You have learnt in the text how Huygens’ principle leads to the laws of reflection and refraction. Use the same principle to deduce directly that a point object placed in front of a plane mirror produces a virtual image whose distance from the mirror is equal to the object distance from the mirror

Answer»

SOLUTION :With the point object at the CENTRE, draw a CIRCLE touching the MIRROR. This is a plane section of the spherical wavefront from the object that has just reached the mirror. Next draw the locations of this same wavefront after a TIME t in the presence of the mirror, and in the absence of the mirror. You will get two arcs symmetrically located on either side of the mirror. Using simple geometry, the centre of the reflected wavefront (the image of the object) is seen to be at the same distance from the mirror as the object.
