Answer» Magnesium is a metal and it reacta with air and moisture to form basic layer of magnesium carbonate and magnesium ozide which do not catch fire .So it should be cleaned before burning in air To clean oxidised layer on magnesium ribbon There is a layer of oxide on magnesium ribbon so it is necessary to rub it so that oxide layer can remove Magnesium reacts with oxygen and forms a layer of magnesium oxide when kept in air.Hence magnesium ribbon is cleaned with sand paper before burning in air for further oxidation.
