Why the energy flow in biosphere is unidirectional |
|
Answer» Energy flow in biosphere is unidirectinal because when primary consumer consume energy from the first trophic level producers then the consumed energy is consumed by the next trophic level and so on. Consumed energy from the second trophic cannot go back to the first trophic level. This is why energy flow is unidirectional The producer plants convert solar energy into chemical energy in the form of organic compounds. The primary consumers (herbivores) derive their nutrition from the producers. During the transfer of energy in a food chain, there is energy lost at each trophic level. According to the energy transfer law, only 10% of energy is transferred from one trophic level to the other. As a result at the decomposer level, no energy is left for recycling what remains is the only organic matter of dead organisms. Hence, the energy flow in the biosphere is unidirectional. |
