My 'roommate' hooked my little nano up to a SPEAKER system for a computer, SINCE then it will not come on in my docking station, so I hooked it up to my laptop and had to restore it, does it interfere with operating if you are not using PROPER ipod accessories, such as speakers?No, it wouldn't be messing up your ipod's software or anything like that... it's probably just a really crappy connector on the bottom of your friend's speaker system. Make sure your ipod is in your dock nice and snug, and all should be FINE. If the iPod refuses to come up, you can always do a reboot of it (just hold the MENU button and the center button). This just restarts the iPod, retaining all of your music.

Starting to do my head in is this...
First it didint work on my sisters laptop, but did on mine. Nd now it jsut refuses to work on mine.
When plugged in the iPod say's Connected and thats all good, however in iTunes it just isnt there, its not recognized or ANYTHING!!!
However it IS recognized in My Computer. This is the problem it had on my sisters laptop.
The LAPTOPS are both XP machines, and I have uninstalled and then reinstalled iTunes on both machines but to no avail.
Ive had it less then 24 hours.....
Any ideas guys?!...

Have you downloaded iTunes to both computers?
You MAY have to manually open it, it may be set to not start when your device is plugged in.
If it sipmly wont recognise your ipod when iTunes is open you may have to try a 3rd parties syncronizing program. MediaMonkey is one, it will SYNC your library to most music players/devices inc. iPods

KiZThe Leopard version of MacOS is the newest Mac OS 10 version. Tiger is the version before it. (Quite FRANKLY, I think naming your operating system after animals is a bit silly.. especially when they are all supposedly the same "version" of the operating system)

I am trying to restore my ipod, but get an ERROR message that says that I am not connected to the internet. I obviously am, and itunes EVEN downloads podcasts NORMALLY. I recently had to reformat my hard drive; don't know if that is pertinent or not. I am using a hard wired CABLE modem. Any help appreciated. Do you have any type of firewall program running on the computer. Maybe it's possible it's blocking it from getting onto the Internet.I assume since you're posting in the Apple forum that you're using a Mac, but you haven't provided any information about what operating system you're on.

When I plug in my iPod nano 2 GB, second generation, to my windows-OS it does not regester. I have tried multiple USB slots and computers. My iPod shows the charging SYMBOL. I feel like a fool for waiting a MONTH after the warranty expired to start investigating it -.-.

P.S. I'm not sure about the importance of this but one time I formated the internal memory drive of my iPod because I used it to store files at one point and just wanted to clear it out. It continued to WORK after that event, however.

EDIT: When I said event, I meant that I could continue using iTunes with it.

I want to Video chat with a friend who has Ichat and a Mac BOOK pro compared to my Windows vista, Hp computer with AIM. I keep GETTING a black scree when I try to video chat with them and then soon after the whole connection is working the connection fails. I have extracted audio files from an ipod onto my computer and notice that they have an unusual four character (CAPITALS) filename.

I did the same from my partners ipod which had the same content on and the filenames followed a normal WINDOWS naming convention.

In some cases the same audio track has the same file size and running length but with the different naming conventions as I have outlined above and other cases has the same file size running time but a completly different output!!!

Trying to understand this and have no idea where I might start to read up on it. Any suggestions?

In my personal experience, that's how MP3's are stored on the iPod, so if you manually extract them by dragging and dropping, they will look like that.

My iTunes converts any music files to .AAC. I have never seen any MP3 file on it.

Time machine is important, for obvious reasons. The Mac/PC side of the hard drive NEEDS to be connected to multiple computers, so I'm trying to do it without having to install programs on any of these computers, since most of them are for work.

I have been trying to do it in disk utility, but I keep getting this error.

Using Leopard 10.5.4 when I DOWNLOAD a PDF from most websites it goes into Quicktime. Sorry folks had to leave didn't know this was realtime.All right, no WORRIES. Unfortunately I know squat about Mac so I would sit tight and wait for someone to come along. Download ONE of the pdf's to your desktop. HIGHLIGHT the pdf and then click on "file, get info" (or apple & I).

Toward the bottom you should see an area titled "OPEN with." There you can set the default application. Change it to "preview" (the built in mac app that will open pdfs) and then click on "change all" so that all pdf's open in preview.

Let me know if you have issues/questions.

One day I was on Safari and suddenly, out of nowhere with no notice, my COMPUTER starts lagging up, continued with the little rainbow swirley thing (I hate that thing ) So, i restart my computer using the power button at the top right corner of my keyboard. My computer shuts down successfully, I let it rest just in case if it over heated then I went to turn it back on but when i pressed the power button my computer started buzzing and the screen was a DEEP dark grey and after a minute, instead of the apple symbol showing up (like it's supposed to) a question mark in a folder image appeared and started blinking. Does anyone know how or why this happened? All help would be appreciated .
P.S.: My computer is a two-year-old MacBook Apple computer.First of all, doing a hard shut down like that is not a good idea.... you may have just killed the hard drive by doing that.

The symptoms definitely lean toward a hardware issue (dead hard drive).

The slowness can be related to memory or your hard drive, but based on what you said (CAME back up with a question mark on a folder) means that the system can't find your operating system.

If you have applecare my first recommendation is to bring it in to the apple store, they'll replace the hard drive for you. If you don't, I'd take a look at other hard drive possibilities.

One thing you can try (to get your data off of your mac, if you haven't already backed it up) is to turn it on and while it's booting hold the "T" key.

If your mac then shows a firewire symbol you should be able to hook it up to another computer and copy your needed data off of it. However, this won't work if you hard drive is really completely fried.Thanks for your prompt suggestion, Socrates, your username says it all .

Bring it to apple. They will replace your hard drive for you. The sad part is that you'll LOSE whatever data you didn't back up. The good news it that you'll have a brand new hard drive.

Hi, I'm a goober

I have just recently purchased a combo drive mac MINI (with all the standard specs, no extras), and have been making a few minor changes to set it up as a media centre.

One thing that I wanted to do was change the default directory for all my movies from the pre-designated movies directory on my mac internal HDD, to a folder also called Movies on my western digital my book external 500g drive. The drive is formatted as NTFS but i have installed a patch so it is read/write in leopard.

Being new to mac i did not know that i could simply make an ALIAS for my external movies folder an put it in the mac movies folder so that i could access those files through front row (using dvd assist), which is all i'm trying to do.

So, i did a bit of digging on the web and found SOMEONE who had a posted a bit of terminal code that removed the mac movies directory and replaced it with whatever directory you wanted to use instead.
Gave it a try even though its a bit over my head, and needless to say i have stuffed it up.

so now, the movies directory on my mac hdd remains completely usable and unchanged (phew), but my external hdd movies folder is stuffed. there is a folder there called movies, but there is nothing in it. My original movies folder had about 200g of stuff in it, which according to the system information for the drive must still be on the drive, COZ the space is still taken up. It seems to me that i have just 'broken' the directory. I guess that a new, empty directory called movies has been placed on the drive that has nothing in it, but since it has the same name as my original folder full of stuff, the latter has become inaccessible even though the files remain on the drive.

Sorry for the long post and stupidity. does anyone here know enough about terminal to help me fix my mess? i'm happy to provide more info (e.g the command i put into terminal) if anyone thinks it may help. I'll take any adivce i can get.

i'm trying to do a clean install of mac os x 10.2
it won't boot the cd when i press c as i turn it on.

when i press option key it gives me the LOCKED thing and i don't know the password.

what can i do?Your problem is that whoever you got the old ibook from put a master password on it.

People put those master passwords on so the password cannot be CHANGED or reset, and the operating system cannot be REINSTALLED over it without the password.

You need to get the old password before you can do a clean install of 10.2well duh i KNEW that what i want to know is how to get past the password...... i'm not supid i know a password BLOCK when i see one even if it is in a os i'm not fimiliar with."well duh..."

not all password blocks are the same. If this hadn't been a master password setup you could have just reset the password using a tool built into the OS's disc.

You`ll find this elementary, but it puzzles me. I`m struggling to put a podcast on my iPod nano.

1. Because of the difficulty. I`ve been trying to access the Apple discussion forum. I established an ID and gave em a password. Both seem to be accepted. Then in addition they want me to create an account, but I fill in all the details, agree to the terms, press the continue-button, and back comes the Create an Account PAGE. Round in circles. There seems no other route to getting help from Apple.

2. I`ve got a podcast in the My Podcasts sub-file of My Documents in my COMPUTER. I`d like to get it on to my ipod. I believe the intermediate stage is to get it into the iTunes folder in my computer. I`ve done that before, but I can`t do it now. With the iTunes window on my screen, I hit File, Add to Library, browse for My Podcasts, then drag the file across to the left-hand column where there are the headings Library and Playlists. Both Library and Playlists have a sub-heading called Podcasts, so I drag to both. It`s TOTALLY ineffective. If I can`t d that stage, I won`t be able to "sync" the file on to the ipod.

3. I suffered some software damage from some faulty advice on the Lavasoft forum. It`s supposed to have been put right but I had to reload a driver for Motorola Phone Tolls, so maybe the damage has hit iTunes. Besides the difficulty described above, when I go for an iTunes update I get a message saying the server couldn`t be CONNECTED, and I should check that my settings are correct. Of course, I having a clue about doing that.

You're going about it the wrong way. You don't manually drop the podcasts into the folder on the ipod. Instead, you just simply download the podcast off of itunes, and then you can sync it to the iPod nano. Once you've downloaded the podcast in iTunes, click on the iPod nano (in itunes) and then you should have a "podcasts" tab. If you go to that it should allow you to choose what you want to sync to it.Are you sure you weren't just searching the itunes music store and not browsing the podcast directory? If you click on podcast on the left hand side of iTunes, then click on "pdocast directory" in the bottom right corner of itunes, you should be able to search for whatever podcast you like.

Otherwise, like you said, adding the podcast via a website works too. Once it's in your iTunes you should be able to click on "subscribe" to keep up to date with the most current ones.

smf, I don't know too much about macs, but I suspect that if the ram is already maxed out, there isn't too much more you can do. We do have a MEMBER that checks back in with this site about once every week or two that has considerably more knowledge than I do. Maybe he'll have some suggestions.

mac's will never diehttp://www.macworld.com/2001/06/bc/howtooldmac/I'm guessing that 7.5 means your OS and therefore your machine SOUNDS as if it is pre powermac(G3). Macs of that ilk will be difficult to upgrade not least because of the lack of available parts. Their HDD tend to be SCSI. The memory is the same as PC but you need to know what is already in use before you buy more.
The thing with macs is they were more or less redesigned from the ground up with each new model which make interchanging parts very difficult as opposed to PC.
Personally I'd consider upgrading to a newer machine. I've got 3 G3's in my shed WAITING for attention but sourcing parts is the TRICKY bit....see what I mean? Treat yourself!

I was wondering if there was any other way to CHARGE the intelligent batteries (M1906) in the PowerBook 500 series laptops
without having them in the computer and without
a fancy external charger. My batteries are so dead that the computer

I have Adobe Photoshop 6, which I've put on my IBOOK G4 from the installation disk I used on my old IMAC Desctop. CURIOUSLY, the tools have been reduced, for instance, I no longer have a 'magnetic lasso'. It's the same installation disc that provided these tools on the older machine. E-mail has to do with INTERNET service providers. As long as they have internet access, you should be able to email them. If your document is in Microsoft Word or another program that windows will run, it should work. If not, it might be gibberish on the other end. If it is a microsoft product like Word, PP, or excel...it should be okay...

Apple checks your OS before you can download. It is only meant for Windows 2000, and Windows XP. I think you are out of luck. I am running both XP, and ME, and I WANT iTunes on the ME computer, but I can't...

Whenever I ry to use my yahoo mail ACCOUNT on my girlfriend's apple I am able to receive mail, but then when I go to reply (or compose an email) when I click on the 'send' button - nothing happens (as if the button is completely inactive). All other BUTTONS, eg calender, mail boxes, etc work - I am just unable to send any mail. This is very frustrating - it doesn't HAPPEN on other computers. Has anyone else had this problem? Where do the files go when the trash is emptied?
Do they go somewhere in my computer or possibly gum it up and SLOW it down?The files do not go anywhere, they stay on the computer. When a data file is created it uses a finite space on the hard drive and it causes some magnetic material on the hard drive to change state in the classic one's and zero's we have come to recognize as representation of computer data.

In order for the computer and its APPLICATIONS to recognize where data BEGINS and ends, a particular series of one's and zero's are recorded before the data is recorded. This =header= code tells the computer and the associated application that the following codes are in fact data and can be read on screen or printed. There is an =ending= code to tell the computer where a data file ends.

When that data file is =trashed= the header code or =flag= is over written leaving the =data= or body of the file intact. Even though the data is intact it is not accessable by the computer for the application to be read or print.

If the file is long it will be =chopped= up into several segments and each segment will have a header code , not only telling the computer that data follows the header, but where the previous segment is located on the hard drive and where the following segment is located to. When too many files are broken up into segments the computer is required to hunt for them on the hard drive before loading them into memory for you to use. This hunting time does slow the computer down. When files are segmented the hard drive is said to be fragmented. A severely fragmented hard drive is a slow hard drive.

When you use a defragmenting utility the segmented files are brought back together and MADE into =contiguous= files again. The =extra= space once taken up by the fragmented segments are returned to the computer as =free space= meaning that there may be old data in the free space but it can be recorded over.

Hi. I recently downloaded Terragen, when I tried to run the program an error WINDOW comes up and tells me it "could not find TGLib".

What is TGLib? My only GUESS is it's an extension that didn't get installed for some REASON. Is there ANYWHERE I can get this file?

Just moved to a G4 Quicksilver and have some, lots, several, a few Narrow scsi hdd and external scsi cases with data and other stuff. I have a RATCO systems FR1SX FW to scsi converter and an adapter to go from narrow scsi to HD50 pin scsi which connects to the FW port on the G4.

Most of the HDD INCLUDING some external CD Rom and MO disks and an external CD-RW will function well via this connection. Have PROBLEM with 5 HDD however, two Quantum ( Atlas III and Fireball) , two Seagate Cheetah, and one BIG 51/4 inch whose brand I can't see without pulling it out of the case. These HDD are not recognized with this set up. All are Mac formatted and worked in various of my beige cpu from Sys 7 to OS 9.

Now I am thinking that the firmware needs updating but at least for the Quantums I have not FOUND any indication that firmware is avilable. What might my next move be?

On the suspect HDD a jumper needed to be set to enable termination, now DRIVES show up on desktop.

having problems conecting speakers to my apple mac because the computer speakers have 3 cables to be connected and the mac only has one port.is their anything that i could buy which connects 3 cables to 1 port. You did not identify the model of the computer, nor the type, style of speakers, but there are some generic THINGS to consider.

The beige series of computer used 1/8 INCH MINI stero jacks, so any speaker set would need a MATCHING plug. Most computer speakers are =stero= and have a device with jacks to connect the two speakers as well as a =pigtail= to connect to the computer, the pigtail having a 1/8 inch mini stero plug. Sometimes the speaker connecting device has an extra jack so a sub-woffer can be included in the setup.

Most setups of this sort require some power and one of the speakers has a power jack so a power supply transformer (wall wart, a.c.adapter) can be connected.

Since 2000 with the introduction of the first iMac series the speaker jack at the computer is a sub miniature stero jack. All Macintosh since then has the sub miniature jack, but otherwise the same interconnections are made.

regarding the =three= wires of your speaker, do they have any color coding on the plug ends?. OH! by the way where did you get the speakers, if new do they have an instruction manual? If used, do you know who owned them before and can you reach that person and confirm that the speakers once connected to a computer succssfully?

And probably the best advice to help you find the answer, take the speakers to Radio Shack and tell them you need help connecting to your computer. Of COURSE tell them what size the speaker jack is on the computer. They have adapters if it needs to go down or up in size/

At this point you do not need to tell them it is for a Macintosh because they will fixate on that and ignore your connection issue.

DanHave you plugged into th PC via the black jack-plug..and used quicktime PLAYER?CHECK APPLES....website.for plug-ins.or just load the mini-disk.....via the cdrom disk drive....was suppose to ditch the floppy disk........still waiting..

WHat would OPPOSING flashing arrows to the left of the Apple menu indicate when I open CERTAIN documents in a shared FOLDER?
