Write the chemical equations for reaction, if any, of (i) Na2O and (ii) Al2O3 with HCl and NaOH both. Correlate this with the position of Na and Al in the periodic table, and infer whether the oxides are basic, acidic or amphoteric. |

Answer» i. Na2O + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H2O Na2O + NaOH → No reaction As Na2O reacts with an acid to form salt and water it is a basic oxide. This is because Na is a reactive metal lying on the extreme left of the periodic table. ii. Al2O3 + 6HCl → 2AlCl3 + 3H2O Al2O3 + 2NaOH → 2NaAlO2 + H2O As Al2O3 reacts with an acid as well as base to form a salt and water. It is an amphoteric oxide. Al is a moderately reactive element lying in the centre of main group elements in the periodic table. |
