Solve : Spilled Liquid on Laptop...Motherboard Crash??

Answer»

So the other night I was using my old laptop, an IBM t22. I was also enjoying a delicious beverage (uh...beer, if you must know). One thing led to another and I managed to score a direct hit to my keyboard. I IMMEDIATELY turned the thing off, flipped it upside down, and tried to dry the thing as best I could. I left it in a flipped position overnight, but when I turned it on in the morning it wouldn't boot. When I turned it on, the drives still spun up as normal, lights flash as normal, and I still got the IBM 'welcome SCREEN' before windows starts (it's windows 98). The screen I get looks something similar to this picture, even though its not my model:

The options in the lower right say to press F1 to enter the BIOS and F12 to choose temporary boot device. I can't get into either option and after a few seconds of holding at that IBM screen, it goes to a black screen. I've tried putting in a SPARE t22 keyboard I have around, but to no avail, leading me to think this is something much more serious.

When switching over to the new keyboard, I found that there wasn't REALLY that much damage on the motherboard itself. Just a two or three small drops of stickiness which I cleaned with water and a Q-tip, then let dry for 24 hours. No luck there either. Any suggestions would be appreciated because I was hoping to play around with Linux on this thing. Did I fry it? I know it's old, but we've gone through a lot together I would check the memory FIRST. Problem is if it shorted out any onboard
integrated item.....I better not say....trouble with beer it is sugary and sticky. If it hit the motherboard or any internal circuitry when power was on, oh dear! Many workplaces ban drinks near PCs especially laptops because the damage can be very expensive to repair. Your old pal might have gone to be with Computer Jesus.

Solve : Video or HDD problem?

Answer»

Hi ^^ First post WOOT!

Anyways, onto the problem. Today when I got home from summer school, my dad asked me if I knew what was wrong with their computer (I am currently on my own). The computer has been RUNNING perfectly fine since they had it. No problems or anything. My parents do not download stuff and my sisters only use the net for MYSPACE. My dad did a normal shutdown last night before he went to bed (start menu -> shutdown).

Their computer is a eMachines, 1.8 GHz AMD Sempron with 512 RAM, currently running Windows XP SP2. I turned on their computer and It didn't make the usual noises it did when it starts up and the monitor was turned on, but the power light was flashing as if there was no signal. I checked all of the connections and plugged in the power cords into another outlet, but still no luck. I also opened up the case and removed all of the PERIPHERALS and plugged them back in. Still no luck.

Apon further inspection, I noticed that when the computer starts up, the HDD LED light doesn't flash, so I know it's not loading... I've also tried other monitors and I've moved the computer to another location in our house, but when I did that, the computer didn't even boot up >.< I was going to attempt to add a new GFX card but the xtra I had was not PCI express so it didn't work >>

What really annoys me though, is that I've taken a computer engineering class at high-school last year and I still cannot figure out the problem. I've googled, I've looked on other forums, but still no luck >>

So now I'm TURNING to the experts and hoping that I can fix my moms computer before she explodes...

Thank you in advance ^^I am thinking CMOS battery,or PSU.

You can get another CMOS battery for
about 5 dollars least expensive trial
and error approach.Alrighty, I'll try that, Thanks ^^

Solve : problems with a custom built PC?

Answer»

I have a custom built computer that my BROTHER built and gave to me. I did change the videocard since I got it.. Anyway the problem I am haveing is It suddenly stopped working. I had it running and the sound card came loose from the slot so I took the side panel off and put the sound card back where it goes. Now when I plug it back in and flip the power switch on back the fans automatically COME on and stay on unless I hit the power switch. They used to only run when the computer was on. The biggest problem is now the computer itsself wont come on. Just the fans. I know the fans are connected through the MB so the MB CANT be FRIED. I tried takeing the sound card out thinking maybe it was bad but it still wont boot back up. I tried takeing out every PCI/AGP thing one at a time to see if any where the problem. Still nothing. I CHANGED the MB batterie and still nothing. I have plenty of power from the power supply.

what would cause the fans to be stuck on but the computer itsself not work?

Solve : Monitor not working...need help!?

Answer»

I have a computer that i built myself a couple of years ago that i am giving to my grandparents now that i am moving away. I had to get it fixed up becuase the POWER source blewbut once a new fan and power source were put in everything seemed to be working great.

Yesterday i WENT to hook the computer up for them and set up their e-mail. I hooked everything up, started the computer and everything was working perfectly. I was in the process of setting up their Email when the computer RESTARTED (i idn't get a blue screen or anything). The two dos start up pages SHOWED up, and then the screen went blank. It was not able to get to the widows start up page before this happened The Monitor was still on and so was the computer (i could hear it processing). I tried adjusting the monitor, pressing enter on the keyboard, and everything else i could think of with no avail. I restarted the computer again, and the same thing happened.

I also tried to hook the computer up to another older monitor and nothing even showed up on the screen.

I am really UPSET about this especially since i ahve an excellent video card (an ATI All-In-Wonder).

Anyone know what the problem may be?

Solve : 9pin serial port?

Answer»

well i have a problem with my 9-pin serial port. ive got this flying instructor aero-guidance or SOMETHING and it requires a SOFTWARE adapter. I got one in the package and its a 9-pin and 25-pin. my computer wont pik it up for some reason. PLZ help........A 9 pin to 25 pin adapter is not software and will not be detected by the computer as new hardware. It is a simple plug in device that converts the 9 nine arrangement to a 25 pin arrangement, just like some external modem cables. The computer detects serial ports as COM ports. Shut the computer down, hook up the device, then reboot and load any necessary DRIVERS.

Solve : Selling Self-Builds?

Answer»

Hi

Do any of you guys build and sell self-built systems?

If so, particularly if you are in the UK, where do you BUY the parts from? Just any retailer (online or not) or through a WHOLESALE supplier?

I do...

I'm not UK based, though...

I get a lot of the parts I use from affiliations...because I save and also make money that way.

Best bet is to find a wholesale distributor online that's either UK-based or ships Internationally.
Thanks

I build a lot of systems for me and family/friends, but OBVIOUSLY I just buy the parts through retail shops... It's ALWAYS something I thought would be fun to do in my spare time and make money off of. I also do favors for family and friends...they only pay for parts, though.

If you have to buy retail...you can always MARK the price up a few...just so you can make a few bucks...

Solve : shutdown?

Answer»

Hi,
i was wondering if there is any option on my computer(IM using xp and fedora') where i can turn the computer off automatically, like after 10 min or 20 min........Use the Power Options in your CONTROL Panel.ther is only a standby option ...
i wanted a shutdown option...
what ll happen if i use the..
turn off HARD disc option ...(say after 10 min)_;;
Why not just configure your computer to automatically GO into hibernation:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/maintain/powermgmt.mspxbtw, turn off hard disk doesn't turn off your computer, it just stops information TRANSFER to and from the hard disk in the time the computer is on, until woken up

Solve : Computer Will Not Boot, No Beep At The Beginning And No Display?

Answer»

My computer has been working SINCE last night (no reason why). It would not give any beep to show that it was good loading and it did not give a picture to the screen. I then went and checked everything to see what was causing the problem. The first thing I tried was the ram which the computer doesn't even get far enough to detect the ram not being there (no spasmodic beeping). I then checked the HD and the CD Drive which both are working and make the proper noises when starting up (cd drive opens up and everythng and hard drive boots). The I tried the CPU by swapping my Pentium D 805 with my older Pentium 4 3.2 ghz cpu, this did not work EITHER. I tried the PSU to see if this was the problem but it was booting everything up so there was no trouble there either. The motherboard seems to be working because it GETS all of the fans to start up and it seems to detect the CD Drive and HD. Last but not least, the Video card was taken out and tested but that doesn't work either. I'm in desperate NEED, any suggestions would be appreciatiated.
Thank you for your time.Okay, you are down to resetting your CMOS/BIOS to defaults
by removing the CMOS Battery for a few minutes then re-install
it and try to boot.

nope didnt do nethingWell, do you also have onboard video ?

Did you check the PSU,or try another one?i have not yet checked the psu but it is only about 3 weeks old and has worked up until then, it also turns everything on (the fans spin, the hd boots, the cd drive opens and closes, and I can power up from the case. It just will not post.

Solve : Auto shut off??

Answer»

my moms computer keeps shutting off on its own. She will turn it on and then within a few minutes it will just shut down. What would make this happen and what can i do to stop it?
Thank anyone for any asistance with tese 2 issues! Sounds like a heat problem. Check the fans on the power supply / CPU / case cooling. Are they all running?

Alan <>< There are many possibilities why this could be happening...it could be hardware or software related. Let's look at the simplest fix first...but please answer a few questions for me.

How old is this computer? What kind of computer does your mother have? Isi it a desktop or laptop? What's the operating system it's running? Has there been any recent hardware or software changes?

1) Try cleaning the vents and inside the computer with compressed air...not a vacuum cleaner. Make sure the computer is unplugged from its power source. ALSO...make sure it is disconnected from the rest of the computer peripherals.

2) Open the case and blow out all the dust and dirt. This MAY be causing it to overheat. Take care not to touch anything...just blow it out. You'll need to protect the components from ESD (Electrostatic Discharge). Static electricity can frie a motherboard...so be careful.

Please POST youre results...okay?

I have had what sounds like exactly the same problem, so I shal post the details here rather than create a new thread
Start a new thread mcdonger, your problem is REBOOTING and Hey_girlblue's problem is shutting down, there's a big difference.Does the computer shut down, as in you get the Windows screen saying "windows is shutting down" or does it just turn off? That will narow it down as to wether it's software or hardware.

Solve : Riddle me this..?

Answer»

I am very confused. I got up and I come back to my computer, I SIT down, and then it shuts off. I try to TURN it back on, and it starts to for no more than a second, and it shuts down again. I know there's power to the motherboard becasue my RemoteStart light on my MOBO is on. I'm not sure if there is a short, but if there is, I have no idea what would casue it. I have a Fortron FSP SAGA AX400-PN 400W ATX12V 2.0 20/24PIN Power Supply, Asus K8N-VM Motherboard, 1GB RAM, 80 GB SATA Hard Drive.

Any advice, diagnosis would be appricated.

its probably overheating and turning off to protect the computer

I agree. Most systems now have at least some kind of overtemp protection. Try cleaning out the fans a bit maybe or see if you can increase the airflow inside the tower.I just cleaned out my PC with my air can, and still the same problem. I tried to reset my BIOS just to cover that corner, and still nothing. Any other advice, or should I just LEAVE it off for a while?Quote from: ECartman2007 on July 02, 2007, 03:46:11 PM

Just an update, I did the Pin test (unplug from mobo, stick a pin in the green wire and ground) on my power supply, and it worked, everything that was connected to it(CD-ROM drive, hard drive) worked. It has also been around 3-4 hours since this incident happened. Does it usually take this long for an overheated computer to cool down? I cleaned it twice since with an air can aswell.

RichardSorry to sound all needy, but I really need some advice on what the problem is. I left my PC alone, unplugged EVERYTHING from it for the night, and it still doesnt work. I'm starting to think that the mobo just fried on me. I really hope that is not the case. I need to know becasue I am leaving for college in 2 months, and I need to know if I need another computer or not to be ordered.

Thank You

RichardQuote
I tried to reset my BIOS just to cover that corner, and still nothing.

So you can boot up to the Bios? We need to know exactly where the boot stops, as this has a lot to do with what may be wrong. Before assuming the MBoard is dying i would borrow a known good PSU of equal or greater wattage and swap it in there to see if this is the issue.
If so don't buy a cheap one to replace it.Alright, now this confuses me even more. I tested on old PSU and it works only when the ATX12V 4 -Pinb connecter on the other side of the Processor is unplugged. It actually turns on, but I have no picture on my moniter. But when I plug the 4-pin connecter in, it goes back to turing on for a split second. Also, to answer Dam1an question, I DONT get any picture, it literally starts for no more that a second, then it shuts down. Any other advice?

RichardJumpering leads is not an accurate way to test a PSU...The below links are an idea for testing your PSU.

maybe youre infected with virus. theres no other way than to reformat the PC.
His problem is happening before any software is loaded. Definately not a virus. The way his computer is acting, he couldn't reformat if he had to.

If you can, try a friend's PSU and see if it works. If so, you need a new PSU. If not, I might suggest replacing the battery on the motherboard. Most Bios programs will still work even with a dead battery, just not keep time/date. But some simply cease to function. Worth a shot, the batteries are like a buck or two lol.

Solve : No disk drive found?

Answer»

My sister has a Compaq 2810CL laptop. The laptop STARTED acting up and her husband fooled around in the Bios, then tried to do a "restore" of the OS, and now...

...the OS cannot be reinstalled because 'set-up' cannot find the internal hard disk. I have rebooted the laptop, clicked F2, and got into the BIOS Setup Utility. In the "Main" tab it indicates there is no internal disk drive. Somehow, my brother-in-law managed to make a faux paux that I am trying to fix, so that I can restore the OS. However, I have been unsuccesful.

Help! Anything would be appreciated.

1. There could be other options in the BIOS pertaining to the hardware. Try looking in the Boot tab in the BIOS and there should be something about hard drives in there.

2. If you THINK ur up to it, try opening up the laptop and checking the connection to the hard drive. the hard drive caddy (the thing holding the hard drive) might be able to just pull out of the side or bottom of the laptop as well, so look for that first before diving into a mess of PCBs and wires.take it carefully and patiently if you rush at it that is not good, make notes of what you see on the screen use the "Pause/ Break" button to pause the screen during boot up.
1st
switch the laptop on holding down the "F10" key, this should get you into the bios, on the screen you should see a choice for default settings which should reset the bios to a normal unchanged routine, then try a restart.
2nd
if that does not work again "F10" into the bios in the second page tab you should see a boot list make sure the first boot device is the hard drive, second cd/dvd, and third floppy. then try a restart.
3rd
try "F10" again and carefully go through all the bios items, look for hard drive and boot items, make sure that the laptop is not set to boot from a cd or usb or other device. and that power saving or hibernation has not been set up
It may be that the hard drive has packed up or another problem like overheating has caused damage, when it starts is the cooling fan running?
if the laptop is booting at all can you see what is showing on the screen does the CPU show then the drives and ram 256mb or 512mb should be showing.
the hard drive is in a sloted location in the bottom probably using one screw to hold its cover on, check that it is in the connector, also locate the ram also in the bottom make sure that is slotted in correctly
Thanks so much for your kind assistance; however, when the laptop boots up, all I get is a black screen with a messages in this order:

Initializing MBA: Ctrl + Alt + B to configure...
Argon PXE Boot Agent v2.01 (BIOS integration)
Pre-boot Execution Environment
PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, Check Cable
Operation System not found

I tried Ctrl + Alt + B and a window came up that stated:
Config Message: Enabled
Message Timeout: 3 Seconds
Boot Failure Prompt: Wait for timeout
Boot Failure: Next boot device

I have options to change, escape, restore previous settings, and to move the cursor

Frankly, I am at a loss. Unfortunately, my brother-in-law tried to so an OS restore, after playing in the BIOS (He has not expertise whatsoever), and somehow, he did something in BIOS that caused it not to recognize the Hard Disk Drive. I have pulled the laptop apart, and the hard drive is connected.

Oh gosh, Help!

Thanks,
Lucretia
Well, I restarted this laptop and clicked ESC. I got the "Boot Menu" window, and it looks like this:

1. Removable Devices
2. CD-ROM Drive
3. +Hard Drive
4. Built-In Lan

When I arrow down and click on +Hard Drive, I get the black screen with "Operating System not found" again.

When I arrow down and click on "Enter Setup", I get the PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility. On the "Main" tab, under "Internal Hard Disk", it says "None". If I tab over to the "Tools" tab, there is a "Hard Drive Self Test". When I click on it, though, it tells me there is no hard drive disk. Whether I try to run the hard drive self test or not, I am unable to arrow forward or backward to any of the other tabs. It is like it is frozen. The tabs I have on the BIOS Setup Utility screen are: Main, ADVANCED, Tools, Security, Boot, Exit. I cannot arrow beyond "Tools".

This is a mystery, but I am unwilling to give up. Gosh, I wish I knew what my bro-in-law did so I could reconstruct this 'crime'.

Any help will be APPRECIATE greatly.

Thanks.

You may be blaming your BIL unfairly. Hard drives do fail, and laptop drives lead a harder life than most. You say that the machine started acting up. Your BIL may have entered the bios and found the same as you did. You cannot change any BIOS settings such that the hard drive will never, ever be recognised again.

I have noticed a phenomenon which i call "hardware failure denial" where people will do prolonged tinkering with software, perform the most AMAZING mental gymnastics and blame hurling to avoid facing the fact that a drive or the memory has crapped out.

Read the messages on the boot screen again.

ah yes, i have went through denial, especially when my fx5200 died. Even though it had to be one of the worst cards out on the market, it was the best one i've had at all

hey, i've noticed that you said the laptop was "acting up". Any specific symptoms?Well, I am not giving the BIL a hard time. In fact, I gave my sister and BIL a brand new laptop over the weekend. Still, I would like to get this one resurrected. So...

...it may be worst fear, then - the hard drive disk. Well, laptop hard drives are pretty inexpensive. My only issue now is to get the original hard drive to slide out of the casing. it should, and I have unscrewed every single screw on this laptop, and the thing will not budge.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks so much,
Lucretia

Solve : Data Not Accessible?

Answer»

What?

A Linux program works with windows? No. The Linux program runs on it's own...it will however give you access to the hard drive to see if the data is still intact...No. It boots linux, but will mount the drive and allow you to work with the data. It will boot and run directly from the CD.

Edit: I'm a day late and dollar short. I simply must take typing lessons. How a Corrupted USB Drive Was Saved by GNU/Linux

http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8366

Quote

My USB drive is a Lexar Media USB Jumpdrive Pro 2.0 (512 MB). I was working
on it in a COMPUTER with Windows 2000 and logged off before
ejecting the drive. Next time when I tried to use it,
it showed up as a Removable drive rather than the usual
Lexar Media drive and when I tried to open it, it said the
drive was not formatted; and under Properties, 0 bytes free
and used space and file system "RAW"
According to Lexar tech support, there is a bug with
Windows 2000 (that MS never bothered to fix) and can corrupt
the drive when it is removed without proper eject. They
recommend EasyRecovery Pro for data recovery which did
allow me to recover some files (> 500) using their RAW data
recovery program (all other TOOL failed because usually
said "no recognizable file on disc"). Unfortunately,
all the file names are lost and some files are gone.

I'm sorry I took so long to post this but, because of a great fear of lossing all my data, I put this problem on hold for a while.

Finally after getting over my fears, I tried the 'GetDataBack' program. I'm ecstatic! It seems I recovered everything. I was hoping to recover my data without spending money but, I broke down and bought this program out of desperation. GLAD I Did.

I am one happy customer. Glad to hear you got it back...now it's time to develop a good solid backup strategy.

Stop by for some good advice from the crew...Yes, it is an excellent program. I have used it a couple times myself.

As for the problem, I believe that when the drive dismount error occurs, it corrupts the format data on the hard drive, making it unreadable. The data on the drive is not actually damaged most times and easily recovered. That's also how you can still get files back you delete with the same program. When you delete a file, Windows doesnt actually "erase" the information. Rather, it takes the tag off the front of it that keeps the hard drove from overwriting on it. As long as it hasn't been OVERWRITTEN, you can recover it.

Today's TIDBIT brought to you by the letters G and C, and the number 8.I believe you are RIGHT Dam1an. I think it was a dismount error that caused all my woes.

And patio, I KNOW you are right. I'm going to improve my backup strategy starting . . . now!

Solve : PLEASE help!!! No sound device being read by pc!?

Answer»

I recently bought a Dell Dimension E521 with the new windows vista on it.Vista was too hard for my mother to understand and work, and I actually wasnt too impressed by it, so I Erased the hard disk, and reinstalled Windows XP on it(with SP2) and now it is not reading my sound card.I have a sigmatel sound card. I have dowloaded the drivers from dell, but it did no good. All the sound card is showing under my hardware list is ' pci device". I have tried everything I know.Anyone got any ideas??? Have you RUN the Add New Hardware Wizard from the Control Panel?

You can let Windows search for drivers or specify the location of the driver manually.I have already done all that, and even with the driver downloaded from delll and I specified the folder it still doesnt want to recognize the sound card. Its like its not even there. I am wondering if the card is compatible with xp or is more towards vista? Did the sound card come with the computer or was it added aftermarket? It came with the computer.I had the same problem with an old IBM pl300 but it was easy to resolve once I downloaded the driver. As soon as i installed the driver, the PC automatically installed the soundcard. This sound card on the dimension e521 was the one built in by dell. The PC is brand new, but I did not like vista.I tried it for over a month and decided to swith back to XP PRO. I am pulling my hair out, I have built several pc's and never had a problem that I couldnt fihure out, But this really is stumping me!!! I've been to the Dell site and seen the driver there for your Sigmatel sound card.

I can't be 100% sure, but it may not install itself automatically like most other software does.

You may have to figure out where the driver installed itself and manually run the Install New Hardware Wizard and direct Windows to the proper location to install your driver.

There's PROBABLY a Dell/Driver directory on your local drive where you can find the driver...so tell windows to look there. Again...it depends on where the driver was installed when you unpacked the download from the Dell Support page.

If worse comes to worse...you may need to contact Dell. We all know how much fun that is.

I'm assuming this computer is still under warranty?

Good luck.Yeah it was but dell didnt like the idea that I downgraded to xp, they said i should have shipped it back to them and let them instal xp for me(of course for over $100) and they kind of got crappy. I have the driver, and when it unzipped it said some files could not be unzipped, and then after all was done it said the driver was not supported by my system. My sound card is Sigmatel 9227 CODEC (7.1 Channel audio). I just dont understand. I have directed the install hardware wizard to both the dell folder and the folder the driver was ibstalled on. Would i need to maybe unistall the unknow pci device, then reinstall it? I have all the audio codecs showing on the list, but no device.Like I said dell didnt like it when I told them I erased the HD and reinstalled XP myself. Thanks for all your help man, but I am still so stumped. I t has benn driving me crazy for 3 days! I am a bug gaming fan and MUSIC collector,, and cant do either!
What you can probably try is this:

1) Download the driver to your Desktop.

2) Shutdown your computer...and unplug it from all peripherals, as well as disconnecting the power cord.

3) Press the power button in on your computer and hold it in for about 10 seconds to duscharge any remaining electricity from the motherboard.

4) Open your case and remove the sound card...making sure you protect the computer from ESD...Electrostatic discharge. Touch the exposed metal on the case...to protect static electricity from damaging your printed circuit boards.

5) Plug eveything back in and boot the computer back up.

6) Unpack the driver you downloaded to your desktop. Hopefully it will install with no issues this time.

7) Repeat steps 2 and 3.

8- Open your case and reinstall the card...following the ESD tips in Step 4.

9) Plug everything back in and reboot your computer.

10) Keep your fingers crossed.

Post your results.

Solve : Installing Operating System on a new Hard Drive! Help please!!?

Answer»

Hi, I have a computer that has been without a hard drive for a few years. I just BOUGHT a new hard drive, and am trying install Windows XP onto it.

The problem is that neither my cd-drive or my dvd-drive is reading the installation disc. I tried using a boot disk (floppy drive), but the universal drivers still aren't helping recognize the cd/dvd drives. I even went into config.sys and changed the drive from cd1, to cd2, cd3, and cd4 to try the other drivers from the boot disk.

Here is the website I got the bootdisk from. http://www.bootdisk.com/pop1343.htm

If anybody can help, that would be great. Thank you!1. DOS your machine read any other cd or dvd if yes then follow this
2. use seperate DATA cable for cd rom and hdd

that should solve the problem and you will be able to boot also chk the boot sequence in bios first boot should be cd / dvd and second HDD0 disable all other boot options disconnect printers and any other USB Device attached.yes circa is right. check the boot sequence in the bios. ok so lemme GET this straight. you can detect your drives in the bios but they don't recognize the cd? or is it that your drives aren't being recognized by your computer?

Hello Everybody, I was looking for help for my brother's computer. He DOWNLOADED something and made his computer CRASH. When he turned it back on, an error message regarding "0 active partitions" would pop up. It then says "Strike F1 to continue or F2 for setup utilities". I checked the boot sequence in the system utilities and it said that the on board IDE hard drives wasn't present. The computer model is a Dell Dimension 4700 and I saw something similar like this when I was searching the forums but that issue was caused by hardware problems due to user repairs. I haven't opened the computer yet but... any ideas hy u will have to open the comp the idea is it may be a boot virus so 1st step i would suggest is reset bios and memory and check in bios weather the hdd is detected if not then you mbr is gone you can try and recover it or fix it using DM Disk Manager downloadable at segate site, but if you mbr is gone then there is no garuntee you will recover the data. i worked for dell they do have something called pre loaded ghost check with dell CALLCENTER if you are still in warrenty if not then you will have to REINSTALL the os.again circa the expert got it right :-P.

Solve : computer monitor?

Answer»

I WANT to buy a new monitor. When I go to the display settings, the highest resolution is 1280 x 1024. Does that mean that is the highest monitor resolution that I can buy (i.e. a 19" standard screen)? I'd really like to buy a 19 - 20" widescreen. Would I have to replace the video CARD to do it or is that even possible? I have a DELL 4550. Thanks! To my knowledge your resolution all depends on your video card. you don't have to buy a new video cardWhat video card do you CURRENTLY have?

Solve : no dial tone on modem?

Answer»

I have an HP laptop, and whenever I try to dial up it says there is no dial TONE. I tried unchecking the "WAIT for dial tone" box. I sent the computer back to HP for warranty service, and it came back with a note SAYING they could duplicate the problem and they replaced the system board, but I still can't get it to work. I am using a business phone line, in which I have to dial a 9 to get an outside line. I TYPED a 9 into the appropriate box along with a comma. Unfortunately, I don't have a plain old home phone line to try it on.have you tried simply adding the "9" before the number to dial the connection.

such as:

9xxx-xxxi haven't messed with business lines. but don't u have to press 9 wait a couple seconds and then dial the number? thats probably the problem. sometimes with software you can disable call waiting. I think it dials like * and whatever it is. replace that with 9. so it'll dial 9, wait then dial your number.Quote from: Silencer RPMs on July 03, 2007, 12:53:18 AM

but don't u have to press 9 wait a couple seconds and then dial the number?

I don't think you need to wait... I don't need to when I dial outside lines from work... I'm in the UK though, no idea if it's different elsewhere.

Solve : Add Ram?

Answer»

Could someone please advice
At the moment i have 512 mb ram and i want to increase this to 1GB .

1, Will i have to buy 1GB or can i add 512 to the ram i already have.

PC3200 DDR SDRAM this the one in my computer at the moment (Everest)
LOOKING on ebay i see you can buy these as a pair or just buy the 1GB which works out expensive.

2, How difficult is it to do myself or will i have to take it to computer shop to install.
SkyblueRAM is probably the easiest thing to put into your computer.
As soon as you open up your case, you will see where it goes... and there's only one way it can go into the SLOT.

You can buy another 512Mb stick. as long as its the same speed. (I.e. if you buy a PC3200 and a PC6400 stick and put them both in, they will both run at PC3200) So you can just buy another 512Mb PC3200 DDR stick and put it into your mobo.

Let us know how you get on 1. get a 512 stick to add to the one you have.

2. make sure it is the exact same type ie ...pc3200 with the same "latency timings"

3. the exact same brand would be nice but not critical

finally you'll be running in what they call dual channel mode.... read up on how to install the new 512 stick in your particular motherboard (which slot to put the new stick in )*

dual channel mode runs very well, it would be my preference over one stick at 1 gig.........

it is very EASY to add or change ram, ground yourself before sticking hands in the case and make sure that your power cord is unplugged from the rear of your case before changing the ram.

you will really like the bump in speed GOING to 1 gig !!!! Quote from: honvetops on July 03, 2007, 03:49:38 AM

Same here. For some reason, always have... even before I knew the actual differences

No doubt.I have 2 gigs on my new puter and 1 gig on my emachine deluxe << lmao

I usually always surf on my emachine and when I changed over from 512 to the 1 gig, that was when I really noticed how "FAST" that extra ram was.
I actually can't notice the difference between 1 gig or 2 gigs .......
At that point my guess would be that the cpu makes the difference*

Solve : best brand?

Answer»

what is the best, tried & tested cd rom burning rom in the market TODAY? any suggestion PLS? There are many good models. I like LG drives, my friend prefers Pioneer.
I find going to newegg and looking in their hardware section at their reviews is a great way of deciding. Look under optical drives > whoever buys a product there has the option to write their own review of the purchase.

I agree, Honvetops, that is a good way of choosing a product. There is no single "best" drive. They are all pretty good.

Hello Honvetops Hello Honvetops Hello Honvetops Hello Honvetops Hello Honvetops
Isn't that annoying?

I like to look for the prettiest hardware 1st.
then if the user SAYS their intelligence of the product is HIGH *
and they hate it, I usually buy that one ! I paid extra for an LG drive because it had a silver drawer front to match my little Shuttle case

<<<< hiding in a cave with head buried in sand ~

(now I know who hates my scrolling !!!) Now I think it's KIND of cool

Well, personally,I have had the best luck with Lite-On.
Cost and performance can't be beat.

Link--->Lite-OnI bought that Lite-On ez-dub dvd burner at wally world. The thing is pretty sweet and i threw it on top of my emachine.... The thing is built like a tank and does work rather well.
I have heard great things about plexor .........

Samsungs were cheap and relatively a good product..for me.......So, cas23, get 10 dvd burner users together, you'll get 10 "best drive" recommendations.

Like I said.

Solve : Installing a slave HDD?

Answer»

I recieved a Pc from my a FAMILY member which was still in good condition hardware-wise, but its software was corrupted tenfold.

To make the computer usable, I reformated it using the boot disks and finished off with my installation CD to get Xp running on it. The thing was, the computer had a slave connected to it yet in my computer, the device manager and the BIOS, the slave was listed as a floppy disk drive in drive A while my real floppy was pushed over to drive B.

To find out what was wrong, I opened my casing to find the following PCI connections

Master hdd-----------------(unused junction)-------------------pci bus card
Floppy drive-----------------(Slave hdd)--------------------------Motherboard slot

following some online instructions and a few of my tech savy mates on the web, I changed around my ribbin cables to:

Master hdd-------------------Slave hdd---------------------------Motherboard slot
Floppy------------------------(Unused junction)------------------pci bus card

note: cd and DVD cables left untouched

Now it seems my pc refuses to boot, so I reverted back to the original settings only to get the same result, a boot failure.

In the bios it says there is neither a PRIMARY master and slave, listing the slots as Uninstalled and my Hdds unlisted. If I disconnect my slave drive leaving only the master hdd which works, I boot up to a dos prompt.

Now it looks like my little adventure to get the slave working has come to a bad turn of events. Can someone tell me what's wrong?

BOARD> intel d845bg
processor> pent IV
ram> 512
hdds> Maxdor (master) western digital (slave)
(master/primary cdrom)-------(secondary/slave cdrom)-------(motherboard)

(master/primary harddrive)-------(secondary/slave harddrive)--------(motherboard)

(floppy drive)-------(possibly empty connector)-------(motherboard)

The floppy IDE cable is a little smaller than the other IDE cables

Solve : possiable upgrade?

Answer»

hi guys.
I was thinking of upgrading my pc, I have a wt70ec motherboard with a p4 chip 1300mhz. whats the next STEP up? will ALSO be be upgrading hd and ram. thanksYou haven't TOLD us much about your objective. What's your budget for this? Do you want a good gaming machine? If not, what's your primary use?

What all were you thinking of upgrading? Motherboard? Processor? Do you want to have a system with PCI Express video card? sorry, i'm just looking to a have a machine that runs quicker, not much of a gamer but the KIDS are starting to. budget of around €200.0. at the moment i have 512mb of ram and 80g (nearly full) hard disk.

cheersA bigger hard drive is clearly in the picture. One upgrade you did not mention is one I would consider here is the video part of the system. Does your computer currently use onboard video? If so, does it also have an AGP slot? If you now have an add-on video card installed, what is it? In fact, I think having that info from you before proceeding further with this discussion would be helpful.

Also, exactly what make and MODEL is your computer?

Note: I believe €200.0 is about equal to $272.00, based on http://www.xe.com/ucc/; I need to think in terms of $.

Solve : Hard Drive not working?

Answer» HEY all,

Hoping I can get some feedback on an issue that I am having with one of my computers. I am not sure if it a hardware problem or Operating system problem.

Here it goes... I recently just combined two computers so I will be using the faster computer for my daily use stuff. I combined two of my three hard drives (80g) each into this computerand that one is working beautifully. When I attempted to put the original computer back together with the original hard drive, something went wrong and I can't figure out what.

Here's the scenario. I hooked the cables back to where they originally were on the hard drive, only difference is that my second 80g is no longer there, it was the slave anyways. When I turn the computer on it goes through the black screen that shows my RAM and video card, etc it freezes at the very next screen. I am unable to get into any of the menus by PRESSING the F2 or F10 key. The scree just freezes up and when I turn the comupter off manually, it immediately turns off, there is no shutdown time period. Reading through other forums, I do hear the beep on initial start up but I can't get any farther.

Anyone have any ideas on this? Did I hook it back up properly or could this be a possible Operating System issue?

Thanks for your help...I DOUBT its an OS problem considering its freezing at BIOS. Im thinking...maybe something isnt plugged in right or somethings overheating due to fan malfunction. Though I did have a similar problem to this with two sata hard drives, for some reason when one of the drives were removed the other one failed to work, or when the CD Drive was undone the drive failed to work. Try plugging your other hard drive that you took out back into your computer and see if that works. So, you previously had two hard drives in the "original computer"? Is that right? Did you make any changes to it besides pulling a hard drive out of it?

Are you absolutely sure the hard drive now in the "original computer" is the one with Windows on it? Is it now configured as master or single drive, instead of slave?

Did you previously have two hard drives in the "original computer" connected to one data cable? Which connector on the cable is the single hard drive now connected to, the one at the end or the one in the mid-section of the cable?I originally bought the computer with one hard drive in it and upgraded it with the help of my computer geru friends to having two hard drives. It has been working well like this for two or three years now until I took out the second hard drive. Let me note that this original hard drive has always had the operating system on it and has always been the master and the other has been the slave, the second hard drive has been for storate only. To answer your question is it set for master, I did double check the master slave setting on the hard drive and it is set up for the master function. As for the cables, the data cable is connected to the end connector (not the middle part of the cable) to the hard drive and the power cable is connected at the end of the cable as well. The only thing that I can think of as being different is the CD rom and Hard Drive cable has been switched but I have tried them both in the different slots. Does that help any more??What make and model is that hard drive? Does the jumper settings diagram also show a setting for Single? If so, you might try that.Unfortunately, being at work, I am unable to check that information right now. The computer is a gateway so I would assume that the mother board is a gateway motherboard. As for the hard drive, I believe it is a Western Digital. I will check and REPLY later tonight. Thanks for the help so far.Couple questions for ya.

Are you completely unable to acess your Bios or are you only pressing the F2 or F10 keys after it freezes in hopes you can get farther in the boot sequence?

Try pressing the F2/F10 (whichever is to enter setup for your mobo) as soon as you boot up and keep pressing it, to the point of getting beeps for reaching keystroke limit. If you are still unable to get into your Bios, your problem is not the hard drive. Something is wrong with the Bios itself or the chipset on the mobo. If it was anything else you should get an error message from your mobo, not a freeze up. You should, theoretically, be able to plug in just a video card, monitor, keyboard and powersupply to a computer and be able to access the Bios.

Not much you can do for it if you can't even get into the Bios. Clean it out real good with air duster and cross your fingers, or as a risky last resort before replacing the mobo you could try a Bios flash.

The good news, even if all this fails, mobos aren't that expensive compared to the rest of the major components. between $40-$70 for mid-range mobos.

Good luck Thanks Dam1an.

You are correct that when I press F2/F10 constantly from when I start to boot, nothing happens. I will try to flash the bios as a last resort but I look on it as an excellent opportunity to UPDATE the Mobo, Processor and Ram. Thanks for your feedback and wish me luck. F2 and F10 are not the only keys used for accessing the BIOS. Here's a good reference: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htmQuote from: Dam1an on July 02, 2007, 02:09:13 PM
Not much you can do for it if you can't even get into the Bios. Clean it out real good with air duster and cross your fingers, or as a risky last resort before replacing the mobo you could try a Bios flash.

Well, Dam1an, were you going to tell him what to do if he did get into the BIOS? What was the point of just getting him into the BIOS?What does it do if the hard drive ribbon cable
and the power plug 4pin to the hard drive are
left unplugged when you boot?

Can you get to the BIOS then?

Remember Bios flashes with the same hardware
you been using are rarely needed.I have unplugged the ribbon strip and tried turning on the computer. Same thing happens, the screen freezes up after displaying the video card and RAM information. I am not even sure if it gets to the hard drive before it freezes.I really wish people would stop suggesting a BIOS flash for machine issues...it is rarely, and i mean rarely the solution and can render a perfectly good machine useless.

Think of this before posting.

Solve : Need Help Reconnecting HeatSink Fan?

Answer»

Computer:DELL Dimension 2400 Series

I couldn't find a connection for the Heatsink fan. I went to the dell website and still nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2400/en/sm_en/techov.htm#1105465

P.S J30 is for the main fan, not heatsink fan, and its not J10 EitherMost very old Pentiums have no CPU fan. You didn't say what yours was.Its a pentium 4. It came with a heatsink fan on it. I know it needs it too because I'll start up the comp and it'll shut down. when i restart it said it was a thermal event. meaning it heated up fast but SHUTDOWN to PROTECT the comp.Plug it onto the J30 main fan plug if it reaches. You won't be able to monitor the fan's RPM's, but oh well. I'm guessing that's not an issue.I can't connect it to J30j30 is the hsf power jack (unless it just happens to be that close to the cpu socket)

What does the plug on your heatsink fan look like? this or thisalex its the first link. second one. You're looking for a plug that looks like this http://www.build-your-own-computer-tips.com/images/P1010175.jpg.

There should be one PRETTY near to the CPU socket on the mobo. If not, maybe you have a connector that would take a connector that looks like the one on alex's second link. In that case, you would need a new fan with that type of plug or an adapter.well see thats the thing. i look for the connector and can't find it. The fan on the heatsink came with the computer. I just can't see where it connects to. I use the map on Dell's website but those other connections are already connected.Quote

I can't connect it to J30

According to the connector you said your fan has and the map on the Dell site you have there, it should work. Does it just not fit? There should be a tab on one side of the J30 plug and a slot on the fan connector where that tab slides in.it doesn't fit. its for the main fantttwell, i don't know if your computer would start up without complaining about not detecting the heatsink fan (mine has ), but try buying one of these bad boys:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812189119

what's cool is that you could connect it to a used power connector since it still has the male plug on the end for a hard drive/cd drive/whatever needs it.

Solve : Speaker Problem?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP and the Firefox browser. My question is

I've taken Broadband recently. As at 1st i had prob in web browsing I formatted XP & then my net connection is OK.But my speakers went dead.Device drivers can't detect any speaker.Motherboard CD's audio driver could not also be installed.
What may be the problem? What should I do?Ok 1st things 1st , i would roll back the driver and reinstall it again. 2nd go through all your sound options in control panel , also make sure that your sound system is enabled in BIOS , to get into your BIOS right click my computer and go to mange and then device manger and make sure that your soundcard is enabled as well as your speakers , and also be aware that your settings may have changed in windows media player so check that out as well. Please tell me in details what to do at 1st.I've tried audio installation many times but it failed.

1. right click my computer

2.click manage

3.computer managment will come up

4.click device manger

5.A list of all your devices will appearr SCROLL down to sound video and game controllers

6,expand them VIA pressing the little plus sigh

7.look for your sound device

8.right click your sound device and click properties

9. under device status it will tell you if your speakers are working properly

10. next to the general tab you will notice another proprties tab click it

11. audio deivces , midi devices and instruments , and mixer devices are there . expand them all via pressing the little plus again , your audio devive should be under all of them. highlight the 1st one example ( FOR ME IT WOULD BE ( RELTEK AC97) then below all that HIT properties make sure the (USE AUDIO FEATURES ON THIS DEVICE box is checked , do the same all all of the options in properties.

12. It may ask you to restart , do so if asked.

Plan 2 : If all else fails

Rolling back your driver , now when you roll back your driver it will go back to a preious drover that worked fine , so roll back your driver after you have done all this , im gunna need to know the soundcard you have and your speaker model and make so i can get you the correct drivers.

I will countine after you have done all of what ive asked

I followed all the things you mentioned but in the default driver no device is there. At that column no option is selected. While I tried to roll back it refered this driver has not been backed up.After expanding the sound, game controllers the following options were shown:
1.Audio codecs
2.Legacy audio drivers
3.Legacy video capture devices
4.Media control devices
5.Video codecs
My speaker is Creative 585240,motherboard is Intel 915-GAG.Please tell me any other way.
Any ways,Thank you for helping me in this way.If you re-installed XP then your drivers are no longer there...re-install the motherboard drivers including the onboard sound device drivers and post back on what happens...
I've done that too.All but audio driver installation failed. DLoad and run Everest HOME which will tell you exactly what hardware is in this beast...

Solve : Speakers Help?

Answer»

I'm having trouble with my computer speakers. It will only play music out of one of the speakers, but not the other one at all. I have checked that there is not a problem with the balance. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks!
LawHow long has this been happening? Did you make any chanages to your system before this happened? Have you tried reinstalling your sound card drivers?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Well, I had to reformat the entire computer and finally got around to installing the sound drivers. I tried the sounds TODAY but that's all I got: one speaker works and the other doesn't.

It didn't happen before, but I don't remember any SETTINGS or anything from the previous installation, so I don't know what to do.

If it helps, I'm using Realtek AC97 Audio.

LawConfigure both Windows sound and driver sound settings.

To configure driver configurations:

1. Double click on Sound icon in System bar

To configure Windows sound configuration

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Sounds and audio devices
5. Volume tab

I tried it and I believe it doesn't work. Would it happen to be my sound card that has the problem?

LawProbably not... If all you have done since everything worked fine was reformat, then it's probably a software issue, becuase the hadrware was not touched... How does the second speaker get sound? Does the master speaker plug into the secondary?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Well, the speakers are ALREADY connected by default, the wires aren't removable or anything. However, when I do one of those sound tests, the other speaker (the one that is supposedly not the 'center') does play a noise, but not when I play music or anything.

Solve : partitioned physical HDD...?

Answer»

Ok, so my 250 Gig HDD just now has been partitioned into C: (approx 30Gig) and D: (the rest)... I have very few programs installed on my C: partition and all my games/mp3's etc are on my D: partition...

My question is, if I format the C: partition and reinstall XP Pro... Can I COPY a shortcut to my game exe's to, say, my desktop (or create my own addition to the start menu) and the game will still run? Will the game run this way?if you format the "C" Drive all data for the games will be LOST and they will all have to be reinstalled again.

why not try a REPAIR installation instead. All the data for my games are on the D: partition... formatting C: won't delete that. I don't install any of this type of stuff on my C: partition. Was just WONDERING if it would be possible to still run them after re-installing XP.in simple terms
when any software is installed the instructions/drivers/graphic codes/sound codes in fact the way the PROGRAM works in that particular operating system is added to it, in the Registry of WINDOWS XP/VISTA/98 etc are the connecting links.

if you format the drive you will destroy all the installed operating system and all added instructions registry etc, which would enable the software on drive "D" to work,

therefore to make them work again
they would have to be reinstalled again,
after you reinstall the operating system and motherboard and all other component drivers etc.

Solve : Safe mode?

HI. I am posting this thread for my FREIND. He was playing this game called
"MapleStory" When he closed that game. His screen resolution and color were reset(The color were reset to low 8bits and the screen resolution was set to 800x600).It looked like it was in SAFE mode. I tried to help him change the resolution for the screen and the color but it won't change.

When i went to go check the graphic card it say default monitor.

Solve : SATA connections ???

Answer»

I am trying to upgrade. Due to very limited funds I wish to use my :-
Hard drives (160 gb & 80Gb)
PCI Sound card,
dvd writer
floppy.
I am replacing the BOX (ATX) with a LARGER version. Ram (DDR2) Motherboard intel pentium 4 925x EM64T 775 PCIe ATX and have just bought a 775 2.8 Ghz processor. My problem is - I have just realised that this board has Sata connections - will I still be able to use my listed items? Please say yes, it has taken me forever to collect and PAY for these items from ebayI might be still asleep but I cannot see any make / model of your "new" motherboard on your post? I would assume it has ide connections on the board along with your sata connections- double check , read the specs on your new board and make SURE it says it has IDE connections.....( those are what you need to plug in your old hd's and floopy/optical drive)most 925x mobos still have 1 ide connector so he'll be able to use 2 of his IDE devices...

Let's have the make/model number please...

for the others you can get these things for about $30 (IDE to SATA converters)

Sorry, it is a Gigabyte Intel Pentium 4 925x Em64T DDR2 PCI-e ATX. That is exactly what the listing said on eBay. Can't seem to glean more info! It does have one ide slot but I have 2 Hard drives plus DVD rw
Kind regards
Kevin Sorry again, just realised I gave that info without realising - the only other info I can get is the number P89260A9vQO0P8Quote from: screwball on May 21, 2007, 04:55:49 AM

Well, you'll need an adapter for one of the IDE drives. The point is, for not much more you could buy a SATA drive anyway. You can put two (2) IDE drives on one IDE connector, one master one SLAVE.

Solve : sound problem!!?

Answer»

my sound ISNT working on my internet. it works on itunes and other non-internet related programs but when i try to LISTEN to music on any internet site it doesnt work. i thought at first that it was on mute but when i went to the control panel then to the sound, speech and audio device thing i couldnt adjust the volume at all and the mute box is unchecked. it all gray so i can't click on anything in the area and at the top it says no audio device.
If anyone can knows what i can do that would help a lot.
thanks. <3What happened before this started?
What sound CARD do you have?
What BROWSER do you use?
What protection do you have?
What OS are you using?it just started happening out of nowhere. i have microsoft on a dell computer and for internet i use internet explorer and netscape but the sound doesnt work on either. i have symantec antivirus. and im not sure about the sound card.Dell makes a lot of computers. I'll bet yours has a model number. Is this an add on sound card or onboard? Does the speaker plug into the motherboard or one of the expansion slots? Microsoft makes severl operating systems. Is this XP? Home or Pro?

Plus all of the previously asked questions. And you MIGHT as well give CCleaner (without Yahoo! toolbar) a whirl and see if it helps anything.

Solve : I need help with computer monitor?

Answer»

I just went and bought a new monitor for $100 because my old one burned up. Im wondering how. It was a 19in MITSUBISHI CRT made in 1998. For the past month it had been making strange "clicking" noises like spikes or something. It would flash the screen and get dark too sometimes. I hit the degauss button frequently to fix this but most of the time it still did the same thing. Then earlier today i was on my COMPUTER and it started doing that again and when i hit degaus i heard multiple sharp clicking noises and my screen flashed then went black. I smelled something like burnt rubber so i was afraid i had fried it. I PULLED out the power CORD. The room smelled BAD so i opened the window and took it outside. Unfortaneltyy it had burned up and i want ot know why it was doing this and why it melted when i hit degaus? any ideas? Now when you say new. Do you mean new, or new to you. Was it dirty inside you think?

Solve : Physical Memory?

Answer»

As a newbie i am not even sure i know how to ask this question correctly but i will try . My pc has a 256 physical memory & has APPARENTLY maxed out & is transfering memory from the hard drive (C) ?.. Is there a mininum % of " FREE space " i NEED to maintain in c for the system to operate ok ? I am CURRENTLY using 35% of c drives capacity .

cdoMaintain at least 15% free space, or Windows will not be happy.
Your physical memory is RAM memory, unrelated to your HDD space.
Does that answer your question?Windows likes to have 10-15% free space for the ever growing swap file.

With only 256 RAM, that COMPUTER will always seems slow with XP. Turning off ALL of the eye candy will help somewhat.

Solve : computer restarts with blank media?

Answer»

Hey all. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Whenever I work on a project or make a compilation CD or DVD, my computer would restart when I put in the blank media. If I am WORKING on a DVD project and inster the blank DVD the computer would restart and then usually the media would work properly. If, during the same restart, I would insert a blank CD the same thing would happen. Restart and then the media would be fine. This is a vicious cycle due to the fact I don't usually turn off my PC. This is also a fairly recent problem. I have been using the same blank media for quite a while. I am not sure what has started causing the problem. So ANY input would be awesome.

WIN XP SP2
AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core processor 3800+ 2.0 Ghz
2.87 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE
RealTek HD Audio
DVDRRW GSA-H20LSounds like a power supply issue to me, or a defective cdrom drive. Any other problems?

ALAN <>< No other problems to speak of. OTHERWISE the computer runs pretty flawlessly.

Solve : I/O error replace disk on IBM 760xl laptop drive after installing win98 from DT?

Answer»

I was able to INSTALL win98 on my IBM 760XL laptop drive w/2.5 cable and it works FINE on the desktop , but when i install the drive in my 760XL laptop i GET this i/o error replace disk and no prompt. i did download and install the APM files from leveno. does any one have any ideas.Win98 does not natively support usb, so I should think it's impossible. Unless anyone can come up with a working link to someone's how-to. XP is possible though.

And before proceeding further you need to find out if that laptop supports booting from USB...as it is Win98 it's probably an older one so i doubt it.
If the MACHINE won't boot to USB this is an EXERCISE in futility.

If however it does then i would get a 2.5" laptop to IDE cable and hook it up internally to the desktop and do it that way.Win98 requires being on the first partition of the first drive, which would be C.

Solve : Windows protection error casued by display adapter??

Answer»

I WOULD revisit that web page and do some more hunting...according to the info posted that is the driver for that card using WinME.

Check the listings under "legacy drivers"Okay, I will. Thank Patio. FRANKLY, I THINK it's time that I upgrade to Windows XP. ME is not all that stable and I have had quite a few problems with it over the years. Thanks for all your help. Most APPRECIATED!You're more than Welcome...thanx for the gratitude.

I'd also consider Win2K for that machine. Basically XP without the eye-candy although XP does have some features not included in Win2K. But i don't FIND it lacking for my needs and it is stable as heck which is hard to say about a MS OS.

With the money you will save just buy more RAM ! !

Hi Patio,

FYI, I had to wipe my hard drive in order to fix the problem. All is well now. I'm still using Windows Me for the present but will consider your suggestion to change to Win2K. Thanks again for all your help. I appreciate it very much. Take care!Glad to hear you are fixed up...nothing wrong with a good old fashioned wipe and clean install once in awhile...actually Windows seems to prefer it that way !

Solve : plays .mp3 cd but not music cd?

Answer»

Here is my setup:XP, Windows Media Player, Sony CD-RW 215E5, RealTek AC'97 sound on motherboard
I have tried numerous different music cds. It won't play play any music cd. When I click on E:(the drive letter of my cd drive), it says something like "cannot ACCESS". Yet I put a cd with .mp3 music files on it in the same drive, they play. By the way, a substituted known-good 215E5 acts the same way. Can the RealTek AC'97 cause this? Ideas? Things to try? What HAPPENED before this started?
Do they play in any media player?Yes, all music cds used to play in this system and now play in another system. Have you ever heard of a bad RealTek AC'97 causing this? I guess I need to disable AC'97 in BIOS and plug in a known good sound card. Also, a different IDE cable. I don't know what else to try.

Look in media players options for the FILE TYPES that it automatically takes control of. If you have installed or recently used another player software, it may have taken control. You own 2 identical CD drives ? ?

Interesting. I would try 2 things....re-install the Realtek drivers and DLoad and install another media player to see if that is the issue...

VLC is good AND free.I should have THOUGHT of this. I learned something new. You can right click on the .cda music file, click "open with". XP will give you a choice of all the installed music player programs. Then you don't have to mess with which one is currently "default". I know some music players switch "default" to themselves without asking!

Try reinstalling the GAME.
