Why should a magnesium ribbon be clened before burning in air |
|
Answer» Magnesium ribbon is a very reactive metal. When stored it reacts with oxygen to form a layer of magnesium oxide on its surface. This layer of magnesium oxide being a stable compound prevents further reaction of magnesium with oxygen. The magnesium is cleaned before burning in air to remove this layer so that the metal can be exposed to air properly. So that to remove the layer of magnesium oxide formed by the reaction of magnesium with air to get the desired results. This is because magnesium is reactive when it is exposed to air it reacts with oxygen present in the air and forms a coating of magnesiun oxide which prevent further reaction |
