I have an emachine T2082 with (I think) an AC '97 Audio.  I can hear music played on the computer fine.  But I can not get any SOUND from a line in or microphone using any front or back jack.  I've checked the sound properties and everything is 'on'.  Any suggestions?  Should I just get a standalone sound card?to TEST sound type dxdiag in the run box the jack you should use is a green one at the back and just check that the sound is not MUTED ..on the bottom taskbar should be the speaker icon right click on it and it will show sound volume etc .if not use the recovery disc which will contain audio DRIVERS try re-installing them..and a final check is to go my computer right click properties click it device manager hardware and scroll down to mutimedia icon click the plus sign and see if there are any conflicts  with you audio?hth..I'll try the dxdiag, but I've checked and triple checked all the sound properties.  Nothing is muted or off, all volumes are up.  In the hardware properties, there are no conflicts and all devices are working properly.  Should I just UPGRADE to an actual sound card vs. the onboard?just check the bios del key on boot up and check that the on board sound is enabled properly also you could try removing the on board sound card from the device manager and re-boot and re-install drivers also maybe your headphones may be at fault

So Lets SAY one has duel CHANNEL RAM with a fsb of 333mhz, if you are working with duel channel ram does the FSB INCREASE to 666mhz fsb?

I'm looking for help with the problems I've been having with my CD drives recently, and I'd be grateful for any solutions! Here's the problem:

I have a DVD-Rom drive and a CD-R/RW drive. Recently, the two drives stopped reading discs and they both vanished from "My Computer" - as if they were never there at all!

My DVD-Rom drive still OPENS and the light flashes, but the computer just doesn't seem to realise it's there, while my CD-R/RW drive doesn't work at all.

I rang a computer shop and they told me that I'd have to go out and buy new disk drives, so I did. I bought a DVD-Rom/CD-R/CD-RW drive that connects up via a USB port. This new drive has exactly the same problem! The light turns on, and the tray will open, but that's it - the computer just doesn't realise it's there!!

Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have an application that is SUPPOSEDLY emitting PCL code.  I have a file that supposedly came from this application.  I have to convert to ASCII, have it sent to another computers serial port, and WRITE the ASCII DATA to a file.  I have installed a parallel cable, a parallel to serial converter and then a serial cable going right into a laptop PC running hyperterm.  If I "type filename > LPT1" I see the ASCII on the hyperterm...if I "copy filename lpt1" I see the ASCII on the hyperterm.  Anyone know how to convert a PCL file/string into an ASCII string or write to a file as an ASCII string?

When I try to open a desktop icon, I get a prompt that says it is not a Win 32 APPLICATION?  This just started SHORTLY after I switched to cable internet.  Can anyone please help me figure out a fix to this problem?  Thanks, your help is appreciated.Can you tell us what operating system you are using.  Does this happen when you try to open video or audio files? This happened to me with Windows Media Player, and i re-installed it and they then worked. How do i restore the "windows FLAG icon" in CERTAIN win.ini files?What version Windows are you running? Is there anything in right click/properties? Did you set them to open by default in anything? What icon do they have now?i'm running windows 98SE.  There are no icons on the 3 port files in win.ini that i changed the value from 9600 to 57600 bd.  When I tried to change the value in the modem in controll panel it said i was running at 57600 but in the win.ini file it said 9600 so i changed it there in msconfig/win.ini.

i'm having a problem with my IE.
i'm running windows XP. i came home from a business trip just to find out that there is a problem with my computer that i can't seem to fix.

when i click on my icon for IE, it seems as if the window is going to open and then it just opens for a fraction of a SECOND and then it disappears.

i can't find a solution to this problem... will someone please please HELP me?
Perhaps try repairing IE (I believe in add/remove programs). If all ELSE fall you could alwyas try Firefox (IE problems are annoying, and I hardly ever KNOW how to fix them, so... here you go )

I thought i'd re-post this in CASE anyone wasnt looking at my first post because it already had replies to it, wishful thinking i know. Also it might annoy people.

Does anyone know if it is possible to change the icon of the cd DRIVE, and rename it, because on my computer the name and icon are currently wrong. At the moment the icon is of a smart media card which comes from my card reader, and the name is Smart Media (E:). In My Computer there appear to be 2 smart media removable drives, one of them being the cd drive and the actual smart media drive. It still works just as normal, but its still annoying. This happened when i installed a new cd drive in my computer, after installing an internal card reader in the spare floppy drive bay. The OS is XP. If the icon or the name can't be changed, is there a WAY of reseting it to the correct name and icon? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

It doesn't let you rename it in the normal fashion, and it doesn't let you change the icon in normal fashion either. I did find a way that invovled going into the registry, but i tried it and found the instructions to be, at least in my case, wrong.There is a program out there called michealangelo, Its a Icon maker, that will allow you to change icons. I am not sure exactly where you can find it. Try a google search.try the patch>http://aumha.org/regfiles.htmI found out how to change the icon and name myself in the end, although i managed to change the name, i can't change the icon as i do not know where the default is stored yet. The way to do it was to go into the registry editor (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Explorer\ DriveIcons\ X\ DefaultIcon). For some reason only one drive was listed there, thats why i dont know where the icon is. Hopefully i should find it soon.

This is my first post on this forum.
Basically my pc CRASHED bit time one day and i could not do anything with it. Even XP disc wouldnt do a repair on my hdd. It eventually allowed me to re-install windows on top of my crashed version.
This works great and have no problems with it.

except!.....When trying to ACCESS my old files that are still present on the hdd, it keeps denying me access. I CANT even copy these files to another hdd. I have important work in these files but Xp says 'access denied' file may be in use by another PROGRAM' or words to that effect.

I have tried to access the files through command prompt but still same answer!

How can i remove the top version of xp so i can try and access the files again? Any help will be greatly appreciated guys.

DanI'm not SURE what could be using your files; what application do some of them open in? I assum you're logged in as an admin. One thing you could try is download and burn Knoppix, a free 'live' Linux distro; requires no installation and runs off CD. It may be able to move your files. Remember to back up! Even if it's just burning them on a CD, back your stuff up!

edit: I'm a junior member now! You need to reclaim ownership of the files/folders in question. The old files belong to the old accounts from your previous OS install. Reclaiming ownership is an easy process: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

New digital camera has prompted my first effort to use the 2 USB ports on my Win98, CTX SAK300, AMD K6-2 computer with Biostar M5ALA system board, Award Modular v4.51PG BIOS (5/27/98-ALADDIN5-2A5KKBODC-00) and ALI M1541 rev 4 Chipset.  Motherboard booklet showed USB controller disabled, which I changed to Enabled.  Still, as before, camera knows it is "connected to computer" and SD card reader LED lights up, but computer shows absolutely no sign of recognizing either an imaging devices or new disk drive.  I would really appreciate KNOWING how to get it to do so.  Thanks. Ran hardware wizard, and i have to pick out hard drive from the list.  When it continues the wizard, the wizard says, the device is working properly.

did everything that was listed on that link.  When trying to  change drive letter and PATH, the option isnt avaiable on the "missing drive."    The option is there on working harddrive.    This seems soo strange.

Went to the missing hard drive in computer management, after the status was "online"  went back into computer management, right clicked and went ahead and partitioned.  SET partition to biggest setting, then formatted.   Now the kids have 2 hard drives to mess up!!!!!!!!! LOL

My computer's power supply decided to melt down and the computer will not boot up after the power supply was replaced.  I installed new RAM and CPU, but still would not work.

I installed the hard drive into a separate machine, but the separate machine would not recognize or do anything with the hard drive.  The separate machine would work ok and recognize its hard drive before addition of the hard drive from the melt down computer.

The hard drive had programs and data sensitive to work, but now I cannot access the programs or data.  The hard drive would no spin up when connected to the computer's power supply.

Is there any way I can recover the programs and data from the melt down computer hard drive?
Or is there no way to get the stuff from the hard drive?

I have the BIOS set to auto-detect for hard drives, but that was before the melt-down.  

Now, when I turn on the computer (after a new power supply was installed and properly connected), the BIOS never loads.  It just sits there with a blamk screen amd goes no where fast.

The monitor does work ok when connected to another computer.

The hard drive was set as master on the burnt out computer.  I replaced the good hard drive on the good computer with the burnt-out computer's hard drive.  But the burnt out computer hard drive didn't spin or show any sign than it was connected.  Both power and data cables were connected.  The cables worked ok since they worked ok with the new working hard drive/

I also had two optical disc drives connected to the computer that burnt out.  Before the computer burnt out, the optical drives worked great, reliable reading and writing on the optical drives.  After the burn out, one of the optical drive's tray was forceable ejected by the computer.  I could not close the optical drive door until I unplugged the computer.  The other optical drive did not make its try to force the tray out, but both drives would not work or be rerognized by the burnt out computer or the new working computer.

The RAM CHIP somehow got scrambled.  I replaced the RAM chip with a new working chip, but the system still would not load or work.

I examined the motherboard and CPU (slot A, AMD Athalon), but saw no burn marks or scorches from flame.  I traded the CPU for one I KNEW that works, but still no go.

From what I can GUESS, there was some KIND of surge that wiped the system BIOS and the hard / optical drive bios's.  But that does not explain the lack of the hard drive from spinning when started.

If there were a surge, do you know if the hard drive was erased and the hard drive BIOS ?

Thank you for your assistance.power spikes can ruin your hard drive   you run test on the h/drive ?  the mobo may have also suffered from this surge?>what make is your mobo and hdrive some mobos have a temp shutdown on them in case of power spikes/surges? and most mobos have an install disk for the mobo ?try reseting the jumpers to see if you obtain the bios and also change the cmos battery it may have suffered also? are there any beeps ?if not the mobo may have had it?the lost of bios maybe you need the install disk?suggestionsThe motherboard was  Gigabyte  7iXE.  The hard drives were   Fugitsu 10gigs and a  Maxtor 40gigs.  The BIOS had a date of about 1999 or 2000.  

There are no beeps, be it right after turning on or waiting for 60 minutes after turning it on.
The PC speaker was working before the melt down, so I would hear the beeps if they were there.


Thinking back to when the melt down computer was working, sometimes I had to hard restart the computer when nothing would appear on the screen after booting.

I lost my network CONNECTION when I was purging my PC of a browser hijacker and haven't been able to re-establish my connection.  I'm LOOKING for any suggestions beyond what I've already performed.

Actions leading to situation:  Performed online virus scan with Panda ActiveScan.  After performing this task, I was UNABLE to establish a network connection.

OS: Windows XP Home edition

Actions accomplished:
1.  Verified all cables still connected
2.  Verified ISP service was not down
3.  Disconnected cable modem from wireless router and connected directly to PC
4.  Performed repair FUNCTION under network connection properties
5.  Reinstalled driver to NIC
6.  Tried USB connection from cable modem to PC
7.  Removed all firewalls from PC
8.  Connected laptop to cable modem to verify operation, internet accessed so modem is OK
9.  Tried static IP addresses

Observations:
1.   All actions above did not resolve the problem
2.  Network connection lights on NIC card remain yellow when cable attached
3.  NIC and USB network connections reflect IP Address & Subnet Mask of:
169.254.51.198 and 255.255.0.0 respectively
4.  TCP/IP properties for both connections are set to obtain IP & DNS Address automatically.  DHCP enabled
5.  No network connection through NIC or USB

This should work- assuming that your computer was picking up an IP from DHCP originally.Warren... try this , click start.......then control panel.......
select network connections.

This will open your network manager......
Does your local area connection show ?
If so click on it .
If it isnt there......look over to the left and click on CREATE A NEW CONNECTION .......
This just may solve your dilema.

I finally have the COMPUTER working nicely, but now have nearly a dozen small icons at the bottom left of the screen next to the START button.  There's hardly any room for a web site box to show down there at present.  Any IDEAS how to rid my computer of these icons?  
NOTE:  (1) These same icons are on my monitor in front of my background picture, so I do not need redundancy.  (2)  I also have small icons on the bottom RIGHT side of my screen, next to the time, but these are normal and expected to be there. (3) I run WINDOWS ME.Right-click on an empty area of the taskbar (runs along the bottom of the screen where all the small icons are), select Toolbars and then uncheck the DESKTOP item.

When I try to open Internet Explorer, it prompts me that it encountered a problem and has to shut down and asks if I want to send an error report to Microsoft. I have had this happen before while WORKING in it and it has always opened back up with no problem. Now it will not open at all. I am running Windows 2000. Any solution to this I may be able to do myself?Just reinstall IE 6. that should fix it. If you dont have the installer for IE, open windows explorer (windows button & E) and then in the address bar type the URL of the site you want. if IE still crashed you could either do a windows reinstall or get 'mozilla' a brouser based on netscape. shich usually works just as well and is free.If you could provide us with additional details about the error message such as the error code number, filename, etc, we may also be able to HELP you with the error. Otherwise it may be best to reinstall Internet Explorer.
Please provide STEPS on how to reinstall Internet Explorer 6, I get the error message, "invalid syntax error" when i try to go online. Would reinstalling IE 6 help? I'm  currently using my laptop but cannot get online w/my desktop. Thanks

Unable to boot into Win98SE, I received a "Drive error reading drive C" message after running "scanreg" at the C prompt.
This prompt was forced on me (at the attempted bootup) with the following message: "Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configuration error. Choose, command prompt only, and run SCANREG."
Additionally, each succesive boot attempt freezes in the middle of scandisk, while an independent "rescue disk" disk SCANNER ALSO errored out!
Further, I have been hearing (on and off) clicking sounds which seem to be coming from the Maxtor 60Gig hard drive.
Please confirm for me that my hard drive needs immediate replacement or no!
BUT, even if the hard drive is bad (and needs immediate replacement), why am I not able to reach the "BIOS entry and memory check" area at the initial post?
The screen goes directly from the GATEWAY (mainboard) logo to its attempt to load Win98SE!
These two problems occurred immediately after an electrical outage which lasted only about 3 or 4 seconds, leaving not enough time for me to react fast enough to unplug the computer before the power came back on again (yes, I do have TWO inline surge protectors). What is there to do?
I'm not surprised; my Gateway goes right from Gateway screen to grub (Linux bootloader); to enter BIOS/setup, I believe my key is delete; just try pressing buttons before Windows comes, and you can always try burning and booting to a Knoppix Linux CD:

I was looking for updates to excel and now i can not even OPEN excel because it wants to install and ask for the cd, when i place the cd in it STILL says it is the wrong program. JeaniePlace the Excel or Office CD 1 in the CD drive, and select repair from the installation MENU. Updates will need to be reinstalled.By the way, Windows XP SP2 is barely in beta; that was Office SP3 you installed. You should probably only have WinXP SP1.Thanks everyone I got it fixed...

how to prevent batch2.bat's execution if the batch1.bat is not finished

there is a way to return parameter from a bat file? i.e. the batch1.bat can return some parameter to bat caller after its execution ?

I need to run some rotines in batch1.bat but JUST these COMMANDS is finished that batch2 must start...

Give me a little more detail wht you want your batch file to do and I can help.Have batch1.bat create a flag file (i.e. C:\temp\batch1.err) when it does not complete. Then check for the existence of that file before running batch2.bat.  Make sure batch1.bat insures the flag file does not exist when it starts, if so delete it.Ok, it should look something like this but I don't know how to actually get this task ACCOMPLISHED:

I have Epson Stylus 825 printer loaded with driver and programs that came with printer. When I turn on computer I get Found New Hardward Wizard with following msg: Cannot install this HARDWARE: Epson SP825 Storage USB Device. Error msg is: One of the filterdrivers installed for this device is invalid. I have contacted Epson customer service and they have had me UNINSTALL and reinstall software several times always with the same result. I have downloaded most RECENT software from their web site, uninstalled and installed with the same result. The printer seems to be working OK.  Can anyone offer a solution? For about 6-7 months now I've had a real bad problem with my XP. Whenever I boot it, 9 out of 10 times it will "skip" around. Now by skipping i mean the mouse will move normal, freeze up, then shoot ahead. Same thing happens with typing or trying to run any program, and it also makes the booting VERY long, so I have to sit here for nearly an hour sometimes rebooting the computer until it boots normal...

Anyone know why this might be happening or how to fix it?Jerry,

Sounds like you might have either;
1) IRQ conflicts
2) XP loaded on an older incompatible mother board
3) a bad ram stick
4) and Auriel Vortex sound card.

Have you tried a repair install? :-/I'm not sure what IRQ means, but the motherboard is an MSI one that was new when I got the computer a little over a year ago (in fact, just about everything was new when I got it last Christmas). I had just recently replaced my ram, but I still have the problem, and I don't have that sound card.

I've also formatted and reinstalled windows about 4-5 times since I've had the computer, but the problem is still there. Someone at work today suggested it might be a faulty fan and the computer overheating, yet sometimes it can run for days, and reboot fine, while other times it will remain off for a day or so, then have trouble booting..

Who makes the comp? If it is a Gateway, then it might be an overheating problem. I have replaced the power supply (which contains the fan) on my Gateway three times - all under warranty.

When I click the properties button after selecting a

calibrate my controlers. I have Win 98 SE, and I have two different game devices. I have a CH EXL500 racing set, and an Interact ProPad 6, and they both give me this problem. I have reinstalled my divers for both controlers a couple times, and I still get the same message when I go to

Thing is when I go to try and change the drivers for this thing, I go to look and it isn't in there. Something tells me I am missing a major componant!

This is a bit risky, but try uninstalling the Standard PC driver in the Device Manager. You should find this directly under Computer. This will remove the current HAL driver and force a redetect/reinstall upon boot up. This will cause all devices to be redetected.

Is there someone on this forum who really understands HIJACKTHIS LOGS and how to interpret them? I'm not qualified myself, but I do know that...in case of a hijacked browser...nothing should be deleted (including by Spybot, AdAware, etc) before posting a log and having it read.

and then the text and CTRL + Z.

But, how can you do in a .bat file to create several FILES without having to type CTRL+Z every TIME? Is it possible?

Hello everyone. can anyone tell me how to store all my photo's in one file and have them all opening with one program? and if so which program would be best. I seem to have my photo's all over the place!
When I use my photo EDITOR some of my photo's are there and some are not, the file says in "documents & setting" I have a group of photo's in my camera I want to put on the computer but have not as I may end up with yet another place to find them!

I have windows xp on my inspiron 5100. We have WIRELESS dsl and when I go online to surf or search MANY many times when I click on a site or google I am switched to 'working offline'. When i click on the item again I recieve a box that says "You are currently working offline to access page please click CONNECT." I click connect and it says working offline. I then go to the file button and uncheck the work offline . Then I try again and it goes back to working offline. Sometimes this happens as soon as I go online other times it will be minutes or maybe an hour but it will always happen. This does not happen when I am USING a dial up connection at home. Is this in my computer or SOMETHING to do with the dsl connection. I see nothing that has to do with working offline settings and i am tierd of always having to restart in the middle of work. Any ideas? :-/

I abs love the action and feel that that style of keyboard has.  

I was searching around to find a keyboard manufacturer that makes a keyboard that has a similar action for PC desktop use.

There's no parental controls installed, CORRECT? Does the computer do this with all programs you try to install, or just one specifically?

Yes it does to all the window i try to installIt just means your account isnt setup for adminstrative privlages to fix it use a administrator screen name or ANOTHER admin screen name open up your user accounts and adjust the settings to give you full access. Did you check to make sure your account wasnt LIMITED or guest. Windows 2000 has alot of OPTIONS to chose from so im just judging by there. If you have only one screen name there then you can use safemode. Safemode should be able to show the user screen name of Administrator.. hope it does it did for em once. and just use the same pass as the orginal pass you set up with your account with and if it doesnt have a pass then you should be able to get in easily.

If one screen name is messed up delete and recreate it of course if you delete and recreate your scrren name then all the orginal settings on the other accounts will be deleted alsoAhem... The administrative account CAN have parental controls on it. There obviously isn't on your computer. Are there other users on this computer?

BB. I would never use Cat4 Cat5 either. At least cat5e...for the safe networking. Get RID off cat4 asap and think of cat 5 too..

Not sure whether this query is hardware or software related so will try here.

IBM PC300GL, Intel Pent 166mhz, IBM Bios (1997), Win.98se, 48mb RAM.  (Still running like new).

At bootup got error messages that (a) the configuration had changed and (b) there were floppy disk errors.  No beeps, bangs or any other error indications.

Checked Bios and found settings for 3-1/2" 1.44mb floppies had been changed to 5.25" floppies and that the MONITOR type had been changed to some outlandish breed.  Reset the bios settings and cold booted.  Same messages, same changes to bios.  Tried several times both cold & warm booting.

Tried booting from a bootdisk and got same problems.  Allowing the boot to continue showed that there was no floppy drive setup.  Unplugged & replugged the floppy drive & checked all cabling, still no joy.

Finally changed the floppy drive to using a known "good" one and hey presto no more problems.

Now the question:  Why would a hardware failure cause bios settings to be changed?

Glad to hear it's working for you.A model of that vintage should be long overdue for a new battery anyway. Sometimes settings will not hold, etc. I have seen a lot of strange things. Has it ever been changed? It's real easy on those models.

There may have been an updated BIOS for that particular model. It may not be available on the IBM/Lenovo web site anymore, but you could CHECK that as well. This may have been some sort of BIZARRE known issue that was later corrected, or just some aberration. As long as it works, though.Thank you both.  I never thought about default bios settings if the floppy drive is not detected.

I'll have a look around for a new battery though sorta doubt if the model in use is still available.  The battey has never been changed & there are no indications of any problems caused by it.

Ditto with the bios update, Everest doesn't give any number identification just IBM and date.

Thanks againRadio Shack will have what you need for about $5-10. It is a standard CMOS battery for those.

Just make sure you reinstall the new one RIGHT side up! Check with the old battery for a + marking.
