Write the structural formula of ethanol. What happens when it is heatedwith excess of conc. H2SO4 at 443 K? Write the chemical equation for thereaction stating the role of conc. H2SO4 in this reaction.

Answer»

Ethanol -> CH₃CH₂OH

When Ethanolis heated with excess of conc. H₂SO₄, at 443 K , Ethene is formed . conc. H₂SO₄CH₃CH₂OH ----------------------> CH₂ = CH₂ + H₂O

H₂SO₄ acts as a dehydrating agent , that removes water molecule from ethanol
