DDR 333Mhz RAM stick and a GeForce FX5200 8x AGP 128MB video card for it to make it into a gaming system and 512MB of DDR 333Mhz RAM. Games ran so sweet on that computer. Back in 2003 AMD was outperforming Pentium 4 and so that's why I went with the AMD. Ever since then I have mainly bought AMD even though Intel has been beating them out in the benchmark wars for quite a few years now. Today all that remains of the original Compaq S6030NX is its case. It has gone through an evolutionary upgrade process ever since 2008 when the motherboard died. About 3 upgrades since 2009 and is currently a Athlon 64 x2 4450B overclocked to 2.53Ghz with 4GB DDR2 800Mhz Corsair XMS2, ASUS AMD ATI Radeon HD5450 512MB PCI Express, running Windows 7 64-bit with 1 SSD and 2 HDD's with a 550 watt PSU.

Best of luck with your recent purchase. I have the Multi-function Laserjet Pro 200, That is definitely a huge bargain for a huge printer. I've had mine over a year now and according to it's report page I've printed about 300 pages with it (Mostly test output from the software I work on) or so with the stock Toner cartridges and it is at 60% Black and 80% for each color toner. Pretty sure I paid full retail, bought it online from the same paper fastener big-box.

The closest I come to bargains is when I see eBay listings for broken game consoles that I know how to fix (specifically, Gamecubes listed as not reading games, which is a simple laser potentiometer adjustment).

No matter how heavy it is...that printer is worth waay more than you got it for...Congrats.Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 08, 2015, 01:54:48 PM

I see from the consumables report that I have what must be starter cartridges (500 page versus the 1000 regular ones) but I have seen user reviews on Amazon where people have got considerably more, one guy said he had got 944 pages and counting out of a black starter cart. You can override the warnings, shake them etc.

I have been working in a 25 person office for 5 years. When I arrived they had 4 HP mono laser printers and 2 gigantic colour ones, I forget the models. they were big and noisy but they just kept on churning work out. Hardly ever went wrong. About a year ago my employers introduced a "Sustainable Print Initiative" and replaced them all with one big Xerox Phaser 4600 mono printer and one even bigger Xerox 7525 Workstation MFD. Jesus they are crap! I should know as I am the "Print Super User" and I seem to spend half my time calling the service desk. They are supposed to report supplies status, JAMS etc over the network to the Xerox depot, and we were warned NEVER to unplug them or turn them off... they are smart and we'd only screw them up... the first time we had the MFD get in a sulk the service desk guy said "Unplug the AC and the network and wait for 10 minutes then reconnect".

Solve : Touch-pad not working?

Answer»

I had problems with typing letters T and G,on off,on my Packard Bell laptop for quite a while. I then bought a new keyboard and went to a professional IT man who fixes laptops for a living. He opened the laptop and there was lots of dust inside. He cleaned it with a small brush, changed the keyboard but it wouldn't work. The mouse was working as normal. Then I left for an hour and he changed the keyboard successfully, but when I went back the touch-pad laptop mouse was now not working. He told me dust MAY have got inside (my fault, though it did work after he dusted it off!) or the circuit (inside) got broken and he could do nothing. It is impossible to fix it,according to him.
He charged me for changing the keyboard and gave me an external mouse as if it was all right. I feel terrible that I went to him with a working touch-pad mouse and got out with a broken one. I find it tricky to work with the external mouse and am FEELING very down about the whole thing. What may have happened, how and why? I so desperately want my old mouse to work and not to carry the new one around with me.I feel like crying.Last night I woke up several times and wanted to cry.Sorry you were sort of taken by a BAD ethic computer repair guy. I service peoples computers on the side and if I break something in the process, I assume liability and replace it. This is why I have my customers bring me their system and we both look it over together and get an assessment as to what is wrong. If something that worked on the day of delivery is broken after the repair, then the damage fees I would eat. I have only had to do this once in the past with my daughter clothes lining the power cord of a laptop I was FIXING and she busted the power jack. Since then I have my own shop where my customers computers are safe and secure.

Getting back to your issue, have you requested the repair guy to fix this issue or else you will share negative feedback with others about his business ethics on facebook or elsewhere? HANDING you a corded mouse as a solution is not a solution.

He should at least take the time to open the laptop up and inspect to see if he accidentally bumped the ribbon cable. Maybe its just partially dislodged and needs to be reseated for the touch pad.

What is the exact model laptop you have so I can look into a parts breakdown for you to make suggestions if the computer guy is not going to assist you with other than a corded mouse.

Solve : Why is swap space "required" even with a system with tons of RAM??

Answer»

I was given this question today by a coworker. And it actually stumped me because I felt that he has a valid POINT given his setup / computer usage needs. And Windows 7 has a minimum swap space requirement of a single drive to have at least some swap space enabled vs totally disabling paging/swap space.

Quote

Why is swap space required even with a system with tons of RAM? ( Isn't swap space really a thing of the past for inadequately built computers, in which modern computers with plenty of system RAM don't really need this feature? He stated that sure you would need swap space if say it was to be a gaming system and it only came with 4GB RAM, but based on application of the system you can be almost running it wastefully putting write cycle wear on your SSD configured to use swap space just because its configured to be available by default, but not because it actually needs the swap space.)

His statement was that he has a system with 8GB of RAM and his system has a SSD, and 12GB of his 240GB SSD is wasted as he stated for SWAP space. Sure he is able to go in and reduce the swap space to just about none, but Windows 7 64-bit doesn't allow for you to set it to absolute none. The fact that he isn't a gamer and this system is used mainly for e-mail, Netflix, and web surfing his specs of a Core i5 with 8GB RAM and 240GB SSD are more than plenty for his usage.

He states that according to his desktop memory gadget that he never sees more than 3.5GB of the 8GB DDR3 RAM in use. And even after setting his swap space to just about none he hasn't noticed any loss of performance but he has noticed that there is less LED activity for the SSD, so he is forcing Windows 7 64-bit to juggle it all in system RAM.

I PERSONALLY have yet to have a system with enough memory to consider turning swap off. If anything I have gained performance by putting swap designation on a different hard drive to that of the drive that a video game is installed and running on to avoid the game trying to load map files and textures at the same time that the system is performing the read/write to drive memory swap paging juggle and have a performance advantage.

Only reason that comes to my mind is that the OS was designed that way so it could accomodate all kinds of PC setups...including those with minimal RAM...Correct - Windows was designed to page and it always will, regardless of the pagefile setting. Not having a pagefile means that pages that are marked discardable never will be (since there is nowhere else to put it); it also means that large allocations will always require a physical memory commit charge, since virtual memory is, in some SENSE, disabled. Normally if a program allocates, say, 1GB, that gets allocated as a virtual allocation, what this means is that no physical or pagefile memory is actually allocated at all until that program starts changing the RAM Block it allocated. This is of course, how Virtual Memory works. In this case, the pages of the 1GB block are marked as blank. In the pagetable these pages are considered "swapped out" even though they don't actually have any data. Without a pagefile, this cannot happen; if a program allocates 1GB, that full, empty block of memory will be committed to the backing store, which in this case would be Physical Memory.

I believe memory-mapped files work different as well, and require a more significant physical memory allocation than they do when there is a pagefile backing store.

I have 32GB of Memory myself. For a time I disabled the pagefile thinking that even with the above reasons I won't have a commit charge of 32GB.

Well, I eventually did. Merely keeping a few browser windows and other applications open for a time eventually caused the fun stuff to happen where fonts started showing up as the System font and window decorations weren't painting properly. and programs crashed left and right.

With a pagefile in that situation there is a lot of thrashinmg of my SECOND disk but nothing outright crashes, which I prefer, since I can just close the applications I don't need open while preventing data loss.
Thanks for all the responses. Printed this out to share with him tomorrow.

I forgot about the trash management of data as BC stated. Also didnt know that Windows really needs paging/swap space as its original design relies of it to maintain its healthy run state.Linux also "needs" swap space.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/398258/do-i-need-a-swap-partition
Quote
A swap partition of 4GB (8GB is not required) will make your system much more stable and is highly recommended. When the system runs out of free memory, memory contents will be exchanged into the swap partition, and if there is no swap partition, the system crawls to a halt. Hibernation also needs swap to function.

Windows 8.1 can have a page file.

This is about Windows 7
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-virtual-memory-size#1TC=windows-7
Quote
If you receive warnings that your virtual memory is low, you'll need to increase the minimum size of your paging file. Windows SETS the initial minimum size of the paging file equal to the amount of random access memory (RAM) installed on your computer, and the maximum size equal to three times the amount of RAM installed on your computer. If you see warnings at these recommended levels, then increase the minimum and maximum sizes.
