MODERN'S abc OF MATHEMATICS-IX5. If an angle differs from its complement by 10째, findthe angle.

Answer»

sum of complimentary angles = 90

let one angle be x , then other angle will be x+10

=> x+x+10 = 90=> 2x = 90-10 = 80=> x = 80/2 = 40°

so, angles are 40° and 40+10 = 50°

12.

3. Why was Northern India greatly influenced by Muslim cxlture?

Answer»

Except for Jammu & Kashmir none of these regions have Muslim majority.Yet some of these states have significant Islamic cultural influence because of years of Muslim rule. It is natural that however a person resists or how much ever they try to not modify their culture, cultural influences of those that are in power can easily influence others.

It was the same thing that happened when the British ruled. There was a significant influence on Indian culture. This is the same with Islamic culture and this is also true when Buddhist ideas were adopted to Hinduism during Ashoka's rule and even when Puranic ideas were absorbed over Vedantic ideas during Gupta's rule.

Inspite of states like Kerala, Assam or Bengal having a even higher Muslim population, the center of power was less in the hands of Islamic rulers compared to the core of North India. So you can find Muslims in these states closer to local cultural practices than the Islamic culture.

Another factor is that UP, Delhi and Punjab used to have a significant Muslim population. But after partition the numbers decreased steeply. So though these states seem to have less Muslim population today, Islamic culture influence is still significant.

In fact in places like Gujarat, Kerala and West Bengal where Islam traditionally spread via trade exchanges, those Muslims adopted local cultural practices while Islam that spread under Muslim rulers had influence the other way round.

If x 2/3 andxand b0, find the values of aICBSE 2016]-3 are the roots of the equation ax2 +7x +b

Answer»

Given the roots are 2/3 and -3 so sum of roots = 2/3-3 = (2-9)/3 = -7/3 = -7/a (from question) so a = 3. and product of roots = 2/3*(-3) = -2 =b/a (from question) so, b = -2*3 = -6.

34.

Find two consecutive odd integers such that two-fifth of the smaller exceeds two-ninth of the greater by 4.

Answer»

Let x be the smaller odd integer and (x + 2) be the greater odd integer respectively.2/5th of the smaller odd integer exceeds 2/9th of the greater odd integer by 4.

So, according to the question.

2x/5 = 2/9*(x + 2) + 4⇒ 2x/5 = (2x + 4)/9 + 4Taking L.C.M. of the denominators of the right side, we get.2x/5 = (2x + 4 + 36)/9

Now, cross multiplying, we get.⇒ (2x*9) = 5*(2x + 40)⇒ 18x = 10x + 200⇒ 18x - 10x = 200⇒ 8x = 200⇒ x = 200/8⇒ x = 25Putting the value of x, we getx + 225 + 2 = 27So, the smaller integer is 25 and the greater odd integer is 27

35.

The slenderness ratio of a compression member is:

Answer»

Slenderness ratio is the ratio of the length of a column and the least radius of gyration of its cross section. Often denoted by lambda.

It is used extensively for finding out the design load as well as in classifying various columns in short/intermediate/long.

Example-Short Steel column - lambda is less than 50.Intermediate - 50 -250Long - 250 above.

Why this is important? - Long columns under compression can fail via both buckling (bending side ways) as well as crushing. Various formulas to calculate such failure characteristics extensively use the use of this ratio.
