Lines of force represent the STRENGTH of the electric field at any given point. ... If the lines cross each other at a given location, then there must be two distinctly different values of electric field with their own individual direction at that given location. This could never be the case and hence they could not intersect each other.

Now in the FIGURE, at any point on the electric lines of force we could not have two directions; since that would MEAN that the same vector is pointing towards two different directions (or the same electric field is CREATING its impact in two directions) which is practically not possible.

Thus the electric lines of force will never cross each other.
