ATE The Williamson Ether SYNTHESIS is an OLD reaction, dating back to 1851, but hasn’t been surpassed. There just isn’t a simpler WAY out there to make an ether. It’s a type of reaction we’ve already seen many times before – an SN2 reaction between a deprotonated alcohol [“alkoxide”] and an alkyl halide that forms an ether.
