Solve : making use of a old pc?

Answer»

Hello
I have a old pc with a twenty gb hardrive that still works fine, I have just bought a new one also, i wondering is it possible to connect the old one with the new one so i can use it to store music on what WOULD i need to achieve this if it is possible, i will only be using the one monitor., what cables will i need
thanks Some newer PCs and hard drives use Serial ATA whereas the older PCs are IDE. There are different cables for both types. It'd depend on if your mother board had both.

There is some work involved in setting jumpers for master/slave configurations with multiple HDs on the IDE spec. You did get an IDE drive, not a SATA, right?  If so, you should be able to install the new drive along with the old one, assuming you have space inside your computer case for both drives and your computer's power supply is adequate to support the additional component.

As the other POST said, you'll need configure one drive as master and the other as slave.  You should have some documentation with your new drive that has some info about this.  Note that your computer's BIOS may not recognize the full capacity of the new drive.  How old is your computer, and how large is that new drive?  If your BIOS will not recognize the full capacity of the new drive, look for documentation on this from the hard drive manufacturer; you may need to visit their website and download an "overlay" to install so that you can utililize the full capacity of the new drive.Any DETAILS about the hardware would be HELPFUL in getting an appropriate response.

If both are IDE have a look here:

Solve : Toshiba Satellite bios help?

Answer»

My dad has a Toshiba Satellite 4080XCDT. I can't seem to find a way to access the bios on this computer. Is there some trick to it? I have tried F2 and the Delete button, can't find a way to get in. Am I missing something??? Did searches of the database, for some reason I can't get the search function to work.

Thanks all,

JonYou can access the BIOS settings on these MODELS using any one of these 3 methods.

From the Windows Control Panel, launch the Toshiba HWSetup program. HWSetup provides a user-friendly graphical frontend for modifying BIOS settings. Please note that if you change some settings, you may be required to restart your computer. HWSetup comes preinstalled on your Toshiba portable PC, or it can be downloaded as part of the Toshiba Utilities package for your model.

PRESS the [Esc] key while the system processes its Power On Self Test (POST). In order to use this method, the computer must be "off", meaning not in sleep/suspend or HIBERNATE mode. Press the power button, then immediately press the [Esc] key (it doesn't hurt to hold the key down). When the POST finishes, you'll be prompted to press the F1 key to enter BIOS setup. Press the [F1] key to access the BIOS setup program.

From MS-DOS, run the TSETUP program. TSETUP must be run under real mode DOS (not a Windows-based MS-DOS prompt) with no memory manager (like HIMEM.SYS, QEMM386, or equivalent) installed. TSETUP was provided originally with your computer, or you can download it from Toshiba's Website

Solve : PCMCIA Ethernet card?

Answer»

Hello,

I recently connected a PCMCIA 10/100 ethernet card to my daughter's IBM laptop. It runs on XP Pro, so there is no need to download drivers and such, SINCE XP will auto install the driver, per the instructions on the installation pamphlet.  It just said to look in the device manager for the network adapter.  If it's there, the driver has been installed correctly. I looked and it is there.

I turned the laptop, and my PC off, switched the ethernet cable to the laptop to test it, and booted the laptop.  When I select the Internet EXPLORER, I just see "about: blank" in the browser.  I also see that I'm working offline. When I switch the cable back, it works FINE on my PC.

I've installed 10/100 cards in 2 pc. w/o issues.  I RUN the cable through a modem and to a cable router to connect my computers.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

MaryWith those cards the USUAL order is install software without card in machine, reboot and install card  to finish installation. Some bizarre cards do better with whatever XP puts in there, rather than their own drivers. Go figure. You might try it the first way.

Is WEP enabled? If so, turn that off until you get this issue straightened out.

You may need to run Internet Connection Wizard as well. The IE homepage is probably set to about:blank.
Untick 'work offline' and try a bookmark or type google in the address bar & hit enter.

Solve : Your favorite video card manufacturer?

Answer»

Which of these two video card manufacturers do you favor the most? Why?

FlameNvidia, only because I have one.Would you prefer ATI?

FlameNo, I'm happy with my nVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X (Asus V9280), it runs really well for what it is.
Time to upgrade soon.
I have an nVidia 6600. I'm happy with the results. If an ATI worked as well, I'd use it. But the NVIDIA I bought, and the NVIDIA I enjoy. I may try ATI on my next upgrade. A long time from now.

The only real problem I've had with an nVidia is that a CERTAIN game doesn't run on the GeForce 6XXX series. I found that out the HARD way. But that's a software issue, not a hardware one. Nvidia 6600 here to. I enjoy it, and I have no problem with performance. I like ATI, but I would prefer Nvidia because I have more trust in them, and ATI hasn't really astonished me.Hmm, really? ATI not a good PERFORMER? Just so I have reference when I upgrade in the future, what problems have you had with ATI? You see, I get cursed out on the net (not in strong WORDS, more like "Why do you have a crappy nVidia card?" and even Raptor said, "nVidia is pap". I've never had any serious problems, except the limitation that comes with cards. It follows a basic principle:

The more you spend on a card, the better the performance.

OK, sounds like basic knowledge. But that's the only problem I have with video cards, period. If I only shell out $150 for a card, I get what I pay for. But if I fork over an additional $20, and go up several levels of video cards (Odd that an nVidia 5500 is only $20 less than an nVidia 6600) then you really do get what you pay for.

So, basically, I'd like to know what complaints people have about nVidia/ATI. My reason for choosing nVidia had to do with the fact that on forums I hear people saying of games, "Yeah, ATIs have a problem in that area. You can download the patch for ATIs at [insert link here]"

OK, nVidia doesn't have to have a dozen downloads to play a dozen games. It just... works for me when I have an nVidia. It isn't because I had a problem with an ATI (except on my old system, I quickly discovered the difference between AGP and PCI. since I bought an AGP and my old box didn't have such a slot on the motherboard).Hmmm, there are many other "video card manufacturers".  XFX, eVGA, PNY, ASUS, Apollo, etc.  Practically all of these "video card manufacturers" use a graphics chip manufactured by nVidia or ATI.

I prefer cards with nVidia chips.  No particular reason; it's just what I've had the most experience with.NVIDIA because its the one i have and everyone i know has lol

Solve : Messed up Computer?

Answer»

( Don't take it so hard, I'm not an englishman)
I have a SLIGHT problem here. My copmuter is about 2 years old, and now i finally got it back from a reparation. something about swollen thingies on the mothercard, so they replaced it with a new card(And they also deleted all files, games etc.) But now it isn't what it used to be. i mean the mothercard works alright i suppose. but every program i try to use, always ends up saying: A problem has occured, and i can CHOOSE by sending or not sending some inormation on what the fault were caused by to microsoft. ( im running XP)

So, if you understanded one single word about what i am trying to say, please answer!Whenever something in XP crashes  you have the option to report it to microsoft, I'd personally recommend against doing that, but its up to you.I guess you want a reason for the crashes but I haven't got one.  This is one of the most difficult problems to diagnose.  Suggest you take the beast back to where the new mobo was installed and demonstrate your problem to the techs.  Maybe they can do some investigating.

Have you installed SP2??

Good luckOskar Jenssen......It isnt normal for Win XP to be continually crashing ........I can't reall the last time one of my XP machines crashed .......Do you have all the latest updates from M/S ..... SP2........ Is your anti-virus up to date . Do you have some sort of spyware scanners installed ?  A good spyware scanner is Antispyware Beta..... GET it at .... http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Do you have all the updated device drivers installed ?

If you do and the crashes continue , I would be going back to the SHOP that did the work and be complaining
........... LOUDLY .

let us know

dl65

Before you shout at the POOR shop repairer, you must consider the Windows license issues....

According to Microsoft, if you replace the major component in your PC, e.g. changed teh motherboard, NIC, hdd  etc... you need to reactivate your Windows by phoning Microsoft explain your scenario and they will issue activation code, then maybe your problems will disappear.

Does that help?

Solve : No keyboard no mouse?

Answer»

So my father in laws computer quit recongnizing his CD/DVD drives.  It was as if they didnt even exist.  He was following the steps in the trouble shooting for HP off their website, and then his keyboard and mouse quit working too.  Is there a way I can connect my laptop, or connect remotely to his computer so that I can role back to the restore date before he lost the keyboard and mouse, so we can try and get some of his information off the hard drive?
Thanks!
DBWell you didn't post your operating system or his, and I don't feel like GUESSING, so will wait for you to supply this info.

What about a system restore? Again, if not ME or XP that is out, but since we don't....

You get the picture.  We both have windows XP I have a Dell computer and he has a HP.  I dont know how to do system restore when I dont have a keyboard or a mouse, and the disks that came with the computer go into the dvd/cd drive that the computer is not recongnizing.  Sorry for the lack of information.
DBI IMAGINE this is a USB or wireless keyboard and mouse? Do you have a real keyboard and mouse to use in that case?

There are 3 versions of XP so that didn't help all that much. (Got to be specific!) If the good computer has XP Pro, then maybe.

Here's info on system restore once you get RUNNING. You MAY have to reset the BIOS (remove the battery on the motherboard for 5 minutes and restart after it has been replaced.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/systemrestore.mspx

Yes he did have a USB and wireless mouse installed.  I took my PC's keyboard and mouse over, but they are connected with usb cords also, If I use an old regular keyboard that MIGHT make a difference?
Thanks
DBYep, it's always a good idea to have ancient equipment around when all the "gadgets" quit working!

Don't overlook the removing the battery tip if that doesn't do it.How do I reset the BIOS?  Sorry I am not good at this stuff.  Is there a website that will give me step by steps on how to take the battery out?
THanks

"Under Windows XP normally there will be a Mail Recipient option in the SendTo menu when you right click on a file. This option opens the default mail program and sends the file to a person you specify. If this SendTo option is missing you can replace it by doing the following: Open Notepad and save a blank (empty) file with the name (no quotes) "Mail Recipient.MAPIMail" in the directory (no quotes) "C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\SendTo\". When you do that the option should again appear in the SendTo right click menu."Still working on this and want to share what I have tried and learned.
Found the following on Microsoft web site;
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;158183

Text there:
RESOLUTION
The system requirements for the Send Via Email command in are the same as for the Send command on the File menu in many Windows applications.

To TEST the Send command using Microsoft Write, do the following:

1. Click Start button, and then click RUN.
2. Type write and click OK.
3. On the File menu, click Send.
If your mail client launches and you are able to send a file via email, the Send Via Email command in Picture It! should work also. If Microsoft Write can send and Picture It! can't, call Picture It! technical support.

If sending a file from Microsoft Write fails, contact the technical support organization for your email tool and say something like this:
"I'd like to use Microsoft's File Send feature without having to attach the files to email myself. Is there a way to make my email service accept MAPI calls so that the File Send command in Microsoft Write will launch my email editor?"

So I guess I'll have to call the computer support on this.
Thanks to those who offered advice.

Solve : Surfing History?

Answer»

Hi, Hope someone can help with this...I use IE6 and windows xp...I want to get back to a site I surfed a few months ago to follow up something but I cant remember the site. Is there a way I can enter the date and review the surfing history for that DAY...

many thanks..
cm162If you haven't assigned your IE history cleaning for a short time you can view visited sites between 0-100 days.

Check properties of your IE and look up for history cleaning.Sorry I should have added that my clear history on IE is at 0 days and it clears history on LOGGING off.SOL, I believe. Maybe you can google SEARCH for the topic and get LUCKY that way?If you can find it there is an Index.dat file tucked away by Windows/IE which contains a list of ALL the sites you have surfed to going way way back.   Download SuperWinSpy to view the file.  It is NOT deleted by Disk Cleanup etc.  The only prog I know which will deal to it is CCLEANER which flags it for deletion on the next boot.

This particular Index.dat file is Hidden System and cannot be accessed while Win is running - the answer to any attempt to access it is the old In Use error message.

In my system the path/file name is something like - oh God I can't remember - will get back with more info.....

Modifying:   Back from the deep dark recesses of Safe Mode.
I am running XP Home - the path\filename is on my system is

C:\Documents and Settings\name\Local Settings\History\History.IE5\Index.dat

Note that it's History.IE5 even tho' you are using IE6.  MS has never explained what use is made of the file, it seems it's just information gathering...

Good luck

I got new speakers (5.1surround) it has 5 speakers and a sub but only 2 of the speakers and the sub work, does anybody have an idea of what might be wrong?Control panel>Sound & Multimedia>Audio>Sound Playback>Advanced>Speakers Tab.its set on 5.1 but the problem is still here.. only two speakers working. Any other ideas?Your sound card may not be supporting them.
Reinstall driver.
Check compatibility.
Check cabling.Only games and multimedia such as DVD playing software may support 5.1 Not standard Windows sounds.

You will have to find out what WORKS and what doesn't work yourself by trial and error.
nothing at all makes any of the other three speakers work, games,or dvds. one of the other guys said to reinstall the driver...how do you do thatWhat kind of sound card/chip do you have? If not SURE, download Everest Home Edition (free at www.lavalys.com) and search under PCI multimedia.

It may be that the chip does not support that enhanced sound option.  That would be kind of like buying a set of nice, new stereo speakers but you only have a mono output from your tape deck. If it can't do it, it doesn't matter what kind of speakers you have.i have no clue what kind of sound card i have. is there any way of finding out on the computer itself?i cant get that program you were talkin about( dont have INTERNET on that computer)Just find someone who does and have them download and burn to a CD. You can run it from there and it is a small download.

You could go to Control Panel/System/Device Manager and have a look there as WELL. That would be helpful.all that did was make nothing audio work at all.so now i have a new problemYou can't break anything by looking in control panel/device manager as I told you. What was there?GX1_Man broke it!    LOL. Don't scare the lad. He'll be pi**ed off in 5.1 surround sound!lol no now its 0.0 because after i closed the device manager absolutey no sounds is madeOpen it up again and look under sound and game controller and post what is listed there. You may need to reboot the machine first.

Solve : Problem with pop-ups?

Answer»

I have the worst pop-up problem I have ever had. Here's whats going on:
I have comcast high speed internet that is constantly connected. I ran my Yahoo! anti-spy and my McAfee virus scan. Both took off programs, but the pop-ups keep coming. I downloaded registry mechanic and ran that but it didn't help. I did a system restore to before this problem started, and it didn't help. I don't know what else to do. I know something is stuck somewhere, but I'm not sure where. I got a message saying that there was a problem and I tried to fix it, but it didn't help. Daily I get a blue screen of death that shuts down my computer. I'm not sure of what it says totally but its not GOOD. Any ideas of something I can download to fix it or if you have step by step instructions for me I'd appreciate it.What version of Windows? If XP do you have SP2 installed? How about running Ad Aware and Spybot in safe mode? (Both can be downloaded for FREE, just google search for them.)I am running Windows XP without SP2. I have a Dell, and when I installed SP2 on my computer it screwed it up. I will try downloading ad aware, but do I have to be in safe mode for it to work?ada WARE does not prevent pop ups

Solve : 80 gig HD to 55 gig?

Answer»

Last year, I had a friend reformat my computer and he partitioned my HARD drive in two; C: was devoted to system and Windows files and D: was used for storage and such. Before the reformat, my hard drive had a capacity of 80 gigs, however, afterwards the partition, Windows only showed a total of 55 gigs available between the two partitions. I ignored the problem for a very LONG time, until I recently reformatted my computer again. This time through, I erased the partition my friend had made and allowed C: to contain all of the everything- both system files and everything else. I figured that this would rectify the initial mistake my friend might have made, but when I checked the properties of C: in My Computer, it shows the HD as still having a capacity of 55 gigs.

I'm perplexed by this problem and unsure as to why my computer has been missing 25 gigs SINCE the partition. Any help anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Quote

Available is space remaining, not total space.  Out of the 80GB, you had 55GB available (remaining, empty, etc).  25GB was being used.  You may have erased the D-partition, but it is not part of the C-partition until you join them together.  If C now has a total capacity of 55GB, you must  format the remainder which will then be the D- partition of 25GB.

Hello Laura,

You say "erased" when you should have 'deleted' both partitions and made one large one, or sized the partitions to suit your needs.

An 80 GB drive gives 74.51 GB of Binary space which is 76293 MB

An 8 GB C: drive Primary partition would be 8192 MB and a 10 GB drive would be 10240 MB.

After you make the Primary drive you do all your installing from the XP CD and then make an Extended partition using XP's Disk Management.

You then make a Logical (or 3) drives within the Extended partition and format them one at a time.

[Primary]{[Logical 1][Logical 2][Logical 3]}

Where    { ---------------------------- }

... is the extent of the Extended drive partition.Try to forrmat your pc using linux INSTALATION cd .

Solve : Problems while playing...?

Answer»

I have a P4 2.8 GHz, with GeForce 4 Ti 4400 TD128 in it, and 512 MB of DDR.

Now, after a few minutes of playing a game (any game), the sound gets cut off for some reason.

Right after that happens, the monitor begins to flicker...

Then it returns to its original mode, but still- no sound, and the monitor tends to turn off and on every few seconds.

It happens to me in any game, all are games that my computer ALREADY ran smoothly.
The problem just... started... for no obvious reason.

Even ones which aren't very demanding...

When I do regular office work on it, nothing happens.

But every time I play, the problem occures in minutes- not in a specific point of a game- just like that.

Would you help me finding the source of the problem, and fixing it?

Thanks,

GuyGuy...... Does your sound work ok if you play a cd or play a vid clip ?

dl65  Yeah, it works FLAWLESSLY until I play a game...Guy....... Is the cooling fan working ok on the card ......because it almost sounds like as soon as you put a bit of load on the card it's starting to break down....   Do you have another vid card you could swap it with just as a test ?

dl65  Okay, I opened up the computer case, and it SEEMS like the card fan is out of order.
The WHOLE fan area is reaaaally hot, and it doesn't vibrate as it did when it worked...
So thanks, that would PROBABLY be the main source for the problem.
Hope to get a new VGA soon.

Thanks! ^^Guy.... Hopefully all you will have to do is replace the cooling fan ........

dl65  I wouldn't run this system very long like this as you could wind up frying other components such as the MBoard and or the CPU itself...
Those fans aren't difficult to replace at all but get a good one preferably with sealed bearings.

Cheaper than a new CPU for sure.

Solve : bootloader?

Answer»

i have 2 linux OPERATING systems  and i need a simple boot loader (pref like the one with windows) pref off the same hddYou can do this off the hard drive. I thought you wanted to do this off 2 live CDROMS and combine them.

It is easy to do off the hard drive. Each will try to load it's own boot loader - either LILO or GRUB. You can boot multiple operating systems with either.ok....how di i do that?thay both use isolinux as a bootloader   how do i reprogram that?Load one on one partition and LET it install it's bootloader. Load the other on another partition and let it load it's boot loader. The second one will be active and you can choose which os you WANT ot boot. If it does not look like you want you can edit the bootloader file, but you probably won't need to.

You can use the same swap file for both systems.Pity that you can't easily switch from one drive to another without re-booting.Any bootloader requires you to END one operating system to start the other. You don't have to shut off the machine, or even REBOOT the machine.

Even the dearly beloved Windows cannot run two instances of itself at the same time.

If you are using a program like VMWare that will allow you to run an emulation of one OS through another that is another thing altogether, but he was talking about a bootloader, Mac.

Solve : Firewall manual reset?

Answer»

I am WORKING with a Symantec 100 VPN firewall and I am able to connect to it using a web browser. Someone created a PASSWORD for the firewall, but they no longer are working here. The password that they left does not appear to be valid any longer, because when I enter it, the login window simply pops back up. The username is "admin". The only thing that I know to do is to perform a manual reset of the device (by flipping some switches on the back of the firewall). The manual for the firewall says that this will reset the password, the static IP address, and the SUBNET mask of the firewall.
I am afraid, however, that any other configurations that may be in the firewall (open ports, etc.) will be reset as well. The manual does not say anything about whether this will happen or not. Does anyone know if the other settings will be reset?Everything will be reset to factory defaults. Passwords are case sensitive. You might try using caps, non-caps, or a combination to see if anything works. Thanks for your quick response! Yes, I have tried various combinations of the password that I know. Since the manual did not mention resetting settings such as open ports, I was hoping that these settings would not be affected by the reset. From what you are telling me, however, those settings would be reset to the factory defaults, correct? What I am most concerned with would be any NAT tables that may be set up on this firewall. They have a CISCO router, however, so the NAT translations (they have a private IP scope) may be taking place in the router and not the firewall. What do you think?

Solve : scroll lock and power?

Answer»

What is tyhe function of Scroll Lock key and power key?
shouvik...........
The Scroll Lock key has appeared on the keyboards of IBM personal computers since the original 83-key PC/XT and the 84-key AT layouts, and remains on the 101-key and greater "enhanced" keyboards currently in use. The Scroll Lock key wasn't on the original Macintosh keyboards but appears on the Mac's "enhanced" keyboard.

The main intent of the Scroll Lock key was to allow scrolling of screen TEXT up, down and presumably sideways using the arrow keys in the days before large displays and graphical scroll bars. You can see where this might have been handy in the DOS era, when screen output typically was limited to 80 characters wide by 25 rows deep. For some types of programs, spreadsheets being the obvious example, it's still handy now. In Microsoft Excel, Scroll Lock allows you to scroll a spreadsheet with the arrow keys without moving the active cell pointer from the currently highlighted cell. In Quattro Pro, another spreadsheet program, Scroll Lock works in a similar manner, although in CONTRAST to Excel it's not possible to scroll the active cell pointer completely off the screen.

Other programs use Scroll Lock for special functions. It's said (although I haven't personally verified this) that the Linux operating system as well as some early mainframe and minicomputer terminals employed Scroll Lock to stop text from scrolling on your screen in command-line sessions – pausing the scrolling, in effect. The ancient DOS adventure game “Rogue” (one of my all-time favorites) used Scroll Lock to scroll your character’s movement through the ASCII dungeons on the display.  I'm told some computers in the late 1980s used the Scroll Lock key to halt the scrolling of the boot-up messages that appeared when you started the computer. This last use may be apocryphal, as I could find no examples of computers that displayed this BEHAVIOR. The point is, Scroll Lock sometimes does something besides make that LITTLE light light up.

Here's a slick little tip for questions like this ..........
