1.

Write chemical reactions involved in Van Arkel method for refining titanium.

Answer»

Van Arkel method for refining titanium: The volatile iodide of titanium (formed after treatment of impure titanium with iodine) is electrically heated using tungsten filament above 1700 K. Pure titanium gets deposited on the filament and as the deposition goes on, the current is steadily raised to maintain the temperature.

Ti(s) (Impure) + 2I2(g) \(\overset{523\,K}\longrightarrow\) TiI4(g) (Volatile iodide of titanium)

TiI4(g) (Volatile iodide of titanium) \(\overset{1700\,K}\longrightarrow\) + Ti(s) + 2I2(g) (Pure)
