simultaneous equation

Answer»

Simultaneous Equations

Simultaneous equations and linear equations, after studying this section, you will be able to:

solve simultaneous linear equations by substitutionsolve simultaneous linear equations by eliminationsolve simultaneous linear equations using straight line graphs

If an equation has two unknowns, such as 2y + x = 20, it cannot have unique solutions. Two unknowns require two equations which are solved at the sametime (simultaneously) − but even then two equations involving two unknowns do not always give unique solutions.

4.

7.

Solve the following linear equations by using graphical method\frac{x}{2}+\frac{2 y}{3}=-1 \text { and } x-\frac{y}{3}=3

Answer»

By elimination method x/2 + 2y /3 = - 1 ………..(1) x – y/3 = 3 ………..(2)

Multiplying equation (1) by 2, we obtain

x + 4y/3 = - 2 ………(3) x – y/3 = 3 ………..(2)

Subtracting equation (2) from equation (3), we obtain

5y /3 = -5

Divide by 5 and multiply by 3 we get

Y = -15/5 Y = - 3

Substituting in equation (2), we obtain

x – y/3 = 3 ………..(2) x – (-3)/3 = 3 x + 1 = 3 x = 2

Hence our answer is x = 2 and y = −3

By substitution method x – y/3 = 3 ………..(2)

Add y/3 both side we get x= 3 + y/3 ……(4)

Plug this value in equation (1) we get

x/2 + 2y /3 = - 1 ………..(1) (3+ y/3)/2 + 2y /3 = -1 3/2 + y /6 + 2y/3 = - 1

Multiply by 6 we get 9 + y + 4y = - 6 5y = -15 Y = - 3 Hence our answer is x = 2 and y = −3

a. What is meant by radioactivity?

Answer»

Radioactivity is a nuclear reaction of “spontaneous decomposition”. This means that an unstable nuclide decomposes into a more stable one, while at the same time emitting “radiation”. The daughter nuclide that results from this disintegration might not be stable, and thus disintegrates into a third one, which can then continue the process until a stable nuclide is finally produced. The successive nuclides from a group of disintegrations that conform a radioactive series or family.

Elements with a high atomic number such as uranium , thorium , radium have a property of spontaneously emitting invisible , highly penetrating and high energy radiation. This property is called radioactivity.
